Do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

What is Machu Picchu?

Machu Picchu is a magnificent reminder of the power and ingenuity of the Inca civilization.

The ancient citadel, built in the 15th century, was abandoned only 100 years later, and many mysteries remain.

Listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage site in 1983 and announced as one of the Seven Wonders of the World in 2007, Machu Picchu makes a lasting impression.

Where is Machu Picchu?

Overlooking the Urubamba River, the site of Machu Picchu sits above the Sacred Valley – located in the Cusco region of Peru.

How can I get to Machu Picchu?

Many travellers fly into the capital of Cusco before taking the train or choosing a hiking tour. The stepping stone to Machu Picchu is Ollantaytambo, about 1.5 hours away from Cusco by bus.

From Ollantaytambo, the most common ways to get to Machu Picchu are:

• Hiking the Inca Trail (one way to Machu Picchu)
• Taking the equally scenic and rewarding Quarry Trail
• Trekking the challenging 8-day Choquequirao Trail

Can I still hike if I take the train?

So, you want to experience the Inca Trail but aren't quite up for the entire hike?

The one-day option takes you by train part of the way where you hop off and trek the trade highway of the ancient Inca empire.

You will arrive at the Sun Gate in the afternoon to take in the views of Machu Picchu.

Is hiking the only way to get to Machu Picchu?

On all of our trips that visit Machu Picchu, you can choose the rail journey instead of the hike – simply specify while booking that you’d prefer the train option. There's no extra cost for this, though please note fees may apply if you decide to change to the train option after your Inca Trail permit has already been purchased.

When is the best time to visit Machu Picchu?

You can visit Machu Picchu all year round.  The most popular time, and therefore the most crowded, is in June and July. 

Low cloud cover during the dry season from April to October also means cold nights on hiking trails, so you'll need thermals for a good night’s sleep. 

The wet season is from November to March. Temperatures rise and the region receives heavy rainfall, so waterproofs are essential if you're hiking. If you don't mind a bit of rain, the plus side is that crowds are smaller. If you want to hike the Inca Trail, note that it closes every year in February for maintenance.

Can you get to Machu Picchu in a day?

Yes, you can. Starting with an early rise in the morning, take a 1.5-hour bus ride to Ollantaytambo, then a 2.5-hour train to Aguas Calientes, followed by a 30-minute bus to Machu Picchu.

You will have a couple of hours to visit Machu Picchu and then return to Cusco the same way.

None of our trips visit Machu Picchu this way, as we believe it doesn’t allow enough time to explore (and really enjoy) the site and the Sacred Valley area.

How high is Machu Picchu?

Machu Picchu is found deep in the cloud forest at 2440 m (7972 ft) above sea level, sitting at 1000 m (3280 ft) lower than Cusco.

What does this mean for you? In terms of altitude, you're unlikely to experience any altitude issues at Machu Picchu itself.

But be aware, trekking to Machu Picchu involves walking up and down several steep stairs, ramps and terraces at various altitudes, which can be strenuous.

Will the altitude affect me?

Most people start to feel the effects of altitude at over 2000 m (6561 ft) regardless of age, gender or fitness level. While our leaders have basic first aid training and are aware of the closest medical facilities, it is very important that you make yourself aware of the causes and effects of traveling at altitude. Monitor your health and seek assistance accordingly.

It is essential to take it easy, drink plenty of water and speak to your group leader immediately if you feel unwell.

We recommend seeing your doctor if you have health concerns before the trip, especially if you have a pre-existing medical condition or are taking any medication.

Do I need a permit to hike to Machu Picchu?

Everyone hiking to Machu Picchu via the iconic Inca Trail or the shorter Inca Trail Express requires a permit. You don't need a permit to trek via the Quarry or Choquequirao trails.

If you do the Inca Trail with Intrepid, our adventure consultants secure your permit for you so you can focus on getting excited – just make sure you have your passport details handy at the time of booking.

Permits are available on a first-come, first-served basis, so booking well in advance is critical.

We endeavor to purchase your permit within two working days of receiving all necessary information.

What should I pack for Machu Picchu?

For a day trip exploring Machu Picchu, we recommended taking a small backpack with the essentials: sunscreen, hat, water bottle (filled before departing), a few snacks and mosquito repellent. It helps to wear breathable pants, a long shirt and a waterproof jacket – since the UV index is higher in the Andes and the site is prone to rainfall.

What is Wayna Picchu?

Wayna Picchu (also known also as Huayna Pichu or Wayna Pikchu) means ‘young peak’ in Quechua – although the mountain appears anything but young, towering behind Machu Picchu.

