Romance, gastronomy, history and the City of Lights

Beautiful châteaux, rolling vineyards and prestigious vintages, the glamorous Côte d’Azur, elegant cities and medieval towns. Much of France’s beauty lies in its diversity, and its lure is hard to resist.

Known for its exceptional cuisine, bubbling champagne, diverse terrain and distinctive culture, it is little wonder France is among the most visited tourist destinations in the world. Whether it’s the iconic landmarks and chic style of Paris that has you captivated, the lavender fields of Provence , the medieval history of Reims, the fertile vineyards of Burgundy , Bordeaux and Champagne or the glitz and sun of the star-studded Saint-Tropez , you’ll find a drastically changing landscape and culture wherever you go.

Industrialisation was late to arrive in France and there is a strong sense among its people that it remains a rural country. And while there are many developed cities, the large spaces of countryside and woodland are widespread and vastly unchanged. As well as being celebrated for its gastronomy, producing more than 250 cheeses and some of the world’s most-loved wines, France is also recognised for some of Europe’s most influential artists from Renoir and Monet to Cezanne, Gauguin, Matisse and Braque.

Your trip, whether it’s a romantic France honeymoon or a family adventure , can include as much or as little as you like. We’ll help you explore this welcoming and varied country, perfect for newlyweds seeking a blend of romance and discovery. Assisted by our enthusiastic local guides, we’ll plan every step of your journey, from charming châteaux to the sun-soaked Côte d’Azur, ensuring you can immerse yourself in the tremendous adventure of France while we take care of all the details.

Browse the example plans below for ideas or take a look at our locations page for inspiration, and then speak to our France Travel Designers to start planning your own tailor-made trip.

When to visit

France is one of Europe’s most popular destinations, and spring, summer and autumn are the best times to visit. You’ll find some restaurants close during August so it’s best to avoid this month if you’re after a foodie -themed trip. There are some lovely markets around Christmas time and plenty of galleries and museums to explore if you’re visiting during the cooler months.

luxury travel to france

With iconic landmarks and a preeminent history of cuisine and viticulture, luxury France travel with Ker & Downey proves both romantic and luxurious.

Historical Vacation in France

Luxury France travel offers something of interest for every taste and interest. Indeed, history in the region stretches back to the Roman era. Plus, a visit to monuments and museums throughout the country reveal architectural marvels and archaeological spoils from around the globe. From the iconic Notre Dame in Paris to the Romanesque architecture of Normandy, every building tells a story. Opulent Versailles contrasts with the ultra modern contemporary arts museum at Centre Pompidou. This demonstrates France’s long-time love affair with design.

French Style & Art

Of course,  Paris  is also synonymous with fashion. The cornerstone of luxury France travel is none other than Paris Fashion Week. Here some of the world’s most respected fashion houses take to the runways. Paris is also teeming with art. The Louvre showcases a trove of masterpieces, and Ker & Downey can  plan a special treasure hunt through its corridors on your next vacation in France. Meanwhile, the streets house painters, print shops, and flea markets where you can hunt for true hidden gems.

France for Foodies

Foodies flock to France for classic cuisine and wines, both old world and modern. Indeed, the cities and countryside alike offer up a bounty of delectable delights on any vacation in France. The sights and sounds of Paris are steeped in culinary tradition. Listen to the clink of wine glasses on balconies overlooking the River Seine, the rush of waiters in the bustling cafes of the Latin Quarter, baguettes on the back of bicycles, and the hearty home cooking of the fishing villages and winelands. On a vacation in France, you will find people who are known for their deep respect for their food, who treat each meal as an occasion and each confection as a treasure.

France in Depth

(19 Days - Departs Daily on a Private Basis ) Normandy, Paris & Versailles, Champagne, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Provence, Cote d’Azur

This private, luxurious in-depth tour of France includes some of the country’s most interesting destinations. Enjoy comprehensive private touring with your own guides, and stay at exclusive luxury hotels in each location.

