The World's Longest Train Journeys

Train journeys.

Trains have always been an exciting way to travel, whether it involved Great Britain's elegant and speedy Mallard steam locomotive of late 1930s vintage or more modern state-of-the-art high-speed rail systems such as Japan's Shinkansen, France's TGV or Germany's ICE. As some parts of the world such as the UK and Israel finally experience some relief in their battles against Covid-19 through widespread vaccination, people are finally starting to dream about traveling again. For rail enthusiasts planning for some spectacular post-pandemic experiences, now is certainly a good time to plan ahead and chart a journey on some of the longest train routes on the planet.

An interesting feature published by The Telegraph took a look at the longest direct rail routes that do not involve changing train. The Trans–Siberian Railway which connects Moscow with the Russian far east is still the world's longest direct rail route, running for 9,259 kilometers or 5,753 miles. The journey passes through the Ural Mountains, Siberia's birch forests and Lake Baikal, taking six days according to The Telegraph. The second-longest route without changing can be found in Canada with the journey from Toronto to Vancouver covering 4,466 kilometers or 2,775 miles. Third place goes to China where the stretch between Shanghai and Lhasa covers 4,373 kilometers of 2,717 miles.

Description

This chart shows the longest direct rail journeys that do not involve changing train (by distance).

World's longest train journey takes 21 days from Portugal to Singapore

Danial Martinus

Most of us neglect to factor trains into our usual idea of traveling – what, with car ownership a norm in most developed and developing nations. And of course, flying is a very popular option among the more financially-comfortable.

But what if you could take in the sights and sounds of dozens of countries in a series of trains, on a trip that lasts 21 days, spanning a whopping 18,755 kilometers?

A crazy idea but technically feasible.

Some wizards over at the r/MapPorn subreddit have managed to figure out the route for the (hypothetically) longest possible train journey in the world, stretching from Lagos in southern Portugal all the way to Singapore.

IMAGE: htGoSEVe / Reddit

Reddit user u/htGoSEVe posted a map detailing a specific route that would take travelers through 13 different countries, including Spain, Poland, Belarus, Mongolia, Vietnam, Thailand, and Malaysia, to name a few.

This route is only made possible due to the recent opening of a new line in Laos, dubbed the Boten–Vientiane railway , which connects Kunming, China to Vientiane, the capital of Laos.

Prior to the line's opening, however, travelers would have had to end their train journey in Vietnam, with a total coverage of 16,898 kilometers.

Including overnight stops.

The Boten-Vientiane railway opened on December 2, 2021. IMAGE: The Associated Press / Stuff

According to Mark Smith of seat61.com , a rail expert who assisted with trip calculations, the trip would technically take 21 days to complete, including several overnight stops to factor in the time needed to process documents like visas, as well as securing seats at connecting trains.

Some connecting trains also require leaving stations and traveling through various cities to get to the next train, located in a different station. Overall, the amount of money you'd need to spend on train tickets alone amounts to roughly US$1,350.

Yes, yes, it might still sound like a lot of money for us weaker-currency folks in Southeast Asia * haiya* – but of course, if you're from Singapore, this probably doesn't sound like much.

An added benefit of making this trip is the lower carbon footprint compared to flying from Portugal to Singapore. For example, if you were to take a flight from Lisbon, Portugal all the way to Singapore's Changi Airport, you'd be contributing to 1.67 tonnes of CO2 emissions.

Opting for this train ride would result with only 0.08 tonnes of CO2. As to whether this train journey is worth it for the greater good of the planet, that's really up to you to decide.

Things to keep in mind.

Reddit user u/htGoSEVe notes that the trip might not technically be possible at the moment, given certain border restrictions brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic.

This includes a specific train line from Lisbon, Portugal to Hendaye, France, which was suspended due to COVID-19, "but it doesn't look hopeful that it will ever come back."

But u/htGoSEVe does provide alternatives, available on three other train lines. Check out the rest of the edits here – there are quite a few.

