What is the story of AIDA?

AIDA is the tale of an Ethiopian princess kidnapped and enslaved to the Egyptian princess Amneris. Both are in love with the Egyptian General Radames, but Aida holds his heart.

When Egypt and Ethiopia go to war again, Radames leads his army to victory so he can be rewarded with the thing he desires most - freedom for Aida.

Aida’s father is captured and Aida is now torn between her love for Radames and her love for her father and homeland. Forced by her father to aid his escape, Aida tricks Radames into revealing military secrets and  the General is tried as a traitor.

Amneris offers to save him if he will marry her but he refuses and is sentenced to entombment. Aida, choosing to be with him forever asks to share his fate and the lovers are reunited for all time.

Ellen Kent’s Aida UK Tour

aida uk tour

Ellen Kent has announced a new spectacular interpretation of Verdi’s classic opera Aida with international soloists, chorus and full orchestra.

Aida will star French Soprano Olga Perrier as Aida and Liza Kadeinik, the celebrated mezzo from the Romanian National Opera as Amneris.

Aida, the grandest of all Ellen Kent’s operas, returns  in Autumn 2016 to the UK with a stunning new traditional production, boasting an impressive new set built by Set-Up Scenery in the UK, who also build sets for the Royal Opera Covent Garden.

In Aida, the splendour of Egypt is set against the grandeur of the Coliseum of Rome with Ellen Kent’s direction influenced by the ancient Greek dramas of Euripides and symbolising the powerful religious hold of the priests of Egypt. This tragic story of war, jealousy and revenge at whose heart is the doomed love of the beautiful Ethiopian slave girl, Aida, and the Egyptian hero, Radames, is brought to life in a production set against one of the greatest pieces of music Verdi ever wrote with the well known arias “Celeste Aida”, “Ritorna Vincitor” and the great chorus piece the ‘Triumphal March’ featuring a temple dance, cascades of glittering gold and amazing fire performers.

Aida is sung in Italian with English surtitles. Running time approximately 3 hours and 13 minutes including 2 intervals.

Review: FASCINATING AIDA: 40TH ANNIVERSARY SHOW, London Palladium

The UK can’t claim too many music groups with the impressive longevity or sheer depravity of Fascinating Aïda.

pixeltracker

Best known for Youtube hit “Cheap Flights” and the deliciously unsubtle “Dogging”, this tour has more than enough jolly singalongs to go along with those fan favourites. The current lineup of Dillie Keane , Adèle Anderson and Liza Pulman (here accompanied by Michael Roulston ) have been together for around twenty years (barring a short spell when Sarah- Louise Young filled Pulman’s shoes).

Their confidence and synergy shines through whether they are gathered around a piano, throwing shapes around the stage to hip hop-inspired “Down With The Kids” or robot-dancing as they bemoan modern technology in the Kraftwerkesque “AI”.

Four decades on, their macabre humour echoes that of Tom Lehrer ; while the Sixties satirist gleefully considered the prospect of poisoning pigeons in the park , Keane and company sing about persuading their frail parent to jump on a plane to Dignitas (“Mother, Dear Mother”), the downsides of inviting the recently bereaved to social events (“Widow”) and - through near-immobile faces - the extremes some go to to stay looking young (“The Enemy Of Beauty”).

It’s hard to think of any musical group which revels so much in the zeitgeist. They merrily rip up the rule book on touring in the third age: acts like the Rolling Stones, The Beach Boys and Elton John lean heavily on hits from their first couple of decades, but Fascinating Aïda largely abandon their early back catalogue to focus on ever-new ways to expose and ridicule the vagaries of modern society, be it the hoary chestnut of citizenship tests or ripped-from-the-headlines comments on Saltburn and Barbie’s Oscar nominations. Their latest Bulgarian song cycle (a riff on The Mikado ’s Little List) takes aim at the post office scandal, Michelle Mone, David Cameron ’s peerage and (perhaps with a nod to Lehrer’s “ Pollution ”) the effect of Brexit laws on water quality.

Like Lehrer, they use jaunty tunes to underscore political messages that make Billy Bragg look like Michael McIntyre . These ladies don’t sit on the fence: one song begins with the lines “If you want to do something good today/Assassinate Trump/He makes a big target/Out there on the stump”. Meanwhile, the operatic “ A Tory MP ” rattles through a recipe of sorts for a Conservative politician and sums it up memorably with the final refrain of “c*nt c*nt c*nt c*nt c*nt c*nt c*nt” before a picture of Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is pulled from a mixing bowl.

There are some softer songs too: the soulful “Old Home” hits hard with its tale of leaving a beloved house behind. In general, though, Fascinating Aïda are not for the faint of heart or the easily offended; their show in Buxton saw someone storm off from the front row mid-song. For those who enjoy being joyfully outraged and politically engaged, this show is an utter treat.

Fascinating Aïda continue at London Palladium until 6 February and then are on tour around the UK .

