If you are on a budget and still want to experience Peniche and visit the Berlenga Archipelago, this is the perfect place to stay. Rated 9.2/10 on Booking.com, you know you are staying in a quality place.

The Archipelago can be visited May to October and it is a important Nature Reserve and diving heaven.

Important things to know about the Berlengas

Berlengas Archipelago, located 10 km off the coast of Peniche, consists of the island of Berlenga and the islets of Estelas and Farilhões-Forcadas. The Archipelago is part of the Berlengas Natural Reserve, a protected area created in 1981 and a part of the UNESCO Biosphere Heritage Site since 2011. The Berlengas is a fantastic site to explore by bird lovers as they are home to the only colonies of pelagic seabirds off mainland Portugal and five species of seabirds breed here.

Visit the most important attractions on the Berlenga island including the São João Baptista Fort

Nature enthusiasts will find species of plants that occur exclusively in this Archipelago: Berlengas Arméria, Berlengas Pulicaria and Berlengas Hernia. The surrounding marine environment is also home to an extremely rich underwater ecosystem, making it a diving heaven. The surrounding waters are full of biodiversity and an abundance of numerous species of fish. The natural beauty of the island of Berlenga attracts visitors to scenic sites such as Furado Grande cave and the Cova do Sono.

The arc of the Elephant’s Trunk. , the Quebrada Valley, the Carreiro dos Cações and the Maldita cliff are also truly spectacular to see. The Berlengs is the only island in the Archipelago with inhabitants throughout the year, and visitors can access the island between May and October. Berlenga is also home to the famous São João Baptista fort, built in the 17th century to serve as a military defence site.

Things to do and see on Berlengas

São João Baptista fort

Once you rich the island, navigating around it and exploring it at your own pace is very easy. Several pathways lead you to various sites where you can learn more about the place from information signs. I started my day by heading straight to the São João Baptista fort. The trail markings are very clear, so it is straightforward to navigate around the island.

Duque de Bragança Lighthouse

The Berlenga Island Lighthouse, located at the highest point of the Archipelago, is one of the oldest lighthouses in Portugal. Initially built in 1758, it was further rebuilt in 1836 to the state it is today. Towards the late 1980s, the lighthouse was automated, and for the past 20+ years, works solely on solar energy.

Berlenga is known for geological formations including caves.

Praia do Carreiro do Mosteiro Beach

Also known as Praia da Berlenga Grande beach, it is probably one of the most striking beaches I have visited. The second the boat reaches the island, you can see this beautiful beach with crystal clear waters and fine golden sand.

Berlengas caves

The island is full of beautiful geological formations like the Berlenga caves. You can only visit the caves and other intriguing formations like the Elephant’s Trunk from the water. You will have the option to explore the coast on a Berlenga tour .

Visitor Centre

Located very close to the boat docking port, features a small but well-curated exhibition about Berlengas’ ecosystem. Created in 2015 to educate visitors about the need to preserve and protect this fragile environment. You can reach the visitor centre following the pathway once you leave the boat.

Final thoughts on visiting the Berlengas

I have been to the Berlenga Archipelago a few times and explored this magnificent island on my own and with a tour guide. From personal experience, I must admit that there is no better way to learn about the island than form a dedicated guide. I went on a fantastic tour with Feeling Berlengas and can’t recommend it enough.

The guide was highly knowledgeable, and I got to explore the island at my own pace and see the fantastic landscape from the water. If you plan on visiting Berlengas, make sure to book your spot in advance, as the island is gaining in popularity at a staggering speed. Berlengas and Peniche are totally worth visiting, even if you are planning just a day trip here.

This passion for the sea and for the region they grew up in was passed on to their children from an early age. It was through them that the Berlengas tours became more frequent and in 2010 Feeling Berlenga® was born.

More than a brand, the first one of its kind in the region, Feeling Berlenga® has transformed the way visitors discover the Berlengas Natural Reserve.

The training and friendliness of the team, the respect for the environment and the investment made in the renovation of boats make Feeling Berlenga® the number one choice for tourists who want to take a Berlenga Island tour for the first time or simply revisit this natural paradise.

This is a great service. Staff is very friendly, they replied very quickly to my questions, and we sorted everything through WhatsApp. We had to pay a reservation fee and the remaining amount was paid on the day in their office in the marine. We took a boat trip to Berlenga island with a caves tour.

The journey is well organized, the staff is very professional, friendly and speak many languages. We especially appreciated the friendliness of Paulo and Margarida who were sharing interesting information about the island on the journey to it and on the special cave trip. The return trip to the island is 22€ and an additional 8€ for the cave tour. Both are definitely worth it!!

Óbidos is most certainly on the list of must-see destinations for those visiting  Portugal . But many may not know that just an hour away from the famous medieval town (30 minutes by car and another 30 by boat) is one of the most beautiful nature reserves in the country: Berlengas.

