Above the Arctic Circle, at 69ºN, midway between the Lofoten Islands and the North Cape is Tromsø. The city is actually an island connected by two bridges.
The Prostneset dock (Hurtigruten) is right in the city center. The Breivika dock for the larger cruise ships, is 4 km north of town and has no facilities at all. Shuttle buses (19.95 Euro) run regularly between the Breivika harbor and the city center when cruise ship arrives. Bus 42 runs (about every 30 minutes) also between the Breivika harbor and the city center. A day pass for Tromso is about 11 Euro.
The Port of Tromsø is making major investments in the city center with new and improved piers and facilities including a new cruise terminal. As a result of these investments, cruise ships will be able to call in the heart of the city and the passengers and crew will be in the middle of all activities. The piers are completed, as are the building facilities in the port's new terminal building.

The ride takes four minutes, and the cable car has a capacity of 27 passengers. The restaurant has seating capacity for 150 people.
Directions from Breivika: First walk to the road and use the walkway under the road to get on the side where the bus-stop is. Use the city bus 42 to get to the city center (about a 10 minute ride), Get of at Stortorget (it is the first stop after you drive through 2 sets of traffic lights), walk across the road (towards the ocean) and turn right, after 20 meters you are where you will catch citybus number 26. Take the bus to "Fjellheisen" (every 30 minutes), and you are right by the cable cars.
When you have been to the top of the cable cars, jump back on route 26 (it runs in a loop, so it is headed back to the city center from where you got off it). To catch route 42 back to the ship you walk about 200 meters further south from where you got off at Stortorget, and catch it northbound from Urmaker Jørgensen (it will be driving in the opposite direction from when you got off it) and get off at Breivika. Buses are plentiful and very reliable. An all-day bus pass is NOK 60 and a roundtrip ticket for the cable car) is NOK 120. Of course you can also get a taxi from the harbor to the cable car, it will be a little bit faster, but also more expensive. The cost one way will be around 150 NOK ($23), and you can be up to 4 people for that price. Leaflet of attractions and excursions.

Getting To Know Tromso – Cruise Port Guide
Port snapshot.
Situated on the island of Tromsøya at 69ºN, roughly 350km north of the Arctic Circle, Tromsø is the largest urban area in Northern Norway and the cultural hub of the vast, rural north of the country. Welcome to our Tromso cruise port guide. It is a place where you can experience both the Midnight Sun and the Polar Night including the Northern Lights, due to its geographic location. Traditionally an area populated by the Norse and Sámi people dating back almost 10,000 years, Tromsø became an important trading port and market for cod in the late 18th century. It further developed as a centre for Arctic hunting and expeditions, including being a base for expeditions led by Roald Amundsen and Fridtjof Nansen among others. Due to its location within the Arctic region, Tromsø is now a centre for Arctic and polar research, being home to the University of Tromsø, an international centre for arctic research, and also the Norwegian Polar Institute.
Port Location and Facilities
Most large cruise ships dock at the Breivika Cruise Port, located to the north of the city centre around 4km away. There are no facilities here as it is primarily a commercial dock. To transport people from the port, the city operates shuttle buses to the centre. Smaller cruise ships may dock at the Prostneset dock where the Hurtigruten terminal is located. This is right in the city centre, and house a terminal with Wi-Fi, rental car companies, shops, restaurants and tourist information.

At the heart of Tromsø you will find the largest concentration of wooden houses north of Trondheim, dating from 1789 to 1904. These include Skansen, the oldest dwelling in the city, built in 1739 but built on an original earthen rampart from the 13th century.
- Tromsø Cathedral
Built in 1861 and capable of seating over 600, this cathedral is the one of the largest wooden churches in Norway and the northernmost protestant cathedral in the world. The first church on this site actually dates to the mid 13th century and the reign of King Haakon IV.
- Cathedral of Our Lady
The northernmost Catholic and also Christian cathedral in the world, it was built at the same time as the Tromsø Cathedral in 1861. The cathedral is built of wood and is small in size, being able to accommodate only 150 seated.
- Arctic Cathedral
Also known as the Tromsdalen Church due to its location over the Tromsø Bridge in Tromsdalen to the east of the city centre, it is in fact not a cathedral but a parish church. It however has striking design which has had many definitions; iceberg, Sámi tent, or even a fish drying rack. It has a glorious glace façade with an inset cross design and a beautiful glass mosaic depicting light emanating from God’s hand through Jesus and a man and woman.
The most northerly aquarium in the world, Polaria has a strong focus on Arctic marine life and particularly the island of Svalbard. The aquarium has various open tanks and an open pool with a family of bearded seals. The building is easy to spot, resembling ice floes that have been washed ashore by the Arctic Sea.
Tromsø University Museum
Home to departments covering natural and cultural sciences, the permanent exhibitions include geological and zoological displays as well as Sámi exhibits. It is also responsible for the Artic-Alpine Botanic Garden, the northernmost botanical garden in the world, displaying arctic and alpine flora from all over the northern hemisphere.
- Nordnorsk Kunstmuseum
The Northern Norwegian Museum of Art houses a collection from the late 18th century to the present day and has changing thematic exhibitions.
- Fjellheisen

From here you have an open viewing platform to appreciate the surrounding mountains and fjords, can take refreshments at the Fjellstua restaurant, or hike mountain trails including up to the iconic Tromsdalstinden peak at 1,238m high. Safety board say cruise ship at centre of horror rescue should never have left harbor
A cruise ship at the center of a dramatic evacuation off north Norway five years ago should never have left port because it was not up to safety standards, officials said on Tuesday, adding that it could have developed into one of the worst disasters at sea in modern times.
In a report, the Norwegian Safety Investigation Authority upbraided the Viking Sky, saying it was ”a ship's length from running aground.”
The ship left the northern city of Tromsoe carrying almost 1,400 people, despite storm warnings. It was headed for Stavanger in southern Norway when it had engine problems amid a storm on March 23, 2019, and issued a mayday call.
The ship anchored in heavy seas to avoid being dashed on the rocks in an area known for shipwrecks. Passengers saw a large wave crashing through glass doors and knocking people across the floor of an area where they had been instructed to gather.
Nearly 480 passengers were winched off the ship by helicopter despite high winds in a daring rescue operation. The captain then decided to halt the evacuation, and about 900 people were still on board when the ship limped into the Norwegian port of Molde on its own engines.
Dozens of people were injured during the ship’s harrowing ordeal, including 36 who were admitted to hospitals.
Norwegian authorities immediately launched a probe into the accident, which concluded Tuesday that the ship was unprepared to sail in rough seas.
“The accident was caused by insufficient lubricating oil in all of the operating diesel generators’ lubricating oil sump tanks, in combination with pitching and rolling in rough seas,” investigators wrote. “The investigation has identified operational, technical, and organisational safety issues that in different ways contributed to the blackout.”
"As Viking Sky did not comply with the applicable safety standards, it should not have departed Tromsoe under the prevailing circumstances,” the report said.
There was no immediate reaction from operator Viking Ocean Cruises.

Could you suggest a day trip exploring the surrounding countryside with a tour company that does not use huge coaches? Last time I visited with my dear late husband we hired a car and it was wonderful. I can not do that this time but would love to see the countryside around Tromso. thank you Christine
