Sending postcards to friends, family, or loved ones during travel can be a great way to show your affection, as well as giving people an idea of where you are. Picking a postcard with the right image, and understanding the typical layout of postcards, will ensure that your note reaches the correct person. Also, knowing how to construct a message to your recipient in a way that captures your trip without running out of room will make the postcard worthwhile for both of you.
Formatting Your Postcard
- Postcards can be found at any souvenir store, grocery stores, or on the streets of popular tourist areas.
Tip: If you are travelling, find a postcard with a photograph of your favorite place so far on your trip.
- Do not write on the front of the postcard, as the postal service won’t look for information on the front.
- Make your writing as clear and legible as possible. Use a ballpoint pen rather than a felt tip pen; it is less likely to smear if it gets wet.
- You can purchase stamps at any post office.
- Make sure that you put the stamp in the back of the postcard in the top-right corner. Putting it anywhere else increases the chances of the card getting lost.
- July 4, 2017
- Grand Canyon, Arizona
- If you want to be formal, write: “Dear, (name)."
- If you want to be less formal, you could start with “Hello, (name)!"
Tip: After writing your message, do not forget to sign your name on the bottom left of the postcard, too.
Writing the Postcard
- Add as many details as possible but be conscious of how much room you have.
- If the card is from a specific place on your trip, such as the Grand Canyon, consider limiting your description to that place. You can always send more postcards from other places.
- “I’ve been thinking about you."
- “I wish you were here with me!”
Tip: Beginning with your thoughts of the other person will make them feel loved.
Note: You don't have to be detailed. Something short, like "It is so hot here!" or "It was so cold, I needed two coats!" would be plenty.
- This is not absolutely necessary, but it's a great idea if the meal is something that the location is famous for.
- If you plan to head home soon, end the card with, “I’ll see you soon,” or, “I can’t wait to see you!”
Avoiding Common Mistakes
Tip: If you need to write to someone about something personal, consider writing a letter instead. Remember, the information on the back of the postcard is visible.
- If you have too much to write about, consider sending a letter in addition to the postcard. Keep the message short and brief on the card, and write a longer message in a letter.
Tip: If you will be moving a lot during your trip, skip the return address. By the time the person receives your postcard and sends a letter back, you may have moved on.
- The note itself does not have to be too neat, as long as your recipient can read it.

