BCCI officials confirm their visit to Pakistan for 2023 Asia Cup: report

Roger Binny, the current President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), along with the Vice President, Rajeev Shukla, have confirmed the tour of Pakistan, according to a media report.

In a statement, Roger stated that he and the Vice President, Rajiv Shukla, will arrive in Pakistan on September 4. They will also watch Asia Cup matches in Pakistan besides official receptions.

Roger further said that he has no hesitation in going to Pakistan; his visit to Pakistan has always been memorable. Pakistanis are very hospitable hosts.

Roger also said that he hopes that his visit to Pakistan will benefit the cricket relations between Pakistan and India. Pak-India matches are the biggest and most-watched contests in Asia.

It is worth noting that Roger Binni will tour Pakistan after 18 years; the last time he came to Pakistan was in 2005 for the Asian Cricket Council's camp.

Previously, as reported by Cricket Pakistan last week, the President of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) and BCCI Secretary Jay Shah, was invited by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to watch the opening match of the Asia Cup.

The 2023 Asia Cup is set to be held in Pakistan and Sri Lanka between August 30 and September 17, with Pakistan taking over Nepal on August 30 in Multan.

For the first time in 17 years, two senior BCCI office-bearers — president Roger Binny and vice-president Rajeev Shukla — travelled to Pakistan and reached Lahore on Monday after crossing the Attari-Wagah, honouring the PCB's invitation to watch Asia Cup there.

The last time an Indian cricket team travelled to Pakistan was in 2008 for the Asia Cup. Pakistan last hosted India for a bilateral series in 2006.

The BCCI had refused to send its team to Pakistan for the Asia Cup, which led to a bi-nation 'Hybrid Model' arrangement. But in a heartening gesture, the BCCI approved former Test player Binny and Congressman Shukla's participation in a dinner hosted by the Governor of Punjab province of Pakistan

"Pakistan is the host of Asia Cup. The visit by this delegation is purely cricketing and there is no politics involved. It is a two-day visit and the Governor of Punjab is hosting us for dinner and all three teams Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Pakistan will be present. We shouldn't mix cricket with politics," Shukla told mediapersons.

Shukla, who has been with the Indian cricket board for more than two decades, was a part of BCCI delegation that came for the historic 'Friendship Series' back in 2004.

Asked about the chances of resumption of bilateral cricketing contests, the Rajya Sabha MP said: "The decision with regards to bilateral series is taken by the Indian government and we would follow whatever the government suggests." Binny recollected his last visit to Pakistan which incidentally was more than 16 years ago when he was a part of the Asian Cricket Council.

"My last visit of Pakistan was in 2006 when I was a part of Asian Cricket Council. Pakistan's hospitality has been very, very good and we were treated very well," said Binny.

Roger Binny and Rajeev Shukla will head to Pakistan in order to represent the BCCI as they attend a dinner to celebrate Pakistan's hosting of the Asia Cup 2023.

The President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India  Roger Binny and Vice-President Rajeev Shukla crossed the Attari–Wagah border to visit Pakistan for Asia Cup 2023.

The two departed to Pakistan from the Punjab’s airport in Amritsar where Rajeev Shukla spoke to media personnel.

Shukla was quoted by ANI, “This two-day visit is purely from the point of view of cricket, nothing political.”

Binny was also quoted by ANI, he said, “I am looking forward to my visit since we’ve been to Colombo to see matches in Sri Lanka.”

The two were meant to be invited as a representative of the BCCI for an official dinner at Lahore in order to celebrate Pakistan’s hosting of the tournament.

Pakistan is only hosting four matches of the thirteen matches due to the BCCI’s reluctance to play their games in Pakistan. Sri Lanka was called upon as the co-hosts with the rest of the matches being played in Pallekelle and Colombo.

The BCCI has come under heavy criticism for picking Sri Lanka to host the rest of the games due to the overcast weather conditions. The rains washed out the marquee clash between India vs Pakistan as well which disappointed many of the fans.

Ex-Pakistan Cricket Board Chairman, Najam Sethi was also critical of the BCCI’s selection of Sri Lanka as the hosts claiming that UAE would have been a better option to host as the matches are highly unlikely to be washed out due to rain.

India is taking on Nepal and will require a win or a draw to secure themselves to progress through to the Super 4s stage of the tournament.

Pakistan has qualified for the Super 4 stage and was the first side to do so after managing a win against Nepal and a draw against India.

