Shediac Bay Lobster Cruise: A One-of-a-Kind Canadian Seafood Experience

This summer, I set out on a mission to find the best Canadian seafood and the coolest Canadian seafood experiences. My mission was accomplished in Shediac Bay, New Brunswick. 

On a rainy August afternoon, my friends and I made the quick 30-minute drive from Moncton to Shediac Bay to embark on a “Lobster Tales” experience with Shediac Bay Lobster Cruises.

I didn’t know much about the experience beforehand, only that it was going to last about 2.5 hours and there was lobster involved. Needless to say, they had me at “lobster”. 

Our journey began by boarding a 53-foot vessel which was clearly designed specifically for this experience. The interior was lined with picnic tables that can seat up to 56 hungry guests. The boat is also fully heated (much appreciated on this chilly day!) and has an upstairs deck with a 360-degree view of the New Brunswick coastline. 

After getting settled in at our picnic table, Captain Ron gave a quick safety briefing and told us what to expect on the trip. Essentially, we’d be cruising around Shediac Bay and some of New Brunswick’s most prized lobster grounds. Along the way, we’d learn about lobster fishing and the region’s Acadian history. And of course, we’d get to try our hand at pulling up our own lobster traps before learning the proper way to crack and eat the delicious shellfish. 

As we cruised further away from the bay, Captain Ron talked a lot about the history of lobster fishing in New Brunswick and some of the conservation measures put in place to ensure the sustainability of the lobster fishery for the long-term. “We have a moral responsibility to make sure we leave something for the next generation.” he told our group as he explained the fishermen-led quota changes that have taken place over the years to reduce pressure on the fishery. 

About 20 minutes into our journey, Captain Ron stopped at our “fishing spot” where the lobster traps had been laid. A handful of guests volunteered to help him pull the lobster trap out of the water and bring aboard two very tasty looking American lobsters. 

Over the next 30 minutes, Captain Ron explained how the traps are designed to only catch lobsters of a certain size – another conservation measure to ensure the fishery continues to thrive. With a lobster trap aboard for all to see, Ron explained how lobsters enter the traps and get caught and how they’re then brought to the surface. With our two lobsters as demonstration props, Captain Ron showed us how to tell a female lobster from a male lobster (hint: look at the width of their tails!) and how to handle a lobster without getting in the way of their claws. Because as he reminded us all, “lobster claws won’t cut off your finger, but they will break it.”

Finally, after we were well versed in lobster anatomy, traps and conservation measures, it was time to learn how to eat lobster! Captain Ron provided guests with a step-by-step tutorial on the proper way to break down a lobster to ensure not an ounce of precious meat is wasted. Then, it was our turn to try. Freshly steamed lobsters were placed in front of us along with all the required tools and plenty of napkins. 

The chatter on the boat hushed as everyone went to work cracking and slurping. Captain Ron definitely taught me a thing or two about how to maximize the amount of lobster meat I was getting. While I’d cracked lobsters before, I’d never done it the Acadian way that Ron showed us. His methods ended up being the most efficient means of dismantling a lobster! Not a single morsel of lobster meat was wasted and I was sufficiently full by the end of our tour. The vessel is also equipped with a full-service bar for guests who want to purchase a drink to pair with lobster, which I highly recommend. What better pairing is there than ice cold beer and fresh lobster?!

After our bellies were stuffed and the tables were littered with lobster shells and discarded napkins, it was time to head back to shore. We took the opportunity to enjoy those 360-degree views from above and relish in the incredible culinary experience that we just enjoyed. 

I feel so fortunate that seafood tourism experiences like this exist right here in Canada. The seafood industry has been notoriously opaque and difficult for the average consumer to understand. Experiences like those offered by Shediac Bay Cruises are changing that. 

If you find yourself in the Shediac Bay or Moncton area of New Brunswick, I highly recommend hopping on a Lobster Tales adventure with Ron and his crew. It’s an invaluable learning experience and provides great views of the bay. And did I mention – fresh lobster?!

Learning to Lobster the Acadian Way – Shediac Bay Cruises Lobster Tales Review

Of all the lobsters I consumed during my two weeks touring the Canadian Maritime provinces, Shediac, New Brunswick, takes the crustacean cake. This small Acadian town is known as the lobster capital of the world and even boasts the world’s largest lobster. Although fitting, it was actually my time with Shediac Bay Cruises that made the experience so great and oh so tasty. Thanks to their Lobster Tales cruise (see what they did there ;)) I also found out I have been lobstering wrong all these years. 

Read on for my Shediac Lobster Tales review and find out why eating lobster the Acadian way is the only way.

What’s a Lobster Cruise Anyways?

We rolled up to the Shediac wharf and found a wooden cutout of a lobster for tourist photo ops. We instantly questioned what kind of tourist trap we were getting into. Admittedly, I had no idea what this Shediac Lobster Tales cruise was all about. One could only guess fishing for lobster and eating them on board. What’s not to like about that? This thought changed when a busload of 50+ tourists pulled up and boarded. Owner/captain/god-damn lobster whisperer Ron popped on his wireless microphone headset and began his very canned tour. Although I could feel my eyes rolling, I was in for an incredible treat.

