Imperial Highlights (10 Days) Tour

Imperial Highlights (10 Days)

Be warned, this is a REALLY LONG review. When we booked our trip, we based it on the rich history of the area and because many great musicians hailed from this area. However, when looking for reviews for this tour, to include optional events, we couldn’t find much other than a few lines summarizing that the trip was “great.” So, I kept a day by day log of events in case anyone was interested in this tour. We did all optional tours except the Gypsy night… we needed a break/rest night. We did the Trafalgar Cost Save (cheaper than the other tours) Imperial Europe tour roundtrip from Munich to Czech Republic, Hungary, Austria and back to Munich. FANTASTIC! Forgive any typos... I've read this too many times. Day 1 — Munich Arrived and easily met tour guide, Rob Early, at airport....he immediately began giving us history of the city as we went to the hotel and offered tourist ideas for the day in the event our rooms weren’t ready yet (mind you, it was the first 10:00am transfer bus from the airport). Great British accent and easy to listen to! Great weather...approx 70 degrees (May 2018). The Hotel: Holiday Inn Munich South…Rooms we’re ready (YAY) which was a pleasant surprise so we could offload bags. To beat jetlag, we walked to the train station around the corner and easily rode into town (Marienplatz square), walked around, grabbed food and enjoyed Munich. We met up later with tour group back at the hotel to get guided through the city. Our travel director, Rob, was excellent! He would say that we should remember this when visiting foreign countries, “it’s not better, it’s not worse, it’s just different”...great perspective, so true and the theme of the trip! Day 2 - Prague Great morning breakfast before leaving Munich! Bags out was an easy process (*tip* use packing cubes to make daily moving easy...keeps your suitcase organized). We were off to Prague, which was approx 6 hours with stops. On the way, we stopped at Regensburg...quaint town...good stop for an hour or so. (*Tip* you can easily get Czech Koruna (Crowns) at an ATM during the stop so no need to get before the trip. Exchange rate is approx $1 USD to 20 Koruna.) I can’t say it enough that our tour guide, Rob, is awesome...gives lots of history on drive to next city but also allows for rest/quiet time. He’s super funny, too. The Hotel: Hotel Alta Prague… For the optional tour Prague by Night tour, we had a local tour guide, Jan (“Yan”)...he was entertaining, knowledgeable, and funny! It included a walking tour through Prague, one free drink, entertainment (a super sweet accordion player) and a stroll to Charles Bridge. The drinks & tips are included in this optional tour but you can’t help but want to leave more (tips for the musician). Nice night full of history! The weather was approx 70 degrees. (*Tip* Bring travel lotion, shampoo, etc because the further you get away from Germany, the hotels won’t carry these things.) Day 3 — Prague Breakfast at the hotel in Prague is very euro...one of those “it’s not good or bad, but different” experiences. If you’re not super adventurous, you will at least find bread, meats, coffee, juice and fruit. The further away from Germany, the less “American” or café meal you get. Just different. The entire bus of 40 was feeling the drag today (jetlag) but it’s an “on-your-own” night so catching up on sleep is awesome! During the day, we visited castle which is president’s quarters. Rob, tour guide, was very patient because there were some folks who never listened and he had to repeat himself constantly. The optional event was a lunch cruise: goulash, smoked ham (so good...think amusement park turkey legs), salad (yes, greens!!), 3 drinks and dessert (pastry and ice cream) — great food and fantastic views. A must!! After eating, we strolled along the Vltava River and got to go up top on the boat to take great photos. Total time was approx 2 hours...definitely worth the option! After the tour, we had the option to head back to the hotel at 3pm or 5pm....several of the tour folks went to a local restaurant to hang out and fellowship together! The evening was an “on your own” which was nice for relaxing...found a hidden jewel 10 minutes (walking distance) from the hotel called SaSaZu...Asian fushion...a little pricey but so good!! Look it up on Yelp! (Note: the restaurant is located in a weird looking place that appears like an abandoned craft fair). Day 4 Budapest This is a long drive day so dress comfy for the bus ride...good time to rest and relax. (*Note* You rotate seats everyday so everyone gets opportunities for the views/sights.) (*Random Thought* We’re already thinking of another trafalgar trip to take and it’s only day 4! Love this!) We had a short stop at Bratislava...cute market area, good gelato at Arthur ice cream shop; only about 90 minutes to stop so grab lunch and keep moving! The Hotel: Mercure Budapest...lovely and in a more central part of town. There’s a grocery store behind the hotel for snacks and incidentals. FYI, some people didn’t have working air conditioning but ours worked fine (room 351 was a good one. ☺) We did the optional Danube Dinner Cruise...A MUST! So good! AMAZING Hungarian food (cabbage—which I’m usually not a fan of—and chicken...so good!!) and great views! All monuments are lit up and it just makes you feel grateful to be there! You go back and forth several times so you have lots of opportunities for photos. Day 5 - Budapest We were supposed to go to Parliament this morning, but there were demonstrations so we avoided those shenanigans and did a city tour with our local specialist instead. Everyone had a case of the sleepys right on this morning; luckily, we opted out of the evening event (Gypsy dinner) so we planned to rest! Nice stroll through Buda...