Ms. Lauryn Hill Is Hitting the Road With Fugees — Here’s How to Score Last-Minute Tickets

By John Lonsdale

John Lonsdale

Ms. Lauryn Hill released one of the best albums of all time nearly 25 years ago this year with The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill , and now the Grammy winner has taken her 1998 solo project’s songs on the road — along with a Fugees reunion — for a multi-city trek that kicked off in September. Following the tour announcement, Hill announced another run of new dates that would extend through December, with stops in Vancouver, Detroit, Atlanta, and Boston.

“ The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill is and was a love song to my parents, my family, my people, my musical and cultural forebears, my teachers, my loves, my Creator,” Hill shared in a statement. “I wrote love songs and protest songs — (still love songs) about the subjects and interests that inspired and moved me. I was confident that what inspired me would resonate with an audience that had been led to believe that songs of that kind could only live in the past.”

The answer: Get Ms. Lauryn Hill and Fugees tickets on Ticketmaster , StubHub , Vivid Seats , TicketNetwork , and SeatGeek .

Ms. Lauryn Hill & Fugees 2023 Tour Schedule

Taking the number 10 spot on our list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time , Rolling Stone wrote of Hill’s solo classic: “ Miseducation ’s musical legacy is just as deep; at a time when pop was becoming increasingly slick and digitized in the go-go Nineties, here was an album that showed the commercial appeal of a rawer sound; ‘I wanna hear that thickness of sound,’ Hill said. ‘You can’t get that from a computer, because a computer’s too perfect. But that human element, that’s what makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up. I love that.'”

Lauryn Hill set list

Wondering what Hill will play live?

While we can’t guarantee anything — although it’s likely she’ll perform at least a few tracks from “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill” — here’s an educated guess based on what she played at a recent show:

01.) “Everything Is Everything” 02.) “Superstar” 03.) “When It Hurts So Bad” 04.) “Final Hour” 05.) “Lost Ones” 06.) “Every Ghetto, Every City” 07.) “Ex-Factor” 08.) “To Zion” 09.) “Nothing Even Matters” 10.) “Forgive Them Father” 11.) “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You” (Frankie Valli cover) 12.) “I Used to Love Him” 13.) “Tell Him” 14.) “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill” 15.) “Doo Wop (That Thing)”

The above set list comes courtesy of Set List FM .

At all U.S. concerts, Wyclef Jean and Pras Michel will co-headline with Hill.

According to Variety , it’s likely they won’t be touring internationally “presumably because of member Pras Michel’s legal challenges stemming from his recent conviction on international conspiracy charges.”

In September 2021, the South Orange, NJ natives announced a 25th anniversary tour celebrating their album “The Score” but canceled a few months later due to COVID concerns.

Hip-Hop stars on tour in 2023

Hill isn’t the only iconic act back on the road this year.

Here are just five of our favorite rappers from yesteryear performing live these next few months.

•  50 Cent with Busta Rhymes

• Snoop Dogg with Wiz Khalifa

• Wu-Tang Clan with Nas

Plus, on Sept. 15, Mariah Carey, Mary J. Blige and Wu-Tang Clan will headline at NYC’s Madison Square Garden.

New Jersey local Lauryn Hill (born 26 May 1975), is a solo artist, singer-songwriter, rapper, producer and former member of Hip-Hop group The Fugees.

Before her musical talents were unleashed onto the world, Lauryn Hill found moderate success as a young actress, starting alongside Whoopi Goldberg in the feature film “Sister Act 2: Back In The Habit”. However her career changed whilst attending Columbia High School, where she formed a hip-hop group with fellow student, Pras Michel, and his cousin Wyclef Jean, called “Tranzlator Crew” in 1992.

After gaining record label attention through live gigs and demo’s, the group was picked up by Columbia Records. They eventually released their debut album “Blunted On Reality” in 1994 under the now famous moniker of “The Fugees” (in reference to Michel and Jean’s Haitian heritage” Whilst the album struggled commercially and critically due to its “gangsta rap” direction, Hill, under her “L.Boogie” persona caught the attention of critics and fans alike.

When the group was given a second change by label execs, they did not disappoint, and their second album “The Score” was a smash hit, reaching number one on charts around the world, and certified six times platinum, whilst receiving the adulation of music critics for its alternative hip hop sound and politically charged focus. At the center of the groups success was Hill, with her smooth and recognizable singing voice and sharp rap lyrics often standing out on hit tracks such as “Ready or Not” or the Grammy winning “Killing me Softly”.

Following on from the breakout success of the Fugees, all the members decided to take a solo path. Lauryn finally gave the fans what they wanted with the release of her debut solo album “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill” in 1998 an R&B project which featured tracks such as “Doo Wop (That Thing)” which touched on personal subjects such as her failed personal relationship with Wyclef Jean and the pressures of being a young single mother. The album made Hill a superstar, as it received universal acclaim, exceptionally high sales figures and an incredible five Grammy’s including “Best Album”, unprecedented for a Hip-Hop album in the 90’s.

Since her success and the international tour that followed, Hill has kept herself out of the public eye, citing the stress of being a celebrity too much to handle, and has instead focused on raising her six children. Despite her decision, many music fans around the world are hopeful for her much awaited comeback.

Live reviews

After a break in music due to motherhood and imprisonment, former Fugees songstress Lauryn Hill is back on the scene proving that she still has that thing. Ms. Hill's return to the stage has been like a box of chocolates -you never know what you're going to get- but one thing you're always guaranteed is that beautiful, rasping growl that made her the Soul Queen of the 90's.

Ms. Hill has an effortless way of sending you on the most intense roller coaster of emotions. She takes command of the stage and knows exactly which buttons to press to send the crowd's hearts into their throats. We begin our ride with the agonising beauty of "Killing Me Softly," we ascend into the unknown with a cover of The Doors' "Light My Fire," and then we're hurtled into space with Miseducation's "I Used To Love Him" and taken through a loop of Reggae righteousness with "Please Don't Rock My Boat."

Hill finishes the set off with Fugees favourites "Fu-Gee-La," the ultimate crowd-pleaser "Ready or Not" and brings us back to the start with another rendition of "Killing Me Softly." Ms. Hill's live show is one helluva ride that you can't (and don't want to) get off of.

Seeing Ms.Hill live at the Indig02 is like a spicy and complex chicken soup for the soul. She definitely still has that thing on stage and while there's no doubt as to how she earned her place in history, there is doubt as to whether she will be sending us on roller coasters in the future. The only way to listen to Hill is live, no show is ever the same and when she's stripped down to the bare minimum with just a guitar - well, you best hold onto your socks.

Really disappointing concert.

Our ticket said the concert would start at 20h00. Ms Lauryn Hill was on the stage at 22h30.

The warm up acts included two different bands, two stand up comedians and a DJ. The sound cut out for the DJ at one point.

Those standing had their arms up in a cross to protest the lengthy warm up... It was tooooo much. We just wanted to hear Lauryn Hill.

When she finally came on most of the audience booed. People were leaving before the end of her set- no doubt having a long commute home.

During her last song the house lights went up. Then the microphones were cut. She was left talking until her mic was also cut. She hadn't had enough time to finish her set.

Totally bizarre and disappointing. The tickets were expensive - and we got half of a Lauryn Hill concert.

