Aussie man brutally stabbed while on holiday in Bali

An Australian man on holiday in Bali has been left with horrific stab wounds and thousands of dollars in medical bills following a brutal stabbing attack.

The partner of a man allegedly set upon and stabbed while standing outside a convenience store in Bali is hoping to raise funds to pay for his “extreme” hospital bills.

Queensland woman Scarlett Carruthers launched a GoFundMe page on behalf of her boyfriend, Peter Nye, after the 28-year-old-old FIFO worker was allegedly bashed by a “group of men” in the popular tourist destination of Kuta on Friday.

Scarlett Carruthers has launched a GoFundMe page for her partner, Peter Nye, both pictured.

Ms Carruthers said the attack, which happened on the couple’s last night in Bali, resulted in both Mr Nye and his friend sustaining more than 20 stab wounds between them.

“We decided to go for a meal and then get an early night ready for our flight home the next day,” the woman explained on the GoFundMe page.

“My partner and his friend ended up being stabbed over 20 times in the face, neck, head, eye, chest, both arms and ear.

“My boyfriend nearly lost his eyesight and now has to have cosmetic surgery on his face. [His friend] nearly lost his life due to blood loss, he was given 30 minutes to live if we didn’t get to the hospital on time.”

Mr Nye, according to his partner, has more than $50,000 worth of hospital bills to cover. The pair failed to get travel insurance prior to their trip to Bali.

Ms Carruthers said that neither she nor her partner had purchased travel insurance, meaning the hospital stay, surgery, extra accommodation and flight changes is amounting to thousands of dollars in out-of-pocket expenses.

“We are now stuck in hospital where they won’t preform any surgery until we pay for the bill first,” she explained.

“The bill for my partner [Peter] is $50k minimum.”

The distraught traveller said her friend who was also involved in the attacked and suffered from extensive blood loss is also up for around $15,000 in medical bills.

Ms Carruthers said that in addition to the medical bills, the pair will need to pay for accommodation and book new flights given they were unable to use their original tickets.

Ms Carruthers is raising money to help cover her partner’s hospital bills.

“We know we should have gotten travel insurance but unfortunately we were stupid and forgot not expecting anything like this to happen,” she stressed.

Travel Fund Money Box

A travel fund money box is a great way to save money for your next vacation. You can either use an old coffee can or a special money box designed for this purpose.

To start, decide how much money you want to put into your travel fund each month. Then, divide that amount by the number of weeks in the month. This will give you the amount you need to put into your travel fund each week.

If you want to put $100 into your travel fund each month, you would need to put $10 into your fund each week. If you want to put $200 into your fund each month, you would need to put $20 into your fund each week.

When you get your paycheck, automatically put the designated amount into your travel fund money box. This will help you to save money without having to think about it.

When you’re ready to take a vacation, you’ll have the money saved up to cover the costs. Plus, you’ll have the added bonus of knowing that you saved the money yourself, which makes the vacation even more enjoyable!

How much money should be in a travel fund?

This is a question that many people ask and there is no one definitive answer. It depends on a variety of factors, including where you are going, how long you will be gone, and what type of trip it is. However, there are some general guidelines that can help you determine how much money you will need.

If you are going on a short trip, such as a weekend getaway, you probably won’t need as much money as if you are going on a longer trip, such as a vacation. Additionally, if you are going to a developed country, you will likely need less money than if you are going to a developing country.

One thing to keep in mind is that you should always have some extra money in case of unexpected expenses. It’s always better to be safe than sorry, so it’s a good idea to have at least a few hundred dollars in your travel fund.

Ultimately, how much money you need depends on your individual circumstances. However, by keeping the above guidelines in mind, you can get a general idea of how much you will need.

Where should I keep my travel fund?

When it comes to travel, you want to make sure you have everything organized and ready to go before you depart. One of the most important things to organize is your finances. One question you may ask is, “Where should I keep my travel fund?”

There are a few different options when it comes to where to keep your travel fund. You can choose to keep it in a savings account, a checking account, or a travel fund account.

A savings account is a good option if you want your money to grow over time. The interest rates on savings accounts are usually higher than on checking accounts, so your money will earn more interest if it’s in a savings account.

A checking account is a good option if you want to be able to easily access your money. This is a good option if you’re going to be using your travel fund to pay for your trip.

A travel fund account is a special account designed for saving money for travel. These accounts usually have higher interest rates than regular savings accounts, and some banks even offer bonuses for signing up for a travel fund account.

No matter which option you choose, make sure to keep your travel fund in a safe place. You don’t want to lose your money just before your trip.

How do I set up a travel fund?

A travel fund can be an important part of your overall financial planning.

There are a few things to keep in mind when setting one up.

First, decide how much money you would like to have available for travel.

Then, determine how you will save up for your trip.

You can either set aside a fixed amount each month or save up for a specific trip.

Whatever you decide, make sure you are consistent with your savings plan.

If you can, try to avoid withdrawing money from your travel fund except for travel-related expenses.

This will help ensure that your fund remains intact and can be used for its intended purpose.

If you are looking to set up a travel fund, there are a few things to keep in mind.

If you are looking to travel in the near future, it’s a good idea to start saving now.