Known as the ‘stairs of death’, the hair-raising climb takes about three hours to return. More recently, a cap of 400 people a day has been introduced on the number of visitors allowed to climb.

Can I climb Wayna Picchu with Intrepid Travel?

We have performed risk assessments on all our optional activities, and unfortunately, we don't consider climbing Wayna Picchu a safe activity at this stage.

Reaching Wayna Picchu involves climbing steep, narrow and exposed sets of stairs, and we just can't guarantee your safety.

Our leaders are specifically prohibited from assisting you in visiting Wayna Picchu.

What are the toilet facilities like at Machu Picchu?

There are public toilets located at the main entrance of Machu Picchu and none after entering the site – so make sure you time your stop before heading off to explore.

Take some coins with you as there is a small fee to use the toilet facilities.

What does the Rainforest Alliance tick of approval mean?

The Rainforest Alliance is a non-profit organization. It is working to build strong forests, healthy agricultural landscapes and thriving communities.

The green frog seal shows that an enterprise has been audited to meet environmental, social, and economic sustainability standards.

Can I visit Machu Picchu if I have a disability?

Yes, but of course it will depend on your level of disability, fitness and what support will be available to you.

People who are visually impaired have completed the Inca Trail (with the right support crew, of course).

What language is spoken in peru.

The official language of Peru is Spanish with 82.6% of the population speaking Spanish, one of many dialects of Spanish. In Peru, there are 47 indigenous languages with Quechua (13.9% of the pop.) and Aymara (1.7% of the pop.) being the two most common.

Is English spoken in Peru? 

English is spoken in most tourist areas, but it is not widely spoken throughout Peru. 

What currency is used in Peru?

Peru’s currency is the Nuevo Sol. The coins are five, ten, twenty and fifty cents. Coins of 1, 2 and 5 sol and bills of 10, 20, 50, 100 and 200 sol are also available.

Do I need a visa to travel to Peru? 

A visa is not required when travelling as a tourist from Canada or the United States for up to 90 days. 

When is the best time to travel to Peru?

May through September is the best time to travel to Peru. Although this is their winter, this is also considered their dry season with more sunny days and cold nights. 

Is there transportation within Peru?

Transport in Peru’s main cities mainly consists of local buses and taxis. In Lima, they have a subway system called the Lima Metro. To travel between different regions, it is always best to fly. In the Andean region, from Cusco to Lake Titicaca, there are also train journeys that allow you to enjoy the beautiful scenery while you travel comfortably. It is important to mention that the only way to access Aguas Calientes is by train. This is the closest town you reach before visiting the famous Incan citadel of Machu Picchu. 

Is Peru a family-friendly destination?

Peru is an excellent destination to visit with the family as the facilities, culture, and activities are perfect for a family trip. In Peru, both adults and kids can learn about different cultures, history, and archaeology, admire magnificent scenery, try local food, visit llama or alpaca farms and local markets, go on explorations to the Amazon, swim in the Amazon rivers, or sandboard in the desert. Do I Need A Visa To Travel To Machu Picchu?

Visitors from most countries, including the US, Canada, European countries and Australia do not need a visa to enter Peru where Machu Picchu is located. A valid passport (at least 6 months after your trip) is sufficient and you will be permitted to stay in the country for up to 90 days.

Do I Need To Get Any Vaccinations Or Malaria Tablets Ahead Of Travel?

We recommend visiting your clinician at least six weeks before you travel to receive the latest advice. Peru recommends (but does not require proof of) vaccinations for Hepatitis A, Typhoid and Yellow Fever. Yellow fever and antimalarials are are not necessary for trips to Lima, Cusco, the Sacred Valley, Lake Titicaca or Machu Picchu (including the Inca Trail).

Andean cuisine is heavily based around the abundant potato varieties, corn, quinoa, trout, alpaca and even guinea pig of the Andes. Popular regional dishes to try are the Pachamanca , a traditional meat and vegetable medley cooked in an earthen stove, and the cuy chactado , deep-fried guinea pig.

Besides, a 4-day hike may not fit in with your timescales or the idea of a relaxing vacation for many.

The most common way to reach Macchu Picchu is by train , with several departure stations and train services to choose from.  The most popular trains depart from Ollantaytambo, the finishing point for popular Sacred Valley tours , located a couple hours’ drive northwest of Cusco. You can also take the train from Poroy, located about 25 minutes outside of Cusco.

How Far Is Machu Picchu From The Amazon?

Many travelers want to visit both destinations whilst in Peru, and wonder if Machu Picchu is in the Amazon jungle, or how far it is from the Amazon. Machu Picchu sits in the Cordillera de Vilcabamba mountain range where the Peruvian Andes meet the Amazon, which lies 160 km (100 miles) to the East.

