How to Look Up a Travel Trailer VIN

How Do I Check A VIN Number On A Travel Trailer?

If you have ever bought a new car, you probably checked the VIN record to get a basic history of the vehicle.

This is a very important step since a vehicle’s damage and accident history may impact it’s safety or future maintenance. You also want to make sure you’re not buying a stolen vehicle.

Can you get the same history for a travel trailer? Do travel trailers even have VINs?

Just like normal cars, travel trailers and RVs have a VIN that you can use to get a basic history of the camper, including insurance claims about damage, theft, or accidents. The VIN for a travel trailer is the same as for a car; a unique number specific to that travel trailer or RV.

In this article, I’m going to cover what a VIN is and what information you can get when looking up a VIN, as well as how to find and look up the VIN for your travel trailer.

What is a VIN

Understanding Your RV’s Vehicle Identification Number

All street-legal vehicles, including cars, motorcycles and travel trailers, are required by law to have a VIN (Vehicle Identification Number).

Every road vehicle that was made after 1977 has one. Also, VIN numbers were not standardized before 1981, so if your travel trailer was made in 1980 or earlier, it might not have a VIN.

The National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA) defines the VIN format for all classes of vehicles.

These numbers are 17 alphanumeric characters long and therefore, they include a mix of numbers and letters.

The VIN is essential for identifying one trailer from another and has six different parts:

  • 1: World Manufacturer Index (WMI):  Where the vehicle was built (first character) and the manufacturer (second and third characters).
  • 2: Manufacturer Specification Data:  The trailer’s model series, engine (if applicable) and body type (fourth through eighth characters)
  • 3: Check Digit:  U.S. Department of Transportation authenticity digit that verifies the VIN (ninth character).
  • 4: Model Year:  Model year of the camper (tenth character).
  • 5: Plant Location:  Where the vehicle was built or assembled (eleventh character).
  • 6: Vehicle Unique Number:  The last six characters make up the vehicle’s serial number.

Are The VIN And Serial Number The Same Thing?

No. As noted above, the serial number is a part of the VIN (the last six characters), but the full VIN is the unique number assigned to that particular travel trailer. The serial number is not as unique.

How To Tell The Year Of Your Travel Trailer

How Do I Find Out The Year Of My Travel Trailer?

We discussed above that the tenth alphanumeric character in your travel trailer’s VIN signifies the model year of your trailer.

However, it’s not so simple since it’s only one character. Plus, it can be a letter.

Refer to the chart below to find out what letter or number your VIN should have based on the year it was made.

Note that there are some alphabetical letters missing – this is probably due to their visual similarity with numbers (“I looks like the number 1, and “O” and “Q” look like zeros, which are also excluded).

As you can see for trailers that were manufactured in the 1980s and with campers made between 2010 and now, there is an overlap.

However, there is a 30-year difference, so it should be obvious that your trailer was built in 2018 instead of 1988, for example.

How Do I Get A VIN Number For My Vintage Travel Trailer?

If the travel trailer or RV you’re buying is a vintage model and was manufactured before 1981, it might not have a VIN, or the wear-and-tear over the years may have worn down the sticker so that it is illegible.

If the seller or dealer doesn’t have documentation (such as the title) with the VIN on it, they may need to apply with your state’s DMV to have a new VIN issued.

If you already own the trailer, this application would be your responsibility.

The process to get a new VIN issued will depend on your state, so you should start by checking with a local DMV office to find out what that process is.

Generally, you will need to complete and file an application for a new VIN, prove your ownership of the trailer (i.e. a bill of sale), and have any state-required inspections or tests completed.

What Does a VIN Check Show

What Does A RV VIN Check Show?

It’s always important to check the record for a travel trailer’s VIN before you buy it, even if you’re buying from a dealer.

The vehicle history report will show you key information that may impact the trailer’s safety, maintenance, or even its value.

When you get your VIN report, look for key, camper-related vehicle activity like:

  • Collisions and accidents  are one of the most important things to look for when you run a VIN check. Insurance companies and police stations report accidents and the VIN numbers of the vehicles involved, so the trailer’s history report will reflect what it’s been through. Minor accidents aren’t too big of a deal, but you’ll probably want to avoid campers that have sustained serious frame or structural damage or RVs where the airbags have been deployed.
  • Airbag safety is another thing  to look at if you’re buying an RV with airbags, since airbags are commonly recalled and defective ones can be incredibly dangerous if deployed in a crash. By checking the trailer’s VIN, you can find out if the airbags have been recalled and if they have, your dealership should replace them for free.
  • Service and repair information  is also listed on a vehicle history report. Although not all services are recorded, most major ones are. If your trailer was ever flooded, a VIN check will let you know – be wary of buying any vehicle that was flooded.
  • Odometer rollbacks are something  to look for when buying an RV. If the reading from the VIN check is higher than the reading on your RV’s odometer, it could mean the odometer was rolled back and it may be unreliable.
  • Recall details may not be relevant for most campers, but you should check the vehicle history report just in case. If there are recalls, check to make sure they have been repaired or replaced before you buy.
  • Title information is another thing  to look out for. If the title is listed as salvaged, it means that the trailer was in an accident and the insurance company declared it a total loss. Someone would have repaired the trailer and acquired a salvage title to register the trailer. If the title is junked, the trailer is legally unsafe to drive on U.S. roads.

How To Find Your Trailer’s VIN Number

Although every travel trailer and RV is assigned a VIN at the point of manufacture, it’s labeled in different places on different campers and there’s no standard location.

Generally speaking, the VIN for a travel trailer on the camper’s trailer tongue, frame rail near the hitch, or on the Federal certification label.

The government requires a trailer to have a Federal certification label to show that the trailer complies with motor vehicle standards, and shows the manufacturer’s same, the trailer’s VIN, and other information such as weight ratings and cold tire inflation pressures.

The VIN is usually on a sticker and some typical places to find it on an RV trailer are:

  • Steering column
  • Vehicle firewall
  • Radiator support bracket
  • Driver’s door frame
  • Inside wheel arch
  • Machined pad on front of engine
  • Front left corner near the bottom of the sidewall

How To Check A Trailer VIN Number

You should always verify that the VIN on the trailer’s title matches the VIN on the actual vehicle before buying it. Follow these steps to find it.

  • Step 1:  Park the trailer in an open area where you’ll be able to see every part of the camper, from numerous angles. You may need a flashlight, since the VIN could be located on the underside of the trailer.
  • Step 2:  The trailer tongue at the front of the trailer is a common location for the VIN sticker. Look at the metal bars that attach to your towing vehicle’s trailer hitch.
  • Step 3:  Another common place for the VIN sticker is the thick, heavy bars that frame the base of the trailer. Walk around the trailer and check the sides and undersides of each frame bar, and check the front and rear bumpers as well.
  • Step 4:  If you still haven’t found the VIN, it’s time to look inside. You might find the VIN on or near the control panel that directs the trailer’s interior systems, or in the door frame.
  • Step 5:  Write down the 17-digit VIN once you find it, and consider noting where it’s located so that you don’t have to hunt for it in the future.

RVs Might Have Multiple VINs

RVs Might Have Multiple VINs

If you’re searching for the VIN on your RV, be careful because many RVs have two VINs.

