Roula Khalaf, Editor of the FT, selects her favourite stories in this weekly newsletter.

Boarding a train to Birmingham the other day, I was stopped by a man at Euston station. A fellow Muslim, he complimented me on my work and then said, “But you’ll have to wear the hijab one day.” “I don’t think so,” I replied. It was an awkward exchange and yet a timely one, given the ongoing interest in the niqab , or full-face veil, in Britain, and it made me reflect on what amounts to “Islamic dress”.

Anyone who has travelled in Muslim countries will have seen the diversity of apparel from Indonesia to south Asia, Arabia and Africa, and Muslims in the west are developing their own norms. Sadly, one part of the Muslim world’s concept of Islamic dress may be unacceptable in another, even if rooted in centuries of tradition.

When I lived in Saudi Arabia as a child, my mother, despite being conservatively attired in her shalwar kameez and keeping her head covered, was required to wear an abaya, or black cloak, over the top.

Thankfully, there was no requirement for foreign women to cover their faces, so we could at least spot our mother easily if we wandered off in the supermarket. For Saudi children whose mothers were fully veiled, with even their eyes hidden, it was more tricky – they would peer at the feet of black-clad figures, trying to identify them by their shoes. My urologist father, meanwhile, had the odd experience of lecturing to halls full of veiled medical students, and the even odder experience of his female patients disrobing from the neck down when required but always keeping their niqabs on.

In the Koran, the subject of dress is touched upon only a handful of times, with the dominant requirement being modesty on the part of both sexes. One verse puts the emphasis on actions over appearances: “O children of Adam, we have provided you with garments to cover your bodies, as well as for luxury. But the best garment is the garment of righteousness.” (7:26)

The trip to Birmingham was for the project in which I have been engrossed for the past few weeks – a Panorama documentary about the Pakistani schoolgirl Malala Yousafzai , including her first interview since being shot by the Taliban in October 2012. She is an articulate, compelling young woman, with an infectious passion for education. One of the nurses who looked after her at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital told me she had never seen anyone want to do their homework the way Malala did.

We pieced together her story by filming in both the UK and Pakistan but the day we spent with her medical team in Birmingham was eye-opening. One of the doctors involved was consultant otologist Richard Irving, who was charged not just with restoring Malala’s badly damaged hearing but also the paralysis on the left side of her face.

He described to me the 10-hour operation that revealed the gunman’s bullet had severed her facial nerve, with the missing section making it impossible for the two ends to meet along its original route. He decided to expose and re-route the nerve so it would travel a shorter distance, allowing the ends to be brought together. I listened in awe.

There are only a handful of specialists in the UK with experience of this kind of surgery and it would not have been available to Malala had she remained in Pakistan. Although the doctors there saved her from death in the hours after the shooting, the team in Birmingham gave her back a full life. Without people such as Richard Irving and his team, she might never have had the confidence to speak again in public, as she did so memorably at the UN in July .

It’s been a great summer for street food in London with organisations such as Kerb showing fast food can also be good food. I first encountered Kerb’s group of travelling cooks and producers at the South Bank, and have enjoyed seeing them pop up at street parties and fairs elsewhere. One of my personal favourites is Cesar Roden of the Ice Kitchen , who makes “artisan ice lollies”, with flavours ranging from pink mojito to banana choco dip.

His challenge now will be to keep a seasonal business going through the winter. An observation from Moscow might be cause for hope – when I lived there during my gap year before university, I was struck by how many people would stop for an ice cream throughout the year, even on the coldest days. If Cesar can plant the same idea in Londoners’ minds, he’ll do fine.

It’s now almost a year since BBC News began moving into New Broadcasting House in central London, parting with our old studios at White City. For me, it has meant a shorter commute, and an incentive to fulfil my own post-Olympics pledge – to start cycling for the first time in nearly 10 years. As I gained in confidence, the experience became more enjoyable, despite one near-miss involving a white van and my personal version of road rage – that is, rage at the state of the roads.

There is one stretch of my route, a street in one of London’s wealthiest boroughs, where the surface of the cycle lane resembles open gravel, with patches of complete disintegration. Complaining, and even emailing photographs to the local authority, has had no effect.

I shall probably plague them no longer, as my new working hours on Radio 4’s Today programme have prompted a cycling rethink. Although the merits of coming into work on a bike at 4am have been recommended by one of my fellow presenters, I’m unconvinced.

Instead, I’m using the bike more for errands. When I cycled to the dry cleaner the other day, I was greeted with the words, “You’re brave.” I duly launched into tales of potholes and white vans, only for him to clarify that he meant my last breaking news assignment. “I meant Cairo. You were brave to go out there in all that trouble.” I wonder which risk is statistically greater?