By setting up a travel fund, you can make your dream vacation a reality.

How much should I save for travel fund?

How much should you save for your travel fund? It depends on your travel plans and budget.

If you’re looking to take a few smaller trips during the year, you may only need to save a few hundred dollars. However, if you’re planning a longer, more expensive trip, you may need to save thousands of dollars.

Start by creating a budget and determining how much you can afford to save each month. If you can save $100 a month, you’ll have $1,200 saved in a year. If you can save $500 a month, you’ll have $6,000 saved in a year.

If you’re not currently saving for your travel fund, start small and gradually increase your savings as you get closer to your departure date. This will help you avoid feeling overwhelmed and discouraged.

When it comes to your travel fund, it’s important to be realistic. Don’t put all your eggs in one basket, and make sure you have some money saved in case of emergencies.

Whatever your budget, make sure you save enough to enjoy your trip without worrying about money. Have fun and relax on your vacation – don’t stress about the finances!

What is the 50 30 20 budget rule?

The 50 30 20 budget rule is a guideline for how to divide your income between different expenses. The rule recommends that you spend 50% of your income on essentials, 30% on discretionary items, and 20% on savings.

The 50 30 20 budget rule is based on the idea that you should live within your means and be mindful of your spending. It can help you to stay on track with your finances and make sure that you are not overspending on non-essential items.

The 50 30 20 budget rule is not a hard and fast rule, but it can be a helpful guideline to follow. You may want to adjust the percentages to meet your own needs and budget. For example, if you have a lot of debt you may want to allocate more of your income to savings and less to discretionary spending.

The 50 30 20 budget rule is a good way to keep your finances in check and make sure you are not overspending. By following this rule, you can make sure that you have enough money to cover your essential expenses, save for the future, and still have some money left over for discretionary spending.

How much would it cost to travel the world for 6 months?

How much would it cost to travel the world for six months? This is a question that has been asked by many people, and the answer is not a simple one. The cost of traveling the world for six months will vary depending on your personal spending habits, the destinations you visit, and the type of transportation you use. However, there are some general costs that you can expect to pay when traveling the world.

One of the biggest expenses when traveling the world is airfare. If you are planning to visit a lot of different countries, your airfare will likely be your largest expense. However, there are ways to reduce the cost of airfare. One way is to book your tickets as far in advance as possible. Another way is to find cheap flights from budget airlines.

Another big expense when traveling is accommodation. If you are staying in hotels, your costs will add up quickly. However, there are ways to reduce your accommodation costs. One way is to stay in hostels or guesthouses. Another way is to Couchsurf or stay with friends and family.

Food is another major expense when traveling. If you are eating in restaurants all the time, your costs will quickly add up. However, there are ways to reduce your food costs. One way is to cook your own food. Another way is to eat at local markets.

Activities and sightseeing can also be expensive when traveling. If you are visiting a lot of tourist destinations, your costs will add up quickly. However, there are ways to reduce your activity costs. One way is to do free activities, such as walking and hiking. Another way is to visit less popular destinations.

In general, the cost of traveling the world for six months will vary depending on your personal spending habits, the destinations you visit, and the type of transportation you use. However, there are some general costs that you can expect to pay when traveling the world.

How can I save money for a 4 month trip?

There are a few things you can do to save money for a 4-month trip. One is to create a budget and stick to it. Track your spending for a month and see where you can cut back. Another is to sell unused belongings. Finally, consider working a part-time job to save money.

US House passes temporary funding bill to avert government shutdown

Passage of bill comes after congressional leaders from both parties announced agreement on Wednesday

The House has passed a short-term funding bill, narrowly averting a partial government shutdown that would have taken place this weekend.

The bill passed with a 320-99 vote on Thursday afternoon. Among Republicans , 113 voted yes and 97 voted no. Meanwhile, 207 Democrats voted yes and two voted against it.

The two Democrats who voted against the bill were Mike Quigley of Illinois and Jake Auchincloss of Massachusetts.

The bill’s passage comes after congressional leaders from both parties, including the House speaker, Mike Johnson; the House minority leader, Hakeem Jeffries; the Senate majority leader, Chuck Schumer; the Senate minority leader, Mitch McConnell; as well as leaders of the House and Senate appropriations committees, announced the agreement on Wednesday.

“To give the House and Senate appropriations committees adequate time to execute on this deal in principle, including drafting, preparing report language, scoring and other technical matters and to allow members 72 hours to review, a short-term continuing resolution to fund agencies through March 8 and the 22 will be necessary, and voted on by the House and Senate this week,” the statement said.

With the House passing the temporary funding bill on Thursday, a congressional vote is now expected next week for six full-year appropriations bills that will extend funding for agencies under the departments of agriculture-FDA, commerce-justice and science, energy and water development, interior, military construction-veterans affairs and transportation-housing and urban development.

“These bills will adhere to the Fiscal Responsibility Act discretionary spending limits and January’s topline spending agreement,” congressional leaders said on Wednesday.

The remaining six appropriations bills set to be finalized and voted on by 22 March revolve around the departments of defense, financial services and general government, homeland security, labor-health and human services, as well as legislative branch and state and foreign operations.

