Port Elizabeth, called "PE" by the locals, is South Africa's third largest port, with some of the country's cleanest city beaches. With more than 40 kilometers of coastline on the Eastern Cape , lapped by the clear waters of beautiful Algoa Bay, water sports are one of the top things to do, from surfing, sailing, swimming, and fishing to windsurfing, kiteboarding, and scuba diving.

Travelers who prefer to stay dry can hop aboard a harbor cruise with the chance to spot whales such as humpbacks, Southern right whales, and Bryde's whales, depending on the time of year.

But Port Elizabeth is not all about the sea. In the city's historic hub, the art and heritage trail, Route 67, celebrates the fascinating and sometimes turbulent history of this friendly colonial city. And in the surrounding area, private game reserves and the popular Addo Elephant National Park lure wildlife lovers with affordable DIY and guided safaris. Beach in Port Elizabeth

Port Elizabeth boasts some of the tidiest and safest city beaches in South Africa. More than 40 kilometers of sun-splashed sand rims the coast along Algoa Bay. The best picks for a swim are Wells Estate Beach with a paddling pool and water slides; well-shaded Humewood Beach; and popular Kings Beach, with kiosks, restaurants, a skate park, and other entertainment facilities close by. All these beaches earned the coveted international Blue Flag status, awarded for exemplary water quality, safety, and environmental management.

Near the Boardwalk entertainment complex, Hobie Beach offers sheltered rock pools and is well suited for swimming and windsurfing. Pollock Beach is a top surfing spot, and unspoiled Sardinia Bay , in a marine reserve, is great for snorkeling and scuba diving, although fishing is off limits. Avid anglers should head to the northern beaches such as New Brighton Beach and Bluewater Bay .

Addo Elephant National Park

South Africa's third biggest national park, Addo Elephant National Park lies 72 kilometers north of Port Elizabeth and offers nature lovers the taste of a true African safari. The park encompasses more than 444,000 acres, extending from the Karoo, in the north, over the Zuurberg range to the coast. It also includes offshore islands, which shelter important breeding populations of Cape gannets and African penguins.

The park was established in 1931 to preserve the last eleven South African bush elephants from extinction. Today, more than 600 of these majestic beasts roam the park, as well as Cape buffalo, black rhinos, lions, leopards, zebras, spotted hyenas, numerous antelope, and more than 185 species of birds.

Other adventures here include night game drives, horseback riding, and hiking trails. Travelers can choose accommodation options to suit their budget–from cottages and chalets to a camp site, all with access to a restaurant and shop. Day visitors are welcome, and visitors can explore the park in their own car or take a guided tour.

The Boardwalk

In Summerstrand, a 12-minute walk from the beach, The Boardwalk is a slickly packaged leisure resort and convention center on an artificial lake. Tourists and locals will find plenty of things to do here. Browse the boutiques and specialty stores; dine at the restaurants and cafes; and enjoy the entertainment venues, which include a five-screen cinema, an amphitheater hosting live shows, an amusement arcade, bowling alley, and adventure golf. The fitness center features two pools, and if you're seeking a little pampering, you can relax at the full-service spa.

At night, the complex comes alive with a musical fountain show. More than 100 individual jets shoot water up to 60 meters into the air, illuminated by colorful lights, and a screen of water displays multimedia presentations. Adults and children of all ages will find something fun to see and do here, and it's a great alternative to the beach on wet weather days.

Rhinoceros at a drinking hole in the Kragga Kamma Game Park

Less than 30 minutes' drive from Port Elizabeth, Kragga Kamma Game Park welcomes day trippers for self-guided or guided safaris. The park is more affordable than other game-viewing options, with an impressive array of wildlife for its size, including white rhino, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, and monkeys. A favorite are the cheetahs in their own enclosure with a catwalk above for better viewing opportunities. All the other animals roam freely.

This is a great option for those who don't have time for a longer safari at a national park; visitors can easily tour the park in two to three hours. Tracks through the park are fine for two-wheel-drive cars, but the park also offers guided tours in open Land Rovers.

About a 10-minute drive from Kragga Kamma Game Park, Holmeleigh Farmyard is another critter-filled family attraction. Pricier and more luxurious safari experiences with a range of plush accommodations are available at Kwantu Private Game Reserve, about 85 kilometers from Port Elizabeth, and Shamwari Game Reserve, 75 kilometers south of town.

Art at the Donkin Reserve along Route 67

Route 67 in the city's historical hub is an art and heritage trail spotlighting 67 artworks created by Eastern Cape artists–one for every year Mandela devoted to public life. The trail weaves together the city's British heritage and African history and tells the story of the lead-up to the 1994 elections.

To follow the trail downhill, begin at the Donkin Reserve at the lighthouse. From here, visitors can stroll at their leisure to admire colorful mosaics, murals, sculptures, and engraved poetry. Along the way are several historical sites and art galleries. Notice the 67 steps leading up to the second largest flag in Africa. Also, look for the metal cut out of Nelson Mandela, fist pumping, as he leads a line of South African voters to the first democratic elections in 1994.

The trail ends at the Campanile , a 52-meter-high tower with a carillon of 23 bells erected in 1923 in honor of the first settlers.

The Donkin Reserve

In the city's historic hub, the Donkin Reserve is a small park established in 1820 by Sir Rufane Donkin, Port Elizabeth's founder. A highlight of the park is the poignant pyramid-shaped memorial to Sir Donkin's wife, Elizabeth, inscribed with the words: "To the memory of one of the most perfect of human beings who has given her name to the town below."

