The World Wide Web is home to countless pages pertaining to every topic imaginable. Despite the vast choices presented by the internet, many users find themselves visiting the same handful of websites over and over again. According to a new report, there are five popular websites that rise above the rest when it comes to worldwide traffic.

To determine the world's most visited sites, the website building provider Zyro crunched internet data from SimilarWeb . They ranked Google at the top of the list. Web browsers from around the globe invest a combined 213.2 billion hours into the search engine, spending an average of 11 minutes and 58 seconds per session there.

The remaining four websites on the list are all social media platforms of some kind. In the No. 2 slot is YouTube, which racks up 142.6 billion hours of browsing time a year. The site also boasts the longest average visits at 21 minutes and 53 seconds. Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram make up the rest of the ranking.

America's web-surfing habits don't diverge far from the rest of the world's. The list of the most visited sites in the U.S. also includes Google, YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter in the top four spots. The only difference is that Yahoo replaces the social media site Instagram at No. 5.

Though there are other tools to display the sites you frequent most often, this Chrome feature makes it easier and quicker to check your browsing data without installing anything else on your browser.

Find Your Most Visited Sites on Chrome

You can think of this data as a "hidden" feature located in the recesses of the Settings page on Chrome. But it's easily accessible. Here's how:

• Launch Chrome on your PC.
• Go to Chrome's Settings by selecting the three vertical icon ( Customize and Control Google Chrome ) on the top-right of the browser.
• Select Privacy & security from the left sidebar.

The list mentions all the top-level domains you browsed, not the specific pages you visited. To see the particular pages, go to Chrome's History and see the list of your browsing activity. Chrome Journeys also shows you all the browsing breadcrumbs, which can help you find the link to the page you had forgotten.

Delete Your Most Visited Websites On Google Chrome

Clearing your browsing history will delete the most visited sites from the list. Here's how:

• Select the Trash icon next to the site's mention to delete a specific site from the list.
• To delete the record of the most visited sites, select the Clear all data button on top of the page.

Other Ways to See Your Most Visited Sites on Chrome

There are a couple of other ways to look at your most visited sites on Chrome. The first is evident but not detailed enough, while the second relies on Chrome extensions.

The Main Page on Chrome

When you open Chrome, you will see the thumbnails of your most visited sites on the main page. These "bookmarks" help you quickly relaunch the sites.

• You can add a shortcut by clicking "+" Add shortcut and entering the URL.
• Google also automatically adds shortcuts here based on your browsing behavior. Select Customize Chrome > Customize this page > Shortcuts > Most visited sites .
• Alternatively, select the Hide shortcuts toggle to turn off the grid and have a cleaner Chrome new tab.

You can also remove sites from the grid by clicking on the X on the top-right of the thumbnail. Then, another site shortcut (the next most visited) will take its place on the grid.

Install Chrome Extensions to See the Most Visited Sites

A few good Chrome extensions give you quicker and more detailed access to this information on the toolbar. In addition, you can use these extensions to view and manage your Chrome history in a more atomic way.

How to See the Most Visited Sites on the Chrome Mobile Browser

The most visited sites on a Chrome mobile browser on Android and iOS appear as tiles below the address bar on a new Chrome screen. This is separate from your Bookmarks. You can press and hold on the tiles to bring up the menu and then select Remove to delete one of the tiles. Another frequently visited site will replace it.

The Android screen usually displays a set of eight tiles, while the iOS screen shows a group of four tiles above the shortcuts for Bookmarks, Reading List, Recent Tabs, and History.

Right now, there's no way to add a specific site to this set of tiles except to browse it more frequently. Deleting the browsing history will remove the tiles from the homepage. The screenshot below is from the Chrome browser on iOS.

According to a study done by MIT, the average American spends 24 hours a week online. That’s an average. Some people are locked into the Internet every waking minute of their day. Despite its sheer size (currently over 644 million websites), people typically spend their time online on a minimal number of sites.

Today, we look at four of the most visited websites in the west and what makes them so popular.

Google is easily the most visited website globally, for a good reason. It is the most utilized search engine in the world. It’s so popular that searching, whether a user uses Google or not, is now called “googling.”

There is a myriad of reasons for this.

The Google homepage is straightforward to use, making it extremely popular on every type of device. More than that, it’s effective, providing better results than other search engines. The homepage features no advertisements, and even when you search, the advertisements are formatted much like the other content on the page. Some studies suggest that almost 70% of all Internet searches were done using Google.

Google’s ability to offer services that integrate with Google.com is legendary.

