Celebrating 20 years in enriching guided family travel

When we launched Tauck Bridges in 2003, we had one goal in mind: to craft guided family-oriented trips that every age and generation would enjoy experiencing together. Shared enrichment is the watchword of our family brand and each of our trips is designed to show families the world differently than anyone else.

Unlike travel companies that offer separate programs and activities for kids and adults, our family guests experience the fun together, not apart. Each journey is led by a dedicated Tauck Director hand-picked for their experience with family travelers and for their passion and expertise in travel. They take care of all the day to day travel details of every trip, even tipping, so that families are free to experience the joys of travel without any of the work– or the worries.

Fully planned and all inclusive

With a knowledgeable Tauck Director leading the way, everyone can feel like a kid again. Enjoy activities designed for family fun and shared enrichment, as you experience the essence of the destinations you explore together.

Memorable Experiences

Imagine visiting the Louvre and the Sistine Chapel, after hours, without crowds. Or snorkeling with seals near tropical islands time forgot. You can ride gondolas, vintage Fiats, horses, and a special Ice Explorer; flightsee over an Alaska mountain and Lake Powell; and learn to waltz in a private Viennese palace. All included and all awesome to experience with your family.

Milestone Moments

From birthday, anniversary and graduation celebrations to family reunions for the whole clan, Tauck Bridges marks the occasion with unforgettable experiences and meaningful moments you'll long remember.

Closer Connections

Travel has a way of bringing the world closer, bridging generations and cultures like few experiences can. To foster connections with the people and places of the destinations your family will discover, you'll cook with chefs, saddle up with cowboys, meet schoolchildren in Peru and the Maasai in Tanzania, and more, sharing memories that last lifetimes.

7 Companies You Can Trust for Great Family Vacation Packages

Updated January 9, 2023

Planning a successful family vacation is work—but not if you let a packager do the work for you. Buying a vacation through a tour operator frees you from the tedious details of deciding where to stay, what to eat, when to visit each attraction, and how to get to each place. Travel packagers take care of all the logistics, and truly expert ones know their destinations deeply, so their inside knowledge may even be able to provide you with special perks. We like these seven tour operators’ family trips—they cover a variety of destinations, styles, group sizes, and prices, and they have proven themselves with families over the years.

Great Tour Companies for Family Vacation Packages: Austin Adventures

Austin Adventures keeps groups small: It aims for a 6:1 guest-to-guide ratio and vets those guides for charisma, making sure the leader has a personality kids will want to follow. Family groups explore Europe, New Zealand , Latin America, and North American national parks (a company specialty). Austin excels in outdoorsy outings such as horseback riding, glacier trekking, kayaking, and bicycling (always on trails, never on highways). The company strives to add excitement with what it calls unexpected “wow moments”—like the reward of ice cream and brownies served after a hike to the top of Angels Landing in Bryce National Park. Many trips follow a 6-day/5-night schedule plan, although international tours are longer. On departures for families with teens, expect more pedaling, paddling, and hiking to panoramic views, such as in the San Juan Islands , Yellowstone National Park , and the Kenai Fjords region.

Kids’ ages:  6–12 (Alaska: min. age 7); 13+ for family teen trips Group size: 12–18

Great Tour Companies for Family Vacation Packages: Tauck Bridges

Tauck , founded in 1925, launched Bridges in 2004 to cater to the family market through deeper cultural experiences. In Rome , visit the Sistine Chapel after hours without herds of tourists (pictured); in Cusco , Peru, make chocolate; and in London , zoom along the Thames in a speedboat. On Tauck’s increasingly popular European river boat family departures (the company owns its own vessels), visit multiple destinations but unpack only once. In port, you and your kids bike through the countryside, learn to make marzipan, and visit a Camargue ranch to meet cowboys and their legendary white horses. On board, kids fly kites, cook with the chef, and learn local phrases. For cruises, Tauck adds three guides and a family host to the ship’s standard staff. For land trips, one driver/escort leads.

Kids’ ages: 8–17 Group size: 40 (up to 130 on river cruises)

Great Tour Companies for Family Vacation Packages: R Family Vacations & Olivia Travel

Originally known as R Family Vacations and rebranded as KelliGregg Travel in 2022, this inclusive company gears trips toward LGBTQ+ travelers and their kids, friends, relatives, and allies. In addition to expanding its offerings for grown-ups, KelliGregg continues to organize its summer highlight under the R Family banner: a big cruise featuring show tunes, LGBTQ+ comedy acts, family dance parties, theater camp, outdoor adventures, and a lot more.

Kids’ ages: any age Group size: varies per trip type

Great Tour Companies for Family Vacation Packages: Thomson Family Adventures

There’s something special about having a friend in a foreign destination. Thomson Family Adventures creates that connection with Friends Across Borders, a digital pen pal initiative available for families who book many of its trips. Your kids correspond ahead of time with local children whom they then meet during the journey. In places with scarce internet and computer access, ground partners personally print and deliver messages. The goal is to immerse kids in the culture, whether it's through activities such as swimming with whale sharks in Baja , sailing in Ireland , or hiking in the Andes (pictured). Some trips cater to families with teens or multigenerational participants. On departures with more than eight people, a Rafiki (Swahili for friend) travels along to keep the kids engaged. Trips always have one driver and one guide.

Kids’ ages: 8–16 typically (some trips accept younger kids) Group size: 8–12

Great Tour Companies for Family Vacation Packages: Adventures by Disney

Among the more than 50 itineraries in over 40 countries visited by  Adventures by Disney , you can count on getting hands-on local experiences, guides with a gift for storytelling, and time built into the schedule for parents and kids to be both together and apart. You and your children might craft bento boxes at a Japanese cooking school, try archery at a Scottish estate, and learn hurling in Ireland. At other times, adults might sample wines at a vineyard in Tuscany while kids are taken to pick herbs for infusing olive oil. During adults-only dinner nights, kids grab a meal and watch a Disney movie. Daily activities are focused on local culture, not Disney characters—although you may expect a few surprise appearances from those along the way. Tours of Southern California grant private access to the Walt Disney Studios & Archives and Jim Henson Studios, which are normally closed to the public. In Europe, Disney partners with AmaWaterways for river cruises. Overall, many ABD trips are 8 days/7 nights, but the company also operates shorter Escapes that can be booked on their own or added to an itinerary.

Kids’ ages: 6+ (though kids as young as 4 may be allowed depending on the trip) Group size: 38–40

Great Tour Companies for Family Vacation Packages: Sierra Club Outings

The Sierra Club , one of the oldest U.S. conservation organizations, calls its trips “adventures for a cause.” By leading organized rafting, hiking, canoeing, and volunteering vacations for families, the Sierra Club connects kids to the outdoors, hoping to turn them into future protectors of the environment. Family excursions explore the United States: Wind down rivers in Utah, Oregon, and Idaho (pictured); or base your brood at an Adirondacks’ lodge for hiking, canoeing, swimming, and mountain biking. On service trips you might do things like clearing trails in the Tahoe National Forest or working with animals on a Pennsylvania farm. On Sierra Club Outings, the naturalist leaders are volunteers.

