Synopsis [ ]

Ash carelessly makes enemies of the Slowpoke-worshipping residents of a town, but sees a chance at redemption when Team Rocket arrives to capture each and every one of these revered Pokémon. [1]

Episode plot [ ]

The heroes are walking on a hot day, noticing the plants are dried off. To cool them down, Misty sends Staryu, who uses Water Gun in the sky. Ash sends Squirtle to do the same, but gets pushed onto a rock by its own Water Gun. Team Rocket are also thirsty, so Meowth drinks from his cantine. Jessie and James also want to drink, but Meowth drank all the water. Jessie and James are angry, so Meowth points at the well, so they run to it. Meowth pulls the lever, but sand comes out. James feels there must be water around, so Meowth uses some rods to detect a source of water. After they walk, Meowth's rods move, making Jessie and James willing to dig. Since they get exhausted, Meowth activates a robot to shovel. They dig deep and fall down, but detect water. They drink the water, but detect some Pokémon, some Slowpoke.

Meowth detects a sign, which reads that it is a well Slowpoke inhabit, which can cause rain by yawning. Team Rocket understand their importance and plan to capture them and sell them to townsfolk. Team Rocket go to get them, but Slowpoke slip away from their grasp, so Meowth goes to use his secret weapon from the robot. The heroes come to Azalea Town. Ash thinks he should win the Gym Badge, but Misty argues with him, as delivering the GS Ball is much more important. Brock reads that public institutions (including the Gym) are closed due to the drought. So, the heroes go to seek Kurt. As they go through the town, the gang notices a lot of Slowpoke around. Ash accidentally stomps on Slowpoke's tail, but apologizes. The townspeople gather and chase them away, believing they are criminals for hurting Slowpoke, while a man, dressed as Slowpoke, watches.

The heroes stop, seeing they lost the townspeople from sight. They see a Slowpoke and do not believe it talks, since it warns them to put Slowpoke disguises on. The townspeople gather and search for the gang, then leave. Ash, Misty and Brock had disguised themselves and thank the man. The man tells them that Slowpoke are valued here greatly, since it came and yawned to bring rain to the town, saving it from drought. Misty asks why is he dressed as a Slowpoke. He tells that he does not want to scare the Slowpoke and remembers he had to do some business, leaving the gang alone. The man follows a strange sound and comes to a cave and falls down a chasm, then sees Team Rocket chasing the Slowpoke. He warns them, so the robot turns around and chases him. The man runs away, but stops after he gets a pain in the back.

The heroes come to Kurt's house and encounter a girl. They ring, but the girl tells Kurt will not be back for some time, as she is his granddaughter. She remembers he had to go to search for a source for noise, so tells the heroes of the cave. The heroes enter it and find the man in Slowpoke suit, who points at the robot, in which Team Rocket control it to capture Slowpoke. The man tells them to save Slowpoke. Ash and Pikachu come down and Pikachu goes to use Thunderbolt, but Team Rocket warns him the floor is wet, so he'd electrocute Slowpoke, too. Ash sends Heracross, who stops the machine and tosses it. However, Team Rocket release a fist, hitting Heracross. Ash calls it back, while Team Rocket dig in the ground to get away. Slowpoke yawn and get out of the cave, then yawn again.

This causes a storm to appear, pleasing the townspeople. The heroes go on a roof, since the water accumulates and goes in the cave, into the hole Team Rocket made. This causes a wave to get Team Rocket out of the cave to the heroes, as Pikachu's Thunder blasts them off. The Slowpoke unite, making the heroes wonder if Slowpoke's yawning caused the rain. The man admits that this was a strange, mysterious event. The man sees everything is well and offers them a tour of the town. Misty tells they need to find a man named Kurt, so the man takes off the Slowpoke hood and introduces himself as Kurt, who asks why did they come to him.

Today on their adventure, Ash & Co. are wandering along in the baking sun, hot and thirsty. Misty has an idea and sends out Staryu , ordering it to use Water Gun to cool them off. It aims up in the air and sprays, causing the water to fall like rain. Ash follows her lead, sending Squirtle out and ordering it to use Water Gun too. It takes this the wrong way, spraying a jet of water straight at Ash, sending him crashing into a huge rock a few feet away.

Team Rocket are also in the same situation. Jessie and James notice Meowth having a drink of water and ask for their share. He hands them the canteen, but it's empty, angering the two. He then points into the distance towards a well. Jessie thinks it's a trick, but James sees it too. They rush over. Meowth tries to pump some water up, with Jessie and James waiting expectantly at the spout, but all that emerges is a stream of sand; the well has dried up. Meowth pulls out a set of divining rods to help them find an underground spring. After a short walk the rods move apart, so he tells them where to dig. After a few second, they tire out, so Meowth produces a remote control. Upon pressing a button, a giant Diglett robot appears from below ground. After entering the machine, they begin digging down in search of water. It isn't long before they crash down through the roof of a large cavern. Exiting the machine they notice a large underground lake. They rush over and take a long awaited drink. After doing so, they notice hundreds of pairs of glowing, red eyes watching them through the darkness. They huddle together for safety. James, wondering what they are, shines a torch towards the nearest pair of eyes, revealing it to be a Slowpoke . He begins to wonder why they are all down there, when Meowth discovers a sign welcoming them to the Slowpoke Well . After reading from the sign and discovering that, according to local folklore, the Slowpoke of the well have the ability to end a drought just by Yawn ing, they decide to steal the Pokémon. They attempt to grab the Slowpoke, but they just slip away. Meowth decides to deploy a secret weapon.

