CAA Travel Saskatchewan gives insight to recent Sunwing cancellations

caa travel moose jaw

Last week, the airline Sunwing cancelled most of their flights from Regina and Saskatoon to tropical destinations starting in February.

This has left travellers scrambling to either rebook through Sunwing from another Canadian city or get a refund and start from scratch re-planning their vacation.

The million-dollar question remains why did Sunwing suspend most of its Saskatchewan services for the winter season?

Terry Kaszas, CAA Saskatchewan's General Manager of Travel Services believes that Sunwing’s cancellations stemmed from their inability to recover after being back-logged from Christmas.

Saskatoon and Regina aren’t the only departure sites where Sunwing has suspended services. Winnipeg, Sudbury, North Bay, Halifax, Fredericton, and Moncton have announced in the past couple of weeks that flights are being suspended or having destination interruptions.

Kaszas does understand the frustrations of Saskatchewan residents of feeling forgotten by Sunwing.

“I don’t think there’s anything to worry about with Sunwing, personally I think they will come back stronger than ever,” adds Kaszas.

To make matters worse, a week ago marked the end of direct flights to Calgary from Regina and Saskatoon through Air Canada.

Luckily WestJet stepped up and filled the void left by Air Canada, as they announced the addition of two daily flights to Calgary from Regina and Saskatoon starting in February. Additionally, the low-cost airline Flair will be offering a daily flight to Calgary from Saskatoon.

The biggest frustration Kaszas has been hearing from customers rebooking their vacations is the waiting game.

“They were all booked to go wherever they were going for their vacation. Then all of a sudden it gets cancelled and then we have to start looking for space out of other gateways to try to keep the original dates that they had or something close to it.”

“People were coming from various parts of across the country to meet in destinations.”

Kaszas concluded by saying to be patient with their travel agents, as they are working as hard as they can to try to book you the perfect vacation.

So Beautiful I Could Cry

Aaron and I met when we were in AmeriCorps*NCCC together. Once we started dating, we were pretty much inseparable and when we had a vacation for Labor Day, Aaron decided to plan a trip.

1923328_511502512760_9216_n

He planned it all, and I had to solve little riddles to figure out where we were going next. The entire trip was incredible. We were still in that new love stage, where even challenges that come up are just laughable and seem like adventures. Perhaps the only thing I don’t remember fondly is when he dragged me out of bed to see the sunrise over Bryce Canyon. But was it worth it? Yes, yes, it was.

The sunrise at Arches. I don't even remember him dragging me out of bed for this, but apparently he did.

Anyways, the very first park we went to was Arches National Park. We hiked, we camped, we sat out under the stars, we watched the sunrise and the sunset. The second we left, I knew I needed to go back. But, in 9 years, we didn’t.

This spring, Aaron and I started planning the details of our trip to Colorado for Bekah’s run . We both had some vacation days miraculously not used up in the travel for our adoption, so we decided to add a few days on to our Colorado trip. Aaron suggested a Colorado state park, but I requested Arches. The few extra hours of driving? Absolutely worth it.

2016-10-08_0001

Aaron and I tried to decide the order of the hikes we wanted to do. We had a good idea of the length and difficulty of the hikes from our last trip, but we also wanted to make sure we hit them all at the best time of day.

2016-10-08_0004

Rangers tend to be excellent at teaching and interacting with kids. It’s a great opportunity to learn about the park from someone who lives there.

2016-10-08_0005

As we did the short hike around the Windows, Lena said “it’s so beautiful I could cry”.

2016-10-08_0006

After the Windows, we decided to do a harder hike, Delicate Arch. We were all pretty tired from the drive, and the hike involves some elevation gain, including some pretty steep sections. I wasn’t really enjoying it myself, but I had to tell the kids that this was going to be one to remember. Delicate Arch is the poster child for Arches and on every Utah license plate.

2016-10-08_0007

The hike is hard overall, but the worst part for me is the last bit where you walk along a ledge, with a rock on one side and a drop off on the other. Note the tiny person in the picture below.

2016-10-08_0008

But the view is worth it. There were a ton of people out at Delicate Arch that evening, including two couples from Kiev. Lyuda enjoyed talking to them about her family.

2016-10-08_0009

We lingered a bit of sunset, but we didn’t want to hike back in total darkness. We gave ourselves the remainder of daylight for the worst part of the hike and had to pull out flashlights for the rest of it.

2016-10-08_0012

It was completely dark and the stars were out by the time we got back to the parking lot. This is Wolfe Ranch, near the trailhead.