Kids’ ages: 6+, depending on the trip Group size: 12–15 (up to 24 for raft trips)

Great Tour Companies for Family Vacation Packages: National Geographic Journeys

National Geographic Family Journeys (in partnership with G Adventures) were launched in 2020 as a subset of Nat Geo's 300 or so vacations for a general audience. These family-specific itineraries are developed alongside experts such as scientists and researchers, who emphasize sustainability and supporting local culture. On these trips, you and your kids might taste-test noodles cooked by teens learning culinary arts in Hoi An, Vietnam (pictured); plant seedlings at a tree nursery in Costa Rica; or fashion your own Carnival mask in Venice . Pre-departure, parents receive field guides with advice on sparking children’s interest in the area, and kids get tips on photographic storytelling. Two “Chief Experience Officers” (aka enthusiastic guides) lead families through the 8- to 13-day itineraries in Vietnam, Cambodia, Iceland, France, Costa Rica, Peru, Alaska, and other adventurous places.

Kids’ ages: 7–17 Group size: 20

Book a Family Travel Expert For International Travel

When it comes to the best tour companies for families, you can find adventure trips that challenge you as well as tours geared towards every generation of your family! You don’t have to go to a kid-themed resort or stick to children’s activities.

Book a tour with a certified child expert so you can enjoy the thrill of an active vacation while having peace of mind that your child is safe and making memories. Or let your guide plan cultural experiences like cooking classes that both the grandparents and the grandkids will love!

Just keep an eye out for age limits when it comes to tour companies. Some have them and some don’t.

This also goes for transportation— some provide flights to and from home while some don’t. Make sure you’re getting the experience your family is looking for. But that shouldn’t be too hard to find with all the great options on this list!

7 Ski Resorts That Offer Off-Slope Fun

There are plenty of reasons to love family ski trips: they’re active, exciting, scenic, and often involve downing comfort food and cozying up to a fire. They can be fun for kids—and adults—of different ages. But what if you’re a non-skier, have an injury, or only like to be on the slopes for a morning or two? You can still enjoy the snow.

Why choose intrepid.

the family travel company

Just for families

The clue’s in the title. These trips are for families only (including any aunts, uncles or cousins who’d like to come along, of course). As long as you’re traveling with a child under the age of 18, you’re a family in our eyes. Plus, unlike other travel companies, children aged 17 years and younger receive a 10% discount on the price of their trip.

the family travel company

Travel with other families

Traveling the Intrepid way is a bit like traveling with a group of friends. These trips are made up of 3–5 like-minded families, and the kids tend to hit it off straight away, allowing you to enjoy some well-earned R&R. We often find the whole family ends up making friendships with people from all over the world, staying in touch long after the adventure ends.

the family travel company

Small group sizes

Intrepid’s family group sizes are small enough to avoid the crowds and reach some out-of-the-way places but big enough for a good social mix. Our average group size of 10 allows us to hop aboard local boats, buses or trains, eat at friendly, family-run restaurants and kick back in traditional accommodation and homestays.

the family travel company

Action packed

We know the biggest challenge on a family trip is keeping the kids entertained, so we’ve planned in advance. Nearly all of our hotels feature pools, and each day has a great mix of action-packed adventure and flexible free time. Your local leader can also suggest activities based on your kid’s hobbies or school curriculum.

the family travel company

Safety first

Our local leaders are specially trained to run family adventures, so you’ll be well taken care of. You can also rest easy knowing we conduct safety assessments on all our activities to meet local standards as well as our own comprehensive safety policy.

the family travel company

Sustainable travel

We strive to use travel as a force for good. That’s why we choose to give back to the communities we visit, carbon offset all our trips and take our social and environmental responsibilities seriously. We’ve been officially certified as the world’s largest travel B Corp, which means when you choose Intrepid Travel, you can rest assured you’re traveling to improve the planet.

Family favorites

The scaly face of an Iguana looking at the camera as it lies on a tree

Come for the biodiverse landscapes of Costa Rica and stay for the fascinating wildlife lurking in the country’s tropical wilderness. Spot three-toed sloths as they munch on their leafy food, listen out for the call of howler monkeys as they swing from tree to tree, and catch sight of a slow-moving iguana as it moves along the jungle floor – all within the extraordinary Manuel Antonio National Park.

Mother and tiger cub rest in Ranthambore National Park, Rajasthan

Rajasthan, India

With palaces, forts, festivals and wildlife encounters to take the breath away, Rajasthan in India is a must-see for all families. We stay in century-old heritage accommodation, living life like a Maharaja and Maharani. Trace the tracks of Bengal tigers in the jungle, wander through lush palace gardens, clock the famous Taj Mahal and ride the rails through the sun-kissed countryside.

Family tour through the streets of Essaouira

Essaouira, Morocco

An artists’ town through and through, Essaouira is full of surprises. First, there’s the beautiful blue-specked townscape, with its whitewashed seaside houses you could stare at for an age. Dig a little deeper and find galleries, boutiques, wood workshops and a colorful heritage of Portuguese, British, French and Jewish influences.

Colorful tradtional wear of the Maasai tribe in the Loita hills

Loita Hills, Kenya

Nestled in the Great Rift Valley, Loita Hills is a special place. It’s the town the Maasai call home, and it’s a privilege to spend time with such a proud and joyous people. Join in the famous Maasai jumping dance and remember to get a snap of the family leaping for the sky.

A brightly colored Citadel in Hue, Vietnam

Hue, Vietnam

Deep dive into Hue - a spectacular city with a royal past - on your family adventure through Vietnam. Whether you’re excited to travel the atmospheric streets on a cyclo tour, visit ancient pagodas built for religious figures, marvel at impressive citadels fit for royalty or join members of the community for a traditional paper flower-making class at a local non-government organization, there’s a little something for everyone in this cultural country.

A young girl holding up a piece of pizza in Italy with her mouth open

If there’s a destination fit for family travel, it’s Italy – think pizza and gelato making in Sorrento, scialatielli tasting (fresh pasta) in Minori, and history lessons about Mt Vesuvius while looking at the volcano itself. Packed with food and local artisan experiences, you and your kids will get a real taste of Italy while also getting the chance to appreciate the country’s breathtaking coastal scenery and learn about its captivating past.

Where we stay

We take a lot of care in choosing your accommodation and try to avoid the big chain hotels. Your accommodation could be a locally run hotel in Europe, a jungle lodge in Latin America, or a small, family-friendly hotel. No matter where you stay, it will be of good quality and most rooms will feature en suite bathrooms and air conditioning as standard. We also prefer hotels that provide triple or quad rooms and always try to offer adjoining rooms for parents and kids when they are available.

Responsible travel

A family of travelers gathers with a local at Ait Benhaddou in Morocco

Little travelers like to ask big questions. That’s where we come in. With so much for kids to learn about around the world – we believe in doing our bit to bring up the next generation of responsible travelers. This means educating the travel community about low-impact, sustainable travel practices and sharing ways in which we can all travel responsibly.

Best Tour Groups for Families

intrepid

Update : Some offers mentioned below are no longer available. View the current offers here .