This set of small islands and rocks, 10km (6 miles) off the coast of  Peniche , consists of Berlenga Grande, Estelas and Farilhões-Forcado, which Unesco recognized as a Biosphere Reserve in 2011. Of the islands that make up the Berlengas archipelago, only Berlenga Grande is visitable. But, far from the thousands of people who walk the streets of Óbidos every day, Berlenga Grande has a daily limit of 550 visitors and tours only happen between March and October. In 2020, authorities imposed this limit to preserve this exceptional natural habitat and nesting destination for several seabirds, some unique to the Portuguese islands, such as the Cory’s shearwater and the Band-rumped Storm-petrel.

Plan your visit to Berlenga Grande with this guide to the island's top experiences, what to bring, and how to book a trip.

A photographer walks along a trail in a nature reserve with a lighthouse in the background

Walk the Berlenga trails

The best way to explore Berlenga Grande is by walking the trail along the island. Starting from the pier, the first leg of the path begins near Carreiro dos Cações, the narrowest part of the island, and runs for 1.5km (1 mile) along the east side, also called Ilha Velha. Following the dirt track, you will find several local fishing spots and a view over the other islands: Estelas and Farilhões.

Head back to the viewpoint overlooking the Carreiro dos Cações, where the second part of the trail begins. This busier route leads to Farol da Berlenga and Forte de São João Baptista, the two main buildings in Berlenga Grande.

The climb to the lighthouse is steep, leading to the island's highest point, 92m (300ft) above sea level. Marquês de Pombal commissioned the Farol da Berlenga in 1758. It has been in operation since 1842, but is closed to visitors.

From there, follow the sign that leads to Forte de São João Baptista, a military construction built in the 16th century to defend the Portuguese coast from pirate attacks from Spain and France. It later served as a base for the British during the Napoleonic Invasions. The view from the cliff above the fort is one of the most beautiful on the island, especially on sunny days. Descend to visit the fortress's interior and take a dip from the small pier right next to it.

If you want to avoid going down to the fortress, you can always continue the trail to reach the westernmost part of the island. This path is less traveled and ideal for watching the birds that inhabit the Berlengas. If you visit in late spring and early summer, you will see thousands of black-winged gulls accompanied by their chicks.

People play on the beach and swim in the turquoise waters of a secluded cove backed by large rocks

Take a boat trip to visit the caves, then hit the beach

One alternative way to explore the Berlenga Grande is by taking a boat ride to visit the different caves that have naturally formed over time.

The visit begins at the pier and follows the island's cutouts, entering caves that amaze with their formations and colors, not to mention the turquoise hue of the water. You will test your imagination by distinguishing in the rocks the body of a whale or a person's face, not to mention the Elephant's Trunk, one of Berlenga's most famous rock formations.

The boat trip also passes by the Forte de São João Baptista, allowing a different view of the fortress, and continues to Cova do Sonho (Dream Cave), so nicknamed because it is one of the fishers' places of choice to spend the night, due to its calmer waters.

Renowned for its marine life, Berlengas is also perfect for snorkeling, diving, kayaking, or canoeing.

Set aside an hour during your visit to enjoy the Carreiro do Mosteiro beach. This stretch of sand is small and fills up quickly, but it's ideal for cooling off in some of Portugal's most beautiful and transparent waters.

There are three accommodation options on Berlenga

Day trips to Berlenga last four hours, but you can choose to spend the night or even a few days.

The Bairro dos Pescadores, near the pier, has one serviced accommodation option — Pavilhão Sol e Mar — with the only restaurant on the island. However, you must book in advance (+351 262 750 331/+351 919 543 105) as it has only six rooms.

If you want a different experience, you can stay at the Forte de São João Baptista. You will sleep in an old cell and must bring all your essentials, including bed linen. The reservation is made directly with the  Associação Amigos das Berlengas .

Finally, there is also the possibility of camping. To secure a spot for your tent, contact the  Peniche Tourist Office . Remember, space is limited.

A figure follows a narrow stone bridge towards an island

It's best to bring food and water with you

Berlenga Island has limited resources, with few places to get supplies. In addition to the restaurant located at Pavilhão Sol e Mar, there is a single cafe called Castelinho, which is situated within a small fortress and serves light meals.

Due to the scarcity of what’s on offer, the prices are quite high, so bring your food and plenty of water to stay hydrated.

How to get to Berlenga

It only takes a morning or an afternoon to visit Berlenga Grande and get to know this nature reserve. To get there, you must book your round trip by boat from the Port of Peniche with one of the  local operators . Confirm the sea forecast before embarking on the trip, as it can become rough once you pass Cabo Carvoeiro towards the island.

It is also essential to get the  Berlengas Pass , a mandatory visit permit instituted by the Portuguese government to control the presence on the island. Due to the island's limitations, it is advisable to book your trip and the Berlenga Pass as soon as possible, especially if you plan to visit on the weekend or during the months of July and August.

Driving your a car is the best way to get to Peniche, giving you more freedom with your schedule, but you can also get there by bus with  Rodoviária do Oeste from Lisbon's Campo Grande station.

How to visit the Berlengas, Peniche – Complete Guide

How to visit the Berlengas ? At first glance, it may seem a bit complicated, but if you are well informed, it is not that difficult. Follow our tips, read for all the information below about the archipelago, what to do, and of course, where to stay and how to visit the Berlengas.

