Elton John Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour 2021

Elton John Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour 2021

Elton john’s farewell yellow brick road tour two remaining mt smart stadium concerts rescheduled for january 2021 - shows move to friday 15 & saturday 16 january 2021 -.

Despite the best efforts of a performer who never wants to disappoint his fans, upon further consultation from doctors and specialists, it has this evening been decided that Sir Elton John’s two remaining Mt Smart Stadium, Auckland, performances will be rescheduled to Friday 15th and Saturday 16th January 2021.

“I’m incredibly disappointed to have to reschedule my remaining Auckland dates and I want to send my sincerest apologies to my amazing fans for any inconvenience caused”, said Elton.

“I always want to be able to give one hundred percent and I’m afraid that, right now, I’m not able to do that. I am grateful for the love and loyalty I have been shown by all of you and I can’t wait to return in January next year to perform my final New Zealand shows.”

Promoter, Michael Chugg, said “Elton’s a performer, he puts everything into his live shows, and as you can imagine he’s just devastated at having to postpone his Auckland dates. He has to listen to his doctors and recover properly right now. But don’t worry, you better believe he’ll be back and better than ever in January next year.”

Due to Elton John’s international Farewell Yellow Brick Road dates filling the remainder of the calendar year, the performer will return at the earliest possible opportunity; January 2021.

Tickets for Elton’s Wednesday 19th February concert will be valid for Friday 15th January 2021.

Tickets for the Thursday 20th February show will be valid for Saturday 16th January 2021.

If you are unable to attend the rescheduled shows on Friday 15th and Saturday 16th January 2021, please contact Ticketmaster to request a refund.

NOTE: At this stage, all remaining Australian shows will go ahead as planned.

In the words of pop royal Elton John, “I think it’s going to be a long, long time” – in this case for the 40,000 odd concert-goers driving in the rain to his dual finale concerts at Mt Smart over the weekend.

That’s because the summer concert season in Auckland has coincided with rail closures on the Southern line, leading to Auckland Transport tweeting out a since-rescinded recommendation that people should drive to the venue.

Count the headlights on the highway, indeed.

Confusion and traffic abounded outside the venue last week following the Red Hot Chili Peppers concert last week, where Anthony Kiedis’ lyrics “get there quick, by street but not the freeway” proved somewhat prophetic as thousands of people were unable to be siphoned out of the area by train.

Stuff reported a journalist was unable to use their ticket to board a bus after the show, rendering one of the event’s transport solutions a moot point.

Part of the problem is KiwiRail’s closures of rail lines for the network upgrade. It’s a near total rebuild, with stage one seeing trains unable to operate between Ōtāhuhu and Newmarket until late March.

“During this time we will be digging up and replacing the rock foundations under the tracks and improving drainage in the rail corridor, which is a crucial part of preparing the network for the more frequent trains to come with CRL,” said KiwiRail Chief Operating Officer David Gordon.

But for nights like this, where Penrose station provides a crucial transport hub for thousands of people, it’s at best poor timing.

Public transport expert Dr Timothy Welch from the University of Auckland’s School of Architecture and Planning isn’t planning on heading along to see the rocket man, but said those who do could expect a bit of chaos and gridlock on the way in and out.

He said the tweet urging Elton John concertgoers to drive or walk to Mt Smart Stadium shows that Auckland Transport doesn’t have enough power over its own transport network.

“We’re talking about 40,000 people potentially gathering in a single location with no public transportation but buses, so I don’t see a way around chaos,” he said. “The Red Hot Chill Peppers played on the 21st and that was pretty chaotic, and I think Elton John probably draws a bigger audience.”

travel to elton john auckland

The chaos may be mitigated by Auckland Transport’s promise that bus operators will all be aware of the ticket for a ride programme, but Welch said the event is indicative of broader issues with Auckland transport system.

“This whole thing comes down to the amount of control that AT actually has over its public transport network, which is surprisingly low,” he said. “They don’t own the rail lines so KiwiRail kind of calls the shots there over when they close them. Then there’s contractors for buses, which means you can ask them to do certain things and that doesn’t mean that’s necessarily what will happen all of the time.”

He said these factors have come together to cause these events that get high publicity negative PR for the often-maligned council-controlled organisation.

Special event buses are set to depart from the city centre every 10 minutes from 5pm, departing after the concert back to the city for one hour after the concert is finished.

This should alleviate some of the post-show fracas, and Welch hoped people who aren’t usually bus-riders would have a positive experience with them.

“For a lot of those people, it’s their first or only time using public transport, so if they are met with chaos in their one time using it, they’re more likely to shy away from it in future.”

That’s bad news for reducing traffic and getting those carbon emissions down.

It’s a crucial time of year for public transport infrequent users and getting them into the habit – with people travelling to popular events like St Jerome’s Laneway Festival this weekend and the Lantern Festival’s post-Covid return next weekend.

The rail closures are solved in part by rail replacement bus services, but the Public Transport Users Association this week voiced concerns that these services are letting passengers down.

Association national coordinator Jon Reeves noted a train service from Papakura to Britomart station last Saturday afternoon had been replaced with buses.

“I was disappointed to see AT has replaced two half-hourly 350-seat trains with just one, hourly, 40-seat bus all weekend between Papakura and Otahuhu (to connect with trains to and from Britomart),” he said. “The bus was full.”

He also voiced concerns that one wheelchair-accessible space per bus was all there was to replace the plethora of disabled-friendly space on two different trains.

“That is appalling. It is not fair and not first world public transport for disabled passengers,” he said.

He also cited the slower journey completion times of rail buses as making the system less user-friendly and efficient during this rail closure period, and called for rail bus service frequency increased to match those of the trains they were replacing.

Meanwhile, for Kiwis keen to take their last opportunity to see Reggie Dwight live and in person behind his piano, this weekend they may have to put up with a bit of chaos around the stadium and no small amount of rain.

That’s because as John himself sang on 2001’s Songs from the West Coast , this train doesn’t stop there anymore.

A concert-goer on her way to Friday’s concert was excited to see the show, but disappointed in the weather.

“It’s a bit disappointing, every time I go to Mt Smart it rains, when I went to Adele it poured,” she said.

She said the transport options for the night had her scratching her head about the best way to get out to the venue.

“It’s difficult and I think a recommendation to take your car is definitely not the way to go. Saying to go early is a good plan but now with the weather, going early is not such a good plan, so it’s going to put a lot of pressure on the roads. If we could be assured there would be a train, we would definitely,” she said.

“I’m looking forward to hearing him live – I’m waiting for Candle in the Wind.”

There may not be any candles tonight, but there’s sure to be plenty of wind.