Day 1: Arrival in Cusco & City Tour

• We will meet you upon arrival at the Cusco airport, and will take you to your comfortable Cusco hotel. Spend the morning at your leisure. This is a good time to explore some of Cusco’s less-visited attractions including the famous San Pedro Market, the bohemian neighborhood of San Blas, or one of Cusco’s many fine museums.
• In the afternoon, an expert guide will take you to some of the world’s the sacred Temple of the Sun or Qoricancha, and the spectacular Sacsayhuaman fortress. In the late afternoon, you’ll return to your Cusco hotel. Spend the evening at your leisure enjoying the local cuisine, music, and the splendor of Cusco at night.

Day 2: Sacred Valley Tour

• Explore the beautiful Peruvian countryside with a full-day tour of the magical Sacred Valley, home to several royal estates of Incan emperors. First, you will visit the town of Pisac, famous for its bustling indigenous market and for the beautiful Incan ruins on the hillside overlooking the city. Following your visit to Pisac, you will stop for lunch (not included) at a buffet restaurant offering a variety of Peruvian and international food near the town of Urubamba, named after the sacred river that flows through the region.
• Next, you will visit the spectacular fortress of Ollantaytambo. These magnificent Incan ruins that were part of the royal estate of the Incan emperor Pachacuti. Later, you will be taken to your comfortable hotel in the Sacred Valley. If you’ve selected a hotel in Ollantaytambo, you can continue exploring the traditional Incan town at your leisure.

Day 3: Machu Picchu Tour

• After breakfast at your Sacred Valley hotel, you will take a train to Machu Picchu, the hidden Inca citadel. This hour-and-a-half to two-hour train journey is one of the most scenic in the world, winding through mountain, river valleys, high jungle and mystical cloud forests. Upon arrival in Aguas Calientes, the town at the base of Machu Picchu, you will be met at the train station and accompanied to the bus station for a 20-minute ride up to the citadel.
• Next, you will meet your expert, English-speaking guide for a tour of the most important sites in Machu Picchu, including the Intihuatana (Sun Stone), the Sun Temple, and the Room of 3 Windows. Plus you’ll be able to marvel at lush mountains that mystically conceal the ruins. In the late afternoon, you will take a comfortable train back to Cusco and then be transferred to your Cusco hotel for the evening.
• *Optional: If you would like to spend more time at Machu Picchu, this package can be customized to include an overnight stay in Aguas Calientes, which will allow you to make a second visit to the enigmatic citadel. On this second day, a Huayna Picchu and/or Machu Picchu Mountain hike can be added to your itinerary, to get a bird’s eye view of the ruins.

Day 4: Departure from Cusco

• After breakfast at your hotel, one of our representatives will meet you at your hotel and take you to the airport for your journey home or on to your next destination.

Machu Picchu is one of the world’s most recognised and admired archaeological sites, and every tourist to Peru wants to visit and appreciate the important role it played in the mighty Inca civilisation that was centred on this prominent mountainous location.

American archaeologist Hiram Bingham “discovered” Machu Picchu in 1911, and the luxury train that now carries well-heeled tourists from Cusco (or Cuzco) to the Unesco World Heritage Site of Machu Picchu is named after him.

Visitors to this part of the world mostly fly into Cusco before heading off to Machu Picchu, with some time usually spent in the Sacred Valley, where other historic sites, such as Ollantaytambo, close to the banks of the Urubamba River, will also appeal to budding Indiana Jones types.

Apu is the name the Incas gave to the mountain spirits of their culture, and it was these protective forces that were responsible for the agricultural success as well as the well-being of the people who lived in Machu Picchu.

Known as the Historic Sanctuary Of Machu Picchu, this site is an amazing engineering feat, with buildings erected from massive stone blocks that were transported some distance to the site perched high up in the Andes Mountains.

Machu Picchu, extending over 32,592ha, is recognised for its outstanding cultural and natural assets, including mountain peaks, foothills, and valleys that surround the spectacular archaeological monument known as La Ciudadela (the Citadel).

This mountainous settlement, built in the 15th century, was abandoned when the Spaniards conquered it in the 16th century, and it only came to the attention of the outside world in 1911.

Some 200 stone structures are located on a site that had religious, ceremonial, astronomical, and agricultural value to the Inca people.

One of the things I found fascinating about this amazing site was that archaeologists remain uncertain about many aspects of Inca life, but most recognise the intricate relationship these people had with their natural surroundings. The various theories suggest Machu Picchu was a fortress, an astrological site, a reflective retreat, or perhaps a religious site, but whatever it was, the inhabitants made very conscious decisions to literally move mountains by erecting the grand stone structures that they did high up in the Andes.

