cycling tour bali

Are you looking for the best cycling tour in Bali? Then you’ve come to the right place.

How do I know that this is the best cycling tour ? Well, I’ve been traveling in Bali for 14 years, done 5 different cycling tours, and talked to other people about their cycling experiences.

So if you’re on the hunt for a fun way to explore the lush backroads of Ubud and north Bali, a cycling tour is just the thing for you. In my eyes, it is a must on any Bali itinerary and one of my favorite things I’ve ever done on the island.

Article overview

Choosing the right company

🌟 my top picks, e-bike option, best time to go cycling in bali, breakfast in kintamani, coffee plantation visit, the cycling part of the tour, the rice fields, a balinese feast for lunch, skill level needed, what to pack for a cycling tour in bali, what are the best cycling routes in bali, are there any recommended cycling tours in bali, what is the cost of a cycling tour in bali, is bali a bike-friendly destination, can you cycle in canggu, book a bali cycling tour, remember to pin for later 😉, best cycling tours in bali.

Many years ago, I decided I wanted to do a cycling tour in Bali because I love to explore the non-touristy areas to truly get to know the island and its people. Joining a guided tour is a good idea because you don’t have to even think about the common scams in Bali .

I also think that riding a bike gets you so much closer to your surroundings and more often than not in Bali, the most beautiful places aren’t accessible by car.

There are many cycling tour companies to choose from in Bali, and lots of different things to think about like route difficulty, group size, safety and price.

So I did a lot of research and read quite a few reviews before deciding to book with Jegeg Bali Cycling . Mostly because of their promise of small groups, lunch in their family compound and a very affordable price.

I have since done 3 other cycling tours that did not come close to the standard of Jegeg. Why did I not just stick with Jegeg you might wonder? Because what kind of travel blogger would I be if I did not try out different options for you guys?

However, very recently I joined my fifth cycling tour in Bali , this time with Love Bali Bike Tours, and I absolutely loved it!

So while this article talks about my cycling tour with Jegeg, I wanted to also give you a great option to book through Viator which offers free cancellation and a reserve now pay later option. The two tours are fairly similar, hands down two of the best days I’ve ever had in Bali.

While both tours above are very easy, even if you’re not in the best shape, you also have the option to choose an e-bike tour. This half-day e-bike tour of Ubud is one of the most popular cycling tours in Bali. It also includes pick-up and drop-off at your Ubud hotel, a stop at Tegalalang Rice Terraces and a tasty Balinese lunch.

Since you’re on an e-bike, the duration of the tour is a little shorter, only 3-4 hours. The perfect choice if you’re limited on time!

The best time to join a cycling tour in Bali is during the dry season, which runs from May to September. During this time, the weather is warm and sunny, with little to no rainfall, making it perfect for outdoor activities like cycling.

While you can cycle in Bali all year round, the rainy season, which runs from October to March, can make it a bit more challenging. Heavy rainfall can lead to flooding and muddy roads, which can make cycling difficult and even dangerous.

It’s worth noting that Bali can get quite busy during the peak tourist season, which runs from June to August (and during Christmas). This means that roads can get congested, particularly in popular tourist areas like Canggu, Ubud and Seminyak.

If you’re looking for a quieter time to cycle, consider visiting during the shoulder seasons of February-April (which is normally when I would advise you to visit Bali) and September-October. During these months, the weather is still great for cycling, though sometimes a little humid, but there are fewer crowds.

Bali cycling tour itinerary

Our English-speaking guide Putu and his uncle picked us up bright and early at 7:45 am from our homestay in Ubud. (By the way, we spent 4 days in Ubud this time and it was the perfect amount of time to experience all the highlights, including a day trip.)

Putu was smiling from ear to ear and he seemed genuinely excited to show us around and explain all the different places we drove by. Such a good start to the day.

Early morning view of Lake Batur during the first part of our cycling tour in Bali

After picking up the two others joining us for the day we went by car to Kintamani where we had breakfast overlooking the spectacular volcanic caldera of Mt. Batur with its deep crater lake. We got to choose between 5 dishes and I went for the pancakes after several weeks of Mie Goreng and Nasi Goreng.

The bright morning light made it hard to photograph the stunning view, but I guess you can see. Munching on some tasty pancakes to this view was such a great start to the day. It gets a bit chilly so high up in the mountains so be sure to bring a light jacket or cardigan if you tend to get cold.

(I just checked the Jegeg website and it doesn’t look like breakfast is included in the tour anymore. Instead, you will get to experience the beautiful Tegalalang Rice Terraces , perfect if you’re limited on time in Bali. Love Bali Bike Tours includes both Tegalalang and breakfast in Kintamani.)

