Low Hummer talk ‘Modern Tricks For Living’

Home » Low Hummer talk ‘Modern Tricks For Living’

Welcome to Hull. Home of the Humber Bridge, the birthplace of boiled sweets and now the inception of local band Low Hummer. Our own Dom Smith had a catch up with the Hull sextet about their new album.

low hummer tour dates

Low Hummer is already being hailed as one of the best bands in the UK right now, having formed a few months BC (before Covid) and now have released one of the best debut albums of this year. Having been signed to the Dance To The Radio label, the group have released their first album entitled Modern Tricks for Living. The eclecticism from their debut already showcases the immense talent this group possess.

Having lockdown occur when you’re supposed to be building a fanbase is not ideal, but the band have rolled with it to enormous success. Dan from the band talked about the album coming out and the release of singles during the lockdowns saying, “once you’ve recorded an album, you have that period where nothing happens, and especially because of lockdown you just see your songs come out every couple of months. And then when gigs returned, it just seemed to really step it up.” Vocalist Amy feels similar to this, saying the first few gigs back gave her real confidence, “I’ve just become more confident over time. Especially in these most recent gigs.”

The past 18 months has led to some interesting learning curves for the band as well. Take Steph, who plays keys in the band, saying that before joining the band had never performed live before. But, she did say that having the time to practice during lockdown did have its advantages. “As a band, I think it’s really helped us because we’ve had that time to literally just stand in a practice room practice over and over again and write new stuff and try new stuff as well.”

The lyrics are an enormous part of the Low Hummer’s message, and the majority of the lyrics come from Dan. The band sing his praises in this department, saying his lyrics are universal and everyone can relate to them in one way or another. Steph says, “they’re all universal problems – like on social media, where we’re feeling isolated, or out of place, or whatever, I think particularly people our age massively relate to that.” The songs battle between sounding ‘fun’ and ‘dark,’ which is a difficult balance to pull off. As Dan says, “it kind of balances it out, and I think I think people just respond to that.”

Dan is very comfortable with talking about his process. He believes songwriting to be ultimately cathartic and allows you to channel creativity and your emotions into a piece of art. This is expressed even more live, with that connection to a live audience. “There’s the sort of the energy of playing live, and sort of that adrenalin that it gives you, and again, it comes back to the pride of seeing your friends boss it”, says Dan.

It’s also important for people to know what your band stand for. So, what do the members of Low Hummer stand for exactly? “I would like to think that we articulate ourselves well enough that people can identify that if you are northern and the various elements of what that brings,” says Dan. John continues along a similar path, saying, “like we’re not above any band, and we don’t feel below any band either. All bands are based on the effort they put in and the sort of chances they get given.” Even with this fantastic mentality, things are still heating up for the northern sextet (not a euphemism, by the way) with them supporting the Manic Street Preachers on tour. This has come hot off the heels of a blistering slot on the BBC Introducing stage at this year’s Reading and Leeds festival.

With all this success, how do the band define it themselves? Steph sums this up the best by saying, “I think something that makes you happy, and family, community, for me, like I felt successful when I first joined the band or the day we’d been offered this tour. Because at the end of the day both were really, really exciting opportunities. And I’ve also found five people that like absolutely adore. We’re idiots, but like it works.”

It does work, and with that, you’ll be hearing the name Low Hummer a lot more in the future.

Low Hum Announce USA Summer Tour Dates

The Nonfiction Summer Tour 22 kicks off June 28th at Zebullon in LA.

pixeltracker

Low Hum are currently on the final week of an epic UK and European tour with Warpaint, and will be returning home for a quick respite before heading back out on the road for a month-long tour of the United States.

The Nonfiction Summer Tour 22 kicks off June 28th at Zebullon in LA, and will see Low Hum playing songs from the acclaimed new album Nonfiction, which Relix lauded for the way Low Hum's mastermind Collin Desha "carefully balances his catchy, straightforward songs with some deliriously fun studio experimentation-making for a record that's deceptively good."

Fans looking for a preview of the live show can check out the recently released Live at Sunset Sound EP, which features songs from Low Hum's full-length albums Room To Breathe and Nonfiction, shot at the historic Sunset Sound Studios with a captivating light show. The results are six live versions that capture bold new takes of some of the biggest tracks from their two albums.

