macOS Big Sur Safari

Apple has released the latest version of its Safari browser for macOS Catalina and High Sierra, ahead of the release of Big Sur later this year. Safari 14 improves the browser’s tabs, adds a new privacy report feature, and offers new customization options for your start page. You can download it by heading to System Preferences app and clicking “Software Update.”

One of the key improvements that’s coming with the latest version of Safari is improved tab management . The tabs themselves have been redesigned to be more space-efficient, display website favicons by default, and show a preview of each tab while hovering your mouse over them. There’s a new start page which you can customize with your own backgrounds and links, and a Privacy Report that highlights any cross-site trackers that the browser is blocking. Oh, and this version of the browser also removes support for Adobe Flash.

Tab management, baby

Some new Safari features will require macOS Big Sur to run, and aren’t available if you’re updating Safari on an older version of the operating system, 9to5Mac reports . These include support for 4K HDR video, and the browser’s built-in translation feature.

Yesterday saw the release of a swathe of Apple operating system updates , including iOS 14 for iPhones, iPadOS 14 for iPads, tvOS 14 for the Apple TV, and watchOS 7 for Apple Watches. You’ve still got a little longer to wait to update your Mac, but at least you can grab the new browser now.

How to Check the Version Number of Apple Safari Browser

When you need to know which Safari you're running

last 1 safari version

What To Know

  • Choose Safari from the top menu, and About Safari . The version number will be on the window that pops up.
  • On iOS, go to Settings > General > Software Update . Your iOS version and Safari version are the same. (Example: iOS 11 = Safari 11)

This article explains how to find the version of Safari that you're running on a Mac and an iOS device.

Find the Safari Version Number on a Mac

To determine which version of Safari is installed on a Mac computer:

Go to the dock and select the Safari icon to open the Safari browser.

Choose About Safari under the Safari menu.

A small window appears with the browser version number.

The first number, located before the parenthesis, is the current version of Safari. The longer second number (located inside the parentheses) is the WebKit/Safari Build version. For example, if the dialog box displays Version 11.0.3 (13604.5.6), the Safari version number is 11.0.3.

Find the Safari Version Number on an IOS Device

Because Safari is part of the iOS operating system, its version is the same as the current version of iOS that you have.

To see the iOS version currently installed on an iPhone or iPad, follow the instructions below.

Open Settings .

Select General .

Select Software Update . The number that appears at the top of the screen next to iOS is the version number. For example, if your iPhone or iPad is running iOS 11.2.6, then it is running Safari 11. If your device is running iOS 12.1.2, it is running Safari 12, and so on.

Underneath the version number, you'll either see "Your software is up to date" or a prompt to update to the latest version.

As of October, 2022, the current version of Safari on Mac, iPad, and iPhone is 16.0.

First, turn off automatic updates by opening System Preferences and selecting Software Update , then turning off Automatically keep my Mac up to date . After that, either restore a Time Machine backup that included an older version of Safari, or downgrade to an earlier version of macOS .

Safari 17 with enhanced Private Browsing out now for macOS Ventura, macOS Monterey

Safari with Apple's Private Browsing

last 1 safari version

Timed to join the update to macOS Sonoma , the introduction of Safari 17 updates Apple's macOS web browser adds some much-needed features to the surfing tool.

The release notes mention support for Profiles , allowing browsing to be separated for topics and tasks like "Work" and "Personal." Profiles have their own history, cookies, extensions, Tab Groups, and favorites lists.

A new enhanced Private Browsing locks the windows when they're not used, stops known trackers from loading, and can remove identifying tracking elements from URLs.

Search has also been streamlined to make it faster, offer more relevant results, and to make it easier to read.

Multiple tab selections allow users to select multiple tabs at once, so they can be moved around the tab bar or created into a Tab Group.

The update is available through System Settings in macOS Ventura or System Preferences in macOS Monterey , under General then Software Update. The download weighs in at 165.7MB.

Supported Browsers and Features

Supported browsers .

By default, the generated project supports all modern browsers. Support for Internet Explorer 9, 10, and 11 requires polyfills. For a set of polyfills to support older browsers, use react-app-polyfill .

Supported Language Features

This project supports a superset of the latest JavaScript standard. In addition to ES6 syntax features, it also supports:

  • Exponentiation Operator (ES2016).
  • Async/await (ES2017).
  • Object Rest/Spread Properties (ES2018).
  • Dynamic import() (stage 4 proposal)
  • Class Fields and Static Properties (part of stage 3 proposal).
  • JSX , Flow and TypeScript .

Learn more about different proposal stages .