The nearby lighthouse, dating from 1861, houses the tourism office. Here, visitors can pick up a map for the five-kilometer-long Donkin Heritage Trail , which spans 47 historical sites from City Hall to St. George's Park including the Campanile , built in memory of the settlers who arrived here in 1820 and offering a panoramic view over the city.

From the Campanile, a street under the freeway leads to Market Square , the city's historic center. Before walking the trail, leave valuables behind and check with locals, as some areas can be dangerous. The Donkin Reserve is also the start of Route 67 , the city's popular art and heritage trail.

Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds

In the Cape Recife Nature Reserve , the Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds welcomes visitors to see its rescued marine life and learn about these fascinating creatures. The center focuses on marine birds, in particular African penguins that hail from nearby St. Croix island, home to the largest breeding colony of African penguins in the world.

Many of the staff are knowledgeable volunteers who share their passion for their work on informative tours through the bird hospital and educate visitors about the center's rehabilitation efforts and the dangers facing these creatures in the wild. One of the best times to visit is during feeding time, around 2:30pm, when visitors can pull up a seat in the coffee shop and watch these charismatic creatures gobbling their meals and cavorting around the pool.

Cape Recife Nature Reserve

Covering 366 hectares, Cape Recife Nature Reserve, a few kilometers from Port Elizabeth, offers great hiking and beachcombing along a slice of unspoiled coast. Visitors can escape the crowds found at the city beaches here, and a nine-kilometer hiking trail curves through the park with beautiful views of the rocky coastline, dunes, an 1851 lighthouse, and pristine beaches with tidal pools.

Wildlife lovers can also stop by the Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds within the reserve. Better still, try timing a visit to coincide with the release of rescued penguins off the beach.

Van Stadens Wildflower Reserve

About 40 kilometers west of Port Elizabeth, Van Stadens Nature Reserve is the perfect place for a hike and a picnic. The well-maintained paths are easy to follow, and the walks vary in difficulty, from gentle paths through old-growth native trees to more challenging hikes through thick forests and along rushing streams. Those who walk to the Van Stadens bridge will be rewarded with beautiful views over the steep ravine and fantastic opportunities for photography.

At reception, a flower house displays a startling array of blooms, including many species of proteas. Wear comfortable hiking shoes and pack a picnic.

On Port Elizabeth's beachfront, South End Museum traces the history of the forced removal of the former residents of this area during the apartheid era. Photos, newspaper clippings, and recreations of living spaces bring to life the personal stories of the time and focus not only on the personal tragedies, but the triumphs as well. Although the displays are simple, the museum documents an important piece of the city's history. Entry is free, however visitors are encouraged to leave a donation.

Gemsbok at the Shamwari Private Game Reserve

Shamwari Private Game Reserve is one of the top private game reserves in South Africa and is well-known for its conservation efforts. Located just 75-kilometers from Port Elizabeth, it is well worth booking a few nights accommodation here. The Shamwari Private Game Reserve Lodges are beautiful, the food excellent, and the wildlife viewing can be phenomenal.

Shamwari also runs a number of animal conservation programs, including the Born Free Big Cat Sanctuaries . These facilities are educational and also serve as home to rescued big cats from around the world. Day visitors to the cat sanctuary are allowed on a limited basis, but you must contact the reserve first to enquire. Don't just show up.

Storms River Bridge

Storms River Bridge, also known as Paul Sauer Bridge, is on the eastern end of the famous Garden Route , and the area around it is an eco-destination. The bridge itself, known as a deck arch bridge, is a work of art for engineering geeks, and building it was a big deal in 1953. In fact, at a height of 36 meters above Storms River, this suspension bridge was the highest concrete arch bridge in South Africa until 1984 when nearby Bloukrans River Bridge was built.

You can walk across the bridge, which serves as a gateway to Tsitsikamma National Park . Pause to take in the stunning views of the rocky gorge below. Also in the Storms River area is bungee jumping off the even higher Bloukrans River Bridge, located 20 kilometers to the west along the N2, as well as canopy tours.

South African Air Force Museum

Port Elizabeth is home to a branch of the South African Air Force Museum (the main museum is in Pretoria). Located on the southern side of the airport, it has nine aircraft on display. These include a supersonic jet fighter, two Harvard trainers, a helicopter, and the oldest surviving fighter jet in South Africa. The museum is a fun distraction for kids or anyone arriving at the airport a little early.

Besides the aircraft, the museum includes aircraft memorabilia, model planes, and photos in the main exhibition hall. In a WWII hanger, more planes are being restored. There is also a working flight simulator that can be booked with advance notification.

Located about 25 kilometers outside Port Elizabeth, the Island Nature Reserve is another beautiful natural attraction. It is most famous for its Bushback hiking trail. Traversing 16 kilometers, it starts just outside the Nature Reserve's main office. The reserve consists of varied ecosystems, including a 480-hectare indigenous Alexandria coastal forest and sandy dunes.

Besides the Bushback Trail, there are a number of shorter walking trails that are suitable for kids. Along the trails, you'll often spot some smaller animals, including vervet monkeys, small antelope, and even caracals. The park is also home to about 120 bird species.