Traveling with kids can sometimes make you insecure about your ability to manage grand-scale trips, whether you are a fearless adventurer who once backpacked across Europe during your college years or your travels are relegated to a few transcontinental business trips a year. Even the best of us can be intimidated by the logistics of bringing young kids and/or unimpressed teens on what is meant to be an adventure of a lifetime.

Just how does one manage to find all modes of transport between multiple destinations; the right attractions and activities to appease every family member, regardless of age; and hotels and restaurants that are kid-friendly -- on top of all the other pieces we need to put into place?

Adventures by Disney family group tours

Enter tour groups. Before you grumble that these are meant for an older set and are guaranteed to include more bus rides than activity time, we're here to inform you that family tour operators have really gotten it right with a great array of travel options, services and family fun.

To date, a Danube River cruise with Adventures by Disney is one of my family's favorite trips. The kids adored the Adventure Guides, who felt like part of the family before the cruise ended, and they met other children their age to play with during the nonactive periods along the river. Outings were included and set up by age groups. We had choices of what we wanted to do, and with multigenerational trips including kids as young as 6 up to grandparents, this 10-day adventure through various countries was enjoyable and, actually, a piece of cake. Disney did all of the heavy lifting!

Can I Use Miles to Pay for a Group Tour?

While tour companies aren't as connected to the miles world as hotel chains and airlines, there are ways to both earn and use miles to pay for a group tour. To apply points to a group tour, you'll want to dip into fixed-value miles from programs that allow you to "erase" a travel purchase from your credit card statement: Think Capital One miles that you earn with the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card, or Barclaycard Arrival miles that you earn with the Barclaycard Arrival Plus World Elite Mastercard.

In the case of Capital One, you can "wipe out" any travel-coded purchase that's hit your statement in the past 90 days. Redeem your miles at a fixed rate: 1 mile equals 1 penny. You can redeem for a partial credit but need to redeem at least 2,500 miles.

the family travel company

Barclaycard Arrival miles work in a similar fashion with 1 mile equaling 1 penny in redemption. You can erase any travel-coded purchase you've made in the last 120 days. The downside in this case is that you need to have all of the miles in your account to erase the entire charge; Barclaycard doesn't offer partial redemptions. But you will get 5% of your redeemed miles refunded, so that's a nice bonus after the fact.

If you don't have fixed-value miles to help reduce the cost of your group tour, make sure to use a credit card that rewards for travel purchases when you book. The Chase Sapphire Reserve, for example, offers 3x the points for every dollar you spend on travel (excluding $300 travel credit). Considering tours can be a bit pricey (you are paying for convenience, after all), you could easily earn enough points for a cheaper future getaway.

Family-Friendly Group Tour Companies

Looking for tour operators that cater to families? Here's a look at the companies TPG has its eye on. All tour prices are per person without airfare.

Adventures by Disney river cruise

Thomson Family Adventures

Since 1998, the Thomson family has offered small-group tours geared toward families like them who want to travel deeper by connecting to a country and its culture. Tours include a "Rafiki," or a friend, who will break the ice with the group and help keep things entertaining for the kids, while local expert guides show you around at a pace comfortable for everyone.

Thomson creates family itineraries that will take your brood back to ancient civilizations for tours that are not only family-friendly and fun but also educational. (Shh, the kids won't know they are learning on this vacation!) Trips are organized by activity level, so parents can select those best-suited to their children's needs. Multigenerational trips scheduled for 2019 can whisk your family off to exotic destinations like China, Egypt and Tanzania, as well as swings through the Caribbean and Europe.

Not only does your child get to explore faraway lands but he or she will also get to cultivate new friendships. Through the company's Friends Across Borders program, kids are paired with a child of similar age in the country you will be visiting so they can write to each other before and after the trip, and meet up at some point during your tour to potentially kick off a lifetime of friendship. We don't know of any other tour group that provides this.

Best Ages: 6 and up

Sample Starting Price: Thomson's popular seven-day Costa Rica Multi-Sport Adventure starts at $3,130 per person as of press time. On this trek, your clan will visit a sea turtle conservancy, learn to make chocolate and leave no stone unturned in Tortuguero National Park.

the family travel company

REI Adventures

The outdoor-lovers' go-to shop began uniting its customers with adventure tours more than 30 years ago, with many accommodations of the canvas tent or ecolodge variety. REI Adventures features 150 different trips across every continent (although the family junkets won't get you to Antarctica).

Family forays can be all-out exotic with rambles to Thailand and Machu Picchu , or within the national parks of the US, such as the Great Smoky Mountains or Zion and Bryce Canyon national park tours that will have the entire family enjoying the great outdoors. (Here are some tips for visiting national parks with kids.) You'll find three- and seven-day weekend getaway options, as well as seven- to 15-day adventures. REI has been committed to the environment since its founding in 1938. Every trek organized by the company practices green initiatives: using recyclable and reusable materials, minimizing environmental impact and following high ethical standards. The company also works in conjunction with host countries by offering meaningful cultural exchanges and patronizing local businesses.

Best Ages: Due to the tours' physical activities, REI Adventures is best-suited for active teens who can keep up with the hiking, kayaking, river rafting and biking that are often at the forefront of the tours.

Sample Starting Price: A three-day hiking weekend is $1,599 per person (with REI member discounts bringing the price down to $1,449), while a 10-day Thailand trip starts at $3,309 ($2,999 for members).

Points Perks: REI loyalty begins with $20 for a lifetime membership. As a member, you'll get discounted tours, as well as discounted classes, events, services and merchandise at REI locations around the world. Sign up for the REI Co-op World Mastercard and you'll get an additional 5% back on purchases at REI, as well as 1% back on everyday purchases with no annual fee. Plus, every purchase means a donation to the National Forest Foundation.

the family travel company

Intrepid Travel

By pairing three to five families with like-minded individuals, especially matching children of similar interests and ages, Intrepid Travel works to create lasting friendships along with its tours. Keeping the groups to no more than 10 people means more focus on you, and kids 17 and younger receive 10% off trip prices.

Family voyages are uber-exotic with Intrepid. You can explore the desert landscape of Morocco, the African valleys of Kenya and the opulent palaces of India. Any one of the action-packed journeys will combine activities that coincide with your child's school curriculum or hobbies.

Intrepid doesn't just show you the world, it gives back as well. Through the nonprofit Intrepid Foundation, funds have been distributed to support local and grassroots projects, including sustainable development, environmental conservation and wildlife protection.

Best Ages: Age minimums vary but start at 5 and up, depending on the location. Most children on these trips fall between 8 and 18 years of age.

Sample Starting Price: Imagine Morocco with the kiddos for eight days starting as low as $675 per person, not including airfare. Cross wind-swept dunes, ride a camel in the desert and get lost in the alleyways of bustling markets. (Single parents will love Intrepid, as well, because of its solo parent options with other solo moms and dads.)

Points Perks: Intrepid has its own loyalty program: After nine trips, you'll earn $1,800 toward a 10th tour when you become an Intrepid Legend.

the family travel company

Adventures By Disney

If you think creating "The Happiest Place on Earth" is all Disney can do, you haven't tried Adventures by Disney, the high-end, "we take care of everything" family travel company. You'll pay a pretty penny to join these tours, offered since 2005, but your entire family is guaranteed to have a blast with tours that include Disney-trained local guides who stay with you for the entire journey.