Arriving just outside Azalea Town , Ash & Co. cross a bridge, noticing the river below has dried up. Ash is eager to get to the Gym, but Misty reminds him that they have to deliver the G/S Ball to Kurt first. He says that he will do it once they have been to the Gym, saying that it can wait, but she asks why going to the Gym can't wait instead. As they argue, Brock notices a sign informing that, due to the drought, water conservation measures are in place. As such, all schools, public buildings and the Gym are closed until further notice. Hearing this, Ash decides that they had better deliver the G/S Ball.

As they wander through the town, they notice Slowpoke all over the place. Ash accidentally treads on ones tail. He apologises and they continue walking. After a delayed reaction, the Slowpoke sits up, cradling it's injured tail. One of the townspeople notices the Slowpoke and cries out, causing most of the town to appear and gang up on Ash & Co. They angrily chase after them, intent on getting revenge for the Slowpoke.

They manage to outrun the mob, arriving in a park where a man dressed as a Slowpoke hands them some Slowpoke costumes, ordering them to put them on. When they hear the mob approaching, they take his advice. The mob arrives but, unable to find Ash & Co. leave a few minutes later. Ash thanks the man, who explains that the people of the town treat Slowpoke like gold. Brock asks why, so the man tells them that almost 400 years ago, there was a drought in Azalea Town just like current one. It continued for ages, but one day a Slowpoke appeared. As the people watched it, it yawned. As soon as it had done so, the skies clouded and for the first time in ages, rain fell, saving the whole town. Since then the people of Azalea Town have treated all Slowpoke with great honour and respect. Misty asks why he is dressed as a Slowpoke. He begins to explain himself, when he remembers something. He excuses himself and runs off.

The man arrives at his destination, the Slowpoke Well, when he notices Team Rocket's Diglett robot chasing the Slowpoke around. He tries to stop them, but since he is still dressed as a Slowpoke, they mistake him for one and charge at him. He attempts to run, but hurts his back and is knocked down.

Wandering about, Ash & Co. come across a little girl. They ask her if she knows where Kurt lives, so she points at the house they are stood outside of. They thanks her and try the intercom. She tells them that he won't be back until later in the day. Ash asks if she is his next door neighbour, but she tells them that she is his granddaughter. They ask her if she knows where he went. She replies, telling them that he went to the Slowpoke Well. Misty asks her how long ago he left, but the girl can't remember. She does however tell them that he went down after hearing an odd noise coming from the well and went down to investigate.

Ash & Co. arrive at the Slowpoke Well. As they walk inside they hear a groaning and find the man in the Slowpoke costume sprawled out on the ground. Brock asks him what he's doing, but he says there is no time to explain as there is a giant robot going after the Slowpoke. Going further into the well, they see the robot catch a group of Slowpoke in a net. Team Rocket them emerge from the top, reciting their motto. They launch more nets, grabbing even more Slowpoke. The man in the Slowpoke costume asks Ash to save the Pokémon. He gets ready to order Pikachu to use Thunderbolt , but Team Rocket point out that an electrical attack will shock all of the Slowpoke in the well too. He sends in Heracross , who somehow manages to lift the robot and toss it through the air. As it flies through the air, Meowth launches a missile, knocking Heracross down. Ash recalls it. Team Rocket, deciding they have caught all of the Slowpoke they need, tunnel away in their machine. With the threat gone, the rest of the Slowpoke start making their way out of the well and up onto a cliff overlooking the well's entrance. They all sit down as one and yawn. Suddenly a storm brews and the rain finally comes. As the rain drains into the Slowpoke well, a torrent of water rushes down the hole Team Rocket created, washes their machine out of the ground and breaks it in half. As the Trio emerge from the top half of their robot, they notice Ash and Pikachu watching them. He orders it to use Thunder , sending Team Rocket blasting off again. The captured Slowpoke escape from the bottom half, reuniting with the others.

Later that day, back in town, Brock notices that both the townspeople and the Slowpoke seem happy that the rain has arrived. The man in the Slowpoke costume thanks them, declaring them the town's new heroes and telling them that everyone now realises that they injured the Slowpoke by accident. He offers to give them a tour of the town, but Misty tells him that they have to find a man named Kurt. The man removes the head of his costume, declaring that he is Kurt and asking why they are looking for him.

As Ash and his friends stop on their way to the Azalea Gym because of the blaring heat. Misty calls out Staryu and has it use its Water Gun like a fountain to cool the trio off, and they play in the water. Seeing this, Ash calls out his own Water Pokémon, Squirtle. However, Squirtle's Water Gun attack sends Ash flying into a nearby boulder.