Luxury Hotels:

  • For a historic, boutique sleep try Hacklewood Hill Country House . In a house dating back to 1898 in the suburb of Walmer , Hacklewood has an old-fashioned, Victorian English style, with stained-glass doors and polished wood floors. Breakfast is included and there is an outdoor swimming pool.
  • No5 by Mantis is another luxury choice in the S ummerstrand suburb and is very close to the beach. This five-star boutique property has just 10 posh suites done up in contemporary South African style, and the hotel has an impressive art collection on display throughout. Amenities include a restaurant and spa.
  • The Boardwalk Hotel is also in the Summerstrand suburb. This beachfront resort has 140 rooms and suites all with Indian Ocean views. The trendy property also has plenty of on-site shopping and dining and is part of the larger Boardwalk entertainment complex mentioned earlier.

Mid-Range Hotels :

  • Sir Roys At The Sea is an excellent value choice near the beach in the Walmer suburb and also near the airport. The guesthouse features awesome views of the sea and Nelson Mandela Bay, and bright and spacious rooms and suites. There is also a swimming pool, and breakfast is included in the rate.
  • Another mid-range choice, Paxton Hotel is a four-star hotel overlooking the bay. It features bright and contemporary rooms. On-site amenities include a restaurant and an outdoor swimming pool with sun loungers.
  • Garden Court Kings Beach is also popular, especially with families. This good-value hotel is right on Kings Beach in Port Elizabeth. Rooms are clean and comfortable, and the hotel can help set up excursions to the sightseeing attractions listed above.

Budget Hotels:

  • South Africa is such good value that many mid-range hotels would rank as budget in another country. Still, if you want to spend less, try the SUN1 Port Elizabeth . In a central location, it offers tiny but clean and trendily decorated rooms–think striped bedspreads and streamlined wood furnishings.
  • Another similar option is the Road Lodge Port Elizabeth , which is also basic but comfortable. The rooms are more generic in decor than Sun1, however.

15 Best things to do in Port Elizabeth

Here I use the knowledge I’ve gained over multiple trips to South Africa to highlight the very best things to do in Port Elizabeth. With the experienced eye of a travel writer specializing on the world’s oldest continent, you can be sure my picks are first-hand recommendations of attractions that wowed me.

Although now officially known as Gqeberha, most still know this Indian Ocean city as Port Elizabeth, or PE. It’s location on the broad Algoa Bay makes it an alternative choice to Durban for beach escapes. But there’s also plenty of culture and history to be had for those taking the time to get to know this noble lady of Eastern Cape Province, as we will see.

1. Donkin Reserve

Donkin Reserve

Smack bang in the middle of Port Elizabeth’s Central Business District (CBD), the Donkin Reserve is a publicly-accessible open space combining native flora, historic structures, and fine views over the wider city.

Its lighthouse, dating to 1861, can usually be visited to enhance the views from Donkin’s Reserve further. Next to it is a 10 meter high stone pyramid dedicated to Elizabeth Markham. The wife of then governor Rufane Shaw Donkin, it’s from her the city got its name.

Bringing the Donkin Reserve into the modern era are brightly colored mosaics in part depicting the Portuguese ships which first rounded this part of the South African coast, and metal cutouts of Nelson Mandela, fist raised in celebration.

2. King’s Beach

King’s Beach, Port Elizabeth

Proudly flying a Blue Flag for cleanliness, King’s Beach is one of Port Elizabeth’s most popular stretches of sand. Its runs for 1.6 glorious kilometers from the harbor to Humewood, a beachside neighborhood with its own long history.

A good all-round beach, its sand is fine enough to ensure sand castles hold first, while warm Indian ocean waters lure visitors in to swim, bodyboard, and surf. Watched over the lifeguards, there’s also a nursery pool for toddlers, mini-golf, changing facilities, and refreshments. In fact, King’s Beach has all you need to spend a day soaking up Port Elizabeth’s sunny weather. Average daily temperatures don’t drop below 19°C at any time of year.

3. Route 67 walking trail

Route 67 walking trail

The city’s Route 67 trail consists of a piece of public art for each of the 67 years Nelson Mandela gave his life to ending racial segregation in South Africa under apartheid.

Starting at the Campanile, the city’s easy to spot clock and bell tower, it passes through Vuyisile Mini Market Square. Continuing onto St Mary’s Terrace and Donkin Reserve, it also takes it what’s reported to be the largest flag on the continent. Each of the artworks come with an information board to provide the wider context.

4. Splash Waterworld

Lazy River

The slides and rides behind King’s Beach belong to Splash Waterworld. Primarily aimed at children, this small waterpark nonetheless does its job of bringing smiles to the faces of those who visit. So prepare for a wet and wild time on attractions including the Super Tube, Lazy River, and Speed Slide, alongside a Kiddies Slide for younger patrons.

As you might expect, there are plenty of kiosks offering up drinks and snacks. More unusually, it’s also possible to take to the slides of Splash Waterworld after dark thanks to floodlights.

5. Fort Frederick

Fort Frederick

Fort Frederick was constructed in 1799 to avoid a French invasion of this part of Britain’s Cape Colony. Although this may sound like a baffling idea today, at the height of the Napoleonic Wars between the two countries, nothing seems to have been off the table.

Never having fired a shot from any of its guns, the two-story complex is square in form and sits on one bank of the Baakens River, overlooking the modern harbor. Said to be haunted by the ghosts of a Shakespeare play, behind its walls you’ll find a blockhouse, powder magazine, and small museum.