Toasting coffee beans on a plantation in the Kintamani Region during our cycling tour in Bali

Our next stop was a coffee plantation located a bit further down the mountain. We walked through the magnificent hillside plantation and learned about the history, development and how coffee is made from start to finish. Ulrik even got to roast some coffee beans of his own.

Then it was time to do some tasting. As I’m not a warm beverage drinker (excessive sweater here) I only sipped on the teas after they had cooled down a bit. And boy were they delicious, especially the lemongrass one. I wish I could have had it with ice though.

Towards the end of the plantation tour, we were encouraged to have a look in their gift shop. As I like to buy things during my travels that I can actually use or even better, eat/drink, I picked up a bag of lemongrass tea powder.

I recommend you use the facilities as this is the last toilet you’ll see until the end of the tour.

12 different tea and coffee tasting options seen from above, the second stop on our cycling tour in Bali.

Next on the agenda was the actual cycling part of the day. We drove back down from the mountain to a grass field where a sea of bikes was lined up. Be sure to get a helmet and bike you feel comfortable on to fully be able to enjoy the 3-hour bike ride. Putu took his time and made sure all four of us were ready to go before he gave us a bottle of water and off we went.

We biked down picturesque palm tree-lined lanes, through traditional villages, past smiling people and more colorful temples than my eager photo-snapping self could handle. After a while, we stopped in a small town square where Putu talked about the Balinese culture, their many different ceremonies and other important traditions. I found it super interesting and asked probably a few too many questions.

The next stop was not as appealing to me and you might understand why if you take a look at the next two photos. Yes, that’s right, we stopped at a large spider web with hundreds of spiders!!! One guy thought it was fun and let one of the huge spiders walk on his arm, and Putu put one on his face. Yikes!

A smiling cycling tour guide wearing a blue shirt and white helmet with a large black and white spider on his cheek.

Another fun experience was when we stopped at a rice field and Putu told us the entire process of growing rice. I don’t want to sound ignorant but I did not know growing rice was such a lengthy process.

At first, I felt a bit uncomfortable because I wouldn’t want some foreigners to stand around staring at me while I was working hard. But Putu assured us that it was okay and after a while, the ladies even encouraged us to take pictures.

They explained that most of the workers you see in the rice fields don’t get paid but work for four months to get a cut of the rice they harvest. That’s why you won’t see many young people in the rice fields anymore. Since Bali has skyrocketed in popularity, more profitable jobs are available so the young generation doesn’t want to do such hard manual labor for almost no reward.

After this experience, I will never take a grain of rice for granted again.

A women in a straw hat and flower pants working har harvesting rice in the fields of Bali.

After three hours of exploring Ubud’s backcountry, we finished the cycling tour at Putu’s family home. Getting to come inside their compound to enjoy a traditional Balinese meal was the best part of the whole day.

Putu’s mother and aunts really went all out and served over 10 mouthwatering dishes. We all looked at each other and said at the same time: this is one of the best meals I’ve ever had! I wish I could come back again just for the food. Yum!

I thought I already was quite knowledgeable about Balinese culture, but we learned so much from Putu and his family. Like the tooth-filing ceremony which marks the transition from childhood to adulthood.

I first thought he was kidding and was shocked to learn that most Balinese people actually get their front teeth (canines and incisors) filed down to smooth away the savage aspects of the soul.

A review of Jegeg Bike Tour in Ubud - The best Bali experience

Just before we were about to leave, we received a gift. A beautiful shirt made in the neighboring village. I was surprised that after an amazing day and the most delicious meal, they wanted to give us even more.

Putu explained that since they earned a lot of money from us, they wanted to pay it forward to their neighbors and then give something back to us as a thank-you for choosing them. Gotta love the Balinese people.

I can’t possibly see how the day could have turned out any better!

Bali cycling tour safety

We felt safe the whole time as Putu’s uncle would drive ahead and stop traffic for us if necessary. So if something were to happen to one of us or we couldn’t finish the tour, I’m sure we could just catch a ride back with him.

I felt equally as safe on both tours I mentioned earlier. During the cycling tour with Love Bali Bike Tours , one of the other attendees slipped and fell over the bike while standing completely still during a water break. She only got a few abrasions on her knee and elbow, but within a few minutes, the owner of the company was there and drove her straight to a clinic to get the wounds cleaned.

