How to take a belfast day trip from dublin (2024).

Belfast day trip from Dublin

It’s time to switch up the scene from Dublin and dive into a fresh landscape without straying too far from Ireland’s shores. While Dublin offers its own unique charm, the island of Ireland is a mosaic of cultures and histories. That’s why I recommend heading north to go on a Belfast day trip from Dublin, where, fun fact, you’ll suddenly be in a new country even though you’re on the same island!

Belfast is the vibrant capital of Northern Ireland and was one of the cities I visited on my first trip to Ireland way back in 2015 on my honeymoon. While it doesn’t get as much love as Dublin, it’s definitely worth a visit, even if just for one day. From driving along the Antrim Coast to exploring a part of the United Kingdom (as Northern Ireland is officially in the U.K.), you’ll love taking a day trip from Dublin to Belfast.

Wondering if Belfast should make the cut in your travel plans? The city is closer to Dublin than you’d think, making it a great day trip option when you want to get out of Dublin. This guide will show you the different ways to visit Belfast from Dublin, so you can choose which one is right for you. I’ll also list some of the best places to visit in Belfast, so taking your trip is easy, and you can just focus on exploring!

How to Get to Belfast From Dublin: The Best Dublin to Belfast Day Trip Options

Heading from Dublin to Belfast isn’t just a geographical shift – it’s a transition between two dynamic worlds. As you contemplate this adventure, you’ll find a range of travel methods, each offering its own distinct flavor. Whether it’s the allure of rolling landscapes seen from a train window, the efficiency of a budget bus ride, or the luxury of a private tour, I’ll help you find the perfect transportation method.

Let’s look at some of the best Dublin to Belfast tours to get you started on your trip.

Flying into Dublin? Here are all the best ways to get from Dublin Airport to the city center .

Train Tours: The Scenic Route

For those who love beautiful views and comfort, train tours offer a perfect blend of both worlds. I always take the train when I’m in Europe if time allows because so rarely do I ever need to take a train in the States, and it’s always so relaxing.

Imagine gazing out of the window as you glide through the stunning Irish countryside, with green fields and cute little villages passing by. The direct train from Dublin to Belfast, also known as the Belfast train, takes just over 2 hours , making it a laidback, efficient way to travel between the two cities.

With stops at Connolly and Heuston stations in Dublin and Lanyon Place in Belfast, you’ll have easy access to the heart of both cities. To ensure a smooth journey, it’s a good idea to book your Belfast train tickets ahead of time so you can sit where you want on your Belfast day trip from Dublin, plus you’ll get the best ticket price on your journey.

Buy your Dublin to Belfast train tickets in advance to get the day and time you want.

Bus Tours: Budget-Friendly Exploration

Bus excursions are a fantastic option for individuals on a tighter budget who don’t want to miss out on any Dublin to Belfast tours. My husband studied abroad in Ireland and loved taking the bus all around the country, as it made traveling much more affordable for him at that time.

Taking a bus between Dublin and Belfast may take a little longer than taking the train, but you get to meet interesting people and hear their tales along the way (or you can always just plug those headphones in if that’s more your style).

Compared to train or private trips, the cost of Dublin to Belfast bus tours are more reasonable, and the guided experience, along with the opportunity to see the beautiful Irish countryside, are all added bonuses. If you want to see the sights of Northern Ireland but don’t want to spend too much money, a bus trip could be the way to go.

Here are some of the top-rated Dublin to Belfast day tours:

  • This day tour takes you to Giants Causeway, Dunluce Castle, Belfast , and more.
  • You can also go on this Giants Causeway and Belfast City bus tour .
  • You’ll love seeing the Titanic Experience along with Belfast city sights.

If you prefer taking the public bus and doing a self-guided tour, you can look up bus times in advance and buy tickets online .

Private Tours: Customized Experiences

Private excursions are perfect for those who want their Dublin to Belfast day trip to be as unique and adaptable as they are. You may make your trip as unique as you are by choosing to see the sights that most interest you and stopping anywhere you like along the way.

You can take private tours in the form of:

Walking tours

Bus excursions

Helicopter rides

Food and wine tours

Cultural experiences

Do your homework on the tour company, check reviews, and ask questions to make sure you get the most out of your Belfast day tour from Dublin private trip. Therefore, plan ahead to guarantee your spot and save money on your tailor-made excursion.

