Rwanda’s High Commissioner to Kenya, Martin Ngoga, during the opening, lauded Kenya for hosting the expo emphasising its importance.

He disclosed that the MKTE does not only offer an opportunity to market the tourism potential of each East African country but also in the region.

“The faster we can get to that level where we market our potential together as a region the better because together we are stronger. I applaud the statistics, particularly on the contribution of tourism. It has been growing in my own country and in the whole EAC,” he said.

Ngoga also emphasised that Rwanda welcomes everyone to experience its beautiful terrain, including the unique offerings of Akagera National Park and the canopy walk in Nyungwe forest, both designated as UNESCO heritage sites due to their rich fauna and flora.

He stated that Rwanda’s national airline intends to expand its coverage to additional destinations after the recent addition of Paris, bringing the total to 24 destinations. He urged tourists and other potential buyers at the expo to stop by the Rwanda Development Board (RDB) stand for further information.

“We have what it takes to be a premier tourist destination. To leverage the attractions we have, we need to work together through various initiatives, such as joint tourism promotion.

“The EARTE is among the key initiatives that we have embarked on as part of implementing the Regional Tourism Marketing Strategy 2021 – 2025 aimed at increasing visitor arrivals to pre-pandemic levels of 7.2 million by the end of 2024,” said Annette Ssemuwemba Mutaawe, who was representing the Secretary General of the East African Community.

Moses Nezehose, founder of Gorilla Expedition Safaris is among the Rwandans participating at the expo for the third time. He highlighted the impact of this event.

“We get to meet serious buyers here who are ready to expand their businesses in Rwanda. It has been productive which is why we keep coming back,” he said.

The Magical Kenya Travel Expo is Kenya’s annual flagship travel trade fair that brings together tourism stakeholders, partners, and media from some of Kenya’s key source markets in Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Americas.

The inaugural Regional Tourism Expo was hosted by the United Republic of Tanzania (URT) in October 2021 in Arusha, while the second edition was hosted by the Republic of Burundi in September 2022 in Bujumbura.

Revitalizing East African Tourism – 20/11/2023

Kenya’s Tourism and Wildlife Cabinet Secretary (CS), Dr. Alfred Mutua, says tourist arrival numbers for the entire East African region remain dismal  and is calling for a radical shift in how the region is marketed.

“In the heart of Africa, where wildlife roams free and landscapes enchant, we find ourselves facing a challenge, a challenge of declining tourist arrival numbers. Our tourism numbers are dismal, and it’s time for us to reimagine our approach.” Said the CS.

The CS painted a vivid picture of the untapped potential that East Africa held. He emphasized the need for collaborative efforts among regional countries to rethink their tourism marketing strategies, urging them to showcase the diverse offerings that make this part of the continent truly magical.

The CS spoke in Nairobi during the official opening of the 3rd East African Regional Tourism Expo (EARTE) and the Magical Kenya Travel Expo (MKTE), at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre, today.

“Our wildlife, our landscapes, and our vibrant cultures are our treasures, but they remain hidden to the world. It’s time for us to unveil the wonders of East Africa to the global stage,” he proclaimed, challenging each nation to play its part in this ambitious endeavor.

Dr. Mutua didn’t just stop at a call for better marketing; he delved into the importance of enhancing services and expanding offerings to meet the evolving expectations of modern travelers. He envisioned a region where tourists not only marveled at the iconic savannahs and majestic animals but also experienced the warmth of local communities and the richness of cultural exchanges.

“We must go beyond the conventional and embrace innovation. Let’s offer immersive experiences that linger in the hearts of our visitor,” he said.

Dr. Mutua said he will spearhead an initiative that will bring together all regional ministers for tourism to work on a joint marketing strategy. The CS also wants players in the tourism sector to craft a circuit that covers the entire region.

During the event the CS also unveiled a logo for marketing East Africa as a tourist destination under the  catch phrase, “Visit East Africa, feel the vibe.”

The CS was accompanied by his Cabinet colleague in charge of East African affairs, Hon. Peninah Malonza, and the Principal Secretary State Department for Tourism, John Ololtuaa.