About This Article
To write a postcard, choose a postcard with an image that represents your travels, like a photo of the Eiffel Tower if you're vacationing in France. Flip the postcard over and write the recipient's name and address on the lines provided on the right side of the postcard. Next, write a brief message to the recipient on the left side. Keep in mind that this message will be visible to everyone, since postcards aren't mailed in an envelope! Then, add the postage to the top right and mail it off! How to Write a Postcard: 15 Postcard Writing Tips
Postcards are for much more than just your travels these days. They’re becoming a more popular way than ever for people to get in touch with their friends and family on a regular basis, for special occasions or just to touch base. But… writing a postcard can actually become quite an intimidating experience when you finally come face to face with its blank side. That’s why we’ve created this guide on how to write a postcard to a friend or a family member.
Not found the right postcard yet? The MyPostcard app lets you design your own postcard with the help of 70,000+ templates, so you can add your own photos and memories. Once you’ve added a message and recipient, we professionally print and send your card for you anywhere worldwide. The best part? If you’re lost for words, you can simply use one of our free messages and quotes available to past into your card on the app.
How to write a postcard when you can’t think of anything to say…
Often the most difficult thing is actually starting! You can open your postcard with ‘Dear/est’, a simple ‘hello’ or ‘hey’ or something a little more romantic like ‘To the one I love’ or ‘To my best friend in the world’
Below you’ll find some ideas on how to start a postcard, beyond your greeting.
#1 Where are you?
Whether you’re traveling or writing from home, how about starting off by simply telling your postcard pal where you are?
If you’re traveling, talk about the hotel you’re staying at, maybe mention the awesome outdoor pool they have or the to-die-for cocktails that the waiter makes to order.
If you’re writing your postcard from home talk about the room where you’re sitting as you write their card, or where you’ve just come from. It will bring a sense of space and intimacy to your friend as they imagine where you were sat as you wrote their postcard.
Here’s a sample text for a travel postcard to a friend:
Dearest Molly, I’m writing this postcard while looking at the Leaning Tower of Pisa from my spot outside the cafe. You know what? It really is very crooked. A waiter just brought me my ‘Crema Di Caffè’ – I don’t have to feel silly saying that now either! I think I was born in the wrong country… Not space for much more – missing you lots! Your friend in Italy
#2 What are you doing there?
Send notes to others about your adventures. Consider telling them why you’ve decided to visit that place or what you’ve done while you’re there. Mention what brought you to your destination and how you got there. And most importantly who with!
Or, if you’re writing from home, you can talk about a brief instance that occurred that made you reflect on your day or on your friendship to your postcard pal. Think about the reason you’re writing to them right now!
Here’s another example for you!
Hey gang, Today we met up with a whole group of tourists who were visiting Rome for just one day like us. Well, we had a lot of fun and visited some awesome places. They were cool… But am I bad person for wishing it was all of you instead? 😀 Next time, you’re coming with us! Speak soon, Your friend
#3 What’s happening?
What kind of events, past or upcoming have you participated in lately? Are there any key points you’d like to share that your recipient would be especially interested in? You can try including travel tips for the region that you are visiting. Or if you’re writing from home, talk about local tourist spots that you’d like to show off if your recipient ever comes to visit.
By the way: You can even send them pictures of what’s going down , if this is one of those times when pictures really do say a 1000 words! If you think your photography skills aren’t up to scratch, then read the ultimate travel photography guide for beginners and send your personalized postcard !
Need an example? Here’s a sample postcard message:
Hey Mo, So you remember we used to talk about visiting Berlin all the time? Well guest who’s spontaneously there… ME! Fun fact – did you know the Berlin Wall that separated East and West Germany is still up in places? They’ve reclaimed it with awesome street art which they call the East Side Gallery. We need to come back here together soon! Greetings from Germany! Elle
#4 What’s cooking?
Send recipes and share local cuisine establishments. Add notes about your favorite dishes and which restaurants served them to you. If you’re traveling, what are the local dishes that are served and what’s the best thing about them? Take note of foreign condiments and table manners.
Here’s how to write your foodie postcard:
Dear mom, You always say I should try it before I say I don’t like it. Well, I’m writing this postcard to tell you, you’d be proud! I’ve tried a ton of new stuff since I’ve been in Asia. I haven’t loved all of them, but there’s this one dish that I will cook for you when I’m home. Aloo Tikki – I added a photo of it on the front of this card. YUM! Love you lots, Your favorite daughter
Discover 5 quick tips to make your food photography stand out here. Your photo of the local dishes is sure to look like it belongs nowhere better than on your postcard (or in your tummy) once you’ve mastered them!
#5 Daily greetings
A postcard is a fun and simple way to send greetings at any time of the year. Send well wishes that reflect your thoughts on your nephew’s big soccer game. Or how excited you are about your sister’s pregnancy. Recount special moments that you’ve shared and silly little things that have occurred in your daily routine. Ask for return postcards that answer your questions about what your recipient has been up to recently.
If you need help persuading them to, try using one of these 8 convincing reasons why you should be writing postcards …
#6 Share interesting facts
Who doesn’t enjoy sharing what they’ve learned with others? Send your friends or classmates super scholarly information that interests you. Create helpful bullet points that give your reader a snippet of the info. Sending some random facts is always fun! This is a great idea if you’re sending a postcard from home.
Speaking of facts, here’s 9 insane fun facts about the post that you don’t know. And your friends won’t know either! Number 6 may be the weirdest thing I’ve ever heard of.
Write about establishments that you’re visiting or places you’ve stayed. Share thoughts on the staff, cleanliness, and other observations that you’ve made. Try to keep it simple. And remember your postcard is traveling wide open in the post where anybody that handles it could read what is written.
Here’s an sample idea for your postcard review:
Hi everyone, We just checked out of our ‘exquisite beach-side hotel’. Honestly, I’d give it 3 stars. Rude staff and we got given the wrong room but on the other hand… the pool, the cocktails, the views! Changed my mind, I’m giving it 4 stars. Okay, 4 and a half. Love you all xxxx
By the way, if you want to read the reviews before going to your destination rather than having to write negative ones after, then trust us, there are ways and means! Here are the 10 vacation apps that you should download before your next vacation.
#8 Writing a postcard with local news
Whether you’re sending a postcard across town or across the world, news events in your local area are also important to people who love you. Talk about headlines or quirky news from the back of the newspaper. Laugh about the newscaster’s shirt on your local television network or whatever takes your fancy!
#9 ‘Wish you were here!’
Traveling creates a distance among loved ones that can only be cured with a postcard. Send a note that reminds your recipient how much you miss them. This could be during a long traveling spell or just because. If you’re traveling, write about scenes and events that remind you of your friend, or your mom, or whomever you’re writing to. Write about how it made you feel and why it was significant in your memory. Use the classic, wish you were here, if you need to!
By the way, if you’ve received a lot of postcards recently, but you don’t know what to do with them all, then we have 16 easy DIY projects for your old postcards .
#10 What’s the weather like?
Everybody likes knowing what the weather is like where their loved ones are. We’ll never know why exactly! But it not only creates a sense of security in knowing the sender is safe but also lets them imagine themselves into the scenery a little. Talk about past storms, snow and hail and what you were doing when it started coming down. Mention how long the air conditioning was running during the last heat spell and hot it was.
A postcard message example? Coming right up!
Hey Dad, I don’t want to make you jealous, but the weather here in Malta is just amazing! You’d be baking like a tomato by now if you were here. It’s a big improvement on what we thought it’d be when we got here too. It was a bit grey and miserable. Anyway, just updating you so you recognize me at the airport in two weeks with my gorgeous tan. Sending all my love!
Writing postcards to stay in touch? Here’s when to send postcards and how to write them…
#11 studies & work.
Postcard writing is all about creating a short note that provides enough info for the friend reading it to get a glimpse into your day or your life. Sharing little details about what interests you at work or school is a pretty easy way to keep in touch, especially when you’re busy. Do you have an update? Maybe you got an A in one of your topics? Share your success!
Whether you’ve received an award or you know someone that has, this is a great time to write a postcard. Notify others of your accomplishments or congratulate them on theirs.
Create funny quizzes and games with your friends that include trivia or even mathematical equations. Give them a time frame with which they have to respond. Don’t forget the answers to your questions!
#14 Book recommendations
Write to your fellow book lovers briefly describing books that you’ve read and what they’re about. Include information about the author or write out a small snippet from somewhere in the story to lure the recipient in or just let them know what you loved about the book!
#15 Writing postcards for weddings, birthdays and anniversaries
Postcard writing is a perfect way to reminisce about events that you’ve attended with your loved ones. Or to talk about these milestones and how they affected you or will affect you. Write to your daughter about her birthday and how you remember the day she was born. Explain the joy of that special day. This is especially cute if you’re celebrating their birthday from a long distance .
Write to your mom and dad when they celebrate their silver anniversary. Tell them what you appreciate about their relationship and how proud you are of them. Surprise your husband or wife with a postcard professing your undying love. Remind him or her of a comical event at your wedding or anniversary.
P.S. If you need help writing something in your birthday card which really stands out, we’ve written a helpful guide specifically for you!
Wrapping up writing your postcard
Keep your salutations short when closing your note with phrases like “love always”, or “see you soon”. Don’t forget to date your postcard so that you and your recipients can reminisce about the event later.
When you’re ready to write your postcard, choose a classic personalizable design that fits well with your words and you’re ready to go!

