Critics report that the base engine in the 2016 Dodge Journey is noisy and weak. Most prefer the available V6 engine, though some argue that it also fails to impress. Many test drivers say the Journey’s handling is controlled, with good maneuverability, but some think it feels unbalanced around corners. The Journey offers below-average fuel economy for the class.

Acceleration and Power

The 2016 Dodge Journey comes standard with a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that puts out 173 horsepower and it's mated to a four-speed automatic transmission. A 283-horsepower 3.6-liter V6 engine mated to a six-speed automatic transmission is available. The Journey earns an EPA-estimated 19/26 mpg city/highway, which is among the worst ratings in the class.

The Journey’s base engine provides insufficient power and makes too much noise, according to test drivers. They note that the optional V6 engine provides more power, but they still consider it unremarkable. Both engines underwhelm reviewers when trying to pass at highway speeds, and the fuel economy also disappoints, due in part to the outdated four-speed transmission.

Front-wheel drive is standard on the 2016 Journey, and all-wheel drive is available. Most test drivers agree that the Journey provides decent handling, although some feel that it can be unstable when cornering. They add that it provides a smooth, composed ride, even over bumpy roads. Some critics note that rival midsize SUVs offer more engaging performance.

But you get what you pay for as the Journey's reliability is notoriously bad and its ride quality is simply worse than competitors like the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4.

What Features in the 2016 Dodge Journey Are Most Important?

The Journey is powered by a 173-horsepower, 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that is paired with a four-speed automatic transmission. A 283-hp, 3.6-liter V-6 with a six-speed automatic is standard on the all-wheel drive versions and the R/T trim level. It comes standard with a touchscreen CD stereo with USB port, cruise control, power heated side mirrors, air conditioning and keyless entry. In keeping with requirements for every new car, the 2016 Dodge Journey has front airbags, antilock brakes and an electronic stability system.

The V-6 and six-speed automatic are optional on all trim levels with front-wheel drive except the SE. A backup camera is available on the 2016 Dodge Journey for safety when in Reverse. The Journey also has an available 8.4-inch touchscreen multimedia system, a navigation system and a backseat entertainment system. Drivers can opt for heated front seats and leather upholstery for extra luxury, and the Journey also has available remote start and power moonroof features.

I purchased a 2016 Dodge Journey October of 2022 with 70k on it. I had a Kia Sorento previously that got up to 360k and was starting to go down and with 4 little ones, we needed a new car. It was great for a few months and now everything is going down at once. I was driving home with one of my kids and suddenly my steering wheel locked, it went into power-save mode and started overheating. A nice man who happened to be a mechanic stopped to take a look as we were in the middle of the road, told me that my serpentine belt broke and found that my car had been leaking oil on the inside which was getting on the belt. Replaced the belt and took it to my mechanic and was told that I needed another coolant housing unit which cost me $900. Then it was fine, but started leaking again 2 weeks later and the battery light started to come on sporadically. Went back to my mechanic. Now they find that I need a new VVT Solenoid and an engine oil gasket cover which is going to cost another $1200, but battery and alternator checked out. I got the car towed home as I was afraid to drive and now it's only operating in battery-save mode which is weird as the battery and alternator have been tested multiple times. It's just been sitting in our driveway as I don't know what to do with it. Now we're back looking for another car. P.S. Whoever designed the placement of the battery does not need to have their position anymore.

My experience was horrible 😩😞

I’ve had so many issues with this vehicle, transmission, engine , shocks, control arms , leaks , axles. Lord have mercy never again. I have Camry and Honda in mind smh .

Don't buy a 2016 Dodge Journey!