This is because most RV manufacturers build their campers on chassis that were manufactured by a third party (who assigned a VIN to the incomplete vehicle), then the RV manufacturer incorporates the RV into the incomplete chassis and assigns a VIN to the completed camper.

So, Forest River might buy a chassis from Chevy or Ford to build their motorhomes, and the motorhome will have a VIN from Forest River as well as from Chevy or Ford.

How To Get A Report For Your Trailer’s VIN

After locating the VIN on the trailer, there are two ways to get a vehicle history report for it.

There are several online VIN check services, but they often don’t have reports for travel trailers. Your best bet is one of the following:

  • Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV):  Call a local DMV office and provide them with the VIN to request a report. Some states offer this service online as well, and may require a small fee for the full report.
  • Dealership:  Contact a dealership that is operated by the trailer’s manufacturer. The type of report and amount of information you can get may vary, but the dealership should be able to help you contact the appropriate department at the manufacturer for the information you need.

How To Keep Accurate Records For Your Travel Trailer

When you own a travel trailer or RV, you should keep records for future owners and your own organization.

This will help with resale value as well as trust with potential buyers down the road; if you have accurate and specific information about what’s happened to the camper throughout its life, they’ll be more confident buying it.

What kinds of records should you keep? Here’s my take:

  • 1: Keep all documents from your purchase . File the title, owner’s manual and any other records from when you bought the trailer, especially the bill of sale.
  • 2 : Report and document any damage . It’s important to keep a record of things that happen to the trailer, such as accidents or damage like fires, flooding, or even structural damage (such as if a tree fell on your camper).
  • 3: Report even minor accidents to the police . Even if the damage was unsubstantial and you won’t press charges, filing a police report will ensure the damage will be reflected on the trailer’s VIN, and helps your state keep accurate records of the camper’s condition.
  • 4: Record any sales, loans or thefts involving the trailer . Always report any thefts or burglaries to the police, of course. You should also keep a file of any loans against the camper and retain a copy of the bill of sale, if you sell it. You wouldn’t want to be held responsible for something that happened to or with the trailer after you’ve sold it! Be sure to follow the correct legal channels whenever your trailer changes hands, and verify that the new owner updates the registration under their name.
  • 5: Keep record of any upgrades or maintenance . While insurance companies and local police are certain to keep records of any accidents or damage involving your trailer, the only entity responsible for keeping track of major services or upgrades is you. Try to also keep a schedule or record of any professional cleaning services you have done, since this tells future buyers that you’ve kept the camper in good shape. Plus, upgrades and modifications you’ve made can help increase the resale value if you have a record of them.

Summary About Looking Up A Travel Trailer’s VIN

I hope this article has helped you with the information you need to find a travel trailer or RV’s VIN without too much hunting! It helps that campers have VINs just like any other road vehicle, and that they are constructed the same.

Remember, it’s very important to check the VIN of a camper before you buy it, since the report can give you vital information that the previous owner might not know or tell.

Once you own a camper, it’s also important to keep accurate records for your own peace of mind as well as to facilitate an easier re-sale if you decide to get rid of the camper down the road.

Owning a motorhome is a dream for many, but if you buy the wrong one, it can turn out to be a nightmare. These vehicles combine the complexity of a motor vehicle and a house. Travel trailers are less complex, but it’s important to get one that’s in a good shape and fits your tow vehicle. With a free VIN check, you can verify the authenticity of the vehicle and quickly identify major changes that may affect its value. If you get a VIN report, you can see the history of the vehicle before you buy it and get a NADA VIN check to tell you the market value of the vehicle. Spending a few dollars now can keep you from making a mistake that will cost you thousands.

RV VIN Lookup – What Is It?

A VIN number is a 17-digit code that is unique to each vehicle and trailer. This code includes information about where and when the vehicle was manufactured, as well as major equipment options. Using a trailer VIN lookup tells you important specs like the length of the trailer, as well as the number of axles.

The last few digits of the VIN is a serial number. While serial numbers repeat, no other vehicle or trailer on the road has the same serial number, manufacturing and equipment digits. Our lookup tool decodes all this information for free, so you can compare the motorhome or trailer with its factory specifications.

Why Should I Look Up an RV VIN?

Motorhomes have two VIN numbers. The number issued by the chassis company tells you about the basic mechanical components. The number issued by the motorhome manufacturer tells you about what was added to turn the chassis into a complete recreational vehicle. Travel trailers also have VINs that contain manufacturer information and specs.

Using our decoder can tell you a lot about a recreational vehicle, whether it’s one you own or one you’re looking to buy. An RV trailer VIN tells you the official length of the trailer, the number of axles, and the hitch type. The chassis VIN gives you information about the chassis size, the engine and the manufacturing year, which is helpful for verifying the vehicle’s construction. The manufacturer’s VIN helps you verify the model, as well as the GCWR, which determines the vehicle’s weight class. This information helps you verify the accuracy of the sale listing, as well as the licenses and insurance you’ll need to get it on the road. After buying a recreational vehicle or trailer, you can use this information to get the right parts for repairs.

How do I look up an RV VIN number?

Before you use our RV lookup tool, you need to find the VIN. While a travel trailer has a single trailer VIN, motorhomes have two VINs. The first VIN is issued by the chassis manufacturer, and the second VIN is issued by the motorhome manufacturer. For example, let’s say you have a Winnebago View. This Class C motorhome started life as a Sprinter chassis, which has a VIN issued by Mercedes Benz. After Winnebago builds the “home” part of the motorhome on top of this chassis, they issue their own VIN number.

When you register or insure your vehicle, you need the motorhome VIN. If you want to learn more about the chassis, including the original engine and transmission, you should look up the chassis manufacturer VIN. Need parts or service for your vehicle? You need the chassis VIN for the vehicle components, like brake pads and oil filters. The motorhome VIN is used for everything added to the chassis, including plumbing, exterior decals and auxiliary power components.

Some manufacturers also use internal codes, like Fleetwood’s “FIN”, or “Fleetwood Identification Number”. These codes don’t have 17 digits and aren’t used for documentation. Instead, they’re only used to order replacement parts directly from the manufacturer.

Placement of the VIN isn’t standardized on recreational vehicles. Here are some places you should check to find the VIN number on your vehicle or trailer.

Motorhome VIN Locations

  • On the front corner of the driver’s side dashboard. The VIN plate is oriented in a way that it can be read through the windshield.
  • On the driver’s or passenger’s door, or on the frame around these doors
  • On the door or walls of an exterior storage compartment
  • In the engine compartment, either on the firewall or somewhere on the engine.
  • On the steering column
  • Under the driver’s side window
  • Next to the gauge cluster

If the number is a part of the original chassis, it’s probably the chassis manufacturer’s ID. This includes the engine, frame and, if the vehicle has a van or truck front end, the dashboard. A firewall number could be either. If the chassis has a van body, it’s from the chassis manufacturer. If the cab is built by the motorhome manufacturer, it’s their ID. All the other tags should be from the motorhome manufacturer. Don’t worry if you aren’t sure which code you have. Our RV VIN decoder is free, so you can type in the number and see which manufacturer issued the number.