6. Addo Elephant National Park

Addo Elephant National Park

Roughly 100 kilometers (1.5 hours) north of Port Elizabeth, Addo Elephant National Park makes for an easy day trip from the city. One of South Africa’s largest national parks, there’s no secret to what the big-ticket attractions are here.

There are around 600 elephants within the park, alongside several hundred buffalo, a pride of reintroduced lions, hyenas, Burchell’s zebra, kudu, eland, and bushbuck. Game drives are therefore the favorite past time, with 120 kilometers of track to choose between. Its lions and hyenas are most commonly spotted in the early morning or late evening.

My suggestion is to visit on a hotter day, which brings much of the action down to the waterhole.

7. Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Art Museum

Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Art Museum

Located within the grounds of Saint George’s Park, this gallery specializes in the art of South Africa’s Eastern Cape. Containing three main rooms, its artworks are regularly rehung to allow as much of its comprehensive collection to be seen as possible.

These works are enhanced by temporary exhibitions spanning from sculpture to quilting. In addition to artworks by colonial artists such as Thomas Baines and Frederick Timpson I’Ons, there’s a fascinating collection of beadworks by the Southern Nguni people, and a smattering of contemporary pieces too.

8. Bayworld

Bayworld, Port Elizabeth

Opened in time for the new millennium, Bayworld is part natural history museum, part oceanarium, and part vivarium. Its museum exhibits are thoroughly modern, with plenty of interest for all ages.

Meanwhile, its outside areas include a dinosaur exhibit and oceanarium with live animal exhibits incorporating rescued turtles, seals, and penguins. Last but certainly not least, Bayworld has South Africa’s oldest snake park. Here visitors can get the lowdown on a myriad of local snakes, as well as crocs and tortoises.

9. Cape Recife Lighthouse

Cape Recife Lighthouse

Cape Recife is the name given to Port Elizabeth’s southeasternmost point. The obvious location for an aid to navigation, its lighthouse was established in 1849 to guide ships around Thunderbolt reef, named after a British frigate which wasn’t so lucky.

Rising 24 meters and banded with black and white stripes, Cape Recife Lighthouse sits within a nature reserve offering hiking opportunities for all levels of fitness. Paths cut through the semi-tropical vegetation and over rocky outcrops to rockpools home to an impressive number of marine creatures.

10. Horse Memorial

Horse Memorial

Back in the center of Port Elizabeth lies its Horse Memorial. In approximate life size, it depicts a British solider kneeling in front of a horse and offering it a bucket of water. Designed by English sculpture Joseph Whitehead, it was unveiled in 1905 to honor the estimated 300,000 horses brought to South Africa during the Anglo Boer wars of 1899-1902. Most were brought to shore at Port Elizabeth.

Paid for by the public, it cost £800, equivalent to around £120,000 ($150,000) in today’s money, and was shipped all the way from London where the bronze was cast.

11. Amakhala Game Reserve

Amakhala Game Reserve

A private game reserve approximately 1.5 hours from Port Elizabeth by road, Amakhala has an area of 18,000 acres. Joining morning or evening game drives to explore them, visitors to Amakhala have a good chance of encountering all the Big Five species – lions, leopards, elephants, rhinos, and Cape buffalo.

Amakhala ranges from bushveld to savanna, with areas covering five of South Africa’s seven biomes. This means other species to look out for on day trips from Port Elizabeth include giraffe, cheetah, zebra, wildebeest, antelope, and monkeys.

12. South End Museum

South End Museum

This museum is one of just a few attractions in Port Elizabeth which directly tackle the apartheid period. The South End neighborhood had been a multiracial one known for its cosmopolitan atmosphere, good schools, and host of successful local businesses.

But that all ended when its non-white tenants were forcibly relocated, an event which took place between 1965 and 1975. Its this history which South End Museum seeks to share. It does this through its blend of displays, historic photographs, and a walk-on map of the area.

13. The Campanile

The Campanile

This stand-alone clock and bell tower has a passing resemblance to its more famous cousin in Saint Mark’s Square, Venice, Italy. Built for the most part from red brick, it rises to a height of 50 meters.

Constructed to mark one hundred years since the first settlers arrived into what became Port Elizabeth, workmen remained on the site between 1920 and 1922. Their efforts included completing the 204 steps which reach up to the observation room at the Campanile’s top. That said, there’s now an elevator too, providing easier access to the 23 bells which make up one of the largest carillons (bells played like a piano) in South Africa.

14. Whale watching

Whale watching, Algoa Bay

Port Elizabeth’s coastal waters aren’t only of interest to beach goers. They’re also a draw to whales to such an extent that Algoa Bay has been declared the World Cetacean Alliance’s fifth Whale Heritage Site.

Joining a licensed whale watching tour from Port Elizabeth gives the opportunity to watch the antics of southern right and humpback whales. Both are known for breaching the water. Other whale species which can be encountered are minke and Bryde’s whales. Known as the ‘bottlenose dolphin capital of the world,’ taking to the waters of Algoa Bay promises plenty of action from these intelligent creatures as an added bonus.

15. South African Air Force Museum

South African Air Force Museum

One of Port Elizabeth’s smaller museum spaces, the South African Air Force Museum is located within the perimeter of the city’s airport. Its collection currently contains nine aircraft, including South Africa’s oldest jet, a supersonic fighter, and two helicopters.

Access to a restored World War Two era hangar allows visitors to see restoration work as it happens, while the walls of the main museum are packed with cabinets and imagery linked to the force, founded in 1920. However, the highlight has to be the onsite flight simulator.