Among those attending the event was Minister for Wildlife, Conservation and Tourism of South Sudan, Lt. Gen. Zakaria Hassan; Uganda’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister  EAC affairs- Rebeccah Kadaga; Martin Bahinduka Mugarra -Minister of State for Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities-of Uganda; Amos Fish Mahlalela, Deputy Minister of Tourism of South Africa, among many others.

Kenya will instead host the 3rd edition of the East African Regional Tourism Expo (EARTE). EARTE is a regional travel fair showcasing the region’s diverse tourism offering to consumers, trade, media, and buyers. The expo is scheduled to take place from 17 to 21 November 2023, in Nairobi.

EARTE is held on a rotational basis by member states of the East African Community. The United Republic of Tanzania (URT) hosted the first EARTE in October 2021 in Arusha and the Republic of Burundi hosted the second edition in September 2022 in Bujumbura.

The implementation of EARTE is anchored to the East African Community Tourism Marketing Strategy (2021-2025), which is geared towards positioning and marketing the East Africa Community as a leading sustainable tourism destination in Africa. –

Additional information on this regional expo will be shared with industry members in due course. Thank you for your continued support in marketing Kenya as a preferred tourist destination.

Kenya to host regional tourism expos in November

Get ready to embark on a captivating journey through the heart of East Africa as Kenya prepares to take centre stage in the world of tourism this November.

CS Tourism, Wildlife and Heritage Peninah Malonza when she launched the twin tourism fairs (EARTE and MKTE) which will be hosted in November at KICC

Kenya is set to host the 3rd edition of the East Africa Regional Tourism Expo (EARTE) in November, with the aim of boosting regional tourism.

During the unveiling of the event at KICC, scheduled for November 20th-22nd, 2023, Tourism, Wildlife, and Heritage Cabinet Secretary Peninah Malonza also announced that the event would run concurrently with the annual Magical Kenya Travel Expo (MKTE).

According to Malonza, this dual approach will not only enhance Kenya's visibility but also promote regional partnerships and investments within the hospitality, travel, and tourism sectors.

She emphasised the importance of unity and a shared vision within the East African Community.

"The events provide a platform for the travel trade in the region to showcase and network with the world, my ministry is dedicated to promoting tourism within the region," said Malonza.

Furthermore, she highlighted the pivotal role of the tourism sector in fostering inclusive growth and employment opportunities within the region.

"EARTE and MKTE 2023 will allow us to keep industry stakeholders informed about progress made towards industry growth and the new strategies, programs, and partnerships available in the market," she added.

Malonza stressed the significance of collaboration between countries and their regional partners to strengthen the tourism sector.

Role of tourism in East Africa

Abdi Dubat, the Principal Secretary East Africa Community, noted that the tourism sector contributes significantly to the East Africa region's GDP and employment opportunities, making it crucial to share their unique heritage globally.

"The region is ready to share and promote quality tourism to the world; we now have greater potential for intra-Africa tourism, which we should continue to advocate for," said Dubat.

John Olotuaa, the Principal Secretary for Tourism, highlighted the commitment to promote intra-regional tourism flow across borders, anticipating that this platform would strengthen relations among partners across Africa, Europe, and beyond.

The East Africa Regional Tourism Expo (EARTE) is an annual regional travel fair that showcases the diverse tourism offerings of East African Community partner states.

The Magical Kenya Travel Expo (MKTE), on the other hand, is Kenya's annual flagship travel trade fair that brings together tourism stakeholders and media from key source markets globally.

These two expos have now been combined into one event, allowing for increased value and engagement for all participants.

John Chirchir, the Acting CEO of the Kenya Tourism Board, expressed enthusiasm about the opportunity to profile Kenya as a unique tourist destination and consolidate its position as a premier Meetings, Incentives, Conferences & Exhibitions (MICE) destination in the region.

Visa-free travel leads to surge in Kenyan visitors

The success story provides a blueprint for future initiatives to bolster tourism within the continent, says sa tourism.

east africa tourism & hospitality expo 2023

In an era where intercontinental collaboration has become crucial, the recent surge in tourism from Kenya to SA shows the transformative power of strategic policy-making and targeted marketing efforts.

From January 1 2023, Kenyans have enjoyed visa-free travel to SA for 90 days in a year. The scrapping of visa requirements for travellers between the two countries symbolises more than an administrative adjustment.

It marked a milestone in fostering closer ties for African countries, serving as a precursor for a new era of ease in travel and cultural exchange.