Travel Trailers and Campers

  • On the frame next to the tongue, or directly under the propane tanks
  • On a sticker inside an interior cabinet, usually under the kitchen sink
  • Next to the support bars on the underside of the trailer
  • On the pillars of the entry door
  • Inside the wheel wells
  • Inside a closet or the heater compartment
  • On the pin box of gooseneck hitch trailers

With trailer VIN number lookup, there’s only one number to worry about. Remember that the VIN is 17 digits long. If you find a number that’s longer or shorter, it’s a serial number issued by the manufacturer for internal use.

What about truck camper VIN lookup? They’re legally considered cargo, not vehicles, so they don’t have a VIN. This eliminates most of the paperwork tied to vehicle and travel trailer VIN lookup, so there’s no way to get a detailed history on this type of camper.

Once you have the VIN, you can use our site for a free trailer VIN check or recreational vehicle check. From there, you can order a complete history report on the trailer or vehicle.

Where to find VIN on a vehicle?

What will an RV history report tell you?

The VIN acts as an identifier for the vehicle or trailer in official documents. By pulling information from available records, our VIN report builds a history of the vehicle, from when it rolled off of the factory line to today. Here’s what you’ll find in this report:

  • Past vehicle registrations
  • Insurance claims for accidents, natural disasters and other damage
  • Outstanding liens
  • If the vehicle or trailer was stolen, and if it was recovered
  • Odometer reporting discrepancies
  • Market value using NADA VIN lookup for accurate pricing

This information helps you determine a fair offer and helps you avoid lemons and vehicles that might be repossessed. Using our reports can save you a considerable amount of time and guesswork when hunting down your next camping vehicle, and gives you the peace of mind that what you buy doesn’t have any hidden problems.

RV and Motorhome VIN Decoder

Find detailed information by Motorhome VIN Number with build sheet for free.

The opportunity to use the Motorhome VIN decoder will let you select the right variants of the models for rent or for personal use. The VIN number describes every single vehicle despite the fact that the code looks like a senseless series of numbers and letters. However, once you put it into the corresponding field of the decoder, you will be surprised by the amount of information you get. Every symbol from the code determines a specific thing. The US National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration determines the rules of generating the number and controls the implementation of the rule.

Nowadays, the VIN code consists of 17 characters. The typical place of the number is on the board under the windshield on the driver's side. In order to avoid Motorhome thefts, the number is placed on the parts of the car. And these parts are non-removable and they cannot be changed on your own without the notice in the registration card.

Each Motorhome trailer or RV will have a VIN code that will be unique for this very car. However, there are several models such as the Truck Campers, the Cab-overs and the Slide-ins that have a serial number instead of the VIN number . This fact shouldn't worry you as the manufacturer doesn't break the law. It's just the peculiarity of a few models of the Motorhome vehicles.

One more thing to pay attention to is the presence of several codes on one vehicle. This happens because the chassis is produced by one company that assigns one code while the body of the car is made by another company that assigns another code for the parts.

RV VIN Decoder

If you want to buy a Motorhome, pay attention to the code that is located on the driver's site under the windshield. It's called a finished VIN that you can decipher with the RV VIN decoder. This code is required in case you become the first owner of the vehicle and the retailer gives the car to you. If you buy the already used car, you will need the VIN code to check if the RV is not stolen or it is sold legally.

Let's consider what you can do with the number and how you can decode it. The number consists of 17 characters and it's assigned by the RV manufacturer. This code includes the data about the model, the engine specs, the equipment of the car, the floor plan and all the optional customization of the Motorhome. The number of the RV is similar to the one of any other trailer that you observe elsewhere.

A typical VIN can look like the following: 5B4MP67G123353230 .

What you can find out with the decoder:

  • The first number and the next two letters determine the manufacturer;
  • 5B4 stands for Workhorse;
  • M stands for the type of the brake system;
  • P stands for the type of the chassis type;
  • 6 stands for the code of the model;
  • The next symbol indicates the body type;
  • G stands for the engine type, here it means 8.1L V8 OHV 16V;
  • The next is the check figure that prevents any changes in the code;
  • 2 means the model year of the vehicle , here we have 2002;
  • Number 3 determines that the Motorhome was produced in Union City Indiana, United States;
  • And the last figures mean the serial number.

Roughly, we can break the code into four parts. But if you use the Motorhome decoder, it will be much easier and faster to decipher the code than doing it on your own.

RV VIN lookup: how to check your vehicle’s history

  • Buying and selling tips

Owning an RV changes the way you travel. It gives you freedom and the joy of exploring the world. Since the launch of the first automobiles, engineers started to develop motorhomes that soon became popular in the market. With more than 100 years of history, today, RVs have everything you need: from spacious kitchens to solar-powered gadgets.

Most people use their RV no more than 3-4 weeks a year. Buying a new one is a large investment, therefore, many drivers choose a second-hand vehicle to save some money.

carVertical VIN lookup allows you to check the history of any RV, learn a lot of valuable information, and decide if a vehicle is worth the bargain. You need to enter an RV’s VIN number on the carVertical platform to see past damages, mileage rollbacks, registration changes, technical specifications, photos, and more.

Where can I find an RV VIN?

Manufacturers put the VIN on irreplaceable parts of a vehicle, so it can’t be removed or damaged. Here are common places where you can expect finding a VIN on your trailer or camper:

  • On the tongue
  • Near the axles
  • Inside of the doorframe
  • Inside the closet
  • Under the propane tanks
  • Under the front or rear end of the trailer
  • On the entry screen door
  • Under the sink
  • In an outside storage compartment
  • Inside a wheel well

An RV VIN number can also be found in a vehicle’s registration documents or insurance. Make sure that the number on an RV matches the one in the papers. Wrongdoers often forge the VIN so the new owner can’t learn about its history.

How to find the VIN number on a vintage travel trailer?

Until 1981, there was no internationally recognized VIN standard, therefore, different manufacturers used different formats. While you can easily decipher the contemporary VIN number of any vehicle, it may be a tricky task with a vintage travel trailer.

Many trailers manufactured before 1981 may not have a VIN stamped. However, make sure to check these places:

  • On the trailer’s tongue
  • On the frame rail close to the hitch
  • On the metal parts of the frame

RV VIN lookup: how does it work?

VIN stands for “vehicle identification number,” which is a unique sequence of letters and numbers assigned to your RV by its manufacturer. This number doesn’t change throughout a vehicle’s lifetime and helps to identify it even after many years.

To reveal your RV’s history, you need to enter its VIN into carVertical’s VIN decoder . It will verify that a VIN is correct and show you basic information, such as make and the country of manufacturing.

If a VIN is legitimate, you can get a full history report and learn a lot about an RV’s past.

Why should you look up an RV VIN?

An RV VIN will tell you everything you need to know about a vehicle before making a purchase decision.

A technical inspection can only reveal mechanical flaws and evaluate a vehicle’s condition. However, it can’t always reveal past damages , theft records , or mileage rollbacks . If you’re planning to buy a low-priced used vehicle, you need to be extra careful.

VIN Decoder

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is an operating administration of the United States Department of Transportation and is the federal agency responsible for improving motor vehicle safety on United States roadways. As part of our mission, NHTSA develops certain standards for motor vehicle safety and reporting. Under NHTSA’s regulations, each motor vehicle must contain a vehicle identification number, also known as a VIN, which is a 17-character number that encodes specific information about the particular vehicle.

