You will also find peacocks, red-headed and white-rumped vultures, jungle fowls, babblers, woodpeckers, cuckoos and owls here.

2. Edakkal Caves

Places to Visit Edakkal Caves, Wayanad

Open from 8:30 AM to 4 PM, Edakkal caves are located on Ambukutty Mala at an altitude of 1,200 meters above sea level. This pair of caves was discovered in 1890 by Fred Fawcett and is a nice place to explore in the winter months of November to January.

For INR 20 per person and INR 40 for parking, this attraction is quite affordable if you are on a budget. The pathway through the caves is steep, so shoes with good grip are required. You will be hiking for about a kilometer and climbing around 300 steps, so a moderate level of fitness is also recommended.

There are plenty of roadside stalls nearby where you can have your breakfast before beginning your exploration or lunch after you return exhausted. But beware of the monkeys that are on the pry. The caves bear plenty of inscriptions and the petroglyphs are of particular interest to historians and archaeologists.

3. Cheengeri Hills

One of the must visit places in Wayanad during your 2-day trip is Cheengeri Hills which are only accessible until 5:30 PM. If you are a fitness enthusiast, a trek up this hill is quite attractive. There are a few stores at the starting point of this hike where you can buy some refreshments. However, if you attempt this hike at 6 AM when the trail opens, you may not find any open vendors, so it is a good idea to pack your snacks and water ahead of time.

You must pay the entry fee of INR 100 per person to go up Cheengeri Mala (where “mala” means “hill”). If you are under confident about making the climb, you can use the ropes that assist climbers along the way. The ascent is approximately 2 km. From the top, you will get a 360-degree view of the valleys around. You can also request for a guide dog at the ticket office if you wish for some canine company.

4. Phantom Rock

A short drive away from Cheengeri Mala, Phantom Rock is a naturally occurring mountain formation that can be accessed from 8 AM to 5 PM on all days of the week. This is another trek, so if you are not up for multiple hikes on the same day, you can skip one and pick the other. This sight is so named because of the shape of the rocks that resemble the head of a man. This formation is so clearly visible from various places nearby that you can also see it from Edakkal Caves.

If you happen to arrive a bit late here, you can enjoy the sunset from the top. You will find the sky bathed in various colors as the sun slowly dips into the horizon. Entry to Phantom Rock costs INR 30 per person. If you bring your motorbike along, you will need to pay the parking fee of INR 10 as well.

5. Karapuzha Dam

Karapuzha dam is an earth dam located on the Karapuzha River which is a tributary of the Kabini River. Even though the dam opened in 2004, its construction had begun in 1977. With a spillway capacity of 34,220 cubic feet per second, this dam boasts a height of 28 meters. Karapuzha Dam is spread over 3 square miles and has an active capacity of 58,371 acre feet.

There is an adventure park in the premises with attractions such as human catapult and ziplining – known to be the longest in all of Wayanad. You can also jump on the trampoline or admire the vibrant flowers in the garden or simply let your children play in the kids’ park. The rides are nominally priced and this tourism area has multiple dining options as well. If you wish to have a nice view of the lake, take a stroll along the top of the dam.

6. Chembra Peak

Places to Visit Chembra Peak, Wayanad

Begin day-2 with a visit to the highest peak of Wayanad – Chembra Peak. Located 7,000 feet above the sea level, this peak offers a sweeping view of a heart-shaped lake called ‘Hridayasarassu’ from the summit. If you visit in the monsoon, you will also find plenty of waterfalls on your way to the top. If you are unsure about finding the trail on your own, you may also hire a guide to lead you there.

It is recommended to begin your hike before 7 AM and no later than 2 PM to be able to safely make your way back down while there is still sunlight. The hike starts along tea plantations and the gentle incline gives way to steeper terrains as the trail progresses. Expect to hike for about 3 km from the base camp and prepare to have a moderate level of fitness for this trek.