Following Thursday’s vote, Virginia’s Democratic representative Abigail Spanberger said that despite voting alongside colleagues who “understand our fundamental responsibility to keep our government functioning … Speaker Johnson’s leadership has our country yet again one week away from a partial government shutdown and within a month of the whole of the federal government shutting its doors.

“As our country remains on a collision course with a completely preventable potential shutdown, I will continue to press Speaker Johnson to bring bipartisan bills forward that would pass in the US House, pass in the US Senate, and get to the president’s desk,” she added.

Before Thursday’s vote, Joe Biden and Kamala Harris met with congressional leaders in attempts to help avert a partial government shutdown, which Biden said would “significantly” damage the economy.

The bill will now head to the Senate, where the majority leader, Chuck Schumer, said the chamber could vote as early as Thursday evening.

“Once the House acts, I hope the Senate can pass the short-term CR [continuing resolution] as soon as tonight, but that will require all of us working together. There’s certainly no reason this should take a very long time. So, let’s cooperate and get it done quickly,” Schumer said .

How to Financially Prepare for a Government Shutdown

Understand the money implications of a government shutdown.

Prepare for a Government Shutdown

Shot of a young couple looking anxious while doing their budget at home

PeopleImages | Getty Images

When a government shutdown occurs, your budget could be affected in myriad ways – you might see few to no changes in certain areas, but others segments could have more intense consequences.

Key Takeaways:

  • Take some time to learn how a government shutdown could impact your finances. You may find that government services are delayed and that interest rates change.
  • If possible, use your emergency fund savings to cover expenses and avoid reaching for credit cards, which can result in high-interest debt.
  • Stay informed about the status of your government benefits and assistance programs. Check if there are local resources available that could help you and consider holding off on travel and large purchases.
  • You may want to evaluate your investments and reduce your expenses to weather any financial uncertainty. You could also take on a part-time job while you wait for government programs to resume.

When a government shutdown occurs , your budget could be affected in myriad ways.

You might see few to no changes in certain areas, such as continued Social Security paychecks or a government pension. Other segments could have more intense consequences, including delays in travel or application approvals. The exact implications will depend on many factors and will be based on the agreements that Congress makes in the next few days.

Every year, Congress works to pass budget legislation for the next fiscal year, which the president then signs. Under regular conditions, Congress passes annual spending bills before the start of the new fiscal year, which takes place every Oct. 1. If the government does not reach an agreement, however, it can pass short-term spending bills to keep Congress operating while lawmakers work to pass the annual spending bills.

The annual spending bills consist of 12 appropriations bills, and Congress has not yet enacted any full-year appropriations for the fiscal year of 2024. The third continuing resolution (CR) for the fiscal year of 2024, which provides short-term federal spending and keeps the federal government open, is set to expire soon. If no short-term or annual spending bills are passed by then, a shutdown could occur.

The third continuing resolution for the fiscal year of 2024 is scheduled to run out in two tranches. Government funding for 4 of the 12 appropriation bills expires on March 1. A partial shutdown could occur starting on Saturday, March 2. The remaining appropriations will expire the following Friday, March 8. Lawmakers have been working to agree on spending legislation, but budgeting negotiations have not reached a resolution.

Given this, if a partial shutdown begins after March 1, many U.S. government services could be affected. While some essential jobs may continue, other workers might be furloughed until a resolution is found.

To prepare financially for a government shutdown, consider the following:

  • What is a government shutdown?
  • Check your financial emergency funds.
  • Look at your government payment needs.
  • Review your travel plans.
  • Hold back on large purchases.
  • Revisit your long-term financial plan.

What Is a Government Shutdown?

During a government shutdown, nonessential U.S. government offices close until funding is renewed. Essential services do remain in operation. Each federal agency comes up with its own shutdown plan. This means that you may notice some government services continue but in a restricted way.

Government shutdowns have occurred on occasion in the last decades. Some of the recent shutdowns include pauses during 1995 and 1996, a shutdown in 2013 and a 35-day stretch from the end of 2018 to the beginning of 2019. In the past, services such as in-hospital medical care and air traffic control, law enforcement, and power grid maintenance have been deemed essential.

Check Your Financial Emergency Funds

There could be changes to interest rates when a shutdown occurs, including a spike if market conditions take a dive. Consider squirreling away extra cash for unexpected expenses.

"It’s wise to have an emergency fund in a savings account that can cover at least three to six months’ worth of living expenses,” said Jim DesRocher, a financial advisor and founder of TrueView Financial in Middleton, Massachusetts, in an email. "This cushion can help you weather the storm without resorting to high-interest debt or dipping into long-term investments.”

Look at Your Government Payment Needs

In past shutdowns, government benefits have continued.

“Stay informed about your Social Security benefits and any other government assistance programs you may rely on,” DesRocher said. “Understand the eligibility criteria and the process to apply.”

It’s possible that certain processes will be paused during a shutdown. This could mean that if you are eligible for Medicare or Social Security , you won’t be able to get the benefit verified. During a government shutdown in 1995 and 1996, Medicare applicants were temporarily turned away. Social Security requests might not be reviewed, and tax refunds could be delayed as well.

If you’re in a tight money spot, look for other places for help.