Here are some of the most popular private tours in Belfast:

  • You’ll love going in a private black taxi around the city to see the best sights.
  • History lovers will enjoy this private historical tour of Belfast .
  • I always love doing tours like a local to get an insider’s perspective.

You’ll love going on a 6 day trip to Ireland .

Rent a Car: Unlimited Freedom

Of course, you can always just take the Belfast to Dublin drive into your own hands, and rent a car for the day. I’ve done this multiple times (and the last time, I was in Ireland by myself, pregnant, and stuck in Belfast rush hour traffic, so trust me – if I can do it, you can do it!) and driving a rental car is much easier than you think.

In fact, I wrote a whole guide after that last trip to help others know how to drive in Ireland as a tourist .

Make sure to book your car rental in advance! I love using Discover Cars when I travel.

Must-See Attractions on a Day Trip From Dublin to Belfast

Belfast At Sunset

Between the two cities, Dublin and Belfast , lies a plethora of must-see landmarks that serve as a living testament to Northern Ireland’s rich culture and history. Natural treasures and cultural heritage abound in this area, from the impressive Giant’s Causeway to the majestic Dunluce Castle, built above craggy cliffs along the Antrim Coast that you’ll want to see on your Belfast trip from Dublin.

Whether you’re marveling at:

the unique basalt columns of the Giant’s Causeway

soaking in the coastal route of the Antrim Coast

You’ll find that each attraction makes you fall more in love with Northern Ireland.

Traveling without a vehicle? Here’s how to get around Ireland without a car .

Giant’s Causeway

As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Giant’s Causeway attests to the grandeur and majesty of Mother Nature. This natural marvel, the result of an ancient volcanic eruption, is a sight to behold, with its roughly 40,000 interconnecting basalt columns.

A visit to the Giants Causeway will capture you with its beautiful scenery and intriguing legends, such as the one about the Irish giant who built the causeway so he could cross to Scotland.

Do one of the climbs that leads to a vantage point over the Giant’s Causeway so you can take in its full splendor. If you have time, I highly recommend visiting the adjacent Carrick-a-Rede Bridge , which was one of my favorite stops in Northern Ireland.

The Giant’s Causeway is a breathtaking natural wonder that boasts an intriguing history and otherworldly scenery and is one of the most popular day trips around Belfast .

Book your ticket from Giant’s Causeway from Belfast in advance.

Dunluce Castle

Dunlunce Castle Ireland

Perched dramatically on the edge of a cliff overlooking the wild Atlantic Ocean, the 500-year-old ruins of Dunluce Castle offer a fascinating glimpse into the past. With a history steeped in violence, intrigue, and rebellion, this medieval castle has captured the imagination of visitors and has even served as a filming location for Game of Thrones .

Anyone interested in diving deeper into the castle’s fascinating past can do so by purchasing a ticket to visit Dunluce Castle, which gives them 45 minutes to tour the castle grounds and take in the gorgeous scenery. The ruins of the castle will take you back in time, and you may imagine the lives of those who once lived in this imposing structure.

I almost didn’t stop here on my last Belfast day trip from Dublin, but I had some extra time in my schedule during my 10-day Ireland trip and was glad I chose this.

Antrim Coast

antrim coast

The Antrim Coast is a hidden gem in Northern Ireland, boasting stunning cliffs, sandy beaches, and quaint towns. Traveling down the shore, you’ll love the beautiful panoramas of both land and sea.

Balintoy Harbor, the Dark Hedges, and the Cushendun Caves are just a few of the iconic Game of Thrones filming locations that you can see as you travel down the Antrim Coast. The Antrim Coast is a beautiful place to visit, full of historic sites and scenic places to stop and stretch your legs.

Featuring interactive exhibits, videos, and audio recordings, the Titanic Museum offers a fascinating look into the lives of the ship’s passengers and crew that you’ll want to put on your day trip to Belfast from Dublin itinerary.

For a truly unique perspective, consider taking a guided tour of the shipyard where the Titanic was built, complete with original blueprints and artifacts from the ship. As you explore the museum and delve into the captivating stories of the Titanic, you’ll gain a deeper appreciation for Belfast’s maritime history and the enduring legacy of this tragic vessel.

It’s worth dedicating at least a few hours to the Titanic Museum. I usually whiz through museums (a bad trait of mine), but you couldn’t get me to leave when I stopped here on my honeymoon in 2015. I think we spent at least three hours looking at every little artifact they preserved.