At one point she was talking about "authenticity and respect". Again the audience booed.

I think she is an amazingly talented artist who is unfortunately out of touch with the fact that her fans lead normal lives; including commutes on public transport, babysitting costs, and work the next day. Boring "authentic" facts about everyday life that Ms Lauryn Hill seems to have forgotten.

Her first song had the lyrics "You might have won some but you just lost one..."

I think she might have lost more than one.

Happy childhood memories listening to her work but I would hesitate about going to see her at anything other than a music festival - unless I had no work the next day!!

Lauryn Hill's show (her show only) was fantastic, musically and sound wise it was 9.5 out of 10. The reason why it's not a 10 is because all of the songs were remixed and I would have loved to listen to at least one of the classic versions from beginning till end, not just the chorus.

HOWEVER, I must complain about how long we had to wait to see her perform. 4 hours. 4 FREAKING HOURS. REALLY? when I bought the tickets, I didn't expect to see a festival of 4 different opening acts for 4 hours. It was nowhere in the description, and except for Chakra Kahn, the genre of music of the other bands was completely different. I understand maybe the roots of RnB and Hip Hop could have come all the way from African beats, and I have nothing against African music, but I was not expecting it, and I thought it was really unrelated and out of place. I really didn't like the fact they kept teasing the audience by saying Lauryn was coming out after their song, this happened repeatedly. People were pissed! some were booing, girls were taking their heels off from standing for so long. And it was a Thursday, so some people had to work the next day. The concert ended at 1:30am!

I don't think I'll attend another of her concerts again as much as a fan of The Fugees and Lauryn Hill that I am...I mean I really liked her show separate from all of the factors working against her, I love her music and what she does, but I can only tolerate so much.

“Before I work with Lauryn Hill again, you will have a better chance of seeing Osama Bin Laden and Bush in Starbucks having a latte, discussing foreign policy.” Granted, Pras Michel said that before Bin Laden died, but you get his point; only the most committed optimist would have any real expectation of the Fugees working together again. Instead, fans would be better advised to turn their attentions to Hill’s solo career, under the new moniker of ‘Ms.’ Lauryn Hill (allegedly, her insistence on being addressed as such was one of the contributing factors to the group’s demise.) Whether or not we’ll ever get a proper follow-up to the genre-defining 'The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill' remains up in the air; for now, file it alongside D’Angelo’s 'James River' as an R&B record that might never see the light of day. Instead, Hill is focusing on touring, having ironed out some of the difficulties that marred her initial return to the stage in 2007. She’s no longer rushing through her sets at breakneck pace, but continues to reconfigure the classics; check out a haunting new arrangement of ‘Ex-Factor’ on YouTube for proof. With a recent jail term for tax evasion out of the way, she’s lined up her first UK tour in a long, long time for September; recent evidence suggests she’s somewhere close to top form.

On Christmas morning when Lauryn Hill was announced to perform on New Years day I was thrilled. I called all of my friends and we secured VIP table seats and planned an amazing evening.

Our evening was great, but the warning signs about Ms. Hill were there. 1. The negative reviews she's received. 2. The fact that the concert time was pushed back an hour days before she was to perform.

Well, I should have listened to the signs. She was still late! It was almost 11 pm by time she took the stage and when she finally did she didn't great the audience, no Happy New Year, sorry I'm late- nothing! Instead she was directing the band the entire night and came off as completely unprofessional. I felt like we were at a sound check rather than a concert. I was really disappointed.

Of course, she opened with some new songs that no one has heard of, but when she finally performed her classics, she hyped everyone up only to let the mood right back down by performing these buzz kill songs, one was in French, but we couldn't understand what she was saying anyways.

In summary, I won't see her again. She still has all the talent in the world, but her lack of professionalism really killed it for me.

Dallas Show: Was supposed to start at 6:30PM. Opening act started a 7:00, not sure who he was but it was truly boring. DJ can on for about 20 minutes and then a African Band. They sounded pretty good, just was familiar with their music and that was not who came to see. So from ~8:15 we waited and waited and waited while the DJ played music until 10:05PM before Lauren Hill came on..... man this concert was a dud. She only stayed on stage one hour, she ended at 11:05. During they show she is constantly giving instructions to the sound man to make adjustments. Her voice has changed. Her tone is different and didn't hear the vibrato that made her voice especially unique. I would not recommend this concert if you don't already have tickets. I am hearing that this has been the pattern at many stops. Terrible to make us wait for such a short show, many complaints leaving the venue.

An epic night full of good music, good fun & an excellent no nonsense crowd!

The female DJ was phenomenal and she rocked us all, start to finish. It was one big party.

The openers were amazing in their on right and good to hear NY in the house.

Ms Lauryn Hill was strong, powerful & on point all night and took control! She looked simply beautiful! The songs choices and words she had for us all were perfect!

The band and background singers kept it real! Never missing a beat!

Shout out to her guitarist & horn player..both Berklee alumni! We see u!

The visuals & stories projected were soul stirring behind Ms Hill! Thank you!

Thank you for the entire experience!

A night to be remembered forever!

Red Rocks in Colorado is a one of a kind venue.

Every part of the show was sign languaged, which was amazing to watch and so thoughtful!

Best show of my year!

I saw Ms. Lauryn Hill in the Forum koncert hall in Copenhagen, Denmark on her 20-year celebration of her solo album. The sound at the concert were awful, but apart from that, I was happy to hear that she still has a wonderful voice and a unique feel for music and rhythm. Her voice was a little darker than on the album, but still quite amazing; And she compensated by including three amazing support singers.

She lacked a bit of energy on the stage, but still managed to connect with the audience.

One thing I really did not appreciate was how late she showed up and that her second warm up act, DJ Reborn, played party music, that didn't match the atmosphere of Ms. Lauryn Hills music and did so with lacking DJ'ing skills (questionable track transitions etc.). In contrast, the first warm up act, IAMDBB, was great! Great singer and a real charmer!

An upbeat funk band and an on-point nostalgia-inspired Brooklyn DJ were ideal supports before the much-anticipated Lauryn Hill. Upon arrival she created a brilliant atmosphere in The o2 Arena and engaged a sell out crowd with a performance celebrating one of the best albums of all time. Despite changing melodies for several key songs too early in their start, she still retained the powerful messages famously portrayed. Differences to the album were expected from an artist who has essentially played one album for her 20 year solo career, but they never improved on the original recorded songs. She engaged the crowd well with thankful words and her emotion was felt. Spoiler! A beautiful Fugees rendition welcomingly closed a set full of soul, hip hop, positive messages, warmth and nostalgia.

The show started almost 3 hours later than expected and Ms. Lauryn Hill was not in her best shape in the first part of the show. The first tracks she played from The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill were disconstructed and her and the band seemed a bit uncomfortable with the versions of the tracks they were delivering. Ms. Lauryn Hill seemed to be stucked in her head and found difficult to connect with the audience which started to leave the venue right after the first break. However, after Doo woop and her, apparently, deserved break, she returned more inspired and connecting with the audience who returned the energy singing together Zion and some Fugges’ tracks. I will clap forever for her version of “Ready or Not”.