(*Note* If on your tour, Parliament doesn’t happen this day, this swould be a morning to skip, relax and do your own thing.) We did the Optional Experience at St Andrews Square...saw a goulash demo and got some for lunch with bread, wine and dessert (plum strudel with cream)...dessert didn’t sound appealing because I’m not a fruity dessert (pies & pastries) person but it was so delicious! After lunch, we had time for walking and shopping. Lovely handmade crafts. Went to the Retro Tour...cost 5euro per person... not worth the cost but killed time and supported a family business. Skipped the evening optional tour, Gypsy Night (heard from the other guests who went that they enjoyed it and the food was good but we were okay with our decision. ☺) Side note, we went to the Gellert Hotel for the thermal bath on a recommendation of our local guide...ok place, extremely rude staff and not great smelling place. I don’t recommend this place. There are much better places to go… like the bathhouse that’s near Hero’s Square that you’ll see on your tour. You’ll have to take public transportation to get to these, if interested. Day 6 — Budapest & Vienna Went on the optional tour of the Parliament and Gundel House...the Parliament has beautiful architecture and decor...much like the Library of Congress in DC and the tour was quick (~1 hr). The Gundel was a quaint little restaurant and we ate “pancakes” aka crepes. They were just ok, nothing special at all. If I had to do it again, I’d skip this morning and just do Parliament on my own… though, you get to go through early as a tour group with a guide but it’s a gaggle so going on your own isn’t a bad thing. On the road to Vienna and stopped in Gyor for a lunch/bathroom break...good cafeteria in the area...make sure you have enough Forint or small euro change. The Hotel: Bellevue Hotel Vienna…very nice hotel, centrally located and the amenities are coming back up (they have lotion! ☺) Attended the Viennese concert...dinner was four courses and decent, not amazing. But, we came for the music since my hubby has a doctorate in conducting and studied all of the greats of this area of the world. Wonderful concert!! Some previous reviews said it wasn’t worth the cost and I 100% disagree (keep in mind it’s ~$120pp)! You get dinner, unlimited wine, champagne during intermission, a classical concert with approximately 15 songs, a few numbers with ballet dancers and opera singers and we sat in rows 3-5 with a great views. Day 7 — Vienna Took the optional tour at Schobrunn Palace and though it was a little earlier start (0740), it was worth it to get there early...beat the crowds and got a guided tour...beautiful place with interesting history. Had a morning city bus tour with our local guide; ended ~1200 and there was time to do things on your own. It was a decent tour but if could do over, we’d skip and have more time to explore this city on our own with more time. During our free time, we opted to go to Mozart Haus near St Stephen’s church (tried some food at one of the vendors in the area...spatzle & schnitzel)...also went to Haydn Haus. Did the optional dinner at Marchfelderhof... great food and very eclectic restaurant...think Cracker Barrel decor on steroids...pictures and knick knacks everywhere! The restrooms were even decorated. This was a unique little place and I’m glad we went but this is another evening you could skip to spend more time in the city. Vienna has a lot to do in the way of museums & churches so you have to narrow down what you want to do & plan to come back! Day 8 — Salzburg This was another bus day...stopped at the Landzit Restaurant where the Sound of Music was filmed in the area. Nice salad bar but super expensive so beware...a salad, drink & pretzel will cost you approximately $45 euro or $50+ in USD. We would’ve just grabbed a snack when we got to Salzburg if we would’ve known because we got the salad because we weren’t super hungry… not worth it! Arrived in Salzburg and immediately went on a walking tour since it was too early to check in. Got to spend time in the heart of Salzburg where there were shops, restaurants, etc. Went to Mozart’s Birthplace Museum...neat place. Early evening tonight with an included dinner at the hotel which was good...a rest evening ☺. The Hotel: Leonardo… and the amenities returned. Day 9 — Salzburg & Munich Last day! ☹ Early morning to get to the Eagle’s Nest...beautiful weather!! Blue skies and snow capped mountains. Absolutely gorgeous place! The weather was perfect and the views were amazing at the top. THAT IS A MUST OPTIONAL TOUR. On the way to Munich, got to stop at BMW World! Neat place! Had final dinner with some of the guests and had the opportunity to sit with a few we didn’t get to talk with during the week. It was a lovely dinner and what’s nice is everything had been taken care of in terms of payment, gratuity, etc. The same goes for hotels...everything is taken care of and that made for a lovely vacation! I cannot wait to do this again… and just hope it’ll be just as wonderful. If you get Rob Early, you’re in for a treat! Random Tips/Notes: -We brought lots of random over the counter medication just in case...didn’t need them but glad we had them because it’s hard to get or expensive at local grocery stores. -Pocket tissues are handy so bring them! -Packing cubes are a must since you’re moving constantly; hubby and I used one big suitcase and it was easy since trafalgar brings/takes bags to/from the rooms; you may want to do smaller carry on luggage if doing additional tours after this or if you have connecting flights that could result in lost luggage. -Have tip money set aside for the last day… $3 euro per person per day for the driver and $5 euro per person per day for the travel director. We waited until the last minute and had to search for an ATM. I’m usually better at planning than that! -Good to get Euros before going but there are ATMs around to get them early in the trip and likely less charges than the airport and bank. -Inform your bank of your foreign travels so they don’t flag you for potential fraud/stolen cards; no issues the whole time!