Catherine h, thank you for an amazing day.

We had a great tour with an amazing tour guide! The tour guide (Godfrey) was very educated and attentive to those present on the tour – constantly giving us updates throughout the tour on history, singing songs, playing live music and being very attentive to our questions or needs for the day. The bus driver (Yuri) was very safe considering the dangerous roads that we were traveling on he got us there in a timely manner but also we arrived at every destination with very little concern. overall we would give this tour at 10/10!!

Great guide. Good trip

We are avid GOT fans so we had to book this one. It’s a LONG ride from Dublin but worth it just to see the coastlines and beauty of Ireland. There are a few sites that GOT filmed at which was nice to see. I will be going back to see the actual episodes again to refresh my memory. The guide Dan was great and provided a great deal of info about Dublin, Belfast and all the great little towns we stopped at. He was very entertaining and interesting. Prepare for a very long day of walking. Totally worth it.

Great Day Trip!

We had a great time on this tour and would definitely recommend it to anyone who work like to explore the Irish countryside and some major sites. A lot of the time during the tour is spent on the bus but there are beautiful views along the whole route to enjoy. Our guide, Irial, was lovely! He was very knowledgeable and gave us thorough and interesting information about Irish history, folklore, and the sights we saw. He did a good job of giving us enough information that we felt like we learned a lot but didn’t overwhelm the trip by talking too much. Our favorite stop along the way was the Cliffs of Moher, which we got to spend two hours at. Our driver, Djamel, also did a great job throughout the day and navigated all of the small winding streets with ease. Overall, we had a great time and would definitely recommend this tour!

Titanic and Giant causeway tour was amazing!

Thanks to Finn McCool and their great staff Derrick and John, we enjoyed our visit in Northern Ireland. Derrick is very talented and shared a lot of information to us about Ireland and the places we visited. Thanks keep up the good work!

belfast day tours from dublin

Great tour!

I am a big Game of Thrones fan so when I found out that this tour would coincide with the time I was going to be in Dublin, I HAD to do it. I’m so glad I did. Our tour guide was Derek and our driver was Nikolai and they were a great pairing. Derek was very knowledgeable not only about the destination stops but about the areas along the way. He and Nikolai made my day so pleasant. The Dark Hedges…so awesome!! The Giant’s Causeway…unbelievable! Ballintoy Harbour was just beautiful and it was so cool to see the Game of Thrones sites there. And then Cushendun Caves! I expected to see Melisandre any second! It’s a long day but it was so worth it. I loved every minute of it and I would definitely go on another Finn McCools Tour.

Living History

I took this trip on May 31st with Irial and it was wonderful. Irial’s passion for history mixed with his slightly corny sense of humor made the trip come alive. I really appreciated the stop at the monastery, which no other tour company seems to go to. On our way we came upon a road closure and detour but Irial was able to push through and get us there to explore and experience undisturbed by any other visitors. The Cliffs of Moher and Burren both amazing breathtaking sights that tempt you to the edges of their cliffs. We were blessed with a beautiful day, a wonderful guide and an expert driver.

Best choice hands down!

My friends and I booked two tours with Finn McCool company and were pleasantly surprised!! Our tour guide Derrick and bus driver Andres made sure we got to every point on time and with a smile on our faces. Derrick was extremely approachable, explained every bit of detail with a fun approach and had the bus very engaged and enjoying ourselves. In any case, each tour company makes the same stops so you will see same regardless of what company you pick but Finn McCool will make it fun and hip! Tour prices across the board are steep so I recommend going with them where they genuinely want you to have a great time.

belfast day tours from dublin

One of the best tours you’ll ever do!

I did the tour through Giants Causeway, The Dark Hedges, the Rope bridge and Belfast with Nick. I was worried that it would be too much to do in the day and you wouldn’t get to see everything but that’s not true at all! Nick with timely, but not pressuring us to get everything done and we got to spend so much time at the cause way and the rope bridge on one of the clearest days Ireland has ever gotten I think. Nick was absolutely fantastic and super knowledgeable and went out of his way to help when my wallet was lost. Can not recommened this tour company more!