While we recommend using experimental proposals with some caution, Facebook heavily uses these features in the product code, so we intend to provide codemods if any of these proposals change in the future.

Note that this project includes no polyfills by default.

If you use any other ES6+ features that need runtime support (such as Array.from() or Symbol ), make sure you are including the appropriate polyfills manually , or that the browsers you are targeting already support them.

Configuring Supported Browsers

By default, the generated project includes a browserslist configuration in your package.json file to target a broad range of browsers based on global usage ( > 0.2% ) for production builds, and modern browsers for development. This gives a good development experience, especially when using language features such as async/await, but still provides high compatibility with many browsers in production.

The browserslist configuration controls the outputted JavaScript so that the emitted code will be compatible with the browsers specified. The production list will be used when creating a production build by running the build script, and the development list will be used when running the start script. You can use https://browserl.ist to see the browsers supported by your configured browserslist .

Here is an example browserslist that is specified in package.json :

Note that this does not include polyfills automatically for you. You will still need to polyfill language features (see above) as needed based on the browsers you are supporting.
When editing the browserslist config, you may notice that your changes don't get picked up right away. This is due to an issue in babel-loader not detecting the change in your package.json . A quick solution is to delete the node_modules/.cache folder and try again.

Audience coverage:.

Add the Browserslist config to display compatible browsers.

How to get started

Use defaults if you're building a web application for the global audience.

Use node 18 if you're building a Node.js application, e.g., for server-side rendering.

Autoprefixer , Babel and many other tools will find target browsers automatically if you add the following to  package.json :

Query syntax

Start with the default configuration.

You can pick a sound set of versions with the  defaults query which is a shortcut for > 0.5%, last 2 versions, Firefox ESR, not dead . It matches recent versions of popular and supported browsers worldwide and includes Firefox Extended Support Release which is updated roughly annually.

The defaults query was thoroughly designed by the Browserslist community. It helps promote best practices and avoid common pitfalls.

Select browser versions with certain usage

You can pick versions that have more than or less than a certain size of the audience worldwide, in a region, or in a country. You can also use the visitor data of your own website.

  • > 5% all versions with > 5% of the audience worldwide.
  • >= 5% in US same as above but in the US.
  • >= 5% in alt-AS same as above but in Asia.
  • You may exclude the most recent versions of all browsers that have been just released. Please always add last … versions to include them back.
  • You can exclude your global audience. Please be careful when narrowing the audience to a region or a country.
  • You may include dead versions. Please consider adding not dead .
  • > 5% in my stats versions with > 5% of usage within your own audience.
  • > 5% in circle-ci stats versions with > 5% of usage within the audience data from shareable configuration, available as custom stats .
  • cover 99.5% the smallest set of popular versions with collective usage over 99.5% of the audience worldwide.
  • cover 99.5% in CN same as above but in China.
  • cover 99.5% in alt-EU same as above but in Europe.

Select recent browser versions

You can pick a few recent browser versions.

  • last 2 versions last 2 versions of each browser.
  • last 2 Chrome versions same as above but just Chrome.
  • You might exclude older versions still used by a substantial audience. Please always add 5%"> > … to include them back.
  • You may pick dead browsers like Internet Explorer. Always use last … versions with not dead .
  • last 2 major versions all minor and patch releases of the last 2 major versions.
  • last 2 Safari major versions same as above but just Safari.
  • unreleased versions alpha and beta versions.
  • unreleased Chrome versions same as above but just Chrome.
  • since 2020-01-15 versions released since Jan 15, 2020.
  • since 2020-01 versions released since January 2020, inclusive.
  • since 2020 versions released since 2020, inclusive.
  • last 3 years same as above if you run this query in 2022.

Select specific browser versions

You can pick browser versions or a version range of your choice.

  • ChromeAndroid 103 mobile Chrome version 103.
  • Firefox > 20 desktop Firefox versions newer than 20.
  • iOS >= 13.2 mobile Safari version 13.2 and newer.
  • not Firefox ESR removes specific version.
  • Make sure that your audience uses specific versions (e.g., in a corporate setting) or that your application is not built to work with specific versions (e.g., it's a bleeding-edge demo project). Please consider using last … versions or 5%"> > … to include more versions.
  • Note, that Opera Mini has special version all . not op_mini all is not a special query.
  • ie 6-8 an inclusive range of Internet Explorer versions.
  • Firefox ESR the latest Firefox Extended Support Release.

Select specific Node.js versions

You can pick Node.js versions or a version range of your choice. Useful if you know for sure the runtime configuration of your server-side code.