The trip to the Berlengas is legendary… though not always for the best reasons. The limited access, the chaos that is the new Berlenga Pass, and above all, the famous choppy sea of Peniche make the trip a little complicated. Yet, the truth is that the Berlengas is a paradise, one of the most beautiful places in Portugal , and that’s why it’s worth every effort to go there.

Where are the Berlengas?

The Berlengas is an archipelago on the Portuguese coast formed by three sets of granite islands:

  • Berlenga Grande (Large Berlenga)

The islands of the Berlengas Archipelago are located between 10 and 17 km from Cape Carvoeiro in Peniche. The closest island is Berlenga Grande which is 10 km away. The crossing time varies according to the boat chosen for the trip and the sea and wind conditions.

Peniche is the only access point to the Berlengas and is located in the central region of Portugal, about 100km north of Lisbon (1h15) and 260 km south of Porto (2h30).

The Large Berlenga island is the only habitable but has no permanent population throughout the year. It is also the only island that can be visited, as there are no tours or trips to Estelas and Farilhões. Despite being relatively small, it has an area of almost 80 hectares, about 1.5 km long and 800 meters wide. The maximum altitude is 85 meters at the lighthouse.

Berlenga is almost entirely divided by a huge seismic fault, which formed two narrow bays called Carreiro do Cação and Carreiro do Mosteiro (where the beach is). In the northern part of the island, we have the fishing village, access to the beach, and the port, while in the southern part, we have the fortress of S. João Baptista, the lighthouse, and the cisterns.

In 1981, the natural reserve of Berlendas was created, and in 2011 it became the fifth UNESCO Biosphere World Reserve in Portugal. About 98% of the protected area of the Berlengas reserve is marine, as it includes the emerged area of the group of islands and islets, and its adjacent marine area, with depths up to a maximum depth of 520 m.

How to visit Berlengas?

The only way to visit the Berlengas is by boat, on one of the many tours that depart from Peniche. As far as we know, there are no boats leaving from other places and no other ways to visit the island.

Boats for the Berlengas depart from Peniche’s marina, and tickets can be purchased online or at the marina. There you will find several kiosks selling tours for the different boats. However, we advise you to buy online to guarantee a spot, especially if you are traveling in the summer or on the weekend.

Note that there is a daily control of the number of visitors to the island. Currently (2022), only 550 visitors can be on the island at the same time. To ensure compliance with this standard, the BerlengaPass .

Buy the Berlenga pass

Everyone visiting the Berlengas has to buy the BerlengaPass. It is not possible to enter the islands without doing so, as operators are not allowed to sell tickets without BerlengaPass. Unfortunately, there are no physical points of sale for BerlengaPass.

The BerlengaPass costs 3 Euros per person per day and can only be purchased online on this site . To buy the pass, we have to register on the site and enter a series of personal data (which we think is completely unnecessary). Then we have to actually enter information about the trip (day and number of people) and pay the price (3 Euros per person, per day). Payment can be made by credit card or transfer.

Honestly, the whole process is too complicated and time-consuming for something so simple. But if we want to travel to the Berlengas, we have to buy the BerlengaPass. One of the advantages of the pass is that it is enough for one person in a group to register and buy passes for the entire group.

Important tip: The control of entrances to the island is done through BerlengaPass. So, if you are planning to during the high season, it is important to buy the BerlengaPass in advance. There are more seats on the boats (over 700 in 2022) than the limit to enter the island (550).

The trip to the Berlengas

As we said at the beginning, the trip to the Berlengas is well known in Portugal due to the wind and strong waves, and there is no good way to avoid them – to go to the Berlengas, we have to take the boat trip.

However, it is not always windy and wavy. It’s relatively easy to see if it’s going to be a harsh trip or not; when it’s very windy, it’s very likely that the sea is choppy. You can also ask the operators – in our experience, they are honest and let you know if the trip is going to be more or less complicated.

The crossing to the Berlengas takes between 20 and 45 minutes, depending on the boat and sea conditions. Traveling on faster boats is usually more expensive, and the boat also undulates a lot more. In addition to possible seasickness, when there are very fast boats in difficult conditions, the trip ends up being very hard with the boat constantly hitting the waves.

The different tours to the Berlengas

There are almost 20 authorized operators for the Berlengas, so there is a wide variety of boats, timetables, prices, and even extra services. In addition to the trip itself, some operators also offer the possibility of visiting the caves, riding in a glass-bottom boat, kayaking, etc.

In our experience, and from what we have researched, the fastest boats make the trip in about 20 minutes when sea conditions are optimal. While the slower ones take about 45 minutes. Remember that slower boats also make the journey smoother.

Viamar – Cabo Avelar Pessoa has the biggest boat, but it is also slower, we know. The trip is quite time-consuming, but it is cheaper and more comfortable, even on windy days. Despite this, it does not prevent nausea. If you are prone to seasickness on boat trips, we strongly advise you to take a pill before the trip, whatever the boat.

Another of the most popular operators is Feeling Berlenga. We had the opportunity to do the trip with them a few years ago, and it was definitely fun. However, it was a calm day. On windier days, the journey can be very rough. Maybe even inadvisable for older people. See prices and more information. Or a tour with walking and going to the caves.