When you type (or speak) in a search query, you can immediately do many options from the search page. The number of votes it gives you makes it relatively pointless to use any other service. On a search results page, you will get results, access to media, access to contact information, access to immediate information if available, other queries on the same topic, and more.

Simply put, the romanticized nature of the Google search engine is warranted.

The quest for information is something that most of the most popular websites have in common.

YouTube is no different.

If you were to look at it from a practical standpoint, YouTube might be the most fantastic resource in the world. By nature, a video streaming site, YouTube can boast that it is effectively the second most utilized search engine globally, with over three billion search queries performed every month.

It’s said that half of the users active on the Internet are using YouTube.

Beyond that, it’s personable. The people who post content to YouTube do it for many reasons, but most of them are doing it to entertain you, educate you, and provide you with a user experience that will keep you coming back.

Some individuals and businesses make a solid living by only posting videos to the platform. Moreover, there is always something new to watch. If this were a list of the most addictive sites on the Internet, it would have to be toward the top of that list for sure.

For individuals, YouTube is a great resource. For businesses, it’s more of a mixed bag.

Sure, the marketing opportunities YouTube provides small businesses are a fantastic resource, but it can be a problem for employee productivity. As long as you keep the reins tight, allowing your staff to view YouTube at work makes for better employees, but if it is left unchecked, it can be an actual productivity sink. This ever-popular messaging application takes Facebook from a cool and valuable social networking site to a complete behemoth in the world of Internet applications. Beyond that, there are hundreds (or more) ways to connect with others on Facebook. It’s so personal that if you haven’t seen one of your Facebook friends in a while, you may find that you will discuss Facebook profiles early in the conversation when you do.

Like YouTube, Facebook can be quite a time-waster.

Since it incorporates many opportunities to be distracted, it’s not hard to waste time on social media. Facebook costs U.S.-based businesses upwards of $28 billion a year. That’s about 1.5 percent of all potential productivity.

As mentioned above, allowing your staff access to Facebook can help workplace morale, but if you are having trouble getting the most out of your staff, no one could blame you if you tightened the reins on their Facebook usage.

The largest online forum, Reddit, has been climbing this list for some time.

It is the self-proclaimed “front page of the Internet.” User statistics back this up as users spend more time on Reddit than any other site.

No website has the combination of informative, controversial, and entertaining content that Reddit does. Since users can find a forum about anything they want, it stands to reason that people who are engaged on specific topics would obsessively check it.

Semrush is a comprehensive suite of marketing solutions for online businesses. The platform offers a robust set of tools for everything from backlink analysis and content planning to SEO audits and ranking tracking.

One such tool is their Traffic Analytics solution, which can be used to check competitor website traffic.

Semrush has both paid and free versions. With the free version of Semrush’s Traffic Analytics , you can view up to 10 traffic overview reports a day.

The overview tab will provide important metrics for the website you are analyzing, including:

• These days, as mobile phones have become the largest platform in the world , way more than PCs or Tablets , every website has made a mobile app  or converted itself to a mobile form . This means that when you talk about a "website" you can think of the app , and just say "website" instead of app.
• You can try to talk about some more unique or niche websites. Many people will talk about the most common or popular websites like Google , Facebook , Instagram , TikTok , or others, and these are too obvious and too repetitive .
• Add some of the reasons from the board when describing the website. These will add depth to your description .

Part 2: Sample Answer

When it comes to surfing the web , I can say I’m both old-school and a modern Internet user . What does that mean? Well, I’m definitely trying new tools such as the new AI ChatGPT , I sometimes explore sensitive topics on Reddit and I’ve tried things such as online dating (to no success). However, I am an old-school user too because I’ve stuck to only one social media platform – Facebook , and I believe in internet piracy . Yes, that’s an uncomfortable position to hold but I am strongly for it and still use it when I can.

I begin with my use of internet in general.

A website I use quite often is a torrent website called ArenaBG . Perhaps I have to explain what torrents are at first – these are essentially files, shared across a vast network of computers for free. These files include movies, music, software, games, and anything else you can think of. Every time I want to watch a new movie or download some useful software , I’ll first look for it over there, and if it’s missing , I’ll search in other places. The torrent network has allowed me so much and has saved me thousands of dollars on the way.

I introduce the website and its benefits for me.

Torrenting and downloading were the biggest hype when I was a teenager, as at that time we didn’t have any streaming or any other type of paid content providers online. This was the first way for us to share files with each other without spending money. All we needed was a computer and a stable internet connection . And as a normal teenager, this was my way to download international music, movies, books, and all other things. It was my gateway to the world .