AIDA

  • Thursday 03 Apr / 2025 Door: 18:00

London is hosting the biggest opera production it’s seen this century, as a groundbreaking performance of Verdi’s AIDA plays three performances only at OVO Arena Wembley in April 2025.

A stunning, spectacular event, AIDA brings to life Verdi’s timeless tale of love and betrayal set in Ancient Egypt.

The innovative staging combines modern technology including breath-taking digital projections and  huge-scale puppetry with the beauty and drama of operatic tradition at an unparalleled scale.

Performed in Italian with surtitles, this magnificent production of Verdi’s tragic opera AIDA is the story of an Ethiopian princess (Aida) who was been kidnapped years before and taken to Egypt, there she falls in love with General Radames, who is also loved by the Egyptian princess, Amneris, who Aida serves. When Radames is chosen to lead another war with Ethiopia the  battle between Aida’s love for the General and her country come to the fore. Against the backdrop of impending conflict and embedded loyalty, emotions and allegiances are tested to breaking point leading to tragic consequences.

The scale of the production is unsurpassed with 250 performers including internationally renowned soloists and the specially commissioned 60-piece Hanseatic Symphony Orchestra. A cyclorama 72sqm screen creates an immersive experience with the venue infused with a perfume to give the imagined scent of the lotus blossoms, pine trees, spices, and the waters of the Nile.   578 stunning costumes and surround sound complete the spectacle with superb choreography creating a 692 square metre fabric River Nile that flows into the audience.

It is an experience you’ll not want to miss.

Opera Scotland

Aïda 2023 dnipro opera (ukrainian national opera), read more about the opera aïda.

The city of Dnipro has suffered several bombardments during the Russian invasion of Ukraine so while it may seem surprising that members of their opera company should be able to escape abroad for an extensive tour.  However they were very welcome and received the same enthusiastic reception that all Ukrainian artists have had recently.

The visit extends throughout the UK from Thursday, 9 February to Wednesday, 5 April.  The repertoire is familiar, with 24 performances of Madama Butterfly , 18 of Carmen and just 5 of Aïda .  Scotland sees two of the latter (Ayr and Perth) and four of Butterfly (Ayr, Hamilton, Dunfermline and Dundee) between Wednesday 14 and Monday 20 February.

The Perth Aïda was a thoroughly enjoyable performance which fitted neatly into the concert hall which has the useful feature of an orchestra pit, leaving the stage for singers to spread out in.  The sets were surprisingly impressive - a group of adjustable platforms with a number of backcloths that provided realistic period features and clever perspectives.

The compact chorus sang well in their large-scale scenes in the first half, while the soloists came into their own from the Nile scene onwards.  There were a few cuts to the music which shortened the evening, no doubt to reduce the dance requirements as well as to improve convenience for long distance travellers.  Production photos indicate that the whole scale of the evening could be 'beefed-up' at larger venues.

An irritating factor was the absence of any cast lists for this specific evening.  The programme gave ten photos of the leading soloists on the tour to make it possible to identify some of the soloists.  With only five performances of this opera during the tour it was hardly surprising that only Single performers were listed for Radames, Ramfis, Amonasro and Messenger.  Two were listed for the title role as well as  Amneris and three of those four ladies took turns as the Priestess in the temple scene, unusually onstage in full view.  The only real issue with identification came with the King, where two singers were listed, both chorus members, who did not feature in the photo page.

As with the previous visits by Ukrainian performers, usually under Ellen Kent's management, the singers generally displayed well-schooled voices, while acting abilities varied but were at least competent. A highlight of the evening came at the end of the curtain-calls.  Two stage-crew unfurled the Ukrainian flag behind the line-up of performers and the company launched into a rousing rendering of the Ukrainian anthem - an emotion-packed and loudly-cheered event for all in the building.

A surprise is the fact that a second Ukrainian company, from the opera house at Kyiv, was also tourng the country at this time.  They were under the familiar management team of Ellen Kent and Senbla.  The Scottish dates in the central belt - Edinburgh (10 & 11 February) and Glasgow (16 & 17 April).  A disappointing lack of co-ordination appears from the fact that the operas on display are, again, Aïda and Madama Butterfly .

Fascinating Aida

40 GLORIOUS YEARS!

London palladium dates announced feb 2024.

aida uk tour

Hello!, it’s been a while since we’ve pestered you so forgive me if this is a longish one. I’ll start with the Big News so that if you get bored halfway through, it doesn’t matter if you don’t read to the end.

THE VERY BIGGEST NEWS

Fascinating Aïda hit the grand old age of 40 in March. We were meant to have a party to celebrate but for reasons which will be apparent as you read on (haha, gotcha!), a party was hard to organise. So how’s that for longevity! If Adèle and I are the Mick and Keith of the cabaret world, that makes Liza the Ronnie Wood.

aida uk tour

THE NEXT BIGGEST NEWS

To celebrate this fact, Fascinating Aïda will be heading off on tour on 5th September with a freshly minted show! That’s a clever way of saying it’s not entirely new, but you will have to read on (gotcha again!) to find out how new.