What you need to know ahead of Elton John’s Auckland concerts this weekend

Entertainment.

Sir Elton John performing at Mt Smart stadium in 2020. Photo / David Watson

This Friday and Saturday will see the Rocketman take to the stage at Auckland’s Mt Smart Stadium for the final time. After almost three years, he’s back to finish what he started in 2020.

And  Auckland is in for a weekend of wild weather  as we head into the city’s anniversary weekend, with heavy rain and strong winds in store from Friday morning, according to MetService.

The rain continues on Saturday, which won’t be welcome news for Elton John fans in the largely unsheltered Mt Smart - and with up to 40,000 people expected to pack out the stadium, it’s best to be prepared.

So, here’s everything you need to know before heading along to the Friday and Saturday night shows.

When does it start?

Gates open at 5.30pm, with Elton John himself to start performing promptly at 7.30pm - there are no supporting acts.

He’ll play for three hours until 10.30pm.

How to get there

With Penrose Station closed on Friday and the rail network closure on Saturday, it’s best to plan your travel in advance, Auckland Transport has warned.

Travel on a scheduled bus service is included with your ticket from 3.30pm until the end of service that day - show your ticket when you board.  Check Auckland Transport for rail bus replacements  running on Friday and Saturday night.

  • Elton John fans entitled to partial refund - Consumer NZ
  • Benny and the Jet: Elton John's plane given special exemption by Sydney airport
  • Wild weather: Auckland Harbour Bridge warning issued to motorists

Special event buses will depart from the city centre from the corner of Gore St and Quay St every 10 minutes from 5pm, departing after the concert back to the city for one hour after the concert is finished.

Shuttles will also operate between Ōtāhuhu and Penrose Station from 5pm every five minutes. It’s about a 10-minute walk to Mt Smart from Penrose Station.

If you plan to get there in a taxi, Uber, or other rideshare service, you can be dropped off and picked up on Station Rd - about a five to 10-minute walk from Mt Smart Stadium.

Road closures will be in place for the concert, so stick to the dedicated drop-off and pickup area on Station Rd.

If you plan to park and walk to the venue, you can park for free at two locations from 4pm on a first-in, first-served basis - 667b Great South Rd and 645 Great South Rd.

Free parking within a 1km walk of the stadium is also available on these streets: Neilson St, Captain Springs Rd, Autumn Place, Southpark Place, Mays Rd, Mays Lane, Malvern Rd, Henderson Place, Goodman Place, and Patrick St.

Auckland concertgoers noted after  last week’s Red Hot Chilli Peppers gig at Mt Smart  that it took a while to get out of the venue when the concert ended - so give yourself plenty of time to get where you need to go.

What to bring - and what not to bring

Several items are not permitted inside the stadium, including backpacks or bags larger than 30cm high, 30cm wide, and 10cm deep. Professional cameras, cameras with a removable lens or cameras with a lens bigger than a standard watch face are not permitted - though you can bring a small personal camera and, of course, your phone.

You can’t bring in commercial or branded food or drinks, though you can bring small quantities of food prepared at home. You can bring either an empty plastic bottle without a lid or a sealed plastic bottle of water holding up to 750ml for refill at the free water stations in the venue.

Other forbidden items include dangerous goods, knives, tasers, fireworks, beach balls, beanbags, confetti, selfie sticks or chilly bins. Find a full list of what not to bring  here .

And with wild weather looming, don’t forget your rain jacket or poncho, as well as something warm to wear on the walk back from the venue - just make sure you leave the umbrella at home.

Farewell Yellow Brick Road

IMPORTANT UPDATE: SATURDAY 28 JANUARY 2023

It is with a very heavy heart that both Elton John concerts at Mt Smart Stadium must be cancelled. Weather conditions at the stadium drastically worsened across the upper North Island last night leaving promoters, Chugg Entertainment, AEG Presents and Frontier Touring with no possible option but to stop Friday’s show from going ahead.

Auckland was subsequently declared to be in a state of emergency and we are now forced to cancel tonight’s show at Mt Smart Stadium. Promoters, emergency services and venue staff have deemed the event as unsafe due to surrounding flooding and continued disruptions to roads and patron safety across the city.

Check your email inbox junk and spam folders for communication from our official ticketing partner, Ticketmaster, regarding refund processes.

Elton John is deeply saddened by the cancellation of his last New Zealand shows on the Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour:

"Following the instruction of the emergency services, we have no option but to cancel tonight’s show in Auckland.

Two years ago, I was devastated to have to reschedule my final New Zealand shows and was committed to fulfilling my promise of returning to say a final farewell. This is a very difficult decision which doesn’t come lightly, and I’m so sorry to all my fans who bought tickets. Cancelling shows is always the very last resort, but we have to think of my team, the venue staff and fan safety.

Vendors will be in touch regarding refunds, and in the meantime, my thoughts are with everyone in Auckland during this extreme weather. Please stay safe.

Elton, his team, Chugg Entertainment, AEG Presents and Frontier Touring extend their deepest sympathies to those that have been effected by this devastating weather event. Our thoughts are with those that have lost loved ones in this terrible time.

Elton John’s three-year Farewell Yellow Brick Road global tour has already been hailed as one of his most “energetic, dazzlingly-original and joyful celebrations”.

Elton’s legendary catalogue, including beloved songs ‘Bennie and the Jets’, ‘Rocket Man’, ‘Tiny Dancer’, ‘Crocodile Rock’, ‘Philadelphia Freedom’ and more, are showcased in a musical masterpiece that is a “reflective and stunning tribute to a great artist’s career” (NME), also celebrating his 50-plus year collaboration with lyricist Bernie Taupin - one of the great song-writing partnerships of all time.

ELTON JOHN FAQ's

Public transport.

Due to the Rail Network Replacement, public transport services will be reduced.  We strongly encourage anyone enquiring to look into this advance, allow lots of time for queues and travelling from the drop off point to the venue, coming through security and finding your seats.

Friday Night:  The Penrose train station is CLOSED so buses (with limited capacity) will replace trains.

Saturday Night:  Full network closure so no trains will be operating.

For further information on public transport visit  Auckland Transport. Or use the  Auckland Transport journey planner  as a useful tool to plan your journey from your current location.

Mobility parking

We have had huge demand for mobility parking for these shows. We cannot accommodate anyone who does not hold a mobility parking permit. As an alternate option, we suggest you’re dropped at the drop off point on Station Road. From there you will need to make your way down Maurice Road (this is about a 10–15-minute walk).

If you come to Gate B you can be assisted by mobility volunteers with wheelchairs/buggies to get to your seats. This service will be busy, so your patience is appreciated. There will be seats at Gate B for you to sit down while you wait for assistance.