Berlengatour is perhaps a compromise between the two options above, as it uses a large catamaran with a capacity of 90 people. So it’s a big boat, but it’s also fast and makes the trip in about 30 minutes. The price is also much more expensive than Viamar. We’ve never done the trip on Berlengatour, so we don’t know how strenuous the trip is, but we imagine it won’t be as bad as on small boats. See prices and more information here.

How much does the trip to Berlengas cost

The cost of travel to the Berlengas varies depending on the operator, the time of travel, and the services included. So, slower boats tend to be cheaper, in August the tickets are more expensive, and if you want to do extra activities besides the trip, you will have to pay more (obviously).

The cheapest ticket we found was on Viamar, for 15 euros during the low season, during the week. Just for the trip, the cost usually varies between those 15 Euros and 30 Euros. With extras like snorkeling and a trip through the caves, it can reach around 50 Euros per person.

What to do in the Berlengas?

The Berlengas nature reserve is spectacular. Despite being small, the island has plenty of things to keep us entertained for numerous hours. We have a relatively short trail, the lighthouse, the fort, the beach, boat trips, and even the possibility of snorkeling and diving.

Berlenga Trail

The Berlenga trail is basically the only path on the island. It starts at the fishermen’s village and takes us to all the points of interest. To the north, it is a circular route of about 1km, always on dirt, and it gives us some fabulous views of the sea, Estelas, and Farilhões.

The northern section of the route is quite hard, with hard ascents and descents as they are on dirt. Here we also pass by bird nesting areas, which is quite interesting. Note that the seagulls are particularly aggressive at this time of year, sometimes, it may not even be possible to get past them as they are on the trail.

The southern section of the trail is also very hard, as it involves going up from sea level to the lighthouse and then going back down to the fort. The part between the fortress and the lighthouse has a lot of stairs which can be tricky for some people. In addition, it is possible to go on a dirt path to Ponta de França, and Cova do Sono, at the southern end of the island. The final part is on dirt, but it’s flat, so it’s quite easy.

In short, the whole route is not very long, but given the high slopes, it ends up being a bit challenging for some people. In any case, anyone who is used to walking regularly can visit the entire island easily. Anyone with physical and mobility problems will have problems due to the slopes.

Berlenga Beach

Carreiro do Mosteiro beach, or Berlenga Grande beach, is the only sandy beach in Berlenga. It’s not a big beach, and with the limitations due to the danger of landslides, it gets even smaller. However, it is a beautiful beach. The sand is very fine and pleasant, and the water has an almost unique color in mainland Portugal.

In high season it is expected to be completely full because it is really small. But this is a beach that is well worth visiting and diving. Note, however, the water is fairly cold. On the plus side, this beach is well protected from the wind due to its position on the island.

Fort of S. João Baptista

The São João Baptista fort is the best-known monument in the Berlengas and one of the best-known postcards of Portugal. Built during the 17th century, the Berlengas fort has an irregular heptagonal shape, being completely surrounded by the sea and only connected to land by a stone bridge.

Seen from the top of the island, the fort is a spectacular sight, with the turquoise sea, the bridge, and its medieval aspect. It is currently possible to visit the interior of the fort with a minimal payment of only 1 euro to the association of friends of the Berlengas, which manages and maintains it.

A few years ago, when we visited, it looked rather worn out, but now it looks much more renewed and better looking. The association has done an excellent job with the partial restoration, opening it to the public, and its adaptation to an inn.

Inside the fort, there is also a small bar, where you can buy snacks and drinks. Although we have never done so, it is possible to spend the night in the fort, but you will have to book in advance (see more information below)

Boat tour of the caves

One of the most popular activities in the Berlengas is taking a boat trip through the caves and islets around the island. These tours are usually sold as an extra service by the tour operators that make the crossing.

If you are interested in taking this tour, we strongly advise you to book it when purchasing your ticket to the island, so you can relax while having your trip fully planned. These tours cost 8-10 euros.

The cave tour is usually done on a small glass-bottom boat where you can appreciate the seabed, the caves, and all the phenomenal landscapes of the Berlengas reserve. Remember, this is primarily a marine reserve.

Snorkeling and Diving

If you want to observe the sea of Berlengas in a more active way, then snorkeling or diving are definitely activities to consider. The Berlengas reserve is considered one of the best places to snorkel in Portugal.

If you have the equipment, you can take it with you and go snorkeling at will, especially near the beach and the fort, where it is very easy to get into the water. But we have to advise you to be very careful about the sea currents. Don’t forget that we are on the high seas.

Those who prefer can also join one of the groups organized by the operators, where, in addition to the trip, there is snorkeling. In this case, the operators provide the necessary material.

Kayak and SUP

For the more adventurous, another way to explore the island is by Kayaking or Stand-up Paddle. Once again, some tour operators sell this service separately, but in the high season months, it is also possible to rent the equipment directly on the island.

If this is an activity that you really want to do, we advise you to book directly with an operator, as it is more certain. Again, pay close attention to wind and sea conditions on those days, as it may not be possible to do this with not-so-great weather .

When is the best time to go to the Berlengas?