  • BCCI president Roger Binny and vice-president Rajiv Shukla will attend Asia Cup matches in Pakistan
  • There will be no discussions regarding the resumption of bilateral cricket between India and Pakistan
  • Pakistan will host 4 matches in the Asia Cup 2023 while Sri Lanka will get to host 9 matches

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has nominated its President, Roger Binny, and Vice-President, Rajeev Shukla, who will be traveling to Pakistan to attend the Asia Cup 2023. This decision comes after an invitation was extended by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to the BCCI to witness the matches in the Pakistan leg of the tournament, which is set to commence on August 30, 2023.

Both officials will represent the BCCI at the Asia Cup, a prestigious cricket tournament featuring teams from India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh. However, a source has clarified that there will be no discussions regarding the resumption of bilateral cricket between India and Pakistan during this visit. The issue of bilateral cricket ties between the two nations is a sensitive one, requiring clearance from the government. The BCCI has maintained a clear stance on this matter, stating that any such discussions would need governmental approval.

While the primary purpose of the visit is to promote the message that cricket brings people together, the BCCI representatives may engage in discussions about the World Cup and general matters related to India and Pakistan cricket. However, these discussions will not extend to the topic of bilateral cricket ties.

This visit marks a significant event in the cricketing world, as it represents a rare instance of high-ranking BCCI officials visiting Pakistan. Despite the complexities surrounding cricket relations between the two countries, such interactions are seen as crucial for maintaining dialogue and fostering mutual understanding within the broader context of international cricket.

BCCI's visit to Pakistan: What did they discuss?

"PCB demand was cricket between two countries be resumed": BCCI VP Shukla after Pakistan visit

BCCI

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president Roger Binny and vice-president Rajeev Shukla arrived at Attari-Wagah border in Amritsar on Wednesday after concluding their visit to Pakistan.

Binny and Shukla travelled to Pakistan following an invitation to members of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) and other cricket boards by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to attend Asia Cup matches taking place in Lahore. They also met players from Pakistan, Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Sri Lanka teams at a gala dinner there.

Shukla said that the visit was a good one and hospitality of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) was good. The board had demanded the resumption of cricketing ties between India and Pakistan, but it would be decided by the centre, said Shukla.

"It was a two-day visit and a good visit. The Governor hosted a dinner in our honour. The hospitality of the people of the Pakistan Cricket Board was also good. Their demand was that cricket between the two countries should be resumed, we said it would be decided by govt and we would do whatever our govt would say. It was a cricket visit and there was no political agenda," said Shukla.

Also, Binny termed the visit as a "fantastic experience".

"It was a fantastic experience. Like when we played the test match in 1984 the same hospitality was given to us. We were treated like kings over there, so it was an excellent time for us. We were able to meet all the Pakistan officials and the Pakistan Cricket Board. They are very happy with the outcome of us coming there as we were so happy to be there also at the same time," said Binny.

Notably, the final Asia Cup 2023 in Pakistan will take place on Wednesday in Lahore between Bangladesh and Pakistan. It is the first match of the Super Four stage of the tournament, the rest of which will be played in Colombo.

From Group A, Pakistan and India have qualified for this stage. From Group B, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh have qualified.

India will take on Pakistan on September 10, Sri Lanka on September 12 and Bangladesh on September 15.

Bcci secretary shah accepts pcb chief zaka’s invitation to visit pakistan.

bcci open to travel to pakistan

KARACHI: Board of Control for Cricket in India secretary Jay Shah has accepted Pakistan Cricket Board Interim Management Committee chairman Zaka Ashraf’s invitation to visit Pakistan ahead of the Asia Cup, Minister for Inter-provincial Coordination Ehsan-ur-Rehman Mazari said on Tuesday.

Zaka extended the invitation to Shah, who is also the president of the Asian Cricket Council, on the sidelines of the upcoming International Cricket Council meetings in South Africa before informing Mazari of the development, according to the minister himself.

“I just spoke with Zaka Ashraf and he told me that he has invited Jay Shah to visit Pakistan and witness the security arrangements firsthand,” Mazari told Dawn . “Shah has accepted the invitation and has also invited Zaka in return to visit India ahead of the World Cup.”

Zaka’s meeting with Shah in Durban came amid doubts whether Pakistan will visit India for the World Cup, which is set to be staged from October 5 to November 19.

The bitter rivals last played a bilateral series in 2012 but Pakistan did travel to India in 2016 to feature in the T20 World Cup with much-anticipated match-ups between the two sides only coming in multi-team tournaments.