107 Incredible Postcard Designs to Inspire Your Creativity
There’s one little secret every print designer needs to know: with the right design, postcards are arguably the most effective form of print marketing for businesses. People don’t throw them away as often as other direct mail, and the most creative postcards live on as collectible artwork. Many of us hang them on the fridge, display them on memory boards or paste them into scrapbooks.
When designing custom postcards for your clients , keep this “second life” in mind and strive to create something people will cherish for years. Of course, obtaining design immortality is easier said than done, so we’ve rounded up some of our favorite postcard designs to give you some fresh ideas.

College and University Postcards
Postcards make a lot of sense for promoting college and universities because they can be easily distributed to their target audience. They can be circulated by hand, placed around campus, pinned to bulletin boards or mailed directly to students, their parents and alumni. College and university postcards usually reflect the fun, youthful energy of student life.

Design and Branding Postcards
For people and companies that specialize in the visual arts, branded postcards don’t just promote the company—they often serve as an example of the actual product, especially for graphic designers who create their own self-promotions. These postcards help to publicize those who excel in one or more areas of design, including fashion, illustration, and visual branding.

Event Postcards
Postcards are a great, easy way to advertise for a special event or festival. As an added bonus, they act as a take-away souvenir for the event itself. Postcards don’t have enough canvas space to go into too much detail about the event, so these designs typically focus on the main selling points – who, what, where and when – to provide a snapshot of the event as a whole.

Museum Postcards
We’re not talking about the postcards you find in a museum’s gift shop—these are the postcard designs that compel you to visit the museum in the first place. Since museums often have special events or temporary exhibits, postcards make for a smart marketing choice because they’re cheap and easy to make. Likewise, many people hold onto their museum postcards as a memento of their experiences, since most museums frown on photography.

Non-Profit Postcards
Postcards are just one of the many ways that nonprofit groups drum up awareness for their causes. The medium is accessible and affordable, allowing organizations to spread their message far and wide. Real Estate Postcards
The real estate industry uses postcards as a way to connect to the people looking to buy or sell property, but creating print media for this field can be tricky. If the brand is selling a large quantity of spaces in one location, then the postcard can focus on the location or property itself. However, since it’s not cost effective to print up a bunch of postcards to sell just one building or home, many real estate postcards will instead promote the company selling the properties or focus on recently sold homes as an example of what the real estate agent typically deals with.

Save the Date Postcards
When you think of save the date postcards, you probably immediately think of weddings—but these useful reminders have been in existence well before the wedding industry got ahold of them. Save the dates are a sort of informal invitation, a way to let people know that something is out on the horizon. They’re often used by your clients to promote upcoming business events or sales, and are typically followed by a more formal or detailed invitation. This means that they work best when they’re simple and to the point.

When you travel, you might end up sending some postcards back home to your friends and loved ones—but the places you travel to (and the agencies that get you there) often use postcards to get you to embark in the first place. Both types of postcards have similar design goals—to capture the feeling of the location and entice people to come.