Other Reddit users, like u/tancredi88 , u/peksync , and u/Leo_ian , offered their own useful corrections to the train route, revealing that there isn't currently a train from Malaysia to Singapore, due to temporary service suspensions between Johor Bahru and Woodlands in the city state.

What does this mean for the people crazy and adventurous enough to take on this incredibly long train journey? You'll probably have to wait until travel restrictions are fully lifted.

Schynige Platte Railway

Trains have come a long way since first the steam-powered railway journey took place first 1804. But while we now have bullet-trains and high-speed railways, there’s something very nostalgic about a steam train, hearing the gentle chug as it rolls along, transporting you back to the golden age of railway travel. For utter romance on the railways, look no further than these amazing steam train trips from around the world.

The Longest Train Journeys in the World

Intercity and international train travel revolutionised how people and goods moved around the world. The world’s longest train journeys offer a glimpse of the world like no other means of transportation can. Here are the longest train journeys in the world.

It’s all about the journey, not the destination. Flying around the world is undoubtedly faster and more convenient, but there’s something magical about the sights, sounds and smells of long-distance train travel, including the longest train route in the world. Let’s track the world’s longest train journeys.

When it comes to the history of train tracks, while we think of modern tracks as metal railway lines, the idea of tracked-travel actual dates back much further than the industrial revolution. In fact, the oldest known tracks in the world are around six thousands years old, and were found in the wetlands of Somerset. A paved trackway was uncovered in Greece to transport boats across the Isthmus of Corinth around 600 BC. There were also ancient paved trackways built in Roman Egypt, and wooden rails with sleepers have been found in China dating to around the second century BC.

Over the next 1,800 years, trains and tracks got more sophisticated and were used to move goods and people all over the world. Today, trains move around 40% of the world’s cargo every year, as well as billions of people from city to city and country to country.

Before we get to the list of the world’s longest train journeys, we need to undertake a little bit of housekeeping. The journeys on this list are direct routes. You can, in theory, take a train journey from Portugal’s west coast all the way to Singapore, but it’s not direct and involves a number of overnight city stops. The theoretical longest train ride in the world takes travellers through dozens of countries and would take about three weeks. The distance? A mere 18,755 kilometres!

Here are the contenders for the longest train route in the world.

Aberdeen to Penzance | UK

Passing through Aberdeen (Photo: Construction Photography/Avalon via Getty Images)

Distance : 1,245 kilometres | Approximate duration : 13 hours

One of the world’s longest train journeys is from the Scottish city of Aberdeen to Penzance on Cornwall’s western tip. There are thirty-five stations on the route and the train is stationary for around two hours as it drops off and picks up passengers.

Chicago to Emeryville | USA

Amtrak’s California Zephyr (Photo: sanfel via iStock)

Distance : 3,924 kilometres | Approximate duration : 51 hours

One of the longest train journeys in the world is from Chicago in Illinois to the California town of Emeryville aboard Amtrak’s California Zephyr. The ride takes passengers through the Nebraska plains to Colorado, through the Rockies and the snow-capped Sierra Nevada mountains and on via Utah, Nevada and finally California. It has been described as one of America’s most scenic train trips.

Dibrugarh to Kanyakumari | India

Indian railway train (Photo: abhisheklegit via Getty Images)

Distance : 4,282 kilometres | Approximate duration : 80 hours

India’s longest train journey runs from the northeastern corner of India to its southern tip and crosses eight states. The journey is known as the Dibrugarh – Kanyakumari Vivek Superfast Express, but that’s a slight misnomer. The train travels at the rather sedate speed of around 57 km/h and stops 58 times.

Sydney to Perth | Australia

The Indian Pacific (Photo: BeyondImages via Getty Images)

Distance : 4,352 kilometres | Approximate duration : 65 hours

There’s no better seat from where to see the wonder of the Australian outback than from the Indian Pacific, one of the longest trains in the world. Stopping in Adelaide, the ghost town of Cook and the old mining town of Broken Hill, one of the longest train journeys in the world includes the planet’s longest stretch of straight railway track at 297 miles across the Nullarbor Plain.

