Restaurant Zenner in Treptower Park enjoyed cult status in East Germany. Nowadays, Zenner Eierschale and the neighbouring burger joint are a point of call on hot days to enjoy something cool to drink. Weekends sometimes see the crowd there dancing foxtrott to all-time party favourites.
Another particularity of the park is the ”Insel der Jugend” (“Island of Youth”), which can be reached crossing a small pedestrian bridge.
Also the Grillboot , which can be rented here with favourable weather conditions for up to 10 people is fairly unique in the inner city. The Archenhold Observatory is part of the park, with the world’s longest refracting telescope!

Why Should You Visit Treptower Park in Berlin, Germany?
by Original Berlin Tours | Oct 17, 2023 | Walking Tour
If you’re planning a trip to Berlin, Germany, make sure to add Treptower Park to your itinerary. Located in the southeastern part of the city, this park offers a perfect combination of history, relaxation, and natural beauty. Whether you’re a history enthusiast, nature lover, or simply looking for a tranquil escape, Treptower Park has something for everyone to enjoy.
The History of Treptower Park:
During World War II, Berlin was heavily impacted by the conflict, leaving behind scars that can still be seen today. Treptower Park, once a battlefield, now stands as a memorial to honor the Soviet soldiers who lost their lives while liberating Berlin. The park houses the impressive Soviet War Memorial, an awe-inspiring monument that commemorates the fallen soldiers.
Exploring the Soviet War Memorial:
The centerpiece of Treptower Park is the Soviet War Memorial, a monumental complex that pays tribute to over 7,000 Soviet soldiers who died in the Battle of Berlin. This massive memorial, designed by architect Yakov Belopolsky and unveiled in 1949, features a striking statue of a Soviet soldier holding a child atop a raised platform. The soldier is surrounded by powerful reliefs and sculptures portraying scenes from the war.
As you walk through the memorial, you’ll come across a grand, tree-lined avenue leading to the central statue. The avenue is flanked by two large stone memorials, which house the remains of over 5,000 Soviet soldiers. The entire memorial is a solemn and poignant tribute that offers a glimpse into Berlin’s wartime history.
Recreational Activities in Treptower Park:
Treptower Park isn’t just about history; it also provides a range of recreational activities for visitors to enjoy. Here are some highlights:
1. Walking and Cycling:
The park offers numerous paved paths, making it ideal for a leisurely walk or bike ride. Take a stroll along the park’s beautifully landscaped gardens, or rent a bike and explore the park’s vast green spaces at your own pace.
2. Boat Tours:
If you want a unique perspective of Berlin, hop on one of the boat tours that operate along the Spree River, which borders Treptower Park. These tours allow you to take in the city’s famous landmarks while enjoying a relaxing cruise.
3. Picnics and BBQs:
Treptower Park is an ideal spot for a picnic or BBQ. Pack a blanket, grab some local delicacies from a nearby market, and enjoy a relaxing day surrounded by nature.
4. Playground and Sports Facilities:
If you’re visiting with children, they’ll love the park’s well-equipped playground. Additionally, Treptower Park has various sports facilities, including tennis courts and beach volleyball courts, where you can engage in some outdoor activities.
How to Get to Treptower Park:
Treptower Park is easily accessible by public transportation. Here’s how you can get there:
By S-Bahn (Train):
Take the S-Bahn line S8, S9, or S85 and get off at the Treptower Park station. From there, it’s just a short walk to the park entrance.
Several bus lines serve Treptower Park, including 104, 166, 194, 265, and M41. Check the local transportation website for the most up-to-date schedules and routes.
Additional Tips:
- Wear comfortable shoes, as you’ll be doing a fair amount of walking.
- Bring a camera to capture the stunning views and memorial.
- Consider visiting in the early morning or late afternoon to avoid crowds.
- Take a moment to reflect and pay your respects at the Soviet War Memorial.
So, if you’re looking to immerse yourself in Berlin’s history, relax in a beautiful park, or enjoy recreational activities, Treptower Park is a must-visit destination. It offers a unique blend of somber remembrance and natural beauty, ensuring a memorable experience for all who venture there.

Treptow-Köpenick
Berlin from the River Spree to the Müggelsee lake
Our favourite places in Treptow-Köpenick
The Industriesalon Schöneweide museum shows you everything about an important chapter in Berlin's history: Industrialisation. Then take a refreshing dip in Müggelsee, Berlin's largest lake, where you can swim, paddle and row to your heart's content.

