South Africa Visa for UK Citizens

The majority of foreign passport holders are required to obtain a South Africa visa to travel to the country. A South Africa visa for UK citizens is not required for short periods of stay, but British passport holders need a South African visa for longer visits and certain travel purposes

A South Africa eVisa system has now been launched for 14 countries . The South Africa electronic visa is available through a simple online application which will only take a few minutes to complete.

The electronic visa is being implemented in order to expedite the application process to allow foreign citizens easier access to South Africa, eliminating the need to apply at a consulate or embassy.

A South Africa electronic visa for UK citizens is not currently available, and it is not yet known if British nationals will be added to the eVisa program in the future. At present, British passport holders who need a South Africa visa need to submit an embassy application.

Do I Need a Visa for South Africa from the UK?

At present, citizens of 28 countries can enter South Africa visa-free for up to 30 days. Passport holders of an additional 48 nationalities can visit South Africa visa-free for tourism or business for a maximum 90-day stay, including citizens of the United Kingdom.

Although a South Africa visa for UK citizens is not required for stays up to 90 days , British travelers will be required to obtain one of the South Africa visa types for longer visits and purposes other than tourism or business.

British nationals who possess specific professional skills that are in demand in the country are able to apply for a South Africa critical skills visa for UK citizens. This is available for different periods depending on the type of work to be undertaken.

Those who wish to apply for a South African work visa for UK citizens can do so at the embassy in London, or through a Visa Facilitation Services Center in South Africa.

Those wishing to stay for longer than 90 days for tourism or business will also need to apply for a South African visa for UK citizens from an embassy or consulate.

South Africa Visa Requirements for British Citizens

The South Africa visa requirements for British citizens depend on the type of visa the individual needs.

  • A valid UK passport
  • Completed application form for the relevant visa type
  • Payment method to pay the visa fee
  • Proof of sufficient funds to cover the stay in South Africa
  • Proof of medical insurance cover
  • Letter of invitation from an educational institute ( study visas )
  • Police clearance certificate (study or work visas)
  • Certificate from the Department of Labor ( work visas )

If the South Africa eVisa becomes available for UK citizens, this page will be updated with the requirements for the electronic visa.

How to Apply for South Africa Visa from the UK

As stated above, a South African eVisa for UK citizens is not currently available.

British nationals are not currently able to use an online application if they need a visa for South Africa. Instead, they must use the traditional embassy application method and need to:

  • Make an appointment at the nearest South African embassy or consulate
  • Complete a visa application
  • Gather the supporting documents required for the type of visa
  • Attend an in-person interview with the relevant documents
  • Pay the visa fee to submit their application

Processing times for South African embassy visas can often be lengthy. Therefore, UK applicants are advised to begin the process of obtaining the visa far in advance of their intended date of arrival in South Africa.

Once the visa is approved, travelers will be able to visit the country using a copy of the South Africa Visa for UK citizens and their corresponding passport, which must be the same as that used for the application.

Depending on the type of visa issued, additional documentation may be requested at border entry points before the traveler is granted entry.

These may include proof of onward or return flights, or a certificate of vaccination if the traveler is arriving form a yellow fever country.

Apply for a visa

If you want to visit South Africa, you must produce a valid visa before you can enter into the country. A visa will be issued for a visit for tourism or business purposes and is valid for a period of 90 days.

Some countries are exempted from visa control, which means that citizens from those countries do not need a visa to visit South Africa.

Visas are not issued at South African ports of entry, and airline officials must insist on visas before allowing passengers to board. If you arrive without a visa, immigration officials are obliged to put you onto a flight back to your home country. Depending on your intended visit, you can apply for a Visitor’s Visa or a Transit Visa. Find out more about the:

UK visa application guide contents

Step 1: choose your visa.

  • Step 2: Passport
  • Step 3: Documents
  • Step 4: Check visa fees
  • Step 5: Apply
  • Step 6: Appointments
  • Step 7: Waiting period

Step 8: Before you leave

Step 9: enjoy the uk.

There are a host of UK visas that you can apply for. Make sure you choose the right one for your intent. Whether you want to visit, work or study in the UK, there’s a visa for you.