On NHTSA.gov, you can query a particular vehicle’s VIN to identify specific information encoded in the number. NHTSA’s VIN decoder is publicly accessible at: https://vpic.nhtsa.dot.gov/decoder/ .

Using NHTSA's VIN Decoder to Identify a Vehicle’s Plant of Manufacture

Among the information NHTSA's VIN decoder provides is information about the vehicle’s plant of manufacture. After searching a VIN, you'll see the build plant and country for the vehicle in question. This is a two-step process:

Step 1: Go to https://vpic.nhtsa.dot.gov/decoder/ and enter the full VIN into NHTSA’s VIN decoder, then click Decode VIN .

Screenshot of a text box to enter VIN, model year. Button reads Decode VIN.

Step 2: Refer to the field at the bottom of the page result, which expressly lists the build plant and country for the searched vehicle.

Screenshot of vehicle detail results page, arrow pointing to text at the button listing plant information.

Note:  The information displayed through the VIN decoder is reported by the manufacturer. If you have further questions regarding this information, please contact the vehicle manufacturer. In addition, more information may be available on a label affixed to the vehicle. See 49 C.F.R. Part 583.

How to Decode an RV VIN Number

All RV vehicles manufactured since 1981 will feature a 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN).

Since 1981, VINs have been standardized to the same format so that certain characters and sets of characters contain important information about a particular vehicle.

The RV’s VIN can be used to quickly decode information about the vehicle, such as:

  • Model year, make, model, and manufacturer.
  • Location of manufacture and the manufacturing plant.
  • Body type and styling options.
  • Details about the engine and transmission.
  • Additional features and add-ons.

The RV VIN can also be used for:

  • Ordering Vehicle History Reports.
  • Getting the value of a specific RV.
  • Finding RV recalls.
  • Searching for compatible parts for the specific RV year and model.
  • Learning about the vehicle’s ownership history.
  • Finding out the vehicle’s accident and repair history.
  • Getting free, customized insurance quotes.
  • Checking if the RV is stolen.

Whether you have an RV vehicle you own or are looking to buy one, decoding the VIN and using the VIN for a variety of tasks can come in handy.

Our free RV VIN decoder is here for you to get started.

Simply enter your RV VIN into the search bar above to check the global database. We’ll run the search and return all the pertinent information we can find.

If you have an older VIN from a vehicle that was produced prior to 1981, the VIN decoder may not work.

Where to find a VIN on an RV?

Your RV VIN will typically be found in a handful of locations on the vehicle. The common ones include:

  • On a VIN plate attached to the dashboard.
  • Stamped onto the frame.
  • Near the engine.
  • On the door jamb.

Additionally, the RV VIN can be found on your DMV and insurance paperwork, such as the:

  • Registration card.
  • Vehicle title.
  • Insurance policy documents.
  • Insurance ID cards.

Note that certain RVs might have multiple VINs depending on the configuration of the vehicle.

Some VINs may describe an entire vehicle with an engine, while other RV VINs may be for the chassis or incomplete vehicle.

Is that used RV you have your eye on safe to drive and legal to own?

You may think that you are doing everything right, like checking Carfax. But some used RV retailers are selling unsafe RVs to unsuspecting people.

There is good news, though! There are legitimate ways to check out used RVs before purchasing them. We'll tell you how, and answer even more VIN FAQ.

A Real RVer Who Learned the Hard Way

One of RV Lifestyle Facebook followers, Christine, shared a horror story recently. She bought a 2011 Tiffin and thought everything was fine since the Carfax said the vehicle's VIN was clear. Little did she know that it was not fine, and she ended up with a $57,000 loss!

Here is her story:

In March 2019, she and her husband purchased a 2011 Tiffin Allergo Bus from a company called Northern Kentucky Auto Sales. It took about nine months for them to get the title to the vehicle, which occurred right before their leaving to go to Florida for the winter.

The title was issued in Pennsylvania, even though the RV was originally purchased by the sales company in Texas. The couple went through several legal processes to secure the title, and Indiana would not title the vehicle. The Indiana Attorney General denied the titling.

Why Would They Deny It, You Ask?

Apparently, the RV was sold at a Texas auction in Texas and was only supposed to be used for parts!

This was particularly upsetting to the couple because despite the rig being unsafe to drive, the couple had been driving it all over Alabama. They had already put 15,000 miles on the rig!

Once the couple discovered that it was not allowed to be driven, they stored it in Florida and hired an Indiana attorney to get their money back. They wanted what they paid and to give the RV back to the seller.

In the end, the dealership took the rig back but only paid a portion of what it was sold for. Overall, the couple lost $57,000 in the deal and learned some important life lessons.

Christine shared this on social media to warn other people from doing the same thing.

Do not find yourself in the same predicament. The following are ways to ensure that you are buying an RV with a clear title and one that is safe to drive.

What Is a VIN?

Why an RV VIN Lookup Is Essential If Buying Used

A VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) is a unique 17-digit number that every road vehicle made after 1977 has. The VIN number usually comes as a mix of letters and numbers and can be found somewhere on the vehicle.

VINs are assigned to every road vehicle, such as cars, RVs, trailers fifth wheels, and any others you can think of. The vehicle sold is recorded on the title associated with that VIN number.

Why Is It Important to Check the VIN?

Christine's story provided one reason to check the VIN: roadworthiness. But it's not the only reason you should check your RV VIN.

The VIN records can show you:

  • If the RV is road-worthy
  • If the RV was stolen
  • If the seller is lying (or ignorant) about specifications
  • Maintenance and service history
  • Recalls on the RV

If there have been recalls on the RV, ask the seller if the problem has been fixed already. It's best to verify their answer by checking recall information on recalls.gov or NHTSA . Those resources can help identify unrepaired RVs affected by recalls.

How Do I Find My RV VIN?

The VIN may be located on a sticker or as an engraving on the vehicle's metal.  On a motorhome, it’s typically found in one of two locations…

  • Many vehicles have the VIN located inside the driver’s side door and can only be seen when the door is ajar.
  • Many RV VINs are located on the lower-left-hand corner of the dashboard, in front of the steering wheel. You can look at the number through the windshield on the driver’s side of the vehicle.

If you do not find the VIN in those two spots, you can also try looking in front of the engine block. You can also consult the owner’s manual if it is available.

Where Is the VIN on a 5th Wheel or Travel Trailer?

The VIN can be trickier to find on a 5th-wheel or travel trailer. The first place to look is on the roadside (driver side) front corner of the towable RV, near the bottom of the sidewall. This is where it is required to be.

However, VINs on older towables tend to wear or fall off. If you can't locate your trailer VIN near that location, look near the hitch or pin box. If nothing is there, it's time to check the entry door frame and start opening cabinets. You may find the VIN in one of those locations.

Can I Check an RV VIN Free?

check the rv vin

Good ol' Google is a great place to start. There are multiple free resources you can choose from to look up VIN numbers, including EpicVIN and FAXVIN .

Simply google “free VIN decoder” or “free VIN lookup” and a list of free resources will populate. Select one, enter your VIN, and get an instant report that usually outlines the manufacturer, brand, make and model, body style, engine size assembly plant, and model year.