I describe more benefits I used the website for.

I mentioned in the beginning that it is an uncomfortable position . This is mainly because torrenting is banned in many countries, in order to protect the rights of artists and producers . Although I sympathize with small creators who don’t get credit for their work, we have to face reality . Most media is a monopoly that makes billions if not trillions of dollars in profits with anything they publish . This insane amount of money is not distributed equally and I will always hold the belief that torrenting is more helpful than harmful . This is why I use it and I will use it as long as it exists .

I finish with my feelings about the website.

• Unfortunately , some of the lowest would probably be educational or other actual practical apps . When the apps don't deliver entertainment , then they are mostly being ignored and disliked. Obviously badly designed apps are also at the bottom of the list , as they are simply unappealing .

The answer to this question changes really quickly all the time. There are so many of these game apps that explode in popularity f or a few months and then get completely forgotten . They are very popular with teenagers who are just jumping from one trending thing to anothe r. Social media is definitely hot all the time, but it is evolving as well . We used to use more of Weibo and QQ , and now it is all about Tik Tok . Times change and technology evolves really quickly. I can’t even remember the names of apps that were popular last year and became obsolete already. On the one hand , I’m happy about the technological development , but on the other … all that effort and work from the developers goes to complete waste 6 months later.

• The internet is more flexible in terms of its content . There are millions of websites that can provide a niche interest for a person from gaming , to exotic pets and beyond. The internet is also not very well controlled or " decentralized "   which means that people who make videos, write articles, or create pieces of entertainment , don't need to consider censorship . (at least in some places)
• Content on TV is more structured and it follows some logic and rules . This means that there are limited types of entertainment programs happening and people in our generation get bored quickly. There are more well-designed shows , TV series, or programs like the News or talk shows . TV has a lot of advertising going on all the time between all of these programs.

Examiner:   Are libraries still necessary if we have the internet? Why?

• Libraries can still provide services, beyond the obvious reading and borrowing of books. Public libraries can be designed as free , accessible public spaces where people organize activities, find like-minded individuals , and learn something new. They can organize courses for different hobbies or skills necessary in the 21st century .

A Case Against

• With the development of the internet and the explosion of learning content online, it is very difficult to argue for the existence of publically funded libraries . When everything we need in terms of information is at our fingertips so   libraries seem like a strange and isolated area , only older people would go to.

This is a good question. I’ve actually seen it on an exam once, and it’s difficult to say . Libraries definitely have something unique about them – they are quiet , people go there specifically to learn and nothing more, and it’s a safe space for someone who simply wants to read peacefully . The internet kind of provides all that and then more… however the more information a person consumes online , the more confusing it becomes. That’s because the internet has no filter and it has no clear way of providing information on what's right and what's wrong , and so it can lead to bad results while learning. So I still think we need libraries, as long as there are people who would use them regularly .

Examiner:   Why do some people like to read the news on the internet instead of getting it from TV?

• News on the internet gets published instantly while happening. This allows a person to stay informed 24/7 of the happenings from around the world. In addition , people can comment and discuss the news while happening, and that adds quite a lot of engagement to the news platforms or social media .

Variety of Opinions

• The internet provides an unlimited number of people who would try to present or write the news differently from others. This means that a person can compare between different opinions and can get a better, full picture of the problems happening in a day. TV and traditional media tend to present news and information with bias and one-sidedly .

Well on the one hand it is a natural development of technology. The internet provides way more channels of information and people kind of follow things that appeal to them. There are commentators , independent journalists , bloggers , podcasters , video creators , and many other types of individuals who create independent , self-centered , and somewhat unique ways of delivering the news and commenting on recent happenings . On the other hand … there has been this growing distrust of traditional media , as they have been exposed time and time again to misrepresenting news , straight-up lying to their audiences about important and impactful bits of news … And so people are naturally moving on .

Examiner:   What are the differences between old people and young people when they use the internet?

• Old people use the internet in a very limited way . Although these days there are grandmas and grandpas on TikTok and other social media places, they don't fully understand the platforms , don't do research , don't know how to " surf " the internet , and simply visit 2-3 websites they feel comfortable with . They are also reluctant to try many new internet tools that appear every year.

Young People

• Young people tend to change their consumption habits online very quickly. They jump on the latest and hottest types of websites or apps and experiment with new tools available online. This makes them more likely to try something new, but they don't build loyalty towards one website or brand online.