Info regarding some park and walk and street parking (within 1km of venue) is also available on the Auckland Transport website.

If you are attending in a wheelchair and are unsure if you have an accessible ticket (not all areas of the stadium can be accessed by wheelchair) you will need to contact Ticketmaster: 09 970 9711 or visit  www.ticketmaster.co.nz/help

Hints and tips for improving your chances of getting Elton John tickets

Make sure you have a my ticketmaster account.

Get the basics covered before tickets go on sale by logging in and checking your Ticketmaster account ahead of time. If you don’t have a Ticketmaster Account then make sure you sign up in advance –  Ticketmaster.com.au .

Sign into your My Ticketmaster account ahead of time

Remember to triple check your passwords, account information, and billing information are all filled in correctly in advance, that way you’re not facing any last-minute account updates when trying to process your order.

Keep your options open with ‘Best Available’

Save time by searching “Best Available,” which scans all sections fast – it’s quicker than searching sections one at a time.

Keep an eye on the clock

There will be a time limit applied to all transactions as they’re progressed through the ticket purchasing stages. Remember to keep an eye on the timer on your screen and move through the processing pages as quickly as possible (this is even easier when you’ve completed the account set-up stage we mentioned above).

Don’t refresh your screen

Stick to one window while you’re in the  Waiting Room  and when you’re being pushed through  the Smart Queue  and always resist the urge to refresh.

Hitting the refresh button means you’ll lose your place in the queue and, as frustrating as it can get, patience is the only way to win this game. Ticketmaster is equipped with sophisticated systems that are designed to manage and process ticket purchases as quickly as possible. The queuing system that appears on your screen will place you at the front of the line as soon as possible.

Remember: there are a lot of fans

We’re expecting this to be a very popular event. When a popular event goes on sale there are hundreds, and sometimes thousands, of customers all attempting to purchase tickets at the same time. Tickets are sold as long as seats are available, and when an act is this popular, sometimes they go very quickly.

Be sure to follow the above tips to ensure you have the best chance of snapping up some tickets.

AT apologise for Elton John transport announcement

Elton John

Elton John (Source: Breakfast)

Auckland Transport has apologised for causing confusion after facing backlash for recommending people drive to the Elton John concert at Mt Smart tonight.

Last night, AT made a post to Facebook saying: "Heading to see Elton John? Plan your journey in advance and travel early if you can.

"Driving to the concert is recommended, but if you can’t, there are public transport options included in your concert ticket."

The agency faced massive backlash online, with the closure of trains in the city being a double blow to concertgoers.

In a statement this afternoon, AT apologised for the confusion their release caused and reassured Aucklanders that there is a full public transport plan in place.

"A message was published last night on our Facebook page that suggested people should drive to the Elton John concert in light of the partial closure of the rail network by KiwiRail," a spokesperson said.

"We want to reassure Aucklanders there is a full transport plan in place, which provides for a range of options. Via the promotion, we have reinforced these options to all ticketholders.

"We apologise for the confusion this has caused. We have since updated the post.

"Given the partial closure of the rail network by KiwiRail tonight and full closure on Saturday night, the plan is similar to that used for the Billy Joel concerts at Eden Park, with greater capacity on bus special event services and extra options for parking."

AT said special busses would be in place for the event, with shuttles from the CBD to the concert departing every 10 minutes before and after the show.

Special busses will also be shuttling between Ōtāhuhu and Penrose while the Southern Line is out of action.

A number of Auckland councillors criticised AT's communication, including Josephine Bartley - she said it made no sense.

"We have just built the first electric bus depot in Australasia. We should be promoting public transport, but now we're encouraging people to get in their cars and drive? It just made no sense," she said.

Auckland Stadiums' James Parkinson told 1News that public transport is vital when a big concert rolls into town.

"We've worked closely with Auckland Transport for over 10 years now to provide special event services for our large concert events, and it is frustrating for all concerned, including Auckland Transport, that we don't have the full use of the rail network for this weekend," he said

"Typically, for a concert, we'll have about 30% of our patrons that make use of the public transport operation, so 70% of our patrons find a different way of getting to and from the venue."

Auckland University’s Dr Tim Welch called the messaging “awkward” and said AT needs to adopt a new model for these kinds of events.

"Essentially AT told people there were about 750 carparks so barring 53 people getting in one car and travelling, which we've never seen those numbers before, they really need to seek other modes," he said.

He also highlighted that recommending so many people drive could be a safety concern.

“And from a safety perspective, not just traffic jams but also people having a few drinks while they're enjoying the concert and trying to get home, the last thing we want people doing is getting behind the wheel.”

Auckland Transport is urging Elton John concert-goers to drive or walk to Mt Smart Stadium on Friday and Saturday night, prompting people to express their dismay and disbelief at the organisation’s advice.

In a statement today, AT - the organisation that runs public transport in the city - said that the Penrose Train station will be closed on Friday due to the current stage of the Rail Network Rebuild and no trains will be running on Saturday.

“To take advantage of the generally low passenger numbers over the long weekend, Auckland’s rail network will be closed, meaning no trains will be running, on Saturday,” said AT.

On AT’s Facebook page, the organisation added: “Heading to see Elton John? Plan your journey in advance and travel early if you can. Driving to the concert is recommended, but if you can’t there are public transport options included in your concert ticket.”

One person on social media replied: “Lol. Where does everyone park? On the field? This is incompetent even by the usual standards.”

Another said they were ‘speechless at the incompetence’ of AT.

AT said 255 free car parks will be available at two local businesses from 4pm on the day of the concerts and will be on a first-come, first-served basis.

A further 506 free, non-time limited car parking is available on streets that are within a 2km walk from Mt Smart Stadium, AT said.

Up to 40,000 people are expected to pack out the stadium.

AT’s group manager for metro services Darek Koper said: “We are dedicated to running the best public transport network we can, but unfortunately with KiwiRail’s rail maintenance and project work this weekend there’s a big train sized gap in our network.”

Koper said At is asking Aucklanders to consider driving and walking if they can.

“For people who are unable to drive and walk to the concert we will be putting on free special event buses from the city centre, but capacity on these buses will be limited.

“As always, we’re encouraging people to plan ahead and travel early to make sure they don’t miss the beginning of the concert, especially since there’s no support act for Elton John.”

Gates at Mt Smart will open at 5.30pm, with Elton John himself due to start performing promptly at 7.30pm.

When does it start?

Gates open at 5.30pm, with Elton John himself to start performing promptly at 7.30pm - there are no supporting acts. He’ll play for three hours until 10.30pm.