Low Hum's latest album Nonfiction, was recorded and co-produced with Jon Joseph, and expands upon Desha's kaleidoscopic Lo-fi meets Hi-fi futurism: a mixture of oceanic tranquility, dreampop-like sensibilities, heavy fuzzed-out riffs juxtaposed alongside melodious synth and vocals with refreshing punch. The album won critical attention from the likes of NPR Music, SPIN, American Songwriter, Buzzbands.la, Brooklyn Vegan and Spotify's "Modern Psychedelia" playlist to name a few.

Low Hummer are a fast-rising six piece from Hull that write about their life in deepest darkest East Yorkshire and their place in a world of consumerism and bad news stories sold as gospel. Daniel, Aimee, Steph, Jack, John and Joe came together from the far corners of the city’s tight knit DIY community, established a regular rehearsal home in iconic DIY venue The New Adelphi Club and set about honing their righteous, danceable garage rock before announcing themselves in late 2019 and introducing the world to Low Hummer - this band of misfits from a town left behind.

Low Hummer released their first fuzzed-up garage anthem ‘Don’t You Ever Sleep’ in September 2019 on independent Leeds label Dance To The Radio, followed by second indie-punk single ‘I Choose Live News’ in October. Both singles earned the band support from the likes of Clash, Dork, Gigwise and BBC 6 Music as 6 Music Recommends Track of the Week and a feature on the Roundtable scoring the band a wining 9/10. Following single releases, ‘The Real Thing’, ‘Picture Bliss’ and ‘Sometimes I Wish (I Was A Different Person)’ were championed by Jack Saunders (Radio 1), Huw Stephens (Radio 1), Steve Lamacq (6 Music), Marc Riley (6 Music), Tom Robinson (6 Music), the Amazing Radio A list, NME, Gigwise and Under The Radar Magazine.

Low Hummer have just released their first album single of 2021, ‘Never Enough’, supported by BBC Radio 1’s Jack Saunders and Gemma Bradley, added to Radio 1’s playlist as BBC Introducing’s Track Of The Week and playlisted on Spotify’s New Music Friday UK, Dreampop, melomania, Alt.Rocked and Hot New Bands (Cover Photo). The band look forward to announcing the release of their debut album  Modern Tricks For Living , set for release on Dance To The Radio in September 2021.

“Scuzzed out indie with lashings of synths, their post-punk leaning songwriting has a surreal pop instinct running through it” –  Clash

“Brilliant new garage rock… classic garage rock sounds that join with post-punk fury.” –  Gigwise

“ Its really charming. Great.”  Laura Snapes (The Guardian / Pitchfork - For 6 Music Roundtable)

A Hull band have in the last week signed onto perform with Manic Street Preachers on a nationwide tour of the UK, days since releasing their debut album.

Low Hummer got the call confirming they were to play as the warm-up act at 13 of Manic Street Preachers' tour gigs this autumn on Monday, starting with a trip to Newcastle on Sunday September 26.

"We hope that whatever we do on this tour, we want to represent Hull in the best light, really, and always shout about where we're from, because it's important to us," said guitarist and singer Dan Mawer, 30.

The six piece post-punk group have teamed up with Manic Street Preachers once before, playing at Piece Hall, Halifax, two weeks ago.

"It's something that, as like a local band, it's a different world really to what we're used to, which is playing Adelphi and Polar Bear."

Low Hummer's debut album, 'Modern Tricks for Living', was released on Friday September 17.

Dan taught himself how to play a guitar and started performing at 18.

He said the band, ranging in age from 21 to 34 years old, was "an oddball collective".

"So we started in 2019. I had a couple of songs ready to go and I just felt like 'Okay, who can I get that would be exciting and interesting to work with?'

"I sort of asked a few friends over Christmas if they'd just come into a practice room and I didn't tell them, but I already had some gigs booked.

"So I said 'well, this is working, in it, do you want to play a gig?'"

"And that's how it started from there and we released a couple of singles before lockdown."

He added that for two members, it was the very first time they had played in a band.

"We're all at varying levels of playing instruments.

"Steph who is our keys player learnt to play keys three weeks before our first show, has never played keys in her life. So I suppose that helps the songwriting.

"When you pick up a new thing and it's really exciting, you keep your eyes and ears open to doing anything.

"Whereas when you get technical with it, then you lose that naivety of just chucking your finger on a note and hoping that works well.