Immersing your family into the cultures you visit, ABD (as it is known by its fans) offers more than 30 adventures across six continents. Go deep into China with a visit to the Forbidden City, Shanghai, Beijing and Hong Kong, or traverse across Australia, from the Great Barrier Reef to Ayers Rock to the Gold Coast to Sydney. (Here are the best ways to use points and miles to fly from the US to Australia .) Disney goes big when it creates its cruising adventures and has partnered with AMAWaterways for ABD cruises throughout Europe. Trips range from three-day weekends to two-week adventures.

With backstage, one-of-a-kind tours, you'll skip lines and do things you wouldn't do on other tours like visit the Good Morning America studios in New York City or take an after-hours tour of the Vatican Museum and Sistine Chapel in Rome. From the moment you step off the plane, you'll have Adventure Guides with you so you feel like a VIP from start to finish.

Adventures by Disney

Best Ages: Minimum ages start at 4 or 6 years of age, depending on the destination.

Sample Starting Price: Disney's tours are so great that its pricing falls under the "if you have to ask" category. They are expensive. A 12-day/11-night tour of China starts at $8,949 per person while a four-day/three-night tour of New York City starts at $2,929 per person.

Points Perks: The Chase Disney Visa returns 1–2% back in the form of Disney dollars, which can be used on Adventures by Disney tours. Or, put your ABD vacay on your Disney card, and use your rewards for a future Disney outing.

Lindblad Expeditions

Launched in Sweden by the explorer Lars-Eric Lindblad, the Lindblad family combines a National Geographic partnership with highly engaging expeditions that kids not only learn from but also will enjoy. With this program, certified field educators serve as tour directors and guides, helping your children connect with nature

Family and multigenerational expeditions make it easy for ages 8 to 80 to enjoy explorative travel together, all aboard adventurous small ship cruises that allow you to get up close to the wildlife of the Galapagos, Alaska, the Amazon River basin and even Antarctica. Kids under 18 get $500 off, and specials often include free airfare for everyone and bar tabs for parents. (Yes, it's a family affair, but it doesn't deprive parents on the journey.)

Best Ages: All trips designated Family Travel do not have any age minimums, although these explorations often require children to be old enough to handle active adventures.

Sample Starting Price: Spend 10 days touring the Galapagos starting at $7,290. 2019 is the 50th year Lindblad has been conducting expedition cruises to the land of Darwin, where kids will encounter giant tortoises and sea lions.

the family travel company

Tauck Bridges

Tauck has provided tours around the world for more than 90 years, but it is the Bridges arm of the company that was developed specifically for families, with tour directors who love kids and aim to please.

Tauck Bridges offers 20 different family experiences to choose from in 2019 and 2020. You'll find river cruises down the Danube, rafts through the Grand Canyon, wildlife safaris in Tanzania or horseback riding in America's cowboy country, and everything in between, including trips to Europe's most charming cities.

Tauck's commitment to the environment extends to its partnerships with esteemed National Geographic filmmaker Ken Burns on its Ken Burns American Journeys, while Earth Journeys is a partnership with BBC Earth.

Best Ages: Children must be a minimum of 4 years old for river cruises, 5 years old for safaris and 6 years old for its Galapagos cruise.

Sample Starting Price: Cross the border to the Canadian Rockies for a seven-day tour through Western Canada's famed national parks, Banff and Jasper. Your family will ride the river rapids, climb glaciers and hike in the beautiful hills starting at $3,640 per person.

Bottom Line

Let someone else do all of the planning and work so you can truly enjoy a vacation by taking a group tour that was specifically designed for families. The best way to lessen the cost of a big trip like this is by using your miles to get your family to the tour's embarkation point, and then focus on fixed-value points that can help "erase" all or part of the tour cost.

The Roaming Family

The best family travel company out there

by Melissa | Nov 15, 2017 | Luxury travel , Tips , Travel Advising , Traveling with Kids | 0 comments

The best family travel company out there

There are no shortage of tour and travel companies out there. Some are good, some are bad. Many families don’t even think about booking through a tour company and stick to the basics – Disney, a California beach. Maybe the Grand Canyon. But anyone who follows our blog knows that we’re all about experiencing the world and bringing our kids along for the ride! For people like us, a thoughtful, well planned itinerary is essential for seeing the world. The phrase “collect memories, not things” describes us to a T. And that’s why we were thrilled to find the best family travel company out there – Global Community .

family-travel-company

Get ready for me to talk about Global Community often over the coming months because….well….it’s awesome. Coming from the standpoint of a mom, I’m excited that there is something in the travel space that is dedicated towards families. From the standpoint of a travel advisor, I’m thrilled that there is something out there specializing in helping families see the world and work hand in hand with travel advisors to give clients the best possible experience. Travel advising is on the rise and Global Community recognizes that.

The concept was developed by two friends – Keith Waldon and Christie Holmes. Both are not only brilliant at branding, but they are also parents and seasoned travelers. Keith has spent his entire career in the travel industry. Growing up in a small Texas town is what fueled Keith’s desire for travel. He saw first hand what happens when children are completely insulated and never shown other places – including racism, and assumptions and fear of other cultures. Christie’s foray into travel was a part of her childhood and she learned at a young age that she had a desire to experience other cultures. Recognizing that a proper family travel company really didn’t exist in the travel industry, they came up with the concept and spent a LOT of time developing itineraries for all over the world – including itineraries for families with young children (under 12) and families with teens, as well as adults only programs.

family-travel-company

Why did Christie and Keith develop this idea? Because they want to raise what they call “global citizens”. The motivation for booking any trip with Global Community is to experience a purposeful itinerary, filled with cultural experiences that help your children (and yourselves) immerse themselves in a different world. And to grow to appreciate the beauty and differences of the world around us. At the same time, the itineraries recognize that every moment traveling with young children can’t be a teaching moment and hotels and tours are very child friendly. From the moment you book a trip, Global Community works with your family to share details about the trip and culture with child friendly tools…..young children will receive a handmade doll and storybook, talking about the destination. Teens will receive social media applications to help them share their excitement. And the best part? Whole Planet Foundation, the Whole Foods Market foundation which funds poverty alleviation around the world has partnered with them to develop destination specific recipes and shopping lists. All in an effort to bring awareness to other cultures and get a family excited for their upcoming trip.

family-travel-company

Wondering where a family travel company such as this plans itineraries? Here’s a short list:

  • Yellowstone and Teton national parks

family-travel-company

That’s just a short list. They are have a ton more and are developing new ones all the time. Global Community is truly designed to help you see the world with your children and guide you every step of the way to have the best possibly experience. I’ll be going into more details regarding Global Community, including more of their itineraries and destinations and their unique long term planning options, in the coming months. If you would like help developing a short or long term plan, I can help. Contact me here for more details on how to plan the perfect trip. 🙂

For those truly epic, once-in-a-lifetime destinations, you want to leave your itinerary to the experts. Whether your dream is to see the Big Five on an African Safari, trek tall mountains, explore European cities, or something even wilder, a group tour is the easiest way to do it.