Mishal Husain joins BBC Radio 4’s ‘Today’ on October 7. ‘Malala: Shot For Going to School’ airs on ‘Panorama’ on BBC One at 8.30pm on the same day

The Digital Influencer: Travel Junkie Diary Founder Michelle Karam TJD's Michelle Karam explores how she turned her blog, to being one of the region's biggest influencers.

By Entrepreneur Middle East Staff • May 7, 2015

You're reading Entrepreneur Middle East, an international franchise of Entrepreneur Media.

The founder of Travel Junkie Diary ( TJD) , Michelle Karam, set out to develop her now-successful venture years ago in the format of a blog. That blog soon gathered a strong and loyal following, and Karam's digital footprint grew and grew... and grew. The Dubai-based entrepreneur is now one of the region's biggest influencers and the brands come knocking regularly (and with gusto). "Being in the corporate world of travel and events since I was 16 and stepping out of it after 16 years, I found it challenging to get back into it after a two-year gap. I've always tried starting something on my own and so after a lot of planning, executing and convincing family, I decided to start small. Not being a writer myself, I thought the best ways for people to enjoy the blog would be from contributing writers and stories (diaries) from other people. Soon enough, I would then turn the blog into a trusted site and create a namefor myself where people could turn to for any travel inspiration and businesses would look at the brand as a social media push and assistance."

It's clear from visiting TJD 's social media channels that a great deal of Karam's influence comes from her engaging (and charming) online identity. Users are not only interested in the posts about far-flung destinations and opulent hospitality outlets, they are actually interested in Karam herself. Can everyone launch a profitable business using the cult of personality? Karam says that firmly-planted feet are needed, and so is a willingness to actually talk back to portal users. "For one, you will need to know that although it seems like the world revolves around you... it doesn't. A person needs to have the passion and curiosity for people. Someone to look up to is a huge responsibility to take on."

"You need to stay humble, grounded and honest. Most of all, if you are trying to be someone you are not, you will fail. Don't ever try to follow trends; you won't stand out. Plus, it will be so difficult to go on if you are not yourself. Replying back to people, readers, followers, is the main thing. So many of those social influencers don't take the time to respond back; those may seem to get far but the quality of people is not what businesses are looking for." Karam does keep a clear separation between her personal life and public persona and has been called "mysterious" by some of her followers: "I have heard people say that, but I believe it's only protecting myself, my reputation and my family ."

travel diary mishal hashmi

Big brands have noticed TJD 's loyal following and virality, and her positive (and clean) digital footprint. Some of Karam's most recent strategic alliances include flydubai, ATS Travel , and tons of mainstay hospitality brands in the luxury hotel segment. Her collaboration with flydubai was part of making a few of her followers' dreams a reality: a fully comped vacation in the location of Karam's choice under the Travel with TJD banner. "I approached flydubai not so long ago with a business proposal. Travel with TJD was in the works for two years, building followers and viewership. flydubai instantly loved the idea of giving back to readers. In a world where everyone seems to only take, we tend to forget that we also need to give back and help others or push others to build memoriesand travel more. Travel with TJD is a miniseries of travelers flying with strangers, and the journey of them becoming friends and experiencing new things. They will always remember that moment where they all fell in love with the idea of their new friendship and destination." TRAVEL JUNKIE DIARY'S TOP THREE TRAVEL TRENDS OFF THE BEATEN PATH "Families are more adventurous in their travels. Taking their kids to South East Asia, backpacking, hiking and being more raw into their travels."

PARING DOWN "Flying light. I'm not sure if it's only because I fly light that I began to notice this, but flying light is definitely a trend now. I call it flying smart!"

GOING DIGITAL "Technology is changing the way we travel. We can now book and pick anything and everything via our smartphones. Room service, hotel bookings (even pick your own room), hotel check-in online, unlocking rooms with smartphones, uploading newspapers online in your room with a scan code, and you can even find your luggage using GPS if it gets lost using Bluesmart!"

Last-minute planning of a trip can consist of chaotic lists in your phone's notes app while the chronicling of said trip may look like sporadic photos in your camera roll. But what if there was a collective place you could plan in advance and jot down funny moments along the way? A travel journal can culminate the ups (and downs) of your vacation with guided prompts and templates.