Begin in  Normandy  and stay at a luxury chateau hotel. During private touring with an expert Normandy guide, tour the  D-Day landing beaches  and other significant World War II-related sites such as the Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial, the Mulberry Artificial Harbors, and the Caen Museum of Peace. Also, visit the historic town of  Bayeux  to see the famous tapestry illustrating the Norman invasion of England in 1066.

One day, enjoy a private excursion to  Mont Saint-Michel , a remarkable UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of France’s true wonders. This enormous abbey and town on a tidal island has been a pilgrimage site since ancient times, and it remains one of Europe's most popular attractions.

Transfer by private car to Paris, stopping en route for a private tour of  Giverny  and the house, museum, gardens and lily ponds where Claude Monet lived and painted in his final years.

With your own private guide and driver—sophisticated experts who will share the very best of Paris with you—explore  Paris  according to your interests. Tour the city's most interesting neighborhoods, markets, boutiques, specialty food shops, gardens, museums and other cultural attractions. A few of our favorites: Walk among centuries-old mansions on exclusive Ile Saint-Louis. See the stained glass windows of exquisite Sainte-Chapelle, and see iconic Notre Dame. Visit the backstreets of Montmartre. Climb the steps to the Sacre Coeur Basilica for panoramic views. Explore Le Marais, whose private homes once belonged to kings, noblemen and courtesans. Wander the old Jewish quarter to the Place des Vosges, the city's oldest and one of its most beautiful squares. See the art treasures of museums such as the Louvre, Musee d'Orsay, l'Orangerie, Centre Pompidou, Fondation Louis Vuitton and other major museums. Or visit smaller specialty museums off the beaten track. If desired, enjoy reservations at one of the restaurants atop the Eiffel Tower. Stroll the Latin Quarter, and relax in the Luxembourg Gardens. Shop exclusive boutiques along Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honore and Rue Royale. Take a break at Left Bank cafes made famous by poets and philosophers, and stop in the church of Saint-Germain-des-Pres. Upon request, Artisans of Leisure can arrange personalized shopping (antiques, flea markets, haute couture, tea, copperware and cooking utensils, chocolate, fashion and more). Perhaps spend hours enjoying a degustation gastronomique  at a leading restaurant.

One day, if desired, enjoy a private excursion to  Versailles  to tour Louis XIV’s opulent palace, including the Hall of Mirrors, the gardens, and the Hameau de la Reine, the mock hamlet created for Marie-Antoinette.

Next, visit the  Champagne  wine region and spend at a magnificent manor surrounded by parkland in the heart of Reims, an ancient city with Roman roots. During touring along the Route du Champagne, visit top local wineries to tour cellars and sample wines. Also visit highlights of Reims such as Notre-Dame Cathedral, a masterpiece of Gothic Art and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and see Art Deco architecture throughout town.

Continue by private car to  Burgundy  (Bourgogne), and stay at a chateau hotel in the countryside. With your private driver-guide, tour the Burgundy wine region, explore the beautiful Cote d'Or vineyards, learn about Burgundy’s unique terroir, and visit local cellars to sample top-quality wines made from Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes. One day, tour the historic center of Dijon, a city famous for delicious mustard and fine architecture. Also explore the well-preserved medieval center of Beaune—considered the capital of the Burgundy wine region—and perhaps purchase renowned local wines such as Chambertin, Romanee-Conti and Montrachet. Throughout touring in Burgundy, see a variety of structures and landscapes that together comprise a UNESCO World Heritage Site related to the history of wine production in the region.

Next, transfer to the  Beaujolais  wine region just outside Lyon. Stay at a spectacular restored 13th-century castle filled with antique furniture, wall paintings and Gothic fireplaces. In the afternoon, enjoy a private tour of the surrounding vineyards, wine cellars, and ancient villages. One day, enjoy a private excursion to  Lyon , the gastronomic capital of France, to explore local culinary traditions, see cultural highlights such as Roman ruins, churches and museums, and perhaps dine at one of the country's best restaurants.