However, picking the wrong group tour company is the quickest way to ruin your trip. Make sure you choose a tour company that aligns with your goals and travel styles. Do you want an intimate group tour or do you prefer to make lots of new friends in a big group? Does the price line up with what you like (luxury vs. budget)? Is the itinerary going to all the places you want to see?

We’ve done the research and found the very best group travel tour companies for 2023 for every type of traveler.

Best Overall Group Travel: Exodus Travels

Images of nature around the mountains and lakes of Slovenia as seen on the Exodus Travels' Lakes and Mountains of Slovenia walking tour

With trips on every continent, Exodus Travels covers anywhere on this planet that you could possibly want to go, from popular destinations like the Amalfi Coast to well off-the-beaten path adventures like Tajikistan. This award-winning group travel company boasts thousands of repeat customers who sign up for trips year after year (97% of past participants would recommend Exodus Travels to a friend).

These small group tours operate with only around 12-16 people, and always feature experienced local leaders who can give you a unique insight into your destination. Exodus Travels caters to any type of travel style, including trips broken down by type of activity (think walking, cycling, multi-adventure, winter, or cultural) as well as type of traveler (family, age group, etc.). There are curated collections (coastal, “away from it all”, European wilderness, and trips of a lifetime) to inspire you, as well as self-guided options for when you want all the benefits of a group tour planner without the actual group. Looking for that special safari? Exodus Travels just partners with the African Wildlife Foundation to create carefully curated luxury adventures that go above and beyond the standard safari.

Exodus Travels tours work for almost any budget, with options that range from affordable to premium.

Top Trip: Explore under-the-radar Europe by foot on Exodus Travels’ Lakes & Mountains of Slovenia walking tour .

A Taste of the Sweet Life in Slovenia

Best Adventure Group Travel: World Expeditions

Groups of hikers walking and camping around the mountains of Kilimanjaro with World Expeditions

World Expeditions has been taking adventurous travelers to remote locations all over the world ever since its first group trek through Nepal in 1975. Today, World Expeditions offers active itineraries on every continent. Intrepid travelers can opt for trips themed around mountaineering, rafting, cycling, hiking, and more.

World Expeditions aims to leave communities and places where they operate tours better than they found them. Trips are created using the company’s Thoughtful Travel Charter as a guideline, which emphasizes respect for the environment, sustainability, having a positive impact on local communities, protecting wildlife, and more.

World Expeditions’ trips are capped at just 16 people to provide a good experience for participants, and there are no single supplements for solo travelers willing to share a room with someone of the same gender.

Top Trip: Summit Africa’s tallest mountain on a fully-supported trek up Kilimanjaro on World Expeditions’ eight day trip up the beautiful Lemosho Route .

Best Budget Group Travel: G Adventures

People visiting famous sites around China with the G Adventures' China Express group travel tour

For travelers on a budget, G Adventures offers cheap group tours that make dream destinations accessible to nearly anyone. (Think: sailing the Galapagos for just $1,124 , criss-crossing India’s Golden Triangle for $559 , or spending 8 days in Bali for less than $800.)

G Adventures is one of the best tour companies for solo travelers as well, as most trips don’t have a single-supplement. You can choose to share a room with another G Adventures solo traveler, or pay extra to have your own space.

G Adventures keeps costs down by opting for cheaper hotels and local meals, and making certain activities optional (for an additional cost). Pick your travel style—options range from “basic” to more luxe tours run in partnership with National Geographic. Family tours, local living tours (featuring homestays), and wellness-focused tours are also available.

Top Trip: G Adventures’ China Express trip is a great way to see the highlights of China if you’re short on both time and budget.

Best family travel agencies to take the stress out of planning and booking a holiday with kids

Booking with a travel agency means peace of mind, expert knowledge and no nasty surprises. We’ve rounded up the best travel companies for families, according to Mumsnetters.

By Poppy O'Neill | Last updated Dec 20, 2023

Best family travel agencies

Package holidays booked via a travel agency might seem old fashioned, but if you've ever had to deal with cancelled flights, companies going bust and holidays ruined, the security that travel agents can offer is a big draw, especially for families.

If you’re looking for a fun-packed, relaxing trip abroad, a family travel agency can take care of your itinerary, flights, connections and any complex requirements, so you can relax and look forward to your holiday. Plus, holidays booked through a travel agent are fully insured and ATOL protected - so if something goes wrong, you’ll be taken care of and won’t lose money.

From one-of-a-kind trips to all-inclusive beach breaks, Mumsnetters are on hand with recommendations for family travel agents that deliver great service and an unforgettable holiday.

What are the best travel agencies for families?

Best for bespoke family breaks: Take the Family

Best for beach breaks: Jet2holidays

Best for luxury family trips: Scott Dunn

Best for family adventures: Explore

Best for long-haul family escapes: Kuoni

1. Jet2holidays

Jet2holidays | Book a family holiday

"We’re going on a package holiday this year for the first time in ages. Last time we went abroad, our return flight was cancelled and it cost a small fortune to sort out and basically spoiled the whole holiday. If a flight gets cancelled this time I want someone else to sort it all out. With Jet2 it’s mega flexible, for many destinations you can leave and come back any day" - recommended by Mumsnet user,   Frazzled2207

Specialising in fly-and-flop beach holidays, Jet2holidays take care of everything from airport to sunlounger. With an emphasis on value, they offer all-inclusive holidays in popular resorts across Europe. Tailored for families, there are a range of single parent packages and discounts available and millions of free child places too. Jet2holidays offer a refund guarantee, low £60 deposits, comprehensive insurance and the option to spread payments interest-free.

2. Take the Family

Take the Family | Book a family holiday

Take the Family is a travel agency designed with families in mind, offering luxury breaks , beach holidays, ski trips , safari holidays and adventure trips across the globe. The experts on family holidays of all kinds, Take the Family will help you find the perfect getaway with their comprehensive knowledge of the travel industry. The website is a one-stop shop for family-friendly travel, directing you to holidays with specialist and big-name providers.

As an added incentive, Take the Family is offering Mumsnet users a £5 John Lewis voucher (for every £1000 of holiday value). Speak to a family travel expert to get a  bespoke holiday quote.

Kuoni | Book a family holiday

"I normally do DIY but have used Kuoni before and they are excellent. They can put you in touch with staff who have actually visited where you want to go" - recommended by Mumsnet user,   MrsMaiselsMuff

Kuoni offers a luxury, bespoke service with amazing attention to detail. They’ll help you create the perfect family holiday with insider knowledge and a face-to-face contact at their nationwide stores. Kuoni covers Europe, the Far East, Indian Ocean, Africa and the Caribbean and will help you plan a unique itinerary tailored to your family’s needs. Kuoni staff really know their stuff, and the company makes sure they can provide expert advice on every holiday they offer. Holidays booked through Kuoni are ATOL protected, and they stick to the ABTA code of conduct , meaning you’re supported both at home and abroad.