The guided trek offered by the Forest Department costs INR 20 for Indian adults, INR 30 for foreigners and INR 15 for students. If you wish to take your camera along, a fee of INR 40 is applicable to Indians and INR 80 to foreigners.

7. En Ooru Village

For a journey back in time and into a bucolic culture, drive to En Ooru, which is an artificially created village. Open from 9 AM to 5 PM on all days of the week, this village is about 2 km away from the parking spot and a shared jeep can be rented for INR 30 per person or go for a private SUV for INR 50 per person for the round trip. Entry to this tribal village costs INR 50 per person and the place is equipped with a café and a restaurant as well.

Take photos inside traditional mud huts and browse through the artifacts that are exhibited at the open stalls. The hilltop view is worth boasting about, especially if you visit in the afternoon or early evening when the weather is pleasant. The huts here are of various designs and they depict the actual abode of the tribes in the region.

8. Wayanad Tea Museum

Just half an hour away from the village is Wayanad Tea Museum. This century-old museum spills all the beans about tea leaf processing and even has a tea tasting room where you can try some of the concoctions. Separate fees are applicable for the museum tour and the tea tasting.

At Wayanad Tea Museum, you will also learn about the history of tea in the country and discover the various ways of preparing tea. If you are keen on becoming a tea taster or are curious to know what they do, this is a good place to start.

Even though this list mentions only a few places to visit in Wayanad in 2 days , there is much more to see and do here. You can change your itinerary to include attractions of your liking or even better, increase the number of days in this Kerala town to enjoy the best of what Wayanad has to offer.

In spite of its scenic beauty, other attractions in Banasura Sagar Dam are trekking and Boating. But for a 2-day trip,  we could not opt trekking as it might take hours to climb up and down. Boating itself will give us a unique experience.

From the dam entrance, one has to walk about 1km to reach the boating starting point. Apparently, jeep services are also available for the visitors from the entrance to the boat station.  Speed boats as well as pedal boats are available and we have to choose. A small park is maintained by side of this station for entertaining children. Boating will take you to the small islands in the dam.

Boating time: 9AM – 5 PM

Entry fee: Rs.20 for adults and Rs. 10 for children

Boating Fee: Rs. 750 for 5 persons for the speed boat.

WHAT & WHEN TO DO IN WAYANAD

If you are leaving from Bangalore like we did you can follow this itinerary

  • Catch a bus from Shantinagar to Kalpetta. KSRTC busses available for 10 PM.
  • Arrive at Kalpetta Early morning
  • Have Breakfast at the restaurant of your choice. We had at Affas as it opened earlier.
  • Head to Chembra Peak from bus stand via local bus. Catch a bus to Meppadi .
  • In our case, Chembra peak entry was prohibited so we headed to Soochipara Falls via an auto. Costed us around Rs. 200 for the auto. Negotiations possible. Buses/Sharing autos can also be taken to reach.
  • A fellow traveler and friend had suggested us to go to Chulamalla , near chembra peak where we can enjoy a small waterfall and take a dip in the pond below if we ask the jeep drivers to take us there. However we were not able to go as we skipped Chembra.
  • Soochipara Falls had an entry cost of Rs 50-60 per person. However worth the experience as the falls were in their full glory due to the monsoons.
  • On our way out, we used a sharing auto back to reach back Meppadi.
  • From Meppadi we caught a bus to Kanthanpara falls . You can catch the local bus from Meppadi to Vaduvanchal and get down in between at Thinapuram or ask locals about which point to get down for the falls.
  • From the bus drop point, you will have to walk/take an auto for 3 kms to reach the falls.
  • The similar entry fee of Rs 50 had to be paid once again. Usually you can take a dip and enjoy swimming under the falls, however in monsoons the force is too strong and the entry to water was prohibited.
  • We once again came back to the bus drop point walking near Thinapuram and had to catch a bus to Ambalavayal .
  • For which we took the bus to Vaduvanchal and changed and sat in the bus to Amabalavayal .
  • We had a late lunch over there, before meeting our trek and camp guide from Space Travel (the group who organised camping and trekking for us)
  • At 5PM, we met them and they arranged for the jeep to head over to our base camp . The base camp had a nice villa with amazing views of the towns below. We freshened ourselves and they served us coffee.
  • At 8 PM they served us dinner and at 9 PM we started a 30 minute trek to our camping site on the hill.
  • All the equipment including flash lights were provided by them.
  • We were guided by Ajmal (The representative and guide from the space travel group) to the hill named Ponmudikotta. It was a public place which can be accessed by anyone, however since it was a night trek, we needed the help of a guide to travel safely and set up our tents.
  • We retired in our camps for the day, it was too damp to have a campfire.

