Mon - Fri 8:30 - 5:00 by appt Tues & Thurs 9:30 - 1:30 (Emergency Assistance)

Journey to New Life was founded after a group of individuals came together to share experiences, discuss challenges and offer solutions to address the most at risk ex-offender populations. In September of 2013, three members of that group - Rita Flynn, Sr. Rose McLarney and Georgia Walker established the agency. They believed at least four major categories of former offenders were being underserved. Thus, Journey to New Life was established to fill that gap - to create a welcoming service center in the central city where all would be welcome to receive housing assistance and emergency assistance. Since our founding we have served more than 2000 clients annually through emergency assistance, providing food, clothing, prescription assistance, identification, personal hygiene, and work related items.

"Bravery takes only a moment; choosing sobriety is a split-second choice you can make. However, staying sober and moving through recovery is a lifestyle. There is nothing stopping you except you, and there is nothing braver than to be afraid and choose to do it anyway. " & ALL i see in these photos are BRAVE WOMEN who chose recovery as the lifestyle they want to live. Some of these ladies moved here not knowing a single connection but decided to do so anyways because they were tired of being tired and wanted to change. THATS SCARY but its possible and its brave. SO a HUGE SHOUT OUT TO OUR POST RESIDENTIAL AND OUR RESIDENTIAL LADIES FOR GETTING OUT OF YOUR OWN WAY AND MAKING THE DECISION EVERY SINGLE DAY TO STAY CLEAN AND SOBER FOR YOURSELF, YOUR FAMILY AND YOUR COMMUNITY. ✨

TESTOMINY TUESDAY!! First things first: Addiction is not a moral failing, a choice, or a character flaw. Addiction, also referred to as substance use disorder, is an illness. It’s not about your background, where you grew up, or how much money you make. addiction can happen to anyone. So proud of our post resident graduate Jay O'dell Released from prison 8 months ago in February 2023 to Establishing a place of her own that she can call home. Here is the testimony of a women who grew up in a healthy environment, Graduated high school and went to college, yet her journey had just begun. "...for the longest time I just couldn't understand why or how any of this could have happened to me. Addiction does not discriminate and it can happen when you least expect it. Just when I felt like I was safe and in the clear, just when I felt like I knew everything there was to know about life - I couldn't have been more wrong, and definitely did not see any of this coming until it was too late. Addiction took over my life around the age of 27 and it rocked my world like nothing else had ever done before. Prior to that, life was great. I grew up in a great family environment, I played softball in high school, and went off to play in college as well. I was a role model student-athlete at the collegiate level. I received my Bachelors Degrees' in Sports Business Management and Psychology from Maryville University in St. Louis as well as completed my Masters Degree in Criminal Justice from Lindenwood University. Ironic, yes I know! 🙂 I went through a lot of emotional and mental instability in my mid to late 20's and being my independent self, I didn't reach out for help when I needed it the most. In 6 months I lost 3 grandparents, 2 of which passed away on my wedding day, put my dog to sleep, and left my husband. I literally was so lost and searching for answers because for once in my life I had no idea what to do or how to handle everything that I was feeling. I started hanging out with the wrong crowd and literally just like that, addiction had me hook, line, and sinker - with no end in sight. It took years of battling my own self before coming to the realization that I deserved so much better than what I was giving myself. I didn't deserve this and neither did my family. It took going to prison and completing a 6 month treatment before something clicked. I honestly could not tell you what it was, but something happened and everything finally just made sense. I am from St. Louis and I decided that I needed to give myself a chance to start over and decided it was time to move, so I home-planned to Journey & Peace House Family and I have been in Kansas City since. I have been home for 8 months now, sober for 18 months and I couldn't be happier with the way things are going in my life. I have an amazing job as a Case Manager with Reconciliation Services where I get to interact with clients everyday and help them become more self-sufficient in their lives. I have my own place to call home and have an absolutely amazing group of genuine friends that are the best support anyone could ask for. My relationship with my family is better than I could have ever expected. They never gave up! I owe a huge thanks to Journey to New Life for making all this possible and pushing me to become the best version of my new found self. I will forever be in debt to you all!" "Always know that in order to be in recovery you have to know what you are recovering from. Our weaknesses are just our strengths that are waiting to be found. Face up, you got this! " 📆 ❤️

She brings so much more to our program than we could have anticipated and she does it all with love and humor. This week she taught our community members at Peace and Journey House basic car maintenance. She’s eager to share all of her skills with clients. Her coworkers describe her this way: " Some one who is so compassionate, intelligent, and truly carries the values of Journey to everyone she meets." “She is an amazing friend and teacher, so selfless and reliable "Candy is my best friend!, I trust her judgment, she is the most loyal person i know, she is smart...funny!, she is so knowledgeable, hard working, loving... i can go on and on. Connections magazine, fall 2017: sisters walk with women rebuilding their lives after prison at journey house.

Connections • Helping the Dear Family

While other halfway homes have security cameras, on-site parole officers, and around-the-clock security, Journey House has Sister Martha — greeting, hugging and listening to all — who helps provide the security these women want. She further fosters well-being by leading a 12-step program for these women and others in the community.

Fifteen women reside at Journey House for up to 90 days. Since its opening in September 2015, over 200 women have called it their home.

Journey House Gives Female Ex-Cons A Fresh Start

It’s tough starting a new life after being in prison. Although there are many programs to help, a lot of them focus on male ex-cons but don’t do much for women making the transition. Journey House in Kansas City, Missouri, is giving these women — who have nowhere else to go — a place to belong and a fresh start.

Journey to New Life

Section title.

Journey to New Life is a community based organization committed to serving formerly incarcerated women returning to the community. Each of their services targets women at a specific stage in the reentry process, helping to ease the transition during their first year and work toward a permanent return. They operate the Journey House and the Peace House, serving up to 17 women at a time through residential services, guidance and counseling during the first four months of the reintegration process. Residents work directly with peer support managers and social services case workers to address individual needs and reach a point of self sufficiency. Additionally, Journey to New Life offers emergency assistance to all returning women, equipping them with basic necessities and comforts in the days following release. The organization also has programs dedicated to rapid rehousing, reentry and employment services. For more information about eligibility or availability of services, contact them directly.

Testimonials

Take a look at some of our testimonials from the past. These are great reminders of success stories. There is a chance for change!

"My name is Brian, I came to the maple street house in 2017. I was living a life of drinking, drugs, and I found myself homeless. I was lost, broken with no hope. I came to the maple house, found a sponsor, and worked the 12 steps of AA. I have been clean for four years now. Today my life is full of joy, and I work to help other addicts like me."

"so, here's my big shout out, to the place that saved my life from drinking and drugs and more importantly self. it showed me a program i still use today. it also gave me the environment and time to get mentally sober, i am still working on me which will be a lifelong process. it's been years since a drink or drug sounded like a good idea and the people that know me would tell you that's a miracle. so, if you're struggling out there there's a place in independence mo. where miracles happen. thank you, maple house.", "my name is lester, i started using drugs and alcohol at an early age which ultimately paved the path for me to do a lot of prison time, as well as the loss of all contact with my children. drugs controlled my life until i was 50 years old. when i got to the maple house, they showed me love and tolerance and they loved me until i could love myself i got a sponsor, worked the steps, and followed direction., then i started to see my life was changing dramatically. i've been sober for 6 and a 1/2 years by continuing to do the simple things i was taught. i am now the supervisor at a substance abuse treatment facility. because of the maple house my life is amazing today.".