Top Things to See and Do in Port Elizabeth

2BC67F7 Boat at Diani Beach - Galu Beach - Kenya, Africa

If you’re considering a beach break combined with a bit of culture, some retail therapy and great food, then look no further than Port Elizabeth. This friendly city really does pull out all the stops when it comes to keeping its visitors entertained, chilled and loving life. With no reason to rush and endless days of sunshine, here are 11 great reasons to come and play in Port Elizabeth .

Shop for souvenirs.

Don’t miss the opportunity to pick up a bargain in the Bay, as souvenir merchants are easy to find along the beachfront and offer all sorts of goodies to slip into your suitcase. Wooden carvings of African animals, beaded necklaces and a variety of other uniquely South African curios can all be purchased at less-than-average tourist prices, but be sure to have some local currency in cash handy. Informal sellers are usually willing to barter so don’t always accept the first price they offer.

St Croix Island Marine Reserve

The small, rocky island of St Croix is an important marine reserve as it is home to the largest breeding colony of African penguins in the world. These distinct black-and-white birds are only found along the southwestern coast of Africa and, with rapidly dwindling numbers, are listed as an endangered species. A boat charter is needed to get to the island, while the surrounding waters are rich in marine life and a popular scuba diving site.

Blue Flag beaches

Blue Flag status is a global accolade awarded to beaches that meet strict environmental, water quality and security criteria, and the good news is that Port Elizabeth currently has three. Kings Beach, Hobie Beach and Humewood Beach all hold this prestigious honour, as well as clean, sandy shores where visitors can stretch out and work on their tan. The Indian Ocean is usually warm enough for a dip, so swim, surf, boogie board or kite surf the day away while the sounds of the city hover faintly in the background.

Bayworld Oceanarium

Scorpion fish

Natural and cultural history merge easily with slithery reptiles and underwater marine wonders at Bayworld, where you can eyeball a shark through the safety of a glass window in the oceanarium before heading off for a close encounter with one of the Eastern Cape’s indigenous snake species. Adjacent to Bayworld is the Port Elizabeth Museum, the third-oldest in South Africa, with exhibitions ranging from dinosaurs to maritime history and Xhosa bead work. Seal and penguin presentations, as well as snake interaction sessions, occur daily at set times.

St George’s Park

So much more than just a park, this green and leafy recreational and sports facility is the sixth-oldest cricket ground in the world, housing a cricket stadium, swimming pool, walking paths to meander along and a good scattering of hungry ducks. It also includes the elegant Victorian Pearson Conservatory that was built in 1882 for the cultivation of exotic plants, and Prince Alfred’s Guard Memorial. Take a picnic and grab a spot on the grass while the kids work off energy in the playground, or catch an action-packed cricket match.

Sardinia Bay

Affectionately known as ‘Sards’ by locals, this pristine stretch of beach requires a bit of legwork to get to but, once you are there, you will understand why the walk was worthwhile. Peaceful and often deserted, Sardinia Bay forms part of a marine reserve, with waters frequented by scuba divers and long stretches of sandy coastline favoured by horse riders, dog walkers and kite surfers. Ideal for romantic, early morning strolls or cuddles on the sand dunes come sunset, this is one spot to share with your honey.

South African Marine Rehabilitation and Education Centre

The SAMREC is located within the wild and beautiful Cape Recife Conservancy with the aim of rescuing injured marine life before releasing it back into the wild. The most common patients at the centre are African penguins, an endangered species, and visitors can watch as volunteers care for and clean the birds. SAMREC is open throughout the day, but those wanting an extra special treat should aim to be there at 2:30pm when the eternally hungry penguins get fed.

Valley Market

The vibey Valley Market gives foodies a reason to get excited, as it dishes up platefuls of artisanal food and drink options on the first Saturday of every month. It is housed in an old industrial tramway building that comes to life with enticing aromas and colourful dishes, tempting visitors to eat their way through until their heart’s content. The wide variety of food on offer is an appealing alternative to traditional restaurants, so grab some dim sum, a gourmet burger, or spicy seafood paella and end it off with home-made gelato.

The Boardwalk Casino and Entertainment Complex

This one-stop entertainment destination is one of Port Elizabeth’s most popular playgrounds and a great place to have some fun. The flagship casino offers gambling galore and there is an excellent selection of restaurants that serve everything from breakfast smoothies through to dinner and late-night cocktails. Retail outlets, an African market, movie houses and entertainment for kids complete the scene, while the central lake lights up at night in waterfalls of shimmering colour, when the musical fountain puts on its show.

The Donkin Heritage Trail

Trace the path of the 1820 British Settlers on the Donkin Heritage Trail . For those who don’t know, the settlers of 1820 were the first British colonists to arrive in the Cape and were instrumental in establishing much of what still stands in Port Elizabeth today. The five-kilometre (thee-mile) Donkin trail links 47 national monuments and historical sites that date back to the early days of Port Elizabeth and is well sign posted with information boards, making it easy to navigate and enjoy.

Take a walk

The wooden walkway along Port Elizabeth’s shoreline is well kept and perfect for a serene outdoor walk without all the huffing and puffing. Stroll past Hobie Beach and Shark Rock Pier while surfers catch waves and the sun sparkles off the ocean. Once you get to the lollipop beacon, the scenery changes to a wilder but equally breath-taking landscape. Look out for bottlenose dolphins in the morning, when these playful mammals enjoy riding the waves and leaping through the surf.