Highlights of Eastern Europe (Classic, End Vienna, 14 Days) Tour

Highlights of Eastern Europe (Classic, End Vienna, 14 Days)

Wonderful way to see Europe. Staying 2 nights in most places gave us time to explore on our own. We had a great Tour Leader and Driver who made the trip so special. My absolute highlight was the UNESCO listed Wieliczka Salt Mine. It was an amazing experience that I never tire of telling people about.

The Best of Eastern Europe Tour

This was a great tour made wonderful by our tour guide Zdenka. She knew these countries so well, she wanted us to see everything possible and she made it happen! Our bus driver, Gaspy, kept us safe and on time. Would recommend this tour, you learn so much and the countries visited were so beautiful and welcoming. This is the first time that Globus gave us a couple small, quirky new hotels that were not comfortable. Please Globus stick to regular hotels that have great staff. if the hotels are far from city center please give us transportation there and back on our afternoons off whenever possible.

What people love about Central Europe Tours for Seniors

booking a tour is easy.I went with Expat Explorere Eastern Highlights Christmas tour, and I was glad with the service and itineraries Expat Explorer had esp with the tour leader Mika ( Michaelena) and the driver Gabor. This is the 40th countries I visited ( not counting Vienna and Prague again?)The pleasantness and ease of condensed itineraries pack in only 11 days becomes easy because of these 2 partners. Always pleasantly nice, understanding and considerate of those like me who can hike and walk more than 5-6 miles but not with fast speed?. I had asthma and heart condition but I can do all those hiking and walking but not with a speed. I am never late, always follow the requirement of time in a meeting place. I would surely recommend Expat Tour with Mika as a lead tour guide.
Very good tour , something’s we didn’t find out right until the moment. But, overall good tour.
Saw so much in a short time! Ten countries in 15 days! Had a very busy schedule to accomplish all we did, but it was worth it. The activities were varied, with great optional excursions offered. This is my 5th tour with Expat Exlore ( through Tourradar) and it never faIls to amaze me how much value you get for your money.

9 of the Best Places to Retire in Europe

Thinking about moving abroad in your golden years? Consider these European destinations.

senior trip europe

More and more seniors have been opting for retirement abroad in recent years. In fact, the Social Security Administration reports that more than 700,000 Americans receive their monthly payments in foreign countries. Europe is an especially popular choice, and a number of factors explain why. Some retirees want to experience the culture of their ancestors. Others may have enjoyed vacations on the continent and want to spend more time there. Depending on the country or city, European destinations may have a low cost of living, a pleasant climate, or an overall high quality of life.

Each country has different rules on visas and residency qualifications, but in general, most require evidence of a minimum income level and private health coverage. Many have restrictions on retirees having jobs or owning property, while others make provisions for both. Americans living abroad must still file a federal tax return, though some countries have treaties that prevent double taxation on retirees' income. Keep in mind that Medicare does not pay for health care abroad, though some European countries allow legal residents to participate in their national health program.

With so many considerations, it's advisable to obtain professional advice on taxes and to research health care, visa and residency requirements, rental costs, infrastructure, and language. The U.S. State Department is an excellent resource for anyone considering retirement abroad.

If you're ready to make the leap, though, this list is here to help. We've looked into the latest policies and trends, and these are nine of the best places to retire in Europe.

Algarve, Portugal

Gorgeous white-sand beaches, warm Atlantic waters, ideal year-round weather, and an array of outdoor activities await retirees in this region on Portugal's southern coast . Historic towns like Silves boast beautiful Moorish architecture, while a bustling local airport and the relative proximity of Lisbon make the region easy to access. Considered one of the best places in the world to retire, the Algarve offers an extraordinary selection of golf courses, a healthy lifestyle, Mediterranean diet, and low cost of living. Best of all for monolingual seniors, English is widely spoken.

Legal residents are able to register with the National Health Service to get pay-as-you-go access to public hospitals and health centers, though it's worth noting that obtaining private health insurance is required as a condition of receiving a residence permit. (Other requirements include a passport and proof of income.) These permits are mandatory for retirees wanting to stay longer than three months, though once a permit is issued, it remains valid for five years. Residents can also apply for a permanent permit when the initial one expires. If you want to simply make a long visit rather than moving to the country, that's doable too: no visa is needed for stays of fewer than 90 days within a six-month period.

Income is generally taxed, but Portugal offers 10 years with no tax on retirement pensions under certain qualifications of its Non-Habitual Resident (NHR) program.

Bordeaux, France

A lovely riverfront city in southwestern France, Bordeaux enjoys warm summers and mild winters. Conveniently situated a short drive from the Atlantic Ocean and close to a multitude of renowned wineries , the city has much to offer visitors and residents alike. Museums, galleries, concert halls, public parks, restaurants, cafes, outdoor markets, and lively nightlife are all plentiful. Getting here (and traveling once you've settled in) is also easy, thanks to a modern system of high-speed trains that connect Bordeaux to various cities in France and across Europe.

France's health care system has been recognized as one of the best in the world, and, fortunately for would-be residents, it's accessible even to noncitizens under certain conditions. If you live in the country for three consecutive months and stay for a minimum of 183 days per year, you're eligible to apply for public health care.