Has College Admissions Returned to a Normal Level of Crazy?
College admissions counselors weigh how recent changes—the end of affirmative action, the reinstatement of required standardized testing—are affecting results for applicants to the class of 2028.
Every item on this page was chosen by a Town & Country editor. We may earn commission on some of the items you choose to buy.
As high school seniors await admission letters from colleges and universities to start arriving in late March, it’s hard not to try to read the tea leaves in terms of how this admission season will play out, especially given the massive changes that have altered the landscape. Most notably, last summer the Supreme Court banned affirmative action in college admissions, ostensibly doing away with the box where applicants historically checked off their ethnic background. And with processing delays with the new FAFSA financial aid form, many colleges have not yet received financial data from families, information that can impact admissions decisions.
All of this has already stressed-out students and families even more so, desperate for some—any—sign of what’s to come. At this point, the only data available to unpack is early decision results. And the upshot is?
“I’m not seeing anything that shocks me,” said Chris Teare, an independent college counselor based in Connecticut and Florida. “I think there’s a lot of uncertainty until this whole (season) plays out. Though uncertainty is no comfort to parents and students, who right now are sitting around trying to figure out what to do with their anxiety until regular decision results roll in.”
Sarah Langford, an independent college counselor in Chicago, said that of three students who applied to Brown early, one was rejected and two were deferred. The students were all white and well-resourced. But they aren’t “rich enough to be putting buildings on campus,” she said.
“They had great activities, great grades and scores, but they’re not what enrollment is calling ‘institutional priorities.’ They’re not rural or first-generation or ethnically diverse.”
Langford said that although the diversity box has been done away with, colleges are “getting around” that with their essay questions. “Northwestern is a great example. For decades,” she said, Northwestern required applicants to write an essay based on the prompt: Why Northwestern?
“This year they had three essay questions and none of them were, Why Northwestern? They were questions about community and background. Those words are like, bing, bing bing—tell us something that we can’t see with the box not being checked.
“I think colleges that still care about diversity found a way to learn about it that had nothing to do with checking a box.”
Langford has had some success stories so far, though. One student applied ED2 (which has a slightly later deadline that Early Decision) to Boston College and was accepted, and another got into Vanderbilt ED2.
Nat Smitobol, a master admissions counselor at IvyWise, agreed that the SCOTUS decision has so far not led to a major shift in acceptance letters for white and Asian students. He said that anecdotally he saw more of those students apply early decision, thinking, “‘Now we have a chance!’”
“But you end up competing against each other,” he said. “So it’s just as hard, if not harder, for those kids.”
Harvard, meanwhile, received 7,921 early action applicants this year, down from 9,553 last year. Similarly, its early acceptance rate rose to 8.7 percent from 7.5 percent last season.
Higher acceptance rates are also expected next year from Yale and Dartmouth, which recently reinstated standardized tests as requirements to apply. (Schools that switched to a test-optional policy after Covid saw their applicant pools swell as more students who didn’t necessarily have stellar test scores, applied.) Smitobol said he was relieved to see that shift and expects other schools to follow suit, resulting in a “normalization” of the admissions landscape. “Then we won’t have the facade of test-optional. It was never test-optional. In the data that’s available, most colleges have a much higher acceptance rate” for students who took the ACT or SAT.
“The bubble is bound to burst.”
That said, Smitobol said his ED students, who come from a variety of ethnic backgrounds, were admitted to schools such as Stanford, the U.S. Naval Academy, and the University of Virginia.
Another wrench thrown in this admissions season was technical glitches with the new FAFSA financial aid form , which was introduced last year. The new format, meant to be more streamlined and easy to fill out, was rife with processing delays, meaning that not all families’ data was sent to colleges on time. This means that many students will receive acceptance letters without financial aid offers, which will make it harder to evaluate choices. Colleges, meanwhile, will not have the full financial picture of all their applicants, which may affect their own decision-making.
College counselors are also reporting a number of deferrals this year. Part of this may be explained by the FAFSA mess—colleges are waiting to make a final decision until all of an applicant’s paperwork is filed. It may also be a function of the fact that early decision applicants tend to be from wealthier backgrounds. EDers often have hired independent college counselors who advise them to apply early because of the higher admit rates. And those who apply early don’t have the opportunity to compare offers from other colleges as they would in regular decision, reducing applicants to those who are more certain they can afford whatever is offered.
For colleges looking to draw up a more diverse class, it’s understood that the regular decision pool will have more of those applicants. Thus strong ED candidates may have been deferred so that admissions officers can compare them against a more varied pool.
Langford said that some students are relieved to be deferred, feeling that, “‘They’ll still consider me!’
But she noted, “If they’re not an institutional priority, they’re going to be competing with the kids who are, and who are also really, really bright. They have everything in terms of grades and scores, but they also might have the life story and life experience that the first round of ED kids didn’t have.”
“Looking at individual situations, I think the results are mixed” so far, said Teare. “I’ve been told by colleagues that some of their kids got clobbered in ED. But I had kids get into their first choices ED, schools that were reaches. He noted, though, that in at least one case, “they had nice, other pieces to their application that made it work. They were legacies at a place that still cares about legacy, and a family from means that’s been very generous.”
Teare said his main concern right now was the mental health of the students waiting for results. Parents, he said, should be prepared to give their kids a hug “for a yes,” and “more hugs for a no.’”
“I try to make them understand, you do everything you can to prepare as well as you possibly can, and you put yourself forward in the most authentic way. And then the results will be what they’re going to be. If it’s a yes, well, good for you. Keep working and stay out of trouble. And if it’s a no, somebody is gonna love you and you’re going to make the most of it.”