2016-10-08_0015

We had a campsite with an amazing view, but before I headed to sleep, I had to stay out and capture the stars. I saw a bat and a ringtail while I was out.

2016-10-08_0013

There was a thunderstorm in the distance.

2016-10-08_0011

I entered this picture in the National Parks photo contest. You can vote for it here .

2016-10-08_0017

Aaron got up early for a hike, so I stayed at the campsite while the kids slept. Like I said, the view was awesome. One guy even stopped to tell me that we had the very best campsite (true).

2016-10-08_0010

Once Aaron returned, we had to pack up and move our campsite. Aaron spent all summer regularly checking the Arches website to see if we could get campsites within the park, which aren’t easy to come by. He was able to get us campsites for both nights, although not the same one.

2016-10-08_0018

The kids loved playing in the sand at Sand Dune Arch.

2016-10-08_0019

We decided to head into Moab, the nearby town, to pick up some items and grab lunch. We went to the cutest little restaurant for lunch, Milt’s Stop and Eat. It was an inexpensive burger and fries kind of place, but I loved it because they had a ton of vegetarian options.

As we headed back to the park, it started to rain.

2016-10-08_0020

We decided to go back to the campsite for a bit. While everyone else laid down in the tent, Lena and I worked on her junior ranger booklet. She wanted to do it, but needed a bit of extra handholding to get it done.

2016-10-08_0021

After the rain let up, we decided to do one of the hardest, longest hikes, the Devil’s Garden loop. Aaron and I had done this hike and all of its little extra loops back in 2007. We were aware of the challenging parts, but also how worthwhile it is.

2016-10-08_0022

We brought hiking poles. Why, I don’t understand. They ended up being more of a burden.

2016-10-08_0023

That’s always a positive sign when hiking with 4 kids.

We hiked past Landscape Arch, the widest arch in the park. Then we got to this section where you scramble up a steep section of slickrock. I had done this before, remember? But, I was pretty confident I could not do it in that moment. Out of shape, heavy backpack  not designed for hiking, four kids… plus my fear of heights.  However, I knew what was at the top, so I somehow convinced myself to keep going.

2016-10-08_0024

This was at the top– an arch with an incredible view.

2016-10-08_0016

We contemplated our options at that point and ultimately decided to go back. It was starting to get late, and our pace with four kids was slow. I take that back– our pace with Gus was slow. The other 3 are excellent hikers, Reed especially.

We had a wonderful time in front of our campfire that night. We roasted hotdogs and make s’mores. We talked about real vs. perceived fear and how to stay safe (one child was afraid of walking to the bathroom). We talked about friendships and how not all are worthwhile. It was a wonderful conversation.

2016-10-08_0025

That night was pretty cloudy, so no star photos for me. Aaron was planning to complete the Devil’s Garden loop in the morning, and when he woke up very early to go, I saw that the sky had cleared. I offered a trade– I go out and take some photos and when I got back, he could have all the time he needed for his hike. He agreed.

2016-10-08_0026

I went back to the Windows, and while I missed most of the stars, I was able to enjoy the sunrise.

Even though I got back to camp early, all 4 of the kids were up. In our talk the night before, I sensed that Reed had been feeling slightly misplaced since Lyuda came home. Many things that used to be his and Aaron’s, were now his, Lyuda’s and Aaron’s. When Aaron said he was going to ask if any of the kids wanted to go, I suggested that he just invite Reed directly. Reed happily agreed.

2016-10-08_0027

I had other plans for my remaining 3 kids. It’s a very different pace without Reed. He keeps us all charging forward, and without him, we’re a little bit slower paced. We found a picnic area. Gus practiced writing his name, and the girls worked on postcards (which I have yet to mail– 6 weeks later).

Then we drove around and saw other sites. We saw Balanced Rock and Panorama Point. We spotted tons of lizards.

trying to make sure he sees a lizard

We enjoyed our slower paced morning, and then we picked Aaron and Reed up around lunch time. Sadly, this was the end of our Arches adventure. We headed away from the beautiful rocks, back to Colorado for part 2 of our trip.

Stay tuned to read about our time in Colorado!

7 Best Russian Mule Recipes

Nov 22, 2019

What is the best way to make and serve   the Russian Mule? In this post, we lay out the classic Russian Mule recipe along with six awesome variations that will keep you coming back for more! We also explain the origins of this classic drink and the best way to serve it. Read on!