Well as the internet develops at a rapid pace , young people rush to follow the latest trend , the latest drama , or the latest controversy . For those who are older though , they rarely engage with these happenings , and at some times it feels that they are lagging behind , not knowing much about the “ hot ”, “ modern ” or “ trendy ” things online. The way we use the internet is different as well . For us, the younger generation we game , we socialize , we explore new venues … while the older generation mostly reads the news and stays informed with more traditional interests they’ve had from their own life.

Examiner:   How does the internet influence people?

• People can get highly motivated by watching motivational or inspirational videos and other sorts of content . People can learn tons of skills and knowledge by researching online , and that is really powerful . The internet can be a positive influence if it's used wisely .
• We live in times of mass disinformation , fake news , fake advertisements , and fake lifestyle advice . This environment is really dangerous for young people to grow up in , and unfortunately , there is hardly any restriction or control by authorities or parents alike .

There are many direct and indirect ways a person is being influenced . The direct one is obviously right there in front of our eyes – advertisements . Ads are everywhere, on banners , in between text , in text , before, in the middle, and after a video, and so on. We get so many ads it’s ridiculous and obviously , the goal is to click and buy something. The more subtle , invisible way we are influenced is by following and engaging with our interests and groups of people. Slowly but surely we are engaging with these bubbles and while we feel entertained , we are being absorbed within those bubbles and we lose the chance to socialize or explore something new. We tend to stick to the same movies, same hobbies, same games, and eventually , the same news, same celebrities , and the same biases those might express .

1. What kinds of websites do you often visit?

Well, websites about food and wildlife are my favorite sites. I love cooking, I can find great recipes to make a perfect meal for my family. Also, I am a member of animal protection group, I will search for some latest news related to that field.

2. What is your favourite website?

Chinese National Geography for sure. I am a big fan of it, I often go to their official website to see some useful information and I like to spend time in watching those amazing videos.

3. Are there any changes to the websites you often visit?

I’m not sure, but according to what I see, there’s a huge difference on the layout of webpage between the past and the present. It’s much more colorful, with clear fonts and pictures. Descriptions are shorter than before, an entire paragraph of information will no longer be on a page.

4. What kinds of websites are popular in your country?

Well, it varies. It’s easy for us to find what preferences we have on the Internet. Kids like cartoons or video games, young adults prefer vlogs or pets, while the elderly tend to see contents more about nature or peaceful things.

5. What kind of social networking websites do you like to use?

I mostly use the Facebook website for social networking . These days all the social networking sites have an app that we can install and use on our phones, so I don’t usually visit the websites. I use my cellphone apps.

6. Are you a social person?

I am not a very social person . However, I have a good social circle of friends . I like to meet them at least once every two months.

7. What kinds of people do you like to be friends with on those websites?

On those websites, I only have friends whom I already know or whom I know through someone. I do not make new friends on such websites.

8. Is it easy to find real friends on a social networking website?

No, it is not at all easy to find real friends on social networking websites. People make fake IDs, with fake information and dupe people .

Pew Research Center has conducted many surveys about abortion over the years, providing a lens into Americans’ views on whether the procedure should be legal, among a host of other questions.

In a  Center survey  conducted nearly a year after the Supreme Court’s June 2022 decision that  ended the constitutional right to abortion , 62% of U.S. adults said the practice should be legal in all or most cases, while 36% said it should be illegal in all or most cases. Another survey conducted a few months before the decision showed that relatively few Americans take an absolutist view on the issue .

Find answers to common questions about abortion in America, based on data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Guttmacher Institute, which have tracked these patterns for several decades:

How many abortions are there in the U.S. each year?

How has the number of abortions in the u.s. changed over time, what is the abortion rate among women in the u.s. how has it changed over time, what are the most common types of abortion, how many abortion providers are there in the u.s., and how has that number changed, what percentage of abortions are for women who live in a different state from the abortion provider, what are the demographics of women who have had abortions, when during pregnancy do most abortions occur, how often are there medical complications from abortion.

This compilation of data on abortion in the United States draws mainly from two sources: the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Guttmacher Institute, both of which have regularly compiled national abortion data for approximately half a century, and which collect their data in different ways.

The CDC data that is highlighted in this post comes from the agency’s “abortion surveillance” reports, which have been published annually since 1974 (and which have included data from 1969). Its figures from 1973 through 1996 include data from all 50 states, the District of Columbia and New York City – 52 “reporting areas” in all. Since 1997, the CDC’s totals have lacked data from some states (most notably California) for the years that those states did not report data to the agency. The four reporting areas that did not submit data to the CDC in 2021 – California, Maryland, New Hampshire and New Jersey – accounted for approximately 25% of all legal induced abortions in the U.S. in 2020, according to Guttmacher’s data. Most states, though,  do  have data in the reports, and the figures for the vast majority of them came from each state’s central health agency, while for some states, the figures came from hospitals and other medical facilities.