wayanad trip plan for 2 days

  • The sunrise from the hill is a well known site so we woke up to some amazing views.
  • In the morning we did a short trek nearby to a cave and to get some good sites.
  • We trekked back to the base in the morning and had our refreshments and breakfast .
  • Post which the jeep dropped us back to Ambalavayal .
  • The edekkal caves can be visited from there as they are very near to the camp site.
  • We skipped them and headed straight to Banasura Sagar dam for the day.
  • Take a bus from “Kalpetta new bus stand” a bus to Padinjarathara .
  • After reaching, we walked to the dam from the bus drop point as the weather was pleasant.
  • The dam offers some spectacular views, however the main reason for our visit was the speed boat ride.
  • The tickets for the boating are open till 3PM only so reach before that.
  • The boating is stopped during rains, but continues when the rain stops.
  • We had to wait almost an hour for the rain to subside so we can enjoy the boat ride.
  • The speed boat ride costs Rs. 900 per ride. Max persons allowed in a ride is 5. It is worth the money
  • We got stuck in the rain after the boat ride so we waited for it to subside. We caught a bus back to Kalpetta for our evening bus back to Bangalore.

All the locations visited above are pinned on this map in the order of our visit : Locations on Google Maps

We had initially planned a three day trip and wanted to explore few more spots. However with the continuous rain and our camping experience, we were quite satisfied so we headed back that same night.

The Edakkal caves are one of the most fascinating places to see in Wayanad. It is definitely one of the top places to Visit in Wayanad in 2 Days. The stories, facts, and myths that surround these enigmatic caves are as thrilling as the trek to the Edakkal caves. The Edakkal caves are actually rock shelters formed naturally high up in the Ambukuthi Hills of Wayanad. The Edakkal caves are situated at a height of 1200 meters and are accessed by a mini trek that takes you first up a steep road followed by a short rocky path and finally a climb up a series of steep stairs to finally descend into the main rock shelter. Inside the rock shelter, one can see the signs of Man from a pre-historic settlement dating to the Neolithic period around 6000 BCE. The petroglyphs which are fairly well preserved depict different geometrical shapes, people, and animals.

The Edakkal Caves were accidentally discovered in the year 1895 by one Fred Fawcett who was the Superintendent of Police of the Malabar District at that time. On a hunting expedition, he stumbled upon the caves.

In the year 2018, heavy rains and landslides resulted in a rock falling in the caves. The Caves were closed to the public for some time and re-opened later. There are concerns regarding the fragile caves and how they could be affected by the influx of tourists and there is a move to restrict the numbers visiting Edakkal Caves.

What a beautiful place to visit! Not going to lie I had to look up the location! I think the waterfalls and especially wildlife safaris is where you’d find me! Love the lush and greenery!

Thank you. Wayanad is not world-famous, so it’s expected that you might not know about it.

I wasn’t familiar with this place, glad you included a map. My husband and I love to hike so I’m intrigued with that. Thanks for opening my eyes to a new place! Saving for future reference.

wayanad trip plan for 2 days

The tea estates are high on my list and now I need to add spice plantations. The smaller owned plantations would be ideal to see the entire process, without crowds of people. The map really helps demonstrate how far apart everything is.

Thanks Jen. Hope you visit the tea gardens of India soon!