A long-stay visa is required to remain in France for more than 90 days, and this must be obtained while still in the United States. To apply, you'll need to provide your local French consulate with a passport, extra photos, and proof of financial self-sufficiency and confirmed housing, among other documents.

Budapest, Hungary

Alisha McDarris/Travel + Leisure

With beautiful historic buildings, excellent restaurants, thermal baths, and friendly citizens, Budapest is becoming a popular retirement destination for both Europeans and Americans. The city developed a reputation in the early 2000s for affordability, and, though prices have risen since, the cost of living is still appealingly low — think $1,000-a-month rent and high-end dinners for $50.

Hungary is a member of the European Union, making continental travel a breeze (though remember that the country uses its own currency, the forint). A rich culture, vibrant nightlife, and a location on the Danube have attracted a large international community, which means English speakers are easy to find.

Foreigners are permitted to buy property in Budapest, and the health care system is generally regarded as good. Foreign retirees can become eligible for permanent residency after just three years of living continuously in Hungary, as long as they meet certain criteria like having a stable home in the country.

Ljubljana, Slovenia

This capital city of about 295,000 is an emerging favorite among retirement-age expats. A former Yugoslav republic, Slovenia has been independent since 1991 and a European Union member since 2004, and it boasts a rich culture and diverse natural environment. A wide range of attractions can be found within a few hours' drive of Ljubljana, from Adriatic beaches and Alpine ski resorts to the Italian city of Venice. Slovenia has a long history of winemaking and several UNESCO World Heritage sites, one of which is located in the center of Ljubljana. The capital also offers a charming mix of old and new architecture and a walkable urban core that's on par with many better-known European cities — but without the throngs of tourists.

No visa is required here for stays of up to 90 days. If you wish to stay longer than that, you'll begin by applying for a temporary residence permit. People with Slovene heritage can expedite the permit process, so fire up the ancestry test if you're interested in relocating. Health care is considered adequate, and many people purchase private health insurance if they are not eligible for the public program. Income is taxable on residents, but double taxation can be avoided with proper IRS filing.

Split, Croatia

Growing in popularity as a tourist destination, Croatia is also quite attractive as a retirement location. Not only does the country have approximately 3,600 miles of coastline, but warm, dry summers and mild winters create a desirable climate. The country's second-largest city, Split, offers easy access to some of the best beaches in Croatia . The Roman emperor Diocletian built his palace here, and its remains have been designated a UNESCO World Heritage site. Restaurants, bars, cultural and entertainment venues, and many English-speaking residents make it relatively easy to adapt.

U.S. citizens who intend to stay longer than 90 days must apply for a temporary residence permit , and once you've lived in Croatia for five years, you become eligible for permanent residency. U.S. citizens are also permitted to purchase real estate in Croatia. Health care is considered adequate, and English-speaking doctors are available.

Alicante, Spain

Rory Fuller/Travel + Leisure

Located on Spain's southeastern coast, Alicante offers exquisite beaches, dynamic nightlife, and historic attractions. The climate is the most famous draw here — the warm, waterfront city has been called the sunniest in Europe — but the culinary scene is equally impressive. Reasonably priced dining options range from casual to elegant, with fresh seafood and the artisan stalls of the Alicante Central Market being particular highlights.

With a population of just over 330,000, Alicante has all the amenities of a major city, yet it maintains a reputation for being cozy and friendly. It's well connected to destinations across Spain thanks to an excellent rail system, and the bustling Alicante-Elche Airport also helps make travel a breeze.

High-end housing can certainly be found here given Alicante's longtime popularity with foreign nationals, but it's also possible to rent modest homes for under $1,000 per month or to purchase them for as little as $100,000. Health care also tends to be affordable, and, as is the case throughout Spain, it's regarded as being of exceptional quality, with state-of-the-art equipment and highly trained doctors. Non-Europeans looking to retire in Spain should contact their local Spanish embassy to apply for a long-stay retirement visa, which must be renewed annually. After five years, you can apply for permanent residency.

Valletta, Malta

Valletta is the tiny capital city of Malta, a country composed of three islands in the Mediterranean Sea about 60 miles south of Sicily. Though the city has a population of around 6,000, this UNESCO World Heritage site punches above its weight in terms of history and culture. Appealing features include a picturesque coastal location on a peninsula between two sheltered harbors and architecture that dates back as far as the 16th century. Serviceable public transit and strong walkability add to the ease of living here.

The main language besides Maltese is English, and the country has a large population of expats from the U.K., Australia, and the U.S. Affordability is another draw: one-bedroom apartments in the capital region can rent for as low as $750 a month, and groceries and restaurant dining are also reasonably priced.

Private health care in Malta is recommended for non-EU expatriates, and is both highly rated and inexpensive compared to U.S. options. Malta and the U.S. have a treaty in place for relief from double taxation on income. Plus, residency can be established in several ways, making relocation to Malta accessible for retirees.