Tax Filing Tips for College Students
Here's what college students need to know about making the most of special tax benefits.
Getty Images
Typical college students are early in adulthood and face some tricky questions when filing taxes.
Key Takeaways
- College students who are single and earned more than $13,850 in 2023 must file an income tax return.
- Students who earned less can file a return to get a refund of taxes that were withheld by their employer.
- Parents who claim their student as a dependent may be able to take the American opportunity credit for college tuition.
- If your adjusted gross income was less than $79,000, you can file your taxes for free through the IRS’s FreeFile.
Here's what college students need to know about filing taxes and how to make the most of some special tax benefits.
Do College Students Need to File?
The answer depends on their income and whether they had employers withhold taxes from their paychecks.
Students who are single and earned more than the $13,850 standard deduction in tax year 2023 must file an income tax return. That $13,850 includes earned income (from a job) and unearned income (like investments).
They must also file a return if their unearned income (including interest and dividends, unemployment compensation and income as a beneficiary of a retirement plan) is greater than $1,250 or their self-employment income is more than $400, says Mark Steber, chief tax information officer for Jackson Hewitt Tax Service. For more insight, visit the IRS Tax Information for Students guide .
College students may still want to file a return even if it's not a requirement.
"If wages are less than $13,850, the student should still consider filing to receive refunds from federal and state withholding taxes," says Michael Trank, a CPA and personal financial specialist at Wertz and Company in Irvine, California.
In other words, if students had their employers withhold income taxes from their paychecks, they can file returns and get refunds.
Do Your Parents Claim You as a Dependent?
Whether your parents can claim you as a dependent is based on your age, student status and who's paying the bills.
"Generally, a parent can claim you as a dependent until age 19, but if you are a full-time student they can claim you as a dependent until age 24," says Brittany Benson, lead tax research analyst at The Tax Institute at H&R Block.
There are also other requirements, including how much financial support your parents are providing. A full-time college student is generally a dependent if they're younger than 24 and don't provide more than half their own support, among other rules, Benson says.
Part-time students who are 19 or older might not be dependents.
"If a child is going to school part time, is over 19 and they are working and making more than $4,700, they are not a dependent," Steber says.
For more information, see IRS Publication 501 Dependents, Standard Deduction and Filing Information.
Parents Might Be Eligible for the American Opportunity Credit
If your parents claim you as a dependent, they may be eligible to take the American opportunity credit during your first four years of postsecondary education. This helps cover eligible college costs like tuition, books and supplies.
The credit can be worth up to $2,500 for tax year 2023. To qualify, the student must be enrolled at least half time and pursuing a degree or other recognized educational credential, among other requirements.
Students whose parents aren’t able to claim them as dependents but who meet other requirements may be able to take the credit themselves, Steber says.
You or Your Parents May Be Able to Take the Lifetime Learning Credit
Students in graduate school or who aren’t attending college at least part time may be eligible for the lifetime learning credit, which is worth up to 20% of eligible expenses, with a maximum credit of $2,000 per return. If your parents claim you as a dependent, they may be able to take the credit.
To claim the full credit, your modified adjusted gross income must be $80,000 or less if you're filing as single or as head of household, or $160,000 or less if you're married filing jointly.
You can claim a partial credit if your MAGI is more than $80,000 but less than $90,000 if you're filing as single or as head of household, or more than $160,000 but less than $180,000 if you're married filing jointly .
For more information, visit IRS Publication 970 Tax Benefits for Education .
What Tax Forms Do You Need?
U.S. residents file federal income tax returns with Form 1040 , but you may need to include additional forms like Schedule C and Schedule SE if you have self-employment income .
You should receive W-2s from your full- or part-time employer(s) reporting your income and any taxes they withheld – or 1099s reporting income from freelance work or dividends, interest or capital gains from investment brokerage firms or banks.
You may also receive Form 1098-T showing the tuition you paid in 2023 and Form 1098-E reporting any student loan interest payments.
How to File Taxes for Free
If you're in college, money is likely tight. If you have a straightforward return, you can generally file your taxes for free.
Taxpayers with adjusted gross incomes of $79,000 or less can prepare and file their 2023 federal income taxes online for free through IRS Free File .
If you have a simple return, you may also be able to use other programs for free, such as some TurboTax and H&R Block versions.
If you want personal assistance, you may be able to get free tax help from the IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program, which might be available on campus or in your community.
The program aims to provide assistance to those who make less than $64,000 per year, people with disabilities and people with limited English-speaking skills. You can look up VITA sites in your area by using the IRS locator tool . For more information see the IRS’s Free Tax Return Preparation page.
You can also work with an in-person or online tax preparation service, such as H&R Block or Jackson Hewitt Tax Services.
Or you might consider consulting an independent tax preparer – either in person or virtually. You can check a tax preparer's credentials by using the IRS Directory of Federal Tax Return Preparers with Credentials and Select Qualifications .
Smart Tax Move for Working Students: Contribute to a Roth IRA
If you've earned any income from working, consider contributing to a Roth IRA .
If you're under 50, you can contribute up to $6,500 from income you earned during tax year 2023 – whether or not you file your own return.
You have until April 15, 2024, to contribute to a Roth IRA for tax year 2023. The contribution limits increase to $7,000 for 2024.
Roth contributions aren't tax deductible, but the money grows tax free and you can withdraw earnings tax free after you reach age 59 1/2.
Roth IRAs can give students a huge head start on their financial future. "It's never too early to start saving for retirement," Trank says.
Roth IRA Flexibility Benefits Students
Roth IRAs can be especially attractive to young investors because of their flexibility, says Rita Assaf, vice president of retirement products at Fidelity Investments.
"The most attractive feature about Roth IRAs, especially for younger investors, is the ability to withdraw money before retirement," she says.
You can also withdraw your contributions without penalties or taxes at any time and for any reason.
As long as five years have passed since your first Roth contribution, earnings from a Roth IRA can also be withdrawn federally tax free and penalty free, provided you use the money for specific reasons, such as qualified higher education expenses (which can include college-related expenses), qualified first home purchases (up to $10,000) and certain medical expenses, Assaf says.
“The rollover is subject to annual Roth contribution limits and an aggregate lifetime limit of $35,000. This is an attractive option for many, as it not only removes some of the barriers to saving for higher education, it allows for that education savings to now go toward a Roth IRA for the same beneficiary, giving them a head start for retirement,” she adds.