"Various nonprofit and community-based organizations offer assistance during government shutdowns,” said Daniel Morris, founder of My Caring Plan, an elder care resources hub, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in an email. A few to try: civic groups, senior centers, food banks and thrift stores.

Review Your Travel Plans

In previous shutdowns, national parks have halted visitor entry or services. In 2018 and 2019, when the government paused its funding, some places remained open. However, visitors did not receive services inside the parks.

In addition, there were extra delays at airports during the 2018-2019 shutdown. This was due to shortages related to Transportation Security Administration agents. In their absence, fewer security checkpoints were open and travelers had to wait longer than usual in lines.

Hold Back on Large Purchases

When there are uncertain times, you may opt to avoid new loans or significant home renovations .

"Reduce nonessential spending,” Morris said. This will keep your cash reserves intact, and it will prevent you from overleveraging your finances. Once the government resumes and the market stabilizes, you might decide to move forward with your plans.

Revisit Your Long-Term Financial Plan

You may want to sit down and spend some time evaluating your portfolio and the different risk levels of your investments. If your job position faces uncertainty due to a government shutdown, you might look for other ways to bring in cash.

"Diversify your income sources by exploring part-time work or side gigs, which can provide an additional financial safety net during uncertain times,” DesRocher said. “Being proactive and maintaining financial flexibility will help you weather government shutdowns or other unexpected financial challenges more effectively.”

Guns and Goodies: How LaPierre Spent the N.R.A.’s Money

Evidence showed that the National Rifle Association’s leader lived well on donated money as he fought regulations on firearms.

The case brought by New York’s attorney general , Letitia James, against the National Rifle Association aimed to show how it used donations from gun owners across the country to pay for luxuries and exotic travel for its executives.

Its leader, Wayne LaPierre, was the face of obdurate resistance to regulations on firearms. He argued for untrammeled Second Amendment rights and the self-reliance afforded by firepower. Behind the scenes, however, Mr. LaPierre had a taste for the good life, spending the group’s money on luxuries like Bahamian vacations.

But such trips were far from the most lavish or outlandish expenditures. Here are some of the most notable instances of misspending for which he was found liable Friday, according to evidence and testimony.

CLOTHES : Between 2004 and 2017, Mr. LaPierre spent nearly $275,000 on suits from a luxury Beverly Hills boutique, Zegna. Mr. LaPierre said he bought them on the recommendation of an N.R.A. contractor who “hated my clothing.” Mr. LaPierre had argued that the suits were just “costumes I wore on TV,” albeit extremely expensive ones.

ITALIAN FOOD : Mr. LaPierre testified that he didn’t drink and didn’t smoke, but he certainly knew how to pay a tab: Over 15 days in June 2016, the N.R.A. spent $5,398.18 at Landini Brothers Restaurant, commonly referred to as Landini’s by the defendants, an Italian restaurant in Alexandria, Va. Despite that, Mr. LaPierre seemingly didn’t have a great time. “I hated that cigar bar,” he said.

TRAVEL : Mr. LaPierre spent nearly $250,000 on flights around the world, including Italy, Budapest, the Bahamas and the Biggest Little City in World: Reno, Nev. His N.R.A.-paid vacations also sounded lush. He spent $107,620 for a vacation to the Bahamas in 2016, where he stayed on a superyacht that had a personal chef and personal watercraft.

GIFTS : Mr. LaPierre was generous, billing the organization for a number of pricey gifts, including a $1,260 handbag and $860 in candlesticks from Bergdorf Goodman. There was also fitness gear, including about $400 in Fitbits for friends and family.

INSECT CONTROL : After noticing that his security staff was getting eaten alive, Mr. LaPierre spent $810 on a mosquito control package for his home in 2017. “Security people would be out there all night,” he said.

Tiny home sensation Boxabl welcomes investors in as its founders plan to cash out $10 million

  • Boxabl's father and son cofounders are seeking to cash out $10 million in a new funding round.
  • The cofounders, Paolo and Galiano Tiramani, have previously sold $10 million of shares.
  • Boxabl has struggled to become profitable and could run out of funds by the end of the year.

Boxabl, a builder of factory-made tiny homes, has struggled to establish a profitable business model and could run out of funds by the end of the year.

As the company has sought a financial lifeline by inviting more investors in, its cofounders are cashing out.

Paola Tiramani, Boxabl's CEO, and his 36-year-old son Galiano, the company's director of marketing, plan to sell $10 million in shares they own in the privately held firm as part of a recently unveiled stock offering.

Experts in the startup world questioned the decision by the senior executives to sell shares that could otherwise be sold off by the company to provide it with more cash for its operations.

"It's an important consideration in this funding environment as to whether that money that's coming into the business should be used to help support the business operations, the product and all the growth opportunities or put in the hands of the founders," said Chad Cohen, a former chief financial officer at Zillow who recently launched his own business consulting firm, Scala Advisors, which will focus on startups. "$10 million is a lot of money."

The Tiramanis together previously sold off about $10 million of their shares in a 2022 fundraising round and have awarded themselves annual salaries of close to a million dollars each.

The two men have raked in millions of dollars while Boxabl has burned through tens of millions of dollars of investor cash and has succeeded in delivering its units to only a handful of customers.

