Last month, giant panda Jia Jia gave birth to a panda cub at the Singapore Zoo after a few years of trying. Singaporeans cooed over the adorable little newborn currently under the care of Jia Jia, who, according to the Wildlife Reserves of Singapore, would “sigh when she had to get up to tend to the cub” (parents can relate).

Aptly enough, there’s a café within River Safari called Mama Panda Kitchen , which serves a selection of adorable panda-themed snacks and beverages including red bean buns and coffee adorned with a panda motif.

Prices are reasonable for an eatery in a tourist attraction, starting from $2.90 for a large Panda Chocolate/Red Bean Bao as well as a cute Panda Cup with chocolate ice cream and Panda Dark Chocolate Donut. There’s also a Giant Panda Cappuccino ($6.90) with a sprinkled-on cocoa powder panda.

The panda bun looks pretty true to its photo.

Other than snacks and desserts, the café also serves mains like Braised Chicken with Mushroom Wok Rice ($10.90), Chicken Cutlet Ramen ($12.90) and Braised Beef Ramen ($13.90). No panda theme for those, though.

For more savoury options, you can get either the Quiche Smoke Salmon ($13.90) or the Quiche Lorraine ($13.90) .

Birds of Paradise Gelato Boutique & Sandwich Bar is a great place to stop by to beat the heat and indulge in some fine ice cream. River Safari Singapore

Singapore is home to many firsts in Asia, and the River Safari Singapore is one of them. The attraction features the first and only wildlife adventure park in the region to take the freshwater ecosystem as a theme.

River Safari Singapore hosts a collection of at least 5,000 animals from various species, 42 of which are currently endangered.

River Safari Singapore also offers the one-of-a-kind experience of exploring the ‘habitat’ of the Mekong River which is Southeast Asia’s longest freshwater river. This man-made river simulates the deep waters and the natural environment of Mekong.

The River Safari also has an artificial flooded forest that resembles that of the Amazon after being taken over by a heavy downpour. To give guests the complete Amazonian feel, the flooded forest is also graced by different animals which are endemic to the Amazon such as the arapaima and the manatee.

I remembered that I have tried it before back at 2016 with my family together. The filling for red bean was quite little and got weird taste but the bun was really dry aftertaste.

Forgot to take picture but the food slightly overpriced. Taste not terrible tho for zoo food, ordered the pao pao and chicken croissant.

Paus was $2.90 each with red bean and chocolate. Cappuccino was $6.90. The paus were cold and even had broken lines on it. Taste was ok. Cappuccino tasted abit diluted, have to wait and collect later.

Only buy this if you’re able to settle for cheap machine-brewed coffee. This cup of cappuccino tasted like a cup of froth milk, with a hint of diluted - just unimpressive coffee nodes in it. Don’t waste your time too if you’re looking for a caffeine boost... I think the coffee content was so minute compared to the milk that I felt more tired trying to finish it up. (Good news - there’s a Starbucks just right outside) The advice nobody asked for - don’t buy if you’re looking for a good cup of coffee, buy if you’re a sucker for cute things (like me lol) and want to waste your money😔 1 star for the cute panda😔 Rate:🌟

Super huge sandwich because of the three layers of bread. The fact that it was cut into two created the illusion that was even bigger. I was impressed by how toasty and slightly buttery the bread slices were, as well as the freshly cooked, slightly runny egg yolk. However, it all amounted to a normal kind of sandwich you’d expect. After all, it’s just vegetables, cheese, ham and egg stacked together - nothing much you can expect. Side of wedges came extremely crisp! Rate:🌟🌟

Priced at $2.90 each, i believed i paid only for the photos. The filling was super little.... the ratio of bread to filling is 3:1. Taste wise, it was mediocre. However the bun was very cute.