"So yeah, we've got a nice balance, I think."

Dan said the band liked to find "old influences" particularly from '70s and '80s music, citing Joy Division and Talking Heads in particular.

Low Hummer played this summer at Reading and Leeds Festival on the BBC Introducing Stage and their tracks have featured on BBC Radio 1 and 6 Music.

Last week, they released their debut album, 'Modern Tricks for Living', which Dan was the main songwriter for.

"It's a really big deal and I've been in bands for 10 years and, and never released sort of a body of work, so that was exciting enough.

"And then this week, finding out that we could support Manics on tour.

"Yeah, it just feels - like it doesn't actually feel real!"

low hummer tour dates

Low Hummer 's first ever gig was at Polar Bear Club and Dan Mawer's own first live performance was at the Adelphi.

"I just want to say thank you for the support," said Dan to all Hull fans of the band.

Hull's a very unique place, like, especially the music scene. It's been really supportive.

"We've had so many nice messages from other bands.

"I feel like that's very like Hull-centric, it is a community that all just want to help each other and push each other along.

Low Hummer's first gig was at Polar Bear Club in Hull. The band comprises Dan Mawer, Joe Ryan, guitarist John Copley, bassist Jack Gallagher, keyboardist/guitarist Stephanie Hebdon, and vocalist/guitarist Aimee Duncan

One of the band's biggest fans is Kelvin Mawer, Dan's dad.

"I’m so proud of him - he’s usually a very quiet and pleasant guy but on stage he’s transformed.

"The only sad part for me is that both Dan and I travel to every home and away game to see Hull City (we even went to Beijing).

"He’s going to have to miss a few games whilst on tour but I will be keeping up to date with the scores and it’s a small sacrifice to realise his dreams."

Low is an American indie rock group from Duluth, Minnesota, formed in 1993 and currently consists of Alan Sparhawk, Mimi Parker and Steve Garrington.

The band formed in early 1993 after Sparhawk had been playing in the Wisconsin band Zen Identity which was formed by drummer Robb Berry and vocalist Bill Walton. The band recruited John Nichols as their bass player. Sparhawk left Zen Identity, who continued to perform and record without him, and he and Nichols recruited Sparhawk's wife Mimi Parker to play a makeshift drum kit composed of a single cymbal and a single floor tom in the outfit that would become Low.

Low's debut album, 'I Could Live in Hope', was released on Virgin Records' Vernon Yard imprint in 1994. The band struggled to make any chart impact however until their 2005 release 'The Great Destroyer' which appeared on the US Billboard Heatseekers Charts and the UK album charts. What the band lacked in commercial chartings over their career they made up for in live reputation, their shows quickly became iconic on the indie circuit. They struggled in the beginning due to the quiet nature of their music being easily overshadowed by audience chatter and background noise.

After this initial hurdle the band found their live stride and began to feature drastically reinterpreted cover versions of famous songs by the likes of Joy Division and The Smiths. In performance, Low shows off a sense of humor not necessarily found on their recordings; a tour in early 2004 featured a cover of OutKast's hit song "Hey Ya." At a gig in Los Angeles on Halloween 1998, the band took the stage as a Misfits tribute act, complete with corpse paint and black clothing.

Their latest release 'The Invisible Way' was considered their most successful international release, charting just outside the UK top 40 album chart and also appeared on charts in countries including Ireland, France and The Netherlands. It was also received well critically, with Metacritic assigning the album an average score 80/100.

Live reviews

I've seen Low perform live several times between the end of last century and more recent times. I love the ethereal atmosphere they effortlessly create, and the way their songs build up, often through minimal repetitious and textural emphasis. The first time I saw them was one of the best live experiences I've had the pleasure of being absorbed into (The Garage, London).

Their first few albums are my favourites and as the set list naturally evolved with their development, as much as I like the newer material, the slower and more minimal stuff was more to my liking, with reverb courtesy of Kramer production! However, the new stuff has built on these principles and perhaps gone into a more feel-good territory, also becoming more accessible.

The live experience is great and perhaps I have just gotten used to seeing them! I've seen them at large spaces such as the Royal Festival Hall (London) but prefer to see them at smaller venues and churches with natural reverb such as Union Chapel (London), for a more intimate affair. They have a subdued somewhat deadpan comedic banter between songs, which provides relief from some of the more intense moments. If you are a fan, I very much doubt you'd be disappointed if you've not seen them before and have an opportunity to!