We kick off in glamorous Camberley, of which my Auntie Betty had such happy tales. As usual we will be schlepping around the country in our merry charabanc, the Jaymobile, which transmogrifies into Bar Jaimondo by night… ooh! Check our tour dates on the website here. THE NEXT ALMOST BIGGER THAN ANYTHING NEWS

People keep asking us about London dates. You’ll have to wait till February 2024, I fear, when we hit The London Palladium!  We have appeared upon the hallowed stage before – Liza was there in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang! for many a moon, and the Dame and I were in a couple of Hysteria! concerts raising money for AIDS. But never in our own show so that’s nice.

NEXT GROUP NEWS

Because Miss Pulman has been scooting around the country doing various of her own shows (read on for more information, haha!), she wasn’t able to join the Dame and I a couple of weeks ago for a fortnight of seclusion and song writing. We did get quite a bit of writing done – the Dame says it’s four songs, I say it’s three and a bit. (The “bit” needs a ton of work…). So there will be new material mixed in with old favourites!  And we will be joining up again in the summer for MORE WRITING!

Our wonderful director, Paul Foster, came up and we had a long working lunch… When he heard some of the new stuff and some of the old stuff we were suggesting, he didn’t look depressed at all!  So that was encouraging.

SLIGHTLY LESS IMPORTANT NEWS BECAUSE IT’S ABOUT THE SOLO STUFF AND IN STRICTLY ALPHABETICAL ORDER…

aida uk tour

Dame Adèle Anderson did a couple of shows at the Pheasantry called CONTRADICTIONS which was really really clever, funny and super-entertaining. Not at all surprising as she is a great mass of contradictions in her own right. Dean Austin played a blinder upon the old Joanna and it was a classic evening of great cabaret.

Dr. Dillie Keane also did a few shows at the Pheasantry in the Kings Road called SONGS MY MOTHER WOULD HAVE HATED and as she is the author of this newsletter, she can only say that she was happy to survive and no-one asked for their money back or threw pizzas.

Miss Liza Pulman, aka the Madame de Stael of South Cornwall, has been gadding about doing lots of her own shows in posh venues and also some shows with Joe Stilgoe… wooooooooo!  There’s fancy!  Reports have been terrific, though she was felled by Covid and had to cancel one. Bah.

Mr Michael Roulston, our fabulous Musical Director and Pianist Extraordinaire, continues to work all day, all night, in his sleep and, possibly, even when he is under sedation at the dentist. That’s ‘cause everyone wants him because he’s brilliant.

In other news, for those of you who don’t know, we’ve had a few very sad losses. Most recently, Liza’s mother, Barbara Young, died. She was in her early 90s and health issues had started to overwhelm her, but being a fighter, she kept rallying until she could no longer do so. She was a very successful actress, working until only a few years ago, and as a young actress, she was part of Joan Littlewood’s fabled Theatre Workshop. She worked constantly into old age, and will particularly be remembered for her part in I Claudius (Agrippina) and also in Coronation Street. She was one hell of a character and leaves a gap the size of the Grand Canyon in Liza’s life – and the rest of us will miss her wonderful support and unwavering enthusiasm. Glamorous, intelligent, questing, funny, opinionated, charming – and fun. Goodbye Barbara, so glad we knew you.

Back in August, the wrecking ball of life came for me – my beloved partner John died on 13th, slap bang in the middle of the Edinburgh Festival. It’s strange – as I wrote everything up till this moment, my thoughts flowed and my typing fingers flashed, but now I have to write about John, it’s all stopped. As a pianist, I’ve always thought with my fingers, whether on a piano or a qwerty keyboard. But suddenly my fingers aren’t working so well. Ergh.

So, we had almost 23 years together, mostly it was absolutely marvellous (what partnership doesn’t have rough patches?) and I miss him most dreadfully. Another BIG character. What else can I say?

And then, as if that weren’t enough, this year we lost the amazing Kit Hesketh-Harvey, beloved rival and very dear friend to each of us. He died very suddenly at home – a heart attack – and is sorely missed. Our little cabaret community is terribly diminished by his talent and his friendship.

But life goes on, and I have truly wonderful friends. Like the amazing Michael Roulston who gently but firmly helped me get my solo show together in October when I was a mess. Like darling Adèle and darling Liza who were such stalwarts in Edinburgh. Like all the FA team who you don’t know who are bloody fantastic friends and supports. And indeed, with my much loved Auntie Betty whose picture adorns the wall of my office. In my darkest moments I look at her and remember her strength and she gets me through.

So now you understand why I didn’t quite feel ready to throw a 40th anniversary party. Oh well. We will party like maniacs in the autumn with copious amounts of cocoa and Complan!

Come and see the show. I promise it won’t be gloomy. Well, there may be moments of melancholy, but that’s life, isn’t it?