U.S. issues spring break travel warning
The U.S. Embassy and Consulates in Mexico has issued a spring break travel warning for Americans planning to visit the country. The message posted on Monday highlighted a range of potential safety threats in the popular destination, like crime.
“U.S. citizens should exercise increased caution in the downtown areas of popular spring break locations including Cancun, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum, especially after dark,” the advisory said, though it noted that crime can occur anywhere in Mexico. The U.S. State Department's travel advisory for the country notes various warning levels for different states, ranging from Level 1 (“exercise normal precautions") through 4 (“do not travel”).
The message also warned of other potential hazards like unregulated alcohol and pharmaceuticals. “Unregulated alcohol may be contaminated, and U.S. citizens have reported losing consciousness or becoming injured after consuming alcohol that was possibly tainted,” the advisory said.

The U.S. Embassy and Consulates noted that counterfeit medication is “common” and could be ineffective or an incorrect strength. Those products may also have dangerous ingredients.
The advisory warned of drowning and high private hospital prices, as well, among other risks. The message urged travelers to take precautions like keeping an eye on their drinks; staying with a group of friends in bars and clubs, while walking in dark areas or in taxis at night; and letting family and friends know about their travel plans.
Despite the warning, however, it noted that “the vast majority” of U.S. citizens visiting Mexico at spring break each year do so safely.

Joe Biden’s Superfans Think the Rest of America Has Lost Its Mind

Follow for live updates on Super Tuesday as voters in more than a dozen states head to the polls.
Andrea Russell is a fixture on Earp Street, the quiet strip of rowhouses in South Philadelphia where she has lived for 45 years. In the afternoons, neighbors come and go from her living room as her 16-year-old cat, George, sits perched above a television that is usually tuned to cable news.