Discussion of CDC abortion data involving women’s state of residence, marital status, race, ethnicity, age, abortion history and the number of previous live births excludes the low share of abortions where that information was not supplied. For the numbers of deaths caused by induced abortions in 1963 and 1965, this analysis looks at reports by the then-U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare, a precursor to the Department of Health and Human Services. In computing those figures, we excluded abortions listed in the report under the categories “spontaneous or unspecified” or as “other.” (“Spontaneous abortion” is another way of referring to miscarriages.)

Guttmacher data in this post comes from national surveys of abortion providers that Guttmacher has conducted 19 times since 1973. Guttmacher compiles its figures after contacting every known provider of abortions – clinics, hospitals and physicians’ offices – in the country. It uses questionnaires and health department data, and it provides estimates for abortion providers that don’t respond to its inquiries. (In 2020, the last year for which it has released data on the number of abortions in the U.S., it used estimates for 12% of abortions.) For most of the 2000s, Guttmacher has conducted these national surveys every three years, each time getting abortion data for the prior two years. For each interim year, Guttmacher has calculated estimates based on trends from its own figures and from other data.

The latest full summary of Guttmacher data came in the institute’s report titled “Abortion Incidence and Service Availability in the United States, 2020.” It includes figures for 2020 and 2019 and estimates for 2018. The report includes a methods section.

In addition, this post uses data from StatPearls, an online health care resource, on complications from abortion.

An exact answer is hard to come by. The CDC and the Guttmacher Institute have each tried to measure this for around half a century, but they use different methods and publish different figures.

The last year for which the CDC reported a yearly national total for abortions is 2021. It found there were 625,978 abortions in the District of Columbia and the 46 states with available data that year, up from 597,355 in those states and D.C. in 2020. The corresponding figure for 2019 was 607,720.

The last year for which Guttmacher reported a yearly national total was 2020. It said there were 930,160 abortions that year in all 50 states and the District of Columbia, compared with 916,460 in 2019.

• How the CDC gets its data: It compiles figures that are voluntarily reported by states’ central health agencies, including separate figures for New York City and the District of Columbia. Its latest totals do not include figures from California, Maryland, New Hampshire or New Jersey, which did not report data to the CDC. ( Read the methodology from the latest CDC report .)
• How Guttmacher gets its data: It compiles its figures after contacting every known abortion provider – clinics, hospitals and physicians’ offices – in the country. It uses questionnaires and health department data, then provides estimates for abortion providers that don’t respond. Guttmacher’s figures are higher than the CDC’s in part because they include data (and in some instances, estimates) from all 50 states. ( Read the institute’s latest full report and methodology .)

While the Guttmacher Institute supports abortion rights, its empirical data on abortions in the U.S. has been widely cited by  groups  and  publications  across the political spectrum, including by a  number of those  that  disagree with its positions .

These estimates from Guttmacher and the CDC are results of multiyear efforts to collect data on abortion across the U.S. Last year, Guttmacher also began publishing less precise estimates every few months , based on a much smaller sample of providers.

The figures reported by these organizations include only legal induced abortions conducted by clinics, hospitals or physicians’ offices, or those that make use of abortion pills dispensed from certified facilities such as clinics or physicians’ offices. They do not account for the use of abortion pills that were obtained  outside of clinical settings .

The annual number of U.S. abortions rose for years after Roe v. Wade legalized the procedure in 1973, reaching its highest levels around the late 1980s and early 1990s, according to both the CDC and Guttmacher. Since then, abortions have generally decreased at what a CDC analysis called  “a slow yet steady pace.”

Guttmacher says the number of abortions occurring in the U.S. in 2020 was 40% lower than it was in 1991. According to the CDC, the number was 36% lower in 2021 than in 1991, looking just at the District of Columbia and the 46 states that reported both of those years.

(The corresponding line graph shows the long-term trend in the number of legal abortions reported by both organizations. To allow for consistent comparisons over time, the CDC figures in the chart have been adjusted to ensure that the same states are counted from one year to the next. Using that approach, the CDC figure for 2021 is 622,108 legal abortions.)

There have been occasional breaks in this long-term pattern of decline – during the middle of the first decade of the 2000s, and then again in the late 2010s. The CDC reported modest 1% and 2% increases in abortions in 2018 and 2019, and then, after a 2% decrease in 2020, a 5% increase in 2021. Guttmacher reported an 8% increase over the three-year period from 2017 to 2020.