At concert travel muck-up: it's embarrassing, richard hills says.

There were already 11,000 people at Mt Smart stadium for Friday night's Elton John concert when it was announced that it had been cancelled due to the weather.

Fans are describing Auckland Transport's plans to help them get to and from Elton John's concerts in the supercity this weekend as a fiasco with tonight's concert now cancelled due to the weather.

Two concerts were due at Mt Smart Stadium before tonight's concert was called off in the face of heavy rain that has been affecting the city for several hours.

However, less than 30 minutes before Elton John was due to take the stage at Mt Smart stadium, organisers pulled the pin on his concert.

Auckland Transport tweeted that tonight's show had been cancelled due to the weather, saying its operations team was working to redirect special event buses to get people home from Mt Smart stadium.

ELTON JOHN UPDATE: Given the weather, tonight's show has been cancelled. Our operations team is working to redirect special event buses to help get people back home from Mt Smart as soon as possible. We're asking for everyone's patience as our team works to get people home safely — Auckland Transport (@AklTransport) January 27, 2023

Frontier Touring Publicist Maria Robinson said there were around 11,000 people already at the rain soaked venue when the announcement was made with a crowd of 30,000 expected.

Organisers said they were waiting to see what the weather situation was tomorrow, before deciding if the Saturday night concert could go ahead.

Ahead of the cancellation announcement, there had been a storm over AT's advice that "driving is recommended" - complete with parking instructions despite it being the agency with a core aim of promoting public transport.

The move has been heavily criticised by councillors for what appears to be a severe lack of organisation.

Added to the difficulties facing concertgoers has been a key train station closure and no train services in the city at all on Saturday for Elton John's second show following a decision by KiwiRail to shut the lines for maintenance.

The chair of Auckland Council's environment committee Richard Hills at Beach Haven beach.

Auckland councillor Richard Hills said it was very frustrating and embarrassing for Aucklanders as well as those from outside the city visiting for the concert.

"Everything from communication to planning to pushing out the barrow to get as much public transport as possible feels like a big swing and a big miss."

He said Auckland Transport was not incompetent.

In the last 10 years it had improved and he had championed its efforts, however, lately it had seemed as though AT had too much on and was getting overwhelmed. It ran the risk of turning people off public transport due to their loss of confidence in it.

The line closures were frustrating and the work being done should have been done years ago.

For the Elton John concert a Facebook post yesterday had advised fans to drive when in fact 80 buses were available to carry fans on a continual basis from the CBD to Mt Smart Stadium.

"People are very confused on what actually is available."

It had taken until this afternoon for the social media post to be corrected and explain the full list of options, which include a train and shuttle buses plus the 80 buses going constantly from the central city.

"There is no excuse for it. It's completely frustrating and embarrassing."

Hills also believed KiwiRail should have cooperated and done its maintenance at 3am rather than during the time when trains were needed for Saturday night's concert.

"People are going to have - on top of the rain - a pretty horrendous night trying to figure out how to get to and from the stadium."

With the FIFA Women's World Cup due later this year he was keen to sit down with all the relevant organisations to try and ensure there was no repeat of this weekend's shambles.

'We got it wrong' - AT

Auckland Transport group manager of metro services Darek Koper said it was disappointing people were unable to use the trains this weekend. The trains were "the backbone" of special events but with KiwiRail lines closed for both line and overall maintenance the option was unavailable.

For tonight's concert some trains were running to Ōtahuhu and from there, shuttle buses were available to carry concertgoers who also had the option of using buses which were running every 10 minutes from the CBD.

There were different arrangements for the concerts today and Saturday, he said.

Asked if he was embarrassed about AT's main recommendation that Elton John fans should drive to the concerts, he said he was.

The key message around the special event transport, including the train and replacement buses, was missing from the original travel advice.

"We got it wrong... It works against what my role is and what we do as an organisation but unfortunately it was a mistake, it was an error in providing incomplete information for which we apologise."

Negotiations had taken place with KiwiRail but they were unable to defer their maintenance, he said.

Koper agreed bus capacity would fall short of the numbers of people who could have travelled by train. About 70 could fit on a bus while a train could carry around 300 people.

Asked about how much confidence people could have in Auckland Transport he said the organisation was doing its best, however KiwiRail also had a role to play to make assets available at times such as the Elton John concerts.

"Unfortunately we have a limited resources. We are currently dealing with an extreme bus driver shortage which limits our bus options as an alternative, therefore, we have quite a challenging situation today."

Elton John's New Zealand concert canceled due to severe weather and torrential rain

WELLINGTON, New Zealand — Torrential rain and wild weather in Auckland on Friday caused disruptions throughout the city and an Elton John concert to be canceled just before it was due to start.

About 40,000 people were expected to attend the evening concert at Mt Smart Stadium in New Zealand’s largest city. Thousands were already at the venue when organizers decided to cancel not long before John was due to take the stage at 7:30 p.m.

The concert was billed as a final farewell tour for John. Frontier Touring, one of the concert promoters, tweeted the concert had been canceled due to unsafe weather conditions.

Many concertgoers who had braved the conditions were frustrated the decision hadn’t been made hours earlier.

Weather agency MetService warned of flash flooding and hazardous driving conditions throughout the city. On Friday night, transport authorities closed parts of State Highway 1, the main highway that bisects Auckland.

'This is probably the icing on the cake': Elton John blown away playing concert on White House lawn

Video posted online showed waist-deep water in some places, and authorities were asking residents in flood-prone areas to be prepared in case they needed to evacuate.

Lawmaker Ricardo Menéndez posted a video of water surging into residential houses. “We’ve just had to evacuate our home as the water was already rising rapidly and coming in aggressively,” he tweeted.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand said it had taken over 1,000 calls for help, but that many calls were from people who had flooded properties. The agency was urging callers to clear the lines for those in immediate danger.

The unseasonable weather also caused some flights to be delayed or canceled.

Auckland Airport said it had reduced its runway operations after an arriving aircraft had damaged runway lighting.

Friday weather updates:  Winter storm to hit the West, blizzard and dangerous wind chills forecast for some

“This is largely impacting international arrivals and departures and larger aircraft travelling domestically,” the airport wrote on Twitter. “Our maintenance team is on site and is working hard to fix the damage.”

Auckland Mayor Wayne Brown told Radio New Zealand “We need the rain to stop. That’s the main issue.”

Our trip to NOT see Elton John in Auckland!

travel to elton john auckland

My husband turned 50 back in June 2022 and for his birthday I splurged out and surprised him with VIP tickets to see Elton John in Auckland, NZ!

Back stage tour, photo in front of Elton’s piano, goodie bag, front row seats right smack bang in the middle, in front of Sir Elton himself… Excited much… Hell Yes!!