“Shah told Zaka it was because of government’s orders that the Indian cricket team cannot visit Pakistan and that if the governments of both countries meet and try to solve the issue, India can possibly visit,” said Mazari. “The ice is definitely melting.”

It is still uncertain whether Pakistan will travel for the World Cup, with the country’s government currently carrying out due diligence over the issue through an 11-member special committee constituted by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and headed by Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto.

Mazari is one of the members of the committee and had expressed his “personal opinion” over the issue earlier this week.

He had said that Pakistan should not visit India for the World Cup given that the latter denied coming to Pakistan for the Asia Cup, which is scheduled for August-September.

The minister voiced his stance at a time when a “hybrid model” — which would see Pakistan and Sri Lanka hosting the competition to facilitate India’s participation — had already been accepted by all Asian Cricket Council (ACC) members, hinting towards the PCB potentially stepping back from the settlement.

On Tuesday, however, Mazari said he “didn’t have a problem” with the “hybrid model”, hours after Zaka had confirmed to Dawn that that PCB would honour its commitment that the previous interim Management Committee under Najam Sethi had made with its ACC colleagues.

“Although we don’t support the hybrid model, we will go along with what the PCB’s past management had taken the decision with ACC,” Zaka said.

About Pakistan’s participation in the World Cup, he said: “The PM has formed the committee to decide on venues and if adequate security arrangements were there as per the Government of Pakistan. They will decide on both matters.”

Zaka wasn’t available to comment about his meeting with Shah later on Tuesday but earlier he had said that he would try to explore with his BCCI counterpart the possibilities of the return of bilateral cricket between India and Pakistan.

“Today hopefully [I] will have a meeting with Jay Shah to discuss relations between both boards and build confidence building measures for both countries to play in both countries and develop relations in cricket,” Zaka had said. “We will discuss issues that come up from both sides.”

India to travel to Pakistan for Champions Trophy? PCB seeks BCCI nod at ICC meet

bcci open to travel to pakistan

The upcoming Champions Trophy 2025 in Pakistan casts a shadow of uncertainty as the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) seeks confirmation from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) regarding India cricket team participation.

PCB Chairman seeks assurance in Dubai

Newly appointed PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi is expected to attend the ICC meeting in Dubai next week. While the Champions Trophy is scheduled for February-March 2025, Naqvi reportedly intends to secure a commitment from BCCI secretary Jay Shah on the sidelines of the meeting.

Government Clearance Hinder BCCI decision

However, with nearly a year to go, the BCCI is unlikely to make any immediate promises. Security concerns and the need for clearance from the Indian government remain significant hurdles.

Lessons from the Asia Cup “Hybrid Model”

The PCB’s apprehension stems from last year’s Asia Cup. India’s refusal to travel to Pakistan forced a “hybrid model” where some matches were held in Sri Lanka. The PCB is eager to avoid a similar situation for the Champions Trophy.

PCB Aims for Early Confirmation: Champions Trophy

Naqvi reportedly believes that an early confirmation from the BCCI would benefit both boards. He intends to convince the ICC and BCCI of the importance of a quick decision for promotional purposes.

bcci open to travel to pakistan

PCB Assurances and Upgraded Facilities

Naqvi is also expected to assure the BCCI of improved security arrangements in Pakistan, citing the recent completion of elections and a new government. He will likely highlight the upgraded facilities at stadiums in Karachi, Lahore, and Rawalpindi.

India Cricket Team awaits Government Nod:

The BCCI, however, remains cautious. A BCCI source told PTI that the decision to play in Pakistan rests solely with the Indian government. They believe Naqvi’s request for a confirmation in March 2024 for a tournament in February-March 2025 is unrealistic.

Uncertainty Looms Until Government Decision

With the BCCI awaiting government clearance, a final decision on India’s participation in the Champions Trophy remains elusive. The ICC meeting in Dubai could provide some clarity, but a definitive answer will likely hinge on developments in the coming months.

"We'd love to play a role": Cricket Australia CEO desires to host India-Pakistan bilateral series

M elbourne [Australia], March 27 (ANI): Cricket Australia (CA) has expressed the desire to host a bilateral series between India and Pakistan if the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) agree to clash in a bilateral contest in future for the first time in 12 years.

India and Pakistan Cricket Team are set to visit Australia for their respective series in November. Where on one side India will travel to play a five-match Test series starting on November 22 at Perth and on the other hand Pakistan's side will play a three-match ODI and T20I series against the Men in Yellow.