What you need to know about Treptow-Köpenick
Proportionally, Treptow-Köpenick has the largest area of forest, waterways and lakes of any Berlin borough. And with its rivers and lakes, beautiful parks and the charming old town of Köpenick , the south-east of Berlin is like a weekend trip, every day, any day. But it also has many other fascinating facets, from the history recounted in its old industrial buildings to the popular FEZ leisure centre, renowned as a paradise for families. Treptow-Köpenick is also highly rated for the space it offers for sports, with perfect conditions for windsurfing, sailing, jogging and cycling.
Stretching from the eastern edge of the city to green Treptower Park , Treptow-Köpenick is Berlin's largest borough in terms of area. Its neighbour to the west is Kreuzberg, famed as the heartlands of Berlin’s alternative culture, but Treptow-Köpenick is also home to a vibrant nightlife and arts scene. The Arena is one of the city’s hottest venues for parties, events, and concerts, while the hipsters can be found hunkered down with laptops and coffee in the cafés and bars along Lohmühlenstraße.
Down along the eastern River Spree, the borough becomes increasingly idyllic. Tour boats depart from the Treptower Park jetty for the inner city, and paddle boats often criss-cross the quiet waters at the Insel der Jugend (Island of Youth). If you prefer stargazing to messing about in boats, head for the nearby Archenhold Observatory in Treptower Park to explore the mysteries of the universe.
Towards Schöneweide, the old brick industrial buildings have gained a new lease of life as home to start-ups and the studios of art students. At Berlin’s leading technology park in Adlershof , which attracts scientists from around the world, the future is also high on the agenda.

The Captain of Köpenick
In the early 1930s, Köpenick town hall and old town were immortalised on the stage. Carl Zuckmayer’s classic play, based on real events, recounted the exploits of an imposter known as “The Captain of Köpenick” (Hauptmann von Köpenick). Even today, the town hall is a regular venue for readings from the play. Close by, you can find a beautiful baroque palace on a little island.
For a break, head for the cosy Altstadtcafé Cöpenick and treat yourself to the sorts of delicious cakes you might find in a Viennese coffee house. Afterwards, stroll down Bölschestraße in Friedrichshagen, window shopping in the many little outlets selling hand-made goods.
Our tips for Treptow-Köpenick

Woodland and water
At Müggelsee lake , you can explore the many waterways in this borough – on a canoe tour through the canals criss-crossing the Neu-Venedig area, on a boat tour or windsurfing, or just by making a bigger splash at the lakeside bathing beach.
But there is still more to discover in Treptow-Köpenick! Across Müggelsee lake to the south, the Müggelturm viewing tower offers a stunning panorama of the woods. Further south, you can see the Grünau district on the other side of the River Dahme. Hardly surprisingly, with so much water in the Treptow-Köpenick borough, Grünau is famous for its sailing regattas!

Ranked one of the best parks in Berlin, Treptower Park is a large 207-acre park that runs along the banks of the River Spree.
Treptower Park is probably best known for the Soviet War Memorial designed and built in 1949 in remembrance of the 80,000 who sacrificed their lives during the Battle of Berlin in April and May 1945.
Visiting the memorial and reflecting upon the soldiers, both Russian and non-Russian, who finally put a finish to the Nazi regime is a must as one reflects on the freedom we have to enjoy this magnificent park.
Start from the Treptower Park train station with a walk, bike or jog along the 4-kilometre riverside path where you can enjoy the changing view and the sight of pleasure boats, paddleboats and houseboats plying the river.
During your stroll, take a small detour from the river path to see the beautiful rose garden.
Farther along, walk across the picturesque Abteibrücke footbridge to Insel der Jugend (Island of Youth) and refresh yourself at one of two beer gardens or workout at the outdoor Calisthenics Park.
Consider renting a paddleboat or taking a sightseeing cruise on the Spree from one of the boat rental or tour operators near Insel der Jugend.
Continuing southeast, keep your eye out for the old SpreePark Ferris wheel, one of the rides in a historic amusement park dating back the GDR days. It hasn’t been operational for many years, but there are plans to bring some kind of amusement park back to life here. On weekends you can take a guided tour of the old site.
If you reach the far end of the park, just for fun, you can enjoy a short 2-minute ride (each way) across the River Spree on the F11 passenger ferry.
On your return walk, take the wooded inland paths and don’t miss the Soviet War Memorial if you didn’t see it yet.
Treptower Park is large, offering a beautiful diverse landscape and many activities. Plan on spending a least 3 to 4 hours. A full day is even better.