Learn About Local History at the Port Elizabeth Museum

Located on the Humewood beachfront, the Port Elizabeth Museum explores the city’s cultural and natural history through a series of fascinating permanent exhibits. These range from the Maritime History Hall to the Xhosa Beadwork Gallery, and tell the story of Algoa Bay from the days of the indigenous San people to the arrival of the colonial settlers. Some of the exhibits (specifically, a life-sized reconstruction of a local dinosaur species called Algoasaurus) even date back to prehistoric times. Other highlights include a bronze cannon from a Portuguese galleon that wrecked off the coast in the 17th century; and the skeleton of one of the last Southern right whales to be killed by Algoa Bay whalers.

Walk the Donkin Heritage Trail

The Donkin Heritage Trail is named after Sir Rufane Donkin, Port Elizabeth’s founder. It connects 51 historical sites, which together tell the story of the 1820 settlers and the British colonial era. The self-guided tour starts outside the Public Library with its statue of Queen Victoria and includes a host of Victorian houses, churches, and memorials. Amongst these is the Campanile (which marks the landing site of the 1820 Settlers and affords spectacular panoramas of the city and harbor) and the stone pyramid at Donkin Reserve. The latter was erected in honor of Sir Donkin’s wife, Elizabeth, for whom the city was named. Maps for the 5-kilometer trail are sold at the Donkin Reserve Information Office.

A popular and significant destination for water sports, Port Elizabeth also offers many historical attractions, such as the Historic Donkin Heritage trail, taking visitors along the footsteps of the 1820 settlers. British heritage is reflected in the Port Elizabeth Cricket Club, and the oldest bowling green in South Africa. Port Elizabeth’s greatest treasures, however, are malaria-free wildlife areas in its vicinity, and clean beaches washed by warm water.

Port Elizabeth was founded by British settlers in 1820 and was named after the wife of Rufane Donkin, Acting Governor of the Cape Colony at that time. The city sits on shore of the Algoa Bay and with the neighbouring towns of Kariega/Uitenhage and Despatch , it forms the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Municipality. The Algoa Bay is reputed as the Bottlenose dolphin world capital, as pods of thousands of dolphins can be spotted at any given time in this bay. This is also a year-round whale watching destination.

The tourist information centres are in the Donkin Reserve in the town centre, at the Boardwalk (Marine Drive) and at the Airport Arrivals hall. These information centres are managed by the local tourism organisation, Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism , which also offers tourism passes that you can purchase online or at their tourism information centres. These tour passes give you access to free and discounted activities around Nelson Mandela Bay.

Port Elizabeth was renamed Gqeberha on 21 February 2021, a change that is opposed by many of its residents. Gqeberha is pronounced with a tongue click, i.e., "Click bear gha."

By taxi [ edit ]

The main form of transportation for most people is the (minibus) taxi . Toyota Hiaces or VW Caravelles or the like, modified to cram in as many seats as possible, will take you across town for approximately R10 (as of May 2020). Some of them are still more a road hazard than anything, but a clean-up in the taxi industry means that their standards are improving.

Each taxi operates on a laid-out route. They are more frequent during daytime than at night.

Getting on. Stand on the curve of a trafficked road. When a taxi approaches, it may flash its headlights to 'ask' if you want to go. Just stick your hand out.

Getting off. You might be able to tell the 'bouncer' ( kondi) your desired destination when you pay, but in any case just tell the driver "next stop" , in a clear, firm voice, if you can make yourself heard above the music pounding from the sound system.

Top 10 things to do in port elizabeth.

Consider taking a trip to Port Elizabeth, there’s more there than you might think …

I was invited to Port Elizabeth  by  Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism to check out what life is like in the slow lane. Well, they didn’t exactly say slow lane, but I had heard that life in P.E. is incredibly chilled, even by Cape Town standards. To my surprise, I spent an action-packed couple of days there filled with a host of things to do and places to see, all supplemented by a rich undercurrent of history.

It’s easy to see why Port Elizabeth is called The Friendly City . The city exudes a relaxed atmosphere and out-of-your-way hospitality. It must be all those hours of sunshine (apparently they get more hours of sunshine than any other South African city). So, for the historian, the bush-lover, the sports fanatic and even the adrenaline junkie, here are 10 things not to miss.

port elizabeth tourist attractions

Explore the Donkin Heritage Trail

If you want to get to know  Port Elizabeth on a personal level, take on the five-kilometre trail that follows in the footsteps of the 1820 Settlers. It links no less than 47 national monuments and historical sites in central Port Elizabeth and is named after the acting governor of the Cape Colony at the time, Sir Rufane Donkin. Whether you like historical tours or not, this trail includes some fascinating facts about the area that will enlighten you about the city. Points of interest along the trail are signposted with information boards, making the trail very easy to self-navigate and a pretty neat way to get you walking around town.

See the ellies at Addo Elephant Park

Escape to the bush and spend hours scouring the pristine Eastern Cape landscape for wildlife at Addo Elephant Park, home to over 550 elephant. It is the third largest national park in South Africa and has expanded to conserve a wide range of wildlife and flora from the semi-desert Karoo down to the coastline of Sunday’s River Valley Mouth.

Chill out on a Sunday’s River Cruise

Cruising along the Sunday’s River on a ferry is a perfect way to take in the scenery along the marine section of the Addo Elephant National Park without lifting a finger … except of course to snap a picture or two. Head up to the upper viewing deck and take in the view out towards the city and Algoa Bay . Twitchers, look out for the myriad birdlife along the river banks. The 2.5 hour, 20-kilometre cruise offers both self-catering and catered trips and the captain, Les, is a bundle of fun.