India and Australia last played a bilateral series in 2012-13 and since then both teams have locked horns against each other either in the Asia Cup or in the ICC events.

Following the mega success of the 2022 T20 World Cup match between India and Pakistan at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), where 90,293 fans witnessed a last-ball thriller which saw Virat Kohli play an iconic knock of 82*, CA, the Melbourne Cricket Club (MCG operators), and the Victorian government have now expressed interest in two teams at the MCG, which could be a great move for them financially.

Cricket Australia (CA) CEO Nick Hockley opined that they would be happy to host the bilateral series between India and Pakistan at the iconic MCG if they get an opportunity.

"I think anyone that was here for the India-Pakistan game at the MCG, it will go down as one of the most memorable occasions, not just sporting occasions, that I've ever been to. So people want to see that contest. We would love to host that if the opportunity arose. If we can play a role, we'd love to play a role," Hockley stated as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.

"We're so excited to host Pakistan. We're so excited to host India. If we can help, that's great. But I think in many ways, that's a bilateral series. It's really for others to make that happen," the CA CEO added.

CA's head of scheduling, Peter Roach, admitted on Tuesday that Australia would also be interested in hosting a tri-series, which last occurred between India and Pakistan during the 1999-2000 season, rather than just a neutral bilateral series, but he noted that there was not sufficient space in the current Future Tours Programme (FTP).

"We haven't got a tri-series in the FTP. Going forward we're always interested in opportunities for matches and contests that will engage our fans. It's fair to say every country in the world would love to see India and Pakistan compete in their country," Roach asserted.

"We're on record as saying we're one of those countries that has asked the question. There's no room in the schedules to do that at the moment. We'll keep talking to them in any other opportunities that arise, but in this specific example there are not going to be any changes to the schedule," he concluded. (ANI)

ICC won't force BCCI to send Indian team to Pakistan for Champions Trophy, will 'look for alternatives' if needed

Uae with three international stadiums ready for use, it could well be the second country in a 'hybrid model' in case india doesn't want to travel to pakistan..

ICC would not apply pressure on BCCI to send its team to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy in 2025 if the Indian government does not allow the same. An ICCI Board member said the parent body of cricket can even consider alternative options - the most prominent one being hosting the Champions Trophy in February-March next year in a hybrid model.

Pakistan captain Babar Azam and India captain Rohit Sharma

Last year's Asia Cup was played in a hybrid model when India did not travel to Pakistan, the original host of the tournament. All of India's group games and the final were played in Sri Lanka while the rest took place in Sri Lanka. It is still early days as far as the Champions Trophy is concerned but the idea of using UAE as a potential venue cannot be entirely discarded.

With February and March being two ideal months to play cricket in the UAE and three international stadiums ready for use, it could well be the second country in a 'Hybrid Model' in case India doesn't want to travel to Pakistan. The eight teams are expected to be divided into two groups and India's group matches could well be held in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah.

ICC doesn't expect its members to go against government

An ICC Board member, who is privy to the developments, feels that any decision by BCCI will only be taken closer to the tournament.

"Every member can raise concerns for discussion at Board meetings and then it would go to a vote. But if the government (of a member nation) expressly say that they can't play there, ICC would need to look for an alternative," a veteran administrator, who has attended multiple board meetings, told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

"....because ICC Board's position remains that it doesn't expect its members to go against any policy/instructions issued by its own government," he said.

India and Pakistan's bilateral cricketing ties have been severed since 2008. Although Pakistan did travel to India for a white-ball series in 2012, India haven't visited their neighbours in close to a decade and a half. Notably, Pakistan also travelled to India during the 2011 ODI World Cup, the 2016 T20 World Cup and the ODI World Cup last year.

Teams from England, Australia, New Zealand have all travelled to Pakistan in recent past and the BCCI will also be under pressure to visit the strife-torn country for the multi-nation engagement. Asked if any hesitation from India would lead to a vote against the country, the source said such a situation would not arise if there is a government directive.

"Don't forget threat perception for an Indian cricket team would always be higher compared to Australia, England and New Zealand," said a former BCCI office-bearer, who is aware of the inner workings of the global body.

Will diplomacy work?

In January-February, the Indian Davis Cup team was in Islamabad for its World Group Play-off tie and the players as well as the support staff were satisfied with the security arrangements.