What an incredible itinerary. Amazing how just three short days can give you such a wonderful diverse experience.

Thanks Karen. I read and dream a lot about slow travel but unfortunately most working professionals like us don’t have the luxury of time. These short weekend trips are what keeps our wanderlust spirit alive.

Is coffee and tea from India that different from the once in europe`?

I have to admit, that I have never even heard of this place :O Shame on me, but I give a great thanks for the education 🙂

Thanks Ann. There are many treasures of India that people are unaware of. Nothing to be ashamed of. As far as I know the best quality tea and coffee produced in India are exported to the West because they are way too expensive for Indian markets.

India is really starting to grow on me, I am getting more and more intrigued. And to be honest, if I could afford one more, longer trip in 2020, it would probobly be to India 🙂

This looks like the type of place to slow travel your way through. I like the idea of using homestays to explore this part of the world, but how to you find out where they are. Is there a website that lists them all?

Hi Jay, The homestays for Wayanad can be searched on the Indian hotel booking sites like MakeMyTrip.com or even on HotelsCombined. Makemytrip has separate category for homestays.

Thank you for sharing so much helpful information Sinjana! This looks like a beautiful area. I love the idea of a homestay on a coffee plantation. That would be so interesting to learn and connect with the farmers. The waterfall looks gorgeous. So many things to do in this area. It would be hard to narrow down choices. I can see why you’d want to stay for at least a few days.

Thanks Nancy. This is a beautiful part of India. You must visit if you are travelling to India

Wayanad 2 Days Backpacking Trip – Bangalore

  • Group Size: 8 - 12

wayanad trip plan for 2 days

Hello travelers!

Nestled among the mountains of the western ghats, Wayanad is one of the loveliest hill stations of southern India. There are many good things about Wayanad like full of greenery, misty mountains, wildlife sanctuaries, lakes, dams, waterfalls, tea estates, coffee estates, historical caves, panoramic views, and top of it all – pleasant climate most of the year. With its rich flora and fauna, Wayanad is part of the Nilgiris Biosphere Reserve. Wayanad is actually a large district that has varying altitudes between 700 meters and 2100 meters above sea level, which will appear in its climate as you pass by.

Well, if Wayanad is so big, then where all are we heading to? To start with, we will explore Edakkal caves that are home to one of the oldest human settlements with their rock engravings of the pre-historic era as proof. This hike of 45 mins will be a nice warm-up for our trip. A pleasant view from the top of the caves will compensate for any loss of energy.

Places like Karlad lake and Banasura Sagar dam are the tourist attractions we will tick off. Banasura is believed to be the largest earthen dam in the country. It’s always a serene experience spending time in front of such a huge water body, especially waiting for the sunset. The icing on the cake is the view of the huge Banasura hill in the backdrop. For those who are interested, Karlad Lake has a Boating option too.

An offbeat place called 900-Kandi, a pretty little secret of Wayanad which is not usually thronged by trekkers is next in our list. It is a lush green forest accompanied by grand views of rolling hills, making it ideal for trekking. There are some jeeps ferrying people up and down. Close to 900 Kandi is Wayanad’s longest Zipline and Skycycle adventure activities conducted at a private tea estate. Weather permits, travelers can indulge in these adventures.

Overall, Wayanad has many out-of-ordinary places, which we will run-into on this backpacking trip.

It’s time to travel Wayanad. It’s time to savor this wonderful hill station.

Highlights of the trip:

  • Soochipara Waterfalls
  • Edakkal Caves exploration
  • Banasura Sagar visit
  • Karlad Lake
  • The thrills of 900-Kandi deep forest
  • Tea Estate nature walk
  • Longest Zipline & Skycycle (if available)
  • Campfire with Music
  • Authentic Wayanad food
  • Beautiful hill top stay
  • Travel (Tempo traveler, Non AC)
  • Stay (Dorms on sharing basis at a beautiful hilltop property)
  • Food: 2 Breakfasts, 1 Dinner (Veg and Non-veg)
  • Jeep ride for 900 Kandi
  • Entry charges for Karlad, Soochpara, Banasura, Edakkal Caves
  • Experience all places mentioned in the Highlights section
  • Campfire (if it doesn’t rain) with group activities
  • Trip Leader(s)
  • Lunches, Dinner on Day 2
  • Boating, 900 Kandi Glass Bridge entry, Zipline/Skycycle (if available) and/or any other special activities
  • Any misc. expenses not mentioned in the inclusions above

Day 0 - Onward journey to Wayanad!