Lauryn Hill

Five-time Grammy winner Lauryn Hill has announced a 25th anniversary tour for her iconic debut solo album, 1998’s “Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.” Hill’s former group the Fugees, who abruptly canceled a planned 25th anniversary tour around their multiplatinum album “The Score“ album last year, will open only the U.S. dates, presumably because of member Pras Michel’s legal challenges stemming from his recent conviction on international conspiracy charges.

The 17-date tour will hit arenas around the world, including Brooklyn’s Barclays, Chicago’s United Center, the Kia Forum in Los Angeles as well as in Australia, New Zealand, and more (full dates below). The Fugees will reunite for their first tour in years to co-headline the tour on all U.S. and Canadian dates. The trio announced a world tour in 2021 and played a concert in New York that September , but all other dates were canceled.

With its pioneering fusion of R&B, hip-hop and pop, “Miseducation” was one of the most influential albums of the 1990s. Entered into the Library of Congress in 2015, it was the first hip-hop album to receive an album of the year Grammy Award, and made Hill the first woman to be nominated for 10 Grammy awards in one year and the first woman to win five Grammys in one night. However, she has only released one album since then — an “MTV Unplugged” concert recorded in 2001 — although she has toured frequently.

“I loved music, I loved people, I truly felt grateful to God for my life, and genuinely blessed to have a platform where I could share wisdom and perspective through music,” she continues. “I felt a charge to challenge the idea that certain kinds of expression and/or certain kinds of people didn’t belong in certain places. I loved showing what could work or happen provided there was imagination, creativity and LOVE leading the way.”

Citi is the official card of the tour. Citi cardmembers will have access to presale tickets beginning Wednesday at 10 a.m. local time until Thursday at 10 p.m. local time through the Citi Entertainment program. For complete presale details visit  www.citientertainment.com . Public onsale for the tour begins this Friday at 10 a.m. local time. Lauryn Hill’s 25th-anniversary tour in NYC: Everything we know so far

“The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill” is turning 25.

Ready to feel very, very old? “The  Miseducation of Lauryn Hill ,” the titular performer's seminal solo debut album, turns 25 years old this month. The 1998 neo-soul record produced classic tracks like "Doo Wop (That Thing)", "Ex-Factor" and "Everything Is Everything" and earned Hill five Grammy awards, making the singer-rapper the first woman to receive that many awards in one night.

Given the popularity and pedigree of the record, it's no surprise that  Lauryn Hill will celebrate the 25th anniversary of the album that made her a superstar with a US tour this fall, including several stops in the New York area.

“The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill’ is and was a love song to my parents, my family, my people, my musical and cultural forebears, my teachers, my loves, my Creator,” Hill said in a press release. “I wrote love songs and protest songs—(still love songs) about the subjects and interests that inspired and moved me. I was confident that what inspired me would resonate with an audience that had been led to believe that songs of that kind could only live in the past.”

She continued, “I loved music, I loved people, I truly felt grateful to God for my life, and genuinely blessed to have a platform where I could share wisdom and perspective through music. I felt a charge to challenge the idea that certain kinds of expression and/or certain kinds of people didn’t belong in certain places. I loved showing what could work or happen provided there was imagination, creativity, and LOVE leading the way.”

Here’s everything we know so far about Lauryn Hill’s 25th-anniversary tour in NYC:

When is ‘The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill’ 25th-anniversary tour coming to NYC?

After the anniversary tour plays Newark (Lauryn Hill is a Jersey girl, after all) on Tuesday, October 17 at Prudential Center , it will make its way to NYC with a Brooklyn show on Thursday, October 19 at Barclays Center .

Hill will also perform in NYC a month earlier at the Global Citizen Festival in Central Park on Saturday, September 23, alongside Red Hot Chili Peppers, Megan Thee Stallion and more.

How can I get tickets to the NYC shows?

Tickets for all tour dates will go on sale on Friday, August 25 at 10am local time, with presales beginning on Wednesday, August 23 at 10am. They'll be available on all of the usual platforms: Ticketmaster, SeatGeek, VividSeats, etc.

How much do tickets cost?

As of press time, tickets for the upper levels at Barclays Center are going for about $75 a pop, whereas a spot closest to the stage in the General Admission Pit will run you back $750.

Any news on the setlist?

No word yet on the official setlist but given that the tour is commemorating  The  Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, we'd put money down that Hill will perform most, if not all, of the tracks listed on the 16-song album, such as "Lost Ones," "Every Ghetto, Every City" and "Superstar."

Who will be supporting the tour?

The big question: will Hill be joined onstage by Wyclef Jean and Pras Michel, members of  her former group, the Fugees? The answer is yes. The group played its first show together in 15 years back in September 2021 at NYC's Pier 17 and reunited yet again at the Roots Picnic in Philadelphia this June. The Fugees will support Hill at U.S. dates for the anniversary tour, while Jamaican singer Koffee will take up opening the Australian gigs.

Ms. Lauryn Hill & The Fugees

lauryn hill tour schedule

Miseducation of Lauryn Hill 25th Anniversary Tour

San Francisco will host the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation from Monday, Nov. 13 through Monday, Nov. 20, resulting in a variety of road closures, detours, and changes to transit service. >> Learn More Coming off a triumphant Global Citizen Festival headline set where the 5x Grammy winner surprised fans by bringing out Fugees for part of the show, Ms. Hill has now announced The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill 25th Anniversary Tour will be coming to Chase Center on Nov. 17, 2023. Ms. Hill notes the importance of the tour, extending the dates, as well as the lasting impact made by both the album and Fugees: “I’ve almost felt compelled to carry a torch or to keep a light shining regarding the continual performance of the Miseducation album. I believe there’s been a reason for that—and the Fugees coming back together for performances too feels like unfinished business we’re destined to handle. The connections are real and uncanny, and the magic and synergy between us has not been deterred by time. I believe the messages that we and the art we made embody something moving, meaningful and important for us and for the world. We gave voice and image to possibilities that emblazoned so many musical directions after us. As we were inspired, we also inspired countless artists who have shown up to express themselves in this musical space. Both the Miseducation and the Fugees’ material challenged and expanded convention, by paying homage to the past, while richly embracing the present, and emblazoning the trail for the future. We represent not just ourselves but our influences and our peers who took art, culture and inspiration very seriously—- who reshaped the landscape for ourselves and for those who would follow after us. I’m grateful to be able to celebrate this classic material and re-present it to an audience in this time.” Wyclef continues: “I can’t wait to hit that stage with my band mates. No one will wanna miss this. It’s what I call lighting in a bottle.” Pras adds: "Reuniting with Ms. Lauryn Hill and Wyclef Jean for the Miseducation Tour is a full circle moment. Lauryn's profound lyricism and mastery of hip hop, reggae, and soul created an undeniable masterpiece with The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. Combined with our groundbreaking album The Score, this body of work shaped the soundtrack of a generation. It represented a renaissance of culture, politics, and spirituality in hip hop. I'm honored to reunite on stage and pay tribute to Lauryn's immense talent and timeless music. I look forward to celebrating with fans worldwide who have supported us for over 25 years. This tour is about the power of music to leave an indelible impact." The impact that The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill had on music, fashion, and American and world culture is immeasurable and continues to influence the world's biggest artists. Entered into the Library of Congress in 2015, Ms. Hill and her Diamond-certified album achieved numerous firsts including being the first ever Hip Hop album to receive an Album Of The Year Grammy Award, being the first woman to be nominated for 10 Grammy awards in one year and being the first woman to win 5 Grammys in one night.