Visitors are constantly reminded that these massive blocks of heavy stone were relocated and then arranged without mortar and with such accuracy to ensure that they have remained unmoved for centuries.

My guide was a font of knowledge, and while it’s an undulating site, the main part of Machu Picchu is relatively easy to negotiate, especially if you regularly stop to simply take in the magnitude of the setting and to immortalise it in photographs.

Journey and destination

Visitors can travel from Cusco to Machu Picchu by various modes of transportation, with the most comfortable being in exclusive and luxurious train carriages while enjoying the elegance of the dining car, the bar car, and an observatory. It is on these trains that passengers can admire the scenery in the open air while sipping traditional Peruvian cocktails and listening to live local music.

The Belmond Hiram Bingham train to Machu Picchu, with carriages modelled on Pullman cars of the 1920s, operates every day except the last Sunday of each month, with a morning departure from Poroy Station (near Cusco) to Machu Picchu Station and a late afternoon departure for the return journey.

Passengers on the Machu Picchu sector enjoy a gourmet lunch on the journey via Ollantaytambo to their heritage site destination, while a fine dining experience is a highlight of the early evening return trip.

I travelled both ways in one day and enjoyed an excellent selection of beverages that included local Peruvian wines, beers, and the national cocktail, Pisco Sour, that complemented both meals.

At other times, I relaxed in the bar car and listened to the beat of the Peruvian cajón and tambourines, with traditional Andean and international music creating a lively ambiance.

All-inclusive fares include coach transfers to and from Cusco to Poroy Station, the train to Machu Picchu Station, a bus to Machu Picchu, entry to the site with leadership from a tour guide (in English or Spanish), and a refreshing post-tour cocktail in the mountains at Belmond Sanctuary Lodge.

Passengers who want to spend more time at Machu Picchu can stay overnight near the heritage site, and for rail guests who have travelled there in the luxurious surrounds of the train, this generally means staying at the impressive Belmond Sanctuary Lodge, located close to the heritage precinct.

Heritage sideshow

Most visitors to Machu Picchu also spend time in Cusco and the Sacred Valley, with the Inca ruins of Ollantaytambo being the main attraction in the Urubamba River Valley, although there are several other tourist sites to visit.

Cusco Airport is the gateway to the area, and it wasn’t long before I slowly started to explore the city’s narrow alleyways, grand plazas, and impressive public buildings that are protected within the City of Cusco, considered a Unesco World Heritage Centre.

Even at the simplest of inclines, I was puffing, but I used my rest time profitably to take photos while catching my breath as my guide outlined the city’s historic detail.

At 3,400m above sea level, altitude sickness (known locally as soroche) is something some visitors to Cusco need to consider, but don’t be misled into thinking Cusco is the best place to acclimatise before travelling to Machu Picchu, as the latter is actually lower at 2,430m above sea level.

Visitors need to take things slow, drink coca tea and rest, with the only real solution being to travel to a lower altitude. To avoid such an illness, some tourists start their journey in the Sacred Valley and then visit Machu Picchu before ending up in Cusco.

Cusco was home to the Incas before the Spanish took charge, and there is evidence of both cultures with the Qurikancha housing fine Inca foundations as well as the Convent of Santo Domingo.

Plaza de Armas is typical of several open plazas in the city centre, with the ornate La Catedral and Temple de la Compania de Jesus lining its grassy verges.

Beyond the plazas, the ancient, narrow, winding alleyways of Barrio de San Blas extend into the suburbs, and it is here that small shops selling arts and crafts interspersed with bars and cafés create a lively ambiance.

Adventurous travellers will want to stay in Machu Picchu to spend several days in the region exploring the archaeological site, Cusco, and the Sacred Valley, whereas armchair explorers will be content with just one day at the fascinating Machu Picchu heritage area.

Travel notes

Getting there: There are no direct flights from Malaysia to Peru, so travellers have to make a transit (or two) along the way, with the connection offered by KLM Royal Dutch Airlines being quite seamless.

KLM has daily flights via Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport, but the journey takes 30 hours unless you make a stopover in the Netherlands.

There are domestic flights from Lima to Cusco, and Machu Picchu is several hours from Cusco. Adventurous visitors can make the multi-day, 42km, high-altitude walk on the Inca Trail or ride the famous Hiram Bingham Train to Machu Picchu to admire this dramatic archaeological site perched high up in the Andes.

The bus journey from Plaza de Armas in Cusco to Poroy Station takes 20 minutes. Ollantaytambo Station is 90 minutes away, while Machu Picchu Pueblo Station (also known as Aguas Calientes) is another 90 minutes away. From here, passengers join a Consettur bus to the entrance of the World Heritage Site.

