Guided Tour of Matera

Before being named the European Capital of Culture in 2019, few visited this ancient hilltop city in the Basilicata region. Often unfairly portrayed as backwards or past civilization, Basilicata is traditionally Italy's poorest region and it developed it's own unique culture and history through isolation.

As you stroll around the highlights of striking city built on the rocky hill, your guide will describe the city and it's renaissance into a destination for historians, artists, and archaeologists.

The Caves of the Sassi Neighborhood

From the local dialect for stone, the Sassi has been inhabited for over 9,000 years. After centuries of disrepair and poor living standards, the cave dwellings were evacuated in the years after World War II. The Italian government relocated families who had claims to the same homes for millennia.

Your personal guide will lead you through these fascinating urban caves that have been lovingly restored over the last three decades and are now listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Today the caves are full of shops, restaurants, and a museum describing life in the Sassi. A unique experience not found anywhere else in the world, enjoy the history of this great citadel.

Free Time for Lunch

In the afternoon you'll have some time to explore independently and enjoy an authentic lunch in Matera. Lunch is not included, but your guide can give you some local recommendations of place to eat and traditional Materese dishes to try.

Guided Tour of Alberobello

After lunch, your driver will take you back into Puglia to visit the picturesque town of Alberobello where you'll enjoy a tour through the cobbled streets the discover what makes this historic town so special.

Alberobello is home to the famous trulli houses, iconic cone-shaped homes that date back centuries and have become synonymous with the region. You guide will explain the history of these unique structures and the building techniques that have helped them to survive for so long.

Your tour ends with drop-off back at your hotel or meeting point with plenty of time to enjoy the rest of your evening in the south of Italy.

Enjoying the views

Description

At the indicated time, we'll pick you up at Bari's Chamber of Commerce and start touring the south of Italy by bus.

First, we'll drive through the beautiful landscapes of Apulia. An hour later, we'll arrive in Alberobello , where you'll have 3 hours of free time to visit its ionic trulli . These beautiful masonry constructions, very characteristic of southern Italy, were declared a World Heritage Site in 1996.

The Siamesi and Sovrano trulli , as well as the picturesque neighbourhoods of Rione Aia Piccola and Rione dei Monti , are the main attractions of Alberobello. We also recommend visiting other architectural gems of the town, such as the church of San Antonio di Padua or the Basilica of San Cosimo and San Damiano .

After your free time in Alberobello, we'll meet again in the centre of the town to head for Basilicata . At 1:30 pm, we'll arrive in Matera , a charming little town that was named the European Capital of Culture in 2019.

You'll have another 4 hours free for lunch and a leisurely stroll among the famous Sassi of Matera , curious cave houses located in the historic centre . Did you know that some scenes from the 007 film No Time to Die were filmed here? You'll be able to walk the same streets as the secret agent James Bond !

Finally, we'll return to the meeting point, arriving 10-11 hours after pickup.

Bari is the second most important economic centre of mainland Southern Italy after Naples and is well known as a port and university city, as well as the city of Saint Nicholas. It’s made up of four different urban sections. In the north area, there are the splendid Basilica of Saint Nicholas, Cathedral of San Sabino & Svevo Castle built for Frederick II, which is now also a major nightlife district. To the south is the Murat quarter (erected by Joachim Murat the modern heart of the city with a promenade on the sea and the major shopping district (via Sparano and via Argiro).

Alberobello

Alberobello is a fascinating place where the major attraction is "trulli", the traditional dome-shaped buildings made from the local stone. The town is surrounded by the olive groves and vineyards typical of the region. As well as its houses the town of Alberobello is very tied to ancient traditions and has developed a flourishing handicraft industry, especially related to the manufacture of iron, the production of baskets in olive wood, and the production of renowned wine and oil and not last one the local cuisine with famous hand-made pasta named "orecchiette"

We had an incredible week in Puglia. Emilio and Clara were amazing hosts – they went out of their way to ensure we had a great time and saw all the local sights. They served us superb food and lovely wine and took us each day to a new town or beach nearby. Emilio cooked local dishes, explaining and demonstrating - it was all perfect. It was such a wonderful week and we saw so much. Brilliant being part of their family for a little while and only four other guests. Because it was such a small group it was really friendly and we had lots of fun together. Emilio’s father Antonio and brother Michael also looked after us, driving us from the airport and to various villages and towns. We stayed in a white washed farmhouse surrounded by olive trees -all very comfortable. Such a great week. Highly recommend the trip for travellers who want to meet locals and explore a beautiful part of Italy.