As noted above, these figures do not include abortions that use pills obtained outside of clinical settings.

Guttmacher says that in 2020 there were 14.4 abortions in the U.S. per 1,000 women ages 15 to 44. Its data shows that the rate of abortions among women has generally been declining in the U.S. since 1981, when it reported there were 29.3 abortions per 1,000 women in that age range.

The CDC says that in 2021, there were 11.6 abortions in the U.S. per 1,000 women ages 15 to 44. (That figure excludes data from California, the District of Columbia, Maryland, New Hampshire and New Jersey.) Like Guttmacher’s data, the CDC’s figures also suggest a general decline in the abortion rate over time. In 1980, when the CDC reported on all 50 states and D.C., it said there were 25 abortions per 1,000 women ages 15 to 44.

That said, both Guttmacher and the CDC say there were slight increases in the rate of abortions during the late 2010s and early 2020s. Guttmacher says the abortion rate per 1,000 women ages 15 to 44 rose from 13.5 in 2017 to 14.4 in 2020. The CDC says it rose from 11.2 per 1,000 in 2017 to 11.4 in 2019, before falling back to 11.1 in 2020 and then rising again to 11.6 in 2021. (The CDC’s figures for those years exclude data from California, D.C., Maryland, New Hampshire and New Jersey.)

The CDC broadly divides abortions into two categories: surgical abortions and medication abortions, which involve pills. Since the Food and Drug Administration first approved abortion pills in 2000, their use has increased over time as a share of abortions nationally, according to both the CDC and Guttmacher.

The majority of abortions in the U.S. now involve pills, according to both the CDC and Guttmacher. The CDC says 56% of U.S. abortions in 2021 involved pills, up from 53% in 2020 and 44% in 2019. Its figures for 2021 include the District of Columbia and 44 states that provided this data; its figures for 2020 include D.C. and 44 states (though not all of the same states as in 2021), and its figures for 2019 include D.C. and 45 states.

Guttmacher, which measures this every three years, says 53% of U.S. abortions involved pills in 2020, up from 39% in 2017.

Two pills commonly used together for medication abortions are mifepristone, which, taken first, blocks hormones that support a pregnancy, and misoprostol, which then causes the uterus to empty. According to the FDA, medication abortions are safe  until 10 weeks into pregnancy.

Surgical abortions conducted  during the first trimester  of pregnancy typically use a suction process, while the relatively few surgical abortions that occur  during the second trimester  of a pregnancy typically use a process called dilation and evacuation, according to the UCLA School of Medicine.

In 2020, there were 1,603 facilities in the U.S. that provided abortions,  according to Guttmacher . This included 807 clinics, 530 hospitals and 266 physicians’ offices.

While clinics make up half of the facilities that provide abortions, they are the sites where the vast majority (96%) of abortions are administered, either through procedures or the distribution of pills, according to Guttmacher’s 2020 data. (This includes 54% of abortions that are administered at specialized abortion clinics and 43% at nonspecialized clinics.) Hospitals made up 33% of the facilities that provided abortions in 2020 but accounted for only 3% of abortions that year, while just 1% of abortions were conducted by physicians’ offices.

Looking just at clinics – that is, the total number of specialized abortion clinics and nonspecialized clinics in the U.S. – Guttmacher found the total virtually unchanged between 2017 (808 clinics) and 2020 (807 clinics). However, there were regional differences. In the Midwest, the number of clinics that provide abortions increased by 11% during those years, and in the West by 6%. The number of clinics  decreased  during those years by 9% in the Northeast and 3% in the South.

The total number of abortion providers has declined dramatically since the 1980s. In 1982, according to Guttmacher, there were 2,908 facilities providing abortions in the U.S., including 789 clinics, 1,405 hospitals and 714 physicians’ offices.

The CDC does not track the number of abortion providers.

In the District of Columbia and the 46 states that provided abortion and residency information to the CDC in 2021, 10.9% of all abortions were performed on women known to live outside the state where the abortion occurred – slightly higher than the percentage in 2020 (9.7%). That year, D.C. and 46 states (though not the same ones as in 2021) reported abortion and residency data. (The total number of abortions used in these calculations included figures for women with both known and unknown residential status.)