Toronto to Vancouver | Canada

Passing through Canadian Rockies and Countryside (Photo: MJ_Prototype via Getty Images)

Distance : 4,466 kilometres | Approximate duration : 95 hours

The journey between Toronto’s Union Station and Pacific Central Station in Vancouver is not only a contender for longest train route in the world, it is one of the world’s most tranquil train journeys. The Canadian takes passengers through the breathtakingly beautiful Canadian countryside, including the Rocky Mountains and the stunning Canadian Shield.

Guangzhou to Lhasa

On the way to Guangzhou (Photo: Laser1987 via Getty Images)

Distance : 4,980 kilometres | Approximate duration : 54 hours

One of the world’s longest train journeys offers some of the most stunning views in the world. • The World's Longest Train Journeys

The Trans-Siberian Railways services are popular among tourists to Russia.

Rail transportation is one of the oldest forms of modern transport. Even today, it is used by hundreds of millions of people around the world. In many places, trains are often the cheapest option for long distance travel across land. Furthermore, it can also be comfortable and enjoyable as trains tend to be spacious and allow passengers to observe their surroundings. In addition to passenger transport, trains also allow large amounts of goods to be transported and serve an important role in the economy of imports and exports. The world's longest rail journey is the Trans-Siberian Railway.

Longest Train Services

Trans-siberian railway.

The longest train service in the world is known as the Trans-Siberian Railway. It runs from Moscow, Russia to Vladivostok, Russia. This train service is used for both tourist transportation and transporting goods across the country, and is the most important train service in Russia. Approximately 30% of Russia’s exports travel through this train service. The total time it takes this train to get from start to finish is nearly six days and in this time it covers over 9,000 kilometers.

Chinese Train Services

After the Trans-Siberian Railway, the next three longest train services in the world are located in China with the longest being the service from Guangzhou to Lhasa. The Train that operates on this route is the T264, and it is operated by China Railways. The primary purpose of this train is to serve as a passenger mover, and a train departs on this route once a day. The time this train takes to reach its final destination is approximately 2 and a half days and in this time it covers almost 5000 kilometers.

Toronto to Vancouver, Canada

Another long train service is found in Canada between Toronto and Vancouver. The train that runs this route is called the Canadian, and it is operated by Via Rail Canada. This train is a passenger train, and it is known to be one of the most scenic train journeys in the world. The total time it takes for this train to reach its final destination is over three days and the distance it covers in this time is 4,446 kilometers. This journey is the longest train service in North America, and it is the fifth longest train service in the world. A train on this route leaves three times a week.

Tourism Aspect of Train Services

All of these train services attract many tourists, both domestic and international. The Trans-Siberian Railway is very popular for international visitors, but it also attracts a large number of Russians. Similar can be said about all these trains as they attract many domestic and international tourists. It is not always that the tourists use these services to get from one place to another, but often they avail these services to enjoy the experience. The main reason for this is the scenic settings of these train routes. With all this is mind, it can be safe to say that train services are a big part of the tourism industry.

This is The Longest Train Route in the World as of 2024

longest steam train journey in the world

When it comes to international travel, airplanes typically come to mind as it makes for a quicker and cheaper journey.

You may even prefer traveling via car as it offers more privacy. However, if you have time, money, and a sense of adventure into the unknown, then doing the longest train route in the world might be on your bucket list.

Traveling by train imparts something romantic and poetic, reminiscent of days long gone before planes even existed.

Why not enjoy the fantastic scenery of over a dozen countries on this epic 21-day, 18,755-kilometer train journey across Europe, Siberia, and Asia?

The longest train route in the world

The hypothetical (but totally possible) route is the brainchild of train lovers on the subreddit and with help from the train expert Mark Smith’s website seat61.com, a popular place for guides and tips on long train journeys around the world.