The best time to go to the Berlengas is in the summer. During other periods it can be quite tough, or there may not exist an open operator at all.

However, during the summer we advise you to avoid going in August and on weekends as that is when there are more people. At these times, the capacity of 550 people is reached very quickly, which means that you may not be able to buy the Berlenga Pass to enter the day you want, or the experience may not be not as good as it could be.

The island is not so small that 550 visitors won’t fit in, but people end up concentrating near the beach and the fort, where the available space is not that much.

Is it possible to spend the night in the Berlengas?

Yes. It is possible to spend the night in the Berlengas, however, we have never done so and therefore we cannot speak about the quality of the accommodation. There are two possibilities for those who want to stay on the island, accommodation in the Fort and accommodation at the restaurant in the village.

In both cases, you will have to contact the accommodation directly, as none of them are on the online platforms that we usually recommend:

  • Fort – 60 Euros for a double room – e-mail for reservations: [email protected]
  • Restaurant – 130 Euros for a private room (+40 Euros for an extra bed) – [email protected]. Cellphone: +351 969 395 763
  • The existing campsite is deactivated (2022), and from the looks of it, it won’t be reactivated any time soon. For more information, contact the Peniche city hall .

Important note: If you want to spend the night on the island, don’t forget to buy the Berlenga Pass for two days.

Where to stay when you go to the Berlengas?

Although it is possible to spend the night in the Berlengas, the truth is that most people prefer to take a daily tour (which normally lasts between 4 to 6 hours, depending on the operator and the season). Thus, the usual thing is to stay and sleep in Peniche or in the surroundings.

Peniche is a very popular destination on the west coast due to the surf, the beaches, and the Berlengas, so it has lots of accommodation offers. Here are some options below:

  • Wot Peniche – The hostel offers shared and private rooms. It has an excellent atmosphere and amenities at very affordable prices. It is close to the Marina and the restaurant area, so it is perfect for those who go to the Berlengas. This was where we stayed the last time we went to the Berlengas, and it is a place we will return to. See more information here.
  • MH Peniche – It’s just outside the city. Probably too far to walk to the marina, it makes up for it by being close to the Cova da Alfarroba beach. It is a hotel with outstanding amenities, an indoor and outdoor pool, and very comfortable. Perfect for a romantic getaway or for families. See prices here.
  • Casa Vintage Guest House – is a good option for couples who want to stay in the city center, close to everything, including the marina and the Peniche fort. This is one of the cheapest accommodations and with good value for money. Check here.

The Berlengas Islands, Portugal - A day trip to Berlenga Grande

Jutting out of the Atlantic Ocean, 10km west of the fishing town of Peniche, are the craggy and windswept Berlengas Islands.

The islands may appear barren and inhospitable, but the nutrient-rich sea waters and sheltered cliffs are teeming with marine and birdlife. This diverse and thriving ecosystem is protected by the Reserva Natural da Berlengas.

Berlenga Grande harbour

The sheltered harbour and windswept landscape of Berlenga Grande

The Berlengas Islands are frequently savaged by powerful storms, and historically the rocky islands were notorious for shipwrecks. A 16th-century monastery was even constructed on the largest island, Berlenga Grande, to rescue shipwrecked sailors, but was soon abandoned due to pirate raids.

Later the São João Baptista Fort was built to guard the Portuguese seas, and today this fort is regarded as one of the most scenic forts in all of Portugal. This combination of history, dramatic natural scenery and extensive wildlife, makes the Berlengas Islands a fascinating and popular tourist destination. Related articles: Peniche tourist guide

The Berlengas Islands for tourists

As a tourist, it is possible to visit the largest of the Berlengas Islands, Berlenga Grande, as a day trip from Peniche.

A typical day trip to Berlenga Grande includes a boat tour of the cliff formations, a visit to the São João Baptista fort, a hike through the island's interior, bird watching, snorkelling, and opportunities for relaxing on the beach. Departing from the harbour in Berlenga Grande are glass-bottomed boat tours, which explore the caves, grottos, and view the extensive marine life.

The ferry ride from Peniche to Berlenga Grande is also very scenic, as the route follows the craggy Peniche coastline, and passes the Cape Carvoeiro headland and the Nau dos Corvos rock formation.

The day trip to Berlenga Grande is considered as one of the highlights of the Peniche region, and should be visited if you get the opportunity. Warning: The Berlengas Islands are exposed to the huge waves of the Atlantic Ocean; this is not a day trip for you if you are susceptible to seasickness.

Below is an interactive map for a typical day trip to Berlenga Grande. The yellow route shows the common tourist trail (3.8km) which begins at the harbour, visits the São João Baptista Fort, the Cova do Sono viewpoint, the lighthouse and the Praia do Carreiro do Mosteiro beach. The green line is the Ilha Velha footpath (1.4km), which hikes around the much quiet northern side of the island. The blue line is the route of the small boat tours and the blue pins mark the prominent coastal features.