The share of reported abortions performed on women outside their state of residence was much higher before the 1973 Roe decision that stopped states from banning abortion. In 1972, 41% of all abortions in D.C. and the 20 states that provided this information to the CDC that year were performed on women outside their state of residence. In 1973, the corresponding figure was 21% in the District of Columbia and the 41 states that provided this information, and in 1974 it was 11% in D.C. and the 43 states that provided data.

In the District of Columbia and the 46 states that reported age data to  the CDC in 2021, the majority of women who had abortions (57%) were in their 20s, while about three-in-ten (31%) were in their 30s. Teens ages 13 to 19 accounted for 8% of those who had abortions, while women ages 40 to 44 accounted for about 4%.

The vast majority of women who had abortions in 2021 were unmarried (87%), while married women accounted for 13%, according to  the CDC , which had data on this from 37 states.

In the District of Columbia, New York City (but not the rest of New York) and the 31 states that reported racial and ethnic data on abortion to  the CDC , 42% of all women who had abortions in 2021 were non-Hispanic Black, while 30% were non-Hispanic White, 22% were Hispanic and 6% were of other races.

Looking at abortion rates among those ages 15 to 44, there were 28.6 abortions per 1,000 non-Hispanic Black women in 2021; 12.3 abortions per 1,000 Hispanic women; 6.4 abortions per 1,000 non-Hispanic White women; and 9.2 abortions per 1,000 women of other races, the  CDC reported  from those same 31 states, D.C. and New York City.

For 57% of U.S. women who had induced abortions in 2021, it was the first time they had ever had one,  according to the CDC.  For nearly a quarter (24%), it was their second abortion. For 11% of women who had an abortion that year, it was their third, and for 8% it was their fourth or more. These CDC figures include data from 41 states and New York City, but not the rest of New York.

Nearly four-in-ten women who had abortions in 2021 (39%) had no previous live births at the time they had an abortion,  according to the CDC . Almost a quarter (24%) of women who had abortions in 2021 had one previous live birth, 20% had two previous live births, 10% had three, and 7% had four or more previous live births. These CDC figures include data from 41 states and New York City, but not the rest of New York.

The vast majority of abortions occur during the first trimester of a pregnancy. In 2021, 93% of abortions occurred during the first trimester – that is, at or before 13 weeks of gestation,  according to the CDC . An additional 6% occurred between 14 and 20 weeks of pregnancy, and about 1% were performed at 21 weeks or more of gestation. These CDC figures include data from 40 states and New York City, but not the rest of New York.

About 2% of all abortions in the U.S. involve some type of complication for the woman , according to an article in StatPearls, an online health care resource. “Most complications are considered minor such as pain, bleeding, infection and post-anesthesia complications,” according to the article.

The CDC calculates  case-fatality rates for women from induced abortions – that is, how many women die from abortion-related complications, for every 100,000 legal abortions that occur in the U.S .  The rate was lowest during the most recent period examined by the agency (2013 to 2020), when there were 0.45 deaths to women per 100,000 legal induced abortions. The case-fatality rate reported by the CDC was highest during the first period examined by the agency (1973 to 1977), when it was 2.09 deaths to women per 100,000 legal induced abortions. During the five-year periods in between, the figure ranged from 0.52 (from 1993 to 1997) to 0.78 (from 1978 to 1982).

The CDC calculates death rates by five-year and seven-year periods because of year-to-year fluctuation in the numbers and due to the relatively low number of women who die from legal induced abortions.

In 2020, the last year for which the CDC has information , six women in the U.S. died due to complications from induced abortions. Four women died in this way in 2019, two in 2018, and three in 2017. (These deaths all followed legal abortions.) Since 1990, the annual number of deaths among women due to legal induced abortion has ranged from two to 12.

The annual number of reported deaths from induced abortions (legal and illegal) tended to be higher in the 1980s, when it ranged from nine to 16, and from 1972 to 1979, when it ranged from 13 to 63. One driver of the decline was the drop in deaths from illegal abortions. There were 39 deaths from illegal abortions in 1972, the last full year before Roe v. Wade. The total fell to 19 in 1973 and to single digits or zero every year after that. (The number of deaths from legal abortions has also declined since then, though with some slight variation over time.)

The number of deaths from induced abortions was considerably higher in the 1960s than afterward. For instance, there were 119 deaths from induced abortions in  1963  and 99 in  1965 , according to reports by the then-U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare, a precursor to the Department of Health and Human Services. The CDC is a division of Health and Human Services.

Earth just experienced a severe geomagnetic storm. Here's what that means – and what you can expect.

The planet was just slammed with what government officials dubbed a severe geomagnetic storm, the second-highest level of NOAA's rating system. The event brought "a major disturbance in Earth's magnetic field" that may have impacted infrastructure and made the northern lights visible farther than usual, officials said. 

NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center issued a geomagnetic storm watch on Saturday, saying that a coronal mass ejection was detected and expected to hit the planet late that same day with impacts into Monday. Coronal mass ejections, or CMEs, are when a large cloud of plasma and magnetic field bursts from the sun's corona. 

This particular CME exploded alongside a solar flare on Friday, an event that occurs when electromagnetic radiation suddenly erupts from the sun. NOAA says these flares can last hours and the eruption "travels at the speed of light," meaning it can impact Earth as soon as it is observed. An X-class flare , like what was observed with the CME, is the strongest type of flare, although this particular one was not the strongest on record. NOAA forecasters did say, however, that more X-class flares are possible through Wednesday.

"The public should not be concerned, but may wish to keep informed by visiting our webpage for any forecast changes and updates," NOAA said on Saturday, saying a moderate geomagnetic storm was possible. By Sunday afternoon, however, the agency alerted of a  "severe" storm  that could potentially impact technology – and eventually extend the northern lights  as far south as Alabama .

"The public should not anticipate adverse impacts and no action is necessary, but they should stay properly informed of storm progression by visiting our webpage," NOAA said in its alert, adding that "normally mitigable" problems with voltage control was possible, as well as "frequent and longer periods of GPS degradation." 

"Infrastructure operators have been notified to take action to mitigate any possible impacts," the agency said.

On Monday morning, NOAA said that the impacts of the CME "appear to be weakening," but that solar wind speeds – which help carry the event – were still elevated. The warning of a "moderate" storm has since been extended. Moderate geomagnetic storms , classified as G2, can potentially impact high-latitude power systems, damage transformers and extend the northern lights to New York and Idaho. It can also potentially require flight ground control to issue corrective actions for orientation.

What’s the Cloud Outlook for Eclipse Day? See if History Is on Your Side.

April 8 will be your last opportunity to see a total solar eclipse in the contiguous United States or Canada until 2044. Mexico will have to wait even longer. But if clouds fill the sky as the moon passes between the sun and Earth, your shot at seeing the spectacle could be lost.

It’s still too early to know with much certainty what the weather will be like in your area that day — cloud forecasts aren’t reliable that far in advance. But the map of cloud coverage data above, derived from satellite measurements, gives the next best thing — a historical account of where the skies are more likely to be clear on that spring Monday.

The map shows the average cloudiness — the portion of the sky covered by clouds — for April 7 through April 14 for the past 20 years, using measurements collected by the MODIS instrument aboard NASA’s Aqua satellite.

This analysis shows that cloudiness tends to increase farther north along the path of totality, or the relatively thin strip of land where the moon will fully block the sun.

That could mean your best chance for clear skies is in Mexico, with about a 35 percent average chance of cloud cover. For those in the United States, Texas has the lowest chance of cloud cover at about 45 percent. Where you go in Texas may matter, too — historical cloud cover in Dallas is no better than it is in Cleveland.

But historical averages aren’t an oracle. The composite map above is derived from satellite measurements taken at just one time of day — around 1:30 p.m. local time — and large-scale atmospheric dynamics like El Niño can have a big influence over cloud formation.

Ultimately, climatology — the study of weather over time — can only get you so far. What really matters is the weather on eclipse day.

About that, said Jay Anderson, a Canadian meteorologist, “It’s going to be what it’s going to be.”

Mr. Anderson runs a website, Eclipsophile, that provides detailed analysis of weather conditions to aid eclipse chasers. He says cloud forecasts usually become more reliable about a week ahead of an event and improve as the date approaches.

Even with the best forecasts, sometimes you need a bit of luck. In 2009, he directed a tour group in China to travel about 125 miles outside Shanghai to avoid bad weather. It was pouring when they reached their destination. But as the period of totality approached, the rain suddenly stopped and the clouds parted. They were able to see the total eclipse for almost five minutes.

“Sometimes the weather gods are smiling at you,” Mr. Anderson said.

Over the years, he has worked with tour companies to guide eclipse viewers to the best locations, likening eclipse viewing to storm chasing. On his trips, he has had to tell cruise captains to turn their boats around and bus drivers to search for hours to find a break in the clouds.

Even under cloudy conditions, you would still notice a sudden plunge into darkness as the moon passes in front of the sun. But you won’t be able to see all the details of the eclipse — the shadow bands, the diamond ring, the sun’s corona.

“It’s muted compared to being in the sunlight itself,” Mr. Anderson said.