After I purchased these tickets, Elton released concert dates for Newcastle. Now let me explain the irony here, we have an apartment on Newcastle Harbour which is a 5 minute drive to the stadium where Elton was playing 🤦‍♀️

Anyway, we decided to make a little mini get away to Auckland, concert and 4 days of site seeing.  I see no negatives here LOL.  Fly out on a Thursday to Auckland and back home on the following Wednesday. YEAH!!!!

Now my husband loves Elton John, seen him 6 times already so he loved his present.  Super excited to be that close to such an amazing artist.

The time finally came… Concert Time!!!

We were booked to fly out with Air New Zealand on Thursday 26th January, again quite ironic Australia Day LOL

We had some family medical issues I needed to be home for quite urgently so we had to delay our flights by 24 hours… Costly to change out flights but worth it for family and peace of mind.

Now that was the first of our dilemmas on this little trip and it wasn’t going to be the last…

We made it to Sydney Airport all excited, knowing everything was good at home, smooth transition through security… Hello Airport Bar!!!  boarded and now on our way…..

travel to elton john auckland

Here is a HINT for flying with Air New Zealand… your ticket does not include a meal… you must pay extra when purchasing a ticket for this….

Hmmmm thought we must have been flying Jetstar for a minute there.

We were almost at Auckland when the captain announced….

We will be starting our descent into Auckland but we will not be descending very low as there is a lot of rain, wind and there are issues with runway lighting.  We will be moving into a holding pattern and awaiting further instructions…  I hope everyone read that in an offical Captain sounding voice LOL

travel to elton john auckland

OK, so that doesn’t seem so bad, hmmm lets see how we go!

The next announcement was we were diverting to Christchurch!

WTF! That is on the South Island, we needed to be on the North Island!  Oh Gosh…. What is going on down there?

Then another announcement… we will be refuelling in Christchurch then heading back to Auckland! YES!!! Ok, this is good, big sigh of relief…

But that relief didn’t last long as another announcement was that we will be disembarking and not heading back to Auckland… Oh gosh! Talk about mixed signals 😂

Now, as you know you can’t just pop a text out mid flight and find out what is going on. We were lucky to be sitting next to where the cabin crew were chatting so we got some further information.

  • Auckland is flooded!
  • The airport is flooded!
  • The roads to the airport are cut off!
  • Cars are underwater!
  • Houses are flooded!

travel to elton john auckland

We landed in Christchurch, disembarked our flight.  All flights into Auckland were being diverted to Christchurch Airport so you can imagine how many people were in the Airport trying to get their bags, go through Customs and get the hell out of there!

Not only that but an announcement was made that there was no available accommodation in Christchurch being organised so we were advised to search for our own accommodation.  Thankfully my husband was already onto it and he had secured ourselves a room at one of the airport motels, Sudima.

Lucky! Now this was to be one of our first lucky breaks…

Standing in line with thousands of others trying to navigate security, baggage collection and customs, you start chatting to those around you… well I do anyway LOL

I found out that most people on our flight were only transiting through Auckland, some to the Cook Islands, Los Angeles, Honolulu.  Others were diverted to Christchurch were flying in from Honolulu, China, Sydney.  I also heard that a flight from Dubai almost got here then was turned around to go back to Dubai, same with a flight out of the USA.  Can you imagine flying 13 hours or so to go nowhere!!!!

travel to elton john auckland

I guess we weren’t so bad after all….

After finally leaving the airport at 10:30pm (NZ time) we walked 5 minutes to Sudima to have some food, definitely a drink and hopefully a good night sleep.

We made it, walking as fast as we could… bloody hell it was cold, the wind blowing and of course I wore a short flowing dress for the flight…

So imagine this, I have my bag, its raining, its windy, its cold and I am trying to run… trying to hold my dress down… trying not to go faster than the stupid wheels on my bag are built for… trying not to laugh or cry what that was going on LOL. It would have been a sight to see that’s for sure.

We got to our accommodation and there was a line upon of about 15 deep trying to check in… Thankfully we were all in the same boat and were just pleased we all had a place to sleep that night… Well some were definitely whinging more than others… like a lot!!! But hey people deal with things differently… well that is what I was telling myself to get through the wait LOL

All of a sudden I remembered the accommodation I had booked in Auckland at Four Point by Sheraton.  These guys were amazing! I had chatted to them via the Bonvoy Marriott app before leaving to change my arrival date.  No charge… thank you! Now I messaged again to say that we would not make it tonight but were still hoping to arrive the following day.  All good, not charge again!

After securing our room key… I said to my husband, we are going straight to the bar first before we head up to the room…

Sat down and said bring me something strong to my husband LOL. He came back… the bar was closed WTF!!!

It was admittedly 11:30pm but hey there were hundreds of people coming in from the airport, no food, no drinks, tired… keep the bloody bar open!!!

So we head to the room, NO MINI BAR…

Ok, so I did not get upset or annoyed at anything we had been through so far but this was texting my patience… The restaurant was closed as well but room service was available, albeit with at least a 2 hour delay, which I could fully understand.

So off we went for a couple of minutes walk to McDonald’s… midnight Maccas oh I felt like I was a teenager again!

Sleep Time…

Up we get, refreshed, off for our morning walk!

travel to elton john auckland

Then back to the realities of the situation….

Ok, so here we have it… It is Saturday morning, Auckland Airport is closed, Auckland has now been declared a state of emergency, AEG Presents keep telling me that Elton John is still going ahead… So we decide to sit it out until lunch time to decide, either…

  • We hopfully get a flight to Auckland, although we have resigned to the fact that we will miss the VIP tour but may still get to the concert.
  • Hire a car, do a little tour of the top of the South Island, then drive back to Auckland arriving on Wednesday for our flight home

There was not point in us heading to Auckland if the concert was off as Auckland was a mess.

At 12:15pm we got notification that the Elton John Concert had been cancelled…

We both have mixed feelings about the cancellation…. Firstly, we obviously really wanted to go, have the VIP experience and just immerse ourselves in the moment.  Secondly, the reality was we were not going to make the VIP tour and if it was cancelled we would at least get our money back… and these tickets were not cheap!

Hire car it is then…

So again I had to message Four Points by Sheraton in Auckland to say that we were definitely needing to cancel our entire stay.  I can not express how grateful I was for them.  They actually held our room the previous night just in case we somehow managed to arrive, at no charge!

Ok, we were now a couple of drinks in but at least it was after noon now LOL

We booked a hire care for a 2pm pick up, rough schedule of our road trip from Christchurch to Auckland set…

What could possibly go wrong???