Puglia Walking Tour

Loved strolling through the gentle hills and valleys of Puglia, past trullies, individual plots for olives and almonds, wild flowers including orchids and vibrant red poppies. Travelling to towns such as Ostuni, Lecce, to the historic centres where we strolled though lanes taking in the sites and visiting churches, etc . The UNESCO town of Matera, with cave houses and cave churches hewn from the rock face of the deep ravine, was a highlight as was the 3/4 course lunches we had everyday. We loved our accommodation in a trulli for six nights in Alberobello.

Reviews of Alberobello Tours

Emilio, Clara, Michael and Antonio were fantastic hosts. The food and the sights visited were fantastic. However, a more protein driven menu would have been appreciated. The Casa Clarita was nice, but needed little attentions such as water in the fridge upon our arrival without asking and napkins. The mattresses would need updating and extra blankets. Being North Americans, it would help paying attention to safe driving. These are only constructive criticism, as we truly enjoyed our week on the farm and highly recommend this tour.
My daughter and I recently spent a wonderful week with an absolutely amazing family on their Olive Farm. Emilio, his wife Clara and their 4 children as well as Emilio’s brother Miguel were the perfect hosts. Chef Emilio prepared our breakfast and evening meal each day and either Emilio, Clara or Miguel took us on outings to visit the area to such wonderful places such as Otranto, Castro, Gallipoli (one of my favourite) as well as Zinzulusa Cave which was very interesting. One evening we visited the city of Lecce with Antonio, Emilio and Miguel’s father, which is so beautifully lit up at night and then we stopped at a local famous pizza restaurant and the pizza was absolutely delicious. Great experience and I’d do it again! We then went to the city of Matera for 3 wonderful days and had fantastic tours with Alessio and Cosimo. I had to go home and watch the James Bond movie No Time to Die again to see the wonderful views of Matera within the film. We would also like to thank Omar from Solento Tours. He was most helpful with our requests for further changes to our itinerary once we completed the city of Matera portion where we decided to go to the Amalfi Coast and Naples. Thanks Omar!!
The bike tour was fabulous - the itinery covered many interesting towns, great scenery from contry to ocean, much variation and it was never too hard.

  • B6171MEthomasp 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Vito saves the day and makes it all amazing Vito was a world class tour guide having accommodated 61000 clients before me. When my original tour fell through he was willing to take a solo traveller on the experience of a lifetime. He guided me through the history and unique structures that make up Matera and Alberobello. Because it was the low season I had some of these historic spaces to myself. Vito is passionate about his home region of Puglia and his enthusiasm is infectious. 10/10 would recommend. • marigQ4538UG 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Alberobello is Hidden Gem Full of Wonder This is one of the most beautiful places we have ever gone. We were lucky enough to be there during a summer festival. The white Trullis were sparkling with strings of yellow light. The people are warm and welcoming. The food amazing. The streets are full of shops with local item vs the tourist trap magnets. There are some of those, but overall so great. The thing that really stays with me is watching the look on my partner face as he 1st saw the town. He was just taking it all in. Look of pure wonder. Go. Read more Written November 30, 2023

We had enough time to browse stores and buy things. The lunch stop was very good. Alberobello was amazing! The only reason I am not giving a "5 Star Rating" is because the driver, also the Tour Guide, was quite aggressive driving and one person in our group was uncomfortable. Otherwise, I do recommend the tour. Read more Written November 1, 2023

He was fantastic not only in telling us all about the history of each place but he knew so many people. We had a fantastic lunch in Alberobello and enjoyed the most delicious gelato in Lecce. We were in Puglia for my daughter's wedding and Vito's tours were the perfect add on for something to do for those who didn't have cars. And he even sings! I would book him again in a second. A large part of the town is quite touristy, so be sure to explore further afield where you might just come across a local who is willing to open her doors to show you what life in a trullo is truly like 😊. • galtons 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Not exactly the tour we expected Ostuni, Martina Franca, and especially Alberobello are well worth seeing and it is a relaxing way to do so via a private guide so you don’t have the hassle of driving and parking. Vito arrived on time at the arranged pick up point in Bari and had a comfortable car and was a safe & calm driver. We enjoyed especially that he took the minor road so we enjoyed the local vineyard view rather than the highway. Vito’s English is very good and he is very experienced and a nice guy but we had the sense that he was a bit jaded and keen for the day to be over. Some of his “facts” sounded dubious and when we checked online we found them to be inaccurate. Strangely for a tour listed as 7 hours length, neither a lunch stop nor even a toilet break were factored in to the day even though the tour notes say lunch at your own expense, Vito seemed a bit put out when we initiated a stop). There were a number of listed inclusions on the itinerary that didn’t happen. Overall for the high price, we felt a bit ripped off but still enjoyed the day. Read more Written June 23, 2023