  • node 10 latest 10.x.x Node.js version.
  • node 10.4 latest 10.4.x Node.js version.
  • node > 16 all Node.js versions newer than 16.0.0 .
  • last 2 node versions two latest Node.js releases.
  • last 2 node major versions two last major-version Node.js releases.
  • maintained node versions all Node.js versions currently maintained by Node.js Foundation.
  • current node the Node.js version used by Browserslist right now.

Select browser versions that support a certain feature

You can pick browser versions that support features from the Can I Use database. See the  caniuse-lite repository for the full list of features.

  • fully supports es6-module versions that fully support JavaScript modules via script tag.
  • partially supports css-grid versions that fully or partially supports CSS Grid Layout.
  • supports … is an alias for partially supports … , however as its naming is ambagious, prefer using partially supports to make your intent of including partially supported browsers clear.
  • These queries rarely work well on their own. Please consider combining them with other queries.

Combine multiple queries into one

You can combine versions matched by multiple queries with or or , ; you can intersect them with and . You can also negate any query with not if it's not the first one in your list.

  • > 0.5%, last 2 versions combines > 0.5% with last 2 versions .
  • > 0.5% or last 2 versions same as above.
  • > 0.5% and last 2 versions intersects > 0.5% with last 2 versions .
  • > 0.5% and not last 2 versions removes last 2 versions from > 0.5% .
  • A query with not can't be the left-hand one in the list.
  • A query with not is always joined to the left-hand one with and , even if or or , are used.
  • The following queries yield the same result: > 0.5% and not last 2 versions , > 0.5% or not last 2 versions , > 0.5%, not last 2 versions .

Exclude unmaintained browser versions

You can combine your queries with not dead to exclude dead browsers, i.e., browsers without official support or updates for more than 24 months. Right now these include IE 11, IE Mobile 11, BlackBerry 10, BlackBerry 7, Samsung 4, Opera Mobile 12.1, and all versions of Baidu.

  • > 0.2% and not dead excludes dead versions from versions matched by > 0.2% .

Why Browserslist

Browserslist helps you keep the right balance between browser compatibility and bundle size. With Browserslist, you will cover wider audience and have smaller bundle size.

It's just HTML coding, a bunch of videos, and web pages from around the world; in fact, I doubt many web pages are even created and updated on any of Apple's computers -- it's a Windows/Linux world, judging from the number of foreign language characters that show up on Mac-rendered web pages, all those  (and other geographcal-specific letterforms) that riddle (literally and figuratively) a typical printed web page from Mac Os.

zapmymac Avatar

After using it the past 30 seconds, I can tell you that 14.1.2 feels dramatically, the same.

katbel Avatar

I never understood the way Apple insists the only way to get the latest (safest) version of Safari is through the last 2 OS releases. Anything older than that -- say, 10.11 (El Capitan), 10.13 (High Sierra) et al -- are not updated. Suddenly any software updates or security fixes require (currently) 10.15 and maybe 10.14. I won't even go into OS 11 B.S. Land (that's Big Sur, to you, sir). To a degree, Firefox doesn't require this, not does Google Chrome doesn't require this. (They do have minimal OS requirements, though). But what web browser (other than Apple's Safari) requires that your computer have the latest OS releases installed first? snip snip Anyone still running iWeb --you know, "web design for the rest of us!" /s

Surf safe and sound.

Strong security protections in Safari help keep you safe. Passkeys introduce a safer way to sign in. iCloud Keychain securely stores and autofills passkeys and passwords across all your devices. Safari also notifies you when it encounters suspicious websites and prevents them from loading. Because it loads each web page in a separate process, any harmful code is always confined to a single browser tab so it won’t crash the entire application or access your data. And Safari automatically upgrades sites from HTTP to the more secure HTTPS when available.

Passkeys introduce a more secure and easier way to sign in. No passwords required.

Passkeys are end-to-end encrypted and safe from phishing and data leaks, and they are stronger than all common two-factor authentication types. Thanks to iCloud Keychain, they work across all your Apple devices, and they even work on non-Apple devices.

iCloud Keychain securely stores your user names, passkeys, passwords and credit card numbers, and keeps them up to date on your trusted devices. So you can easily sign in to your favourite websites — as well as apps on iOS and iPadOS — and quickly make online purchases.

Designed for developers.

Deep WebKit integration between Mac hardware and macOS allows Safari to deliver the fastest performance and the longest battery life of any browser on the platform, while supporting modern web standards for rich experiences in the browser. WebKit in macOS Sonoma includes optimizations that enable even richer browsing experiences, and give developers more control over styling and layout — allowing for more engaging content.