Kinsale, Ireland

Tessa Desjardins/Travel + Leisure

Situated on the southern coast of the Republic of Ireland , Kinsale is a historic town known for its colorful architecture and thriving maritime culture. For retirees who enjoy the outdoors, this could be an ideal spot. The waterfront offers beaches, fishing, and boating opportunities, while cycling, hiking, and horseback riding are all available on shore. One of the country's most beautiful golf courses, Old Head, is nearby, and even for non-golfers, it's the perfect place for a walk among sea breezes and stunning views.

English is spoken, of course, and foodies will appreciate the abundance of restaurants and fresh seafood. The weather is mild, and the proximity of the city of Cork (30 minutes to the north) makes rail travel and international flights easy to access. Living costs are comparable to those in the United States, though housing prices have been increasing across Ireland in recent years.

In order to stay beyond three months, visa applicants must prove adequate income (around $54,000 annually) and substantial savings. Temporary residence visas can be renewed annually for five years, at which point the duration is extended to five years per visa. Private health coverage is advised, and health care is considered good.

Prague, Czech Republic

This unique and captivating city is particularly welcoming to foreigners — it's home to more than 200,000 expatriates and a growing number of retirees. Nicknamed the City of a Hundred Spires, Prague was mostly spared in World War II, as evidenced by its colorful Baroque and Gothic architecture. The entire Old Town has been named a World Heritage site, yet the Czech Republic's capital is a modern city with high standards of living, world-class art and museums, diverse cuisine, and a range of historic pubs and inventive breweries.

Affordable rents can be found just outside the city center, including in many impressively modern apartments. Centrally located in Europe, Prague is a great base from which to explore all of the continent. Plus, its health care system is among Europe's best. Health insurance is mandatory yet comes at a reasonable cost, and there are plenty of high-quality, well-trained doctors, many of whom speak English. U.S. citizens or other non-EU residents wishing to retire in Prague must obtain a long-term visa , beginning with an application at their most convenient Czech consulate. Permanent residency can be applied for after living legally in the Czech Republic for five years.

"Kensington Tours is a vendor with nasty, pushy old school sales tactics and sketchy opaque pricing to get you fleeced in my opinion, read on ! Kensington Tours pre-charged my Amex Centurian card a staggering $85,985.00. for 6 nights without international airfares in one cost-opaque invoice. This consisted of a simple assembly of 9 hotel room nights in 3 locations, 6 in-country economy flights, 3 airport pickup/drop offs, a 2 day 'tour' and a 1-day expedition on a small boat. It was so bad we declined the 2nd tour day and boat trip. The full retail cost of the trip, which would include profits to Kensington Tours, is estimated at $30,140.47 versus their invoice of $ 85,985.00. That is a staggering overcharge of $54,859.43. see details below. The experience should have been amazing for this amount of money, but the cost was so egregious for the average to low quality of the tours, flights, boat, and cheap or kerb-side restaurants and food establishments I decided to assemble the full retail price for these activities by speaking directly with all the major vendors. These are mostly time-specific cost comparisons on the days we were there. Both hotel general managers informed me the costs were about the same as on the previous days for the day extensions they quoted. i.e. peak season pricing. The full retail costs I've assembled would include any tour outfits profits on the hotel, airfare and lunch as they buy wholesale. It should be a close season-specific estimate. This was verified by a call from Kensington Tours Director of Asia sales who confirmed she couldn't reveal room prices because they have contracts with the hotels for discounts over retail. Kensington Tours provided near zero value, I also didn't get the typical additional hotel $ benefits, comped amenities and prestige of direct Centurion bookings, instead the reservations showed as a lowly Kensington Tours operator booking. Kensington Tours unilaterally declares their sales brochure is a de facto contract agreement without either attaching the contract doc to my knowledge or getting a counter signature, i.e. it's not a contract and would never hold up. They attempt to hide behind 'private discount contracts' with hotels and insinuated to me costs were 3x reality The comped me back $30,000.00 because I have some leverage, it should have been $55,000.00. I'm still considering whether to file a quick suit, they'll eat at least the balance defending against me in attorney fees. I'll see if I can be bothered to do that. I probably will, to let others know to be careful and not use an outfit like this. Hopefully save folks their hard earned money. My bottom line, Kensington Tours is a disgrace run the other way. "Our family of four, including two adult children, took the Bicycling: Day Trips to Paradise in Canada. This trip is entirely outsourced to the owners of the inn, there are no Road Scholar employees involved in the trip. Two of us have taken bicycle trips all over the world and the bicycling component of this trip was disorganized, haphazard and almost unsafe. We all filled out forms giving details regarding our bicycle fitting months before the trip. On the first day, the leader Stephen, went around the room and asked the same questions and said everyone would get fitted in the morning before we began the first ride. The morning brought a rack of bikes, all different types in various levels of readiness. There were road bikes, hybrid bikes, mountain bikes and e-bikes. The rides were all on paved surfaces and the mountain bikes were heavy and the additional suspension added weight. The bike I received had rust on the chain and rear sprocket. When I asked about it, was told they were waiting for another van to show up with tools and equipment. Once it arrived, they gave me the lubricant to spray on the rust. My wife’s bike would not shift into the high gear on the front sprocket. Instead of adjusting the derailleur, they suggested spraying it with lubricant. Our one son is over six feet and needed a larger frame bike, even though he detailed it in the bike form months ago, there was no bike to fit him. One of the guides, then went home and brought a larger bike that was a full suspension mountain bike for him. The bike was very heavy, hard to control on the road and he felt unsafe. After two days, one of the guides convinced Stephen that they could adjust a hybrid bike to fit him. Clearly there was no work done to prepare the bikes for the trip. Many of the bikes needed adjusting and all needed lubricant to function easily. For every day, there was a tray of snacks placed out for us to take along the ride. None of the bikes had any baskets or attached bags, so if you didn’t bring a small day pack, there was no way to carry the snacks. For lunch on the rides, they brought exactly one sandwich for each rider. Since most of us get hungry while doing a day of exercise, it would have been helpful to have a few extras. On one day, they ran out of sandwiches and one of the leaders that were riding with us did not get lunch. Do NOT take this trip if you are expecting it to be a bicycling trip. We have used VBT and Discovery Bicycle Tours many times over the past 25 years and they are excellent bike tour companies. Lastly, after sharing these details with Road Scholar after the trip, their response was weak at best. After doing the full reviews and having to call them, their response was to give us $200 credit after spending $8000 on this trip. Not only was that insulting, they assumed that I would take another trip with their organization."