This information allows you to double-check that the VIN matches the vehicle you're looking to buy. Some also provide a full vehicle history report.

In fact, that’s what Christine did when her title was denied. When she googled the VIN, she found out about the Texas auction sale.

Check the RV VIN at the DMV

Another way to check the VIN is to go directly to the DMV. The DMV can often run the number for you to let you know if the vehicle is legally open for purchase.

How Do I Decode My RV VIN Number?

Each number of the VIN represents specific information. To easily decode the RV VIN, simply enter the VIN into the NHTSA VIN Decoder . When you click “Decode VIN,” it will generate a report of vehicle details that you can export to a PDF.

You can also manually decode the RV VIN. The 10th digit is the trickiest one to interpret, but we'll explain that further after this breakdown of each number of the VIN:

  • 1st Digit:  Country of origin of the vehicle
  • 2nd Digit:  Manufacturer of the vehicle
  • 3rd Digit: Make of the vehicle
  • 4th Digit:  Line or series of vehicle
  • 5th & 6th Digit:  Body style of the vehicle
  • 7th Digit:  Type of restraint system found in the vehicle
  • 8th Digit:  Type of Engine in the Vehicle
  • 9th Digit:  Check Digit
  • 10th Digit:  Year the vehicle was manufactured*
  • 11th Digit:  Plant where the vehicle was manufactured or assembled
  • 12th-17th Digits:  RV’s unique serial number

*As mentioned, the 10th digit is the trickiest to interpret because it has three possible numeral and alphabetical representations depending on the year the RV was built.

Models manufactured after 2009 are represented by letters corresponding to years. So, A=2010, B=2011, etc. Models manufactured before 2000 are represented by letters corresponding to years in reverse order. So, Z=1999, Y=1998, etc.

Models manufactured from 2000-2009 are represented as a numeral of the year. So, 0=2000, 1=2001, 2=2002, etc.

Should You Trust Carfax?

While Carfax offers a great service, it should only be used as a starting point in your search for a reliable used vehicle. The downside to Carfax is that it only contains information that was reported. A vehicle with a clean Carfax report does not mean it is truly safe and can be properly titled.

There is nothing wrong with using Carfax. Just make sure it is not your only source of information in a used vehicle purchase. That's why, no matter what information you find in an RV VIN lookup, we always recommend you get an RV inspection…

This knowledge empowers buyers to mitigate risks, verify authenticity, and negotiate with confidence ensuring they invest in an RV that aligns with their expectations. Conversely, sellers benefit from VIN lookup by showcasing transparency, building trust with buyers through accurate representation of the RV’s history and specifications, expediting sales, and establishing fair market values.

In essence, VIN lookup acts as a catalyst for fair and transparent RV transactions. It enables buyers to make informed choices while providing sellers with a means to accurately represent their RVs, fostering trust and credibility in the marketplace. This tool becomes pivotal in reducing risks, enhancing confidence, and ensuring both parties engage in transactions built on transparency and reliability.

Understanding the RV VIN Number

What is an rv vin number and how does it differ from the chassis vin.

The RV VIN,  also known as the “coach VIN,” is a separate VIN assigned by the RV manufacturer. It pertains to the RV-specific body and living quarters built on the chassis. It includes details about the RV’s construction, features, amenities, and interior specifications.

The chassis VIN is typically assigned by the chassis manufacturer to the underlying RV chassis or frame. It contains information about the vehicle’s mechanical components, engine specifications, transmission, and more.

Why is the RV VIN Important?

The RV VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) is crucial for several reasons:

Identification : The VIN serves as a unique identifier for each recreational vehicle (RV). It contains information about the RV’s manufacturer, model, year of production, and other specific details. This identification helps in registration, insurance, and any legal transactions involving the RV.

Ownership Verification : The VIN helps verify ownership of the RV. It allows potential buyers to check the vehicle’s history, including any accidents, recalls, or theft records. This information is vital for making informed purchasing decisions.

Maintenance and Repairs : The VIN provides essential details about the RV’s specifications, such as engine type, transmission, and other components. This information is valuable for maintenance and repair purposes, ensuring that the correct parts and procedures are used.

Safety and Compliance : The VIN may contain information about safety recalls or compliance issues related to the RV. Manufacturers use VINs to track and address safety concerns promptly, ensuring the well-being of RV owners and passengers.

Resale Value : Having a VIN allows for accurate documentation of the RV’s history, including its condition, maintenance records, and any upgrades or modifications. This documentation can positively impact the RV’s resale value by providing potential buyers with transparency and confidence in their purchase.

Why is RV VIN Lookup and Check important on an RV?

It can reveal whether the vin has been tampered with or altered.

Some common issues associated with an incorrect or altered VIN include:

Title and ownership problems : A fraudulent or altered VIN can lead to title discrepancies or ownership disputes, potentially causing legal and financial complications for both buyers and sellers.

Hidden damage or accident history : By verifying the RV’s VIN, you can uncover hidden damage or accident history that may not be disclosed by the seller. This information helps you assess the RV’s condition and find the right vehicle.

Stolen vehicle identification : A VIN check can reveal if an RV has been reported as stolen, protecting you from unknowingly purchasing stolen property and potential legal consequences.

RV VIN check help prevent fraud

RV VIN check plays a crucial role in preventing fraud when buying or selling an RV. It helps in the following ways:

Authenticity verification : By checking the RV’s VIN against official records, you can ensure that the vehicle’s identity is legitimate and not compromised.

Avoiding VIN cloning : Fraudsters may attempt to clone a VIN from a different RV to make a stolen or salvaged vehicle appear legitimate. A VIN check helps detect such fraudulent activities and protects you from falling victim to scams.

Ensuring accurate vehicle information : Verifying the RV’s VIN ensures that the information provided by the seller matches the official records. It helps identify any discrepancies or false claims made about the vehicle.

RV VIN check helps detect fraudulent activities

Performing a VIN check offers several advantages when buying or selling an RV. It is a proactive step that safeguards against potential issues, protects you from fraud, and provides peace of mind during the buying or selling process. It ensures transparency, authenticity, and accurate representation of the RV’s history and specifications.

Is There a Carfax For RVs? (How To Check RV History)

Getting a used vehicle’s history. This is important when you want to avoid paying more money for repairs or title and other problems. Getting a history of the used vehicle makes sure you know what is what and that you are getting the vehicle as represented.

There is a company called RVchex.com and for a $25 fee, you should get a little history on the RV you want to buy. However, it is said that you should be able to use Carfax for your RV check as long as you have a VIN. Just be careful as all information may not be accurate

What is Carfax?

What-is-Carfax

For those that have only heard the name Carfax and do not know what it is, this is a company that will research the history of a used car through its VIN. The company uses over 130,000 sources in both Canada and the United States to get the information you want.

However, this company is only good for cars and light trucks dating from 1981 and onward and has a 17-character VIN. The thing to be careful about when using this service is that the report is limited to the information that has been reported to those sources.

Then the company does not inspect the cars nor does it always provide accurate information. They make no guarantee about the condition of the car and fraud can still take place after you get a report.

Is There a Carfax For RVs?