This longer route has only recently become possible with the opening of the new Chinese-built $6 billion Boten–Vientiane railway in Laos that connects China to Southeast Asia.

longest train journeys

The longest train route in the world starts in southern Portugal in Lagos, making its way through Spain on towards Paris.

The Lisbon-Hendaye route is currently suspended due to Covid-19 and doesn’t seem to be coming back anytime soon. There are alternate routes to get to Paris. e

After Paris, you’ll head through the rest of Western Europe until the journey reaches Eastern Europe and Russia with the famous “Trans-Siberian” railway line taking around 6 days from Moscow to Beijing and covering Mongolia on the way.

Next, you’ll go from Boten to Vientiane, Laos after a long journey through China. The new railroad just opened on Dec 3, 2021.

Before this, you would have had to take a train to Saigon, but no railroad connects Vietnam and Thailand. The old way to make this journey is from a bus through Cambodia and on to Thailand.

longest train route thailand

Now with the new railroad, the longest train route in the world is now possible. From Vientiane, you’ll reach Bangkok, and from there it’s the last leg of the journey into spectacular Malaysia, finally ending in Singapore.

21 estimated days and 18,755km later you’ll finally make the longest train route in the world.

The cost of this epic journey is an estimated €1,200 which is not much more than a plane ticket from Western Europe to Singapore, and you’ll get to see 13 countries on the way, we think the amazing journey is definitely worth it.

Here is a high res version of the map of the journey if you’re interested.

There’s something enduringly romantic about train travel. The slower pace, the gentle rhythm, the ability to surrender responsibility and just gaze out of the window. It’s true of all – well, most – rail journeys. But it’s especially true of the sleeper train, the hotel-on-wheels aboard which you can bed down in one country and wake up in another.

Romance aside, train travel is also far less damaging to the planet: it releases the least amount of greenhouse gasses of all forms of transportation. You’re better able to understand the connections that exist between places on a rail trip, watching the scenery change as cities become suburbs, which become farmland, which become foothills or deserts or plains.

There’s a variety of experiences to choose from when booking overnight train travel, from the budget to the luxe. Here are some of the most epic overnight train journeys to take for those looking for a dream of a ride.

Swiss railway company breaks the record for world's longest passenger train

A Swiss railway company has claimed the record for the world's longest passenger train on the weekend, with a trip on one of the most spectacular tracks through the Alps.

On Saturday, local time, the Rhaetian Railway company conducted its world record attempt.

Here are four things to know about the new record:

How long was the train?

Two people sit on a hill as a red train goes past in front of mountains

The Swiss train comprised 100 carriages measuring a total length of 1.9 kilometres.

With dazzling sunshine reflecting off its shiny, silver roof — and with a digital destination sign on the front reading "Alpine Cruise" — the train carried 150 passengers.

For comparison, an average Sydney passenger carriage is about 20 metres in length — in a typical, eight-carriage train, that's just over 160m, including space for the driver.

The Swiss world record train was almost 12 times that length.

Where did the train go?

A red train travels between mountains winding between trees

The train ran the along the Albula-Bernina route from Preda to Berguen, which is located about 172 kilometres south-east of Zurich.

Its nearly-25-kilometre route was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2008.

Taking about an hour, the train's journey led through 22 tunnels, some of which spiral through mountains, and across 48 bridges, including the curved Landwasser Viaduct, which towers 65m above the ravine below.

Thousands of rail enthusiasts lined the valley to watch the train's sections wind their way through the Alps.

Why did they attempt to break the record?

Rhaetian Railway company director Renato Fasciati said the record attempt was intended to highlight some of Switzerland's engineering achievements and to celebrate 175 years of Swiss railways.

Holding up the Guinness World Record diploma, he said there had been significant challenges to ensure such a long train could travel safely.

The seven train drivers and 21 technicians onboard had to make sure "that all 25 trains do the same, accelerating and braking" at the same time, and were all "guided by the first … driver," he said.

Few countries have a rail network as dense as Switzerland, which is famous for having punctual trains.