Where to stay: Belmond Palacio Nazarenas, Belmond Monasterio Cusco, Belmond Hotel Rio Sagrado, and Sanctuary Lodge Machu Picchu. Visitors to Peru are exempt from the country’s 18% sales tax on charges for their room and food upon presenting their passport at check-in.

Visas: Malaysians do not require a visa to enter Peru.

Little is known about the natives who inhabited the area that is now Colombia before the Spanish arrived in 1500.

Shortly after arriving, the Spanish established the colony of New Granada and built the settlement of Santa Fe de Bogota, which subsequently becomes known as Bogota. These new colonies thrived and many African slaves were taken to these cities to assist with building and maintenance. After a 14-year struggle, Simí³n Bolí­var’s Venezuelan troops defeated the Spanish at the battle of Boyacá in Colombia in 1819. The resulting Republic of Gran Colombia united Colombia, Venezuela, Panama, and Ecuador as a single country under one central leader. Due to regional differences, Gran Colombia dissolved in 1829-1830 when Bolí­var lost Venezuela and Ecuador to separatists.

In the 19th century, Colombia was a troubled country and suffered eight civil wars between its liberal and conservative parties as conservatives believed in a strong central government and a powerful church while liberals believed in a decentralized government, strong regional power, and a limited role of the church. Political instability continued through the late 19th century and culminated in the War of a Thousand Days which began in 1899 and resulted in the death of nearly 120,000 people.

In the early 20th century, social legislation was introduced and Colombia was generally peaceful and without conflict – trade unions were encouraged, the economy developed and the export of coffee increased. This period of rest was short-lived however and the assassination of the well-liked and respected left-wing mayor of Bogota in 1948 caused riots and began a civil war that lasted until 1957.

At the beginning of the 21st century, the situation in Colombia improved. In 2000, the United States pledged $1.3 billion to fight drug trafficking with “Plan Colombia”. Violence in Colombia declined after 2002 when President Alvaro Uribe increased Colombia’s security, aggressively campaigned against the drug trade, and passed several economic reform bills.

In 2012, the United States-Colombia Trade Promotion Agreement (CTPA) went into effect. This agreement eliminated tariffs and other trade barriers to the exchange of goods and services between Colombia and the United States. In the early 21st century, the Colombian economy grew rapidly and poverty and unemployment declined. Today, Colombia is booming, tourism is increasing and the country has a bright future.

The history of Peru (before the Inca era) as we know it today has been uncovered, in large part, through large archaeological excavation endeavors. Historical artifacts including ceramics, textiles, and cave drawings have been collected, sorted, and displayed throughout Peru’s archaeological museums – a collection of clues as to the lives of Peruvian inhabitants who lived and worked nearly 20,000 years ago. Advanced hunting tools and well-planned irrigation systems lead many to believe that these early colonies were cutting-edge, organized, and well-established.

The Incan empire ruled from around 1400 A.C. to 1500 and is widely considered one of the largest dynasties in American history before the arrival of Christopher Columbus in 1492. This small tribe of peoples was based out of Cusco, which served as the country’s capital city throughout Inca rule. Machu Picchu is one of the most well-preserved ruins left behind by the Incan peoples, and thousands of tourists flock to visit the historical site’s peak each year. The Incas grew to be one of the largest and most powerful forces in South America and had a complex and interesting society that is well studied to this day.

Spanish soldiers arrived in the South American land in 1532 and began plotting to take over the rule of the fertile and bountiful country. These European soldiers brought smallpox and other illnesses into Peru, killing thousands of “New World” inhabitants including Huayna Capac who served as the 11th Inca or King. Capac’s sons were each given half of his kingdom and a civil war that began between the brothers helped to quicken the downfall of the Incan empire. Spanish rulers changed the capital of Peru from the land-locked Cuzco to coastal Lima to accommodate arriving soldiers and facilitate trade.

Peru’s Independence Wars were fought from 1810 until 1824 when a battle led by General Antonio Jose de Sucre secured freedom from Spanish rule. Peru continued to fight for freedom throughout the 1800s and 1900s – defeating Spanish rulers in 1866 and losing a large piece of land to Chile in a war that spanned from 1879 to 1883. A war with Ecuador in 1941 over borders wasn’t resolved until 1998 when Peru agreed to allow Ecuador access to the Amazon rainforest in exchange for keeping control over the land.

In 2001 Peru elected its first Native Indian President, Alejandro Toledo. Peru is one of the most diverse countries in Latin America – with warm coastal deserts, cool rainforests and even snowy mountain regions. The weight limit for checked luggage on most internal flights, including Cusco and the Amazon is currently 20 kilos (44 pounds) per person. If you are over that limit, you’ll likely need to pay a surcharge.