The impact of this change, coupled with SA Tourism's marketing strategies, has been profound, with SA experiencing a surge in visitors from Kenya.

Between January and December 2023, Kenya recorded a 99% increase compared with 2022, reaching 42,403 arrivals.

A comparison of seasonal trends shows that in 2023, arrivals exceeded 2019 arrivals. In 2022, arrivals peaked over 2019 in October.

This is an incredible number of Kenyan tourists who chose to explore SA above any other destination. Overall, SA welcomed 6.4-million visitors from the rest of Africa between January and December 2023, marking a 75.6% of all arrivals.

In 2023, Kenyan tourists spent over 20% more than what they spent in 2019. The influx has had economic and cultural impact.  Tourism is a significant economic driver, not just in revenue generation, but also as a catalyst for job creation, cultural exchange and strengthening international relations.

SA Tourism welcomes this with immense pride, and this is reflected in the marketing approach in Kenya,, which is multifaceted, dynamic and highly targeted.

Kenyans have an appetite for new experiences. The current campaign — “There's So Much More to See” — has successfully tapped into this sentiment, highlighting the lesser-known yet equally captivating variety of products and experiences led by SA Tourism's warm, culturally diverse team.

Digital campaigns have further leveraged Kenya's robust social media landscape, achieving impressive engagement metrics including more than 100-million impressions, over 9-million video views and 615,675 clicks.

These figures are a testament to the power of digital storytelling and the importance of authentic brand stories.

Without a doubt, this campaign has demonstrated an incredible capability to forge connections across borders.

The success of the visa-free regime in Kenya is a stepping stone to aim higher and broaden horizons

In fact, SA Tourism has received wide acclaim for the 2022/2023 digital media campaign.

The campaign featured rapper Sho Madjozi as the cultural curator for SA Tourism and focused on exploring Limpopo and celebrating Xitsonga culture through the Xibelani dance.

Last year, the campaign's success was affirmed by a slew of awards at the prestigious international Marketing and Communication Awards, solidifying SA Tourism's digital prowess in the travel and tourism sector.

As the team looks to the future, we will focus on sustaining and building on this momentum. The continuous evolution of marketing strategies and solid diplomatic relations remain vital to achieving this.

SA Tourism is gearing up for more powerful marketing campaigns and collaborations, including participating in the Magical Kenya Travel Expo and the East Africa Regional Tourism Expo. Such platforms showcase the country's diverse tourism offerings and engage with potential travellers and partners across the East Africa region.

SA Tourism hopes the success of the visa-free regime in Kenya will be replicated with other African nations, fostering an even wider continental atmosphere of openness and connectivity.

The lessons learnt and the successes achieved in this endeavour are invaluable, providing a blueprint for future initiatives to bolster tourism within Africa.

This success cannot be discussed without acknowledging the role of mutually beneficial bilateral co-operation. The collaboration between the governments of SA and Kenya has been the cornerstone of this achievement.

Strategic partnerships in the aviation and hospitality sectors have facilitated this growth. The code-share agreement between Kenya Airways and SAA, which established direct flights between Nairobi and major SA cities, has been pivotal in enhancing accessibility and convenience for travellers.

In this destination marketing journey, challenges and opportunities are intertwined. SA Tourism remains committed to promoting SA and collaborating with the tourism industry.

SA Tourism understands that the true value of tourism lies not only in its economic benefits, but also in its ability to transform communities, improve lives, and foster a sense of shared African identity.

The visa-free travel regime with Kenya is a shining example of what can be achieved when nations work together towards a common goal.

It is a story of the endless possibilities that arise when barriers are broken down and bridges are built.

This edition of the MENA region’s largest horticultural exhibition raised climate and desertification awareness through various exhibition stands, panel discussions and public activities.

The airline collaborated on a joint venture with Hamad International Airport (DOH) to design and build the impressive Qatar Airways Garden. As one of the most-visited pavilions at Expo, the ‘Qatar Airways Garden’ attracted over 250,000 visitors during the six-month period, with Qatar Airways and Hamad International Airport (HIA) playing a significant role in bringing people from nearly 170 global destinations to Expo 2023 Doha.

Visitors were greeted by a giant yellow teddy bear – a reference to Lamp Bear located at Hamad International Airport, as well as significant landmarks from across the continents served by Qatar Airways, emphasising Qatar's pivotal role as a global hub.

