Over the past few years, immersive digital art museums have drawn crowds everywhere from Tokyo to Paris to Bordeaux . (There was even a drive-in exhibit in Toronto last year.) Now, people in the United States finally get to enjoy this 360-degree experience set to music with not one, but five traveling shows featuring the work of Dutch artist Vincent van Gogh. While each of the shows is distinct, they are similar in that they place visitors in the middle of large-scale moving images that are projected onto the walls, ceilings, and floors in a large gallery or warehouse space.
Find out more about where each show is happening, how they differ (slightly), and how to get tickets:
1. Immersive Van Gogh
Created and run by one of the directors behind the Van Gogh show at Atelier des Lumières in Paris (aka the digital art show featured in Netflix’s Emily in Paris ), Immersive Van Gogh features more than 500,000 cubic feet of projections and lasts one hour. Expect to see iconic van Gogh works, including The Potato Eaters (1885), Starry Night (1889), Sunflowers (1888), and The Bedroom (1889). The large-scale digital animations of the Dutch painter’s work are set to original songs composed by Italian multimedia composer Luca Longobardi.
The show is currently open in 15 U.S. cities, with upcoming events in several other U.S. cities in early 2022. In a review in the Chicago Tribune , arts reporter Steve Johnson likened it to an “updated version” of those 1970s Pink Floyd laser light shows at a planetarium.
“But instead of the borderline skeezy rock culture undertones of a Floyd show, making it about an artist . . . puts a veneer of high culture on the whole thing,” Johnson wrote. “Tonight’s head trip is being sponsored by your college’s core curriculum requirement in humanities and the arts.”
Tickets are sold by timed entry and are going quickly. Social distancing circles are projected on the floor of the gallery to give guests their own space during their visit.

The Immersive Show Bringing Van Gogh Home to London
Editorial Manager
Having toured 65 cities around the world and entertained more than 7m visitors, Van Gogh Alive arrives in London this year, with record numbers expected to attend as the UK prepares for a domestic summer. Vincent van Gogh is one of the most influential artists ever to have picked up a paintbrush, and his work is often linked with his Dutch birthplace, but this show is also something of a homecoming for the Old Master.
“The time Vincent van Gogh spent in London was extremely formative for the artist,” explains Livia Wang, creative director of Van Gogh House . “Arriving at the tender young age of 20, this city is where Vincent came of age and formed his opinions on art, life and politics. There is something very relatable about being young and leaving home for the first time, moving to a new city.”
The immersive show is now open and is housed in a purpose-built gallery in Kensington Gardens. You can step right inside the artist’s paintings for a new way of looking at his work. From static displays to reimagined variations on masterpieces, Van Gogh Alive does away with the conventions of traditional art galleries where silence is golden. Music accompanies the shows, which are projected throughout a number of rooms and onto a variety of surfaces.

One of those places that left a big mark on a young Vincent is now the site of a building that honours his time in the city. “The Van Gogh House is a small, terraced house in Stockwell, South London, where Vincent lived for a year in 1873,” says Livia Wang. “He was very happy living here, writing about the flowers he grew in the garden and the school that his landlady ran from the front parlour. The building is 200 years old and has hardly changed in all this time.” Van Gogh House is open to the public, with guided tours, workshops and other exhibitions available to visitors.
Fellow artists are in for an even bigger treat, however, as Wang tells Culture Trip about the most exciting aspect for many future creatives: “Residencies are a big part of our programme, where we close the house for periods to allow artists to live and work from the building. Artists are able to sleep in Van Gogh’s bedroom and work from a purpose-built garden studio. I think it is brilliant that new art can be made in this historic setting.”
Not many Londoners know about the time Van Gogh spent in their own city. Wang says: “Vincent came to London to work for his uncle’s art dealership, Goupil & Cie. They had offices and showrooms in the Hague, Paris , Berlin , Brussels , New York and London. The office in London was more of a warehouse than an art gallery, and Vincent would have learnt how to deal prints and reproductions of paintings, earning around £90 a year – which would have just about covered his room and board, with a little to spare.”
Let’s not dwell too long on how far £90 would get you in London today, and instead take a closer look at what Vincent (apparently, the artist got locals to call him by his first name, as many found it difficult to pronounce his surname properly) got up to in the bustling capital.
One of the first things he did was buy a top hat, to try to fit in with the fashion of the time. “Vincent loved to walk round the city, too, including commuting from our house on Hackford Road in Brixton to the office in Covent Garden six days a week,” says Wang. “According to his letters, this took a mere 45 minutes, favouring a route over Westminster Bridge. He would also spend weekends in Hyde Park admiring people riding on Rotten Row, as well as taking long walks to Crystal Palace and Box Hill. He visited London’s galleries, such as the National Gallery, the Royal Academy of Art, the British Museum, the South Kensington Museum (now the V&A) and Dulwich Picture Gallery. His signature is still in the guestbooks of these places today.”
It would be a stretch for Londoners to claim Van Gogh as one of their own – he did speak four languages and spent significant time in several European countries, after all – but there does seem to be something special about his time here. Wang says: “As a Londoner, Vincent read voraciously, from the poems of Keats to the bucolic landscapes of George Eliot. He particularly loved the socially engaged stories of Charles Dickens. He would often buy copies of London magazines The London Illustrated News and The Graphic, poring over the black-and-white prints illustrating the plight of London’s working classes, prints he continued collecting throughout his life.”
Van Gogh Alive lets you step into the worlds the artist created and get a better understanding of what makes his work endure to this day. The show runs until 26 September and is open seven days a week. Tickets can be booked in advance , and the closest tube is High Street Kensington.