Large suitcases are not permitted on the train from Ollantaytambo to Machu Picchu, although these cases can be stored securely at the lodge during excursions. A small weekend bag is recommended as you’ll need a change of clothes and essential items when travelling to Machu Picchu overnight.

COASTAL REGION

Temperatures are generally warm throughout the year and the coastal region usually experiences little rainfall. High daytime temperatures (80+ F) and lower nighttime temperatures (50+ F) make for a relaxing vacation. The city of Lima can get quite foggy from April through October but the sun breaks through clouds the further out from Lima you travel. The capital city is warm and humid from November through March.

ANDES / MACHU PICCHU

Expect high temperatures and dry climates from April through October – although temperatures vary by altitude so light layers are encouraged for those planning to visit the peaks of Machu Picchu. Sudden, heavy showers occur from November through March so raincoats are a must.

AMAZON RAINFOREST

History of Ecuador

Ecuador’s written history as we know it today begins with the concentration of early cultures of indigenous peoples throughout coastal areas that supported the majority of inhabitants from as far back as the year 9000 B.C. These early pioneers lived relatively peaceful lives in small clans and large tribes who survived by fishing, hunting, and eventually farming on the region’s fertile land. These wandering tribes eventually settled down into permanent societies including the Valdivia peoples who created intricate ceramic pottery creations, the Quitus peoples (after whom Quito is named) and the Caras who enjoyed considerable power and prestige in the region until the mid 1400’s when the small country was invaded by the Incas of Peru.

The Incas were ruthless in their pursuit of power over Ecuadorian land and many lives were lost defending the area – to no avail. Quechua, an Inca language still widely spoken in Ecuador was introduced to natives at this time and many great buildings and cities were built throughout the region. The Inca empire enjoyed its rule over Ecuador until the mid 1500’s when Spanish forces took the land in yet another series of bloody battles that ultimately led to the total conquering of Ecuadorian peoples. A period of enslavement ensued, and Spanish rulers continued to profit from the work of Ecuadorian citizens until major worldwide financial depressions caused economic downfall in the period between 1700 and 1800.

This collapse allowed for the possibility of native revolt and Ecuadorians from all walks of life banded together to retake the cities once ruled by their ancestors. Ecuador became fully independent in 1830 – but internal power struggles created a period of instability and fear. Democratic leadership and free elections in the 20th century helped to create a more peaceful society that has prospered over time – and tourism quickly became one of the fastest growing industries in this small South American hotspot.

Ecuador Packing List

Ecuador’s unique landscape includes four diverse subregions that all have individual weather patterns and climates – so travelers should consult with their individual itineraries to pinpoint which areas they will visit during their stay. When to Visit Ecuador

Ecuador is a small country with a hugely diverse population and a wide variety of biologically unique plants and animals. The peak travel season for tourists runs from June through September and from December through January – although stable weather patterns create a friendly environment for visitors throughout the year. There are four major climate zones in Ecuador, so tourists are able to plan travel around the current climate of each zone.

The Andes Region, including Quito and the Andean Highlands experiences cool and dry temperatures throughout the winter season which lasts roughly from June through September. Warmer temperatures are enjoyed during the summer months (December through March) but this time period is also considered the country’s rainy season so visitors can expect to experience a few showers during their travels.

The Amazon region experiences rainfall year round but temperatures are generally high – reaching 90+ degrees fahrenheit throughout the year. Heading towards the Pacific Coast region, travelers can expect high temperatures and sunny days, mixed in with short rainshowers during the day. Cooler temperatures and cloudy skies from June to September mean it will be too chilly to swim during the dry season in this area.

Finally, the Galapagos Region experiences dry weather and cool temperatures from June to December with rainy conditions and warmer weather starting in late December and lasting until May.

Galapagos Islands Descriptions

Located 600 miles off the coast of Ecuador, the Galápagos Islands are made up of 13 main islands and 48 islets. Scattered over an area of 36,000 square miles around the equator, none of the islands have ever been connected by land to any mainland area. The Islands are entirely volcanic and are considered to be one of the largest and most active sets of oceanic volcanoes in the world. The formation of the Islands began between three and five million years ago, very “young” in geologic terms. Volcanic eruptions broke through the ocean floor and initiated the building of underwater mountains, which continued to grow with successive eruptions and form the Galapagos Islands. The islands are still active today with new eruptions typically occurring in the western part of the archipelago.