  • River cruises are an appealing way to tour Europe in a relaxed mode that offers sightseeing in both atmospheric villages and big cities.

  • While you can see something of Europe in a week, allowing at least ten days to two weeks for one to three countries is more satisfying.
  • When booking your tour, since many Europeans now speak English, don’t be too concerned with language barriers. Your guides should also be able to translate when necessary.

Safety and Travel Advice for Senior Travelers in Europe

Whether embarking on a luxury European vacation or opting for an affordable tour, safety and preparedness are paramount for seniors planning their dream European tour. Below are some practical safety tips and travel advice to ensure a memorable, safe, and comfortable journey.

Opt for Travel Insurance

One of the primary safety nets during European tours for seniors is travel insurance. It safeguards against unexpected health issues, accidents, or travel disruptions. Senior travel insurance for Europe often covers emergency medical expenses, evacuation, trip cancellation, and lost or stolen baggage.

Prioritize Health and Well-being

When on a European vacation, seniors should remember to pace themselves. Europe offers a myriad of attractions, but it’s important not to overextend oneself. Hydrate regularly, take rest breaks, and maintain a balanced diet to stay healthy on the road. Carry necessary medications, and be aware of the location of nearby healthcare facilities in your destinations.

Essential Packing Advice

Packing essentials for European tours for seniors should include comfortable walking shoes, weather-appropriate clothing, necessary medications, travel documents, and essential toiletries. Travelers with mobility aids should ensure they are suitable for the varied terrains they might encounter in Europe.

Beware of Tourist Scams

Tourist scams can happen anywhere, and Europe is no exception. Be cautious of “too good to be true” deals, and avoid disclosing personal or financial information to strangers. Traveling with a reputable tour company offering guided tours for seniors can provide a layer of security against such scams.

Advice for Dietary Restrictions and Mobility Aids

Europe is increasingly catering to travelers with dietary restrictions. Senior-friendly European trips now often include options for meals catering to dietary needs. Inform your tour operator in advance about any dietary restrictions to ensure a seamless dining experience.

For those traveling with mobility aids, most European cities offer accessible travel options. However, some older historical sites may present challenges. It’s worth researching ahead or opting for an accessible European holiday for seniors that caters to travelers with mobility concerns.

Safety First

When it comes to safe travel in Europe for seniors, general safety rules apply. Keep belongings secure, stay in well-traveled areas, especially after dark, and maintain regular contact with loved ones back home.

Here’s a quick checklist for a safe and comfortable journey:

When to Visit Europe: Best Time for Seniors

Deciding when to embark on European tours for seniors involves several factors, including climate, crowd sizes, and price variations. By selecting an optimal time for your tour, you can enjoy a rewarding, comfortable, and affordable Europe travel experience.

Spring and Fall: Mild Climate and Lower Crowds

The spring (April to June) and fall (September and October) seasons are often the best times for seniors to visit Europe. The weather during these periods is generally mild and pleasant, making it perfect for exploring historical sites or taking European river cruises.

During these off-peak seasons, tourist crowds are smaller, which offers a more relaxed environment and shorter waiting times at attractions. Additionally, these periods often feature cheaper flight and accommodation rates, making it a budget-friendly time for seniors.

Winter: Magical Atmosphere and Christmas Markets

Winter (November to March) in Europe offers an entirely different experience. Despite the colder climate, this can be an exciting time for seniors who enjoy festive atmospheres and are willing to brave lower temperatures. Many European cities host famous Christmas markets, making winter a special time for European tours for seniors.

It’s worth mentioning that winter travel typically requires a bit more planning in terms of packing and staying warm, but the twinkling lights and festive spirit can make this season worth the extra effort.

Summer: Peak Season with Warm Climate

Summer (July to August) is peak season in Europe, with warm weather and long days. However, it’s also the busiest time, and tourist sites can be crowded. For those who don’t mind larger crowds and a bustling atmosphere, the summer offers plenty of daylight hours for exploration and activities.

