  • SLM2701 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Distilleries are great, but the tour is just a taxi The tour is basically a taxi. There's no "guide". The tour operator does not book even the distillery tour slot. Of course, you have to pay for the tour and tasting yourself - it isn't part of the fee, but I feel that the expectation that guests should call the distillery from their home countries and book their own slots is ridiculous. I mean, I might as well have picked up a taxi in Inverness and told them where to take me. Also, since our "tour" exceeded 4.5 hours (which is bound to happen since the travel time itself is more than 2 hours, and a single distillery tour takes over an hour, plus half an hour each for the tastings at the distilleries, and another 20 mins for a quick lunch stop), we were asked to pay 50 pounds more for each additional hour. Johnny was kind enough to say that he'll try to work something out with the folks through whom we had booked the tour, so we haven't paid the excess yet, but I feel that this tour isn't very well thought out and planned. Note that both Trip Advisor and Viator (through whom we booked this) states 5 hours as the tour time, but the tour operator insists that it's a 4.5 hour tour. Read more Written July 27, 2023
  • H1910OPpamelaa 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Highways, byways, lanes and whiskey with Johnny Johnny is a jovial chap who is eager to share his love of northern Scotland as he drives you to visit three distilleries. Got to see some beautiful countryside. You will tour/taste at one of them, but only do tastings at the other two. These are all pay as you go. We toured and tasted at Balblair. We have visited other distilleries and after a while they are all just variations on a theme. So this tour was largely ideal. The Balblair tour was led by Simon who shared the very interesting history of the land and farm that one of the oldest distilleries in Scotland sits on. I am familiar with the other two distilleries: Glenn morangie and singleton. The singleton tasting room was very nice and bar tenders knowledgeable. The glen morangie tasting room was small with selections I was not familiar with and a pourer who was less than helpful. Read more Written July 26, 2023

Glenmorangie Distillery Tour: Have A Taste of Our Famous Scotch Whisky!

Updated 2017-03-04

If you enjoy the experience of the Glenmorangie Distillery Tour you’ll be drooling with delight when you are spoilt for choice in the shop. You may have to restrain yourself.

Glenmorangie Distillery

Whisky distilleries have always been popular visitor attractions in Scotland, (maybe it’s the tasting that’s the main attraction) and none more so than Glenmorangie Distillery.

Glenmorangie Distillery is situated in Cadboll just outside Tain, the oldest Royal Burgh in Scotland, about 26 miles north of Inverness. Established in 1843, the Distillery has been producing its famous Glenmorangie malt on the shores of the Dornoch Firth, in the malt heartland, and a really nice part of the Highlands.

Glenmorangie whisky is available in a wide range of “finishes” – meaning the whisky can be finished in sherry, port wine, madeira, and burgundy casks, illustrating the difference in taste the wood can make to the whisky.

Whisky Barrels

They use American only ex-Bourbon oak for maturing its Glenmorangie whisky, and every barrel is discarded after the third refill stage. The second largest and fastest growing single malt whisky distillery in the UK was the first in Scotland to steam heat the stills rather than coal fires, which can scorch, affecting flavour. They also use the tallest stills in Scotland, at over 16 feet high.

Glenmorangie whisky is widely recognised as the best single malt in Scotland! Many have declared it to be their favourite tipple, and few would argue with that.

The name Glenmorangie was taken from the Glen of Morangie Burn which means “glen of great tranquillity”. The company is unusual in that it sells virtually all product as single malt rather than producing for blending. That’s probably why it tastes so good.

Stills

Glenmorangie is still a relatively small, family controlled business, owning three distilleries: Glenmorangie, Glen Moray and Ardbeg. They support an employee-nominated charity of the year, and raise funds for the charity through personal and company events. Their famous “Glenmorangie Elegance” is a 21-Year Old malt whiskey, one of the oldest to be released from the Distillery.

No visit to Scotland would be complete without a distillery tour, and Glenmorangie won’t disappoint. The tour lets you see skilled mashmen, stillmen and warehousemen as they go about their daily work. You will also see the fermenting room, filtering processes, bottling and labelling, and the cooking of the preserves and sauces.

At the visitor centre you will learn about Glenmorangie’s pioneering experiments on the effects of wood on whisky, which have led to the “Wood Finish Range” of malts.

Guided tours start every half hour during summer from 10.30am and the last tour starts at 3.30pm. In winter tours start at 10am and groups are welcome. If a Scotland whisky tour is on your agenda, you should try the Glenmorangie Distillery tour.