A Brief History Of Black Country Music: 11 Important Tracks From DeFord Bailey, Kane Brown & More

A Brief History Of Black Country Music: 11 Important Tracks From DeFord Bailey, Kane Brown & More

While the world anticipates the arrival of Beyoncé's 'Act II: COWBOY CARTER' on March 29, revisit these 11 songs by influential Black country musicians throughout history, from a Charley Pride classic to a Mickey Guyton statement piece.

In February, Beyoncé added to her record-breaking legacy by becoming the first Black woman to top Billboard 's Hot Country Songs chart with her single "TEXAS HOLD 'EM."

"I feel honored," she shared on Instagram in a countdown post to her RENAISSANCE sequel, Act II: COWBOY CARTER , out March 29. "My hope is that years from now, the mention of an artist's race, as it relates to releasing genres of music, will be irrelevant."

Since she first dabbled in country music with "Daddy Lessons" in 2016, the icon has received consistent backlash about whether she belongs in the genre. That same year, audiences campaigned for a boycott against the Country Music Awards for her performance of the track alongside The Chicks , later resulting in its erasure from promotional advertisements. And eight years later, the conversation returns as radio listeners question if her music should air on country stations.

Ironically, if you look back through music history, you will quickly discover that Beyoncé isn't the first (and certainly not the last) Black musician doing country music.

In fact, the genre plants its sonic roots in negro spirituals and field songs, written on slave plantations. African American Vernacular English continues to influence contemporary chart-topper's lyricism and vocal twang. The banjo, which descends from the West African akonting lute, remains one of the quintessential instruments of the genre. Whether Beyoncé or the many artists who came before her, nothing sits at the heart of country music more than Black art.

To understand the full scope of Black creatives' impact in country , GRAMMY.com examines some of the influential tracks and moments of those who have made their mark on the genre and the music industry — from DeFord Bailey's Grand Ole Opry debut in 1927, to Darius Rucker's post-Hootie & The Blowfish country foray in 2008, to Breland's 2021 fusion of country and hip-hop.

DeFord Bailey — "Pan American Blues" (1927)

Before there was Mickey Guyton , Darius Rucker, or even Charley Pride , there was DeFord Bailey, the "harmonica wizard" from Tennessee.

After performing locally, another musician introduced Bailey to Nashville powerhouse radio station WSM's manager, George D. Hay, who later invited him to join the Grand Ole Opry — making Bailey the first Black member. He quickly rose to become one of the program's highest-paid players at the time, largely thanks to his iconic instrumental tune, "Pan American Blues," which imitated the sounds he heard from the railroad during his childhood.

As of press time, the only other Black inductees in the Grand Ole Opry are Rucker and Pride.

Lead Belly — "In The Pines" (1944)

"My girl, my girl, don't lie to me/ Tell me, where did you sleep last night?/ In the pines, in the pines/ Whether the sun don't ever shine/ I would shiver the whole night through," Huddie "Lead Belly" Ledbetter questions in the Appalachian folk song, "In the Pines."

Though Lead Belly isn't the original writer of the song, his chilling vibrato on the recording inspired singers for years to come, including Kurt Cobain , who later covered the track in Nirvana 's 1993 MTV Unplugged performance under the title "Where Did You Sleep Last Night?" and named the '40s country blues legend his "favorite performer."

Linda Martell — "Color Him Father" (1969)

In "Color Him Father," Linda Martell narrates the heartfelt tale of a stepdad who embraces his new paternal role to a widowed mother and her seven children. It's also the song that propelled her to stardom, landing her a historic performance as the first Black woman on the Grand Ole Opry stage and later opening the door for debut album, Color Me Country .

After the project was released, Martell stepped away from the limelight, but her impact lived on. She was the inspiration for contemporary luminaries like Mickey Guyton: "The fact that she was there was groundbreaking ... She gave me the courage to be here," Guyton told Rolling Stone in 2020.

Charley Pride — "Kiss an Angel Good Mornin'" (1971)

Through his nearly seven decades-spanning career, Charley Pride became a certified hitmaker and one of the most renowned pioneers of his time. By 1987, he amassed more than 50 Top 10 hits on Billboard 's Hot Country Songs chart, with 30 peaking at No. 1 — including his most notable single, "Kiss an Angel Good Mornin'."

After Pride passed away from COVID-19 complications in 2020, the response to his death highlighted the magnitude of his legacy, receiving condolences from Dolly Parton , Billy Ray Cyrus , and perhaps the most personal from Darius Rucker.

"I couldn't have done what I do, I don't think, if there hadn't been Charley before me," Rucker said in an essay for Billboard . Pride served not only as an icon but also as a mentor to Rucker, and his kindness ultimately gave Rucker the courage to do the same for the next generation.

Cleve Francis — "You Do My Heart Good" (1992)

As a cardiologist and songwriter, Dr. Cleve Francis certainly knew a "good heart."

In his 1992 track, "You Do My Heart Good," Francis sings about a budding love that shows him how to see life in a beautiful light. The song eventually became the second single from his Liberty Records debut LP, Tourist in Paradise .

Francis later founded the now-defunct Black Country Music Association in 1995 to foster an inclusive environment in the Nashville music scene and provide resources to aspiring singers. Under his advisory, the BCMA, with the help of Warner Bros., produced From Where I Stand , a record book of Black artists' contributions to the genre.

Darius Rucker — "Don't Think I Don't Think About It" (2008)

Before 2008, many knew Darius Rucker better as Hootie, thanks to his remarkable '90s run as frontman of jangle pop band Hootie & the Blowfish. But with his second album as a solo act, 2008's Learn to Live , the world met Darius Rucker, the country artist.

Fittingly, he chose a heartbreaking ballad for his first country single — "Don't Think I Don't Think About It," a heartbreaking ballad about a man who wonders what could have been in a previous relationship. The choice resonated with country listeners:  "Don't Think I Don't Think About It" debuted at No. 1 on Billboard's Hot Country Songs chart, making Rucker the first Black country artist to have a chart-topper since Pride in 1983.

Kane Brown — "Heaven" (2017)

Since his major label debut, Brown has possessed a unique boy-next-door charm, less "Western" than his peers. "Not laced up in a tight belt and buckle hat," but proof that "you can be who you want to be, and you can still listen to country music," his manager, Martha Earls, told Variety in 2018.

Take "Heaven," a romantic ballad with the Southern drawl and instrumentation of a classic country tune. But when you add Brown's R&B influence and natural swagger, the track invites audiences both in and outside of country.

Though Brown now has 12 No. 1 songs on the Country Airplay chart, "Heaven" is undoubtedly the country star's biggest song to date thanks to its crossover qualities and romantic resonance. And just last year, "Heaven" became only the seventh country artist in history to receive a diamond certification from the RIAA; Brown is the second Black country artist to achieve the feat, as Rucker's anthemic cover of "Wagon Wheel" reached diamond status in 2022.