Key to Yellow tour: 1) Harbour 2) Forte de São João Baptista 3) Old Cisterns 4) Cova do Sono Viewpoint 5) Lighthouse 6) The Fishing village 7) Carreiro do Mosteiro beach Boat tour 1) Greta da Inês rocks 2) Búzios grotto 3) Blue cave 4) Whale rock 5) Furado Grande (65m long natural tunnel) 6) Elephant Rock 7) Cova do Sono 8) Ponta da França headland.

There is a restaurant on the island (the Mar and Sol), but it is always advisable to bring your own water and food, as can get busy in the peak months. Berlenga Grande is part of the Arquipélago das Berlengas Nature Reserve, so visitors are encouraged to only follow the set paths, and not cause damage by wandering into the protected areas.

A day trip to Berlenga Grande is only suitable for physically fit and mobile visitors, as some of the footpaths are very worn and there are lots of hills to climb.

Travel to the Berlengas Islands

All of the ferries to the Berlengas Islands depart from Peniche harbour, and along the harbour walkway are the ticket offices for all of the tour companies. A standard ferry journey takes 45 minutes, and a return ticket costs €20 (€12 for one way). The more exciting and faster speedboat costs €23 for a return, with the journey time is reduced to just 20 minutes. Berlenga Grande is the only island with a sheltered harbour and allows visitors.

Top Tip: When departing from Peniche, sit on the right side of the boat, as this side faces the dramatic cliffs of the Peniche headland

There are multiple tour companies with regular boat services to Berlenga Grande, and a selection of the companies include: https://viamar-berlenga.com/en/tickets/ http://www.feelingberlenga.pt/en/ https://julius-berlenga.com.pt/viagem/ (links open new tabs) During the summer, always book tickets in advance or early in the day, as the trips are very popular and there is a limited number of seats on the boats. In the autumn and spring, there can be frequent cancellations due to the weather, and in the winter many tour companies close for the entire season.

The São João Baptista Fort

The São João Baptista Fort lies on the sheltered side of the Berlenga Grande and was constructed in the 17th century to prevent a staging area for seaborne assault along the western coastline of Portugal.

This little fort is one of the most visually striking buildings in Portugal, rising up from the shallow turquoise sea waters and connected to the island by narrow arched bridges.

The defensive prowess of this tranquil setting was most demonstrated in June 1666, when just twenty soldiers withstood a siege of 16 Spanish warships and over 2,000 men. The fort was only abandoned when its stock of ammunition was exhausted, but the attack cost the lives of 500 Spanish sailors compared to just one Portuguese soldier.

Today, the historic fort has been transformed into a hostel and is open to the public to explore. As one of the most atmospheric locations to stay in Portugal, it is an absolute bargain at €22/€20 (high/low season) per night; just don’t expect too many modern comforts.

Tourists note: So many pictures of the São João Baptista fort on the internet have been extremely enhanced, to such a stage that they are almost fake. Please do not be disappointed if the bright orange fort surrounded by turquoise waters is not what is found......

Berlengas Lighthouse (Farol Duque de Bragança)

Standing at the highest point of the island is the Farol Duque de Bragança, the Duke of Braganza lighthouse.

The light emitted from the 120m-high vantage point can be seen from more than 50km away, an impressive feat considering that the structure only uses solar power and batteries.

The lighthouse originates from the 19th century, but the complex is not open to the public.

The Farol Duque de Bragança - completely solar-powered!

The Praia do Carreiro do Mosteiro beach

The Praia do Carreiro do Mosteiro is the only beach on the island that is accessible and safe to swim from. The small beach is situated in a beautiful setting, nestled between two steep cliffs and offering views of the picturesque harbour.

The sea waters at the beach are crystal clear and perfect for snorkelling, although they can be surprisingly chilly. For the more adventurous kayaks can also be hired from the harbour to explore the island in more detail.

Praia da Berlenga

The Praia da Berlenga beach is a great location for snorkelling

The beach itself is named after the 16th-century monastery, which was situated above the harbour and has now been converted into a restaurant. The stones from the abandoned monastery were used to construct the São João Baptista Fort.

Glass-bottomed boat cave tours

Small tour boats provide tours of the island, and explore the cliff formations which can not be viewed from the land or accessed by the larger ferries.

The tours cost €6.00 for a 30-minute tour and visit the blue cave, Furado Grande (a natural tunnel), Elephant Rock and the Ponta da França headland.

Pedra do Elefante elephant Berlengas Islands

Elephant Rock - If you squint, you can just about see that it is an Elephant.....

On the island there is a very basic campsite managed by Peniche local council. Either side of the summer months it is very tranquil and relaxing but in the summer it is popular with overly excited Portuguese teenagers.

The limited facilities on the island means it is advisable to bring all of your supplies. To make a reservation email: [email protected]

the Berlengas Islands: The Best Guide to Planning a Trip

' src=

Looking for the perfect half-day trip or a slower-paced day trip? T he Berlengas Islands welcome you with activities and sights throughout the year. No matter when you go, it’s important to plan ahead when visiting this famous destination.

Your first step is to determine how long you’ll be on the island; depending on the time of year, hours of availability and activity options may vary. If you’re visiting during the off-season (not summer), a half-day trip from Lisbon is a way to go, but if you’re ready for adventure in the sun, a full day in summer might be better for you.