Qatar Airways Group chief executive officer, Badr Mohammed Al-Meer, said: “With the successful conclusion of Expo 2023 Doha, Qatar is solidifying its role in hosting large-scale global events. Qatar Airways and Hamad International Airport are proud to have contributed to the initiative, allowing us to welcome visitors from all around the world to experience Qatar’s warm hospitality and be a part of its promising future.”

Qatar Airways set the stage for this landmark event by welcoming the Expo 2023 Doha livery into its fleet and commemorating its role as the Official Strategic Partner. Throughout the six months, the Qatar Airways Garden hosted various activities, engaging experiences and cultural performances highlighting the diverse traditions of the world. The airline also hosted familiarisation trips to spotlight the largest horticultural exhibition in the region.

Onboard Qatar Airways flights, the airline celebrated Expo 2023 Doha with organic beverages by the renowned Qatari vegan restaurant, Evergreen Organics. Additionally, Qatar Airways partnered with local farms and Evergreens Organic to introduce an Expo 2023 Doha a la carte onboard menu. The airline also ran insightful gardening shows and videos as part of its in-flight entertainment, OryxOne.

The pavilion further offered its visitors an opportunity to experience Qatar’s cultural and sports landscape. The Qatar Airways Garden observed significant cultural moments, including the Chinese New Year and commemorated its inaugural flight to Medan, Indonesia with Qatar’s Indonesian community at its exhibition stand, coinciding with the Qatar-Indonesia 2023 Year of Culture.

Jordan's rich heritage, tourism treasures leave lasting impression at Expo 2023 Doha

Jordan

The International Horticultural Expo 2023 Doha Qatar, hosted by Qatar for six months, drew to a close in Doha on Thursday, marking a historic milestone as the first of its kind in the Middle East and North Africa, Petra reports.

Jordan participated in the exhibition, which commenced on October 2nd. The Jordanian pavilion emerged as a focal point of interest, showcasing the nation's rich tapestry of tourism, agriculture, archeology, and heritage. Its presence served as a beacon, casting a spotlight on Jordan throughout the exhibition's duration, ultimately fostering increased tourist inflow and foreign investment interest in various sectors such as hotels, restaurants, and entertainment establishments. Throughout the six-month expo, the Jordanian Pavilion welcomed a diverse array of visitors, including members of the Jordanian community in Qatar, as well as individuals from various Arab and foreign nationalities, alongside numerous officials and delegates from other participating countries. The pavilion attracted an estimated 90,000 visitors over the duration of the event, averaging approximately 5 visitors daily. Participation in Expo Doha afforded Jordan a platform to showcase its investment promotion strategy for 2023-2026, highlighting the Kingdom's investment environment, its advantages, developmental regions, priority sectors, and the potential returns on investment for both public and private sector stakeholders. The Jordanian pavilion showcased an array of iconic landmarks, monuments, and indigenous crops from across the Kingdom's diverse landscapes, alongside promoting Jordan's renowned tourist and archaeological sites. Designed in the form of a tent, blending modernity with ancient traditions and Jordanian culture, the pavilion featured native plants such as wormwood and aloe vera, complemented by traditional artifacts including robes, lanterns, mahabish, coffee pots, handmade rugs, pillows, and tables made from sheepskins. The Jordan Valley region, celebrated for its lush forests and towering trees including cypress, oak, pine, and acacia, stood as a cornerstone of the Jordanian Pavilion, representing the nation's agricultural wealth. Visitors were treated to a mosaic floor from Madaba spanning 42 square meters, alongside elaborate models depicting landmarks like the Roman Theater, Petra, and the majestic hills of Wadi Rum, leaving a lasting impression of Jordan's natural beauty and architectural marvels. Many visitors expressed that their experience at the Jordanian pavilion sparked a desire to explore Jordan firsthand. Guests had the opportunity to indulge in traditional Jordanian cuisine, notably Mansaf, a dish renowned across the Arab world. The Jordanian pavilion at Expo Doha offered visitors a virtual journey through Jordan's most iconic tourist destinations and historical sites, capturing the essence of the kingdom's cultural heritage and natural wonders, inspiring countless individuals to plan future visits to Jordan.