Glenmorangie Distillery

Nestled on the unspoiled shores of the Dornoch Firth, and the golden barley fields of Ross-shire, you will find the Glenmorangie Distillery. Known as the “valley of tranquillity” in Scots Gaelic. Glenmorangie distils its whisky in Scotland’s tallest stills and uses traditional casks cut from 100-year-old oaks. Creating a spirit with a soft yet rich finish. The distillery offers whisky tours where you can meet the distillers, hear historic tales from your guide and see where the gold stuff is made. And at less than an hour’s drive from Ness Walk Hotel, it makes for a great day out for our guests.

Stills as tall as a giraffe!

Glenmorangie Distillery, founded in 1843, is known for using the tallest copper stills in Scotland. The neck of the still is measured at 5.14 metres, which is as tall as an adult male giraffe. This extra space creates a fast-maturing, smooth and delicate whisky. Therefore giving it the light, subtle taste that Glenmorangie is known for. It is also a unique sight to behold, as the stills look very different from others you may have seen in other Scottish distilleries.

Visitor Centre and Tours

The Glenmorangie Distillery Visitor Centre is open 7 days a week and offers a selection of experiences. From the Original Tour to the more in-depth and experimental Innovation Tour. So you’ll get to see the famous tall stills for yourself and discover just how this popular brand of single malt whisky is produced.

Glenmorangie is a distillery in Tain, Ross-shire, Scotland, that produces single malt whisky known worldwide for its extremely light taste. The stretch of land in the Northern Highland on which Glenmorangie stands has been the site for alcohol production (primarily illicit) since the Middle Ages, setting a formidable legacy. Glenmorangie was founded in 1843, although it began operation in 1849. The distillation process was undertaken for decades by a staff of 16, known as The Sixteen Men of Tain, who worked year-round, with the exceptions of Christmas and maintenance periods. Expansion led to a more extensive staff of 24, now collectively referred to on bottles as The Men of Tain.

Dornoch, nestled in the Highlands of Scotland, is an absolute treasure. Picture this: a town perched along the northeastern coast, with breathtaking views over the Dornoch Firth. Its irresistible charm and rich history draw travelers looking for stunning landscapes and a deep cultural experience.

At the heart of Dornoch’s allure is the ancient Dornoch Cathedral. Imagine stepping back to the 13th century as you wander around this magnificent structure, where Gothic and Norman styles meld seamlessly. Despite the tests of time and history, the cathedral stands proudly, lovingly restored. It’s more than just a building; it’s a testament to Dornoch’s enduring spirit and its layers of history waiting to be explored.

The surrounding landscape of Dornoch is equally enchanting. Walking trails around the town provide opportunities to explore the rugged beauty of the Scottish Highlands, with its rich wildlife and panoramic views.

Dornoch’s history is also evident in its celebrations and festivals. Events like the Dornoch Highland Gathering bring the community together and showcase traditional Scottish sports, music, and dancing.

Due to our limited time, we just walked around the town for a while. Afterwards, we paid a short visit to the Historylinks Museum. After the lovely visit to Dornoch, we took the bus to Tains. After a short drive, we reached Glenmorangie Distillery.

Glenmorangie Distillery Tour

Glenmorangie Distillery - All You Need to Know BEFORE You Go

Glenmorangie Distillery, nestled in the Scottish Highlands near the tranquil town of Tain , stands as a beacon of Scotch whisky excellence. With a history that dates back to 1843, Glenmorangie has long been synonymous with exceptional single malt whisky, renowned for its innovation, craftsmanship, and distinct style.

The distillery is famed for having the tallest stills in Scotland, which play a crucial role in its whisky’s character. These towering copper stills ensure only the lightest and purest vapors ascend, resulting in a smoother and more elegant spirit.

Glenmorangie’s range of whiskies is diverse, each expression showcasing a unique aspect of the distillery’s expertise. Their core range includes the Glenmorangie Original, a ten-year-old single malt that sets the standard for Highland whisky with its creamy smoothness and hints of citrus and vanilla.

Beyond this, the distillery experiments with various cask finishes, like the Quinta Ruban, aged in port casks, and the Lasanta, matured in sherry casks, imparting complex flavor layers.

