Alex Albon on Japan, Jumeirah and Getting Just About Enough Sleep

The Formula One driver sits down ahead of the British Grand Prix to touch on some of his tips to travel like a seasoned vet.

By Toby Louch

Alex Albon

I was standing in a gleaming express elevator on the way to the 14 th floor of The Carlton Tower Jumeirah in London’s Knightsbridge . To the uninitiated, Knightsbridge is a hotbed of affluence and eyewatering property prices, this is about as prime as London real estate gets. From the entrance of the hotel — which currently features a full-size Williams Formula One car — a well-aimed throw could smash the windows at Harrods .

The car is here because it’s the British Grand Prix weekend, and since the beginning of this season, Jumeirah Hotels & Resorts have sponsored the Williams Formula One team. It’s not just the car that’s gracing The Carlton Tower with its presence, Williams Formula One driver Alex Albon is also in town.

Few worlds intertwine as perfectly as Formula One motor racing and luxury travel. Since the sport’s inception — at the beginning of the 1950s — drivers have been jet-setting across the globe, to some of the world’s most glamorous locations, risking life and limb behind the wheel. From Monaco to Miami , Formula One drivers travel aboard super yachts or expensive sports cars , decked out in hundred-thousand-dollar watches all in the name of thrilling the thousands of baying fans that have come to watch them race.

Alex Albon at Silverstone

This years Formula One season began in Bahrain with Albon gaining a point for finishing in 10 th position, a strong performance for Williams against the behemoths of Red Bull, Ferrari and Mercedes . Bahrain is also where the team announced a new partnership with the renowned Jumeirah Hotels & Resorts, citing a shared love of innovation, quality, and excellence.

Albon is holed up inside one of The Carlton Tower’s glamourous suites, the views stretch out across Belgravia , the private garden of Cadogan Place Park, and onwards to South London. He’s relaxed and totally at ease, surprising because he’s about to do a Q & A session with 200 Formula One fans many of whom are already on their second glass of champagne . Then again, he does drive round corners at 170 mph for a living.

“This year’s been a bit of an up, down and then up situation for us,” Albon tells me. “We started the first race scoring a point which was amazing but then had a bit of a lull where our rivals out developed us. Now new upgrades have arrived, and we have been competitive again for the last two races.”

Recent performances have bolstered Williams’s confidence. Albon showed a little uncertainty ahead of the British Grand Prix the following weekend, aware the car had been improved but also that the Silverstone racetrack was not best suited to Williams. At the time of our conversation, he was unaware he would go on to have arguably his finest performance of the season thus far, with a decisive qualifying performance placing him 8 th on the grid.

Albon Formula One Car

For a driver, the calendar is grueling to say the least. The 2023 season is set to see the most races in history with 23 full weekends. This season also brings the most US-based races ever with teams heading stateside on three separate occasions to race in Miami, Texas and Las Vegas .

“The Formula One boom has hit every country we travel to, particularly the US,” says Albon. “There are 450,000 plus turning up to each race, most new sponsors are American , it’s great for the sport.”

The Jumeirah and Williams partnership appears to be a match made in heaven. The Middle East has played a significant role in the Formula One calendar for some time now, and Jumeirah has a presence in Bahrain, Saudi Arabia , Abu Dhabi and of course Dubai.

“We had pre-season testing in Bahrain, followed by a week off. [Jumeirah Gulf of Bahrain Resort & Spa] is in the middle of nowhere, but in a good way,” adds Albon. “It was the perfect way to unwind and start of the season with a clear head. The gym and training facilities at Jumeirah hotels are always really good, so we spent a lot of time in there.”

Several days after speaking with Albon I had a full tour of The Carlton Tower – its Peak Fitness Club & Spa is one of the most impressive I have seen. With state-of-the-art facilities, jaw-dropping views and an extremely limited and exclusive membership that comes with a fee to match, Albon’s “Really good,” may be underselling it somewhat.