Next, transfer to  Provence , and stay at a luxury hotel in the heart of the  Luberon  Valley . Enjoy private touring of local villages such as Gordes, Roussillon, Menerbes and L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue. Also visit other highlights in the region according to your interests, such as the best of Provencal markets, Roman ruins, nearby national parks, historic attractions in towns such as Avignon, art and architectural touring in Arles and St. Remy, antiques stores, colorful town squares and more.

Conclude on the beautiful  Cote d’Azur  and stay at a luxurious resort overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. Visit local towns along the waterfront and in the hills of the French Riviera and Monaco, such as Nice, Cannes, Eze, Saint-Paul de Vence, Antibes and Monte-Carlo. Touring options include exploring atmospheric villages, seeing the Prince’s Palace in Monte-Carlo, strolling through botanic gardens, browsing local markets, visiting art museums and the Chapelle du Rosaire (Matisse chapel), strolling along waterside promenades, sampling local culinary specialties, and much more, depending on your interests. We can also arrange special interest activities such as learning to make your own perfume at a workshop in Grasse, chartered boat excursions, wine tasting, biking and more. During leisure time, enjoy your luxury resort, or perhaps spend time at the beach.

Itinerary idea in detail

Ask us if you would also like us to arrange your international flights at our preferred rates.

Upon arrival at Marseille Provence Airport, you're met by your private driver and driven to your hotel in Gordes. One of Provence's best-known villages, it faces the Lubéron Valley. Enjoy this afternoon at leisure to acquaint yourself with your hotel and the winding cobbled streets of this medieval town, often referred to as the 'jewel of Provence'.

Gordes, Provence

Your private driver will pick you up this morning for a tour and tasting at a local olive oil mill in the heart of the Lubéron Valley. From here, you're driven to meet a local truffle-hunting expert, Robert, and his trained dog, Kita, joining them on a traditional truffle hunt through the valleys and woods of Provence. Afterwards, you will journey to the village of Ménerbes to enjoy a truffle lunch before returning to your hotel, where you will have the rest of the afternoon at leisure. We recommend taking a swim, relaxing in the spa, or just enjoying the commanding views from the hotel's gardens.

Gordes, Provence

This morning, your private driver takes you out to explore the beautiful Lubéron National Park and its many medieval villages, fields of lavender, and vivid sunflower meadows. Immerse yourself in a culture where locals have mastered the slow pace of life while visiting the canal village of Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, the medieval Abbaye de Sénanque, and the ocher quarries of Roussillon, among other sites.

Bell tower, Gordes

After checking out of your hotel in Gordes, you're driven to the Châteauneuf-du-Pape wine region. Named after the Pope's summer residence during the 14th century, this region is internationally renowned as one of the highest-quality wine-producing areas of France. With a small group and guide, you journey to the heart of the vineyards to gain an in-depth understanding of the land and agriculture. While here, enjoy a few tastings with some of the local producers. Your driver-guide will then bring you to your hotel in Avignon's old town with views of the colossal Palais des Papes (Papal Palace).

Palais des Papes, Avignon

You'll be met by your driver this morning and head into Provence for a Roman and medieval heritage tour. Starting with a visit to Arles, you visit a remarkable Roman amphitheater, still in use today, before exploring the city and a café that inspired artist Vincent van Gogh. Following a drive through the narrow, winding countryside, you arrive in the authentic hilltop village of Uzès. Have lunch here before exploring the village's historic square, browsing its boutiques and taking in panoramic views of the Provençal landscape. Finally, you visit the largely intact Pont du Gard, a Roman aqueduct used to connect Arles to the town of Nîmes, before returning to your hotel.

Arles, Provence

Today's private outing brings you south of Avignon to the picturesque mountain villages of Les Alpilles. You stop in towns such as Les Baux-de-Provence and Saint-Rémy-de-Provence to take in views of the sprawling landscape and stroll the medieval streets, pausing to enjoy lunch and do a bit of boutique shopping. You'll also visit the Carrières de Lumières (Quarry of Light), the Roman ruins of Glanum and the nearby monastery, Saint-Paul de Mausole, where Vincent van Gogh lived for a year in 1889.

