Local News | Ohio Turnpike invites public to customer appreciation Nov. 22 in Amherst

The Ohio Turnpike is inviting the public to attend its final customer appreciation event of the year at Vermilion Valley Service Plaza from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Nov. 22, according to a news release.

The service plaza is located at milepost 139.5 eastbound in Amherst in Lorain County.

For local travelers, an access road to the service plaza is located west off of state Route 58, which is about one mile north of state Route 113.

The Vermilion Valley Service Plaza is located at 7998 Leavitt Road in Amherst.

Ohio Turnpike staff will be onsite to meet-and-greet guests and promote safe travel over the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday season, according to the release.

Troopers from the Ohio State Highway Patrol will display a patrol car inside the service plaza and meet with guests, the release said.

Service plaza partners, AVI Foodsystems, Applegreen USA and 7-Eleven will provide complimentary food items and samples, according to the release.

Faculty from Bowling Green State University – Firelands College’s criminal justice program will be onsite to raise awareness about human trafficking prevention, the release said.

The Cleveland Police Historical Society and Museum and the Ohio State Highway Patrol Retirees’ Association will display vintage cruisers outside the service plaza, according to the release.

Guests and their families can also spin an electronic prize wheel to win Ohio Turnpike merchandise, including $25 gift cards from 7-Eleven, the release said.

Ohio Turnpike’s new tolling system set to go live in coming weeks

COLUMBUS, Ohio — After months of delays, the Ohio Turnpike is preparing in the coming weeks to launch a much-anticipated revamp of the way it calculates and collects tolls, including allowing E-ZPass users to drive through many toll plazas without needing to fully stop.

The new tolling system will take effect once turnpike contractors finish testing monitoring devices that will determine how much to charge each of the tens of millions of vehicles that drive along the 241-mile-long highway every year, according to turnpike spokesman Chuck Cyrill. That testing was originally expected to be completed by last November , but Cyrill said there were some “bumps in the road” caused by issues such as winter weather.

There’s no firm date yet for when the new system will go live, Cyrill said.

Until now, turnpike drivers have been charged tolls based on where they got on and off the highway. Under the new, more complex system, which will take effect once testing is completed, vehicles will pay a flat-rate toll upon entering Ohio, as well as an additional toll for westbound passenger vehicles headed into Indiana.

Turnpike drivers will also still have to pay a mileage-based toll, but only if they drive somewhere between toll plazas near Swanton (mile marker 49) and Newton Falls (mile marker 211). There will no longer be toll plazas at the exits closest to the Indiana and Pennsylvania borders – exits 13, 25, 34, and 39 in Northwest Ohio, and exits 215, 216, 218, 232, and 234 in the Youngstown area.

Long-combination vehicles longer than 90 feet – which usually means semis carrying two or three large trailers – will have to pay tolls based on mileage, rather than the current $12 flat rate.

The result will be that, depending on their route, some turnpike drivers will pay more under the new tolling system, while others will pay the same or even save some money. During the first year of the new toll system, the turnpike will save $2.7 million in operating costs and make about $2.4 million more in revenue, according to turnpike commission estimates from last fall.

The other big change is that the left-hand lanes of all 24 remaining turnpike tollbooths will be dedicated E-ZPass lanes, where vehicles can drive through at low speeds (10 miles per hour) without stopping. Electronic sensors will automatically determine how much to charge each driver’s account.

Drivers without an E-ZPass will have to use the right-hand lanes to pay with cash or a credit card at new automated toll payment collection machines.

Motorists who use the non-stop, left-hand lanes even though they don’t have an E-ZPass will have their license plates recorded on cameras and receive a bill in the mail. E-ZPass holders who use the left-hand lanes but don’t have a transponder on their vehicle that’s detected will be charged a new, higher toll rate than the usual E-ZPass toll rate.

The new toll system, which has been in the works since 2016, is the largest construction project in the Ohio Turnpike’s nearly 69-year history, according to a release.