Alex Albon Formula One Car

Spending the majority of his year jet-setting across the world as a Formula One driver, needing to function at absolute peak performance, Albon knows a thing or two about traveling. “It’s not holiday talk, but my number one tip is to be organized,” says Albon. “There are only a few drivers that have the ability to fly private everywhere. On our side, we are always double checking we are flying with the best airlines , on the newest planes.”

“One of the biggest issues we face is jetlag, some races on back-to-back weekends see us face a nine-hour time zone change. When you’re driving at our speeds, reaction time is so important,” says Albon. To combat this, the team uses a sleep doctor who gives each driver a schedule of when to sleep, stop eating, and take melatonin, all to ensure the conditions for good quality rest are met. “For melatonin, I use cherry extract, it’s a natural product that works well for me,” Albon adds.

Alex Albon Helmet

Pressed for time and already running late, with 200 people downstairs presumably moving onto their 3 rd glass, a member of Albon’s team steps in to bring things to a close. “Is there a destination you love traveling to particularly for its food and culture,” I try my luck with a final question.

“ Japan . Amazing people, very respectful. Some of the best food in the world, I am half Thai , so I love Asian food. We always try to get there as early as we can to explore,” says Albon.

The short few minutes I spoke to Albon gave a glimpse into the life of a Formula One driver. In short, it’s extremely busy. He had numerous engagements that day ranging from several one on one interviews, a mid-sized Q & A at The Carlton Tower and a chaotic public meet and greet I later saw on his Instagram story. His team is always close by, guiding him between public appearances, training, the airport and so on. Then most Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, he jumps into a $15 million race car and drives it as fast as he possibly can. It’s no wonder Williams has its own sleep doctor.

Formula 1 Racing Is One of the Most Exciting Sports to Travel for — Here's the 2024 Lineup

With three big races in the U.S. and many more abroad, this is the year to plan a trip around F1.

formula elite travel

As the global phenomenon of “sports tourism” continues to surge, 2024 promises to be a year full of opportunities to create unforgettable travel memories, from the Olympic Games in Paris to the European Football Championships in Germany. There are plenty of reasons to plan a trip around a major sporting event and, for me, Formula One offers a special opportunity to explore a city at a time when you will find a truly unique atmosphere.

Unlike traveling for a one-off sports game, F1 is built around a weekend of action where you can truly feel the excitement and anticipation build as the weekend progresses from practice to qualifying, and then, of course, to race day itself. With 24 incredible race locations set in highly diverse cities, no two F1 races share the same backdrop — from deserts to lakes and from mountains to marinas, the F1 2024 calendar is packed with iconic race tracks.

For those looking for an excuse to finally book that overseas trip of a lifetime, F1 offers multiple race destinations across Europe, the Middle East, Asia. and South America; there really is something for everyone.

For those looking to stay closer to home, following the hugely successful 2023 Las Vegas Strip debut, the 2024 F1 calendar will once again showcase more races on U.S. soil than any other country. I attended last year's Vegas race weekend , and MGM Resorts International just announced my favorite place to watch is returning for year two: the Bellagio Fountain Club, offering unobstructed views of the Winner's Stage and the Strip, indoor and outdoor entertainment areas, open bars, and unlimited food by top chefs that will include Mario Carbone, David Chang, Jean-Georges Vongerichten, and more in 2024. ( Tickets just went on sale .) Joining Sin City to complete the U.S. lineup this year are Miami and Austin.

When attending races within driving distance, I recommend taking it to the next level and supercharging your race weekend journey by renting a luxury sports car from your favorite F1 manufacturer. Why not arrive in style?

Below, find the F1 grand prix lineup for the rest of 2024, and start planning your trip.

Formula Rossa Review: How Scary Is The World’s Fastest Rollercoaster?

  • February 6, 2024 February 6, 2024
  • by Elite Travel Blog

Find out what it was like to ride the fastest rollercoaster in the world, the 10 fastest rollercoasters in the world and the history of the Formula Rossa

Formula Rossa Review

Here are the 15 fastest rollercoasters in the world, faqs about the formula rossa rollercoaster, formula rossa history.