Building façade in Avignon, Provence

Today, your private driver escorts you to Avignon's train station, where you board your train to Nice. Another private driver will meet you at Nice's train station and drive you to your hotel in Saint-Tropez. Situated on the French Riviera, the coastal town boasts views over the turquoise waters of the Mediterranean Sea.

Yachts and sailboats, Saint-Tropez

Spend the day at leisure, perhaps taking time to enjoy your hotel's facilities or venturing out to take in Saint-Tropez's sights. You may want to take a stroll downtown to visit streets lined with designer boutiques or relax on the white sands of Pampelonne Beach.

Luxury yacht, Saint-Tropez

After checking out of your hotel, you're picked up by your driver and driven to meet your private boat for your journey to Nice. Arriving in Nice, you're met by another driver for a private tour of Monaco, Monte Carlo and Èze. Your guide will introduce you to the second-smallest country in the world, Monaco, and walk you through its lavish Monte Carlo Casino. The tour concludes at the hilltop town of Èze, where you check in to your hotel.

Èze, French Riviera

Enjoy the day at your own leisure, acquainting yourself with your hotel and the town of Èze with its Mediterranean seascape and tranquil gardens.

Èze, French Riviera

Departing from your hotel this morning, you'll travel with your driver to the small seaside town of Villefranche-sur-Mer. Take some free time to explore this fortified town, wandering its streets and soaking up the sea views. Re-join your driver and venture toward the peninsula of Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, home to the Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild. Here, you can wander through the historic home and gardens to discover tapestries, frescoes, exotic plants and magnificent fountains. Before heading back to your hotel, stop at the beautiful Paloma Beach for a dip in the Mediterranean Sea.

Saying goodbye to the coastline for the day, you head west with your private driver for a visit to Grasse, where you can take a tour of the world-renowned Fragonard Perfumery. The short tour ends in a gift shop, where you can smell and test out perfumes covering a wide range of scents. Next, visit Tourrettes-sur-Loup and stroll through its narrow, cobbled streets before heading farther west to explore the medieval streets and art galleries of Saint-Paul-de-Vence. Later in the evening, you meet your yacht captain at the Port of Nice and board a private yacht for a sunset cruise.

Sail Boat in the Harbor, French Riviera

Today your private driver escorts you to Nice Airport for your onward flight.

Review: Hotel Martinez Cannes by Hyatt

Hotel Martinez

Located in france.

Nestled in the vibrant heart of Le Croisette, Hotel Martinez Cannes by Hyatt boasts an ideal location along the famed waterfront promenade of Cannes. Renowned for its opulence and breathtaking vistas of the Mediterranean Sea, Le Croisette spans roughly 2 kilometers along the bay. Lined with swaying palm trees, prestigious hotels, high-end boutiques, and fashionable cafes, this iconic promenade epitomizes glamour and luxury, offering guests an unforgettable Riviera experience.

Cannes stands as a renowned city nestled along the glamorous French Riviera, adorning the southeastern coast of France. It is positioned within the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region and finds its home within the Alpes-Maritimes department. Geographically blessed, Cannes enjoys a picturesque setting bordered by the Mediterranean Sea to the south, fostering a mild Mediterranean climate marked by warm summers and gentle winters.

Approximately 24 kilometers (about 15 miles) southwest of Nice, Cannes boasts convenient accessibility from Nice Côte d’Azur Airport, the nearest major airport catering to international and domestic flights. Our journey from Nice airport to Cannes via taxi took 45 minutes and cost €100 EUR. With its prime beachfront location, this hotel emerges as the premier Marriott choice in Cannes, offering guests unparalleled access to the beauty of the Riviera coastline.

Hotel Martinez Exterior

Style & Character

Outside the drive is a petite circle adorned with statues and with clients cars parked up. The building and entry way has an Art Deco feel and is stylish but not fancy or ornate like the Carlton Cannes up the road.