History of the Galapagos

The first visitors to the Galapagos Islands were Native Americans from mainland South America . The islands bear no archaeological remains of dwellings or other structures, so it is quite unlikely that any native colonies were ever established there. Pirates and renegades first inhabited the islands during the early 1500s. They would hide and camp out on the islands after raiding Spanish colonial ports. Due to their inhospitable nature and lack of water, the Spanish paid the islands little attention, giving them the name “Las Encantadas” or bewitched islands.

A new period began in 1832 when Ecuador proclaimed its sovereignty over the islands. There were only a handful of permanent settlers at that time but their number had increased to around 300 by 1835 when the HMS Beagle arrived with Charles Darwin on board. Darwin spent five weeks in the Galapagos collecting and preserving specimens from four separate islands. His field observations led him finally to conclusions published in On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection in 1859. The first Galapagos colony was established on the island of Floreana. The archipelago experienced many attempted settlements from the mid-19th to the mid-20th century by individuals from Norway, the US, and the UK. During World War II, a United States Army Air Force base was established on Baltra Island. From Baltra, crews patrolled the eastern Pacific for enemy submarines and provided protection for the Panama Canal.

When making this once-in-a-lifetime trip, travelers have two main options to explore the islands: either through a land-based trip or a boat-based cruise through the islands. Find out what to expect and the relative advantages of each so you can choose the best option for making your Galapagos dreams come true.

What to Expect on a Galapagos Cruise

Your home for the duration of your Galapagos visit will be a live-a-board boat of your choice, ranging in size from 16-100 passengers. You will eat, sleep and relax on this vessel, which will be your base for the duration of your 4, 5, or 8-day expedition. Each morning, after a hearty breakfast, you will disembark into a 16-passenger dinghy, known locally as a “Panga” The Panga will take you for wildlife excursions, either onshore, or at snorkel sites. Your Galapagos naturalist guide will deepen your understanding and appreciation of the local wildlife, either on land or in the Galapagos Marine Reserve. After a morning of close encounters with some of the famous species of the area, you return to the boat for lunch and to prepare for the next excursion as the vessel navigates to another visitor site. What to Expect on A Galapagos Land-Based Trip

On land-based trips, you stay in eco-lodges or hotels in the port towns on the islands of Isabela, Santa Cruz, and San Cristobal. While you don’t visit as many islands as a cruise-based trip, land-based trips allow you to explore fewer islands in greater depth. From your land-based, you can get intimately acquainted with the island, independently exploring the wonders of the Galapagos in a small, private group with a Galapagos naturalist guide. Although it is impossible to visit as many islands as you would by sea, land-based trips will allow you to enjoy a variety of activities. For example, in the evenings relish fresh seafood at a family-run eatery then go for a sunset walk on Isabela’s beach and observe marine iguanas crawling out of the ocean onto the pristine white sand. During the day, active explorers might opt for sea kayaking, hiking on a dormant volcano, or mountain biking among coastal mangroves.

Advantages of a Land-Based Trip:

• Land-based excursions allow you to spend more time on each island, with opportunities to visit multiple sites and engage in a variety of activities.
• You will have more flexibility to experience the islands according to your own schedule and interests.

Best time to visit galapagos, wildlife year-round.

Because most of the wildlife remains on the islands year round, there’s always a lot to see. No matter when you visit, you’re guaranteed to encounter one of the highest concentrations of wildlife on the planet!

The Galapagos Islands have a sub-tropical climate with two seasons, the Hot Season and the Dry Season. The seasons on the islands are set and defined entirely by the ocean currents that surround them. The Hot Season starts in December and gradually works its way until May . During this season, warm waters from the Panama Current move south and bath the islands creating tropical conditions. Seas are generally calm, and the warmer temperatures and evaporation cause occasional tropical showers, which turn the islands green and lush. Air temperatures are hot and humid and range from 79 to 95 degrees Fahrenheit. The water temperature averages 77 degrees Fahrenheit. This is a great time to enjoy the warmer waters for snorkeling and to view green sea turtles that come into the islands to breed.

From June to November, the cooler Humboldt Current runs up the west coast of South America carrying rich oceanic upwellings from Antarctica that stimulate the breeding season for sea lions and sea birds. A desert spreads gradually in this tropical paradise. Evaporation decreases and this forms a thin layer of clouds over the islands that opens and closes throughout the day. This is known as the Dry Season with air temperatures ranging from 72 to 79 degrees Fahrenheit and sea temperatures averaging 67 degrees Fahrenheit (a wetsuit is recommended for snorkeling). This is the best time of year for observing dancing boobies, courting albatrosses, baby sea lions, whales, dolphins, and whale sharks.

Experiences on Classic Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, Peru!