Want to visit the Berlengas Islands?

Spend a day on Berlenga Grande, a scenic island in the Berlengas Nature Reserve, on this Berlenga Island Small-Group Day Trip from Lisbon that has over 100 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ reviews.

Keep in mind that although the B erlengas Islands include 3 separate islands and 985 hectares of marine reserve , only one island allows visitors.

The other islands are restricted to scientists associated with nature reserves. The main island, Grande Berlenga, only allows 350 visitors per day, as it’s only 1.5 km in size, so it is best to grab your tickets in advance rather than relying on same-day availability.

Berlengas Islands Fun Facts

  • The main island is about 10km off the coast of Peniche , and the second island is 10 km behind it , though due to its height, it looks closer.
  • Berlenga Lighthouse was placed at the highest peak of the mountain so that ships would not run into it while trying to reac h Peniche or Nazaré, and people still work in the Lighthouse to this day.
  • Lighthouse workers work in weekly increments, working during the night and living in isolation.
  • Previous residents of the Berlegnas islands include monks, pirates, and fishermen.

You will be told what time each event will take place, where to go, and what time your boat will be going back to the mainland.

Make sure to note this order and the times the activities will be occurring. But if you do not remember, they should write this down in a way that, if you forget or have questions, you can ask any guide for assistance.

Getting to Berlengas On Your Own

To visit the Peniche Berlengas Islands on your own, you need to first head to Peniche. Once in Peniche, the next step is to take a boat to Berlenga Grande, the main island of the Berlengas archipelago.

The cost of the Berlengas boat trip varies depending on the operator, travel time, and any additional services like cave tours or snorkeling. Basic round-trip fares can range from around 15 to 30 Euros, with additional activities costing extra.

🌟 A quick tip: The speedboat is only a few euros more and totally worth it to save time (30 vs. 60 minutes).

How to get to Berlengas from Lisbon?

To get to the Berlengas Islands from Lisbon, you have two options: going by yourself or booking a tour.

🚤 Going by Yourself : Drive or take public transport to Peniche, which is about 100 km (62 mi) from Lisbon. From Peniche, catch a boat to the Berlengas Islands. The boat trip can take between 20 to 45 minutes, depending on the conditions and boat type.

💻 Booking a Tour : Various companies offer organized tours from Lisbon to the Berlengas Islands. These tours typically include transportation from Lisbon to Peniche and a boat trip to the islands. Some tours might also include guided activities like cave tours, snorkeling, or kayaking.

Berlengas Islands Activities

Start off your activity planning by figuring out what packages are included with your transportation. It’s convenient only having to book once rather than spend time on the island trying to reserve a spot somewhere. Keep in mind that while there will be plenty of water activities offered, the island is located off the Atlantic coast. The water will be very cold, so don’t count on having a traditional island beach day.

Ready for some adventure in the Berlengas Islands? Outside of the pre-planned packages you can find, there’s plenty to explore on your own time.

Berlengas Islands Day Trip

Go to Forte de São João Baptista

Head on over to the Fort of São João Baptista das Berlengas, simply known as the Fort of the Berlengas, by walking up the hill from the docks. This stroll allows you to view both sides of the island as well as its native flora and fauna. The informational signs along the path provide helpful context to your surrounding environment, and you’ll find yourself referencing the facts throughout the day as you come across new things.

About halfway through the trail, you’ll notice a lighthouse; although you can’t go inside, take a minute to stop and read about its unique history. To protect the island’s ecosystem, stay on the designated path (rangers will remind you as well).

Go on a walking tour

With this activity, you have the choice to take this adventure on your own or with a tour guide , depending on the company you choose to book your trip with. There are pros and cons to both options. The guides will share the information that is posted on the signs along the trail in more detai l, as well as add additional details and stories about the island. It’s important to keep in mind that when booking these tours with travel companies, you might have to have patience with logistics.

berlenga tours

Each of the walking tours is divided by what language you prefer the tour to be given in, and this can take some time to divide based on group sizes, the number of people who speak certain languages, and how many tour guides can speak those languages. This can feel disorganized, but it will only take a couple of minutes for them to figure out.

You also will not know the order of events until you arrive on the island. If your walking tour is the first thing on your agenda, you will start your walk at the dock and walk over the hill to the fort . If this is not the first thing on your agenda, then you might start from the opposite direction. If you don’t mind the extra five minutes of logistical planning at the beginning of your trip, consider booking a walking tour to get that personal touch.

Make sure to pack a couple of euros in your bag since you will have to pay a euro or two to enter the fortress .

🥾 Hiking the Ilha Velha Trial

The Ilha Velha trail on Berlenga Grande features distinctive pink granite rocks. The area, known for its unique wildlife and plants, includes a special pink-flowered plant called Berlengas’ thrift, native only to this region. The trail also has a local lizard species, the Carbonell wall lizard. The vegetation is limited to grasses and shrubs due to strong winds and poor soil.

Visitors should stay on the path to protect the delicate environment and are reminded not to pick any plants.