Our experts at Good Housekeeping Institute extended our expertise in the best photo book makers and best wedding planning books to research the best travel journals, a category we have not yet formally tested. We rounded up the best travel journals of 2023, whether you want a self-designed bullet journal or a notebook with fun maps and stickers. At the end of our list, you can find advice on how to start your travel journal as well as read more about why you can trust Good Housekeeping. And if you have a frequent traveler in your life besides yourself, check out our guide to the best travel gift ideas (although a journal is a great idea too!).

The Art of the National Parks: Park-Lover's Journal

The Art of the National Parks: Park-Lover's Journal

Perfect for the outdoors enthusiast in your life, this journal celebrates each of the 63 parks. It's 175 pages long and comes with prompts that'll help them chronicle their journey. It doesn't hurt that this journal has gorgeous illustrations of each park by real artists.

Papier Off Piste

Off Piste

Whether this is your first or fifth travel journal, or a gift for the college student in your life who's about to go abroad, Papier's notebooks will check all of the boxes. One GH editor has the Off Piste journal and loves the cover, a simple design that includes a meaningful quote, and appreciates the helpful templates you'll find inside the notebook. You'll be able to document up to six trips with templates for your budget, packing list, transportation, accommodation, itinerary and a journaling space for freestyle writing. There are also pages dedicated to a travel wishlist as well an illustrative map you can color in as you mark off countries you've visited.

Peter Pauper Press Page-A-Day

Journals can ring in at a variety of prices, but you can find a great travel journal for under $10 that will still give you enough space to write about your wanderings around the world. This leather-bound journal dedicates one page to each day of your trip, with spaces to add in the date, location and weather conditions (we especially like the delicate drawings for types of participation which you can circle with your pencil or pen). Dotted lines on the page will keep your entries neat and organized and an included ribbon bookmark will keep track of where you left off last. Even though this journal is pretty basic in design and on the smaller side, we think it's a great option for someone who doesn't want to spend too much on their first travel journal.

Clever Fox Vacation Planner

But what makes this journal really stand out is its extensive range of templates geared towards helping you plan your trip. If you like to plan out every detail, this is the perfect travel journal for your needs. We wish you could fit more than five trips in the journal, but for the price, it's a great value.

A perfect gift for the international traveler, you can also add a foil debossed monogram to the cover if you want to add a personal flare to the notebook. We wish that the journal was available in more than one color, but the rust orange is a versatile enough choice that will stick out in a dark suitcase or bag.

Duncan & Stone Paper Co. World Trip Adventure Book

The layflat design makes it easy to open and write on, and you'll have enough pages to reflect on 15 trips plus a back pocket for extra photos and blank pages for notes and random musings. What we love most about this journal are the helpful prompts that guide newbies through the process of journaling, with questions like "Where did you stay?." and "Something I learned from this destination/culture..." From basic to more thought-provoking questions, you'll have a boost of inspiration to help you document your journey.

Day One Day One

Day One

Extreme Assistants Classic Notebook

Classic Notebook

If you travel a lot, or tend to squish as much as you possibly can into your carry-on (we have all been there), you'll want a durable journal that can withstand being tossed around and bumping against other items in your bag. A faux leather hardcover and thick paper ensure your journal will stay intact as you travel to and fro. The manufacturer adds that the cover is designed to be easy to clean, which is helpful if you are journaling on the airplane or train and accidentally spill your drink. We also appreciate that you can add a photo or logo to the cover for an element of personalization, especially since the notebook is more basic in style.

The Traveler's Playbook: A World Travel Journal

Journaling of any kind can be intimidating as you don't always know where to start — even a notebook with guiding prompts can lead to partial writer's block. This popular travel journal has a 4.3-star rating on Uncommon Goods is designed by explorer Deanna Didzun who created illustrations and lists to help jog your memory of your most recent journey. Bound in crossgrain lambskin and available in a light blue or scarlet red, you'll have 128 pages of lined Featherweight paper to fill. This notebook is all about quality and is designed to last, but with that comes a higher price tag. It would be a great gift for the writer in your life who loves to travel, but given its simple layout and lack of templates other travel journals can have, it may not be splurge-worthy for every traveler.

DesignWorks Ink Suede Travel Journal

Travel Diaries - Create your own traveler's diary

Creating a travel diary allows you to capture the magic of your adventures and preserve cherished memories. Explore different ways to create one in this blog article, including how Journey, an innovative online journaling platform, can help you on this remarkable travel journey.

Traveling is an enriching experience that allows us to explore new cultures, meet new people, and create lifelong memories. While we may capture moments through photographs, it's equally important to document our travel experiences in a way that will enable us to relive them in the future. One fantastic way to do this is by creating your own travel diary online. In this blog post, I'll discuss the significance of travel diaries and how using Journey, a popular online travel journaling app, can help you create a unique and personalized travel diary.