Introduction

two Moscow Muled copper mugs with citrus slice on its rim and hand pouring yellow liquid into one mug

A truly exceptional cocktail is more than swishing alcohol together with your go-to mixture. Cocktails should heighten your senses with exquisite presentation, flavors, and aromas. Drinking itself brings people together to experience fun, share stories, and have a good laugh. Thus, any cocktail worth sipping needs a story and personality of its own. And one such cocktail is the Russian Mule.

The Russian Mule, also known as the Moscow Mule, is a cocktail that has been around for decades. There are a couple of stories that explain how it came into existence, but one of the most popular ones has its origins in Los Angeles. Story has it that in 1941, three people whose businesses were not doing so well found a way to make their products complement each other to build sales.

Jack Morgan, the owner of the Cock 'n' Bull pub, had a stock of ginger beer in his basement that wasn’t selling very well. John Martin had bought a vodka distillery in the 1930s, but that too was not doing well. Lastly, Sophie Berezinski had come to the United States from Russia with a load of copper mugs from her father’s factory that she hoped to sell. Together, as they discussed the woes of their ventures, they began entertaining the idea of a cocktail made of ginger beer, vodka, and lime juice served in a copper mug. That is how the Russian Mule was born, and it has enjoyed immense popularity ever since.

In this article, we’ll explore:

Making the Russian Mule

  • How is the Russian Mule served?
  • Russian Mule Recipes

The Russian Mule drink recipe has three main ingredients. Spicy ginger beer, vodka, and lime juice. Over time, many variations have emerged, but most of them still include these three. Today, the cocktail remains a favorite in many parts of the world, but more so in the United States.

How is the Russian Mule Served?

Since its inception, the copper mug has become the traditional cup in which the Russian Mule drink is served. After the meeting at the Cock ‘n' Bull, it’s reported that Martin, the owner of the vodka distillery, traversed the country popularizing the new cocktail. He would ask bartenders to pose for photos with a copper mug and a bottle of his vodka. They would keep one photo for display, and he would keep the other for marketing.

The best cocktail makers know that icy drinks served in copper cups have an extra sensation because the metal quickly takes on the chilled temperature of the cocktail. The mug's rim becomes cold almost instantly, giving your lips a frozen feeling. Copper is highly effective at insulating the cold temperature of liquids and deflecting heat. The mug’s handle helps preserve drink temperature and keeps the heat from your hand away from the walls of the copper mug.

What’s more, using copper cups enhances the individual flavors of vodka, ginger beer, and lime. According to some experts, once vodka comes into contact with the walls of the mug, copper starts to oxidize, enhancing the taste, and boosting the aroma of vodka slightly.

Cold copper brings to life lime juice, intensifying the tangy citrus notes while at the same time reducing the acidity to better compliment the spiciness of the ginger beer. Also, extra cold copper increases the bubbles in carbonated ginger, making the Russian Mule even fizzier, when compared to serving it in a glass or plastic container.

When all these flavors attain their maximum potential, they make the Russian Mule a classic American cocktail.

Here are some of the best recipes for the Russian Mule, along with some great variations on the classic:

The Classic Russian Mule Recipe

Preparation Time: 5 Minutes Serves: 1

Ingredients:

  • 4 oz ginger beer
  • 2 oz vodka
  • 1 oz fresh lime juice
  • 0.5 oz sugar syrup
  • 2 pieces of ginger

Instructions:

  • In a shaker, muddle the pieces of ginger then add vodka, sugar syrup, and lime juice.
  • Shake until they’re well combined and strain into a copper mug.
  • Top with ginger beer.
  • Add ice, and use a lime wedge to garnish.

This recipe contains the basic Russian Mule ingredients. The sugar syrup is used as a sweetener, which is easier to add to cold beverages compared to granulated sugar.

The English Russian Mule

  • 4 oz ginger beer
  • 2 oz English gin
  • 1 oz lime juice
  • 0.5 oz sugar syrup
  • Pour the ginger, lime juice, and sugar syrup into a mug and stir to mix.
  • Add ginger beer and ice.
  • Garnish with the lime wedge.

Gin is a favorite drink among the Britons, which makes it an ideal ingredient to add to this English version of the Russian Mule. It has a herbal, piney flavor that blends well with sweet, slightly spicy ginger beer.

One of the reasons why gin became so popular is because of its benefits to the body. To begin with, it has a much lower calorie count than other alcoholic drinks. Each shot comes at around 97 calories. In addition, it’s low in sugar, and these two attributes make it a good ingredient for people who are keen on managing their weight. Gin also helps reduce the signs of skin aging , given that its main ingredient, juniper, is rich in anti-oxidants.