Immersive Vincent Van Gogh exhibitions are taking over the US - here's where you can find them

Van Gogh fever is sweeping across the US. As we emerge into a post-pandemic world, a number of companies are hosting competing immersive Van Gogh exhibitions across cities in the US, giving art-lovers the opportunity to effectively step inside the Dutch artist's paintings with larger-than-life installations.
A trend often credited to an onscreen appearance in Netflix's Emily in Paris , the onslaught of immersive exhibits shows no signs of slowing, as current shows are regularly being extended and even more are slated to open in the coming months. And between the immense popularity of these events and the low costs involved, it’s not hard to see why.
“All of these companies are working from the same source material – the same Starry Night , the same Sunflowers – that is, Van Gogh’s instantly recognizable, incredibly valuable and, above all, freely available intellectual property,” Kriston Capps writes for Bloomberg CityLab. “His work falls in the public domain, so the only costs for using his pictures are licensing fees that producers pay museums or photographers for the use of high-resolution images.”
Despite similar names and subject matter, these exhibitions weren't all created equal – some companies have racked up complaints with the Better Business Bureau, for example, while others have earned rave reviews in the press and on social media, so be sure to do your homework before you book. Here's our guide to what's on offer and where and when you can find it.
Van Gogh Alive
Created by Grande Experiences, Van Gogh Alive has gained international notoriety in more than 65 countries so far. The visual spectacle uses ceiling digital projection to present more than 3000 Van Gogh images at enormous scale, filling giant screens, walls, columns, ceilings and even the floor. Synchronized to a powerful classical score, it immerses visitors in the vibrant colors and vivid details that constitute the artist's unique style, while aromas are infused throughout the auditorium so that museum-goers can literally stop and smell the sunflowers.

Imagine Van Gogh
Imagine Van Gogh exhibition holds the honor of being what organizers claim is the first. Back in 1977, French photographer Albert Plécy transformed an underground quarry in the south of France into an immersive venue called Carrières de Lumière s. In 2001, Annabelle Mauger joined the team and created "the first" Van Gogh immersive exhibition alongside Julien Baron, which toured the world, most notably in Halle de La Villette in Paris. Now it's heading to the US, with 200 of Van Gogh's paintings presented in multimedia floor-to-ceiling installations, with music from Mozart and Bach. Separate galleries showcase more of the artist's work.

Van Gogh exhibitions coming up in 2024, a blockbuster and a surprise
London’s national gallery will top the bill, with a spectacular display of paintings from provence.
Adventures with Van Gogh is a weekly blog by Martin Bailey, our long-standing correspondent and expert on the artist. Published every Friday, his stories range from newsy items about this most intriguing artist to scholarly pieces based on his own meticulous investigations and discoveries. © Martin Bailey
The National Gallery’s show Van Gogh: Poets and Lovers (14 September 2024-19 January 2025) will be the highlight of its 200th birthday celebrations. We can disclose there will be around 50 paintings and drawings from the artist’s two years in Provence, when he was at the height of his powers.
Van Gogh’s Portrait of Eugène Boch (The Poet) (September 1888)

Why “poets” and “lovers”? One of Van Gogh’s friends in Arles, in the south of France, was the Belgian artist Eugène Boch. Although Boch does not seem to have actually written poetry, Van Gogh set out to portray him as an archetypal poet, sensitive and deep in thought. Van Gogh regarded Provence as the land of poetry.
Vincent wrote to his brother Theo about the Boch painting which he had been “dreaming about for a long time— the poet ”. He described the picture: “His fine head, with its green gaze, stands out in my portrait against a starry, deep ultramarine sky.” Van Gogh was pleased with the result, hanging it above his bed in the Yellow House.