Explore | Book a family holiday

"Just got back from a family adventure to Egypt. Had a fab time... The country was a real surprise with amazing experiences. Booked through Explore and would recommend" - recommended by Mumsnet user, breward

Explore offers a great range of adventure holidays geared towards families. If you’re looking to take the kids beyond the more mainstream holiday destinations, booking a trip with Explore is a good move. Explore’s package trips are all graded from “Relaxed” to “Full on”, so there’s something for all tastes and energy levels. They specialise in small group holidays, so you’ll be teamed up with other families of about 12-18 people and an expert tour leader. They’re also great at single parent family holidays - their small group trips are a great way to get away with the kids with some like-minded adult company included.

5. Exodus Travels

Exodus Travels | Book a family holiday

"We went with Exodus on their jungle and beaches holiday to Thailand last summer. It was our best holiday by a mile. We had an 11 and 9 year old. The other children ensured they had company of their own age and the guide was brilliant. We were able to go off the beaten track and her local knowledge was invaluable. We never felt rushed and just had a great time. I would certainly use the company again" - recommended by Mumsnet user, breward

If you’re looking for a holiday that’s off the beaten track and want the added assurance of a knowledgeable travel agent, Exodus is a great choice. Their unique holidays are designed with an emphasis on fun, adventure and experiencing local culture. Whether you’re meeting orangutans in Borneo or touring Hanoi in a bicycle taxi, Exodus creates the kind of holidays the whole family will remember forever. The range of family holidays features age ratings, so you can be sure you’re not signing up for something that’ll be too much for younger children, although they don’t currently recommend any of their holidays for under 8s.

6. Intrepid Travel

Intrepid Travel | Book a family holiday

"I would recommend Intrepid Tours - some family trips are single parent groups and some mixed - I went to Turkey last year with them on a family tour (mixed group - some single parents some couples) and it was fantastic. Everyone really bonded and kids and adults all had a great time" - recommended by Mumsnet user,   imablackstarnotapopstar

Intrepid is another travel agency offering adventurous holidays tailored for families. Any group with children under 18 is classed as a family, and there’s a 10% discount for everybody in the group aged 17 and under. They’ll match you with 3-5 other families, so there’s adult company and new playmates for the kids built in. Intrepid make sure there’s never a dull moment, and you can expect to stay somewhere with a pool and have activities planned every day. Bestsellers in their family range include Peru, India and Kenya, with an emphasis on local culture and getting off the beaten track.

7. TUI Holidays

TUI Holidays | Book a family holiday

"We’re leaving today from a TUI holiday. We used them at Christmas for skiing as well. Main reasons were easy refund or reschedule if covid had an impact which is a thing for our destinations. However for ‘travelling’ which we see as going between cities, backpacks out etc we often book independently. It was a nice change using a package and having everything sorted rather than our usual backpacking type holiday" - recommended by Mumsnet user,   RedRum27

Formerly Thomson Holidays, TUI has been in the package holiday business for donkey’s years. They’re best known for beach holidays, but also offer tours, city breaks, skiing and Disney holidays. You can be sure everything will be kid-friendly on a family holiday booked through TUI - with children’s menus, entertainment and kids’ clubs, plus free child places available for lots of destinations. Opt for an all-inclusive getaway and you can be sure everything is taken care of and paid for in advance, so you can kick back and relax.

8. Scott Dunn

Scott Dunn | Book a family holiday

"If you can afford it you could do a holiday that offers a nursery or nanny service like a Scott Dunn - useful if your little one is already at nursery back at home. We went to Crete in June with Scott Dunn and they were absolutely brilliant, could drop off and pick up DD (then 14m) from their crèche throughout the day. She had a blast doing all the fun activities she does at nursery and I was less stressed with her being out of the sun. We still had quality time with her but also had a lovely relaxing time when she was being looked after (I actually had time to read a book!)" - recommended by Mumsnet user,   BridgetJonesDaiquiri

Scott Dunn know that, for parents, a holiday without kid-free time isn’t really a holiday. Their Explorers kids’ club for children aged 4 months to 11+ years operates from luxury family-friendly resorts in the Mediterranean, French Alps and Indian Ocean. The kids’ club will help you strike the balance between quality time together with your kids, and uninterrupted luxury for you. They also offer family-friendly safaris, activity holidays and tailor-made family reunions for multi-generational families spread across the globe.

9. British Airways Holidays

British Airways Holidays | Book a family holiday

"BA and on the beach were great with our holidays, BA refunded within 4 days of cancelling the holiday, on the beach refunded the hotel within a couple of days, flight refund took i think 6 weeks as they had to wait for the money from Easyjet. I didn't need to do anything either time, the companies processed everything automatically when it was clear we couldn't travel. Would happily use both again" - recommended by Mumsnet user,   ineedaholidayandwine

More than just an airline, BA offers ATOL-protected package deals with low deposits and a refund guarantee. With expert advice available on all destinations, they offer family-oriented beach getaways, city breaks, Disney World escapes and lesser-known European resorts. BA is selective about the hotels included in the packages, and you can be sure all details are taken care of - from on-site creches to extra activities, and from keeping teens happy to accommodation suitable for multi-generational families.

10. Audley Travel

Audley Travel | Book a family holiday

"We have always had a personalised service from Audley on a bespoke tour. I’m not sure how another company can do more? Everything is arranged for you" - recommended by Mumsnet user, TizerorFizz

Audley offers a tailored service so together with one of their expert concierges, you can build the perfect holiday of a lifetime for your family. With destinations and activity holidays for every age group and all interests, there’s everything from a 4x4 adventure in Oman to baby-friendly safaris in South Africa. Audley aims to give real insight into the countries you visit with them, utilising local knowledge and expert advice to make your one-of-a-kind holiday really special.

Is it always better to book through a travel agency?

It’s often more expensive to book through a travel agency, although their expert knowledge means great deals are available. However, the peace of mind an ATOL protected holiday brings is hard to put a price on, especially following the past few years of chaotic travel restrictions.

ATOL is a financial protection scheme that covers package holidays, and it means customers will be protected in the event of cancelled flights or travel companies going bust.

Most travel agencies abide by the ABTA code of conduct , which means you’ll be looked after if something disrupts your holiday plans - like building works at your destination or significant flight delays.

ATOL and ABTA don’t cover things like medical care, so it’s always best to get travel insurance , however you book your holiday.

Which is the best country to travel to with a family?

Mumsnetters say France is the best holiday destination for travelling with family . Drive over via ferry or Eurotunnel, jet down to the south of France for Mediterranean sun or make the kids’ dreams come true with a trip to Disneyland Paris - France has it all.

What’s the best family travel agency?

According to Mumsnetters, the best family travel agency is Jet2holidays . They offer outstanding value, combining budget-friendly package holidays with the protection you’d expect from a travel agency with 20 years’ experience. We're also impressed by Kuoni’s bespoke expert service, and Take the Family’s dedication to family-friendly adventures.

How we chose our recommendations

To help us create this list of tried and tested family-friendly travel agencies, we first searched our Mumsnet forums for trusted recommendations from parents themselves. We listened to the experts on what families want to provide a successful trip for everyone to enjoy, and weighed up a variety of considerations such as location, accessibility and budgets.

Our research allowed us to round up the best family travel companies that Mumsnetters rate to help you plan your next holiday.

