Chirundu Area - River Lodges & Camps along the Zambezi

In this series of blogs we feature Wild Zambezi’s network partners which are Safari Lodges or Camps located directly on the Zambezi River within Zimbabwe.  Check out our location maps, images and the links provided below to these beautiful places – all reliant on the wonderful wilderness surrounds of this magnificent river.

CHIRUNDU AREA:  ZAMBEZI RIVER LODGES & CAMPS

Once the waters of the Zambezi River have made their escape northwards from the vast open expanses of Lake Kariba, through the electricity turbines of the Kariba Dam hydro-electric project, their passage is channelled between the high border mountains separating Zimbabwe from Zambia, through the narrow, 25-km-long Kariba Gorge.

When the river exits the Kariba Gorge, it spreads out to cover a much wider part of the Zambezi Valley passing under the two large road bridges at the border down of Chirundu and flowing past the Mongwe fishing camps towards the Middle Zambezi World Heritage Site complex of Mana Pools/Sapi and Chewore.

Tamarind tented camp, chirundu safari lodge, zambeasy campsites.

The luxurious Tamarind Tented Camp is situated within a grove of Tamarind trees on the banks of the Zambezi River. This stretch of riverside forest and flood plains are teaming with wild animals and birdlife. For client safety the camp is protected by a low predator fence. Chirundu Safari Lodge is located on a ridge with superb views overlooking the Zambezi Valley within our wildlife sanctuary. The Lodge is protected by a low horizontal perimeter fence which allows visitors to safely watch the myriad of wildlife and birdlife that congregate day and night at nearby water holes. The mighty Zambezi River is less than 1 km away making easy access for boating and river activities.

For those in search of a more traditional African self-camping experience, the Zambeasy Campsites on the banks of the Zambezi River is ideal. These serviced sites are situated on a peninsula giving safety to the campers from the abundant wildlife. Every site has breath-taking views of the Zambezi River and Zambezi Valley escarpment. Each campsites is situated a good distance from the other and all have their own independent facilities.

We have just had a lovely weekend at Zambeasy Campsites during the June half term. The campsite was lovely with a stunning view of the river and good facilities. We used their tents and mattresses which made the packing much easier for the weekend. I am looking forward to our next visit. We had some visits from elephants and hippos. We have just returned from a fabulous stay at Tiger Safaris - they've opened a lovely restaurant and we saw so much game at the waterhole - a very relaxing holiday being looked after by excellent staff! Thanks to you all - we will be back!

Chirundu is the border town between Zambia and Zimbabwe, it is surrounded by hills and therefore provides some jaw-dropping views of the Zambezi River - this scenic drive will definitely provide enough picture-worthy moments during your travels through Zimbabwe. The roads are a little busy with Chirundu being a border town, but more than this, elephant sitings are very common, so be wary while you drive. The reason elephants are the order of the day is simple, Chirundu is also situated in the Hurungwe Safari area, and though it is guarded, it is not fenced. If fishing is more your thing, then grab your gear and get yourself to Chirundu for some Tiger Fishing along the Zambezi which can be done all year round! Brace yourself for some real outdoor experiences in this Northern town in Zimbabwe.