We ordered the panda baos in chocolate custard and red bean both, the garlic potato wedges and the club sandwiches to share. Surprisingly, it didn't cost us a $50 😅 It tastes good. Not too bad for a once in a while. 👍🏻

It has been quite awhile since my last visit to Singapore’s River Safari! Had a fun time exploring River Safari this weekend! Not super crowded, with just the right amount of crowd for a peaceful time to watch/view the animals☺️

The soup was pretty tasteless, which made it seem like a healthier counterpart to the fried chicken. The fried chicken cutlet was good, but the noodles really did not have much flavour to it. Overall a mediocre meal but not complaining since it is rather affordable considering the location. Would probably try something else here! Rate:🌟🌟

This spicy chicken tasted like mala chicken. I liked the flavour but sadly the portion of chicken wasn’t really generous. There were 5 relatively small pieces with rice as well as a lot of other vegetables, which wouldn’t be really worth $10.90 outside but for the River Safari it is considerably a reasonable price.. still a decent food option in a tourist place though! After eating a few mouth, i decided i needed to post a review that the noodles is just plain and no taste whatsoever.

The chicken was the only saving grace.

The bun was soft and fluffy, with the chocolate custard being creamy and not too sweet. The service was fast too, as the buns were pre-made and served within minutes when there's no queue. An interesting eat to try our for less than $3.

After seeing the adorable jiajia & kaikai, we had to eat their fave treats. I like the chocolate custard bun. At $2.90 each, this place does marketing right. Still, a nice pit stop while at river safari.

Red bean and choco custard ($2.90 ea), decent with thick, smooth fillings, you have to have or you've not been to the River Safari! It's the one time I could say, Darling, I ate Jiajia and Kaikai. And he was horrified 😱 so I was pleased. Also to make him a 🐼 face mask, tearing the bun's skin upwards from the bottom 🤦🏽‍♂️

Good spot with super cute paus - enjoyable break after the walk through the 'rivers' in the river safari. Gyoza and wanton could be more tender, personally preferred the prawn wantons as they were lighter than the meat in the gyoza. Lotus root crisps were thin, could be crispier. Coffee was average and in a rather large serving, good for sharing.

Singapore gets first panda cub, born to Kai Kai and Jia Jia at River Safari

SINGAPORE - The nation's first panda cub was born on Saturday (Aug 14) at the River Safari at about 7.50am, to parents Kai Kai and Jia Jia.

In a statement on Sunday, Wildlife Reserves Singapore (WRS), which operates the River Safari, called the birth "a joyful boost to the ongoing National Day celebrations this year".

It added that the panda cub's gender is yet to be determined and will be announced later.

Mother Jia Jia and her cub, which weighs about 200g, are in an off-exhibit den to give them time to nurse and bond, WRS said.

WRS told The Straits Times on Sunday evening that the public will be able to see Jia Jia and the cub in their exhibit in approximately three months.

"We will post regular updates with videos and photos of Jia Jia and her cub on our social media platforms so everyone can keep abreast of their development," it said.

WRS added that more updates will be announced in the coming weeks, including a the cub's name which it called "another important milestone ahead".

The successful birth comes after the giant pandas' seventh breeding season. They began mating in 2015.

Giant pandas are notoriously difficult to breed in captivity, in part due to the narrow window for conception. Females like Jia Jia ovulate only once a year, and her fertility also peaks for just 24 to 36 hours.

WRS said 13-year-old Kai Kai and 12-year-old Jia Jia displayed signs of being in heat in April this year.

It added that its animal care team was optimistic that the pandas would naturally breed this year, as the pair had shown improvements in their mating techniques the year before.

However, the keepers did not observe clear signs of successful mounting.

Experts from the China Conservation and Research Centre for Giant Panda advised WRS vets to perform artificial insemination before the end of Jia Jia's receptive period, to make the most of the once-a-year breeding season.

Dr Cheng Wen-Haur, WRS' deputy chief executive and chief life sciences officer, said ultrasound scans done in July showed a thickening of Jia Jia's cervix and some fluid in the uterine horns.