Business Insider recently reported how customers who had placed deposits for Boxabl units had grown tired of waiting and had asked to be refunded.

According to the company's most recent financial information for the first three quarters of 2023, Boxabl's revenue sharply fell from the previous year. Its operations consume nearly $3 million a month.

Based on its current burn rate and its plans to spend millions of dollars on automation equipment, it could run out of cash by the end of the year if it isn't able to raise significant sums through the new funding round or by securing financing.

Experts on entrepreneurship and corporate governance saw an ominous sign in the decision by the Tirmanis to withdraw cash at such a tenuous moment in its business.

"They have less confidence in their company than they have in the cash they've raised," said Erik Gordon, a professor at the University of Michigan's Ross School of Business. "Maybe they're afraid that if they don't sell shares now they will walk away with nothing."

Boxabl did not return requests seeking comment for this article.

A spigot of cash running dry

Boxabl is seeking to raise $64 million in the share offering, an additional $10 million for the Tirmanis, and $1 million for other insiders at the company.

In recent years, the company became a social media sensation and crowdfunding star for its foldable, factory-made homes, called Casitas, that it has said will retail for $60,000 each. The firm, based in North Las Vegas, Nevada, says its assembly line production techniques and innovative design will revolutionize the homebuilding industry, allowing it to manufacture and install homes more cheaply and efficiently.

The company's mission and business prospects have resonated with the public, and it has raised more than $150 million, most of it from everyday investors. It has attracted a 175,000 person waiting list for its Casitas.

There are signs, however, that the spigot of cash may be running dry. A crowdfunding campaign on the platform Frontfundr in Canada was launched last year, seeking to raise as much as $300 million. But it managed to solicit only a few hundred thousand dollars.

Cohen said that raising funds in the startup world had become far more difficult amid higher interest rates.

"It's just one of those precarious environments you might be in if you're a growth stage company still burning significant amounts of money," Cohen said.

Former employees at Boxabl have raised concerns about its management and the company faces scrutiny by the Securities and Exchange Commission .

Among the insiders in the company seeking to sell shares in the funding round are Darryl and Lucille Maslak, the parents of Shawna Maslak, Galiano's wife. The pair are selling roughly $500,000 of stock they hold in the company and are the largest individual sellers after the Tirmanis in the round.

"Nobody knows more about the prospects for a company than its insiders, and nothing tells you more about what insiders know than what they do with their money," Gordon, the University of Michigan professor, said.

Moscow on a budget: 4 tips for a money-saving trip

  • #Travel tips

Let’s be honest: Moscow is one of the most underpriced world’s capitals today, speaking on behalf of a tourist wallet. Populated with over 12 million muscovites and visited by at least 8 million other people every day (tourists, migrants, habitants of suburbs), Moscow still can offer you some options for the cheapest trips. Of course, not all the budget options are obvious, but they are all absolutely available, as you may learn from our tips. And here they are.

  • City transportation

money box travel fund

If you heard some rumors about how wonderful the Moscow metro is, then you won’t be surprised at all: Moscow metro is clean, warm (it’s heated during the cold seasons), very convenient with its frequent train schedule, intuitively understandable and unapologetically cheap. That’s right, unapologetically. It costs 55 rubles ($0,9) if you buy a one-way ticket, and about 32 rubles ($0,5) if you buy a card for multiple rides called Troyka. So it’s as much as 3 times cheaper than a single ride in New York, and 7 times cheaper than in London. Another bonus of Moscow metro is that there’s one price for any ride, it doesn’t matter how many stations you ride through at one time, only 1 or all 232 of them. And of course, buying a ticket to Moscow metro, you’re also getting an imaginary pass to the museum of Soviet underground architecture and decorations: there are columns, chandeliers, mosaics, that let the Soviet history embrace you right in the hall of central stations. Don’t forget to upload an audio guide on the Moscow metro to your smartphone.

money box travel fund

Moscow differs from any other Russian or European city by the scale of its city center. It is really huge — and the “center” actually means any location inside the ring line (brown circle on the Moscow metro map), which length is 20 kilometers — right, it’s like a half-marathon! So, looking for a suitable location in Moscow, you should realize that finding a place “close to everything” is impossible. The second thing to mention, your location should be close to the metro — the perfect option would be no longer than 5 minutes walk from a station. There are lots of cheap and relatively good hostels at the remote stations, and the price starts from 600 rubles per night per person ($9). But if you’re timing is tough and you don’t want to pay extra 1000 rubles ($15) for a night taxi ride to your neighborhood, then better to pick a hostel inside the ring line. By the way, for a cheap taxi, you may use popular apps like Uber and Yandex Taxi.

Just a few tips: if you’re looking for popular neighborhoods with restaurants and pedestrian routes, then better to locate at Patriarchy ponds and Kitai-gorod areas. If you want to experience something special, then you may look at the hostels located at the skyscrapers of the famous Moscow City buildings: High-level hostel, Nebo Hostel, Like Hostel City, Say WOW hotel (from $21 per night per bed). Another option is a capsule hotel in the city center — InterQube, Buran capsule hotel, Anti-hostel (from $15 per night per capsule).