Conquer the Maitland Sand Dunes

If you’re looking for a dash of adrenaline then try your hand (foot?) at sandboarding at Maitland Sand Dunes . The dunes are easily accessible and provide hours of fun. It’s a challenging trek up to the top, but the views and scenery are worth every breath. The way down, of course, is the best part. Anything that you can slide on will do – trays, pieces of cardboard or the obvious choice, sandboards. There are also three hiking trails ( check out Port Elizabeth’s top six day walks ) that wind their way into the forests of  Maitland Nature Reserve . The Sir Peregrine Maitland Nature Trail is a three-kilometre trail which follows an old wagon road, while the Igolomi Trial will take you on a four-kilometre stretch through Maitland’s dense forest. The more exuberant can try out the nine-kilometre De Stades Nature Trail which rewards hikers with a unique view of St Francis Bay .

Live the local life on a township tour

Take a drive into the townships of Port Elizabeth, mingle with the locals and step into a culture that many tourists may not have experienced before. Taste home-brewed beers at a shebeen, eat a traditional Xhosa meal and visit the  Red Location Apartheid Museum . It is an eye-opening experience and a chance to experience authentic Xhosa hospitality.

Pop in at Kragga Kamma Game Reserve

Take a short drive through the Kragga Kamma Game Reserve, located just outside the city centre. It’s a small reserve that’s home to free-roaming buffalo, giraffe, zebra, nyala and bontebok, amongst others. The short loop through the park guarantees wildlife sightings. Visitors can choose to drive in their own vehicle or take a two-hour guided drive. The park is also home to a family of cheetah which have been hand-reared by dedicated volunteers. Stop off at the Bush Cafe for a bite and take a sky walk over the monkey bridge through the lush forest section at Kragga, which is home to monkeys and a wealth of bird species.

Feel the heat at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium

Built specifically for the 2010 Fifa World Cup, the impressive Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium ( read more about Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium ) now plays host to a variety of sporting events including rugby’s biggest party, the IRB Sevens Rugby World Series . If you’re there on a weekend, catch the E.P. Kings in a local rugby match up. Alternatively, take a 30 minute stadium tour on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays between 13h00 and 16h00.

Light it up at the Cape Recife Lighthouse

The Cape Recife Lighthouse is one of South Africa’s most iconic lighthouses, with a deep history to boot. It’s situated on the south entrance to Algoa Bay on the treacherous Thunderbolt Reef, approximately 15 kilometres from Port Elizabeth. The unmistakable black and white banded tower stands near the site where, in 1902, numerous sailors and rescuers lost their lives to a hurricane that wrecked both moored and sea-faring vessels. Ironically, the monolith that now steers vessels clear of this dangerous reef was erected on April Fools’ Day in 1851.

Chat up the birds at SAMREC

The South African Marine Rehabilitation and Education Centre ( SAMREC ) is located near the Cape Recife Lighthouse and is the temporary home to many sick or injured African penguins and other sea birds, most as a result of human influence. The non-profit organisation is open from 09h30 until 17h00 every day and the volunteers that dedicate their days to the rehabilition of these birds are super friendly (of course) and more than willing to show visitors around the centre and introduce them to its special inhabitants. The best time to visit is at 14h30, when you can watch the staff feed the birds while grabbing a bite for yourself at the Flying Penguin (another smart irony) coffee shop.

Bask on a Blue Flag beach

Of the six Blue Flag beaches located in the Eastern Cape two are situated in Port Elizabeth. Humewood Beach and Wells Estate Beach have both passed the 14-point criteria and been awarded Blue Flag status. Visitors can enjoy a stretch of coast that has impeccable water quality, visible environmental information and safety services, including excellent life-saving standards, ample parking and sparkling ablution facilities. So take advantage of the Port Elizabeth sunshine, head to the beach and catch that long lost tan that winter has robbed you of.

10 Great Things to do in Port Elizabeth

Regarded as both the friendly and windy city, depending on who you’re talking to and when, Port Elizabeth is deemed a great place in which to holiday, its people genial, its beaches enviable and its weather gorgeous almost the whole year round – winter beach moments can easily surpass scorching summer sizzlers.

And despite the jibes about copious amounts of ‘industrial scenery’, the warm waters of the Indian Ocean are enough of an attraction for the average Capetonian to turn a blind eye to the factory-scattered skyline.

There is a list a mile long of great things to do when in Port Elizabeth , but here are 10 we think you’ll enjoy, some of them indisputable, others a little less obvious …

Visit the Addo Elephant National Park

Visit the Addo Elephant National Park

You cannot visit Port Elizabeth without a drive out to the Addo Elephant Park to see the elephants. The trip will take you only an hour and the visit will transport you straight into the heart of the bush, with the promise of seeing elephants.

The main watering hole is so strategically placed that you are almost guaranteed of a bird’s eye view for watching groups of the almost 500 elephants that call Addo home. Seeing them socialise, drink, eat and walk in their strong, slow fashion is a treat for anyone.

If you want to get there faster, the southern gate is only 30 minutes from the city, but the main gate has a great watering hole, so it is worth the effort. Addo is the third largest national park in the country and claims to be the first Big 7 game reserve in the world (it includes the Southern Right whale and Great White shark in this list as the park extends to the coast with its marine coastal reserve).