Is-There-a-Carfax-For-RVs

Yes, there is at least one. This one is called RVchex.com and it is a product offered by iMobile Solutions, Inc., a subsidiary of Sparta Commercial Services, Inc. This company basically does the same thing as Carfax, just for RVs.

You will need a VIN to get the report and when you are ready to order a search, you will have to pay $24.95 for one and $49.95 for up to 3 searches. It is best to contact them as there may be some regional limitations for their searches.

On their VIN search page, you will see this message in red- “RVchex® does not provide data for RVs registered in the state(s): OR.” it looks like the state of Oregon does not allow these types of research reports.

On the company’s home page, you will see these words as well-

“ RVchex® searches government data for over 90 types of vehicle title problems

RVchex® searches over 28 million Salvage or Total Loss records”

Carfax Report For RV

Carfax-Report-For-RV

It has been said that you can use Carfax to do a history on an RV. When we checked the company’s website, all you need to do a search is a VIN or a license plate number.

Whether this will work for an RV or trailer remains to be seen. The company does not mention doing searches for RVs but they may. We have come across one website that says they do. But you have to sign up and pay a fee to access the information.

The problem that many people have with using Carfax and similar organizations is that they think these reports are the last word on a used vehicle.

This is not so as Carfax only provides basic information that may be inaccurate or incomplete. You would have to look at these reports from Carfax or similar companies with a grain of salt as the information in those reports are unverified.

One problem area for Carfax, etc., reports is that they have no way of knowing if the odometer reading is correct or not.

Using Carfax For RVs

Using-Carfax-For-RVs

You can use this company for an RV’s history, etc., but you may be paying a lot of money to get it done. The fee has been reported at $39.99 and that may just be the base fee. Your costs may vary depending on the service you are ordering.

There is another company called DMV.org and they are not associated with any State DMV office, or other government entity. They are a private company that does for RVs what Carfax does for cars.

The company’s landing page has the spot for your VIN but it does not state how much it will cost for the search. We searched their website but no mention of the cost is made.

If you are wanting to know the value of the used RV you are researching, there is no Kelly Bluebook to help you. You have to go to the NADA (National Automobile Dealers’ Association) Guides by JD Power to get help with the value of different used RVs .

That guide will help you with travel trailer value as well.

Is There a Carfax For Travel Trailers?

Is-There-a-Carfax-For-Travel-Trailers

Most likely, you can use any one of the different VIN search companies to find information on a used travel trailer. According to faxvin.com, you can put any VIN in their search box to get some information.

This may work for work for CarFax and RVchex.com as well. Of course, these companies may have a fee for searching your travel trailers VIN and you would have to put the number in their search box before finding out how much a search will cost.

The reports you get and the information in those reports are questionable. The reason for this is that there is no regulation requiring any repair shop to report repairs or selling prices for travel trailers.

Just take these reports with a grain of salt as they only give basic unverifiable information on any vehicle with a VIN.

Some Final Words

Many people use Carfax or one of the other companies we mentioned in this article. As good as they intend to be, do not take their reports verbatim or as an authority.

The information contained within those reports cannot be verified, may be inaccurate, and will not stop fraud from taking place. They won’t know if the owner put sawdust in the transmission or not.

Check this link to see some more reasons why you can’t trust these reports.

How Can I Get a Free VIN Check?

A Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is a unique number assigned to every car and is logged by mechanics, insurance companies and state agencies every time work is performed or ownership changes. This provides a complete history of its past.

The VIN is like an SSN for your vehicle

One of the most stressful aspects of buying a used car is not knowing what secrets lie beneath its paint. A lack of regular maintenance, a history of recalls that haven’t been addressed, or even a history of flood damage can be difficult for most buyers to spot. Fortunately, there’s an easy way to get a look into the past history of a vehicle you’re considering. And, best of all, at least some of it is available for free.

Every new vehicle is assigned a vehicle identification number, or VIN, when it is built. A unique seventeen-digit alphanumeric code that stays with it throughout its life, the VIN is like a Social Security number for your car. Every time the car goes to a dealer or independent shop for repairs or routine maintenance, mechanics log the details into its history by referencing the VIN.

The VIN is like an SSN for your vehicle

Several online services provide ways to easily access this information. Decoding the VIN can tell you whether a crash or flood damage has resulted in a salvage title, or whether the vehicle has been recalled for a safety defect or other issue – and whether that issue has been addressed. You can even find out where the car has previously been registered, which can provide insight into regional factors such as whether it has spent time in a cold climate and was regularly exposed to salt and potential corrosion damage.

“A VIN check is imperative for used car shoppers, as it will let you know if the car has a salvaged or branded title – that is, if the car has been totaled by an insurance company due to extensive damage from an accident, flood, or another event,” said Jim Sharifi, managing editor of U.S. News Best Cars. “Avoiding cars with salvage or branded titles will save consumers some major ownership headaches.”

Free VIN Checks

While a number of well-known companies such as Carfax provide detailed reports you can run yourself for a fee, we found several others that provide varying amounts of historical data for free. All you need to do is enter the VIN on their website, and you’ll get a report in a matter of seconds. Like Carfax, some of these will provide more details for a modest fee. Here’s a quick look at some of the better free options available and what they provide.

VehicleHistory.com has the most free information available, providing useful data that include recalls, safety ratings, original specifications, standard and optional equipment, warranty and more. The site also includes information about what key safety equipment was included when the vehicle was new, fuel economy data, user reviews, common reported problems and links to similar vehicles for sale in your area. If the car goes up for sale, VehicleHistory.com can tell you where, as well as its list price, sale price and the status of its parts and components.

The National Insurance Crime Bureau offers a free VIN check to determine whether a vehicle was ever reported stolen or damaged to the point where it was issued a salvage title. NICB offers up to five free VIN checks from one IP address within a 24-hour period, using data supplied by car insurance companies. As a result, information may not be completely up to date.

VINcheck Pro offers a free report including the year, make and model of the vehicle, along with where it was built, specifications, safety ratings, current value and original price. The site also provides free details on any recalls issued since the vehicle was built and offers a free checklist of items that buyers should check before committing to a purchase. Another handy feature is predicted ownership costs for the next five years, but Vincheck Pro does not include maintenance and ownership history.

Paid VIN Checks

The only way to get the most complete information on a vehicle’s past is to pay for it. The relatively modest cost can be a wise investment, however, saving you a bundle on repairs later by steering you away from an unsavory vehicle.

“Free VIN checks will get you the major red flags, like a salvaged title,” Sharifi said, “but paying for a VIN can get you more details, like how many owners the car has had.”

The VIN is like an SSN for your vehicle

The two largest and best-known providers of paid VIN check reports are AutoCheck and Carfax. In addition to basic information included with free sites, both provide any history of recalls, thefts or crashes and detailed reports on the vehicle, including a description and overall evaluation. You can also learn where it was originally sold and states in which it was previously registered by prior owners. AutoCheck and Carfax reports can dive deep into granular details, including any hail damage, whether the vehicle was leased or has served as a government or police vehicle and whether there is evidence of a rolled-back odometer.

Carfax is a partner of U.S. News, meaning that you can get a free Carfax report on many of the vehicles available through our listings. More thorough reports are available through the Carfax website. A single report costs $44,99, or you can get three for $64.99. For really serious shoppers, a package of five is available for $99.99.