‘you have to communicate facts’: brown criticises councillors for speaking out.

travel to elton john auckland

Wayne Brown has doubled down on his decision last night to shun the media until close to midnight and only order a state of emergency at 9.30pm.

In a defensive display to the media this afternoon, the Auckland mayor was questioned on comments other councillors made last night, including some who called for a state of emergency to be called earlier.

“One or two of our councillors chose to communicate but there’s no sense communicating things that are just your view, you have to communicate facts and the facts were coming from [CDNZ] and I’m driven by that,” Brown said. “In fact the feedback we got that there was a problem in South Auckland was customers of a business that I own, way before some of the councillors started tossing their… what we need to do is be calm, sensible.

“Some of the stuff that came from some of those people that wanted to communicate stuff that they didn’t know let people think that the declaration [of a local emergency] was needed for work to be done. The other part about it is we have perhaps too many spokespersons for the council. At other councils, I would give those [messages] but if everyone else wants to compete with you, that in itself is confusing.

“If I can be drowned out by other people then they’re not going to hear what I’m saying.”

Three deaths linked to floods; Brown defends emergency response

travel to elton john auckland

Prime minister Chris Hipkins has confirmed there are three deaths linked to the extreme weather event in Auckland over the past 24 hours. There is also at least one person missing.

Speaking at a press conference in Auckland, Hipkins said the priority was to make sure Aucklanders were safe, housed and had access to all emergency services.

“The MetService has confirmed that yesterday was Auckland’s wettest day on record,” said Hipkins. “We want to ensure that Auckland’s infrastructure is back up and running as quickly as possible.”

It’s clear that it’s going to be a big clean up job, the prime minister said. “The loss of life underscores the sheer scale of this weather event and how quickly it turned tragic.” Hipkins reminded Aucklanders to stay out of the floodwater, and away from the beach, saying more rain has been forecast. “It’s safer to be inside than out at the moment,” he said.

Most supermarkets are open in the city – just four have been closed. “Shop normally, there is no need to panic buy,” said Hipkins.

For anyone who night need MSD support, such as for food, bedding or clothes, they can contact 0800 400 100 between 7am and 5pm. Kainga Ora received 103 calls overnight.

travel to elton john auckland

Auckland mayor Wayne Brown acknowledged how difficult last night was for many people and paid tribute to those who had lost their lives. On the emergency response, Brown once again defended the speed with which the state of emergency was declared. “Everybody was out there way before and stayed out all night,” he said.

A review of the communication and coordination of emergency services will be taken. “There are a lot of lessons to be learned,” he said. “We will take our time to do that. But be absolutely sure, we will review everything from this storm.”

Media were quick to – once again – query the speed of the emergency response. Hipkins would not second guess the decisions made, and Brown remained defensive of his decisions.

Asked why no emergency text was sent to Auckland residents, a spokesperson said the event was “beyond anything we had every seen” and the focus was on the safety of people at risk. There was a “crisis within a crisis” due to emergency housing options being compromised by the flood water.

Similar to his late night press conference yesterday, Brown once again reiterated that he followed the “leadership of the professionals” in making the decision to declare a state of emergency. “It’s not something you do lightly. I followed the advice of those who do it regularly.”

Brown was asked why he chose not to “say” anything overnight – by shunning social media and not holding a press conference until close to midnight. Auckland Emergency Management duty controller Andrew Clark chose to answer this despite the question being directed at mayor Brown.

On the communications (or lack thereof) overnight, Hipkins added: “I accept that people will have question…there’ll be an appropriate time to go through those things. At the moment I want [the mayor and emergency management] focused on the response. Undoubtedly, when this is reviewed there’ll be lessons to learn from the experience.”

Brown, continuing to be defensive, said there was no sense communicating things that were “just your view”. This came after a question referencing councillor Jo Bartley, who had called for a state of emergency to be declared earlier. “You have to communicate facts,” Brown said.

‘Heartbreaking decision’: Laneway Festival officially cancelled

travel to elton john auckland

Due to the “unprecedented weather event” in Auckland, organisers have confirmed the “heartbreaking decision” to cancel this year’s Laneway Festival.

“We were so excited to deliver this show to our biggest crowd ever in New Zealand, our team has been working around the clock to do everything they can to salvage the site, but the damage and disruption caused by the weather has meant it is no longer safe to proceed.”

Refunds will be issued soon.

How to clean up after a flood

IMG_1565.jpg

With the rain easing for a moment, many will be beginning the arduous task of cleaning out their flooded property. Auckland council has release advice for cleaning up after a flood.

Cleaning up after a flood

It is important to clean and dry your house and everything in it. Floodwater may contain sewage and other hazardous materials which can contaminate your home.

  • If your gas meter has been affected by water or debris, contact your gas supplier.
  • Always work safely when cleaning up after a flood by wearing protective clothing and washing hands thoroughly after clean-up and before handling food.
  • Keep children and animals away from previously flooded areas until they have been cleaned and made safe.
  • Take photos and videos of the damage and anything that needs to be thrown away before starting the clean-up, for insurance purposes.
  • Clean up, drain, and dry inside as quickly as possible. Take out everything that is wet and that can be moved – floor coverings, furniture, bedding, clothing, etc., and put them outside to dry when the weather is fine.
  • Throw away all food and drinking water that has come in contact with floodwater, including things stored in containers.
  • Do not eat garden produce if the soil has been flooded. Clean up and remove debris and sprinkle gardens with lime (which can be purchased at garden centres).

Air NZ: ‘It might take a few days to get everything back on track’

travel to elton john auckland

Air New Zealand Chief Operational Integrity and Safety Officer Captain David Morgan says the airline’s domestic flights in and out of Auckland resumed from 12pm today as Auckland Airport re-opens.

But he said with a backlog of flights and customers, the priority is those who need to travel urgently. “Those who don’t have urgent travel are being encouraged to make full use of our flexibility policies,” says Morgan.

The international terminal is scheduled to open from 5pm today, but Air New Zealand has advised there is still a lot of work to do to assess whether flying its scheduled departures tonight is possible.

“International flights in and out of Auckland are more complex than domestic, with many parts of the aviation ecosystem needing to be ready as well. This includes airport security, systems to ticket and process customers, and biosecurity and baggage operations.

“The flooding has had a huge impact our Auckland operations. It might take a few days to get everything back on track, and we thank our customers in advance for their patience and understanding during this challenging time.”

An update on the airline’s international flights will be made later today.

No decision on Auckland’s Laneway Festival

travel to elton john auckland

Festival-goers holding on hope for Laneway, set to take place at Western Springs on Monday, will have to wait a bit longer for an official update.