"We stayed hopeful for Jia Jia, while maintaining her ultrasound checks to monitor developments," he added, noting that female giant pandas can experience pseudopregnancy - where they show hormonal and behavioural signs of pregnancy even when they are not expecting.

Dr Cheng said the only sure way to confirm a pregnancy is through seeing a foetus that is near to term.

The gestation period ranges from three to more than five months.

On Aug 10, a WRS vet saw a clear outline of a foetus with a strong heartbeat during an ultrasound scan.

"Jia Jia's first pregnancy and birth of a cub is a significant milestone for us in the care of this threatened species in Singapore," said Dr Cheng. "The work continues now with supporting the first-time mother to raise her newborn cub."

WRS said that outside of China, giant panda breeding is quite sporadic.

"Some countries are still to achieve successful breeding despite many years of attempts," it added.

"For those that have been successful, not many have been able to repeat the success on a regular basis."

Kai Kai and Jia Jia arrived in Singapore in September 2012, on a decade-long loan from China.

Sponsored by real estate company CapitaLand, they are one of the River Safari's main attractions.

Under the agreement, the baby panda will return to China when it turns two, said Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Transport Baey Yam Keng in a comment on his Facebook post about the birth.

Asked about the panda family's future, given the newborn cub, WRS said that details will be announced in due course.

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said he was delighted by the birth of the panda cub, and congratulated the WRS team.

He wrote on Facebook: "It is famously difficult for pandas in captivity to reproduce. Pandas have only a narrow window each year to conceive.

"This is the seventh attempt for Kai Kai and Jia Jia. Their keepers deserve kudos for this difficult and rare accomplishment, and for persevering despite previous failures."

Thousands of well-wishers gathered Wednesday to bid farewell to the first giant panda born in South Korea, Fu Bao, who left for China in a high-tech non-vibrating vehicle typically used for transporting semi-conductors.

Beijing has long used "panda diplomacy" as a form of soft power, and Fu Bao's parents -- Ai Bao and Le Bao -- were gifted to South Korea in 2016 by Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Fu Bao -- which means "treasure that gives happiness" -- was born in 2020 and is a celebrity in South Korea, with her videos on the zoo's YouTube channel attracting around 500 million views.

The Everland amusement park, where Fu Bao lived, says approximately 5.5 million people -- around one-tenth of the entire South Korean population -- have visited the park to see her.

Thanks to her popularity, the number of visitors to Everland's Panda World doubled last year to 2.15 million, compared to 1.07 million in 2020 before Fu Bao's arrival, the theme park said.

Fu Bao welcomed her younger twin sisters last year, named Rui Bao and Hui Bao, whose births also triggered an outpouring of excitement online in South Korea.

Beijing only loans pandas to foreign zoos, which must usually return any offspring within a few years of their birth to join the country's breeding programme.

Under an agreement between Seoul and Beijing, Fu Bao's parents can stay in South Korea until 2031, but her twin sisters, like Fu Bao herself, must return to China before they turn four years old.

"Fu Bao left Everland at around 11 am," the zoo said in a statement, adding the panda will leave for China via the Incheon International Airport on a chartered plane.

Before leaving Everland, the panda bid farewell to some 6,000 South Korean fans at a brief ceremony.

She was moved on a special non-vibrating vehicle typically used for semiconductor transportation, the facility added.

Zookeeper Kang Cheol-won, who is famous in the South for his bonding with Everland's pandas and is widely referred to as their "grandpa", read out a letter at the ceremony, the park said.

Kang is accompanying the panda on the journey to China until Fu Bao arrives at the country's Shenshuping Panda Base in Sichuan Province, Everland said.

"You will be forever (my) baby panda, even after 10 or 100 years. Thank you for coming to grandpa. I love you Fu Bao," Kang said in his letter, referring to himself as her grandpa.