I’ve only been on two rollercoasters in my life. The first, a tiny rollercoaster near Glasgow.

And the second was the world’s fastest rollercoaster … The Formula Rossa in Abu Dhabi.

Formula Rossa review

I was in Abu Dhabi on a work trip and we went to Ferrari World. Early on the trip, I said I would not be riding it with the rest of the group, after my first rollercoaster experience.

Rewind to when I was 15. My friend (who loves rollercoasters) wanted to sit at the front and I agreed for some reason.

I dropped the f bomb all the way through it. Especially the loop.

Fast forward 18 years later and I’m wearing goggles on the Formula Rossa.

Goggles? Why the hell do I need goggles?! How fast is this thing?

Turns out the Formula Rossa accelerates from 0-149mph in 4.9 seconds… Oh boy. How do F1 drivers cope!? You actually reach 4.8Gs.

Nothing can prepare you for the acceleration. Midway through the acceleration, the sound in my ears turned to a high pitched ringing. I don’t remember seeing all that much either.

Before I knew it, we were going up the incline. Such is the force, my torso jolted forward. I was stuck at a 45 degree angle. I was unable to ‘right’ myself back until we hit the top of the incline.

After that, it was just a series of highs (of 52m) and lows. I actually enjoyed myself on this part of the ride as I could finally relax. So really the only thrilling part of the ride is the initial acceleration.

So, how scary is the world’s fastest rollercoaster? Not that scary. I found Hyperspace Mountain at Disneyland Paris scarier!

Overall, I’m glad I can say I did it!

1. What is the Formula Rossa rollercoaster?

The Formula Rossa rollercoaster is a thrilling and record-breaking attraction located at Ferrari World Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates. It is renowned as the world’s fastest rollercoaster, offering an exhilarating experience to its riders.

2. How fast does the Formula Rossa rollercoaster go?

The Formula Rossa rollercoaster reaches an astonishing top speed of 240 kilometers per hour (149 miles per hour) in just 4.9 seconds. This incredible speed replicates the adrenaline rush of a Formula One racing car.

3. What is the height and length of the Formula Rossa rollercoaster?

The Formula Rossa rollercoaster stands at a height of 52 meters (171 feet) and spans a track length of 2.2 kilometers (1.4 miles). Its towering structure and extensive track make it a visually striking and thrilling ride.

4. How many riders can the Formula Rossa rollercoaster accommodate?

The Formula Rossa rollercoaster can accommodate up to 16 riders per train. Each train consists of four cars, with four riders seated in each car.

5. What is the g-force of Formula Rossa?

Formula Rossa exerts a maximum g-force of 4.8 g during the ride. This means that riders can experience forces up to 4.8 times their own body weight. This can be felt during acceleration, drops, and other intense sections of the coaster.

6. What safety measures are in place on the Formula Rossa rollercoaster?

To ensure the safety of riders, the Formula Rossa rollercoaster features secure lap bars and high-quality restraint systems. Additionally, riders are required to wear protective goggles to shield their eyes from the intense wind force during the ride.

7. Is there an age or height restriction to ride the Formula Rossa rollercoaster?

Yes, there are restrictions in place. Riders must be at least 1.3 meters (4.3 feet) tall to experience the Formula Rossa rollercoaster. There may also be age restrictions, and riders may need to be accompanied by an adult if they do not meet the minimum age requirement.

8. How long is the duration of the Formula Rossa rollercoaster ride?

The duration of the Formula Rossa rollercoaster ride is approximately 1 minute and 32 seconds. Despite its short duration, the ride provides an intense and thrilling experience from start to finish.

9. What is the theme or concept behind the Formula Rossa rollercoaster?

The Formula Rossa rollercoaster is themed around the world of Formula One racing, taking inspiration from Ferrari’s racing heritage. The ride aims to recreate the excitement and speed of a Formula One car, allowing riders to feel like they’re racing on a track.

10. Are there any special effects on the Formula Rossa rollercoaster?

While the primary focus of the Formula Rossa rollercoaster is on its speed and exhilarating track layout, there are no notable special effects incorporated into the ride experience.