The wealthy Alpine country saw the departure of its first train service on August 9, 1847, linking Zurich to Baden, 23 kilometres to the north-west, a trip that took 33 minutes.

What was the previous world record?

While there are freight trains that are longer — with some measuring more than 3km — Saturday's event featured, by far, the longest passenger train ever run.

The previous record was held by the National Belgian Railway Company for a 70-carriage train measuring 1.7km in length.

That train set the record on April 7, 1991, travelling from Ghent to Ostend in Belgium's north-east in a 1-hour, 11-minute, 62.5km journey.  That record attempt aimed to fund the Belgian Cancer Fund.

The Swiss train was at least 200m longer than the Belgian one.

Exploring The Longest Ever Trains: History, Types, And Records

In this post, we delve into the world of the longest ever trains, exploring their , , and records. From freight trains to passenger trains and the latest technological advancements, we cover it all. Join us on this journey of discovery.

Longest Ever Train

Have you ever wondered what the longest train in the world is? The answer may surprise you. The longest train ever recorded was a freight train in Australia that measured an astonishing 4.5 miles long. This train was made up of 682 wagons and was pulled by eight locomotives. To put that into perspective, that’s roughly the distance from the Empire State Building to Central Park in New York City.

Definition and History

A train is a series of connected rail vehicles that are used to transport passengers or freight from one location to another. Trains have been used for transportation for over 200 years, and they have come a long way since their inception. The first steam-powered locomotive was invented in 1804 by Richard Trevithick, and it was used to haul coal from a mine in Wales.

Types of Longest Trains

There are two of longest trains: passenger trains and freight trains. Passenger trains are designed to transport people, while freight trains are designed to transport goods. The longest passenger train in the world is the Indian Pacific, which travels from Sydney to Perth in Australia. This train covers a distance of 2,704 miles and takes around 65 hours to complete the journey.

Freight trains, on the other hand, are much longer than passenger trains. These trains can be up to 3 miles long and can carry up to 20,000 tons of cargo. They are used to transport goods such as coal, grain, and oil across long distances .

Technological Advancements

With the advancement of technology, trains have become faster, safer, and more efficient. The invention of the diesel engine in the 1920s revolutionized the transportation industry, and it allowed trains to travel longer distances without stopping . In recent years, trains have become even more advanced with the introduction of high-speed trains and maglev trains.

High-speed trains can travel at speeds of up to 220 mph, and they are used to transport passengers across long distances quickly . The fastest high-speed train in the world is the Shanghai Maglev, which can travel at speeds of up to 267 mph.

Maglev trains use magnetic levitation to lift the train off the track, reducing friction and allowing the train to travel at high speeds. These trains are currently being developed in countries such as Japan and China, and they have the potential to revolutionize the transportation industry.

Longest Passenger Train

When it comes to long passenger trains, the record is held by the Indian Railways. The train is called the Vivek Express, and it covers a distance of 4273 km, from Dibrugarh in Assam to Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu. This journey takes about 82 hours and includes 56 stops along the way.

Introduction and Background

The Vivek Express is named after Swami Vivekananda, a famous philosopher and spiritual leader in India. It was first introduced in 2011 and has since become one of the most popular ways to travel across the country. The train has 24 coaches and can accommodate up to 1200 passengers.

Train Route and Schedule

The Vivek Express runs on a weekly schedule, departing from Dibrugarh every Saturday at 11:00 am and arriving in Kanyakumari on Wednesday at 5:00 pm. Along the way, it passes through some of the most scenic parts of India, including the tea gardens of Assam, the beaches of Goa, and the backwaters of Kerala.

The train makes stops at major cities along the way, including Guwahati, Kolkata, Chennai, and Bangalore. Passengers have the option to disembark at any of these stops and continue their journey at a later time.

Amenities and Services

The Vivek Express offers a range of amenities and services to make the long journey more comfortable. Each coach is air-conditioned and has comfortable seating with ample legroom. Passengers are provided with clean bedding and towels, and there are separate toilets and washrooms for men and women.