Why Keep a Travel Diary?

A travel diary serves as a personal chronicle of your adventures, capturing not only the places you visit but also the emotions, experiences, and lessons learned along the way. Whether you are an avid traveler or embarking on a once-in-a-lifetime trip, a travel diary serves as a treasure trove of emotions, observations, and reflections. Here are a few reasons why keeping a travel diary is beneficial:

my work space.I’m the founder of the company Arttravelling ( travel for artist)

1. Memory Preservation

Memories can fade over time, but a traveler's diary preserves the details, allowing you to relive those special moments and emotions years later. It becomes a cherished keepsake that transports you back to the sights, sounds, and experiences of your travels.

Peace sign by Golden Gate Bridge

2. Self-Reflection and Personal Growth

Documenting your travel experiences in a diary encourages self-reflection. Actor Aisha Sharma Talks About Finding Self-love In The Social Media Era

Aisha Sharma rose to fame with her work as a model for the Kingfisher Calendar. She has been the face of brands such as Pepsi and Lakmé, walked the ramp for some of the country’s most celebrated designers, and even made a mark in the movies with a role in Satyameva Jayate. Beyond the big screen, she is also active on social media where she voices her thoughts on self-care, wellness, fitness and self-love. Travel+Leisure India & South Asia chatted with the spirited actor on her favourite travels, how she strikes a balance between social media and real life, and more.

Excerpts from the interview with Aisha Sharma:

T+l india: how do you adopt self-love practices in your life.

Aisha Sharma:

Aisha Sharma: Over time, I’ve realised just how important self-love is and how it can help set the right tone for your day. One of my favourite ways of doing this is by maintaining a gratitude journal. Before I check my phone upon waking up, I’m at my desk writing down three things that I’m grateful for each day. It’s a practice that can have such an immense impact on your mind and how you feel. When the day ends, I reflect on things that have gone right, and even the little wins. I have a section in my journal where I jot down highlights of my day and if there were any learnings for me.

Another self-care practice I indulge in is movement. Any kind of movement helps–whether it’s going to the gym, swimming, biking or simply walking. This can massively impact your mood in a positive way. My suggestion is, even when you feel like you don’t have it in you to workout or step out for a walk, just stretching your body helps. This is a big one for me and I’ve found it really works.

T+L India: Has your definition of self-love changed over time?

Actor

Aisha Sharma: I definitely think so. The way I practise self-love now, or even think of self-love is so different from years before. I think a big reason for this is also the pandemic. I’ve been practising gratitude for the last seven years, but the way I do it now has changed. I’m more present. The pandemic taught us that nothing in life is guaranteed and everything is fleeting. I have also learned a lot about setting boundaries, being more self-aware, reading energies, etc.

T+L India: What are some of your favourite holiday destinations? Is there a particular destination you keep going back to for wellness or creative inspiration?

Aisha Sharma: There is a quote that says people travel to run away from that dreadful routine that kills all imagination and enthusiasm. I think on some level that’s true for me. However, I also believe it’s more about the enthusiasm that travel brings you and the opportunity of seeing life through a new lens. This year I would like to travel to new destinations that I haven’t been to. One place that always inspires me is Paris ; it changed my sense of fashion. I also keep going back to Chicago to spend time with my family. It’s a place where I can just disconnect and recharge. Indirectly, it fills me up creatively, too.

T+L India: Social media can often be a dual-edged sword. What’s your take on navigating social media and keeping mental health and positivity at the forefront?

Actor interview

Aisha Sharma: I feel very strongly about this. Mental health , in general, is important, and it’s not spoken about enough. Having said that, I think everything has a good and bad side. My take on this is not to compare yourself, especially on social media. It’s one of the biggest and quickest thieves of joy. So, when you’re constantly scrolling online to see who is doing what, where they’re going and what they’re doing, it’s a downhill journey from there. It’s easier said than done, but I would suggest avoiding this at all costs. Seeking validation on social media is a destroyer of mental health. At the same time, you have so many social media pages that are targeted at positivity and humour, these are usually my go-to when I feel like taking a break.

T+L India: Do you believe in taking breaks from social media to reconnect or simply cut off from daily stressors? What is your advice?

Actor interview

Aisha Sharma: So, here’s what works for me: I have tried to devise a way around it. Even when I’m actively posting, I’m not constantly scrolling or checking other accounts. For instance, if someone is posting 20 stories and you are checking all of them, just imagine the amount of time you have spent on someone else’s account! So, I try to keep that to a minimum.