AutoCheck offers basic information for free, including the vehicle's make, model and country where it was built. Paid reports include details about flood, theft or incident damage and assign a numerical score for that specific vehicle so you can compare it to others from that same model year. Paid options include a single report for $24.99 or a bundle of five for $49.99 over a 21-day period.

If you’re buying from a car dealer, remember that many dealers include a free vehicle history report with a vehicle purchase and often have a subscription to Carfax or another service. If the salesperson doesn’t offer one, don’t be afraid to ask. Chances are, they’ll throw in a report if that’s what it takes to close the deal.

Best Free VIN Check Platforms To Get A Vehicle History Report

W hether you’re purchasing a new or used vehicle, it’s necessary to know the vehicle's history. If it’s an older car with more mileage, a Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) will allow you to see the car's history and maintenance reports. Recent reports suggest that the used car market has seen increases of 40% since the beginning of 2021, and with inventory down significantly across all price ranges, buyers are faced with an increased need to understand a potential vehicle’s worth.

The best way to check a car’s history is to use a free VIN lookup service; however, not all of these services are created equal. Some services cater to American and European buyers, while others offer a mobile-friendly platforms that’s unparalleled. There are also services that specialize in comparing private vehicles. Below, we’ll dive into what makes a VIN check critical to the car buying experience, why it’s necessary for any car purchase, and which service may be the best for you.

Best Free VIN Decoder Sites

To understand the best VIN number check sites, we’ve broken down the pros and cons of five of the top services available: EpicVIN, the National Insurance Crime Bureau, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), CARFAX, and Autocheck. We have evaluated each VIN check site and rated them on a scale from 1-10, taking into account factors such as user experience and the services they provide.

Approved by the National Motor Vehicle Title Information System (NMVTIS), EpicVIN offers a comprehensive database of information that can ease the stress of purchasing a used car. Users simply need to enter the VIN number into the VIN Check tool and hit the ‘search’ button. If you don’t have the VIN number, the site also offers a free License Plate Lookup tool, which allows users to view key data by entering a license plate number. In addition to these tools, EpicVIN offers a Chrome Extension that helps customers find the most important information on any website. This tool enables users to see when and where a vehicle was sold, the price, and the main details concerning the vehicle history. Additionally, EpicVIN provides a useful mobile app.

What sets EpicVIN apart from its competitors is the way the reports are presented. Unlike most sites that provide a text-only report, EpicVIN offers reports with key visuals that help users better understand the information. So, when you conduct a VIN lookup for a car history report on EpicVIN, you will see the essential information displayed prominently to help you better comprehend the vehicle’s history.

  • EpicVIN provides a vast database of information that covers millions of vehicles. The data is collected from multiple sources and conveniently presented in one place, providing easy accessibility for users
  • Provides a free preview of basic vehicle information
  • Straightforward refund system
  • Mobile-friendly
  • You can get a subscription for unlimited reports for the price of one report from the competitors
  • Pictures with car’s information details
  • Users have the option to upload a picture of the VIN into the VIN Check tool to generate a report
  • Large database can produce too much information, making it hard for customers to navigate to the important information
  • Limited data on theEuropean vehicle market
  • Limited data on car maintenance

Score: 9/10 EpicVIN offers tremendous value for its reports and comes with an extensive list of information including the number of previous owners, flood damage, odometer readings, maintenance history, and sales history that makes it a leading candidate in the VIN finder space.

National Insurance Crime Bureau

The United States National Insurance Crime Bureau has a powerful online database for anyone to use that’s free of charge and includes information on whether a car may have a record of an insurance theft claim, and has not been recovered, or has ever been reported as a salvage vehicle. The NICB vin check provides its information from NICB member insurance companies so you can trust the information you’re receiving is accurate and timely. The salvage VIN check information will show whether a car has a history of being stolen or damaged.

  • Accurate information from NICB member insurance companies provides peace of mind when searching the database
  • Ability to take a photo of a VIN and upload it to VINCheck and a report will be generated
  • Database limited to theft reports and salvaged titles
  • Reports limited to five within a 24 hour period per user

Score: 8/10 The National Insurance Crime Bureau offers a comprehensive database full of information about a vehicle’s history related to theft claims and salvaged titles. The information is substantive but is limited to only a few categories. The free tool is an excellent starting point, but additional services will be needed to understand the history of a car fully.

Similar to the National Insurance Crime Bureau, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is a free government agency that provides information for free. The NHTSA service, however, is limited to only a certain category and that is where a car is manufactured. After you enter the VIN into the system, the NHTSA vin decoder will show where a vehicle was manufactured including the build plant and country.

  • Government-backed agency ensures the information you’re receiving is 100% accurate
  • Millions of vehicles within the database means you’ll have a greater chance of finding the vehicle in question
  • Free program
  • Limited information only shows where a car was manufactured
  • Reports don’t give the full history of the vehicle or any outstanding issues or recalls

Score: 7/10 While this is a free system that allows you to see where a car was manufactured, it is limited to only the car’s production. While this information is helpful in determining the first step in a car’s lifespan, it doesn’t give any additional information that will be helpful in researching a used car.

Autocheck rates cars on a 1-to-100 scale and tells you the condition based on a numerical value that should appeal to many used car buyers. However, the service doesn’t provide a comprehensive overview of a car’s history by only giving information on possible changes of ownership and mileage within its reports. The Autocheck reports do not show accident information or maintenance records which can be critical in the used car buying process.

  • Detailed information on the car’s mileage and any possible changes in ownership
  • Five reports for $49.99 is competitively priced within the industry
  • Reports don’t show maintenance records or whether a vehicle has been in an accident
  • One report for $24.99 is on the higher end in terms of pricing

Score: 6/10 Autocheck rates cars 1-to-100 will appeal to many shoppers, however, its limited database of information means that customers will need to shop elsewhere to get the full history of a vehicle.

Many used car buyers have heard of services like the free CARFAX report by VIN which allows them to see a vehicle’s history by searching its VIN number, it doesn’t always stack up to the competition. CARFAX can provide buyers with accident data, rental history, service history, and ownership history, however, to truly understand all the ins and outs of the car, a paid report must be purchased and that can send the price of the report skyrocketing to get all the vital information needed. A mobile app helps with the overall experience.

  • Name recognition and one of the industry leaders in the VIN decoder space
  • Database of information shows how many owners the car has had, where the vehicle was titled, and whether it’s a clean, salvaged, or rebuilt title
  • Informational reports include recall information and service information
  • Can get expensive quickly depending on how many vehicle reports you need
  • Not all vehicle accidents or damage may be shown
  • Reports don’t show current vehicle condition or current odometer readings

Score: 8/10 CARFAX is an industry standard within the VIN decoder space and has a substantial history to back it up. With reliable sourcing and a database that stretches into the millions, CARFAX is a good choice for those looking to find relevant information on a used car. However, the pricing of these reports can quickly escalate if there are a number of vehicles you’re researching during your used car buying journey.

What is a VIN Check?

Before you can use some of the online tools to search a car’s history using a VIN lookup, you must first ask ‘what is a VIN number?’ Starting on January 1, 1969, any car manufactured in the United States or manufactured overseas and imported to the U.S. required a VIN. On most cars, the standard VIN is 17 characters in length and is used as your car’s DNA strand or marker to separate it from the thousands of other cars on the road. However, some classic cars or older cars, in general, will have a VIN that can be anywhere from 11 to 17 characters in length.