Mickey Guyton — "Black Like Me" (2020)

In a 2020 interview with Rolling Stone , Mickey Guyton recalled that she wrote "Black Like Me" at a writer's retreat in 2019, thinking, "There is no way that anybody is going to accept this." But at the height of the Black Lives Matter protests after the murder of George Floyd in 2020, there was no doubt that it was what the industry, especially the country genre, needed to hear.

"It's a hard life on easy street/ Just white painted picket fences far as you can see/ If you think we live in the land of the free/ You should try to be Black like me," she croons on the chorus.

The single made Guyton the first-ever Black woman nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at the 2021 GRAMMYs, and also helped her earn nominations for New Female Artist Of The Year and New Artist Of The Year at the Academy of Country Music Awards and the Country Music Association Awards, respectively, in 2021..

Guyton continues to use her voice for advocacy, from speaking out on racial issues to chronicling the Black experience on her 2021 album, Remember Her Name .

Breland — "Throw It Back" (2021)

Since making his debut with "My Truck" in 2019, Breland has been praised for his innovative fusion of country, gospel, hip-hop, and R&B. But beyond his sonic landscape, he's also inviting some unlikely choreography into the genre: twerking.

"If she got a shot of whiskey, she know how to throw it back/ She turn up for Elvis Presley, told the DJ, 'Throw it back,'" Breland cheers in the chorus of the trap-infused track.  "If you sexy and you know it, make it clap."

"Throw It Back" features Keith Urban, whoappreciates Breland for his confidence to go beyond the mold of country music's expectations. "He's one of the only artists I've ever met that does not care at all what something sounds like or what box it fits. If he likes it, if it catches his ear, he wants to be a part of it in some way," Urban explained to Taste of Country in 2021.

The War and Treaty — "Blank Page" (2022)

The War and Treaty are making the most of their "Blank Page."

The husband-and-wife pair — Michael Trotter Jr. and Tanya Trotter — began their musical journey together in 2016.  Seven years later, thanks to their first major label EP, 2022's Blank Page , they also started making history. The War and Treaty became the first Black duo to receive a nomination for Duo Of The Year at the 2023 Academy of Country Music Awards, where they also delivered a stirring performance of the EP's title track, a heartfelt song about a new slate in love.

Six months later, they made history again as the first Black pair nominated for Duo Of The Year at the 2023 Country Music Association Awards; they took the stage there as well, performing"That's How Love Is Made" from their 2023 album, Lover's Game .

They added to their growing legacy at the 2024 GRAMMYs as well,  receiving their first GRAMMY nominations. "Blank Page" earned the duo a nod for Best American Roots Song, and they also were up for the coveted Best New Artist.

Tanner Adell — "Buckle Bunny" (2023)

When Beyoncé dropped "TEXAS HOLD 'EM" and "16 CARRIAGES" in February, country newcomer Tanner Adell readily tossed her cowgirl hat into the ring to become Queen Bey's next collaborator. "I hope Bey decides to sprinkle me with a dash of her magic," she pitched in a tweet that has now garnered more than four million views.

Adell's music is reminiscent of Beyoncé's own empowered narratives, particularly the 2023 single "Buckle Bunny," which even declares that she's "Lookin' like Beyoncé with a lasso." Like Breland, Adell brings a hip-hop flair to country music, exemplified by the thumping beats and rap-inspired singing of "Buckle Bunny."

As artists like Adell, Breland, Kane Brown, and more continue to push the boundaries of the country genre, they'll also remind listeners of its rich lineage in Black culture — past, present, and future.

Inside The 2024 Special Merit Awards Ceremony Honoring N.W.A, Gladys Knight, Donna Summer & More

A deeply emotional pre-GRAMMY ceremony honored an extraordinary group of musical creators, pioneers, educators and icons including the Clark Sisters, Tammy Wynette, K'naan and others legendary innovators.

This year, the Special Merit Awards ceremony was not for the faint of heart.

The 2024 GRAMMY Week event, held Saturday at a capacity Wilshire Ebell Theatre in Los Angeles, presented Lifetime Achievement Awards, Trustees Awards, the Technical GRAMMY,  and the Music Educator Award to a dazzling gallery of musical innovators whose work has generated deep emotional connections across decades. In a world currently ensnared in a pattern of global conflict, the presentation of the award for Best Song for Social Change for the first time at the Special Merit Award ceremony this year added an extra layer of poignancy.

The presentation was touching from the very beginning, with a video montage of previous winners set to the historic recording of Aretha Franklin singing the Puccini aria "Nessuna Dorma." Glimpses of many legendary faces and performances on the screen underscored the Academy’s empathy for impactful music history: from Marvin Gaye to Janis Joplin ; Billie Holiday to The Carter Family ; The Beatles and Tina Turner to Dolly Parton and The Supremes .

The 2024 Music Educator Award was then given to Annie Ray , a music teacher and orchestra leader from Annandale, Virginia selected for her relentless positivity and inclusive energy. "Orchestra is much more than a class — it’s a family," said one of her students during a brief video chronicling her work. Ray, whose classrooms include students from 66 different countries — put together, they speak 59 languages — was visibly touched as she received the award. "I am thankful to share with the world what my students have taught me," she said.

The year’s Technical GRAMMY belonged to Tom Scott and the late Tom Kobayashi , who met at Lucasfilm’s Skywalker Sound in 1985 and together launched the Entertainment Digital Network (EDnet), which allows the sharing of high-quality video and audio. An estimated 250,000 musical collaborations have been facilitated by their innovations, including many GRAMMY performances.

Next up were the three Trustee Awards: British pop legend Peter Asher , member of Peter & Gordon, prolific A&R executive, producer, manager, and a self-professed "admirer and member of the Recording Academy for almost 60 years"; legendary entertainment attorney and former Recording Academy Chairman Joel Katz, known as "the dealmaker who thinks outside of the box"; and Jamaican American DJ Kool Herc , renowned as one of the founders of East Coast hip-hop in ‘70s. He received the award joined by his sister Cindy who promoted his initial series of parties in the Bronx, noted for his groundbreaking use of two turntables and the extension of funky breaks in songs.

It was time to honor the Lifetime Achievement recipients, and a sprightly Laurie Anderson stepped onstage and gave a witty assessment of her reputation as an uncompromising song alchemist. "They say my music is experimental, which sounds like doing something in the lab that might explode," she said. From her wonderfully robotic, left-field 1982 hit "O Superman" to her poetic concept album Homeland in 2010, Anderson has created her share of aesthetically explosive works of the art-pop and avant-garde variety.

"I love music so much, and I married a musician," she said acknowledging her husband, the late Lou Reed . "Wouldn’t it be great if there was a piano on every corner?"

The best-selling female gospel group in history, Detroit-based The Clark Sisters are known for their soaring vocal harmonies and powerhouse hits like "You Brought The Sunshine."

"We thank our Lord and Savior for allowing us to do what we do: singing," they said, adding words of gratitude for their mother — "the lady who paved the way" — the late choral director Dr. Mattie Moss Clark.

The importance of a rich spiritual life was also emphasized by Motown legend and Soul empress Gladys Knight . The singer known for classic hits such as "Midnight Train to Georgia" and a raucous rendition of "I Heard It Through The Grapevine" beamed onstage as she recalled her beginnings in music, before she became an international star with The Pips . "We had to go to church every Sunday, and it did make a difference," she said. "Everybody was singing around me when I grew up. And my mom would never allow me to do it easy. It had to come from the heart."