The foyer of the Hotel Martinez is awash with marble and fancy light fittings. There are glass cabinets showcasing the latest designer handbags and watches, and a circular hallway with a huge blue circular carpet gives way to a large and impressive marble staircase to one side and a large check in area on the other.

Hotel Martinez Drive

The entrance feels impressive and luxurious and fits well with the glamorous reputation of Cannes.

Service & Facilities

It is probably the beach and the promenade that you come to enjoy in Cannes, but this hotel also has numerous internal and external restaurants and a beach club but no pool.

Hotel Martinez Extrance

Rooms here are bright but fairly generic and lack the chicness of Cannes. They are alittle bland but some have terraces and balconies so these are the ones to pick.

Hotel Martinez Checkin In Area

Food & Drink

The restaurants at the Martinez Hotel in Cannes include La Palme d’Or, a Michelin-starred restaurant. Le Relais Martinez, a brasserie-style restaurant known for its vibrant atmosphere and classic French cuisine, the beach club restaurant, and The Martinez Bar, a chic and sophisticated venue where guests can unwind with expertly crafted cocktails, premium spirits, and fine wines.

Le Sud is the main restaurant that recaptures the friendly and joyful spirit of the Roaring Twenties in an elegant and contemporary setting. It offers innovative cuisine infused with Mediterranean influences, and its interior decor is inspired by the spirit of yachting. It has an outdoor terrace, bathed in the gentle sunlight, and provides an idyllic space to indulge in the splendor of the surrounding lush garden.

Hotel Martinez Sweeping Staircase

When we reviewed this hotel, we stayed at the Carlton Cannes, just a few buildings up the Croisette from The Martinez. The contrast between the decor of these hotels was stark. Both hotels are sophisticated with The Carlton offering Belle Epoch detailing and The Martinez offering an Art Deco look. We have compared The Carlton Cannes Vs. The Martinez separately.

The Martinez Cannes does not match up to The Carlton in the level of luxury, and if I needed to find a hotel to burn some Hyatt points, The Martinez certainly has the location and luxury setting.

What Are the Highest-Rated First-Class Airlines and the Costs?

D o you long for a life of luxury, where you live (and eat) like royalty? What if you could live the life of your dreams while cruising at 30,000 feet? That’s what first-class airlines offer — with high-end suites and state-of-the-art entertainment systems.

Watch Out: Don’t Book a Vacation on This Day of the Week Read: How To Build a Financial Plan From Zero

But if you are looking for luxury airlines, you probably want the best of the best, especially if you expect to pay top dollar. On that note, let’s take a look at how much these luxury airlines cost. So sit back, relax, and join us as we embark on a journey through the skies, discovering the best first-class airlines and their price tags .

Singapore Airlines

Several airlines are adding A380s to their fleets to offer luxury experiences, and Singapore Airlines is among them. Its first-class A380 is ranked first among first-class airlines by World Airline Awards and the Luxury Travel Expert.

The first-class A380 suites feature a bed that you can convert into a double bed, a chair that reclines, a TV and a full-size personal wardrobe. You also get specially designed carpeting and unlimited champagne to make it a first-class experience. It also comes with a first-class price tag that typically runs between $10,000 and $30,000 per ticket.

Emirates Airlines

Emirates offers several premium products, but you will find its most luxurious experience on the Boeing 777. Everything from the airline’s first-class lounge in Dubai to the lavatories for its first-class passengers feels high-end. One of the standout features of this suite is its floor-to-ceiling doors, offering you total privacy.

Take Our Poll: Are You Concerned About the Safety of Your Money in Your Bank Accounts?

The suites also feature 32-inch TVs and a seat that can fully recline into a bed. The suites also have premium features like virtual windows, personal climate controls and fine dining. First-class flights on Emirates are over $3,000 per seat, though that is cheap compared to Singapore Airlines and others.

Air France rolls out the red carpet for customers with its La Première flights aboard the Boeing 777-300ER fleet. The first-class suite features four seats with a 1-2-1 layout. A few features set Air France apart, including delectable dishes and an on-the-ground experience that includes rides in luxury cars. You also have privacy curtains around your bed and a desk lamp for working and reading.