Ms. Russell, a 77-year-old retired legal secretary, thinks President Biden would fit right in. “He’d come on by Earp Street,” she said. “I could picture going up to him and saying, ‘Hi, Joe.’ I can see him here.” She identifies with him, she said, and admires his integrity and his record. She also loves his eyes.
Her friend, Kathy Staller, also 77, said she was as eager to vote for Mr. Biden as she was for Barack Obama in 2008. “I am excited,” she said. “I hope more people feel the way I do.”
Ms. Russell and Ms. Staller are ardent, unreserved supporters of Mr. Biden — part of a small but dedicated group of Democratic voters who think that he is not merely the party’s only option against Donald J. Trump but, in fact, a great, transformative president who clearly deserves another four years in office.
They occupy a lonely position in American politics.
Mr. Biden, 81, has never inspired the kind of excitement that Mr. Obama did, and he is not a movement candidate , in contrast to his likely 2024 rival, Mr. Trump, who is 77. Historically, he has been far more skilled at connecting one to one on the campaign trail than energizing crowds with soaring oratory.
But his poll numbers have been especially rough lately. A New York Times/Siena College poll released this weekend found that just 43 percent of respondents would vote for him if the election were today, compared with 48 percent for Mr. Trump.
Forty-five percent of Democratic primary voters surveyed said they thought he should not be the party’s nominee — and just 23 percent of primary voters said they were enthusiastic about Mr. Biden being the Democratic nominee. That stands in contrast to the nearly half of Republican primary voters who said they were enthusiastic about Mr. Trump’s candidacy.
The Biden campaign dismissed the latest numbers over the weekend, pointing to strong Democratic performances in recent special elections and highlighting Republican divisions and cash problems .
Mr. Biden also has a slice of voters who adore him. They wave off concerns about his age and bristle at the suggestion that anyone else could meet the moment.
In interviews with nearly two dozen of these Democrats — many of them older, and most of them women — they sounded by turns beleaguered, bewildered and protective.
“I’m sorry Joe doesn’t know how much I love him, but I do love Joe,” said Constance Wynn, 73, of Wilkes-Barre, Pa. “I don’t even know why people want to pester the man, because the man has things to do.”
A president who could ‘use a little bit of bucking up’
Mr. Biden’s superfans say he deserves more credit for a substantive first-term record. Passing an infrastructure bill . Canceling some student loan debt . Protecting the environment with a sweeping climate measure . Capping the cost of insulin and other drugs. Supporting unions and abortion rights. Putting the first Black woman on the Supreme Court. Backing Ukraine and navigating international crises with his deep foreign policy experience.
They praise his personal qualities, describing his devotion to his family, his regular church attendance, his down-to-earth, workingman vibes . They say that they feel as if they know him, and that the swing voters in their lives might relate to him, too .
And sometimes they worry about him.
Susan D. Wagner, a founder of Markers For Democracy, which pushes get-out-the-vote efforts through the writing of postcards, has begun a project to send thank-you notes to Mr. Biden for his work — and to show him he has support at a challenging moment.
“It did seem like he was taking his lumps and could use a little bit of bucking up,” said Ms. Wagner, 66, who lives in Manhattan and is heavily involved in grass-roots activism. “I wrote that in this day and age, every once in a while somebody needs a smiling face. And I put a little smiling face on it.”
‘He came out of retirement to save the country’
The president does have a following among some younger Democrats — both on social media and among those involved with local politics.
Dakota Galban, 28, has a day job in human resources at a construction company, but he also serves as the chair of the Davidson Democrats, a county party organization based in Nashville.
He loves Mr. Biden. “And I feel like I’m the only one,” he said, arguing that the news media had overwhelmingly focused on Mr. Biden’s tepid support. “Does anybody care that I exist?”
Mr. Galban, like many of Mr. Biden’s fans, acknowledges that the president is not a candidate who generates a lot of enthusiasm. But they argue that’s a positive thing — Mr. Biden’s strength isn’t in his energy, they say, but his management skills and his understated ability to get things done.
“He came out of retirement to save the country, save our democracy, a fight for the soul of our nation — he didn’t have to run for president,” Mr. Galban said. “He made it his mission to take our country back from Donald Trump.”
But when Mr. Galban praises the president in committee meetings, his fellow Democrats chuckle. At home, his partner has gently suggested that he keep the life-size cutouts he has of Mr. Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris in storage.
It is a familiar dynamic to fans of the TV show “Parks and Recreation,” whose lead character, Leslie Knope — played by Amy Poehler — is obsessed with Mr. Biden , much to the confusion of her colleagues and loved ones. (Asked to describe her ideal man, Ms. Knope says, “He has the brains of George Clooney, and the body of Joe Biden.”)
Julie Platt, 34, works for a lobbying firm in Philadelphia and serves as a committee member in the city’s Second Ward. She describes herself as a progressive “ambassador” for Mr. Biden, saying her enthusiasm for him has only grown even as her friends who supported Bernie Sanders or Elizabeth Warren in the 2020 primaries see the president as insufficiently progressive, not exciting enough and too old.
“I don’t see it as a choice between two bad candidates,” she said, referring to a Biden-Trump rematch. “I couldn’t be more honored to vote for him.”
Two years ago, Ms. Platt started keeping a list of Mr. Biden’s accomplishments in the Notes app on her phone. “He’s done so much,” she said. “It’s driving me crazy that people don’t see it.”
‘Everybody I talk to loves Joe Biden’
Some of Mr. Biden’s biggest supporters, unsurprisingly, are in Philadelphia politics. He was born in Scranton, Pa., and Jill Biden is a Philadelphia sports fan. The president has visited the city frequently since taking office.
Jim Donnelly, the leader of the 58th Ward, in the city’s conservative-leaning northeast, said he had at least seven Biden signs on his front lawn. He has gotten into fights with his neighbors who have vandalized or stolen them.
Aside from cops, firefighters and his barber, he said, “Everybody I talk to loves Joe Biden.” Among his reasons for supporting Mr. Biden, he listed the president’s well-known friendliness to train conductors, his foreign policy experience and his record of job creation.
Some of Mr. Biden’s biggest supporters have loudly countered his detractors. After protesters calling for a cease-fire in Gaza interrupted Mr. Biden’s speech in January at a South Carolina church, one woman cried out: “You’re an understanding person. They don’t realize that. You’re a good man.”
That was Tomi Greene, 74, of Charleston. She said that she first met Mr. Biden at a town-hall meeting sometime around 2018, and that she had since become friends with Jill Biden.
“He is the right person to take us where we need to be,” Ms. Greene said. “He is very compassionate, and he’s smart. He relates to people.”
Of his detractors, she said, “I just wish they could see and feel what I feel.”
Ms. Russell, the Biden backer on Earp Street in Philadelphia, said there was only one thing she would change about Mr. Biden — the flip of white hair on the back of his neck, which sometimes sticks out over his suit collar.
“It drives me nuts,” she said. “Just trim it!”