  • Visitor visa – For people visiting or studying for 6 months or less
  • Skilled Worker visa – For those who are wanting to work in the UK for the long-term
  • Global Business Mobility route – A group of five business visas for those looking to move their business to the UK
  • Business , Innovator  and Start-up visas  – For those wanting to start a new business in the UK
  • Study visas - For those wanting to study longer than six months, such as undergraduate or postgraduate degrees
  • Family visas – For those joining family members who are British citizens
  • Visas for children – For children joining their parents or legal guardians
  • Ancestry visa – For those who can claim British ancestry

Step 2: Get your passport in order

If you’ve already got a passport, you’ll need to check a couple of things:

  • It needs to be valid for the duration of your stay in the UK
  • You need at least two blank facing pages for your visa and stamps

If your passport is expired (or about to expire), you’ll need to either renew it or apply for a new one, depending on your nationality.

When you apply for a new passport, you’ll have to do it in person so your identity can be verified. Processing times can vary – expect to wait around seven to 21 working days. Passports are generally valid for 10 years.

When can’t you apply for a UK visa?

If you’re already in the UK, you won’t be able to apply for a visa. You may be able to switch to a different visa or extend your stay while in the UK .

Step 3: Get all your documents

The documents you need depend on the visa you apply for. Research your specific application to check you've got everything in order.

TB test results

South Africans applying for a UK visa valid for longer than six months are required to provide tuberculosis (TB) results. If you have been living in one of the countries that does not require a TB test, and are returning to South Africa to make your application, a TB test won’t be required. Your dedicated caseworker will advise you accordingly.

Why it’s so important to be tested at a UKVI-approved clinic

If you get tested at a clinic that has not been approved by by UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI), your application will be denied and you will not be allowed to enter the country on a valid UK visa. It is vital that you contact one of the three clinics below and make them aware that you are undergoing the TB test for a UK visa application.

Before the screening, make sure you bring your passport, two passport-sized photos and proof of payment of your test fee (printed).

Are there any exceptions to this rule?

If you’re planning to stay in the UK for less than six months on a UK visitor visa, you don’t need to get tested for TB.

If you are applying on behalf of a child/children under the age of eleven, they still need to attend the appointment but will most likely not have to undergo a chest x-ray.

Step 4: Check your visa fees

Different visas have different fees. Make sure you’re prepared by checking how much yours will set you back. Here are some common visas and their respective government application fees*:

*These fees are correct as of 4 October 2024 and are charged by UKVI and exclude any fees charged by us.

Immigration healthcare surcharge

You might need to pay a healthcare surcharge as part of your immigration application, depending on the visa you’re applying for. The current IHS fee of £624 is set to increase to £1,035 at the end of 2023 or early 2024. You’ll have to pay:

  • £776 per year for a Student visa, for example £1,552 for a two-year visa
  • £776 per year for visa and immigration applicants who are under the age of 18 at the time of application
  • £1,035 per year for all other visa and immigration applications, for example £5,120 for a five-year visa

Step 5: Apply for your UK visa

We always recommend letting an experienced immigration consultant help with your visa application. From start to finish, they will be with you at every step. No visa application process is the same, and your requirements will vary according your circumstances.

Once they know what you’re looking for, they will talk you through the process and provide you with all the information you need to ensure a smooth application.

They will also help you get all your documents in order and submit the application on your behalf.

We offer a no visa, no fee service.

Step 6: attend appointments.

As part of your application, you may be required to attend an appointment to capture your biometric information – photos and fingerprints. You’ll need to check what the process is in your country or speak to an advisor if you’re unsure. If we handle your visa application, we’ll let you know well in advance about any appointments you’ll need to attend.

Step 7: The waiting period

After you’ve made your application, all that’s left is to wait for a decision. There are no definite waiting periods, but it’s generally a couple of weeks. Here’s how long it can take per visa category:

It’s important to note that post-Covid these waiting times have increased drastically. You could wait up to 15 weeks for a decision on a Skilled Worker visa, and 24 weeks for a Spousal visa at this point in time.

Aside from your visa, there are a few other things you need to consider before you set off to the UK. Of course, you'll need to book flights to get there. You’ll also need to plan for any costs associated with staying there, such as accommodation, food and transport.

How to Apply for a Visa

Please note that the information below changes regularly. For example, the UK leaving the EU may change the ability to travel visa-free to European countries. Therefore, you should always check the visa requirements of your country of destination before you travel.

This question comes up when you are considering travelling to one of the European or Schengen Countries or another country. Once you have obtained refugee status, you may wonder where you can travel without the need for a visa.

If you are a holder of a Refugee Travel Document issued by the United Kingdom under the 1951 United Nations Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees , you can travel visa-free to a lot of countries. Different countries have their own travel restrictions and require you to have a visa even for short term visits like tourism, even if you have a Refugee Travel Document.

When you are travelling, you will need to make sure that you carry your valid UK residence permit confirming your refugee status together with the Refugee Travel Document.