Amazing Trip, Worth Every Penny

Our tour guide Irial made this trip something extra special. With a 4 hour drive to the Cliffs of Moher, we were a bit worried about the long day but the stories we heard along with way coupled with stops at the lovely Galway and the “baby cliffs”, the day was full and always exciting. The surprise stop at the Kilmacduagh Monastery was especially lovely – it’s a well kept secret from what I can tell, as many locals I’ve mentioned it to haven’t been either!

07:30 | Depart Dublin

We leave Dublin and travel towards Northern Ireland, taking in the breathtaking views of rural Ireland along the way, including a picturesque drive through the Glens of Antrim and along the coast. On clear days enjoy views of Rathlin Island and perhaps the coastline of Scotland across the water. There will of course also be pauses for light refreshments along the way.

(UNESCO) Giant's Causeway

Travel in the footsteps of the Irish legend Finn McCool, who defeated the Scottish giant Benandonner all in the name of love as you cross his walkway at the Giant's Causeway, one of the greatest wonders of the natural world. The Causeway is formed from over 40,000 hexagonal basalt columns produced from volcanic activity over 60 million years ago. Here we will provide you with some time of your own (at least two hours) to explore the area and perhaps take in lunch to taste the local cuisine.

NB: Your driver will advise as regards lunch options, taking weather and local operational considerations into account on the day of your tour.

Giant's Causeweay Visitor Centre fee (GBP 15.00 / EUR 17.00) is included in the price of this tour

Belfast City

The afternoon we arrive in Northern Ireland’s capital, Belfast. Here, you will have the difficult choice between visiting Titanic Belfast, an award- winning exhibition in what was once the world’s leading shipyard OR a Black Taxi Tour around the city’s historic and political neighbourhoods.

A) TITANIC BELFAST This exhibition opened exactly 100 years after the tragic sinking of RMS Titanic in the very docklands where the ship was built. Through both original artifact and virtual reality exhibits, you’ll experience the epic efforts of some 40,000 people who worked on the ship’s creation and the tragedy that was her destruction.

B) BLACK TAXI TOUR Take a driven tour around the historically charged neighbourhoods of Belfast with their renowned political murals and visit the peace wall (a security fence dividing the housing estates of the British Unionists and Irish Nationalists). Quench your curiosity about the period of conflict in Irish history (1969-1998) known as the Troubles with your expert local taxi guide.

Our stop in Belfast will last approximately 2 hours and the entrance fee for either Titanic Belfast or the Black Taxi is included in the price of your ticket. NB: Unfortunately due to the distance and hours involved there is no time to enjoy both options.

19:30 | Return to Dublin

Your small- group Northern Ireland tour will sadly come to an end at approx. 19.30 back in Dublin. Enjoy ample time for refreshments and evening dinner arrangements upon your return.

  • 07:00am - Intercontinental Hotel, Ballsbridge (Simmonscourt Road)
  • 07:10am - The Merrion Hotel (Merrion Street)
  • 07:15am - Shelbourne Hotel (St. Stephen’s Green)
  • 07:20am - Westin Hotel (Fleet Street)
  • 07:30am - The Gresham Hotel (O’Connell Street)

  • Margaret O 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles I highly recommend this tour which was great fun, interesting and informative, thanks to Seamus our excellent guide. A trip not to be missed. I can’t fault it and highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys history. The day was great fun and very informative thanks to Seamus our excellent guide. Much of the time we were out of the coach and exploring which was good. We were fortunate that the rain and wind kept off until the end of the day but then a hat and waterproof coat were definitely needed on the hill at Loughcrew tombs. The stops for coffee and lunch were all well timed, as was the whole day. Read more Written March 4, 2024
  • Freedom06517637628 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles It was a wet and rainy day... The guide can make the tour special. Unfortunately, we had a really nice guy who was an excellent driver. However, he wasn't irish and had limited knowledge of Ireland. He had the facts about the places we were going, but couldn't add any stories or local flavour. The day was cold, rainy and miserable so we ended up not staying very long at any stop and finished the day early. The stop at Blarny castle had us parked at an amazing wool/irish store - wish they had mentioned that in the tour as it had an awesome selection and great prices! We thankfully had an hour to explore the store and get lunch (cafeteria style). The gardens were a no-go due to the weather, Also, the steps up to the blarny stone were extremely slippery and narrow. Once you are up there, they will take your picure kissing the stone and then you can purchase it in the tourist shop down below. An excellent day despite the weather. He was very accommodating. The trip was great, a long day but plenty of stops and bathroom breaks. The Irish countryside and Castles are beautiful. Derek gave us a good history lesson and some wonderful Irish tunes. I would highly recommend this tour. Read more Written February 14, 2024