11. Is there a height or weight limit for riders on the Formula Rossa rollercoaster?

While there is no specific weight limit mentioned, riders must meet the minimum height requirement of 1.3 meters (4.3 feet). Additionally, riders must fit securely within the ride’s restraint systems for their own safety.

Construction on this high-speed attraction began in 2008 and was completed in 2010. The roller coaster was designed by Intamin, a renowned manufacturer of amusement park rides.

The idea behind the Formula Rossa roller coaster was to create an experience that emulated the speed and exhilaration of a Formula One race. With a top speed of 240 kilometers per hour (149 miles per hour), it certainly delivers on that promise. To achieve this incredible speed, the roller coaster utilizes a hydraulic launch system, similar to the technology used in Formula One cars.

During the construction process, meticulous attention was paid to safety and precision. The track layout was carefully designed to maximize speed and excitement while ensuring the safety of riders. The coaster’s trains, designed to resemble Formula One cars, were meticulously crafted to provide a comfortable yet thrilling experience.

The Formula Rossa roller coaster officially opened to the public in November 2010, becoming an instant sensation and a must-visit attraction for thrill-seekers. It holds the distinction of being the fastest roller coaster in the world, offering an unparalleled adrenaline rush to all who dare to ride.

Since its opening, the Formula Rossa roller coaster has become an iconic landmark and a symbol of technological innovation. It continues to attract visitors from around the globe, drawn by the allure of its breathtaking speed and exhilarating twists and turns.

Formula Belva Double-Crown Enduro Fork Delivers Light, Supple Precision – First Rides

F ormula wants us to rethink long-travel enduro and freeride forks with their new double-crown Belva. Sharing the same lowers and much of the same internals tech as their Selva all-mountain to enduro single-crown forks, this new Belva takes lightweight suspension to a new level of performance. This is not a DH fork – they’ve got the Nero for that. And it’s not even longer travel than the biggest Selva. Instead, this stiffer double-crown fork is built to help you push your enduro bike harder than ever.

Formula Belva 170/180mm double-crown enduro/freeride fork

Formula spent the past several years behind the scenes transforming their popular 35mm-stanchion single-crown Selva platform into a lightweight double-crown enduro fork. They set out to create a double-crown fork as light or lighter than any equally long single-crown enduro fork. But tougher, more supple, and stiffer where it matters.

More mountain bike riders are pushing enduro bikes harder and further than ever before. Freeride isn’t dead. It just somehow got blended in with a type of riding we do on bikes that we sometimes pedal to the top of the mountain. You’ll find more ‘enduro’ bikes and single-crown forks in bike parks most days than proper DH bikes with double-crowns. You even see riders at Rampage sending off cliffs on single-crown enduro forks.

So suspension makers had to keep beefing up their single crowns to handle the 170mm, 180mm & 190mm of single-crown travel that modern enduro buyers demanded.

But really, why?

For Formula, it wasn’t about bigger travel, or necessarily saving a bunch of weight.

Their engineers just knew that building a double-crown meant eliminating the inherent structural cantilever issue where a single crown, steerer & stanchions come together. This is simply the point where most single-crown flex is going to occur, no matter how big the stanchions get.

So with the same 35mm diameter stanchions, Formula could significantly reduce flex and achieve more supple suspension action. Plus, they could lower stack if they wanted with a much shorter/thinner lower crown. They could deliver more precise and connected direct-mount steering. And all at very little additional weight.

This fork weighs about 400g more than the lightest 170mm 29er Selva S – at a claimed 2370g for the new Belva. But that’s still said to be lighter than either a 38mm-stanchion RockShox Zeb or Fox 38, either with 180mm of travel.