Enjoy Seasonal Attractions

The changing seasons in Europe bring unique attractions. Spring is renowned for beautiful flower blooms, such as the tulip fields in the Netherlands. Fall offers stunning foliage, especially in places like the Scottish Highlands.

Moreover, each season offers a unique culinary experience. Summer is excellent for trying a variety of street foods and al fresco dining, while winter provides an opportunity to enjoy hearty European comfort foods.

Here’s a quick reference guide for best times to visit:

While these general guidelines can help seniors in deciding the best time to visit Europe, personal preferences regarding weather, crowd sizes, and seasonal attractions should also be considered. Your dream European tour awaits, whether you’re a fan of spring blooms, autumn leaves, summer sunlight, or winter snowflakes!

Making the Most of Your European Adventure as a Senior

One of the joys of senior travel in Europe is the opportunity to embrace new experiences. Europe’s rich cultural heritage and varied landscapes offer a wealth of opportunities, from exploring historical sites to savoring unique culinary experiences. Whether you’re cruising down the Danube River, touring the Colosseum in Rome, or enjoying a wine tasting in the vineyards of France, every moment on European tours for seniors can become a treasured memory.

Immerse in Each Destination

In the hustle of travel, it can be tempting to rush from one destination to the next. However, one of the best European travel tips for seniors is to slow down and truly immerse yourself in each place you visit. Take the time to stroll leisurely through historic streets, relish local cuisines, or just sit and observe life around you in a public square. Slowing down also has practical benefits. It allows for rest periods between activities, ensuring that seniors maintain energy throughout their trip.

Connect with Locals and Fellow Travelers

Connecting with people is one of the most enriching aspects of travel. On your European vacation for seniors, make the most of opportunities to engage with locals and fellow travelers. Group travel for seniors in Europe can provide ample chances to interact with people from diverse backgrounds, forming bonds that can last a lifetime.

Exchanging stories with fellow senior travelers can add a layer of camaraderie and shared experience to your journey. Interacting with locals can also offer deeper insights into their culture, traditions, and daily life. Try a language exchange or attend a local event to engage with the community. These experiences can transform a typical sightseeing tour into a personal and memorable adventure.

Whether you’re looking for luxury vacations or budget-friendly European tours for seniors, there are options to suit every preference and budget. All-inclusive European tours for seniors take care of accommodation, meals, and itinerary, ensuring a stress-free travel experience. Alternatively, for the more independent seniors, you can choose your own path with self-guided tours or plan your itinerary around specific interests such as culinary tours or historical tours.

A well-planned European tour can open doors to unforgettable encounters, immersive experiences, and personal enrichment. European tours for seniors are more than just a vacation – they’re an opportunity to explore new territories, indulge in new experiences, and make the most of your European adventure. Safe travels!

Travel is a joyful pursuit, and seniors should embrace it fully. Embarking on European tours for seniors, there is no better way to enliven the golden years than by exploring new horizons. Seniors have the advantage of time, wisdom, and often, the flexibility to travel during off-peak seasons. These perks can translate into more meaningful and relaxed travel experiences.

The adage ‘fail to plan, plan to fail’ rings especially true for senior travel in Europe. While spontaneity can add a fun element, solid planning helps ensure smooth, enjoyable travel experiences. From choosing the best European countries for senior travel to identifying senior-friendly European holiday packages, planning is key.

Picking senior-friendly tours tailored to your interests and pace is another important aspect. Be it historical tours, culinary tours, river cruises, or group travel for seniors in Europe, there’s something for everyone. Adventure need not be adrenaline-fueled; it can be as simple as trying a new cuisine or visiting a historic site.

While Europe is generally safe for travel, safety tips for seniors are crucial to ensure a secure journey. Proper travel insurance for seniors offers peace of mind, covering unforeseen circumstances that may occur during the trip. Additionally, consider using services specializing in senior travel, as they are often equipped to handle unique needs and potential emergencies.

Choosing senior-friendly accommodations and transport ensures comfort during your travels. Whether you opt for luxury European vacations or more affordable European tours for seniors, comfort and safety should never be compromised.

Embrace the Adventure

European tours for seniors provide a unique opportunity to embrace new experiences, learn about different cultures, and create lasting memories. Whether it’s marveling at the architectural wonders in Rome, cruising down the beautiful Rhine, or enjoying a traditional Spanish paella, every experience enriches your journey.

Remember, age is not a barrier to travel. It’s a chance to explore the world with a perspective only wisdom and experience can provide. So pack your bags, open your mind to new adventures, and embark on that European journey you’ve always dreamed of. After all, the world is your oyster, no matter your age!

Do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip as a senior.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises). However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

Learn more about Intrepid's COVID-19 policy

Who are Intrepid travelers?

Intrepid adventures are for travelers with a yearning to get off the beaten track. Whether you're traveling solo, with a group of friends, or are aged 18 or 70, there is an Intrepid adventure to suit your interests and comfort level. Each Intrepid adventure has a physical and cultural grading to help you decide if the trip is right for you. No special skills are required for most adventures, just a sense of adventure and a curiosity about the world. Even on our camping adventures no previous experience is required; our tents are easy to set up, even for first-time campers.

Are there age restrictions on your trips?