Loved the Cliffs of Moher and the traditional Irish pub that we visited. The staff and food were amazing!! The day was full of the most beautiful and incredible views. Derrick made it even more special. He was fantastic with everything he did from his driving, guidance, singing and recommendations. It was so lovely listening to the history of Ireland too. Thanks Derrick 😊 Highly recommend this trip! Read more Written February 9, 2024
  • Nomads_on_Tour 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Great day - well worth the long drive Excellent day trip back and forward across Ireland - coach driver and guide Barry has the patience of an Irish Saint, proof was visible in his professionalism virtually have to herd cats throughout the day we were on tour! Superb driver - impressive to watch him - and so knowledgeable about the subject matter he tells us about. The Cliffs of Moher are surreal, a real highlight though was mixing with the locals at nearby McGann’s Pub for an excellent lunch. Great day - thanks for your work Bryan, and the good times! The wind was incredibly strong and the ocean was wild, very impressive views. Despite the driving conditions were not the best, we felt safe as our guide was excellent driver and good story-teller - learned a lot about the Irish history. The front seats are the best. Probably will return in summer for the next trip and would go to Aran islands as well. Read more Written January 29, 2024

He made the tour super fun with his commentary about the country’s buildings, history and random facts. The weather was not great, but that did not dampen our spirits. We got to see so much of the countryside from Doolin to Galway and lots in between. We stopped for lunch and a few other notable points of interest, not to mention the cliffs which were amazing. The tour guide, Jonathan, clearly had a deep and personal connection with his homeland and was enthusiastic in sharing it with us from the moment we left before dawn until we returned after dark. He shared his knowledge of Irish history with us, and was proud and engaging with his storytelling/singing. Having said that, he knew when it was appropriate to let us relax peacefully with quiet music while he drove the bus smoothly all the way across the country. Read more Written January 3, 2024

  • sebastianmZ4064IA 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Unforgettable Christmas Day Experience! Imagine you travel from 3,000 miles away to see the Cliffs of Moher on Christmas Day. Months of planning have gone by including whole two months from the date we reserved, thousands of dollars have been spent. Finally, the day arrives. You wake up at the crack of dawn, walk to the meeting point because there are no taxis, buses nor trams on Christmas Day, only to find the meeting point empty with no one else but your family. You immediately call the tour operator, but the phone goes straight to voicemail so you call TripAdvisor (Viator) to see what’s happening. After a brief wait period, the woman on the phone says they cancelled the tour on 10/31/23 and they sent messages to all patrons. We obviously never got a message, the system still said the trip was confirmed on Christmas Day and never said otherwise. So, if you can imagine all this, you can guess if I recommend this company or not. Thanks for ruining a Christmas, Irish Day Tours! Read more Written December 25, 2023

  • READ MORE: Fiona Apple – ‘Fetch The Bolt Cutters’ review: an intoxicating and excoriating listen that will cut deep

Shared today (March 7), the new single comes as the latest teaser for the band’s upcoming seventh album ‘Light Verse’. It is set for release on Sub Pop on April 26, and has already been previewed by the release of lead single ‘You Never Know’.

Titled ‘All In Good Time’, the second taster of the LP sees the band join forces with Fiona Apple for a solemn, stripped-back song, which explores themes of betrayal and patience.

“ All in good time, I gave it my best/ I was alone ’til I found myself/ Grew up to be a man more or less/ All in good time, ” sings Sam Beam in the opening lines, before Apple chimes in: “ All in good time, I drifted away/ I ran my mouth ’til I’d nothing to say/ You broke my heart, then I was okay/ All in good time. ”

“Her voice is a miracle that sounds like both a sacrifice and a weapon at the same time,” said Beam of working with the ‘90s legend (via Stereoboard ).

Check out the moving track in full below, and visit here to pre-order the album.

As well as sharing the latest preview of their seventh album, Iron & Wine have also announced details of a UK and European tour, which is set to kick off later this year.

Comprising of 16 shows – eight of which are in the UK – the new run of dates will run through the latter half of the year, and follow a previously-scheduled North American leg of the tour.