<p> If you are new to the idea of traveling with children, Dubrow suggests you start small. Take your family on a smaller, local day trip and test drive your tips and hacks while being close enough to home to pull the trigger and abort the mission if necessary. Don't become discouraged if your first few local expeditions are a flop. Reflect on what worked and what didn't, make adjustments and try it again! A few trips to nearby locales will help build your confidence so you can easily transition into bigger getaways soon enough. <p> There are plenty of ways to cut corners and save a dollar during travel, but if you are vacationing with several children or young children, your lodging accommodations should not be one of them. <p> Another tip Dubrow emphasizes to parents taking the travel plunge is to adjust the travel pace to best suit their children. Kids find joy in the most minor of details, so allow them to experience these travel days at their leisure. You might be used to packing in eight to ten hours of sights in a big city, but should you try to apply the vacationing pace of yesteryear to travel with kids, you are likely going to fizzle out fast. Dubrow elaborates, "Avoid trying to go at the same pace you did before you had children. Slow down and give your baby or toddler time to enjoy things at their level. They might be looking at the marble floors in the Vatican instead of the arches and artwork, and that is OK." </p> <p> Decide beforehand what you really want to do with the kids. Think about if it will be of interest to them and if they will be able to make it through whatever it is you are hoping to do on vacation. Build in plenty of snack breaks or a mid-day siesta or rest period, so children don't become overly tired, cranky, and downright miserable. Pack your patience-pants, as this new, slower pace of seeing the world might be a bit of an adjustment for you. </p>

<p> Throughout her journeys, Dubrow discovered the power of snacks. Snacks can pretty much fix anything at a moment's notice, and you don't want to be without them. Pack items that are easy to eat while on the go and make sure they aren't loaded with sugar. Choose grain or protein-based items to give kids energy without the dreaded sugar crash looming ahead. She also reminds parents that airplanes no longer provide the delectables of days past. Small snacks and beverages are typically offered, but if you have picky eaters or children with specific dietary needs, pack plenty of your own nibbles for a lengthy flight. </p>

<p> When it comes to vacation, you want to think about lounging around a pool or hiking through breathtaking forests... not about losing track of your kid! Not being able to locate your child is every parent's worst nightmare, and while it is something you don't even want to contemplate, it is best to have a plan in place for this type of emergency. Sit your kids down and discuss the plan for if someone becomes lost or strays from the group during travel. Older kids should have the means to contact parents, or at the very least know their parents' phone numbers. Write parents' names, kids' names, and contact numbers inside a shoe for little children. Be sure everyone understands how to get help in the event that they find themselves alone in a foreign space. </p>

<p> Imagine being stuffed in a small airplane with a crying child who is bored to tears or covered head to toe in apple juice (or worse) and still having several hours of air travel to go. Be Prepared for Every Eventuality When Flying With Kids

Imagine being stuffed in a small airplane with a crying child who is bored to tears or covered head to toe in apple juice (or worse) and still having several hours of air travel to go. That's the stuff nightmares are made of, and a bit of thought and preparation in this department can make all the difference. Aside from packing drinks and snacks on a flight, be sure to pack several entertainment options for kids. Great ideas are:

  • Coloring books and crayons
  • Electronic devices
  • Games galore - both word games and paper games
  • Downloaded movies and shows
  • Comfort toys

Aside from entertainment options, you will want to pack a change of clothes in your carry-on. The only thing worse than having a kid get sick or have an accident while flying the friendly skies is having nothing to change them into. Toss the following into your carry-on so you are never left high and dry (or rather high and soaking wet).

  • Extra undies, pants, and shirt
  • Lots of disinfectant wipes and a small towel
  • Pajamas if you are traveling long distances through the night
  • A plastic, sealable bag for soiled clothing
  • Remember to pack a first aid kit and a car seat for plane and car travel

<p> Packing for a fun family trip comes with a bit of a learning curve unless you know how to do it properly right out of the gate! Parents tend to pack in one of two ways: overpacking and underpacking. They either take along everything they can think of and then curse themselves throughout the entire trip for spending more time acting as a family pack mule than enjoying a well-deserved vacation, or they bring next to nothing and spend more time scouring the earth for those forgotten necessities than they do relaxing. </p> <p> You want to strike a packing balance. Try making a list of things you need several weeks before you depart. Next, revisit your list and remove items you think you can live without. Add a few new items that you skipped over the first time around. Consider what items your accommodations might have readily available. Many rental spaces have cribs, cots, and even high chairs for families to borrow, meaning you don't have to lug that stuff with you. If your accommodations have easily accessible laundry facilities, then pack half the clothes you originally planned on taking and spend a few hours mid-vacation doing laundry (maybe while the tots take an afternoon nap). </p>

It is much harder to rush through a busy airport to catch a connecting flight with three kids, two strollers, and several carry-on bags in hand. </p>

Kids thrive on the routines you have created for them. They help keep them safe and healthy. While plenty of routine aspects will shift during travel, keep the ones you can in place. The Key Bridge was named after the national anthem’s author.

A view of Francis Scott Key Bridge as a ship carrying four giant shipping cranes passes underneath.

The Francis Scott Key Bridge, which collapsed after being struck by a cargo ship early Tuesday, was named after the American lawyer who wrote the lyrics of the national anthem. Construction of the bridge started in 1972 and was completed in March 1977.

Plans for the bridge began in the early 1970s, after traffic inundated the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel, through which Interstate 895 crosses the harbor. When the bridge opened, The New York Times reported that construction costs had totaled $141 million, which is roughly $735 million in today’s dollars.

More than 12.4 million passenger and commercial vehicles crossed the bridge in 2023, according to a Maryland state government report .

The bridge itself spans 1.6 miles over the Patapsco River, but the crossing’s overall structure, including its connecting approaches, is almost 11 miles long. As part of Interstate 695, it is the outermost of three major crossings of the Baltimore Harbor.

Francis Scott Key was believed to be near the site of the future bridge in 1814 when he observed the British bombardment of Fort McHenry, where he served as quartermaster, during the War of 1812. The battle inspired Mr. Key to write a poem called “The Defense of Fort M’Henry” that would later be set to the music of a popular British tune and renamed “The Star-Spangled Banner.” It became the national anthem in 1931.

After the bridge opened to the public, parts of it underwent renovation several times, including a $14 million project in 1986 to repair damage, improve safety and restore the bridge’s appearance.

What we know about the container ship that crashed into the Baltimore bridge

  • The ship that crashed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge on Tuesday was the Singapore-flagged Dali.
  • The container ship had been chartered by Maersk, the Danish shipping company.
  • Two people were recovered from the water but six remain missing, authorities said.

Insider Today

A container ship crashed into a major bridge in Baltimore early Tuesday, causing its collapse into the Patapsco River.

A livestream showed vehicles traveling on the Francis Scott Key Bridge just moments before the impact at 1:28 a.m. ET.

Baltimore first responders called the situation a "developing mass casualty event" and a "dire emergency," per The Associated Press.

James Wallace, chief of the Baltimore Fire Department, said in a press conference that two people had been recovered from the water.

One was uninjured, but the other was transported to a local trauma center in a "very serious condition."