Educated in all Things Lobster

We set sail into the sunshine of the Shediac harbour to the sounds of Acadian music. Once in “international waters”, Ron opened the bar with the ring of a bell. He then went on to explain that we were in very good hands. Ron is a seasoned lobster fisherman with 29 years of experience under his fisherman’s cap. His wife/first mate/better-half is the daughter of a lobster fisherman and together along with their staff, run a very tight ship.

After explaining the surprisingly fascinating details about lobster traps, Ron, with a little crowd participation, hauled in a lobster trap containing a rubber chicken for the non-lobster eaters on board. The crowd roared and, admittingly, I did too. Ron’s delivery is thoughtful and his humour is contagious. Suddenly this trip was turning out to be an enjoyable sail. It could have also been the double Caesars . 

Note, why anyone would take this Shediac Lobster Tales cruise and not even like lobster is beyond me, but apparently, it does happen. But I digress…

A second trap came on board bearings three lobsters. With 55+ hungry passengers, there was no way we were pulling up enough traps for our dinner. This was purely for demonstration purposes, and what a demonstration it was. From how the traps work to explaining how lobsters catch prey, move, eat, and reproduce, Ron knows his stuff! He truly is a lobster whisperer and instantly reminded me of Tommy from my time touring the deserts of Namibia . Instead of snakes and chameleons, Ron covers crustaceans in the most interesting and interactive way possible.

The demonstration did not stop there as Ron continued his talk of all things lobsters from sustainability to how to cook and enjoy a lobster properly…a.k.a. the Acadian way. Boiled in very salty water and then given a very salty ice bath produces the tastiest meet as well as making it incredibly easy to get at. Piece by piece, Ron deconstructed his lobster with mind-blowing precision using only his hands. Like some sort of lobster Jedi, Ron revealed lobster pieces and juices I never knew existed.

When it was our turn to tuck in I said there is no way I would be able to reproduce cleaning a lobster with such ease and efficiency. Turns out, when cooked properly…a.k.a the Acadian way, lobster is incredibly easy to crack. It is also so very satisfying and so very tasty. This was my biggest takeaway from this Shediac Lobster Tales Review.

With nothing but our hands we cracked, sucked, and pulled delicious lobster meat with ease, all without butter. Again, if it is cooked right, nothing extra is needed as it only masks the taste.

Set Sail with Lobster Tales

By the end of my meal and experience, I took away a couple of things. One, I have been lobstering wrong all these years. Skip the butter and cook lobster the Acadian way. Two, this lobster cruise was the most interesting and tasty thing I had done on my entire trip on the East Coast .

Ron and company put on a great show and educate all and on how to properly enjoy a lobster as well as the importance of the lobster industry to the region. This should not be a surprise as Shediac Lobster Tales has been named a Canadian signature experience , one that proudly showcases Acadian culture. Yes the tour is a touch cheese, and cheese never goes with seafood, but in the curious case of this Shediac Lobster Tales Review, it is worth the touristy touches and truly is a must-do when visiting the East Coast and the lobster capital of the world.

Cruising for lobsters in shediac bay.

Learning about the lobster world is great, but being aboard a cruise with a chance to eat one for lunch is even better. I took a Lobster Tales cruise last week, complete with lively Acadian music, an amusing host ( Rémi Gaudet ), and captain/lobster fisherman Ron Cormier .

We started at Shediac Bay’s Pointe-du-Chêne wharf, close to the town of Shediac, with the world’s largest lobster on view (90 tons!). Shediac also boasts the warmest waters (20-24 degrees C in summer) north of The Carolinas and contains a friendly French Acadian community.

From May to early October, you can enjoy a scenic and relaxing two and a half hour cruise .

I learned about the lobster industry, how to tell the difference between male and female lobsters, how to cook, crack, and devour a lobster, all before a lunch with a one pound beauty all to myself.

Lobsters have four antennas to help locate their position in the water. They’re 75% blind and eat a hearty diet of herring, mackerel, crab and starfish.

They have two ways of moving: slowly, using their eight legs and their pinchers to hold onto the ocean floor during storms, and at a 25 km clip in order to avoid predators.

Each fisherman is allowed 250 traps during the 10 week lobster season. On a good day, they’ll find between 20 and 25 lobsters in each trap.

If a lobster is either too small (by using a specific measurement tool) or is a female with eggs, it’s sent back into the water.

There’s a very unique way of preparing lobsters Acadian style, involving a pot of salted hot water followed by a dip in an icy salted pot, to help the lobster meat come off more easily.

After a lobster lunch (including bread, potato salad, cole slaw, and a non-alcoholic drink), you can move to the upper deck and take in the view. The music continues throughout the cruise.

The ship has a fully licensed bar onboard and the cruise runs four times daily. The cost is $68 ($46 for children; $198 for two adults and two children under 12) including tax.

An optional bay tour is available. The one hour, 15 minute tour of the bay features commentary on the islands and wharfs and costs $20 ($16 children; $62 for two adults and two children under 12) including tax.