Starting two months after they wrap up the US shows in Nashville (August 24), the first of the new dates will take place at the Mandela Hall in Belfast on October 22, followed by a slot at the Vicar Street venue in Dublin the next day.

From there, the UK shows run up until the end of the month and comprise shows in Edinburgh, Manchester, Bristol, Birmingham and London, before wrapping up at the Junction in Cambridge on October 31.

The European tour dates all take place throughout the first half of November, and launch with an opening night in Copenhagen. Other gigs across the continent include shows in Stockholm, Oslo, Hamburg, Amsterdam and more, and come to a close with a show in Antwerp on November 15.

Tickets go on sale tomorrow (March 8) at 10am local time. Visit here to buy yours and check out a full list of new tour dates below.

About Two Door Cinema Club:

Two Door Cinema Club mix guitar-driven post-punk hooks with dancey, electronic polish. They first gained attention with their 2010 debut album Tourist History and singles ‘Something Good Can Work’ and ‘Undercover Martyn’. The band have continued to evolve, peaking at #2 in the UK’s official Albums Chart with 2012’s Beacon , and experimenting with Giorgio Moroder-esque disco and synth pop on 2016’s Gameshow . The album also hit the UK Top 10 and paved the way for 2019’s new wave-inspired False Alarm and 2022’s Keep On Smiling .

Hailing from Bangor and Donaghadee, Northern Ireland, Two Door Cinema Club comprises lead vocalist, guitarist and programmer Alex Trimble, guitarist and vocalist Sam Halliday, and bassist and vocalist Kevin Baird. The trio began playing as Two Door Cinema Club in 2007 and continue to stand the test of time in 2024 and beyond.

With a back catalogue of five hugely successful records, sold out shows and headline festival slots across the globe, the band returned last year in 2023 with new single ‘Sure Enough’, alongside brand new U.S tour dates and additional UK arena dates in Hull, Doncaster and Liverpool. This year sees the band return to the Main Stage at Reading and Leeds Festival for a seventh time since their debut set on the NME/Radio 1 tent back in 2010.

One of the most pro-Palestinian nations isn't in the Middle East. It's Ireland

Lauren Frayer headshot

Lauren Frayer

Why is Ireland one of the most pro-Palestinian nations in the world? A shared history of occupation, sectarian conflict — and past experience with a U.K. colonial official named Balfour.

STEVE INSKEEP, HOST:

One of the most pro-Palestinian nations in the world is not an Arab- or Muslim-majority country. It's not even in the Middle East. Polls show Ireland has some of the highest support for Palestinians. NPR's Lauren Frayer traveled to Dublin and Belfast to find out why.

LAUREN FRAYER, BYLINE: Fatin Al Tamimi immigrated to Ireland in 1988. She's Palestinian, and she wears the hijab, a Muslim headscarf.

FATIN AL TAMIMI: When I came first to this country in 1988, there weren't many Palestinians. There weren't many Muslims, even. And people thought I am a nun, and they will always - oh, bless you, sister.

FRAYER: But she says her Irish neighbors were immediately supportive of the Palestinian struggle.

AL TAMIMI: They come to me, and they would say, we know it all. We've been through that.

FRAYER: Al Tamimi's hijab and the checkered Palestinian kaffiyeh scarf that she wears might mark her out for hostility elsewhere. But in Ireland, she says people literally offer her hugs in the street.

AL TAMIMI: Especially when you - they see the kaffiyeh - oh, some of them will walk by me and say, free, free Palestine. Yeah. Yeah.

FRAYER: Since October 7, Al Tamimi has helped organize huge pro-Palestinian rallies in Dublin...

(SOUNDBITE OF ARCHIVED RECORDING)

AL TAMIMI: Hello, everyone. Salaam aleikum.

FRAYER: ...Where the crowd is overwhelmingly white and Irish.

MICHELLE CLARKE: I'm a Catholic Irish girl, you know?

FRAYER: Michelle Clarke founded a local Irish group called Mams Against Genocide.

CLARKE: When I see the pictures of the little kids, I just think of my own, and that's why I'm here.

FRAYER: Kirsten Farrelly is another of the mums.

KIRSTEN FARRELLY: Because we were colonized and oppressed and occupied, we immediately, in our DNA - we feel it and go, oh, my God. And it's the same with South Africa. It's the same with South America. All these scars are being opened up in us when we see what's happening to the Palestinians.

