Fishing The Dry Tortuga’s Aboard Sea Trek Fishing – Mid Summer Report

We’re deep into the dog days of summer here in Southwest Florida. That means flat calm seas hundreds of miles out into the gulf (minus the summer squalls). I recently had an opportunity to serve as a relief Captain aboard the Fort Myers Beach head boat, Sea Trek. They often head one hundred miles plus towards the south to fish the bountiful waters near Fort Jefferson and the Dry Tortugas.

It was only a day after the June full moon, which usually spells for tough fishing conditions during the day. As we steamed south close to 120 miles, the crew was able to hook up on multiple large Bonita on the troll as we headed south. Besides a few thick patches of flying fish near the surface, the trolling bite was pretty slow.

We arrived at the fishing grounds around 7 pm and were excited to get our baits into the water. Unfortunately, the bite was very slow and we made several moves through the night, working a variety of live bottom and wrecks, but never really found a hot bite as the full moon rose above the horizon and made it’s way across the sky. The entire crew of 17 fished hard through the night, but alas, the bite was slow.

Seatrek Fishing Charter

Seatrek offers a number of different fishing charters aboard their 65-foot boat which sails from San Carlos Island next to Bonita Bill’s restaurant . The boat has 50 designated fishing spots, an air conditioned inside cabin, 2 restrooms, and a galley for overnight trips.

They run 1/2 day fishing trips which depart at 9:30 am and return at 4:00 pm. 1/2 day means you get about 4 hours fishing and the remainder of the time is transit to and from the fishing reefs. Also available are private whole-boat charters, night shark fishing, and their weekend overnight trips to the Dry Tortugas.

Prices are $45 for night shark fishing, $60 for the 1/2 day fishing trip, and $400 for the overnight weekend Dry Tortugas trip.

Fully Equipped Sea Trek Boat Charters

The Sea Trek is a beautiful 65-foot boat which has first class amenities for a comfortable day or half day fishing trip. As well as an upper and lower deck and two restrooms, there is an air conditioned cabin with flat screen TVs and a HD sports package so you won’t miss a minute of your second-favorite sport, after fishing of course! There’s even a fully fitted galley which comes in handy for those weekend overnight charters to the Dry Tortugas.

The latest addition to their fleet is a 2014 22-foot center console tidewater Carolina bay boat which is available for private charters of up to 4 guests.

Both boats are equipped with the latest technology for navigation and fishing and include a USCG licensed captain and experienced crew onboard to ensure a safe and comfortable trip. The staff is always happy to offer tips and practical help, especially if children want to try their hand at fishing.

They will also clean your catch during the return journey ready for you to cook your “catch of the day” at home or have one of the local dockside restaurants cook your prepared fish for you.

Sea Trek Fishing Trips and Private Boat Charters

If you are relatively inexperienced, why not ‘test the waters” with a shorter fishing charter. Half day fishing trips include around four hours fishing time plus transiting to and from the reefs. The trips generally depart around 9.30am and return late afternoon for a great value fishing trip. Alternatively, you can book a full day’s deep water fishing around Sanibel and Captiva, or join one of the night shark fishing trips for a truly exciting fishing experience. Altogether the Sea Trek crew have 50 favorite fishing spots, giving everyone the chance to reel in the best possible catch.

Sea Trek also offers private boat charters for your own exclusive fishing party with family and friends. These can be tailor-made to suit your wishes, depending upon the age and experience of your group. Rest assured, no-one is too young or too old to enjoy the trip, so all the family can spend quality time together.

Prices start from around $45 for a night shark fishing trip, $60 for a ½ day fishing and $400 for the chance of a lifetime to join a weekend fishing trip to the Dry Tortugas. Custom tackle, live bait and licenses are available and tour prices include complimentary parking and free ice.