N OTE: This list is subject to changes at any time . We recommend double-checking information on the current visa requirements with the embassy of your country of destination before making any travel arrangements or you can start an application with IaM and we can check for you. IaM is not liable for any immigration or other difficulties you may encounter based on the information on this page.

Getting a Travel Visa

A travel visa is an official document, usually stamped or affixed into the bearer’s passport, that grants the right to legally enter, remain within, or leave a foreign country. A  Schengen visa , for example, allows you to travel to any of the  Schengen countries  as well as other  non-Schengen countries  that allow travellers to enter their countries with a Schengen visa.

Travellers without a valid travel visa will be refused entry into a country. And, if the individual enters the country through illegal means and is later discovered, may be punished and deported.

Each country has their own processes for applying for a visa. Generally, you will need to fill in an application form and submit any requirements that the consulate or embassy asks for, and some even require you to appear for an interview .

There are many factors that could add to your visa being approved or rejected by the consulate, and many find the process of applying for a visa stressful for this reason. You can choose to do this on your own, or get a service like IaM to help you either make the application or check the application that you filled out yourself.

If you want to make your own visa application to any of the Schengen countries , check out our blog posts for our detailed guides:

My first inquiry: HI, my UK Refugee Travel Documents will expire in 14/11/2021 (that is bit less than 3 months from now). Can I still use it to travel to Europe (Greece or Lithuania)?

My second inquiry: about a week ago I contacted Lithuania (by email) asking if I could visit Lithuania using my Refugee Travel Document (above) visa-free. They confirmed that I COULD! However, in the list above Lithuania is under the “Countries that REQUIRE visas for visitors with the Refugee Travel Document (blue) issued under the 1951 UN Convention”. Can you explain how this works please?

You need to make sure that your travel document is valid if you plan to travel. As we have put up in the notice, these restrictions can change at any time so we recommend you check with the embassy.

Hi I am a Zimbabwean national who holds a UK refugee travel document and I just wanted to check if South Africa definitely does not require a visa as the last time a friend travelled there about ten years ago they did require one. At that time it did state that we needed one on their website but this is no longer stated so am guessing this has changed. Checked with the embassy but referred me to vfs global.

Regarding my earlier enquiry just got an email from VFS global South Africa desk and the agent stated that a visa would need to be applied for prior to travel if I hold a UK refugee travel document as a Zimbabwean national.

Middle East latest: Iranian commandos hijack Israel-linked cargo ship by helicopter - Israel vows 'consequences'

Iranian forces have seized an Israel-linked cargo ship with 25 crew members on board, steering it towards Iran. Israel has vowed there will be "consequences" for the hijacking, and demanded the EU sanction Iran and deem its Revolutionary Guards terrorists.

  • Risk of dragging US and UK into another major conflict
  • US 'prepared to intercept' strikes on Israel
  • Explained: Why is Iran threatening to attack Israel?
  • Live reporting by  Brad Young

Israel's "blatant" provocation of Iran means a response was expected, says Yoss Mekelberg, associate fellow at Chatham House's Middle East and North Africa programme.

But the seizure of a commercial ship in the Strait of Hormuz was "not exactly the response we expected, it is a relatively minor one," he said.

Iran either felt that it had to do something but did not wish to escalate the situation, or this is the "first among other acts".

Mr Mekelberg said it was difficult to know what Benjamin Netanyahu's priorities were, having lost much of the support of the international community in Gaza and now "provoking [Iran] to react".

Iran blames an attack on its consulate in Syria that killed senior commanders on Israel - Israel has not said it was responsible.

"It was so blatant there is an expectation... for a response, the question is what kind of response," said Mr Mekelberg.

A total of 33,686 Palestinians have been killed in Israel's military offensive so far, the Hamas-led health ministry has said.

A further 76,309 people have been wounded, it added.

There have been 52 Palestinians killed and 95 injured in the last 24 hours, it said in a statement.

The ministry does not differentiate between civilian and militant deaths.

While some Israeli officials have sought to cast doubt on fatality figures given out by the Palestinian Health Authority in Gaza, a number of independent groups say they have proved to be largely reliable and broadly in line with those later produced by the UN and Israel itself.

Examination of data from previous Gaza conflicts - the health ministry's counts compared with the post-war United Nations analysis - shows that the initial data is largely accurate with, at most, a 10-12% discrepancy.

The Netherlands will close its embassy in Tehran tomorrow as a precaution, the Dutch foreign ministry has said.

It cited rising tensions between Iran and Israel.