O ver the years, whenever discussion of best hikes to do around the world: Machu Picchu name always came up! Having been used to hike wherever we like in US, deferred Machu Picchu hike due to requirement of having to go through travel agencies who in turn required permits through Peru government. After noticing many friends are in similar situation, finally brought together team of friends who committed to go and hike Classic Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. Following are my experiences/opinions/notes and may not resonate with every one requirements/experiences..etc.

Why should  one hike through Classic Inca Trail?

• Views of mountains, valleys, canyons are magnificent, spectacular, amazing! Clouds, Fog keeps rolling through all day giving many different views and photo opportunities. Cameras won’t capture beautiful views as good as one experiences live though.
• Given Inca Trail access controlled through permits and travel agencies: package includes access to porters, night time tents, food.. all of this lightens up your load to carry and provides more pleasant experience!
• 80% of Classic Inca Trail still seems intact and usable.. Essentially hiker walking through history and living through life of people in 1400s for few days.
• While Machu Picchu site very grand, spectacular: many mini Inca sites are built along Classic Inca Trail. Some accessible/visible only to hikers on day 1, day 2, day 3. By the time, we reach Machu Picchu on day 4, hiker gets feel for Inca site architecture, design, … and what to expect!
• Classic Inca Trail hike to Machu Picchu comes up and listed in best hikes in world, hikes of life time type lists!

Highlights of four day hike  on Classic Inca Trail!

Day-1 : starts with lot of pick ups from different hotels @Cusco starting as early as 4 AM. Hiking started around 9 AM. Best part of day-1 hike was river stream (soothing and pleasant) all day along the trail!

Day-2 : Toughest part of 4 days comes on day-2 with almost 3000 ft elevation gain for the day. Altitude sickness likely to show up on day-2. Weather in mountains and canyons so different and changes constantly, any photos best be taken as and when opportunities present themselves!

Day-3 : Lighter day among all 4 days where hike wraps up by lunch time and rest of time goes easy!

Day-4 : Starts at 3 AM getting ready to pack up, get ready to start hiking 5 ish when gates open up to hike towards South Gate entrance of Machu Picchu! By 9 AM, hiking group tour will reach entrance of Machu Picchu which is used by people who come by train. All four days experience up to 9 AM on day-4 not experienced/shared by anyone who visits Machu Picchu by train only!

Suggestions  for anyone going to take up Classic Inca Trail to Machu Picchu:

• Expect to start planning 3–6 months ahead in terms of getting permits, flights reservations, perform practice hikes
• Expect to have at least 3 flight segments: one flight segment from somewhere in US to southern most city inside US such as LAX, DFW, MIA… Second flight segment from border US hub to Lima, Peru & Third flight segment from Lima, Peru to Cusco, Peru which is base point for Classic Inca Trail hikers.
• Cusco, Peru city at 11,152 feet elevation: Expect altitude sickness symptoms and plan ahead for acclimatization time.

Challenges  experienced over 4 days:

• Classic Inca Trail involves dealing with lot of steps (10 to 20 inches height) going up or going down! Most of hikers not used to passing through thousands of steps in a day!! Steps combined with higher altitude + going up/down + backpack weight + live weather (humidity, wind, wetness) issues poses challenge to most hikers! Practice helps!!
• Get ready for early morning starts: some days expect to wake up 3 or 4 or 5 AM and start hiking within an hour.
• Bathroom/Restroom/Toilets: 2 out of 4 days at least usable, dependable. Remaining two days, expect facilities to be poor, unmaintained, bugs
• Expect to go without bath using water for 3 days! Even at the end of third day, expect to take bath using water from melting snow or river stream which is cold!
• Expect to operate without proper sleep on 1–2 days out of 4 days: Source of poor sleep could be possibilities of night time rain, wet floor, bugs, cold, windy, uneven surface in tent, smell in the area, worst case stomach upset keeping one awake all night, altitude sickness!
• Lot of Classic Inca Trail tour companies use same route, same campgrounds. Even 50 hikers in single file trail feels crowded and tough to take good photos without random people involved in pictures. I took up on either up front by 500 ft or be last person by 500 ft. Either approach gave challenges of walking fast when needed (which is not so fun at higher altitude when exhausted for day already)

What could have been better?

• Peru government checks passports to match with permits. Carrying passport all along hike in mountains, when rain can show up anytime, is not so comfortable to most!
• Passport/Permit matching is manual and time taking! Could be faster!!
• Inca sites do not have any descriptions/photos usually found in museums. Experience could have been better with illustrations.

Overall, memorable experience considering views of mountains, canyons, valleys, architecture and history of Inca sites, challenges of steps in hike, higher altitude, different country!! Of course, at a cost of minimum $3000 per person though!