A brief post on Facebook this afternoon stated: “Safety is Laneway Festival’s number one priority. With the large weather event Auckland is currently experiencing, our teams are working closely with local authorities and will provide updates as soon as possible.”

The statement provoked a mixed reaction on social media, with calls for certainty – especially for those travelling from out of town. “Please just cancel it and refund, a lot of people’s flights have already been cancelled,” wrote one punter. Another simply said: “Let’s party in the rain! Fuck it”

A Laneway source earlier told The Spinoff that an assessment was taking place at the sodden venue ahead of a final decision being made.

Meanwhile, Elton John has cancelled both his scheduled Auckland gigs, and the One Love Festival was also scrapped.

‘Will be interesting to see how well prepared Wellington is when the earthquake strikes’ – Wayne Brown

travel to elton john auckland

Wayne Brown has defended the timing of a declaration of a state of emergency last night following record rainfall in Auckland. “The state of emergency is a prescribed process, it’s quite formal, and I had to wait until I had the official request from the emergency management centre. The moment I got it I signed it,” he said in an interview with Kim Hill on RNZ. Responding to criticisms online, he said: “The decisions are guided from the professional experts in the field rather than just from Twitter.”

He was unaware whether any text alerts had been sent to Auckland residents and unable to advise on the safety of drinking water. (For the record, the official advice is “Watercare’s water treatment plants are operating and your water is safe to drink.”)

Asked whether Auckland had been sufficiently prepared for such an emergency, Brown countered with a reference to the capital city.

Hill: “New Zealand’s biggest city … This level of inability to cope is terrifying, isn’t it?”

Brown: “It’s definitely worrying. But this is an unprecedented event. It will be interesting to see just how well prepared Wellington is when the earthquake strikes.”

Hill: “That’s a low blow under the circumstances, Mr Brown.”

Brown: “I’m just suggesting people rise to the occasion. We will be having a review afterwards to see what could have been done better.”

travel to elton john auckland

Emergency management minister Kieran McAnulty told Hill: “What we do know is there are dozens of people in evacuation centres, but I’m pleased it’s dozens not hundreds.” He urged residents to stay at home if possible. He said a series of floods in recent months revealed the impact of climate change, “a reality we have to face up to.”

After the 11th hour cancellation last night, Elton John has cancelled the second concert of his farewell tour at Mt Smart, which had been scheduled for this evening.

In a statement, John said:

“Following the instruction of the emergency services, we have no option but to cancel tonight’s show in Auckland. Two years ago, I was devastated to have to reschedule my final New Zealand shows and was committed to fulfilling my promise of returning to say a final farewell. This is a very difficult decision which doesn’t come lightly and I’m so sorry to all my fans who bought tickets. Cancelling shows is always the very last resort but we have to think of my team, the venue staff and fan safety.

“Vendors will be in touch regarding refunds and in the meantime my thoughts are with everyone in Auckland during this extreme weather. Please stay safe. Much love, Elton.”

Jacinda Ardern posts message to constituents

The member of parliament for Mt Albert, Jacinda Ardern, has posted a message on Facebook following the flooding in Auckland.

“I’m very conscious that it’s been a while since I posted, and there have been a few big things happening. But today the most important thing is everyone’s wellbeing and safety – especially across Auckland after such a severe weather event. So this is a post from the MP for Mt Albert!” she wrote, attaching official advice with a hat-tip to Auckland councillor Richard Hills, who has been up most of the night sharing information on social media ( thread here ). “I’ll be sure to post any updates that come through. Till then, stay safe everyone.”

Given the circumstances Ardern can be forgiven for a Facebook profile that still reads “Prime Minister of New Zealand. Leader of the New Zealand Labour Party.”

Meanwhile Ardern’s successor as prime minister has boarded a flight to Auckland, where he will receive a briefing from emergency services and visit affected parts of the city.

No international arrivals at Auckland Airport today

Flooding of the runway, the check-in and arrivals areas on the ground floor and surrounding roads has disrupted operations at Auckland International, halting all departures until at least 5pm today, with no arrivals before 4:30am tomorrow. “People are asked not to come to the International Terminal at this time for travel and please contact your airline for information about your flight,” said an airport spokesperson.

Domestic operations have been paused until at least noon today. “It’s been a long and challenging night at Auckland Airport, we thank everyone for ongoing patience,” said the spokesperson.

Air New Zealand diverted 12 international flights to other airports overnight. “This will cause significant flow on effects while the airline works through getting customers on those services to their original destinations and our crew and planes back where they need to be. This may take a few days to recover,” said a spokesperson.

Anyone  with non-urgent travel on Air NZ between now and Monday is advised to consider hold their fare in credit or rebooking.

Insurance claims in Auckland already top 1,000

travel to elton john auckland

New Zealand’s largest insurance group, IAG, says it is on track to receive more than 1,100 claims from Aucklanders by lunchtime after the city was deluged in the wettest day on record. Those claims, said the group which includes AMI, State and NZI Insurance, span property damage to homes and businesses and flooded vehicles. “We expect that number to rise as customers are able to assess damage, and people who have been evacuated are able to safely return home,” said spokesperson Wayne Tippet.

He said: “We encourage customers who are safe and out of immediate danger to contact us online or over the phone so we can provide support and lodge claims. We will have our assessors on the ground in affected areas as soon as it is safe to do so. If you are outside of the affected region and have a non-weather related or urgent claim, please hold off from contacting us today.”

What’s happening with Elton John, Laneway, Festival One and One Love? Updated

The rampant flooding in Auckland didn’t just detonate its provincial public holiday weekend – it coincided with the biggest weekend of the year to date for live events. A pair of Elton John concerts at Mt Smart stadium had a combined capacity of over 80,000, while both Laneway at Western Springs and Tauranga’s One Love festival were expecting more than 20,000 apiece, and a large Christian music festival was scheduled to take place outside Hamilton. The storm and scale of disruption is a bitter blow to the events industry, which has endured three years of immense disruptions due to Covid.

The first show, scheduled for Friday, was cancelled after gates were open and less than half an hour before the singer was due on stage. Today’s was cancelled a little after 11.30am, following deliberations through the morning. In a statement, organisers said “weather conditions at the stadium drastically worsened”, leaving promoters “no possible option” but to cancel the second show too.

One Love and Festival One

Organisers announced that One Love, the annual reggae-centric festival, featuring UB40, L.A.B. and Sean Kingston, has been cancelled due to heavy rain.