It was time to witness the strength of street knowledge. Delving into the very core of hip-hop identity, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony presented the Lifetime Achievement Award to N.W.A , the revolutionary Los Angeles collective that transformed the landscape of popular music with its 1988 debut Straight Outta Compton . The group was joined by the mother and son of late rapper Eazy-E, who passed away in 1995 at age 30. The surviving members of the group – excepting Dr. Dre , who was celebrating his daughter’s birthday and sent a text greeting – looked vindicated. "We always knew that a GRAMMY was not in the cards for us, but we still wanted to express ourselves," said Ice Cube . "When you do your thing, the world will come to you."

Donna Summer , the ethereal and visionary singer who took disco music into progressive territory during the ‘70s, passed away in 2012. The "I Feel Love" star received a posthumous Lifetime Achievement Award on Saturday — and her husband Bruce Sudano and their three daughters were there to collect it. "Her voice and music are omnipresent in the [cultural] zeitgeist," said Sudano. "Donna continues to inspire people worldwide. She always referred to herself as an ordinary girl."

Last but not least, GRAMMY winning country star Tammy Wynette , who died in 1998, was also honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award — accepted by her daughters, Georgette Jones and Jackie Daly.

"Mom would feel very humbled to be in such a talented group of people," Jones said. "She always thought that the GRAMMYs were the biggest accomplishment in music. And she never fully understood her own impact."

When rapper and singer K’naan was a child in Mogadishu, his mother managed to get the family out of Somalia on the last commercial flight before the civil war erupted. Together with songwriters Gerald Eaton and Steve McEwan , K’naan was honored with the Best Song for Social Change award for "Refugee," a track about the plight of political refugees around the world.

"In the Somali language, the word 'home' derives from the word 'mother,'" explained K’naan as he received the award to a standing ovation. "I dedicate this GRAMMY to my home — my mother."

The Recording Academy’s Special Merit Awards Ceremony celebrating the 2023 Special Merit Award recipients will return to the Wilshire Ebell Theatre in Los Angeles on Saturday, Feb. 3.

“The Academy is honored to pay tribute to this year’s Special Merit Award recipients — a remarkable group of creators and industry professionals whose impact resonates with generations worldwide,” said Harvey Mason jr ., CEO of the Recording Academy. “Their contributions to music span genres, backgrounds and crafts, reflecting the rich diversity that fuels our creative community. We look forward to honoring these music industry trailblazers next month as part of our week-long celebration leading up to Music’s Biggest Night.”

Lifetime Achievement Award Honorees

This Special Merit Award is presented by vote of the Recording Academy’s National Trustees to performers who, during their lifetimes, have made creative contributions of outstanding artistic significance to the field of recording (through 1972, recipients included non-performers).

Laurie Anderson is a writer, director, composer, visual artist, musician, and vocalist who has created groundbreaking works that span the worlds of art, theater, experimental music, and technology. As a performer and musician, she has collaborated with many people including Brian Eno, Jean-Michel Jarre, William S. Burroughs, Peter Gabriel, Robert Wilson, Christian McBride, and Philip Glass. In 2002, Anderson was appointed the first artist-in-residence of NASA which culminated in her 2004 touring solo performance, The End of the Moon . She has been nominated for six GRAMMY Awards throughout her recording career and received a GRAMMY for the release Landfall in collaboration with the Kronos Quartet at the 61st GRAMMYs.

The Clark Sisters , an American gospel vocal group initially consisting of five sisters: Jacky, Denise, Elbernita, Dorinda, and Karen – have been taking the world by storm since the early 1980s. Credited for helping to bring gospel music to the mainstream, the Clark Sisters are considered pioneers of contemporary gospel. Their biggest crossover hits include: “Is My Living in Vain?,” “Hallelujah,” “He Gave Me Nothing to Lose,” “Endow Me,” their hit song “Jesus Is A Love Song,” “Pure Gold,” “Miracle,” and their largest, mainstream crossover gold-certified, “You Brought The Sunshine.” The Clark Sisters (Jacky, Elbernita, Dorinda, and Karen) have won three GRAMMYs (two awarded to the group, and one to Karen as a songwriter for “Blessed and Highly Favored”), and with 16 albums to their credit and millions in sales, they are the highest-selling female gospel group in history.

Gladys Knight is a seven-time GRAMMY Award winner who has enjoyed No. 1 hits in pop, gospel, R&B, and adult contemporary, and has triumphed in film, television and live performance. Knight has recorded more than 38 albums over the years including four solo albums. She appeared on ABC’s 14th season of “Dancing With The Stars” in 2012, and in 2019, she competed on the inaugural season of “The Masked Singer.” Knight has sung the National Anthem at several major sporting events, including at Super Bowl LIII in Atlanta in 2019, and at the 2021 NBA All-Star Game. She was a National Endowment for the Arts 2021 National Medal of Arts Recipient and received a Kennedy Center Honor for Lifetime Artistic Achievements in 2022.

N.W.A was a rap group from the Compton district in Los Angeles who are credited by many with inventing gangsta rap. The group, consisting of Eazy-E^, Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, DJ Yella, and MC-Ren, developed a new sound, which brought in many of the loud, extreme sonic innovations of Public Enemy while adopting a self-consciously violent and dangerous lyrical stance. In 1988, N.W.A released their album, Straight Outta Compton , a brutally intense record that became an underground hit without any support from radio or MTV. This negative attention worked in their favor as it brought the album to multiplatinum status. Although the group was short-lived, gangsta rap established itself as the most popular form of hip-hop during the mid-1990s.

Donna Summer^ rocketed to international superstardom with her groundbreaking merger of R&B, soul, pop, funk, rock, disco, and avant-garde electronica, catapulting underground dance music out of the clubs of Europe and bringing it to the world. Summer holds the record with three consecutive double albums to hit No. 1 on the Billboard charts (the only solo artist to ever accomplish this), and first female artist to have four No. 1 singles in a 12-month period on Billboard ’s Hot 100 chart. A five-time GRAMMY winner and 18-time GRAMMY nominee, Summer was the first artist to win the GRAMMY for Best Rock Vocal Performance, Female (1979, “Hot Stuff”) as well as the first-ever recipient of the new GRAMMY Category for Best Dance Recording (1997, “Carry On”). Summer was the first female artist to win GRAMMY Awards in four different genres: dance, gospel, rock, and R&B.

Tammy Wynette^ first hit the musical scene in 1966 with “Apartment #9” after moving to Nashville and teaming up with record producer Billy Sherrill. Together, the duo wrote songs that reflected the yearnings and the things Wynette felt were important in her life. In 1968, Wynette released “Stand By Your Man,” which sold more than five million singles and became the largest-selling single ever recorded by a female artist. By 1970, she racked up five No. 1 country hits, was named the Country Music Association’s Female Vocalist of the Year three times, and won two GRAMMYs. Wynette was the first female country music singer to sell over one million albums and has sold more than 30 million records grossing more than $100 million, earning her the title “The First Lady of Country Music.”

Trustees Award Honorees

This Special Merit Award is presented by vote of the Recording Academy’s National Trustees to individuals who, during their careers in music, have made significant contributions, other than performance, to the field of recording (through 1983, recipients included performers).