FRAYER: She says Ireland identifies with the Global South because while it may be a mostly white European country, a little over a hundred years ago, it was a British colony. And before the creation of Israel, Palestine was, too. It was called British Mandate Palestine.

DAVID CHAMBERS: Was British - it was a British state. It's Britain. It's just colonization. It's Britain.

FRAYER: That history is part of why the Irish identify with Palestinians, says David Chambers, better known as Blindboy, one of Ireland's most popular podcasters. He says there are uncanny connections. For example, Britain's 1917 Balfour Declaration, which laid the groundwork for Israel's creation. The man behind it...

CHAMBERS: Arthur Balfour - he was also in Ireland and was quite brutal in Ireland.

FRAYER: Balfour was a colonial governor of Ireland - also the Black and Tans, a brutal British police force that killed Irish civilians in the early 20th century.

CHAMBERS: When the Black and Tans left Ireland, these same people were sent to Palestine, to Mandatory Palestine, by Winston Churchill.

FRAYER: Where they exercised similar colonial control over Jews and Arabs.

UNIDENTIFIED REPORTER #1: Palestine - and in the Jerusalem trouble areas, British armored columns make a tour of the main highways.

FRAYER: One of the British governors of Jerusalem even said that Israel could be a, quote, "loyal Jewish Ulster in a sea of hostile Arabism." Now, Ulster refers to Northern Ireland, which Britain still controls. His idea was that Israel might be a British foothold in the Arab world. Now, all of this history influences modern-day Irish politics. Ireland's prime minister, Leo Varadkar, has issued some of Europe's harshest criticism of Israel. In early November, he told reporters of Israel's offensive in Gaza.

PRIME MINISTER LEO VARADKAR: What I'm seeing unfolding at the moment isn't just self-defense. It looks - it resembles something more approaching revenge.

FRAYER: And the Palestinian ambassador to Ireland, Jilan Wahba Abdalmajid, told NPR she feels incredibly supported by Irish officials.

JILAN WAHBA ABDALMAJID: I always find open doors - open doors, open hearts, and they listen.

FRAYER: But there is another, darker chapter of history here. Ireland was neutral in World War II.

UNIDENTIFIED REPORTER #2: For in Dublin, there are still German and Japanese diplomatic representatives.

FRAYER: The Irish president sent condolences on Adolf Hitler's death.

UNIDENTIFIED REPORTER #2: His refusal to meet the British and American requests to break off relationships with the Axis...

FRAYER: And afterward, Ireland allowed some Nazis to settle here. Historians say Irish neutrality was more about opposing Britain than out of any love for the Nazis. Ireland had only just gained independence from Britain about 20 years earlier.

ANDY CLARKE: When people say Ireland was antisemitic in World War II, it's almost weaponized against people in Ireland who want to speak out against Israel.

FRAYER: Historian Andy Clarke, who writes the popular Tanistry blog, says it was more of an enemy-of-my-enemy-is-my-friend kind of thing.

CLARKE: Ironically enough, Ireland started off as pro-Israel. A lot of Irish people back in the early 20th century identified with this idea of this displaced people who have gone through turmoil throughout history, just like the Irish. And the idea of them getting their own state, their own home, appealed to a lot of Irish people. They said, let's give them somewhere safe.

FRAYER: It was only well after Israel's founding, he says, when it annexed and occupied more Arab land, that Irish public opinion flipped and flipped pretty dramatically. Today, Irish support for the Palestinians feels most pronounced in Northern Ireland, which is governed by the British and where Irish nationalists compare their situation to Palestinians under Israeli occupation.

(SOUNDBITE OF MUSIC)

FRAYER: And that's where we met The Shan Vans, an indie rock group that sings in the Irish language about the Palestinian struggle.

THE SHAN VANS: (Singing in Irish).

FRAYER: In a disused warehouse, they're rehearsing a new song about Irish hunger strikers in British jails a generation ago and Palestinians in Israeli ones. Lead singer Jake Mac Siacais translates the lyrics for me.

JAKE MAC SIACAIS: So it's - we say (singing in Irish). The Irish is (speaking Irish), so laying naked in my cell. And then as that verse progresses, we sing, there is a light far off in Palestine.

(Singing in Irish).

And that last sort of energetic crescendo of the song is just singing the light is off, the light is off, the light is off in Palestine.

FRAYER: On this island in the far north of Europe, the Palestinian struggle echoes everywhere.