10 Great Things to do in Port Elizabeth

Visit the Blue Flag beaches

South Africa boasts a total of twenty seven beaches awarded with international Blue Flag status, which means that they’re clean, environmentally sound and safe. Seven of these lie in the Eastern Cape , and two of them in Port Elizabeth.

Humewood beach in particular is a firm favourite with visitors, even if it lies on the outskirts of the main city area. It is the oldest Blue Flag beach in South Africa, the old slipway a very safe space in which to learn to snorkel or scuba dive – there are fantastic reefs just 100 metres beyond the end pillars, where in the 1930s boats were repaired by sailing inbetween the pillars, after which they were pulled up the slipway with a steam pulley.

The other Blue Flag beach in Port Elizabeth is Wells Estate, a little north of the city.

Visit the rugged coastline – Maitland sand dune

This is a great one for families. The giant sand dune at Maitlands gets everyone energised with its steep trek up to the ridge of the dune, but the stupendous views from up here are worth it – promise. And then there is the way down again – body boards, pieces of cardboard, and of course, sandboards – anything will do, really, for the joy of sliding your way to the bottom. Exhilaration at its best.

Things to do in Port Elizabeth

Walk the Donkin Heritage Trail

Any local visitor’s manual to Port Elizabeth will describe the 5 kilometre Donkin Heritage trail that links 47 historical sites of the 1820 settlers.

The popular trail is a self-walk route around the city centre and market square, but part of the trail is through the original Donkin houses and the Donkin Reserve (the houses run along the side of the reserve). But what the tourist brochures won’t tell you is that what has to be the biggest South African flag flies in the reserve. It stands 12 metres high and the flag is, well, big – you must be able to see it for miles around.

Visit the Red Location Museum

This is another historical must when in Port Elizabeth. The hall of columns alone, which is also the main lobby of the museum, is worth the visit. Fifteen columns, each dedicated to a local hero of the struggle, change every year via a nomination process by the local community. The solid, beautifully hewn hall with its granite columns and steps, one side a window to  the sky is quite breathtaking.

The Nelson Mandela Room contains his biography in both documentation and photos, including letters he wrote whilst on Robben Island . Not all of it is easy on the eye or the psyche. The hanging of Vuyislie Mini, who was hanged in 1964, is a larger-than-life photo of him infront of which swing three nooses (he was hanged along with two others), and a series of boxes that stand covering ceiling to floor, hold the names of those killed by the government for their part in anti-apartheid activities.

It’s a sobering, but necessary visit. The museum is in Red Location, today a mix of the old tin shacks where black residents of Strangers Location and Coopers Kloof were moved in 1903.

Port Elizabeth City Hall

Grab a meal in Parliament Street

There’s a real vibe to Parliament Street, the fairly recently upgraded part of Uptown Port Elizabeth. With a series of coffee shops, night clubs and the odd restaurant, there is a sense that this is where it’s happening in the night scene in PE.

During the day its the playground of attorneys, architects, hairdressers, internet cafés and the odd high tech printer. At night this part of town has plenty of activity and the party goes on most of the night through, well, as much as PE does partying.

Drive to Schoenmakerskop, hike the Sacramento Trail

The Sacramento Trail is a moderately difficult 8 kilometre hike between the little coastal village of Schoenmakerskop and Sardinia Bay . You can choose to either do this as a one-way, in which case it is 4 kilometres, or as a circular route.

It’s a beautiful hike taking in the Sardinia Bay Nature Reserve with landscapes that include sea and land, but you’ll need a fair amount of nimbleness to manage the rocks at Sardinia Bay. You should pass through the Maitlands River mouth – a firm favourite amongst fishermen.

The City

Visit historical Bethelsdorp

Bethelsdorp is quite simply charming, and beautiful. At least one row of historic houses awaits you in the fashion of long, white Almshouses, built by the London Missionary Society way back in the early 1800s. The village predates both Uitenhage , another historical village worth a visit, and PE, and from 2008 the main square and the old cemetery have been in the process of being upgraded and restored.

There is also a circular trail one can do, starting in the historic village. It follows the Little Zwartkops River through Van der Kemp’s Kloof and then returns you to the commonage. It is 8 kilometres in its entirety but can be shortened to half that, but walk in a group and take a hat with you.

Take a cruise to St Croix Island

Bartolomeu Dias landed on St Croix Island, one of three islands in Algoa Bay just off Hougham Park, in 1488. It rests 12 nautical miles east of the city and is the main breeding ground of the penguin and other sea birds. It is a reserve and peoople are not allowed on the island. However, you can take a cruise around these islands and back to the harbour – roughly a three-hour long sail around the bay.

MTB Trails in South Africa

Cycle the Baakens River Mountain Bike Trail

Admittedly you need to be a keen cyclist for this trail, but it is one of two that Port Elizabeth boasts that are really worth doing. The other is the Zwartkops Mountain bike trail. The Baakens River trail starts at Dodd’s Farm, at the bottom of 9 th Avenue in Walmer and runs along a green belt through the city, which makes it that much more worthwhile given the historic moments it manages to include.

Port Elizabeth, now renamed Gqeberha, is one of the largest cities in South Africa. It is located halfway between Cape Town and Durban, on the beautiful shores of Nelson Mandela Bay. Port Elizabeth is known for its many blue-flag beaches and fun water sports. It also acts as the gateway to the Eastern Cape of South Africa, known for its big five game safari.