Peter Asher ’s career began in 1964 as one-half of Peter & Gordon, whose “A World Without Love” topped the charts worldwide. Nine more Top 20 hits followed before Asher became head of A&R for the Beatles’ Apple Records in 1968, and discovered, produced and managed James Taylor; later adding Linda Ronstadt, Neil Diamond, 10,000 Maniacs, Cher, Diana Ross, Kenny Loggins, Bonnie Raitt, Robin Williams, Stevie Nicks, Lyle Lovett, Morrissey, Steve Martin & Edie Brickell, Ed Sheeran, and more to his roster. Asher won the GRAMMY for Producer Of The Year in both 1977 and 1989. He hosts a hit radio show “From Me To You” on Sirius XM and is much in demand not only in the studio but as a performer, speaker and author.

The legendary Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee DJ Kool Herc is consistently credited as the founder of hip-hop. His mastery at the turntables is known worldwide, as are his positive contributions to the evolution of hip-hop culture. Herc’s popularity rose by playing long sets of assorted rhythm breaks strung together. Unlike any of his DJ counterparts, Herc is not a rapid rapper who keeps your head spinning with a patter, but he is a musical innovator to the turntables. He first introduced using two turntables to make the beats last longer, creating the illusion of one long break for the B-Boys to show off their skills. Herc has received a great deal of recognition during his lifetime, including his induction into the 2023 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, and recognition from the New York Landmarks Conservancy as a 2023 Living Landmark.

Joel Katz has played a profound role in shaping the entertainment industry through his work in facilitating entertainment-related corporate acquisitions and mergers and consulting multi-national and multi-media entertainment companies. Katz was ranked Billboard magazine’s No. 1 entertainment attorney in its “Power 100” list of most powerful executives in the music business and has been called “the dealmaker who thinks outside the box.” At Kennesaw State University, Katz endowed and began a commercial music program – one of the largest music education programs in America with over 500 students. He has authored and co-authored many articles and commentary on topics concerning entertainment law. In honor of his work, the University of Tennessee College of Law dedicated its library in his name, the Joel A. Katz Law Library.

Technical GRAMMY Award Honorees

This Special Merit Award is presented by vote of the Producers & Engineers Wing Advisory Council and Chapter Committees and ratification by the Recording Academy's National Trustees to individuals and/or companies/organizations/institutions who have made contributions of outstanding technical significance to the recording field.

Tom Kobayashi^ and Tom Scott met at Lucasfilm’s Skywalker Sound in 1985, when the duo joined the company and completed the building of the Skywalker post-production facilities in both Northern and Southern California. Together, Kobayashi and Scott launched the Entertainment Digital Network, also known as “EDnet,” which employed fiber-optic networks to send high-quality video and audio great distances. Its then-revolutionary technology enabled the industry to link together talent, executives and production facilities at great cost savings. For 25 years, that company connected hundreds of recording studios worldwide in the days before the Internet could handle high-quality audio. EDnet became a part of Onstream Media, and over the decades, tens of thousands of long-distance collaboration sessions were facilitated for the music, advertising, TV, and cinema businesses.

Best Song For Social Change Award Honorees

This Special Merit Award honors songwriter(s) of message-driven music that speaks to the social issues of our time and has demonstrated and inspired positive global impact. The finalists and recipient(s) are selected annually by a Blue-Ribbon Committee composed of a community of peers dedicated to artistic expression, the craft of songwriting and the power of songs to effect social change. See past recipients here .

In June 2023, singer-songwriter K’naan released the inspiring single and accompanying video “Refugee,” co-written by GRAMMY Award-winning songwriter Steve McEwan and GRAMMY-nominated producer Gerald Eaton (also known by his stage name, Jarvis Church). “Refugee” stands out as a distinctive musical endeavor, skillfully interweaving personal and political narratives, and serving as a tribute to refugees around the world. With the single, K’naan drew inspiration from his personal experiences, aiming to redefine the traditional perception of the term “refugee” into a symbol of resilience and strength. The song was written with the hopes of encouraging individuals to embrace the word “refugee” proudly and to give those made homeless by conflict a song that felt like home.

Guns N' Roses

Ten recordings were inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame on Wednesday (March 20), following a two-year period in which the Hall was put on hiatus for a reevaluation. As before, this year’s choices are eclectic and wide-ranging, including several that played a key role in creating or popularizing sub-genres – Lauryn Hill ’s The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill (neo-soul), Donna Summer ’s “I Feel Love” (EDM) and De La Soul ’s 3 Feet High and Rising (alternative hip-hop).

Several changes were made during the hiatus period. The number of inducted recordings is down significantly from 25 to 30 in prior years. And while past classes have included repeat inductions by such Hall of Fame mainstays as The Beatles and Ella Fitzgerald, all of this year’s choices are by first-time inductees into the Hall.

Also, the inducted recordings will be greeted with more fanfare than in the past, when each class was merely announced via press release. This class will be saluted at the Grammy Museum’s inaugural Grammy Hall of Fame Gala and concert on May 21 at the NOVO Theater in Los Angeles. Significantly, the event was scheduled more than three months after the Feb. 4 Grammys to give it its own moment.

This year’s induction class consists of six singles and four albums. All four albums were the artists’ debut studio albums (or solo debut, in Hill’s case). The three other debut albums honored were Buena Vista Social Club ’s eponymous album, Guns N’ Roses ’ Appetite for Destruction and 3 Feet High and Rising . (Remarkably, Hill has not yet released a follow-up studio album, and Buena Vista Social Club disbanded without doing so.)

The inductees vary widely in terms of their commercial success. The list includes two Diamond-certified albums – Appetite for Destruction (18 million) and The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill (10 million). But it also includes a single, William Bell ’s “You Don’t Miss Your Water,” that peaked at a lowly No. 95 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Some of this year’s inducted recordings were showered with Grammy Awards at the time, including Hill’s album of the year winner The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill and The Doobie Brothers ’ record and song of the year winner “What a Fool Believes.” But many others weren’t even nominated when they were eligible, including Appetite for Destruction and “I Feel Love.”

The Grammy Hall of Fame was created in 1973 to honor recordings that were released prior to the inception of the Grammy Awards in 1958. Eligibility was soon changed to allow any recording released at least 25 years ago. Counting this year’s 10 inductees, it includes 1,152 recordings.

Let’s take a closer look at the 10 recordings being inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame this year. The titles are arranged alphabetically by artist.

William Bell, “You Don’t Miss Your Water”

Release Date: 1961

Label: Stax

Producer: Chips Moman (unlisted)

Hot 100 peak: No. 95

Grammy nominations: None. Bell finally received his first Grammy nominations in 2017, winning best Americana album for This Is Where I Live .

Notes: The complete thought on this bluesy lament about romantic regrets: “You don’t miss your water/ Till the well runs dry.” Bell, now 84, had a much bigger hit in 1977, “Tryin’ to Love Two,” which reached the top 10 on the Hot 100, but “You Don’t Miss Your Water,” his first Hot 100 entry, may be his most classic work. It has been recorded by such top artists as Otis Redding, Percy Sledge, The Byrds, Brian Eno, Taj Mahal, Jerry Lee Lewis and Peter Tosh & The Wailers.

