England's tour of India will be their toughest challenge yet, says Steven Finn

England have named uncapped spin pair Tom Hartley and Shoaib Bashir in their squad; You can follow England's five-Test series across Sky Sports' digital platforms with live blogs and reports.

Steven Finn believes England's tour of India will be their toughest challenge yet and remains adamant "superhuman" James Anderson has still got plenty to give.

Finn was part of the England side that toured India 12 years ago under Alastair Cook's captaincy where spin duo Graeme Swann and Monty Panesar starred in the momentous 2-1 series triumph.

India have not lost a home Test series since England's win nine years ago and Finn believes the result of the series starting later this month will show how far the team has come under under Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum's leadership.

"There's no doubt this is the toughest challenge an England team can face," the former England seam bowler told Sky Sports . "I think it's really a true mark of where a team is at, when you go to India and you've the conditions up against you.

Finn played alongside Anderson in the third Test in 2012 when England won by seven wickets.

More than a decade later, 41-year-old Anderson, who has 690 Test wickets, remains part of the England set up as they jet off to India.

England's James Anderson (Associated Press)

"Jimmy is superhuman. People have been anticipating he will retire for about seven years now and he keeps surprising people and performing," Finn said of the Lancashire seamer, who has 34 wickets and boasts an average of 29.32 from 13 Tests in India.

"He didn't have a fantastic summer last year but from knowing him as a character, he wouldn't be doing this unless he felt he could make a difference.

"A determined Jimmy Anderson is someone who will be important to England, especially making the most of the reverse swing because he is an absolute master at that.

"He would have trained hard, he has got the skills and has got the experience so I anticipate when he plays, he'll be an important cog."

Mohammed Siraj stars for India as he takes 6-15

England are arriving only three days before the first Test in Hyderabad on January 25 after spending 10 days at a training camp in Abu Dhabi. In 2012, they played three warm-up fixtures before the series began.

"If someone had offered Andy Flower three days preparation before a Test series, his head would have exploded," said Finn.

England's captain Alastair Cook, left, and his Indian counterpart Mahendra Singh Dhoni, unveils the trophy ahead of their Test tour in 2012

"There are a couple of caveats: Times have changed, clearly. We don’t even go to an Ashes and have three warm-up games now, like we did on my first tour in 2010/11. And you play those three matches as close to the intensity of a Test match as you can, which served those teams well at the time.

"We won in 2012 and we won the Ashes in 2010/11. But I do think we encounter problems with the warm-up games on that tour a bit because on that 2012 tour they played six 70mph medium pacers and no spinners and it didn’t replicate what you were going to find in the Test matches.

"It’s very hard to question this management team because every time we have over the last 18 months or so, they’ve dumbfounded everything we’ve thought of their decisions."

It will be the first Test England will play without Stuart Broad after the bowler retired from all formats of the game last year.

England have chosen to gamble with their squad by selecting the uncapped pair of Somerset off-spinner Shoaib Bashir, 20, and 24-year-old Lancashire slow left-armer Tom Hartley.

Jack Leach, along with Rehan Ahmed, will form part of England's quadruple spin attack and returns to the side after injury ruled him out of the 2023 Ashes.

Nasser Hussain and Michael Atherton

Finn remains confident the two potential Test debutants will thrive under Stokes and McCullum's leadership.

"Tom Hartley and Shoaib Bashir have clearly been picked for a reason," he said. "They're both tall, they both bowl relatively quick and they should have good control because they're finger spinners.

"It's going to be tough for them. But if there is an environment where they could succeed, I think this England team is the one."

Stokes and McCullum have harnessed an enticing style of Test cricket that has led to some incredible success over the past few years and left ex-players like Finn and Graeme Swann wishing they played under this leadership.

Nasser Hussain discusses pitches

"I was very fortunate, I played 126 games for England but you look at the way this team sets up and the way they play and me at my absolute peak, around 2012, early-2013, looks at this team and thinks you could have really been made to feel part of something," Finn reflected.

"Looking at this team from the outside and hearing how much fun it is to play for and the attitude towards going out there on the pitch, it’s one I would have loved to be involved in when I was at my peak.

"In this environment, you're encouraged to be yourself. The biggest challenge when you go and play international cricket is that you're encouraged to be someone that you’re not."

Speaking after the second round of fixtures to use the Kookaburra, Key shared his view that using a less bowler-friendly ball than the traditional Dukes had brought out the requisite skills for Test cricket by increasing the volume of spin bowling, rewarding seamers who have extra pace, and allowing batters to go big when set.

“I think it’s been fantastic,” said Key. “You see what four-day cricket is meant to be. I’ve watched quite a bit this week and seen some bloody good cricket. I would use the Kookaburra all the time. English cricket would be much better off for it.”

All nine matches in the second round ended in draws for only the third time in history, it should be noted, while Essex beating Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge in their opening fixture remains the one positive result from the 18 so far. The Kookaburra, which has a less prominent seam and goes softer earlier, has clearly been a significant factor.

Indeed, while batting averages have been higher in April in recent years, it has been a veritable feast to start the 2024 season, with 44.49 runs per wicket the highest figure in a month since September 1938. Ten scores of 150 or more were made in round two – a record for a single set of championship fixtures starting on the same day. Across the four Kookaburra rounds in the past two years there have been 39.54 runs scored per wicket, compared with 31.79 in 12 Dukes ball rounds in 2023.