The train also has a pantry car that serves a variety of meals, snacks, and beverages. Passengers can choose from a range of vegetarian and non-vegetarian options, as well as special meals for those with dietary restrictions.

For those who prefer a more luxurious experience, the Vivek Express offers a first-class AC coach with private cabins, individual TVs, and en-suite bathrooms. However, these tickets are in high demand and must be booked well in advance.

Longest Freight Train

When it comes to freight transportation, longer trains can bring significant benefits in terms of efficiency and cost-effectiveness. In this section, we will explore the world of longest freight trains, starting with an introduction and background.

Freight trains have been around since the early 19th century, and they have come a long way since then. Today, they are the backbone of the global economy, transporting goods and raw materials across vast distances. The length of these trains has also increased significantly, with some of them spanning over 2 miles in length.

The primary reason for longer trains is to maximize the use of rail infrastructure and reduce operating costs. Longer trains mean that more freight can be transported per train, which results in fewer trips and less fuel consumption. Moreover, longer trains can also help reduce congestion on the roads and highways, which has a positive impact on the environment.

Train Composition and Cargo

The composition of a freight train can vary depending on the cargo it carries. However, most trains typically consist of a locomotive and several freight cars. The number of cars can vary, but some of the longest trains can have up to 300 cars or more.

The cargo carried by these trains can also be diverse, ranging from coal, grain, and oil to automobiles, chemicals, and consumer goods. The type of cargo determines the type of freight car used, which can be open or enclosed, depending on the nature of the goods.

Challenges and Benefits

While longer trains can bring many benefits, they also pose some challenges. One of the primary challenges is the need for longer sidings and rail yards to accommodate these trains. Longer trains also require more powerful locomotives, which can be expensive and challenging to maintain.

Another challenge is the impact on the environment, as longer trains are more challenging to maneuver, resulting in more noise and emissions. However, the benefits of longer trains outweigh the challenges, as they help reduce transportation costs, increase efficiency, and reduce the number of trucks on the road.

Records and Achievements

When it comes to the world of trains, there are some remarkable records and achievements that have been set over the years. From the longest trains in the world to the fastest, the industry has seen some incredible feats. In this section, we’ll explore some of the most notable records and achievements in the world of trains.

Longest Train in the World

The title of the longest train in the world goes to a train that runs in Australia. Known as the “Iron Ore Express,” this train is a freight train that measures a staggering 4.5 miles in length. It is operated by BHP Billiton and transports iron ore from Newman to Port Hedland.

The train is made up of 682 wagons and is pulled by eight locomotives. It travels a distance of 280 miles and takes around 40 hours to complete the journey. The train is so long that it requires two drivers who swap shifts halfway through the journey.

Longest Train in the United States

The longest train in the United States is operated by Union Pacific Railroad and is used to transport coal. Known as the “Super Train,” this freight train measures around 3 miles in length and consists of over 230 wagons. It is powered by six locomotives and can transport up to 22,000 tons of coal in a single trip.

The Super Train runs between the Powder River Basin in Wyoming and power plants in the Midwest and South. It travels a distance of around 1,400 miles and takes around three days to complete the journey.

Other Notable Records and Achievements

Aside from the longest trains in the world and the United States, there are other notable records and achievements in the world of trains. For example, the fastest train in the world is the Shanghai Maglev, which can reach speeds of up to 267 miles per hour.

Play and stay in the mountains of eastern Nevada

Discover the best winter adventures and uncommon overnighters offered in one of the Silver State’s most idyllic mountainscapes.

longest steam train journey in the world

Every winter, Nevada ’s snowy peaks beckon cold crusaders and adventurous spirits from around the world. It’s no wonder—the state’s very name originates from the Spanish word nevada , meaning “snow-capped.” It’s a destination that delivers on its promise of pillow-soft powder amid an incredible backdrop, with views that stretch as far as the eye can see.