Berlin By Boat: Photos from the Spree
Posted on Last updated: 31 August 2023
Home » Europe » Germany » Berlin » Berlin By Boat: Photos from the Spree
Recently I was invited by Hannes from one of Berlin’s newest boat tour operators, Berlin Liquide , to experience an afternoon out on the River Spree. After having lived here for a number of summers, I’ve spent a lot of time hanging out by the river (as you do in Berlin), but this was my first opportunity to actually get on a boat and see Berlin from a different perspective. We were lucky that this autumn was relatively warm in Berlin, plus the sun managed to stick around for a lot of the season.
Hannes is a friendly German guy that speaks perfect English and his boat, suitable for 12 people, provides the perfect setting for a half-day tour of Berlin. The private boat tours can be focused around one of four different themes and Hannes has done a great job of showcasing some of Berlin’s best alternative parts in his tours. On this particular tour, we departed from the boat’s dock at Kaisersteg in Schöneweide (easily reached from the S-Bahn) and spent the next three hours on a blissful boat ride through the eastern half of Berlin. Is there anything better than being on a boat?!
Typical Berlin – Spotted someone in a pink suit with an elephant head while going past Treptower Park
Is there anything better than a boat tour?!
O Captain, My Captain!
Having gone past this sculpture a million times by train and walking, it was great to see it up close and personal. It’s the Molecule Men—a metal sculpture by the American sculptor Jonathan Borofsky. And meant to symbolize the meeting point of the three Berlin neighborhoods that meet at that point: Treptow, Kreuzberg and Friedrichshain.
What would a Berlin tour be if it didn’t show off the city’s street art? This is a famous mural by Italian artist, Blu, in Kreuzberg
The reverse side of the East Side Gallery
Berlin is one of the greenest cities of Europe – it’s not hard to see why
Berlin’s riverside is lined with bars and nightclubs, especially in the area known as the “Media Spree”
This is downtown Berlin. And it is beautiful
The Berlin Media Spree project set about to urbanize Berlin’s riverside properties but it’s been met with plenty of controversy over the years—namely the fact that it’s a privatization of what many consider should be a public space. There’s a lot more to add about gentrification, but I think the next picture sums it up.
Old and new… the East Side Gallery meets luxury condos along the Spree river
Known as the “Futuro House”, this private house is only one of a hundred or so created by Finnish architect Matti Suuronen. To me, it just looks like an UFO.
‘Gramming on a boat #caughtgramming
Berlin Liquide’s private boat tours last between three and five hours, costing upwards from 170€ and are suitable for up to 11 people. If you fill up a boat with your friends, it’s a great deal—better than some of the bigger, much more commercial boat tours that float through the Spree. Plus, if the weather is decent and you dare to do it, you can even go for a swim in the river or in one of the lakes.

These photos are incredible and so inspiring! I would love love love to see Berlin one day! It’s just one of those cities…you know? :)
Raza from http://www.thetravelixir.com
Hopefully you can visit Berlin at some point – it’s a fantastic city!
Thank you for your photos, Adam! I love boat tours because I feel so refreshed with winds on the open-air deck. In Berlin, everything seen from the boat is beautiful. Trees, arts, buildings… The views are great in Tokyo as well, but the problem is the water.
Oh yes – the air is very fresh on a boat, but I think Berlin is lucky because the air here is generally pretty fresh. It’s just such a green city! I actually wouldn’t go swimming in the River Spree myself but the nearby lakes are great for swimming :)
Awesome pics. Downtown Berlin pic is simply superb and i really love the boat journey.
I just love the journey through Berlin on a boat – I think it really showcases the diversity of the city
Berlin is so wonderfully weird, and a river tour reveals that even better than walking through the streets. I’ll definitely be doing this when I get there!
Great Website Adam! Thanks for all your effort.Do you know if there will be fun stuff to do late next week? We are 2 gay guys coming over from England to explore and soak up the culture-I guess there won’t be boat trips in January?!haha. But hopefully the flea markets will be on-they look fun for sunday!

Top 5 boat restaurants in Berlin
There's something about boats that brings out the fun in people. Maybe it's the possibility that you might sink or – normally – once sailing, you can't get off, so you make the most of it. Whatever the reason, it's time to embrace it with my Top 5 boat restaurants in Berlin . While there aren't many restaurants to eat on a boat in Berlin, those that serve the water promise a unique experience with some of Berlin's most beautiful views. Here we go!
Patio aka Riethoen
Probably the best spot in Moabit for a nicely plated fine dining dinner experience! The ship restaurant is located on the river Spree with a fantastic view and neatly served food but still kept young with all the service staff. In summer you can enjoy the beautiful sunset drinking wine on the deck, in winter you can sit around the cosy fire places on the upper and lower deck.
They also have other boats, which are not only anchored! From RIETHOEN you can admire Bellevue Palace, the House of World Cultures, the Berlin Cathedral, the City Palace, the Chancellery, the government quarter and other historical sights in an exclusive atmosphere. Twice a day the boat depart for the Apero Cruise (17:00) and the Sunset Cruise (21:00) . With an aperitif and a small culinary surprise you start the evening on the RIETHOEN and through the city centre of Berlin. Or after dinner you can go on a journey into the sunset with a digestif. I personally recommend the Sunset Cruise!