When being on social media gets too overwhelming, I take a few days off to recharge my batteries. My advice would be to unfollow what doesn’t give you joy. Don’t seek validation online and take a break for as long as you want without feeling guilty. Nowadays we hear people say offline is the new luxury. It might just be.

T+L India: What’s next for you in terms of projects and work?

Aisha Sharma: There is a lot happening in terms of work but I’ll speak about it when the time is right. Personally, I’m excited about certain new directions that I’m taking with work.

Today presenter Mishal Husain

Diary: there is something about Mishal Husain. She's just a journalist

Hugh Muir

Despite sterling performances on Today, Mishal Husain, the newest presenter, may be wondering what she has let herself in for. On Monday the Mail wrote in characteristic vein about her contribution to the programme. "For sure, she's an attractive 40-year-old with a lovely complexion, she's beautifully fashioned and trim," said writer Mark Palmer. "But it's not her looks that have got my early morning pulse racing. It's her voice ." That's blokey journalists for you perhaps. But politicians are no better. At the Law Excellence awards on Tuesday, Lib Dem peer and justice minister Lord McNally was hissed after describing her to the crowd as a girl who looks good for having to get up in the morning. Finding himself in a hole, he then dug deeper, protesting that one must be able to compliment someone even in these dark days of political correctness. It didn't wash. So, here's to Lord McNally – whose responsibilities include women offenders – encountering Husain for the verbal battering politicians always receive at 8.10am.

Continuing turbulence in our schools as the Gove-ian revolution turns everything on its head. And a historical spat afflicts Manchester Grammar, the biggest independent day school for boys in the UK. We have already told how one section of Heads Up, Dominic Carman's book of colourful interviews with heads from the independent sector, was excised at the last minute for reasons of libel . But the passage on Manchester Grammar, Carman's old school, survived. He secured an interview with former head Chris Ray, who is quoted claiming that a " vociferous, relatively untalented but supremely arrogant minority of staff at the school" caused him difficulty on arrival in 2004, objecting to the employment of women and running a poster campaign casting him as Goebbels. He left in August, and the school tells the Manchester Evening News that his account isn't recognised . And yet the dispute spills on to Amazon reviews where at least one ex-Manchester Grammar teacher takes up the cudgels. Time won't heal just yet.

Tense times in Westminster as MPs fight for Andrew Mitchell. Yesterday three of the officers judged to have wronged him and their superiors were summoned for a parliamentary Tasering. The most surprising suggestion as to what might happen next came from David Davis, former shadow home secretary and Tory leadership contender who has been tireless in Mitchell's defence. He says that maybe the police should wear microphones and cameras to record interactions with the public . But that seems pretty unlikely considering the fuss that ensued after the Macpherson inquiry into the death of Stephen Lawrence suggested that officers merely produce a duplicated written note of stop-and-search encounters they initiated. That modest change – resisted by the police and many a Tory – was introduced after five years of attrition. Then, in 2010, Theresa May reacted to police pressure by scrapping completely the written record for those merely stopped , as part of her fight against bureaucracy. So it's hard to picture much enthusiasm for non-stop camera surveillance of Britain's bobbies.

Still, with Mitchell sitting pretty, his supporter/confidant Davis has seen his stock rise. Even George Galloway looks on admiringly. "The Tories made a mistake in not making him their leader, in my opinion," the Respect leader tells Total Politics . This will do Davis much more harm than good. Still, it's well meant.

Joyous times as the National Theatre celebrates its 50th anniversary. However, with his memoir Stage Blood, the former associate director Michael Blakemore has rekindled his feud with Peter Hall. The Stage interviews Blakemore, now 85, noting his assertion that "being published at precisely the same time as the National's 50th anniversary is purely coincidental". As for kicking a man when he is down – Sir Peter has become frail – Blakemore says: "It is no satisfaction to me at all that he is not at all well. But at the same time it was Peter who struck the first blow – and I felt I had to put my side of the story, detail by detail." The battle scenes at the National always were the best.

Mytishchi is a mid-sized industrial city in North Moscow Oblast , which borders Moscow to the southwest. It is perhaps Moscow Oblast 's principal industrial center, particularly for machinery and armaments.

A convenient elektrichka route (in fact, the first elektrichka route in Russia) runs frequently all day between Mytishchi and Moscow's Yaroslavsky Train Station. Rapid trains (Sputniks) bound to Pushkino and Bolshevo also stop here.

You can also get here pretty easily by taking the Kaluzhsko-Rizhskaya metro line to the end at Medvedkovo and there catch a bus or marshrutka to the Mytishchi center from the metro station.