  • Museums pass

money box travel fund

Moscow has several cards that offer various combinations of best museum pass, tours, and sometimes public transport: the most popular is the Moscow pass and Moscow city pass. The prices start at about $30 per day. The pass is worth it in case you’re interested in visiting more than 2 museums per day. It’s also good to mention that Moscow Kremlin includes several museums with separate tickets, $17-18 per each. To skip the lines, you may book the tickets and tours at the website, but you should do it at least 3 days before the visit.

  • Food and more

For the last 5 years, Moscow is being challenged by the idea of gastro food courts. Stylish small restaurants with well thought short menus and tables at common space are always crowded by locals. Such gastro food courts like Depo (Belorusskaya metro station), Tsentralny market (Trubnaya metro station), Danilovsky market (Tulskaya metro station) are perfect places to try restaurant-quality food for about $10 per person. For the lovers of traditional Russian kitchen, the top choice is a café chain called Teremok or cafeteria-like chains called Bratya Karavayevy and Brusnika, where you may try borscht, bliny, and various mayonnaise-based salads, that can’t be underestimated during the cold season. The prices may surprise you in a good way a modest lunch for two persons may cost less than $10.

How to spend a perfect weekend in Moscow

Feb 11, 2020 • 5 min read

money box travel fund

Moscow enjoyed the status of capital for most of Russia’s history, except for a relatively brief period (about two hundred years), when the Tsar and the government relocated to St Petersburg . But the Bolsheviks moved the capital back to Moscow in 1918, and today it’s an extremely diverse city. It can easily take a couple of weeks to see all of its sights, but if you've only got a weekend to explore, here's how to have two perfect days in Moscow.

Exterior of St Basil's Cathedral at Red Square on a sunny autumn morning.

Start your weekend in Moscow by acquainting yourself with top-notch Russian cuisine at Grand Cafe Dr Zhivago . Located on the first floor of the historical hotel National and overlooking the Kremlin, it’s definitely one of the best breakfast spots in the city. Try millet porridge with crawfish, pearl barley porridge with oxtail or traditional cottage cheese with raisins and candied fruit.

Set aside at least half a day for Russian capital’s major attractions: the Red Square and the Kremlin . To reach the Kremlin, cross the street from Dr Zhivago and walk through the Alexander Garden to the main entrance at the Kutafya Tower . Check out all the cathedrals, including Archangel cathedral with all the tsars’ tombs and Uspensky cathedral with medieval icons. Pause to look at the famous Tsar Bell and climb Ivan the Great Bell Tower to enjoy some great views.

Zaryadye - a landscape and architectural park. Many people stroll over concrete walkways surrounding a rounded building in parkland.

Exit and walk to the Red Square through the Alexander Garden, where, if lucky, you can see the change of guard. If you’re feeling hungry, stop by the food court at Okhotny Ryad shopping complex to pick up a snack.

The Red square is dominated by four buildings of equal historical importance: the Kremlin's most famous Spasskaya (Saviour) Tower , with a clock and fourteen bells that chime national anthem four times a day (6am, noon, 6pm, midnight), St Basil's Cathedral , Moscow's best-known symbol with its multi-colored domes, Lenin’s Mausoleum , the resting place of the leader of the 1917 October revolution, and GUM , Moscow's oldest department store, topped with a glass roof, designed by one of Russia's most celebrated architects, Vladimir Shukhov.

A guide to shopping in Moscow

Right behind the St Basil’s it is the relatively new Zaryadye Park , designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro, famous for its work on the High Line in New York City. Zaryadye showcases flora from all the climate zones of Russia, which is the largest country in the world. The floating bridge at the edge of the park is one of the biggest selfie magnets in Moscow, providing spectacular views of the river and the city skyline as the background.

Another Zaryadye attraction is a glass pavilion that hosts restaurant Voskhod  (Sunrise) – a perfect spot for your lunch or early dinner. Voskhod focuses on dishes from all fifteen former Soviet Union republics and its inside looks like a Soviet-made spaceship with great views of the Moscow river. Try Azeri home-made pasta or trout from Lake Sevan in Armenia.

After all that walking and exploring you need some quality downtime and what better way to spend it than relaxing for a couple of hours at the famous Sanduny  traditional Russian hot bath. Make sure to get a massage with birch sticks!

You might still have time to go to Winzavod Center – a creative cluster with galleries housed at a former wine factory. Galleries like XL , pop/off/art and Ovcharenko always have something on, most likely a cutting-edge Russian contemporary art exhibition. Finish the evening hanging out at one of the best Moscow bars – try socialites’ paradise Noor Electro , co-joined with one of Moscow’s avant-garde theatres or Powerhouse Moscow , located in a 19th-century mansion, which is famous for live indie and jazz band performances. Both serve great food, too.

Young people sit on a bench looking at a large painting on the wall. It's by Russian artist Alexander Ivanov, called 'The appearance of Christ to the People' and is displayed in the Tretyakov gallery

Power up for a busy day ahead at one of Moscow’s trendiest coffee/breakfast spots,   Nude . Located in the upscale, well-heeled neighborhood of Patriarch’s Ponds, Nude offers a wide range of breakfast dishes, including scrambled eggs, toast, porridge and banana bread. Book ahead as it might be busy on a weekend morning.