One of the state’s best-kept secrets for winter adventure are the Ruby Mountains . A roughly 3 ½-hour drive from Salt Lake City, the greater Ruby Mountain Wilderness stretches for 90,000 acres, and includes 10 breathtaking peaks over 10,000 feet tall, as well as dozens of alpine lakes and around 300 miles of trails.

National Geographic Adventure Photographer Tara Kerzhner recently went on assignment to the Ruby Mountains and surrounding towns to capture the region’s most exhilarating winter activities and experiences. Kerzhner is no stranger to high-altitude escapades—she’s photographed action-packed sports for almost 20 years—but this trip was a first for her. From extreme skiing to one-of-a-kind overnight stays, take a look at Kerzhner’s uniquely Nevada winter journey.

For thrill-seekers like Kerzhner, it doesn’t get more epic than heli-skiing. The peaks in the Ruby Mountains see a couple hundred inches of snowfall each season, and one of the best ways to access this backcountry terrain is to hop in a high-altitude helicopter—or buckle up for a ride in a powerful PistenBully snowcat.

For 47 years, the family-owned and operated Ruby Mountain Heli Experience has welcomed skiers who dream of bluebird powder days. When the Royer family launched Ruby Mountain Heli Experience in 1977, they had no idea they’d one day become the oldest family-owned, heli-skiing operation in the United States. This is thanks in part to their continued dedication to their operation—and to the expert guides and staff who prioritize the safety of their guests. Taking a run down these slopes is as memorable as it gets.

“Despite being no stranger to big mountains, heli-skiing was a first [for me]. What’s happening at Ruby Mountain Heli simply cannot be missed.” Tara Kerzhner

From the start of their journey, the Royer family set their hearts on creating a lodge experience to share their hospitality. In 2017, their dream came true with the opening of the 10-room Ruby 360 Lodge , which offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Ruby Mountains. Here, guests are greeted with the type of welcome that makes you feel like you are part of the family. Add on a cozy, crackling fireplace, exquisite food and beverages, first-class sleeping accommodations, and friendly, dedicated staff—it’s the type of stay that leaves a lasting imprint.

For guests seeking a more adventurous stay, the 120-acre private property also offers two secluded yurts : the Conrad Creek Yurt and the Ruby High Yurt, located at 7,000 and 9,700 feet, respectively. These solar-powered yurts are perfect for up to four campers who aren’t afraid of heights and dream of sleeping under the stars.

Ready to tackle her next adventure, Kerhzner packed up and headed south to discover fire, ice, and the Old West in Ely, Nevada . Winter lovers descend on the mountain town each January for three days of art and athletics at the annual Fire and Ice Winter Festival . For more than 20 years, this has been Nevada’s most creative winter celebration, packed with of ice sculpting, community art projects, concerts, and scavenger hunts. There are friendly feats of strength and endurance, like snowshoeing, fat biking, and cross-country ski racing competitions held at nearby Ward Mountain . Ice fishing at Comins Lake , just a 10-minute drive from downtown Ely, is also popular with locals and visitors. The lake spans an impressive 410 acres and is home to hefty amounts of trout and bass.

The main attraction of the Fire and Ice weekend occurs on Saturday night. Experienced pyrotechnicians, with the help of the Nevada Northern Railway put on a one-of-a-kind fireworks display that’s not to be missed. This year they enlisted the help of Locomotive 93, a beautiful steam-powered train built in 1909, to do the honors. Spectators watched with wonderment as the train shoots off the night’s fireworks display while simultaneously chugging down the tracks. After the show, festival attendees and locals migrated over to the railway’s station to enjoy an impressive art sculpture bonfire, an event that brings the community together while paying tribute to Burning Man .

As someone who is enamored with trains, the Nevada Northern Railway Museum was a must-see for Kerzhner. The 56-acre National Historic Landmark includes 60 structures that date back to 1906. Visitors can travel through time by viewing the original steam and diesel locomotives and some original written records of monumental events in US history. Both the railway’s beloved cat Dirt Junior (otherwise known as DJ and successor to the original “Dirt” ) and its charismatic and knowledgeable executive director, Mark Bassett, can be found roaming the shop.