Located on the bottom of the windshield or near the door jamb on most cars, the VIN is easy to locate on a modern car. In addition to properly marking your vehicle, a VIN decoder can help an owner understand more about the car including unique features of the automobile or the specs of the vehicle when it was first manufactured in the United States or overseas. What makes a VIN unique is all the information it contains. By using a VIN decoder, you can understand where a car was manufactured – VINs starting with 1, 4, or 5 were built in the United States, for example, while ‘J’ signifies a car built in Japan – and even whether there are recalls on the vehicle that would pose safety risks while driving. A VIN lookup is essential to the car buying process and provides a detailed look into a car’s overall history.

Why is a VIN check Important?

Now that you have an understanding of what a VIN check is, you can more fully understand its importance in the car buying process. From a car’s maintenance history to its purchase history and beyond, a VIN search and VIN check provide all the information necessary to make an informed decision about a used car purchase. When purchasing a car without a VIN check, you run the risk of not fully understanding a car’s history and that can be detrimental to the buying process. For example, you may not fully understand any potential damage a car has previously had like flood damage or accidents.

Cars are an expensive purchase and when properly researched, can provide you with long-lasting, reliable transportation for years or even decades to come. A VIN finder ensures you have the full picture necessary by providing the key pieces of information needed to make an informed decision about a car.

Tips for Using Free VIN Check Tools

With so many free VIN lookup options available, there are some things to consider when selecting the right service. In addition to all the vital information a free car report can offer like a vehicle history report , maintenance reports, and who has previously owned the car, there are things to consider when selecting the right service to use. If possible, it’s often best to verify the information you’re reviewing with at least one other service to ensure its accuracy and legitimacy. Make sure you’re taking time to truly study and understand the reports that are given to you. A free VIN lookup can offer a lot of information and it’s vital that you take the time to understand the results before moving forward in the car buying process.

So, what are some common mistakes when it comes to using a VIN check service? First, ensure that you’ve typed the VIN number correctly into the VIN number lookup system. Even being off by one number or one letter will bring up details on a car that you’re not currently looking to purchase. This will lead to a false understanding of the vehicle you’re looking to purchase and can alter your opinion on the car. Second, take the time to read your VIN lookup report in its entirety and to fully understand the report. By not taking the time to digest and understand the information, you may form an opinion of the vehicle that doesn’t match its value or condition. Finally, ensure the information you are reviewing is from a reputable online service and if you have questions or concerns, seek out another report from another service to compare reports. It’s critical that the information you’re reviewing is accurate and reflects the car you’re viewing.

After using all of these services it’s clear that they all have their pros and cons and some certainly succeed in areas but fall short in others. For the most complete understanding of a vehicle’s history, a VIN decoder service like EpicVIN offers the most information. From its maintenance records and seller history to its flood damage reports and photos of vehicles, EpicVIN truly has the most comprehensive reports available. Free VIN lookups and reports from the NICB and NHTSA are backed by the U.S. government and provide accurate information in the areas they specialize within. However, those are limited to salvaged titles and where a car was manufactured. These reports don’t tell the whole story of a car. CARFAX and Autocheck each offer their own unique take on a car’s history report and while CARFAX has the name recognition, it falls short in some key areas including pricing and overall vehicle history. Autocheck’s 1-to-100 car rating is a unique way to deliver reports but ultimately falls short in key information that shoppers are looking for.

A used car buying journey can take days, weeks, months, or even years to complete. With so many vehicles to choose from, having accurate information is the first step in the process. Services like EpicVIN provide you with detailed information on a car’s history that becomes the vital information needed to make an informed decision on which car to purchase. A detailed maintenance history, purchase history, flood damage history, and a detailed list of a car’s key features are just some of the pieces of information needed to make your decision. In the end, ensure that you’re receiving information from reputable VIN lookup services and if you have questions or concerns, compare with other online services to ensure accuracy in the reports. Make sure to read the reports fully and go into the process with as much information on hand as possible. This will ultimately ensure a smooth buying process and that you can leave the dealer lot knowing you purchased a car that’ll serve your needs for years to come.

Q: Can a VIN check tell me if a vehicle has been flooded?

Services like EpicVIN provide a comprehensive list of vehicle features including whether there has been any reported flood damage to the car. Potential water damage can be a critical piece of information to have when looking at a car to purchase.

During Vehicle Safety Recalls Week, drivers are encouraged to check their vehicles for open recalls ... [+] and get them repaired for free as soon as possible.

Nearly 50 million vehicles on U.S. roads have unrepaired safety recalls – that’s about one of five vehicles. It’s a serious issue, according to the National Safety Council (NSC), as many recalls involve defective parts that can pose life-threatening risks to drivers and passengers.

“It’s important for drivers to make sure the vehicle they are driving is safe,” said Lonny Haschel, senior program manager with the safety group’s Mobility Safety Impact Program. “All roadway users are safer when vehicle safety recalls are repaired.”

The National Safety Council, a nonprofit advocacy group, along with other safety groups, urges all drivers to check their vehicles for open recalls during Vehicle Safety Recalls Week , which runs from March 4 through March 10, and get them repaired as soon as possible.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), which sets and enforces vehicle safety standards and manages the recall if a vehicle has a safety defect, sponsors the annual initiative to focus on the importance of checking for recalls and getting problems fixed immediately — for free. The federal agency launched a new online tool that allows consumers to easily check for recalls using only a vehicle’s license plate number.

“While not all recalls are high profile, all recalls are a safety issue. Unrepaired recalls can make your vehicle less safe for you, your family, and others on the road,” Sophie Shulman, deputy administrator for NHTSA, said in a statement. “When you change your clocks, check for recalls. And if you have an open recall, call your dealership immediately to schedule a free repair.”

In 2023, nearly 35 million vehicles were recalled and 1,000 recalls were issued, impacting car seats, tires, RVs and other equipment as well as vehicles, according to the federal agency.

To check for recalls, NHTSA issued a series of recommendations:

  • Visit NHTSA.gov/Recalls and enter a vehicle’s license plate number or vehicle identification number to check for any open recalls;
  • If a vehicle has an open recall, owners should contact their automaker’s local dealership to schedule a FREE recall repair;
  • Consumers can also search for recalls related to car seats, tires and other vehicle equipment;
  • Download NHTSA’s SaferCar App , enter vehicle information, and let the app automatically send updates if there is a recall;
  • Sign up at NHTSA.gov/Alerts to be notified by email if a vehicle is affected by a future safety recall;
  • Check for open recalls at least twice a year. A good way to remember is to always check when daylight saving time begins and ends; and
  • Vehicle owners can report a problem at NHTSA.gov or call the agency’s Vehicle Safety Hotline at 888-327-4236 if they think their vehicles may have a safety defect that isn’t part of a current recall.

The National Safety Council, which also offers vehicle owners an easy way to check for recalls online through CheckToProtect.org , noted that all recalls can be repaired for free at authorized dealers, regardless of whether the vehicle was purchased from the dealer. The safety group also recommends that drivers check for recalls every time the vehicle is serviced or every three months.