Key said: “The weather has got in the way at times and seven of those nine matches [in round two] could have seen a result. But county cricket is meant to go four days. This week has shown it’s rewarding the right type of players. Cricket is about watching pace bowlers, spinners and really good batting. Four days is about the journey.”

After the move was recommended in 2022 by Andrew Strauss’s high performance review , this is the second season to have the Kookaburra deployed. Two rounds last year have increased to four this summer, with the Kookaburra returning for rounds 12 and 13 in September. Key pushed for half of the season but, despite agreement at a meeting of director’s of cricket, the counties came back with a compromise.

The deployment of spin has increased. Slow bowlers sent down 37% of deliveries in the first two rounds, compared with 17% in the equivalent rounds last year. Key has noted early succes

Kasey Aldridge, with eight wickets at the Oval for Somerset, and Zaman Akhter, with six for Gloucestershire against Yorkshire, including Joe Root and Harry Brook, were among the seamers to catch Key’s eye in the latest round, having “run in with a bit of pace”. The England team director noted Sam Cook’s 10-wicket match for Essex at Trent Bridge, a welcome namecheck for a player who has 199 championship wickets at 16.84 since 2019.

“The pitches are slow this time of year but watching medium pacers is a waste of time,” said Key. “Teams need to find quicker bowlers or ones who will force a wicket. You can’t just keep running up bowling at 75mph. And in terms of those guys who are not express, you really work out who can bowl. Sam Cook, that was seriously impressive what he did.”

It has been particularly hard going for Middlesex, who have shipped 1,203 runs for just 11 wickets in two matches. At Edgbaston, where the groundsman, Gary Barwell, says he produced the same pitch in terms of grass and rolling as round two last year, a couple of England hopefuls in Matt Potts (none for 106 from 23 overs) and Brydon Carse (none for 128 from 19) struggled as Warwickshire racked up 698 for three declared against Durham.

Key said: “That looked a turgid [slow] pitch but [Potts and Carse] are much better equipped for international cricket than if they bowled on English snakepits with a Dukes ball moving all over the place. The best bowlers come from the flattest pitches.

“ Why do we think in India their batters come into the Test side averaging 70 [in the Ranji Trophy]? Do you think they’re playing with a little nibbly Dukes ball where it’s doing all sorts? What do we want to be? I want us to be the best team in the world for a generation; this will be one way to do that.”

Potts, who underlined the difference by shutting down the Edgbaston match with an unbeaten 149 as nightwatchman, said he had no issues with further use of the Kookaburra but did make the point that spring conditions, chiefly moist outfields, negate one of the skills the Australian ball will teach bowlers: reverse swing.

Sunil Gavaskar's fiery message to BCCI amid IPL 2024 batting carnages: 'It's not exciting... bowlers are suffering'

Sunil gavaskar nearly lost his calm on air as he reckoned that the “bowlers are suffering” amid the rising 200-plus totals in ipl..

IPL 2024 has been a batter's season. In just 35 matches so far, 15 times has the 200-run marl been breached, five of which which went past 250. Sunrisers Hyderabad, who have been the most explosive batting unit, have scored three of those totals, one of which was on display at the Arun Jaitley Stadium against Delhi Capitals on Saturday. Despite the batting carnages, while South Africa legend Dale Steyn sees it as an opportunity for bowlers to stand out with economical shows, former India captain Sunil Gavaskar sent a fiery message to BCCI calling for protection of bowlers.

Sunil Gavaskar wants BCCI to protect the bowlers amid batting carnages in IPL 2024

On Saturday, SRH clobbered 266/7 in 20 overs, of which 125 runs were scored in the powerplay with Travis Head leading the charge with his 16-ball 50 en route to 89 off just 32 balls.

Amid the batting assault from SRH, who hold the record for the two highest team totals in IPL history, both notched up this season, Gavaskar was left vexed on air as he made a suggestion to the BCCI on how the bowlers can be protected.

Speaking to fellow India legend Anjum Chopra, Gavaskar said that that boundary ropes can be pushed a little more back, especially at smaller venues, as he pointed out the gap between the advertisement board and the fence where where the stands begin.

“I wouldn't suggest any changes to a cricket bat because they are all within regulations, but I have been saying this for a long time, increase the size of the boundary at every ground. Look at this ground today, there is enough space to take it back a little more by a couple of metres. It can often prove to be the difference between a catch and a sixer. You can push that LED or advertisement boards even further so that the boundary rope can go back by 2-3 metres and that will make a difference. Otherwise, the bowlers are the only ones who will suffer,” he said.

Nearly losing his calm, the former India batter reckoned that while the power-hitting in T20 cricket might be exciting to watch, it tends to get boring eventually, implying at the lack of contest between batters and bowlers.

“What we have been seeing in T20 cricket over the last few days is that this is batting like the coach tells in the nets, 'This is the last round,' and everybody starts swinging their bat around bang, bang whether they get out or not. It's enjoyable to a little extent, but after that it gets...not so exciting. I wanted to use a stronger word, but no,” he added.