Bought my 2016 Dodge Journey back in April 2022 with 84,000 miles on it. Thought it was a great vehicle, comfortable, roomy, good performance with the V-6. within 3 months the electrical outlets under the dash as well as by the back tailgate quit working. Then the passenger side back door lock quit working. then 2 weeks ago while out on an animal rescue call, I parked it, shut it off & 30 minutes later it would not start. Managed to jump start it after having jumper cables on it for 30 minutes. Got it home, which wasn't too far away, shut it off & that was the end of driving my Journey. It had 87,000 miles on it at that point. Had it towed to my mechanics shop where they went thru every thing, the battery was fine, less than a year old. Was told the starter was bad as well as it had a cracked motor mount. Had all of that work done as well as an oil change while it was there. After being in the shop for almost a week I picked it up at a cost of $1000. Did some driving around the following day than it sat in my driveway for 2 days. The next day it started up fine, went out to vote, it started up fine again, then ran to Walmart to stock up on animal supplies before the Tropical Storm Nicole. Loaded up the Journey with supplies, went to start it & nothing. Every warning light was flashing on & off as well as a message saying the vehicle was not in park. AAA came out, could not start it so off it went on a tow truck back to the shop where it's now been for over a week. Diagnostics are showing every error code known to Dodge vehicles. The entire fuse box has been replaced, the battery & starter gone thru again, the wiring gone thru & no matter what they try the Journey will not start, no turnover, nothing. If they can't figure it out by this Monday I will have it towed to my local Dodge dealer & see if they can figure it out. By the way this shop specializes in custom trucks & SUVs, have an amazing reputation & are well known for the work they do yet they can't figure out why it will not start, turnover or even click. This is the first Dodge I've ever owned & will be the last one. Should've bought a Ford Explorer like I was going to do. Luckily I didn't sell my 1997 4 cylinder Ford Escort with over 250,000 miles on it when I bought the Journey. I'm back driving that now.

Dodge Hornet R/T with PowerShot: It’s all about that torque

T he transformation from cars with internal combustion engines (ICEs) to full battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) has different looks, depending on your perspective. The Stellantis Dodge division recently shared its perspective on electrification with a video that showcases its favorite feature from the 2024 Dodge Hornet R/T with Powershot, the brand’s first plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV). The Inner Child Intervention video clarifies that, from Dodge’s perspective, it’s all about that torque.

Why the Dodge Hornet  R/T with PowerShot matters

The Dodge Hornet, available in AWD GT and R/T variants, is the brand’s first electrified vehicle. Dodge puts a stake in the ground for the butt-clenching performance potential of electric power, quelling any expectations of milder Dodge BEVs in the future.

To understand the perspective of the Dodge division, consider that this group launched the glorious Dodge Viper and unleashed the fearsome Dodge Durango SRT Hellcat . Dodge closed the books on ICEs with the 1,025-hp 2023 Challenger SRT Demon 170 . Later this year, the Dodge Charger Daytona R/T  will undoubtedly prove the point.

2024 Dodge Hornet R/T: It’s not just the PowerShot

The Hornet R/T’s 1.3-liter inline 4-cylinder engine is no slouch even without the PowerShot boost, cranking out 258 horsepower with premium unleaded fuel. Alternatively, you can run on electric power with a range of up to 32 miles. The EPA estimates the Hornet R/T has a total driving range of up to 360 miles with a full tank and fully charged battery.

As the inner child video suggests, however, Dodge fully expects Hornet R/T owners to generously use the PowerShot feature, which boosts the combined output to 288 horsepower and a maximum of 383 lb-ft of torque for up to 15 seconds at a time. The R/T launches from zero to 60 mph in 5.6 seconds and has a maximum speed of 128 mph.

The R/T has three driving modes. E-Save mode uses the gas engine only. Electric Mode uses the battery exclusively. With Hybrid mode, you can combine the two power systems to blend efficiency and full-out power.

The Hornet R/T has standard dynamic torque vectoring with its standard all-wheel drive and can be enhanced further for performance with advanced braking and dual-stage suspension options.

2024 Dodge Hornet R/T: Tech to go

The 2024 Dodge Hornet GT and R/T models include standard UConnect 5 with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Amazon Alexa, and, with the optional Dodge Connect service, Hybrid Electric Pages that allow you to modify drive modes, control the car’s charging schedule, and monitor power use.

Blind spot detection, forward collision warning with mitigation, and rear parking sensors are standard. Available options include active driving assist, traffic sign recognition, front parking sensors, drowsy driver detection, 360-degree surround view camera, and more.
