2023 Tour Championship purse: Payout info, winner’s share

If you thought this year’s PGA Tour Designated events or LIV Golf Invitationals had big money, think again.

The FedEx Cup bonus pool was bumped up to a staggering $75 million this year meaning the winner of the Tour Championship will go home with a ridiculous $18 million payout .

While we can debate the semantics of the Tour Championship being the richest tournament in pro golf or not (technically the money is all from the FedEx Cup Bonus pool and not official earnings) that’s still a boatload of cash.

Heading into the final round, that $18 million is Viktor Hovland’s to lose as last week’s BMW Championship winner begins Sunday with a six-shot lead at 20 under.

However, Scottie Scheffler began last year’s final round at East Lake with a six-shot lead as well, only to cede it to Rory McIlroy.

Xander Schaufele is Hovland’s closest pursuer at 14 under. Schauffele’s record at East Lake continues to amaze, picking up a win in his first start in 2017 and never finishing outside the top 7 since. But Schaufele has not won the event since it switched to the staggered start format based on FedEx Cup standing.

But even a top-10 finish this week comes with a payday north of $1 million.

With that, here is the complete payout breakdown for the 2023 Tour Championship and FedEx Cup bonus pool. The total prize pool is $75 million

TOUR Championship payout distribution 2023: Prize money, purse

The prize money and TOUR Championship payout distribution for the 30 players in the field at East Lake for the PGA Tour finale.

By Cody Williams | Aug 27, 2023

TOUR Championship - Final Round

The TOUR Championship got underway at East Lake Golf Club on Thursday to begin the final event of the PGA Tour season and the FedEx Cup Playoffs with Scottie Scheffler sitting atop the leaderboard at 10-under thanks to the starting strokes. By the end of the first round, though, he had plenty of competition and had lost his No. 1 spot already.

Since then, last week's BMW Championship winner, Viktor Hovland got rolling and surged to the top of the leaderboard from the No. 2 spot, tied with Collin Morikawa after the first two rounds. But it was Hovland who persisted and, heading into Sunday's final round with everyone competing for their TOUR Championship payout from the enormous $75 million purse on the line, Hovland was six strokes clear of Xander Schauffele in second place and eight strokes clear of the rest of the field.

With a $75 million purse and only 30 players in the field, you can imagine the type of prize money that these players were playing for. But let's take a look at the TOUR Championship payout distribution by finishing position, starting with the truly eye-popping winner's share.

TOUR Championship payout distribution: Winner's prize money in 2023

The winner of the TOUR Championship for the second consecutive year will receive a monstrous $18 million in prize money for their efforts at East Lake. This massive number is obviously for winning the tournament at East Lake but, most importantly, the FedEx Cup as well. With the staggered start and starting strokes to begin the week in Atlanta, these players will have made sure to earn everything -- but especially the winner.

TOUR Championship payout distribution by finishing position

  • $18 million
  • $6.5 million
  • $2.5 million
  • $1.5 million
  • $1.25 million

Suffice it say, making it to East Lake and just getting any part of the TOUR Championship is an extremely popular endeavor. While everyone would like to have the $18 million that the winner receives, finishing in last and still getting a half-million payday doesn't seem too bad, does it?

After all, that's a Top 3 finish in a non-designated event in the regular season.

There's a reason that this is the finale of the PGA Tour's FedEx Cup Playoffs, though. These players have earned their way into the field and the massive amount of prize money that comes their way for doing so.

The TOUR Championship will once again feature a staggered start beginning in Round 1 at East Lake Golf Club. Scottie Scheffler will once again begin the week top of the leaderboard looking to win the FedExCup and the bonus of $18 million.

The FedExCup points leader after the first two Playoffs events will begin the TOUR Championship at 10-under par. The No. 2 player will start at 8-under. The No. 3 player starts at 7-under; the No. 4 player starts at 6-under; the No. 5 player starts at 5-under. Players 6-10 start at 4-under; players 11-15 start at 3-under; players 16-20 start at 2-under; players 21-25 start at 1-under; and players 26-30 start at even par.