Formula doesn’t really push the adjustable axle-to-crown aspect as their initial push it to work with getting the new fork as a simple direct-swap on existing bikes without changing suspension characteristics. But the double-crown inherently gives riders ~1cm of a-c adjustment. That means you can probably replicate the setup of your existing fork exactly. But its much shorter-stack lower crown also means you could probably swap in a 180mm fork in the same a-c height of your current 170mm fork, without changing ride height or bike geometry. There’s simply much more opportunity for customized setup with a double-crown. And Formula could easily lower stack on the lower crown by another centimeter if they wanted (or if there was demand.)

Tech details

The dual-crown Belva enduro fork delivers either 170mm or 180mm of internally adjustable travel. The air spring fork keeps weight low with new 35mm double-butted 7075 aluminum stanchions and lightweight hollow-forged alloy crowns.

Pair that to the same cast magnesium lowers as the Selva – for bonus modularity.

It features the same single air spring tech and steel triple-coil negative spring as its Selva S sibling, volume spacer adjustability. As well as the same drop-in Internal Floating Tech cartridge damper, with Formula’s signature rider-customizable CTS compression tuning system. Plus, a lock-out lever on top of the right crown – an easy reach just under your bar since it’s a double-crown.

The 29″ wheel Belva fork gets a 43mm offset, 15x110mm QR Boost thru-axle, and a 1.5″ tapered aluminum steerer. And it is built for big travel enduro ebikes, as well.

How does it ride?

Two and a half years ago when I first tested a prototype of this double-crown fork , I rode away pretty amazed. The fork was just so smooth and handling so precise, that I felt like my personal skill level had instantly notched up a level.

It’s not nearly as stiff as a DH fork. But this is meant for a lighter, shorter travel, more maneuverable bike. One that you are likely to pedal back uphill sometimes, too. It truly felt like it soaked up hits better than every single crown fork I had ridden previously. So it gave me extra confidence to bomb root-strewn tracks and air it out a bit higher on the buff jump lines.

One of the biggest obstacles to riding a double-crown enduro fork though, is mental. It’s impossible not to see those stanchions extend up next to your headtube. And to know that you can only turn your bars about 30° to either side. It’s a real limit that must be contended with. No big casual whips, at least until you learn how to better-control the bike in the air than I do.

On the other hand, flying down rooted DH tracks, rocky bike park trails, and blasting berms at ungodly speeds – that’s a non-issue.

Yet riding steep, slow technical trail is a different story. I’ve already seen, first with internal lock-block bikes, and more recently riding the KIS-equipped Canyon on my local trails, that a change in how you turn the bar can require real rethinking of how you tackle certain terrain.

But I’m pretty sure that the confidence-inspiring ride I’ve already experienced riding the Formula Belva fork is worth that trade-off. And I want to ride it more, on more types of trails and terrain.

2024 Formula Belva fork – Pricing, options & availability

Formula offers the new double-crown Formula Belva fork with matte black or signature Ultraviolet purple lowers and hard anodized black stanchions. The new fork retails for 1850€, not exactly affordable, right? ( Noticeably, almost 250-600€ more than the most-expensive Zeb or 38 . )

But the bigger issue might be availability… if you just can’t resist the double-crown enduro temptation.

Formula knows this is a relatively niche fork. And they know everyone isn’t going to run out to switch from a single-crown to a double-crown. So they are only gradually ramping up production, and these are going to be available in limited supply. And working with a few select OEM partners like Propain to get them as an option on complete bikes & eMTBs.

I personally would love to get one and put it to a long-term test in my hometown bikepark and on our steepest, gnarliest local trails. But even I will probably have to wait until midsummer to spend more time on this lovely new Belva.

Meet the four teams headed to Boston for men’s Sweet 16 and Elite Eight games this week

UConn's Cam Spencer (left) drove to the basket against Northwestern in the second round.

We’re a couple of steps closer to the men’s basketball national title game, with the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament complete.

The field for the East Regional at TD Garden is set. This week, four teams and their fan bases will descend on Boston to play Sweet 16 and Elite Eight games with a spot in the Final Four on the line.

As expected, No. 1 overall seed UConn made it to Boston. Joining the Huskies are No. 2 seed Iowa State, No. 3 seed Illinois, and No. 5 seed San Diego State.