After checking out the Patriarch's Ponds, which features prominently in Mikhail Bulgakov’s perennial novel The Master and Margarita , devote the rest of the morning and early afternoon to exploring Moscow’s best museums. Depending on your tastes, pick one of the following: Tretyakov Gallery for traditional Russian art, from medieval icons to the early 20th century;  New Tretyakov for 20th century and contemporary art as well as great temporary exhibitions;  Pushkin Museum for one of the greatest collections of Impressionist and post-Impressionist art in the world; and the Garage Museum for some eye-opening modern-art exhibitions.

A blurred train travelling at speed through a station with a tiled wall and a station guide.

Whichever museum or gallery you choose, be sure to go to LavkaLavka for lunch, certainly one of the best places to try new Russian cuisine, which is a contemporary reading of centuries-old recipes. It’s one of the few places to try polugar , which is, allegedly, what Russians called vodka in the 19th century.

When you talk about Russian culture, literary giants usually pop into mind: the likes of Leo Tolstoy, Fyodor Dostoevsky and Anton Chekhov. There are plenty of literary museums in Moscow, but if you had to pick one, visit Tolstoy Estate Museum , located just opposite the headquarters of Yandex, the Russian equivalent of Google. Every little detail has been restored just the way it looked when Tolstoy lived here in the 1880s–90s.

Leave some time for exploring the Moscow Metro : every station is an architectural masterpiece in its own right. Our favorites include Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya and Kievskaya. Later, unwind at one of dozens of Moscow’s craft beer places . Try  Jawsspot , named after one of the leading breweries in Russia, Jaws from the Urals region, which also serves decent pizza and salads.

Russian secrets? Here’s the ultimate Moscow itinerary

Tour architectural wonders, discover Soviet history, and savor local flavors in this gold-domed city.

Moscow is a city where the past and the future live side by side. Here you will find everything from medieval fortresses and Soviet monoliths to glass skyscrapers and innovation centers. Moscow’s spirit mirrors its uncontainable size. Muscovites, the city’s approximately 12 million residents, are always on the run, so be prepared to keep pace with their energy. Here’s how to make the most of three days in Moscow .

Day 1: Mosaics and metro stations

9 a.m. Navigate the labyrinth of the Moscow metro , a living, breathing work of art crisscrossing the metropolis. Expect marble arches and pillars, gilded mosaics, and sparkling chandeliers. Each station is unique. Some of the most beautiful stations are Kievskaya and Prospekt Mira (brown line); Mayakovskaya (dark green line); and Ploschad Revolutsii , Arbatskaya and Elektrozavodskaya (dark blue line). Getting lost on the metro is a rite of passage. However, ahead of the 2018 World Cup, most trains introduced route maps and announcements in English to make navigation easier for outsiders.

Three stations take you to Red Square, but Ploschad Revolutsii is ideal. Its platforms have numerous bronze statues of soldiers with their dogs. Locals often stop by to rub the dogs’ noses as they make a wish. ( See pictures of Moscow’s surprisingly elegant subway stations. )

9:45 a.m. Head to the iconic Red Square to see the red-bricked towers and the eastern wall of the Moscow Kremlin, Vladimir Lenin’s mausoleum, the State Historical Museum , and the psychedelically colorful domes of the St. Basil’s Cathedral . Queue early outside Lenin’s mausoleum for a spooky date with the man behind the Russian Revolution, who has rested in this tomb, preserved in chemicals, for almost 100 years .

The postcard-perfect St. Basil’s Cathedral was built in the 16th century to commemorate Tsar Ivan the Terrible’s victory over the Khanate of Kazan and the transformation of Moscow into a major center of power. Drop in for a quick visit or keep walking south towards the Moskva River and the Bolshoi Moskvaretskii Bridge for spectacular views of the Kremlin and the Red Square.

a woman in the rain in central Moscow, Russia

Another structure that will catch your eye is the golden-domed Cathedral of Christ the Savior , just southwest of the Kremlin. Unlike St. Basil’s, this Cathedral did not survive the communist persecution of religion. The original was destroyed in 1931 and the area was converted to an open-air swimming pool, the largest in the world. The fall of communism brought with it religious freedom and the Cathedral was rebuilt in the 1990s. If you turn around, you will see one of the “Seven Sisters,” the Stalinist monoliths that command Moscow’s skyline .

11:45 a.m. Head back towards the Red Square for a shopping trip at GUM (pronounced goom ), the largest department store in Russia. Much like Russia, the store has undergone many changes. Built in imperial times as a massive trading center, GUM’s Soviet-era badge of honor was being relatively better stocked than other stores. Today, it’s a glittering mall that houses Hermès and Louis Vuitton. Even if you don’t shop, the long, arched galleries and concave glass roof make it an architectural delight. Next, make your way to the third floor for Stolovaya No. 57 (Canteen No. 57), a Soviet-style restaurant with local dishes and a laid-back vibe. Try the syrniki (roughly translated as cheesecakes), buckwheat with mushroom sauce, or meat cutlets.