‘FedExCup Starting Strokes’ and one swing from every player at TOUR Championship

At the TOUR Championship, the player with the lowest stroke total over 72 holes when combined with his FedExCup Starting Strokes will be crowned the FedExCup champion, be credited with an official victory at the TOUR Championship, earn a bonus of $18 million and a five-year PGA TOUR exemption.

Here's how the final 30 players in the FedExCup standings who qualified through the BMW Championship will begin the TOUR Championship.

The PGA Tour completed its Florida Swing and Peter Malnati walked away the winner of the last event in the Sunshine State. The University of Missouri grad shot a final-round 67 Sunday at the Valspar Championship to top Cameron Young by two shots at Innisbrook Resort's Copperhead Course.

It's Malnati's second PGA Tour victory, this one coming nine years after the first. It's also been 3,059 days. This one, however, sends him to the Masters this year, as well as the other three major championships. He's only ever played in three majors total.

Malnati also collected $1.512 million for his victory, from an $8.4 million total purse. It's Young's ninth runner-up finish on the PGA Tour as he continues to search for his first win. He took home $915,600.

Austin Eckroat won the Cognizant Classic at the Palm Beaches three weeks ago to start the Florida Swing before World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler dominated the next two weeks at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and the Players Championship.

Here is the prize money breakdown for each golfer who made the cut this week outside Tampa, Fla.

2020 Tour Championship prize money, FedEx Cup payout: How the $45 million purse will be split at East Lake

There's an astonishing $45 million on the line this week at east lake.

what is tour championship payout

The Tour Championship feels separate from the rest of the FedEx Cup Playoffs, and in some ways, it stands out that way. The amount of money at stake -- $45 million split between 30 golfers -- dwarfs every other prize pool in golf, and while winning that trophy is prestigious, capturing the $15 million that comes with it can be life-changing for several golfers in this field.

Last year, in the first iteration of these playoffs, Rory McIlroy took home the first $15 million first prize (it was previously $10 million). This year, Dustin Johnson went wire-to-wire at the Tour Championship to cash the huge first-place prize.

That's not to say getting second is a bad thing. The runner-up netted $5 million, while third place got $4 million and so on down the list.

Even those who struggled at East Lake took home six-figure bonuses. Let's take a look at all 30 payouts from the 2020 Tour Championship on Monday. Golfers that tie split the value of the combined spots in the field.

1st -- $15 million -- Dustin Johnson 2nd -- $5 million -- Justin Thomas, Xander Schauffele (tie at $4.5 million) 3rd -- $4 million 4th -- $3 million -- Jon Rahm 5th -- $2.5 million -- Scottie Scheffler 6th -- $1.9 million -- Collin Morikawa 7th -- $1.3 million -- Tyrrell Hatton 8th -- $1.1 million -- Rory McIlroy, Patrick Reed, Sebastian Munoz (tie at $960,000) 9th -- $950,000 10th -- $830,000 11th -- $750,000 -- Sungjae Im 12th -- $705,000 -- Harris English, Webb Simpson (tie at $682,500) 13th -- $660,000 14th -- $620,000 -- Mackenzie Hughes 15th -- $595,000 -- Hideki Matsuyama, Daniel Berger (tie at $582,500) 16th -- $570,000 17th -- $550,000 -- Tony Finau 18th -- $535,000 -- Abraham Ancer, Lanto Griffin (tie at $527,500) 19th -- $520,000 20th -- $505,000 -- Viktor Hovland, Brendon Todd (tie at $497,500) 21st -- $490,000 22nd -- $478,000 -- Bryson DeChambeau 23rd -- $466,000 -- Kevin Kisner 24th -- $456,000 -- Cameron Smith, Ryan Palmer, Cameron Champ (tie at $445,333) 25th -- $445,000 26th -- $435,000 27th -- $425,000 -- Kevin Na, Joaquin Niemann (tie at $420,000) 28th -- $415,000 29th -- $405,000 -- marc Leishman 30th -- $395,000 -- Billy Horschel