Shediac is a town located in southeastern New Brunswick, Canada.

It is situated on the Northumberland Strait and is known as the “Lobster Capital of the World.”

The town has a population of around 8,000 people and is a popular tourist destination due to its beautiful beaches, seafood restaurants, and local lobster festivals.

Shediac is home to Parlee Beach, which is a popular spot for swimming and sunbathing in the summer months.

The town also has a number of local shops and markets, as well as a number of historical and cultural attractions, such as the Acadian Museum and the Shediac Bay Lighthouse.

Let’s take a look at some of the best things to do in Shediac!

Enjoy the Shediac Lobster Festival

This Shediac Lobster Festival takes place in July and celebrates the region’s rich seafood industry.

It features live music, food vendors, and of course, plenty of lobster.

There are also activities for kids, including face painting and games, as well as cooking demonstrations and other culinary events.

The festival is a great way to experience the local culture and try some delicious seafood.

Explore the Beautiful Shediac Beaches

Shediac has several beautiful beaches to choose from, including Parlee Beach and Pointe-du-Chêne Beach .

These beaches offer a range of activities such as swimming, sunbathing, and fishing.

Both beaches have lifeguard supervision and facilities like washrooms and showers, making them great places to spend a summer day.

Visit the World’s Largest Lobster

This giant lobster sculpture is a popular tourist attraction in Shediac and is a must-see for anyone visiting the town.

It stands at over 15 feet tall and weighs over 12,000 pounds.

The sculpture is located in front of the Visitors Information Centre and makes for a great photo opportunity.

Visit the Shediac Bay Nature Trail

This beautiful walking trail takes visitors through a variety of ecosystems, including wetlands, forests, and meadows.

It’s a great place to go for a hike or a bike ride and take in the natural beauty of the area.

The trail is well-marked and there are several benches along the way where visitors can rest and take in the scenery.

Take a Shediac Boat Tour

If you want to experience Shediac from a different perspective, a boat tour is a great way to do it.

Several companies offer tours of Shediac Bay and surrounding areas, giving you a chance to see the town’s stunning coastline and wildlife up close.

You may even spot some whales (See our post on whale watching in New Brunswick ), dolphins, or seals along the way.

One popular boat tour company in Shediac is the Shediac Bay Cruises .

They offer a variety of boat tours, including a 1-hour scenic cruise of Shediac Bay, a 2-hour sunset cruise, and a 3-hour lobster fishing demonstration tour where you can see how lobster traps are pulled from the water and learn about lobster fishing .

Visit the Pascal-Poirier Historic House

The Pascal-Poirier Historic House is a must-visit for history buffs.

This 19th-century house was once the home of Pascal Poirier, a prominent businessman and politician who played a significant role in the development of New Brunswick.

The house has been preserved as a museum and features exhibits on Poirier’s life and legacy, as well as on life in Shediac in the 1800s.

Go Clam Digging

If you’re looking for a unique outdoor experience, try your hand at clam digging in Shediac Bay.

This popular activity is a great way to get out on the water and learn about the local marine life.

Several local companies offer guided clam-digging tours, where you’ll learn how to dig for clams and get to taste some fresh, delicious seafood.

Just a short drive from downtown Shediac, the Shediac Island Nature Park is a hidden gem that’s worth exploring.

The park is a pristine wilderness area that’s home to a diverse range of wildlife, including several species of birds and mammals.

Visitors can hike through the park’s trails, go birdwatching, or simply relax and enjoy the stunning scenery.

Go Golfing at the Fox Creek Golf Club

The Fox Creek Golf Club offers 18 holes of challenging play, as well as a driving range, putting green, and pro shop.

Fantastic family run business. Includes an educational component for children and a tasty lobster dinner. Chicken or lasagna available to those that would prefer. A must for visitors to the area.

We had a fun evening cruise filled with delicious lobster and a lot of laughs thanks to the Shediac Bay Cruises. The Captain is a total riot, and as long as the guests have a sense of humour, there is considerable fun on this evening attraction. The Sunsets over the bay are incredible and it is lovely to be out on the water. We were celebrating a 50-something anniversary & a 70th birthday as well, so it was truly a night to remember!

We were fortune enough to have our staff party on the Shediac Bay Cruise and I found it to be a very pleasent experience. The staff on board was great and accomodating and the captain was very informative and funny. They offered a lot of food options for groups that you had to pick beforehand so that was very nice as well. There’s a bar on the boat and a nice upstairs so you can enjoy the view and take some nice pictures.

The crew was great, the captain is funny! It seemed a bit much at times to have everything delivered in both French and English, but I understand catering to the whole crowd. The value was good for a lobster dinner cruise. I think my surprise and a bit of disappointment came from the Lobster being served cold and without any butter, just a small side of store bought salads. The other surprise was to be seated on wooden benches with 2 other people on each side. When you hear dinner cruise, I just think of something a little more formal and a little less communal. The experience was fun, entertaining and good for all ages. We just had expected something a little different. Had the website been more detailed about this, we could have managed expectations (or dressed more casually)

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.