The Mimic (Non- Alcoholic ) Russian Mule Recipe

copper mug with sliced lime and mint leaves

Preparation Time: 3 Minutes Serves: 1

  • 8 oz non-alcoholic ginger beer
  • 1 lime, sliced
  • 1 pinch mint
  • Muddle the sliced lime and mint in a shaker, then add ginger beer and shake.
  • Strain into a glass and garnish with a mint sprig.

This is a non-alcoholic version of the Russian mule cocktail. It comes with the same invigorating flavor and is a suitable option if you want to lay off the alcohol. For the best result, ensure the lime and mint are fresh. That way, they will release a lot of flavor and aroma into the Russian Mule drink.

The Russian-Mexican Mule Recipe

  • 2 oz tequila
  • 0.5 oz syrup
  • Combine the ginger beer, tequila, lime juice, and syrup in a copper mug.
  • Garnish with mint sprigs and serve.

Tequila and Mexico go hand in hand, and that’s what gives this recipe its Mexican identity. The drink is known for its burning sensation and is liked by many, while others dislike it in equal measure. However, when tequila is combined with ginger beer, its bitterness is balanced out and made more bearable to those who don’t fancy it. Of course, the lime juice and sugar syrup add more of the citrusy, sweet edge.

In addition, having a bit of tequila in your cocktail may aid with digestion. Tequila has high levels of insulin, which encourage the growth of good bacteria in the digestive tract, inducing better digestion. It’s also good for bones, can help control blood sugar by lowering its levels, and also reduces the level of pain perception. If you have been having trouble sleeping, a glass of this may help calm your nerves and ease you into a restful slumber.

Pineapple and Ginger Russian Mule

  • 1½ oz vodka
  • ¾ oz ginger simple syrup
  • 2 tbsp. fresh lime juice
  • ¼ oz pineapple juice
  • Splash of club soda
  • Pour vodka, lime juice, and ginger syrup into a cocktail shaker and combine.
  • Add an ice cube, then shake well.
  • Strain mixture into a copper mug and add pineapple juice.
  • Top with a splash of club soda.

For fruit lovers, this is the ideal Russian Mule drink recipe. The sweet and tart tropical flavors of the pineapple make it a refreshing drink suitable for any occasion. Club soda brings a mineral flavor, adding more texture to the drink.

Not to forget that pineapple juice has several health benefits. Firstly, it contains bromelain , an enzyme that has powerful anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties. It helps prevent and reduce swelling, bruising, and is useful in the treatment of injuries. Secondly, research has shown that this enzyme is instrumental in fighting the growth of cancerous cells in the body when used alongside chemotherapy. When bromelain is consumed regularly, it can help reduce the risks of developing colon and prostate cancer.

Lastly, thanks to its vitamin C content, pineapple juice reduces the risk of coronary heart disease. With such benefits, a mug of this Russian Mule variation  seems like a good thing any day.

Orange Russian Mule

Prep Time: 5 Minutes Serves: 1

  • 2 oz orange juice
  • 4 oz non-alcoholic ginger beer
  • 2 tbsp. lime juice
  • 1 Orange slice
  • Combine vodka, orange juice, ginger beer, and lime juice in a glass.
  • Add ice and stir.
  • Garnish with an orange slice.

This is another sweet and refreshing drink for anyone looking to brighten up their cocktail. Even better, orange juice comes with a host of health benefits that makes this Russian Mule variation  all the more worthwhile. This citric drink is full of important nutrients such as potassium , folate, and vitamin C. These nutrients promote bone health, boost the immune system, and protect against cardiovascular disease.

Orange juice is also a rich source of anti-oxidants that fight oxidative damage in the body. These include flavonoids and carotenoids. Besides helping prevent diseases such as cancer, anti-oxidants also promote healthier skin.

The Aussie-Russian Mule Cocktail

hand holding wooden spoon stirring liquid in a glass pitcher

  • 2 oz ginger beer
  • 2 oz dark rum
  • 0.5oz sugar syrup
  • 1 lime wedge
  • Mix the ginger beer, rum, sugar syrup, and lime juice in a copper mug.

What gin is for Britain, rum is for Australia. Dark rum, with its notable taste, makes smooth cocktails. These are especially spicy and delicious when ginger beer is added into the mix.

A Drink That Makes Your Day

With so many variations on the classic Russian Mule cocktail , it's up to you to decide which one appeals best to your tastes and preferences. To take your cocktail experience to the next level, make sure to get some authentic copper mugs for your next batch of Russian Mules!