However, the stakes are considerably higher when it comes to the Indian cricket team featuring superstars like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah and Rishabh Pant.

"The BCCI would obviously be compelled to look at it from the point of view that Pakistan government allowed its team to play in the World Cup in India last year.

"So, this being a global event and not a continental one like Asia Cup, the Indian government might take a softer stance. BCCI president Roger Binny and VP Rajiv Shukla had travelled to Pakistan during the Asia Cup," hoped the ICC board member.

T20 World Cup 2024: Pakistan pacer Mohammad Amir comes back from retirement after ‘positive discussion with PCB’

Whatsapp

T20 World Cup 2024: Almost three years after he announced his retirement from international cricket, Pakistan's controversial player Mohammad Amir announced his comeback to the game and made himself available for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024 in the United States and West Indies. The left-arm pacer can be a useful addition to Pakistan's T20 squad and is expected to be summoned for the team's camp.

"I still dream of playing for Pakistan ! life brings us to the points where at times we have to reconsider our decisions, There have been a few positive discussions between myself and the PCB where they respectfully made me feel that I was needed and can still play for Pakistan after discussing with family and we'll wishers I declare that I am available to be considered for upcoming t20WC," Mohammad Amir said in a post on X.

“I want to do this for my country as it comes before my personal decisions. Donning the green jersey and serving my country has always been, and will continue to be my greatest aspirations," the Pakistan player added.

Controversial player

Mohammad Amir's announcement to come back from retirement is not going to be as smooth as it looks as the pacer carries a controversial past. He was banned from cricket for five years on spot-fixing charges and remained away from the ground from 2010-2015. Mohammad Amir received the least punishment in the case as two other Pakistan players- Salman Butt and Mohammad Asif, face a ban of 10 and 7 years.

Mohammad Amir's stats are not that great, especially in T20 cricket , where he played 50 matches and clinched 59 wickets. The bowling average of the pacer has been 21.16 with an economy rate of 7.00. Mohammad Amir's best T20 bowling performance has been 4/13 and the Pakistan player has no five-wicket hauls in the shortest format of the game.

T20 World Cup 2024 is set to kick off from June 1 with the United States and Canada facing each other in the opening match. The high-voltage India vs Pakistan T20 World Cup 2024 clash is scheduled in New York on June 9.

BEIJING: Chinese President Xi Jinping told Prime Minister of the Netherlands Mark Rutte that he welcomes more Dutch companies to invest in China on Wednesday in Beijing.

At the invitation of Chinese Premier Li Qiang, Rutte is paying a working visit to China on March 26 and 27.

Hailing the Netherlands as a gateway of China-Europe cooperation, Xi said China is willing to promote the development of China-Netherlands open and pragmatic partnership for comprehensive cooperation.

China will expand the import of high-quality products from the Netherlands, he said, expressing hope for a fair and transparent business environment for Chinese enterprises in the Netherlands.

The Chinese president urged cooperation in artificial intelligence, green transformation and silver-haired economy while promoting traditional cooperation in agriculture, water conservancy and energy.

It is hoped that both sides will facilitate personnel exchanges and promote educational, cultural and people-to-people exchanges, Xi said.

China is ready to strengthen coordination with the Netherlands in multilateral settings such as the United Nations and the World Trade Organization and jointly address global challenges including climate change and biodiversity, he added.

Regarding the economy, he said de-coupling is a dead end and the only choice is open cooperation.

The Chinese side always believes that the ‘win or lose’ binary mindset is outdated and that a real safe world is an interconnected and interdependent one, Xi said.

“Artificially creating technological barriers and cutting off industrial and supply chains will only lead to division and confrontation,” he said.

“The Chinese people also have the legitimate right to development and no force can stop China’s scientific and technological development and progress,” the president said.

Xi also said China regards Europe as a partner and hopes the Dutch side will play a positive role in promoting mutual understanding between China and Europe and building a constructive relationship.

The Dutch prime minister affirmed that de-coupling is not a policy option for his government, as any act harming China’s development interests will hurt itself.

Rutte said the Dutch side values its friendship with China and is willing to deepen their partnership. He expressed appreciation for China’s 15-day visa-free travel policy for Dutch visitors, saying that his country is willing to facilitate personnel exchanges.

The Netherlands is ready to strengthen cooperation in economy and trade, and reducing carbon emissions, he said, adding that the Dutch side will enhance coordination with China in multilateral settings such as the G20 as well as issues regarding regional and global hotspots.