American indie outfit Low have a huge reputation on the live circuit as one of the most creative and intriguing performers of recent years. Forming back in the early 90s, the group has been on the road for over two decades and have been continuously honing their skills as musicians. Minimalistic arrangements give way to complex guitar riffs as they transport the audience to a celestial world of dream pop.

Sometimes they slow the pace so much that it feels as though they have stopped playing altogether yet it is just another well timed moment as they allow the silence to emphasise the spanning nature of their music. They have never enjoyed huge commercial success in either their homeland or the UK yet they do have a cult-like following in both allowing them total freedom when choosing the setlist. It definitely feels as though they have chosen the most technically brilliant tracks tonight as they close on a magical rendition of 'When I Go Deaf'.

Low's sound continues to grow. From the deeply contemplative sounds of the ethereal bass and ominous drums to the quavering, often exploding guitar, the audience is transported into some kind of other realm, whatever that might be. Their latest album, Double Negative, has a more electronic sound, vague at times, but building as always. The two shows at Brooklyn's National Sawdust provided evidence of Low's continuing evolution, focusing primarily on the moody, drifting music of their latest album, jumping ahead, suddenly loud, with the flip of a switch. They eventually played some of the older material with the developing sound, all of it string and compelling. My only complaint is that both nights had almost the same playlists, only a few songs changed. Here's hoping they make more changes for the third and final night.

This is the second time I saw Low in Toronto, and it was an amazing show!

Alan is such a good guitar player and harmonies Mimi and him sing together are coming from another world. I was wondering how are they going to present new album with a lot of electronics and experimental sounds, but Alan’s shoegaze skills are just unbelievable - I still don’t understand how he manages to control everything with pedals while playing and singing. Very special moment was their super awesome drone rock hit “Do you know how to waltz?”. I feel blessed for witnessing new “Low” era in such an intimate venue of Great Hall Toronto. Can’t wait to see them again soon!

ivangeld’s profile image

This band never ceases to amaze me. I came into this show with tempered expectations given how produced their most recent record is. Some songs were literal representations of what's heard on record; others, however, were much more stripped down and reminded me that no matter how much production paint gets applied in the studio, the songs are still quintessential Low. "Always Up" was a pretty good example of this. The highlight of the SF performance for me had to be the medley of Tempest > Do You Know How To Waltz? Two of my absolute favorites of all time. The house sound and lights were incredible.

tom-janci’s profile image

Small club venue for the show turned out to be an intimate evening with Low. Sound and lighting was good. The renditions of Double Negative songs was brilliant, and we got the treat of Do You Know How To Waltz, followed by segue into Lazy. Also did favorites Sunflower and Especially Me, so I happy boy! Set was over 90 minutes, and I got to chat with Mimi after show. Opener EMA was experimental with PJ Harvey influence...good start to evening! Even met some new friends...Gary and Irma, you guys rock!

Fantastic show yesterday evening at the Epicerie Moderne.

A wide place offered to Double Negative but also a lot of classics (Lazy, Nothing but Heart, Holy Ghost, No Comprende, What Part of Me) and a great version of 'Do you know how to waltz?'.

Alan, Mimi and Steve in great shape, a fabulous sound and an audience with a rare listening quality.

I can’t wait to see them again in Nîmes at the « This is not a love song » indie music festival.

Thanks again gor such a great evening.

It was wonderful, the sound, the performance, the visuals. Alan's guitars are truly creative, and the mixing man does his job amazingly. Band's voices'interaction works perfectly. The drone jam in the middle of the session was just in the right moment. It's only a pity that they didn't perform 'Rome'. Thanks MeetFactory and thank you Low!

maxim-zur’s profile image

Alan Sparhawk is an amazing guitarist. Glad I finally got to see him play in person. Also the visuals synced well with the setlist. The diversity in song selection was well chosen also and the 2 hour duration was the perfect amount of songs to include in one night. Beautiful show on all fronts.

bratty-fosho’s profile image

❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ uncompromising concert - it was mind blowing. As the set list unfolded it went from an intellectual journey to a very physical experience. The album double negative dominated. But we stayed Just barely on the right side of positive the whole time