Lovers are much more prevalent than poets in Van Gogh’s Arles paintings. Pairs of strolling lovers frequently occur in his landscapes, enlivening urban public garden scenes.
There must have been an element of wishful thinking in introducing lovers into his paintings, since by this time Vincent had realised that it was unlikely he himself would ever establish a long-term relationship with a woman. As he later wrote to his mother, “for me life might well remain solitary”.
The National Gallery show, focussed loosely around poets, lovers and gardens, will include exceptional loans, such as the Rhône riverscape Starry Night (October 1888, Musée d’Orsay, Paris) and a version of The Bedroom (September 1889, Art Institute of Chicago).
Van Gogh’s Self-portrait (spring 1887)

Next year’s other important Van Gogh exhibition will be in what may seem an unexpected venue—the Groninger Museum in the northern Dutch city of Groningen. The impetus for this is that one of the earliest shows of the artist’s work was held there in 1896. At that time it was the largest exhibition ever held on Van Gogh, with 128 works.
It is now very difficult to borrow Van Goghs, particularly for regional museums, but the Groninger is expecting around 10 paintings and 25 drawings. That represents a considerable achievement.
Nearly all the loans in How Van Gogh Came to Groningen (30 November 2024-5 May 2025) will be works that were in the 1896 show. The earlier exhibition included a self-portrait, and although the precise work has not been identified. For next year’s show the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam is lending one of the artist’s finest self-portraits, dating from spring 1887.
In the 1896 exhibition a bizarre juxtaposition was introduced: a portrait of Van Gogh by his friend Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec was displayed below a real crown of thorns.
In 1896 the Groningen organisers had asked Jo Bonger, Vincent’s sister-in-law, if they could borrow the Toulouse-Lautrec portrait and “hang a wreath around it, consisting chiefly of thorns, with a few laurel leaves”. This would associate Van Gogh, who had taken his own life six years earlier, with the suffering Christ. Vincent had died for his art, which had been ignored and failed to sell. The avant-garde regarded him as a martyr.
What makes this unusual arrangement of the portrait and crown of thorns particularly bizarre is that Toulouse-Lautrec had portrayed his friend in a Montmartre bar—a glass of absinthe close at hand. We are here reconstructing what it might have looked like in the 1896 exhibition.

Unfortunately the Toulouse-Lautrec portrait is a fragile pastel work, now at Amsterdam’s Van Gogh Museum, and cannot be lent for conservation reasons—so it won’t be appearing in next year’s show.
The Groninger Museum also has another reason to celebrate Van Gogh next year. Last September it successfully recovered a painting stolen from its collection. In 2020, The Parsonage Garden at Nuenen in Spring (March 1884) had been seized in a violent raid while on loan to the Singer Laren museum. The recovered painting is now being conserved at Amsterdam’s Van Gogh Museum and is expected to be reintegrated into the Groninger’s permanent display, possibly next spring.
Along with the London and Groningen 2024 exhibitions, there are five current Van Gogh shows which will extend into the first few weeks of the new year. Travelling with Vincent: Van Gogh in Drenthe , on the artist’s autumn 1883 visit to the northern peatlands of the Netherlands, is due to close at the Drents Museum in Assen on 7 January 2024.
Van Gogh along the Seine , featuring the work of Vincent and his avant-garde colleagues in the suburbs of Paris, ends at the Van Gogh Museum on 14 January 2024.
At Tokyo’s Sompo Museum of Art, Van Gogh and Still Life: From Tradition to Innovation closes on 21 January 2024. It is centred around the museum’s Sunflowers (November-December 1888).
Milan’s Museo delle Culture (Mudec) is showing Vincent van Gogh: Artist and Reader , with loans from the Kröller-Müller Museum, until 28 January 2024.
And lastly, Van Gogh in Auvers-sur-Oise: The Final Months finishes at the Musée d’Orsay in Paris on 4 February 2024.
Other Van Gogh news:
Van Gogh’s Weaver facing Right (February 1884)

Three Van Gogh works are coming up for sale in New York this month. Christie’s has the Nuenen painting Weaver facing Right (February 1884) to be auctioned on 9 November and estimated at $2m-$3m. Two days later it is selling a drawing, Young Girl with a Loaf of Bread (September-November 1882), with an estimate of $400,000-$600,000. And on 14 November Sotheby’s has another drawing, Head of a Fisherman, turned Three-Quarters to the Right (January-February 1883), estimated at $500,000-$700,000.