  • Start from Bangalore, an overnight journey to Wayanad of Kerala.

Day 1 - Edakkal Caves, Banasura Sagar, Karlad Lake, Night stay

  • Cross Karnataka-Kerala border and head towards mountains of Wayanad.
  • Freshen up and fuel up with authentic Kerala Breakfast.
  • Drive to Edakkal Caves base point, climb up, explore stone age carvings and enjoy a nice view from the top.
  • Visit very pretty Karlad Lake and spend some quality time.
  • Have Lunch at a local restaurant near Karlad. Note that food options are limited at this place.
  • Give an evening visit to Banasura Sagar Dam, explore the beautiful setting of Banasura mountain in the middle of Western Ghats
  • Reach our homestay located in an amazing hilltop setting by late evening, refresh with Tea.
  • Bonfire with music between 8 to 10 PM (weather permits). After this, we have to respect nature in Wayanad and enjoy our social gathering by sharing stories and playing games.
  • Hot dinner served in the cold climate.
  • Rest for the night in your assigned beds.

Day 2 - Soochipara Waterfalls, 900 Kandi exploration, Longest Zipline(Optional)

  • Freshen up, go around the Tea Estate for a nature walk early in the morning and click some pictures.
  • Have Breakfast, pack your bags, check out of our homestay.
  • Take a journey towards Soochipara waterfalls that has a pool at the base of the falls. We need to walk about a kilometer inside the forest to reach falls. Take a well deserved dip in the falls, if allowed by forest authorities at that time based on the flow of water and climate conditions.
  • Note: There is a Forest Department limit of 1200 tourists to visit Soochipara falls per day. Everyone must stand in queue and take tickets. That’s why we are going here first. If the ticket counter closes by the time we reach there, we cannot help it.
  • (Optional) Visit Wayanad’s Longest Zipline & Skycycle adventure zone. Interested travelers may indulge in these adventure activities if they are open based on weather conditions.
  • Note: There is a limit to number of tickets for Zipline/Skycycle. Usually it’s very crowded over the weekend and we might not get required tickets. We cannot help it as they don’t give preference to anyone.
  • Note: On rainy days, the local authorities might stop these adventure activities and we cannot help it again. Because of above 2 reasons, we made this as an optional activity.
  • Finish quick Lunch at a local restaurant on the way.
  • Head towards 900-Kandi which is in deep forest. Plenty of jeeps ferry tourists up and down over here. This jeep ride is already included in the trip cost. Interested folks may visit the famous (but overrated) Wayanad glass bridge that protrudes into the valley.
  • Say Bye to Wayanad, start back towards Bangalore, stop for a Tea/Coffee break, reach home by night (around 10PM to 12AM) based on traffic conditions in Bangalore.
  • Note: We may not stop for Dinner as our drops may get delayed post midnight. So it is advised to keep munching snacks.

IDF fires artillery shells into Gaza as fighting between Israeli troops and Islamist Hamas militants continues on Oct. 12, 2023.

Middle East crisis — explained

The conflict between Israel and Palestinians — and other groups in the Middle East — goes back decades. These stories provide context for current developments and the history that led up to them.

Israel cancels high-level talks in Washington after cease-fire vote clears the U.N.

The United Nations Security Council meets on the situation in the Middle East, including the war in Gaza, at U.N. headquarters in New York on Monday.

JERUSALEM — The United Nations Security Council has voted 14-0 in favor of a resolution demanding a cease-fire in Gaza for the rest of Ramadan. The United States abstained from the vote, clearing the way for the measure to pass.