For the majority of our trips the minimum age is 15. An adult must accompany all children under the age of 18. Our Overland Adventures have a minimum age of 18. Younger children can join us on our Family trips and Short Break Adventures, but check each trip for its minimum age, which is located on the trip’s overview page on the website. Most of our trips don’t have a maximum age limit, but a Self-Assessment Form is required for all passengers 70 years and over.

How many people will be on my trip?

Good things come in small packages, which is why we keep our group sizes down. This means we’re small enough to remain flexible as we thread our way through communities without intimidating the locals. On most of our trips you’ll be part of an intimate group of 12-16 people, though our group sizes are on average 10 people. Our Overland trips are in purpose-built vehicles that can carry up to 24 travelers. Group sizes are displayed on each trip’s overview page on our website.

I’m traveling alone – is that OK?

This is the beauty of the Intrepid style of travel: many of our travelers join because they are traveling solo and want to meet and share experiences with like-minded people.

Learn more about solo travel

I have a disability – can I join an Intrepid trip?

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. We ask that you carefully consider whether you are physically and mentally able to complete the itinerary you have chosen, recognizing that on many trips you will be required to carry your own bags and use public transport.

Where we can we will make reasonable adjustments to the operation of our trips to facilitate the requirements of disabled travelers – such as booking ground floor accommodation, or having our leaders communicate important directions in writing as well as verbally. Many travelers with disabilities have been able to enjoy our trips by traveling with a friend or companion who can assist with specific needs. If joining a group trip is not practical we may be able to provide you with a private departure. Please contact our sales team for further information on any of our itineraries.

Learn more about accessible travel with Intrepid

Do I need to buy travel insurance?

Travel insurance is compulsory on all our trips if you’re traveling internationally. Minimum coverage may differ from trip to trip, so make sure you check the Travel Insurance section in your Essential Trip Information. You will not be permitted to join the group until your leader has sighted your insurance policy number and the insurance company's 24-hour emergency contact number – it’s really important there are no barriers to getting emergency assistance for you.

Will I have my own room?

It's your call. Rooming on our trips is organized on a twin-share basis, but most of our trips also have the option to pay an extra fee for your own room. Just let us know at the time of booking and we'll arrange it for you.

For twin-share rooms, we pair up solo travelers with another traveler of the same gender as per the gender marker on each of their passports. As a responsible tour operator, we strive to create a safe and inclusive environment for everyone. In the case that your gender identity differs from what's indicated on your passport, please contact us so that we can discuss rooming options with you.

On a small selection of itineraries some accommodations are booked on an open-gender, multi-share basis. In those instances it will clearly be stated in your Essential Trip Information.

How does group time work?

Whether you’re traveling alone or with a partner, our trips have a set itinerary. But within that there’s time set aside for your own exploration (if you want to – no pressure). Depending on how you're feeling, you may want to have some downtime, ask your guide for a few tips then head out alone, or hang out with the group and see where the day takes you.

What makes a small group tour better than a coach tour?

The main difference between a small group tour and a coach tour is the size of the group; our tours have 10 travelers each (on average) while coaches can hold up to 60 people. This means that you'll never have to vie for your leader's attention on a small group tour because you'll automatically have it.

You really should ask the questions on the Moscow forum, since the answers require local knowledge and are not very specific to solo travelers. Most probably many of them are already answered as Top Questions or in existing threads. You just need to make the effort to read the existing answers.

The airport website http://www.domodedovo.ru/en/ tells that there is a rail connection. You probably prefer to use that instead of dealing with taxi drivers as a solo female. Downtown you can use the Moscow underground network.

Certainly check out the destination forum. You may find all you need in the Top Questions or previous posts if you do a search of the forum.

A frequent and knowledgeable poster on here is Cora. You can find her post here. You could try messaging her direct tho she could be along shortly

Hi thebanshee,

I may be biased because I visit Moscow regularly as a solo female traveller, in business as well as for pleasure, and have no language or mentality barrier to consider, but I find Moscow no different in terms of safety from any other large city - London, NYC or Hong Kong.

In other words, you certainly do need to keep your wits about you, mind your environment and stick to the usual common sense rules. But there’s really nothing special to be worried about.

Get ready to a large bustling populous (crowded) city with richest history and developing nowadays, with lots to see and do to keep you busy for more than three nights. Better plan ahead what you want to see and decide on how to get there. For example, study Moscow metro map to avoid wasting time in infamous Moscow traffic jams.

I agree with the others that for practicalities like hotels and airport transfer Moscow forum is the best place to refer to http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowForum-g298484-i718-Moscow_Central_Russia.html

Enjoy your trip! :)

P.S. Thanks Sue ;)

It's a few years ago but I stayed in the Best Western Vega hotel, it was reasonably cheap and convenient for the metro. I travel solo but on this occasion I was with friends and I found the metro very confusing so needs plenty of research before you set off. I don't know your interests but if you like art, the Tretyakov Gallery is a must see and just outside the entrance is a very nice bar with English speaking staff.

On the outskirts of Moscow is the Koloenskoye estate, just a train ride away, which is beautiful and well worth a visit.

I was warned about the terrible food, the metro, and how dangerous Moscow was but I loved every minute. As others have said, you have to be aware of your surroundings and do plenty of research but it's a wonderful city. Have a great time.
