El gouna international 2024 day two evening roundup.

psa world tour membership

In the evening session of the 2024 El Gouna International, Egypt’s Aly About Eleinen knocked out No.7 seed Mazen Hesham in an exciting end to the day’s action on court 3, while World No.12 Amina Orfi overcame World No.36 Hana Moataz in another all-Egyptian affair.

In a match that was competitive from the first rally, Eleinen knocked out the first seed of the tournament in a four-game thriller. Hesham fought quickly to 10-8 in the first game, but a spirited resurgence from Eleinen levelled the match at 10-10. Hesham claimed a third game ball, but it was Eleinen who claimed the first game 13-11.

In the second game, it was Hesham who again earned the first game ball at 10-9, but this time the World No.6 kept his composure as the game entered a tie-break and restored parity at 1-1.

The pair traded points to 8-8, before Eleinen won a string of three successive rallies to retake the lead in the match. Eleinen looked to be storming to a 3-1 win after taking a quick 5-2 lead in the fourth game, but Hesham rallied back and took a 10-9 lead. The World No.13 saved two game balls before converting the match on the first time of asking at 13-11.

Speaking after the match, Eleinen said: “Twelve years ago, when this tournament started, I was a little kid watching these top guys play, and all I wanted was to be one of those guys. My dream is to win El Gouna. Obviously, winning the World Champs is the goal of every player, and it is for me as well but after that, just comes El Gouna, just because it’s so special for me, because the first rounds were played in Alexandria.

“I have been battling all season, I had a tough one against Ali [Farag] at the US Open, 3-1, it was the first time I got a game out of the top guys, and then in Houston, it went to five with Karim [Abdel Gawad], and lost 11-9 in the fifth, I went straight to Chicago, I lost 11-9 in the fifth to Dessouky, and then, went to BlackBall and lost to Karim 11-8 in the fifth! And as happy as I am to get close matches, I want to win, and believe it or not, the losses, they teach you a lot.

“Today, I cramped at the end of the 5th, and if I was tired, he must have been tired as well. I just wanted to keep fighting until the last point. My coach Hesham El Attar, my parents, everybody kept telling me that it would come, and when it does, it’s going to feel special and they were right. Another day tomorrow to recover, and back to it again.”

Egypt’s Orfi triumphed over compatriot Hana Moataz in a five-game thriller that drew a packed crowd to Court 1 at Squash Complex El Gouna.

Orfi, who lost 3-1 to Moataz in round two of the Black Ball Squash Open just seven days ago, took the first game 11-8 in a strong start to proceedings, but Moataz struck back, and restored parity at 1-1 after a tense tie-break.

The pair traded games to 2-2 to set up an exhilarating fifth game. Both Moataz and Orfi had match balls, but it was Orfi at 15-14 that finally won the 87-minute epic after Moataz struck the tin.

Afterwards, Orfi said: “I felt I didn’t play my best today. Coming into the match I was a bit nervous because I lost to her last week at Black Ball; I was thinking about revenge and my ranking and all that. I just tried to keep pushing because I felt my squash wasn’t the best and that wasn’t what was going to make me win the match so I tried just to keep going and in the end she’s the one who made the errors and I’m the one who won the match.

“I think today the biggest difference was that I had more of a fighting spirit. At Black Ball I wasn’t thinking as much but today I kept going and never gave up.”

Malaysia’s Aira Azman reached her first Platinum quarter-final after defeating Scotland’s Georgia Adderley.

The Malaysian, with medical tape on her arm and leg, was clearly struggling despite winning the first game 11-7. The Scotswoman fought back and took a 2-1 lead in the match, but Azman’s late comeback won her a place in the next round after winning the fourth game 14-12 after a tie-break and keeping ahead to clinch the fifth game 11-9 and reach a third round clash with England’s Georgina Kennedy.

Afterwards, Azman said: “I’m very happy with my performance and how I pushed through but I’m very worried about my body. I’ve had this injury a couple of times now. I recover then get it again, it happens whenever I’m on tour and I’ve been really upset about it because I’ve put so much effort to get my body healthy but it keeps coming back every time. I was very upset but I knew I could push through, it was more of a mental game and I’m very happy with that.”

In another exciting match in the men’s draw, France’s Gregoire Marche defeated Malaysia’s Eain Yow Ng in five games.

Yow Ng, who came into the tournament off the back of winning his first World Tour title at the German Open, edged the first two matches 11-8, 11-9. Marche looked competitive throughout the early phases, but took control as he won the third and fourth games 11-8, 11-8 to bring the match level.

In a close-fought fifth game, the two players traded points to 9-8 in favour of the frenchman. Marche earned two match balls, and despite a late surge from Yow Ng to take the match to a tie-break, Marche won the game 12-10 to take his spot in round three.

Afterwards, Marche said: “The human body is sometimes incredible. At 2-0 down, I was already feeling quite spent, and honestly, I felt he was still working hard, and I thought, he might just fold a bit. He wasn’t making many mistakes at the beginning. It came down to the end of each game, where I was the one who bended a bit, and on this court, I couldn’t use my speed to overtake him at the back. I needed to be accurate, and I was much less so at the beginning. But then, he started to lose a bit of accuracy.”

In another five-game encounter, Egypt’s Nada Abbas defeated World No.22 Hollie Naughton after a strong fightback from the Canadian.

Naughton kept ahead in the first game as she propelled herself to 10-8, but the Egyptian put up late resistance and saved two game balls, taking a 1-0 lead after winning the tie-break 13-11.

Abbas looked in command of game two as she pushed to a comfortable 11-6 win, but Naughton controlled the next two games, dominating the match as the Egyptian struggled to keep pace as the Canadian won the third and fourth matches 11-3, 11-2.

The fine form of Naughton didn’t continue into the fifth game, as a revived Abbas looked focused and won the final game 11-6 to go through to the third round.

Afterwards, Abbas said: “I’m really happy to be through. I just played Hollie in Detroit a few months ago and she won so I’m really pleased to be through. I lost focus in the third and fourth games and in the fifth I just tried to totally forget about what had happened and try to focus point by point. I’m happy it went my way!

“It’s always nice having [a home crowd] supporting you. It gives confidence and makes you fired up to win. I’m really glad I had people here supporting me and my coaches too.”

Scotland’s Greg Lobban upset World No.15 Miguel Rodriguez to reach the third round after a strong 3-0 performance.

The Scotsman always looked in control of the match as Lobban, despite never having a decisive lead over the Colombian, kept consistent throughout the three games and won 11-7, 11-9, 11-9 to book his place in the third round where he will face Karim Abdel Gawad.

Elsewhere, Nouran Gohar, Nour El Tayeb, Karim Abdel Gawad, Diego Elias, Georgina Kennedy, Malak Khafagy, Dimitri Steinmann, Paul Coll and Sarah-Jane Perry all progress to the third round.