Here’s a quick look at the four teams, how they got here, and when they’ll play. The regional final will be Saturday, starting after 6 p.m. (tip times will be announced later this week).

Connecticut

Dan Hurley's Huskies have lost only three games this year.

Next game: vs. San Diego State, 7:39 p.m. Thursday (TBS/truTV)

UConn, the top overall seed in this year’s bracket, didn’t sweat much in its first two games. After opening with a 91-52 thumping of No. 16 Stetson , the Huskies easily dispatched No. 9 Northwestern , 75-58, at one point holding a 30-point lead in the second half.

Three big men have anchored the Huskies: 6-foot-5-inch guard Tristen Newton, in his final season in Storrs, Conn.; 6-4 grad student guard Cam Spencer; and 7-2 center Donovan Clingan, a sophomore. The three combined for 45 points in Sunday’s win. Joining them in the starting rotation is Southborough’s Alex Karaban , a 6-8 forward who is averaging 13.7 points per game.

Coach Dan Hurley has the Huskies in prime position to become the first back-to-back champs since Florida in 2006-07. They’ve lost only three times this season: In December to Kansas and Seton Hall, and in February when fellow Sweet 16 team Creighton knocked them out of a No. 1 ranking with an upset in Nebraska.

The Huskies are averaging nearly 18 points a game more than their opponents — the fourth-best differential in Division 1.

“We are bulletproof,” Hurley said Sunday night. “Again, elite offense, elite defense.”

San Diego State

Jaedon LeDee (right) has his Aztecs in a national championship rematch.

Next game: vs. UConn, 7:39 p.m. Thursday (TBS/truTV)

The Aztecs survived a first-round scare from No. 12 Alabama-Birmingham and easily handled would-be Cinderella Yale , a 13 seed, on Sunday, 85-57. Their run through the first weekend sets up a rematch of last year’s national championship game.

Jaedon LeDee is the key to San Diego State’s offense. The senior forward is averaging 21.5 points per game — 10th-best in Division 1 — and totaled 58 points over the Aztecs’ first two games. What’s his secret?

“Just staying focused,” he said after Sunday’s game. “That’s really all it is. Just out there playing and executing the game plan and letting it flow to my teammates. That’s really all I’m doing out there.”

Coach Brian Dutcher has his team in its fourth straight NCAA Tournament and fifth in the seven seasons he’s been at the helm.

Terrence Shannon (right) sued his school to overturn his suspension for a 2023 rape case.

Next game: vs. Iowa State, 10:09 p.m. Thursday (TBS/truTV)

Third-seeded Illinois had a smooth ride into the Sweet 16, dispatching Morehead State with a 16-point win in the first round and blowing out 11th-seeded Duquesne to make it to Boston.

Success has been complicated for the Fighting Illini, who enter TD Garden on the back of Terrence Shannon Jr., the star senior guard who is still facing rape charges in Kansas. Shannon scored a combined 56 points across the two wins.

Coach Brad Underwood leads the Big Ten tournament champions into the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2005, which also was the last time Illinois won the conference tournament before Underwood arrived.

The Illini boast the ninth-best scoring offense in the country this season, and their path to the Final Four runs through their offense — and in particular Shannon.

Hason Ward (right) attended Springfield Central and is now shining for the Cyclones.

Next game: vs. Illinois, 10:09 p.m. Thursday (TBS/truTV)

The Cyclones had a slightly trickier run to the East Regional, with seventh-seeded Washington State keeping things close for much of the Round of 32 matchup before Iowa State pulled away. The Big 12 tournament champions boast a more balanced scoring attack than their Sweet 16 opponent — no Cyclone scored more than 19 points in either of their wins thus far — and rely on one of the nation’s best defenses.

Under coach T.J. Otzelberger, Iowa State allowed just 61.2 points per game this season, fourth-best in the nation, setting up a classic matchup between an elite offense and an elite defense.

The Cyclones received a nice boost from Springfield Central grad Hason Ward, who has scored 17 points in 25 minutes across their two wins thus far.