Our Coverage of the 2024 Presidential Election
News and Analysis
The Supreme Court ruled that former President Donald Trump should remain on Colorado’s primary ballot , rejecting a challenge to his eligibility for another term that could have upended the presidential race by taking him off ballots around the nation.
This week, Trump is expected to rack up big wins on Super Tuesday and President Biden will deliver his State of the Union address on Thursday. The coming days are likely to set the tone and define the early contours of the presidential campaign .
Biden is struggling to overcome doubts about his leadership and concerns about his age , leaving him trailing behind Trump just as their general-election contest is about to begin, a new poll by The New York Times and Siena College has found.
Biden’s Superfans: Bewildered by tepid enthusiasm for Biden, who they see as a transformative president, these Democrats occupy a lonely place in U.S. politics .
The No-Panic White House: Even as a new Times/Siena poll showed many Democrats wish Biden were not running this fall, no one who matters to the president seems willing to suggest he step aside .
Trump’s Approach on Gaza: Since the start of the Israel-Hamas conflict, Trump has said surprisingly little about it — a reflection of the anti-interventionist shift he has brought about in Republican politics and his personal feelings about Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel.

Chanel brings Hollywood and seaside chic to Paris fashion week
Penélope Cruz and Brad Pitt star in a remake of a French classic as designer Virginie Viard turns the catwalk into a coastal boardwalk
The lights dimmed, and the Chanel show opened with Penélope Cruz and Brad Pitt on the catwalk. Cruz smouldered in a chic black polo neck and discreet diamonds, Pitt twinkly eyed in an open-necked white shirt. They gazed into each other’s eyes, flirted a little, and then – how could either of them resist? – embarked on a clandestine affair.
Well, almost. Cruz was, in fact, sitting demurely in the front row in a leather skirt suit, and Pitt was not in attendance. The rendezvous was on a short film, made for the show and screened above the catwalk, a remake of a seminal scene in Claude Lelouch’s Un Homme et Une Femme, a classic Gallic romance about a widow and widower falling in love that won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes festival in 1966. Lelouch, now 86, was also a guest of honour at Chanel’s show.
Five days before the Oscars is not a bad time for Chanel to remind the world of how it put movie star magnetism in pop culture. Classic 2.55 handbags make hearts beat faster everywhere. The double-C logo is as much an icon of French allure as the Eiffel Tower. It is a fantasy driven by hard-sell marketing – Pitt is famously reported to have said, of his $7m contract with Chanel No5, that “it’s the right moment and it’s a classic brand and I have six kids to put through college” – but a potent one nonetheless.
The original film was partly made on the windswept beaches of Deauville, the French seaside resort where Coco Chanel defined her sporty aesthetic, radical in its androgyny. The boutique she opened there in 1912 was her first to sell clothes as well as hats. On the boardwalk outside, women were still promenading in corseted parade dresses, but Chanel sold soft pyjama-style trousers and long cardigans belted to keep their silhouette on windy beach walks. Her blouses were styled on the wide-collared tunics of sailors, with a black ribbon bow added as a flourish while the jockey’s saddlecloths she saw at Deauville racecourse inspired the quilted seams of her handbags.
The same silhouettes walked this boardwalked catwalk, in clothes that channelled the off-duty seaside version of Chanel. Taking a trip to Deauville this Paris fashion week is a useful way for Chanel to draw eyes away from Coco’s Nazi collusion in occupied Paris, in the spotlight again while The New Look , a drama set in the fashion world of the 1940s, is on television screens. It is also in step with Virginie Viard’s vision of Chanel, which tends to be more relaxed and looser than Karl Lagerfeld’s highly strung fashion fantasies.

Subtract the picture hats and hat pins, and these were practical clothes for a 21st-century country mini break. Tweedy ankle length coats rustled over cosy suede boots, high-necked sweaters were layered under peacoats, wool caps pulled down against the wind. Sensible knitted dresses came jazzed up with a jumble of gold necklaces. There was even a puffer jacket, although this being Chanel, a white silk camellia fluttered at the lapel. Plus, of course, there were the real stars of this show: no fewer than 73 chain-strap quilted Chanel handbags.