The ministry added that it would decide on Sunday whether the embassy would reopen on Monday.

By  Alex Rossi , international correspondent

This was no act of maritime piracy and it was not meant to be. It was a warning from a major state which would have been sanctioned at the highest levels in Tehran.

In daylight, commandos from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps board and takeover a ship in the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.

Huge amounts of oil and gas pass through the waterway everyday - if it was closed, it would have huge ramifications for global trade. In short, it would cause chaos.

Why have the Iranians done this? Well, timing is everything.

The ship, the MSC Aries, is Portuguese-flagged but it is linked to Zodiac Maritime, which is part of Israeli billionaire's Eyal Ofer's portfolio.

Tensions between Israel and Iran are extraordinarily high - US intelligence claims an Iranian missile attack on Israel as retaliation for the Damascus consulate strike is imminent.

The taking of the ship is unlikely to draw a military response from the IDF but it sends signals.

It is a provocation to Jerusalem but it's also a message to Israel's allies that Iran can cause mayhem by closing the Strait of Hormuz.

In that sense it is a projection of Iranian power and a warning that standing with Israel can bring consequences.

Earlier this morning, an Israeli human rights group said dozens of settlers stormed a Palestinian village in the occupied West Bank, shooting and setting fire to cars and houses.

Settlers entered the village of al-Mughayyir in search of a missing 14-year-old Israeli boy, according to rights group Yesh Din, before killing a man and wounding 25 others.

The Israeli army has now said the body of the Israeli boy has been found.

Binyamin Achimair was killed in a "terrorist attack", the IDF said.

"Security forces are continuing the pursuit after those suspected of carrying out the attack," the army said.

Footage shows Iranian Revolutionary Guards commandos seizing a Portuguese-flagged commercial ship linked to Israel.

A helicopter used by the Guards to board the vessel can be seen hovering above the containers.

The attack appeared to use similar methods to the Houthis in November, when the group stormed the Galaxy Leader in the southern Red Sea.

Iran is conducting piracy and should be sanctioned for it, Israel's foreign minister has demanded.

If you're just joining us, Iran's Revolutionary Guards has seized an Israeli-linked cargo ship in the Strait of Hormuz.

Israel Katz said: "The Ayatollah regime of Khamenei is a criminal regime that supports Hamas's crimes and is now conducting a pirate operation in violation of international law.

"I call on the European Union and the free world to immediately declare the Iranian Revolutionary Guards corps as a terrorist organisation and to sanction Iran now."

This is the biggest ship that has been seized or attacked so far, says military analyst Michael Clarke.

At least 20 crew members on board the MSC Aries have now become hostages, he said.

The UK and US have a lot of naval assets in the area of the hijacking, and so Iran is effectively issuing a threat to widen tensions, explained the professor.

"This is a big moment. This is 1,000 miles away from the Gulf of Aden and what the Houthis were doing in the southern part of the Red Sea."

He recalled the Galaxy Leader, which was taken by the Houthis using the same methods.

"The important thing is this is the Revolutionary Guard in Iran. This is not some bunch of pirates, not even the Houthis."

The ship's position was squarely within the shipping lane and it was "directly targeted," said Clarke.

"When they say it was in Iranian waters, that's rubbish.

"It was carefully selected," he says, pointing to its links to Israeli businessman Eyal Ofer.

"The Iranians are being very provocative."

This seizure "ratchets up tensions" between Iran and Israel, says international correspondent Alex Rossi .

It is difficult to say whether this action is the what Iran threatened against Israel after its consulate was attacked in Syria, he said.

Iranian state media has said the ship's location, next to the Strait of Hormuz, was a threat to Iranian security.

People in Israel are still bracing for something more, said Rossi.

"It certainly ramps things up. But of course people here are waiting for that response that has been promised by the Iranians."

It appears as though the retaliation "could be something that's calibrated not to reach the level of war".

Nonetheless, Rossi said he thought it was "probably the most serious moment in the Middle East since the 1973 Yom Kippur war."

The company Zodiac Maritime has confirmed that they are the owner of the seized ship, MSC Aries.

It said the vessel was boarded by Iranian authorities via helicopter as it passed the Strait of Hormuz at 2.34am (UTC).

The ship has since been diverted towards Iran with 25 crew onboard.

"We are working closely with the relevant authorities to ensure their wellbeing, and safe return of the vessel," a statement read.

Iran's state news agency said the vessel, which was Portuguese-flagged, was "linked to Israel".

Zodiac Maritime is an international shipping company partly owned by Israeli businessman Eyal Ofer.