“If you're seeking an experience unlike any other, look no further than the historic Nevada Northern Railway Museum. I can't emphasize enough the joy this stop brought me. From the functioning steam engine trains to Facebook-famous cats, there's bound to be something here that you’ll want to see.” Tara Kerzhner

For a stay in Ely that’s rich in history and heritage, be sure to check into the iconic Hotel Nevada and Gambling Hall . When it was built in 1929, this was the tallest building in the state. (Today, it’s the tallest in Ely.) At one time, this was a favorite stop of the rich and famous as they ventured between California and Sun Valley, Idaho. Today, the 64 recently renovated rooms above the casino serve as a time capsule of Nevada history, with plenty of 20th-century artifacts and mementos. Because of its location on the Loneliest Road in America and the Great Basin Highway , the hotel is considered a road-tripper rite of passage.

About an hour’s drive from Ely is Great Basin National Park , another one of Nevada’s best-kept secrets. The park is home to the state’s second-tallest peak (Wheeler Peak, which tops off at 13,063 feet) and has the distinction of being an International Dark Sky Park. All of the Silver State’s geographic diversity is here: alpine lakes, ancient bristlecone pine forests, scenic mountain streams, and snow-capped peaks. In one of the country's last true dark night skies, visitors can spot the Milky Way and other galaxies, planets, and thousands of stars and constellations most nights with the naked eye.

Great Basin National Park is also home to the state’s longest—and one of the most spectacular—underground cave systems in the state. A whole new world opens up as you descend into Lehman Caves , which was discovered in the mid-1880s. Inside, there are stalagmites, stalactites, and helictites that seem to defy gravity, along with more than 500 shield formations. This intricate ecosystem is home to the pseudoscorpion and other creatures only found in this region.

After these iconic above- and below-ground adventures, Kerzhner was ready for some much-needed shut-eye, and there’s no better spot to sleep under a blanket of stars than at the Stargazer Inn in Baker. Reitred National Park Service employee James Woolsey and his wife, Liz Woolsey, opened the Stargazer Inn and Bristlecone General Store in 2022. Together, they serve, respectively, as the Chief Enthusiasm Officer and the Chief Fun Officer of the properties. The Bristlecone General Store is many things to many people, including a showcase for local artists, an outdoor gear store, a grocery and refueling station, and a community hub for those from near and far. The Stargazer Inn sits at the gateway to the national park, and at night, the Milky Way swirls over the property.

“My stay at the Stargazer Inn was a highlight of my week. From the locally sourced groceries to the well-curated room amenities, along with the down-to-earth hospitality, I truly cannot imagine a better place to visit—or, in my case—return to.” Tara Kerzhner

longest steam train journey in the world

On the way back to Salt Lake City, chances are you’ll pass the Confederated Tribes of the Goshute Reservation in White Pine County. About 150 tribal citizens live on these 122,085 acres that span Nevada and Utah. Kerzhner stopped by to chat with friend Chuck Naranjo, who is the wellness coordinator of the Goshute Diabetes Program. He is also a tribal citizen, fitness coach, and weightlifter who inspires his community to invest in their health and wellness. While their connection to the land has remained unchanged, Naranjo believes the tribe needs to continue to evolve—and he puts fitness and athletics at the forefront of that evolution. He wants people to challenge stereotypes and understand that Natives lift weights, rock climb, ski big mountains, and train like everyone else. They do it all.

longest steam train journey in the world

“The way I look at it, it's like fitness is my medicine no matter what type I'm doing," says Naranjo. "It's the freest therapy you can do. As long as you get moving, it's medicine, and it's also fitness."

One of Nevada ’s best characteristics is that it offers visitors a chance to be active and get outdoors year-round. Exploring places like these in eastern Nevada opens up an entirely different world—one where the snow sparkles by day and the skies sparkle by night, and where visitors can feel the magnitude of nature and history at every turn.