As is typical with these ultra-premium flight experiences, there is a sky-high fare price of about $16,000 per ticket. But flying on La Première has more barriers than price, as booking requires elite status with Air France/KLM Flying Blue. The luxurious experience on La Première earns it second-place rankings from Upgraded Points and One Mile at a Time.

Etihad Airways

If you want a living experience that rivals that of a luxury apartment on the ground, the Etihad Residence on the A380 is one of the best choices you can make.

It features a living room, a bedroom, a shower room, and a vanity for each passenger. Yes, that’s right — you can shower while in flight. The Residence features a single aisle configuration for its seats and a large bed. There is also a leather sofa and a 32-inch TV. Finally, you get a private butler with an on-demand menu.

The typical fare for The Residence is upwards of $20,000. However, Etihad grounded its A380s for a time, and they will return in July 2023. Etihad’s spacious suites are good enough for a first-place ranking from Upgraded Points, plus fourth place from The Luxury Travel Expert.

All Nippon Airways

All Nippon Airways (ANA) has significantly upgraded its first-class experience in recent years. Its new-and-improved first-class flights are available on select 777-300ERs. If you can book one of those seats, prepare to be impressed. Its seats are spectacularly roomy and feature doors for better privacy. However, some say its seats are a little too private, which can make it difficult to communicate if you’re traveling with someone.

Still, that’s a relatively minor drawback considering how great the overall experience is. The food and drinks are great, and passengers get complimentary high-speed Wi-Fi. These features are good enough for a third-place ranking from One Mile at a Time and a fifth-place ranking from World Airline Awards. As usual, there is a first-place price tag of around $15,000 and up.

Bottom Line

If you want to wine and dine in the sky and have some of the best privacy available, first-class airlines are the way to go. In some cases, the luxury begins as soon as you arrive at the airport.

These experiences won’t come cheap, though, with most flights having five-figure price tags. But if that doesn’t deter you, these airlines spare no expense to pamper you.

Stay at ‘Vanderpump Villa’ in south of France for as low as $140 a night

Now that the “ Scandoval ” drama has settled, it’s time to shift our attention to Hulu’s “ Vanderpump Villa ,” the latest reality show centered on one of Lisa Vanderpump’s businesses. While the show promises its fair share of drama among the chateau’s staff, it also offers a glimpse into the world of luxury travel experiences in the south of France.

Château Rosabelle, the stunning property featured in “Vanderpump Villa,” was just a temporary pop-up hotel created for the show’s filming in 2023. However, it was within an existing property, Château Saint-Joseph , in the French countryside near the medieval city of Carcassonne. Saint-Joseph was transformed by Vanderpump and production designer James McGowan in just three weeks, according to Business Insider .

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Château Saint-Joseph (Chateau Rosabelle - Vanderpump Villa) (@chateausaintjoseph)

The château, owned by Delphine and Frédéric Roubieu, is used for hosting weddings and other events, but most importantly for hotel-style stays during the summer months. Guests can choose from a variety of accommodations, including single rooms, suites and multibedroom cottages, its website states.

For larger groups, the château offers three gîtes (a multiple-bedroom cottage on the property), with the largest being the six-bedroom St. Elisabeth gîte, which can comfortably accommodate up to 15 people. Rates for this spacious, 1,851-square-foot cottage start at approximately $1,150 per night.

Those looking for a more intimate experience can opt for one of the 12 smaller rooms and suites, each with its own unique charm. The most luxurious option is the Chambre Toile de Jouy, featuring a gold bathtub and park views, priced at around $386 per night.

However, the real surprise is the affordability of the cheapest room, the Chambre Gisèle. This cozy 226-square-foot room on the castle’s second floor boasts vintage floral wallpaper and an adjoining bathroom with a tub — all for just $139 a night.

So, whether you’re dreaming of a lavish getaway or simply looking to experience a taste of the “Vanderpump Villa” lifestyle, Château Saint-Joseph offers a range of options to suit various budgets.