Distillery Tour and Whisky Tasting

glenmorangie distillery tour

Visitors to Glenmorangie Distillery will have a memorable experience. The visitor center offers a deep dive into the Glenmorangie whisky-making process and its related kills, built over generations: from mashing and fermentation to distillation and aging. Guests can explore the traditional warehouses where the whiskies age gracefully and enjoy guided tastings that reveal the subtleties of each expression.

The Whisky-Making Process Unveiled

The tour kicks off with an engaging walkthrough of the mashing process. Here, guests discover firsthand how the finest barley morphs into a sugary liquid poised for fermentation. This critical phase lays the groundwork for the whisky’s distinctive character, allowing visitors to grasp the significance of ingredient quality in the result.

Following this, the journey continues to the fermentation stage. Within the confines of large wooden or stainless steel washbacks, the mixture of wort and yeast triggers the sugar’s conversion into alcohol. Beyond mere alcohol creation, this period marks the beginning of the liquid’s flavor and aroma complexity.

At the core of the distillery tour is the distillation process, where Glenmorangie Distillery’s acclaim for its tall copper pot stills comes to life. These stills are pivotal in producing the distillery’s uniquely smooth and refined spirit. Guests can observe the distillation as the spirit undergoes heating and condensation to remove impurities. Through this meticulous process, only the purest vapors rise through the still, shaping the whisky’s distinct character.

Glenmorangie Whisky Aging and Maturation

Finally, the tour leads the visitors into the traditional warehouses, where the magic of aging and maturation takes place. There, surrounded by casks of various sizes and types, guests uncover the secrets behind the whisky’s transformation over time. The choice of cask—be it ex-bourbon barrels or sherry casks—impacts the whisky’s color, flavor, and aroma.

Guided Tastings

Glenmorangie Distillery Tour

At the end of the Glenmorangie Distillery tour, guests participate in a guided tasting session. Through expert-led tastings, visitors develop an appreciation for the nuances that make each Glenmorangie whisky unique.

DELICIOUS WHISKY SINCE 1843

CRAFTED FROM CURIOSITY

Our story begins in 1843 with farmer William Matheson who, with his wife, Anne, set about building a distillery in the Scottish Highlands. Selling their whisky for mere shillings per gallon, the venture may have started small, its location remote, but the Mathesons' vision was extraordinary.

They were laying the foundations of what would become one of the most famous Scotch whisky distilleries in the world.

The distillery

glenmorangie whiskey distillery tour

A love of our lands

Matheson’s whisky was named after the peaceful land he loved. In Gaelic, the ancient language of Scotland, ‘Glenmorangie’ means ‘Valley of Tranquility’. By virtue of the way it is made, all whisky is inherently linked to the land, but Glenmorangie is perhaps rooted more deeply than any other, being tightly woven into the long, rich history of our native Ross-shire.

Unusually tall stills

Fast forward almost two centuries and our whisky has come a long way.  From inventing our legendary Glenmorangie Original to pioneering advanced cask management techniques, we have continuously pushed the boundaries of what is possible in whisky-making. Perhaps our most famous innovation being our towering copper stills which stand proud as the tallest in Scotland at 5.14 metres (the same height as a giraffe!) creating a more delicate spirit, ripe for experimentation.

Our protected water source

One of the secrets to our craft lies in our unique Tarlogie Springs. These natural springs are unusually rich in minerals giving our whiskies a distinctive fruitiness and deliciously smooth finish. To keep this water pure, we own and protect the entire forest that surrounds our source.

Pioneering wood techniques

Hundreds of years’ worth of expert craftsmanship is poured into every drop of whisky we make. Wood plays a major part in this, and we’re proud of our sustainable wood policy and innovative wood-management approaches. Our team carefully craft the most prized casks for our spirit to come alive in.

glenmorangie whiskey distillery tour

Glenmorangie has had many loyal team members over the years, but few men or women devoted so much of their lives to the Distillery as Gordon L Smart (1895-1972). Gordon was appointed Distillery manager in 1920 after his father Alexander, the previous Distillery manager, passed away. It was a position he would fill for a remarkable fifty years. His core workforce at the Distillery - the so-called ‘16 Men of Tain’ - were also long-serving and provided a wealth of whisky making experience and time-honoured skills.

Today there are '24 Distillers of Tain’ led by Distillery manager, Edward Thom, who in 2022 won the Global Distillery Manager of the year at the prestigious Whisky Magazine Icons of Whisky Awards. Glenmorangie has continued to support and build strong relationships with its surrounding community, attracting many generations to craft its award winning whiskies over the years.