Wallace said up to 20 people were thought to have fallen into the river and some six people were still missing.

Richard Worley, Baltimore's police chief, said there was "no indication" the collision was purposeful or an act of terrorism.

Wes Moore, the governor of Maryland, declared a state of emergency around 6 a.m. ET. He said his office was in close communication with Pete Buttigieg, the transportation secretary.

"We are working with an interagency team to quickly deploy federal resources from the Biden Administration," Moore added.

Understanding why the bridge collapsed could have implications for safety, in both the shipping and civil engineering sectors.

The container ship is the Singapore-flagged Dali, which is about 984 feet long, and 157 feet wide, per a listing on VesselFinder.

An unclassified Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency report said that the ship "lost propulsion" as it was leaving port, ABC News reported.

The crew notified officials that they had lost control and warned of a possible collision, the report said, per the outlet.

The Dali's owner is listed as Grace Ocean, a Singapore-based firm, and its manager is listed as Synergy Marine, which is also headquartered in Singapore.

Shipping news outlet TradeWinds reported that Grace Ocean confirmed the Dali was involved in the collapse, but is still determining what caused the crash.

Related stories

Staff for Grace Ocean declined to comment on the collision when contacted by Business Insider.

"All crew members, including the two pilots have been accounted for and there are no reports of any injuries. There has also been no pollution," Synergy Marine said in a statement.

The company did not respond to a request for further comment from BI.

'Horrified'

Maersk chartered the Dali, with a schedule for the ship on its website.

"We are horrified by what has happened in Baltimore, and our thoughts are with all of those affected," the Danish shipping company said in a statement.

Maersk added: "We are closely following the investigations conducted by authorities and Synergy, and we will do our utmost to keep our customers informed."

Per ship tracking data, the Dali left Baltimore on its way to Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka, at around 1 a.m., about half an hour before the crash.

The Port of Baltimore is thought to be the largest in the US for roll-on/roll-off ships carrying trucks and trailers.

Barbara Rossi, associate professor of engineering science at the University of Oxford, told BI the force of the impact on one of the bridge's supporting structures "must have been immense" to lead to the collapse.

Dr Salvatore Mercogliano, a shipping analyst and maritime historian at Campbell University, told BI: "It appears Dali left the channel while outbound. She would have been under the control of the ship's master with a Chesapeake Bay pilot onboard to advise the master.

"The deviation out of the channel is probably due to a mechanical issue as the ship had just departed the port, but you cannot rule out human error as that was the cause of the Ever Forward in 2022 just outside of Baltimore."

He was referring to the incident two years ago when the container ship became grounded for a month in Chesapeake Bay after loading up cargo at the Port of Baltimore.

The US Coast Guard found the incident was caused by pilot error, cellphone use, and "inadequate bridge resource management."

Claudia Norrgren, from the maritime research firm Veson Nautical, told BI: "The industry bodies who are here to protect against incidents like this, such as the vessel's flag state, classification society, and regulatory bodies, will step in and conduct a formal investigation into the incident. Until then, it'll be very hard for anyone to truly know what happened on board."

This may not have been the first time the Dali hit a structure.

In 2016, maritime blogs such as Shipwreck Log and ship-tracking site VesselFinder posted videos of what appears to be the stern of the same, blue-hulled container vessel scraping against a quay in Antwerp.

A representative for the Port of Antwerp told BI the Dali did collide with a quay there eight years ago but couldn't "give any information about the cause of the accident."

The Dali is listed as being built in 2015 by Hyundai Heavy Industries in South Korea.

UPS to become the primary air cargo provider for the United States Postal Service

FILE - A delivery vehicle passes by a UPS depot, Thursday, June 29, 2023, in New York. UPS has...

NEW YORK (AP) — UPS will become the primary air cargo provider for the United States Postal Service.

The Atlanta shipping company said Monday that it had received an air cargo contract from the U.S. Postal Service that significantly expands an existing partnership between the two.

UPS will move the majority of air cargo in the U.S. for the postal service following a transition period, according to UPS.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

USPS’s current air cargo contract with FedEx Corp. is set to expire in late September. The agency said in a statement that its contract with UPS will be for a minimum of five and a half years.

FedEx said in a regulatory filing that it wasn’t able to reach an agreement on mutually beneficial terms to extend its contract with USPS. The company said that negotiations ended on Friday, after extensive talks.

FedEx Express will continue to provide air transportation services domestically and to Puerto Rico until the contract expires on Sept. 29. UPS’s contract with USPS takes effect the next day.

During FedEx’s third-quarter conference call on March 21, Chief Customer Officer Brie Carere said that the company had provided its services to USPS for more than two decades and that the two sides were still in negotiations.

USPS announced a four year extension of its air cargo network contract with FedEx in 2020. The mail and delivery service said that the contract provided for domestic air transportation for U.S. Mail, Priority Mail and Priority Mail Express.

In recent years USPS has focused increasingly on lowering costs, and avenue is through transitioning from air freight to ground transportation. In February USPS Postmaster General Louis DeJoy said that USPS is looking to reduce its overall transportation costs by $3 billion over the next two years, which includes $1 billion cost savings already achieved in airfreight.

While USPS is looking to move more to ground shipments as a cost-saving tactic, air cargo shipments have been rising globally. Last month the International Air Transport Association said that total demand for air cargo, which is measured in cargo ton-kilometers, climbed 18.4% in January compared with the prior-year period. That’s the highest annual growth in the figure since the summer of 2021.

Shares of United Parcel Service Inc. dipped slightly in Monday afternoon trading, while FedEx’s stock declined nearly 3%.

Abandoned Morrisons building, magazines and debris on floor

Footage recorded by ‘urban explorers’ shows an abandoned supermarket covered in graffiti and old TV guides.

The Morrisons in Shirley, West Midlands , closed in 2019 after a review of the company’s branches.

The supermarket giant said at the time they would redeploy staff, however no clear plans were made for the building itself.

Urban explorer and streamer Don Andrew, his brother Kieran and friend Aser visited the site on Sunday morning.

Livestreaming the property on Facebook, the findings were slightly unsettling.

On the floor were remnants of the time just before lockdown, with magazines dating back to January 2020.

Inside the abandoned Morrisons in Shirley. West Midlands

In the stream, panels can be seen missing from the ceiling, and strewn wires hanging from above.

‘Once we found the first entrance it was kind of an addiction to keep going back, as mad as it sounds,’ Don told the Sun .

‘The fire exit is wide open, if you’re at the front of the building you can walk straight in there, up the stairs and you’re onto the roof of the car park.

‘From the car park you can go down the stairs into the Morrisons. But it is pitch black and you need a torch.

‘There’s hanging wires, bits of graffiti, the TV catalogues, the shutters are half open. Pretty much everything is gone.’

Car park of the abandoned Morrisons in Shirley, West Midlands

Don has been going to the property for almost a year, returning three times since he first discovered he could get in.

‘The first time I went in there it was freaky. It’s part of my town, there’s no windows, it was eerie and spooky.

‘All I could hear was a door slamming behind me the whole time. It was weird. The more I’m doing it, I’m not as paranoid now.’