“One Love family, it pains us to make this announcement. The rough weather last night and this morning has caused chaos, and there is no sign of it easing up over the weekend,” the organisers wrote on Facebook. “From site flooding, to high winds, to artists being stuck in Auckland, thunderstorms predicted and heavy rain tomorrow as well, we are unable to safely and logistically deliver One Love 2023. This, along with the State of Emergency that was declared for Auckland last night has to be taken into account when considering your safety, along with the safety of our artists and crew. A total of 40 per cent of our ticket holders are from Auckland.”

Festival One, a Christian music festival headlined by Switchfoot Karapiro in the Waikato, has also announced that it won’t be going ahead.

Scheduled for Monday, Laneway has a little more leeway than the Saturday events. A festival source who asked not to be named told The Spinoff that “assessments are taking place” at the site in Western Springs. No decision has been made yet, they said, with “punter health and safety the key concern”.

Opera in the Park

Auckland Council/NZ Opera’s Opera in the Park, which was originally scheduled for tonight, has been postponed to March 4.

‘Auckland was clobbered’: latest advice from emergency services after wettest day on record

travel to elton john auckland

Auckland is beginning a clean-up after its wettest day since records began. “Auckland was clobbered on Friday,” said emergency management duty controller Andrew Clark. “We won’t start to get a good idea of numbers affected until later today and, even then, this will take time, with information still coming in and many assessments to complete.”

He said: “We understand Aucklanders will be anxious to return to their homes to survey the damage, but we urge them to do so with caution. Please do not drive through floodwaters and remember hazards and debris could lurk beneath the surface, and floodwaters may be contaminated. If your property has been damaged, please take pictures for your insurance company and contact them as soon as you can.”

Civil Defence Centres are operating in Kelston (St Leonards Road School, 15 Saint Leonards Road), Albany (Massey University Albany Campus, Sir Neil Walters Lecture Theatre) and Randwick Park (Mana Tukutuku, 32 Riverton Drive). Eventfinda Stadium on the North Shore is no longer being used due to flooding.

Water supply and wastewater

Watercare’s water treatment plants are operating and water is safe to drink, say officials. Those in Titirangi, Woodlands Park, Oratia, Greenbay, Waima and elevated sections of Scenic Drive are likely to have no water or low water pressure for at least the next 48 hours.

A 30-metre length of water pipe that ran on Scenic Drive in Titirangi was washed away with the road due to a landslide. “It will be challenging to repair due to the extent of the damage and access to the site. Watercare is sending out water tankers to the area. Customers will be able to fill up their water bottles from the tankers.

Residents on the North Shore are being asked to minimise water use. “Please keep your showers short and do not use your washing machines. This is to reduce the volume of wastewater leaving your properties.”

A wastewater pump station on Wairau Road that serves a number of North Shore suburbs has flooded. “This means the pump station is overflowing into a nearby waterway. The wastewater networks and treatment plants have been overwhelmed by stormwater, causing numerous overflows across Auckland. Watercare is prioritising overflows that are damaging private property. Most of the clean-up activity will need to occur when the rain stops, as this is when the overflows will stop flowing.”

Hipkins flies to Auckland

The prime minister, Chris Hipkins, is travelling to Auckland after devastating floods hit the city overnight. With the airport out of operation until at least midday, he is landing at Whenuapai air base on a New Zealand Defence Force Hercules aircraft from Wellington.

Auckland airport flood: latest flight information, options for Air NZ ticket holders

travel to elton john auckland

As Auckland tackles severe floods and the city’s airport emerges from a deluge on both the runway and in terminals, Air New Zealand has confirmed that no flights will leave or arrive before noon on Saturday at the earliest. In a statement, the airline said anyone booked for a flight between now and Monday would be able to reschedule or request a credit for the fare.

“Information on when flights recommence from Auckland will be provided when there is clarity around the operation of the domestic and international terminals,” is the Air NZ advice. “Customers ticketed to travel between now and Monday 30 January for flights to, through and from Auckland have two options. They can choose to hold the value of their fare in credit for 12 months, from the time they request a credit. Alternatively, those booked to travel on affected flights can transfer their travel to another date or destination up to and including Monday 6 February.”

The Air New Zealand statement echoes advice from the airport that downpours mean no flights will be arriving or departing until noon on Saturday at the earliest. Images shared on social media show the ground floor of the international terminal, where check-in terminals for airlines including Air NZ, Singapore Airlines, Qantas, Emirates, Thai Airways, Jetstar, foot-deep in water.

Elton John performs at Mount Smart Stadium on Sunday in Auckland, New Zealand

Elton John cuts short New Zealand gig after catching pneumonia

Singer ‘deeply upset and sorry’ for cutting short farewell concert in Auckland

Sir Elton John has said he is “deeply upset and sorry” for cutting short a concert in New Zealand after being diagnosed with a mild form of pneumonia.

The musician, 72, was performing at Auckland’s Mount Smart Stadium on Sunday when he lost his voice and broke down in tears on stage.

In footage shared by fans on social media, he is seen crying as he is escorted from the stage while thousands of concertgoers give him a standing ovation.

John posted on Instagram a short while later: “I want to thank everyone who attended tonight’s gig in Auckland. I was diagnosed with walking pneumonia earlier today, but I was determined to give you the best show humanly possible.

“I played and sang my heart out, until my voice could sing no more. I’m disappointed, deeply upset and sorry. I gave it all I had.

“Thank you so much for your extraordinary support and all the love you showed me during tonight’s performance. I am eternally grateful. Love, Elton xx.”

According to one fan on social media, the singer had told the audience earlier in the show: “My voice has completely gone, I’m so sorry.”

He was tended to by a medic for about five minutes earlier in the set and continued to play before he was forced to stop.

The American Lung Association describes walking pneumonia as a “non-medical term for a mild case of pneumonia”. Generally called atypical pneumonia, it can be caused by bacteria or viruses; symptoms, including a cough, fever, chest pain, mild chills and a headache, are similar to that of a bad cold.

Symptoms are usually mild enough for a sufferer to be able to continue their daily activities.

Lesley Warwick, from Auckland, who attended the concert, told PA Media: “I was so sad for Sir Elton – the show was fantastic and he gave it everything he had. Before his first song he forewarned the audience that he had been diagnosed with walking pneumonia earlier in the day but he was going to give it his best shot to get through the show.

“Kiwis are a very understanding and compassionate lot – he was given a standing ovation as he left the stage. Don’t Go Breaking My Heart played and the audience sang the lyrics as he left.”

John was due to perform two more concerts in Auckland on Tuesday and Thursday as part of his last tour, Farewell Yellow Brick Road. His Auckland show came less than a week after he won an Oscar along with his longtime writing partner, Bernie Taupin, for best original song for their Rocketman track (I’m Gonna) Love Me Again.