Team Rocket is on the road also, and very thirsty. Jessie and James want their share of water from their canteen, but Meowth drank it already. They get mad at him, but Meowth soon spots a well nearby, its base is carved to look like a Slowpoke. Meowth pumps the well lever for a bit, but Jessie and James receive a face full of sand instead of water. Next, Meowth tries a pair of divining rods. He soon finds a likely spot and tells Jessie and James to dig, but they soon become too exhausted from the soaring temperature. Meowth brings out a remote control, and their latest mecha, the Super Diglett Mark Two, appears. Jessie angrily hits him with her shovel before they all climb aboard and dig into the ground. The trio eventually reach a large underground chamber that contains a sparkling pool of water. They rush out of their machine to take a drink, only to notice that they're surrounded by many Slowpoke. Meowth finds a sign that says this is the Slowpoke Well, and local legend has it that Slowpoke have the power to make it rain when they yawn. Team Rocket makes a plan to capture the Slowpoke and get rich by charging the townspeople to have them make it rain.

Meanwhile, Ash's group have finally reached Azalea Town. They notice that the river has run dry because of a recent drought. Ash wants to go to the Azalea Gym, but Misty reminds him about his errand to give the GS Ball to Kurt. They argue for a bit, then Brock reads a sign that says the Gym is also closed because of the drought. The trio decide to look around town for Kurt instead.

Azalea Town seems strange, as Ash comments on the many signs depicting Slowpoke plus the multiple Slowpoke lying everywhere. While walking, Ash accidentally steps on a Slowpoke's tail. Slowpoke has a delayed response to the pain, but a local happened to witness Ash step on Slowpoke and soon a mob of angry townspeople arrive to chase Ash's group out of town. They manage to lose the crowd temporarily in a park, then a man wearing a Slowpoke costume catches the group’s attention. He then tells them to put on some Slowpoke costumes and sit still. The people reach the park and give up their search after only seeing four Slowpoke sitting by a fountain. Brock then asks the stranger why Slowpoke are so important, and the man explains that 400 years ago there was a drought just like this in Azalea Town. One day a Slowpoke came to the town, and when it yawned it started to rain and the town was saved. Since then, Slowpoke have been treated with respect. Misty then asks the man why he is wearing a Slowpoke costume, and he explains that it is too avoid scaring the Slowpoke away. Suddenly the man remembers that he has an errand to run and quickly leaves.

At the Slowpoke cave, the man hears something happening and goes to investigate. He sees Team Rocket in their machine chasing the Slowpoke and yells at them to stop, but they mistake him for a large Slowpoke because he is still wearing his costume and chase after him. He hurts his back trying to run away. In town, Ash and his friends continue their search for Kurt. A little girl, who turns out to be Kurt's granddaughter, informs them that Kurt isn't home and that he went to check out something at the Slowpoke Well.

The three friends go to the well and enter the cave, and find the man lying on the ground. He tells them about the giant machine. Ash and Misty run ahead while Brock helps the injured man to his feet. Ash quickly realizes that the machine belongs to Team Rocket, and the evil trio soon launches into their motto. Team Rocket captures more Slowpoke with nets. Ash then vows to stop them, but James points out that the cave floor is wet and any Electric attacks will shock the Slowpoke. So Ash calls on Heracross instead, and it throws the tank up into the air. However, Team Rocket fires a missile at Heracross, which knocks it out, and Ash has to return it to its Poké Ball. Team Rocket gloats and escapes by digging a tunnel deeper underground.

Unexpectedly, one Slowpoke lets out a large cry and the remaining Slowpoke all stand up and begin to walk out of the cave. Ash, Misty and Brock, carrying the man on his back, follows the Slowpoke outside, and they watch them line up on the edge of a cliff that surrounds the well. One by one they yawn causing storm clouds gather and it starts to rain. The four are forced to climb up onto the roof of the well as the area begins to flood. Water also pours into the cave and down into the tunnel that Team Rocket's machine dug. The machine is washed out of the tunnel, and it breaks in half when it lands on the ground. Team Rocket crawls out of their wrecked machine to see Ash and Pikachu standing in front of them. The trio rush back into the wreck for cover, but Pikachu's Thunder attack sends them blasting off. The captured Slowpoke appear from the mecha's debris uninjured and exchange stares with their fellow Slowpoke.

Brock wonders if the Slowpoke really made it rain. Ash believes they did, and the man simply says that the Pokémon world is full of mysteries. Back in Azalea Town, the river is running again and the crops are recovering. Brock and the others return to the park from earlier and watch as several Slowpoke enjoy a dip in the now filled fountain. The man adds that he managed to calm the townspeople and explained that Ash accidentally stepped on the Slowpoke’s tail. He then offers to take the group on a tour of the town, but Misty says they have to find Kurt. The trio are left in shock after the man takes off his costume head and reveals that he is Kurt.