2 p.m. The Moscow Kremlin , the seat of the Russian Government, was built in the 15th century and houses cathedrals, museums, and unique objects from imperial Russia. Start with the Armory Chamber , a treasure trove of Fabergé eggs, imperial dresses, and gifts presented to the Tsars. Don’t miss the Diamond Fund inside the Armory where guests can marvel at the crown of Tsarina Catherine the Great.

the inside of Marinsky Theater during a ballet in Moscow, Russia

The Bolshoi Theatre hosts ballet and opera performances, including classics like Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake.

Take a stroll around Cathedral Square to admire the golden domes that mushroom from Orthodox cathedrals. Look out for the 19-foot-high bronze Tsar Bell for great photo ops. The nearby Tsar Cannon is also worth a look. Wrap up in the Kremlin Garden and see if you can spot Cosmos, the lone oak tree that was planted by Yuri Gagarin, the first man in space, two days after his extraordinary flight in April 1961 . ( Trees that traveled to space now live on Earth. Here’s where to find them. )

7 p.m. Finish your day with a ballet or opera performance at Bolshoi Theatre , one of the strongholds of Russian theatrical excellence since the 19th century. If you are lucky, you might be able to catch Tchaikovsky’s masterpiece Swan Lake on the stage where it premiered in 1877. Performances sell out so book in advance, and arrive early to enjoy the neoclassical building. Russians take theater seriously so wear your best outfit.

Day 2: Fine art and food

10 a.m. The extraordinary entrance to Tretyakov Gallery welcomes guests to Moscow’s most definitive collection of fine arts spanning almost a millennium. You can explore 12th-century icons and mosaics or get lost in the brushstrokes of 19th- and 20th-century Russian heavyweights such as Ivan Shishkin and Ilya Repin. The New Tretyakov wing showcases artists from the Soviet period.

1 p.m. Soak up some summer sun in one of Moscow’s most dynamic open spaces: Park Gorky , a hipster paradise that underwent a major makeover from a Soviet relic to the center of cultural life. Grab some food on the go or sit down for a meal at Grill Bar Zharovnya or La Boule . Wander through the open-air sculpture museum, Muzeon , the home of countless statues and symbols from the Soviet times. Muzeon runs next to the Moscow River and offers a great view of the almost 322-foot-high statue of Tsar Peter the Great.

7 p.m. One place you must dine in Moscow is White Rabbit . The restaurant, which has been featured among the top 50 in the world, owes its success to chef Vladimir Mukhin, whose culinary prowess was featured on Netflix’s Chef’s Table . White Rabbit serves Russian food with innovative twists; think sea urchin caviar and beetroot hummus. Quite fittingly, there is also rabbit on the menu. Did we mention the restaurant’s glass dome offers spectacular views of Moscow City?

Day 3: Markets and museums

10 a.m. If the Moscow Kremlin is stately, then the colorful Izmailovo Kremlin cultural center has a bit of a Disneyland feel to it. Built in 2007, Izmailovo is a great place for a stroll before bargain-hunting at Vernisazh , a flea market with stalls selling Cold War memorabilia. You will find stamps, banknotes, pins, propaganda posters, and even steel mugs from Soviet times. Score great deals on matryoshkas , Russian nesting dolls; khokhloma , hand-painted wooden handicrafts; and Baltic amber jewelry. Don’t miss contemporary twists on traditional Russian gifts, such as nesting dolls of modern politicians and music boxes shaped like Orthodox cathedrals. For a market of its popularity, Vernisazh prices are a steal and you can haggle without hesitation. Saturdays and Sundays are the best days to visit.

Russian nesting dolls in Moscow, Russia

Russian nesting dolls make the perfect souvenir, and are sold throughout Moscow, including at the Vernisazh flea market.

1 p.m. By now, you have probably got the sense that there is more to see in Moscow than time to see it. So pick what you crave most. Want more of Orthodox churches? Head to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Novodevichy Convent , which was once used by the women of the Tsar’s family. Still looking for souvenirs and gifts? Make your way to Stari Arbat (Old Arbat), a historical cobblestone street of shops and restaurants. Want to delve deeper into Russian history? Visit the State Historical Museum on the Red Square. A Cold War buff? The Bunker 42 Museum located 18 floors below Taganskaya metro was a strategic command center and an anti-nuclear shelter. A fan of Russian literature? Check out the Gogol House and the Bulgakov Museum . Want another serving of art? Try the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts or the Garage Museum .

8 p.m. End your stay in Moscow with a nice meal. Café Pushkin offers antique interiors, delicious Russian dishes, and five-star service. Even if you don’t eat here, grab a cup of the Pushkin chai, a signature Earl Grey blend with citrusy overtones. For casual fare, go to Varenichnaya (multiple locations), which has an extensive menu of Russian dishes and decor straight out of a Soviet poster. Mari Vanna (multiple locations) is another choice Russian chain.

Moscow is also a great place to try the food from other Soviet states. Head to Khachapuri to try the namesake khachapuri , Georgian stuffed-cheese bread. For authentic Uzbek plov , make a reservation at Uzbekistan . Want to keep enjoying the outdoors? Bar Strelka is a trendy spot with great views, excellent food, and a dance floor to keep the night going .