The U.S. decision to abstain drew a swift response from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who cancelled a visit by an Israeli delegation that had been set to travel to Washington, D.C., for talks on Israel's planned military operation in Rafah, in southern Gaza.

"Prime Minister Netanyahu made it clear last night that if the US withdraws from its principled position, he will not send the Israeli delegation to the US. In light of the change in the American position, Prime Minister Netanyahu decided that the delegation would not go," the prime minister's office said in a statement.

State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said Netanyahu's statement was "a bit surprising and unfortunate."

The U.S. abstention was seen as a sign of a growing rift between the two close allies. Washington is urging Israel not to launch an offensive in Rafah — where more than a million Palestinians are sheltering. Israel says it has to go in to destroy remaining Hamas battalions there.

The high-level delegation, led by Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer and National Security Advisor Tzachi Hanegbi, was due to meet with Biden administration officials to hear U.S. concerns over the Rafah operation and discuss an alternative strategy.

Despite the cancellation, a planned visit by the Israeli defense minister, Yoav Gallant, continued. Gallant was in Washington on Monday to meet with Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin and National Security Adivser Jake Sullivan.

What this resolution says

The cease-fire resolution calls for the immediate, unconditional release of all hostages taken captive by Hamas during the Oct. 7 attack on Israel that killed 1,200 people. Israel's military offensive in Gaza in response to the attack has killed more than 32,000 Palestinians, according to the Gaza Ministry of Health.

Ramadan is set to end in just over two weeks, on April 9, so if any cease-fire does manifest from the vote it may only be short-lived.

Monday's vote followed several failed attempts by the Security Council at brokering a cease-fire resolution — including one as recently as three days ago.

The U.S. had supported calls for a cease-fire only if they were directly connected to the release of some 130 hostages still in captivity under a deal being negotiated by diplomats from four nations.

"This resolution further explicitly recognizes the painstaking, non-stop negotiations being conducted by the Governments of Egypt, Israel, Qatar, and the United States to achieve such a release in the context of a ceasefire, which would also create space to surge more lifesaving humanitarian assistance for Palestinian civilians, and to build something more enduring," said Secretary of State Antony Blinken in a statement.

But because the final text of the resolution did not include "key language we view as essential, notably a condemnation of Hamas, we could not support it," Blinken added.

U.S Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield is now urging Security Council members to put pressure on Hamas to accept a deal being negotiated in Doha.

There's already 'catastrophic' hunger in Gaza. Who decides when to call it a 'famine?'

Goats and Soda

There's already 'catastrophic' hunger in gaza. who decides when to call it a 'famine'.

"We're getting closer to a deal for an immediate cease-fire with the release of all hostages, but we're not there yet," said Thomas-Greenfield after the vote.

National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby was adamant that the vote did not reflect a change in U.S. policy.

"We have been clear and we've been consistent in our support for a cease-fire as part of a hostage deal," Kirby said on a call after the vote with reporters. He reiterated that because the final text did not include a condemnation of Hamas for the Oct. 7 attacks, the U.S. abstained rather than voting in favor of the resolution.

"It seems like the prime minister's office is choosing to create a perception of daylight here when they don't need to do that," Kirby said.

He added, "Of course we still have Israel's back."

Representatives for Hamas and Israeli are still in Qatar for indirect negotiations over a cease-fire, but remain far apart on several details.

Blinken urges Netanyahu not to attack Rafah as cease-fire resolution fails at the U.N.

Blinken urges Netanyahu not to attack Rafah as cease-fire resolution fails at the U.N.

Hamas said it welcomed the call from the Security Council for an immediate cease-fire, but called on the international body to pressure Israel to adhere to the cease-fire and stop the war.

U.N. Secretary General Antonio Guterres said, "This resolution must be implemented. Failure would be unforgivable."

Jaclyn Diaz reported from Jerusalem. Michele Kelemen reported from Washington, D.C.