Catch Some Sun on the Beach

Want to get some sun? Enjoy a short walk down to the beach, where you can put your towel in the sand and jump into the Atlantic ocean ( if you’re brave enough for the cold! ) Make your way to a cave entrance by the bridge that crosses the docks to the beach—you can get there by swimming or walking.

berlenga tours

Explore the ocean with your snorkel, mask, and fins (rentable through various tour companies if you don’t already have them) . Find the best spots to snorkel by entering near the fortress and swimming around the cliffs.

Take a Boat Tour

Want to take your adventure further? Many companies offer tour packages with the possibility of adding a boat ride in the Berlengas islands.

These boat rides allow you to experience the world-famous elephant rock during a cave tour. Your tour will either start at the main dock or at the bottom of the steps near the fortress. The entire tour lasts approximately 10-15 minutes. During this time, your tour guide will take you to the other side of the fortress to a gorgeous cave the boat can drive through and back around the elephant rock. It is a pretty fast tour, but the views are incredible, and there would be no other way to experience it.

You can also opt to go dolphin watching. Although offered all year round, this activity is best for trips between June to September, as this will give you the best chance of seeing them. The tour guide will take you out on a boat tour around the Berlengas islands in order to observe the dolphins in their favorite spots .

Last but not least, you can hire a private boat to either take you around the Berlenga Portugal island and surrounding areas that are not restricted, or you can do a fishing tour with a guide.

berlenga tours

Go Scuba Diving

If you are feeling extra adventurous, some companies also offer scuba diving tours. With this activity, you should be given a wetsuit and scuba diving equipment.

The Natural Reserve of the Berlengas Islands is a unique spot due to the transparency of the turquoise waters and the high concentration of different species. It is a marine reserve also nominated as a “Biosphere Reserve” by the European Council, and since 2011, it is protected as “World Biosphere Reserve” by UNESCO.

⭐️ Please note that there might be other activities offered in the Berlengas islands is seasonally, so make sure to check out multiple options regarding activity packages depending on when you plan on visiting.

What do you wear to Berlengas?

Don’t ignore the travel companies’ advice about packing a jacke t. The rideover, especially in the morning, can be both chilly and rainy.

But don’t worry, the island warms up quickly as the day goes on. Other must-haves on the boat include motion sickness pills if you know your stomach won’t appreciate a bumpy ride.

Obviously, other things you should wear include sun protection, as well as swimming essentials like a quick-drying towel and a swimsuit.

Food and drinks

There are not a ton of options for buying food and drinks on the island . Some websites say there is a small supermarket on the island, but you shouldn’t rely on it being open. There is also o ne restaurant near the main dock of the island as well if you do not feel like bringing lunch. But be warned that the restaurant can be closed, especially during the low season.

berlenga tours

Bring your own food and drinks. Peniche has a rather large supermarket close to the docks. At the supermarket, you can get items for sandwiches, fruit, chips, and drinks easily for under 15 euros . If you do decide to have a picnic on the island, I would suggest the small cave by the beach. If you walk towards the beach, you’ll notice a small bridge about halfway down the path. If you take a right off the path before you cross the bridge, you’ll notice a small cave that you can sit in and have a picnic out of the sun.

Should I go to the Berlengas Islands?

Is Berlengas worth it? Overall, if you happen to be in Portugal for 5 or more days, going to the Berlanga Portugal islands is worth the quick day trip . It can feel a little touristy, but it’s worth seeing.

Make sure you take lots of photos and do some research about the activities you are interested in. Finally, If you head over to the Berlengas, make sure to also stop at the medieval town of Óbidos , one of the most picturesque and well-preserved in Portugal. Óbidos is located about 80 kilometers (50 miles) north of Lisbon in Central Portugal and has a wonderful array of attractions in a very small footprint.

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.

Go beneath the streets on this tour of the spectacular, mind-bending Moscow Metro! Be awed by architecture and spot the Propaganda , then hear soviet stories from a local in the know. Finish it all up above ground, looking up to Stalins skyscrapers, and get the inside scoop on whats gone on behind those walls.

Know More about this tour

We begin our Moscow tour beneath the city, exploring the underground palace of the Moscow Metro. From the Square of Revolution station, famous for its huge statues of soviet people (an armed soldier, a farmer with a rooster, a warrior, and more), we’ll move onto some of the most significant stations, where impressive mosaics, columns, and chandeliers will boggle your eyes! Moreover, these stations reveal a big part of soviet reality — the walls depict plenty of Propaganda , with party leaders looking down from images on the walls. Your local guide will share personal stories of his/her family from USSR times, giving you insight into Russia’s complicated past and present. Then we’re coming back up to street level, where we’ll take a break and refuel with some Russian fast food: traditional pancakes, called bliny. And then, stomachs satiated, we are ready to move forward! We’ll take the eco-friendly electric trolleybus, with a route along the Moscow Garden Ring. Used mainly by Russian babushkas(grannies) during the day, the trolleybus hits peak hours in the mornings and evenings, when many locals use it going to and from their days. Our first stop will be the Aviator’s House, one of Stalin’s Seven Sisters, followed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs — and you’ll hear the legends of what has gone on inside the walls. Throughout your Moscow tour, you’ll learn curious facts from soviet history while seeing how Russia exists now, 25 years after the USSR.