Buena Vista Social Club, Buena Vista Social Club

Cuban singer Omara Portuondo performs with Papi Oviedo (R) and the Buena Vista Social Club Orchestra as the final curtain falls during the last concert of its "Adios" tour, officially bidding farewell, in the Teatro Karl Marx, on May 15, 2016 in Havana, Cuba.

Release Date: Sept. 16, 1997

Label: Nonesuch

Producer: Ry Cooder

Billboard 200 peak: No. 80

Grammy nominations: Best tropical Latin performance (won)

Notes: Buena Vista Social Club was an ensemble of Cuban musicians directed by Juan de Marcos González and American guitarist Ry Cooder. Their debut album was recorded at Havana’s EGREM studios in March 1996 and was released through World Circuit internationally and Nonesuch Records in the U.S. The album’s release was followed by a short concert tour in 1998. Footage from those dates, as well as from the recording sessions in Havana, was included in the 1999 documentary  Buena Vista Social Club .

De La Soul, 3 Feet High and Rising

Release Date: March 3, 1989

Label: Tommy Boy

Producer: Prince Paul

Billboard 200 peak: No. 15

Grammy nominations: Best rap performance for the track “Me Myself and I”

Notes: 3 Feet High and Rising  was the first of three collaborations by De La Soul and producer Prince Paul. The album spawned the hit “Me Myself and I,” which reached the top 40 on the Hot 100. The album’s title was inspired by the title of Johnny Cash’s 1959 country hit “Five Feet High and Rising.” This album reached a new peak on the Billboard 200 in March 2023 when De La Soul’s long-unavailable catalog appeared for the first time on global streaming services.

The Doobie Brothers, “What a Fool Believes”

Release Date: January 1979

Label: Warner Bros.

Producer: Ted Templeman

Hot 100 peak: No. 1 (one week)

Grammy nominations: Record and song of the year (won both); album of the year and best pop vocal performance by a duo, group or chorus for Minute by Minute

Notes: Michael McDonald and Kenny Loggins co-wrote this song, and Loggins was actually first to record it, on his 1978 album Nightwatch . But The Doobies’ record, featuring McDonald’s soulful vocals floating atop a cool synth arrangement, went all the way. The song topped the Hot 100 in April 1979, a pop/rock outlier at a time when disco was at its white-hot peak. It was the band’s second No. 1 hit, following “Black Water” in 1975. The band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2020.

Guns N’ Roses, Appetite for Destruction

Release Date: July 21, 1987

Label: Geffen

Producer: Mike Clink

Billboard 200 peak: No. 1 (five weeks)

Grammy nominations: None. The band received its first nomination for its follow-up album, G N’ R Lies.

Notes: How could this album have received no Grammy nominations? It didn’t really break through until 1988. At the end of the 1987 eligibility year on Sept. 30 of that year, it had climbed no higher than No. 70 on the Billboard 200. The album has spent nearly five years, all told, on that chart. It spawned three top 10 singles on the Hot 100 – “Welcome to the Jungle,” the Hot 100-topping “Sweet Child O’ Mine” and “Paradise City.” The band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2012.

Lauryn Hill, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill

Lauryn Hill photographed in 1998.

Release Date: Aug. 25, 1998

Label: Ruffhouse/Columbia

Producers: Lauryn Hill, Che Pope, Vada Nobles

Billboard 200 peak: No. 1 (four weeks)

Grammy nominations: Nine, resulting in five wins, including album of the year and best R&B album. It was the first hip-hop album to be voted album of the year.

Notes: The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill  melded neo-soul and R&B with hip-hop and reggae. Recording sessions took place from late 1997 to June 1998 mainly at Tuff Gong Studios in Kingston, Jamaica. The album spawned three top 40 hits on the Hot 100 – “Ex-Factor,” “Everything Is Everything,” and the No. 1-reaching “Doo Wop (That Thing).” The album, one of the most universally acclaimed releases of the 1990s, has proved to be a hard act to follow: Hill, now 48, has yet to release a follow-up studio album.

Wanda Jackson, “Let’s Have a Party”

Release Date: June 1960

Label: Capitol

Producer: Ken Nelson

Hot 100 peak: No. 37

Grammy nominations: None. Jackson received her first nomination in 1964 for best country & western vocal performance, female for Two Sides of Wanda Jackson .

Notes: This rockabilly track is one party invitation nobody is going to pass up. Elvis Presley recorded this song (under the title “Party”) for his 1957 film Loving You . His version appeared on the film’s soundtrack album, which topped the Billboard 200 for 10 weeks. Jackson recorded it for her first album, Wanda Jackson , released in 1958. Her version later appeared in the 1989 film Dead Poets Society , which starred Robin Williams. It’s easy to see Jackson’s influence on such subsequent popular singers as Tanya Tucker, Miranda Lambert and Elle King. Incidentally, that “party” is still going strong. Jackson, now 86, cracked the Billboard 200 in 2011 with an album titled The Party Ain’t Over .

Kid Ory’s Creole Orchestra, “Ory’s Creole Trombone”

Release Date: 1922

Label: Nordskog

Producer: N/A

Hot 100 peak: This pre-dated the Hot 100.

Grammy nominations: This pre-dated the Grammys.

Notes: “Ory’s Creole Trombone” is a spirited example of New Orleans jazz. Kid Ory wrote the piece and first recorded it in 1922 in Los Angeles, which is the version being honored here. The recording constituted the first issued recording session by an African American jazz band from New Orleans. Ory recorded the piece several times over the years. In 1927 he made a recording as part of Louis Armstrong and his Hot Five. Ory died in January 1973 at age 86.

Charley Pride, “Kiss an Angel Good Mornin’”

Charley Pride photographed circa 1971.

Release Date: Oct. 23, 1971

Label: RCA Victor

Producer: Jack Clement

Hot 100 peak: No. 21

Grammy nominations: Best county vocal performance, male. Ben Peters won best country song for writing the song.

Notes: Pride amassed 29 No. 1 hits on Billboard ’s Hot Country Songs chart, but this was his only song to make the top 40 on the Hot 100. The warm, mid-tempo ballad, which led the country chart for five weeks, was Pride’s signature song virtually from the time it was released in the fall of 1971 until his death nearly 50 years later. Ben Peters won a Grammy for writing the song, which contains this unforgettable couplet: “Kiss an angel good mornin’/ And love her like the devil when you get back home.” Pride was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2000. He received a lifetime achievement award from the Recording Academy in 2017. He died in 2020 at age 86.

Donna Summer, “I Feel Love”

Release Date: July 2, 1977

Label: Casablanca

Producer: Giorgio Moroder, Pete Bellotte

Hot 100 peak: No. 6

Grammy nominations: None. Summer received her first nominations the following year for “Last Dance” (which won) and “MacArthur Park.”

Notes: This icy, synthesized smash still sounds modern – and it sounded positively otherworldly when it was released in 1977. It’s one of Summer’s most influential hits, helping to lay the foundation for electronic dance music. “I Feel Love” logged 23 weeks on the Hot 100, more than any other Summer single. The futuristic-sounding smash has been covered by such artists as Bronski Beat, Messiah and Sam Smith. Summer died in 2012 at age 63. She was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2013 and received a lifetime achievement award from the Recording Academy earlier this year.