Don’t worry, you will be able to complete the cycling tour even if you’re not in the best shape. The route is mostly downhill apart from a couple of small hills towards the end. You can get off the bike and walk up if you want to, everyone will stop for a water and banana break after the last hill.

I was a little worried beforehand since I hadn’t ridden a bike in almost 10 years. But it was not a problem at all.

When preparing for a cycling tour in Bali, it’s important to pack the right gear to ensure a comfortable experience. You don’t need much, I packed just a few things in a small, lightweight backpack because I wanted my cameras with me at all times. You also have the option to leave your stuff in the car that follows you during the tour.

  • Small lightweight backpack : If you want to bring something with you during the cycling part of the tour.
  • Comfortable clothing : Lightweight and breathable clothing is ideal for a cycling tour in Bali. It does get very hot and humid, so you don’t want to wear anything too tight. Just keep in mind that you are visiting local villages, so don’t wear hot pants and a bikini top. The Balinese have gotten used to a lot over the years, but they are still modest people, so be respectful. Check out my article about what not to do in Bali .
  • Sun Protection : Bali is known for its sunny weather, so it’s important to protect your skin from harmful UV rays when you’re spending a full day in the sun. I always pack high-SPF sunscreen , sunglasses, and a hat to keep me protected from the sun.
  • Water Bottle : Staying hydrated is crucial on a cycling tour, especially in the hot and humid Bali weather. You will get a complimentary bottle of water, but I recommend bringing your own reusable bottle . There’s a huge plastic waste issue in Bali, so please don’t add to it. There are so many restaurants and hotels offering free refills these days and you can also get a filtered water bottle .
  • Camera : Don’t forget your camera. I brought my Olympus om-d e-m5 and my GoPro and used both throughout the whole day.

My favorite filtered water bottle for travel, backpacking, hiking. LifeStraw Go Water Filter Bottle.

🌟 LifeStraw Go Water Filter Bottle

Frequently Asked Questions

Bali offers many cycling routes that cater to different levels of difficulty and scenic views. Some of the popular routes include Kintamani to Ubud, Jatiluwih Rice Terrace , and Mount Batur Sunrise. Each route offers a unique experience that will leave you in awe of Bali’s natural beauty.

Yes, there are many cycling tour operators in Bali that offer guided tours with experienced guides. The two operators I recommend are Jegeg Bali Cycling and Love Bali Bike Tours . These operators provide quality bikes, safety equipment, and knowledgeable guides.

The cost of a cycling tour in Bali varies depending on the tour operator, the duration of the tour, and the route. On average, a half-day cycling tour costs between $30-$50.

Yes and no, I would not say that Bali is generally a bike-friendly destination. The roads are often narrow and chaotic, so it’s essential to cycle with caution. If you’re a cycling enthusiast you can make your way out of the tourist hubs and find calmer roads up northwest and northeast. However, you rarely see someone ride a bicycle to get around. I have once or twice in Ubud, but most people rent motorbikes. On Nusa Lembongan , however, I’m more likely to rent a bicycle.

Yes, you can rent a bike in a few places and cycle in Canggu, which is a popular surfing and beach destination. However, it’s important to note that Canggu’s roads are often very busy, so be careful.

Final thoughts: Best cycling tour in Bali

I can’t stress enough how much I think you should include a cycling tour in your Bali Bucket List . Whenever I show people around Bali we always do a cycling tour and I have yet to find someone who didn’t enjoy it. It’s a great way to get away from the busy tourist hubs and experience the real Bali.

Wished I did a cycling tour on my previous trip to Ubud but my friend can’t ride a bicycle so we skipped! Definitely saving this for next time. The spider on that guy’s face, omg! One thing that really scares me about Bali has got to be all the creepy-crawlies, lol!

Happy to hear that Kristine! Haha, it scared me at first too. But I have been to Bali eight times now and I have only seen spiders about three times. So not too bad 😉

Escape the hustle and join us to discover the magic of rural Bali on our famous full day Bali Eco Educational Cycling Tour, suitable for all ages.

“This is not just the best tour in Bali, it’s the best tour we’ve ever been on. The guides were friendly, fun and informative, the scenery fantastic, we learnt so much about the Balinese culture and lunch was something special. Highly recommend this tour for all visitors to Bali”…..Tim and Karen Phillips, Ontario, Canada.

The original and authentic eco/educational cycling tour, (many try to copy us, claim to be us and use our text) this tour was designed to take the visitor to Bali away from the tourist areas and show them the Bali they want to see – ‘the real Bali’ and to learn about the Balinese culture in the process and that’s what we have been doing for the past nine years. This tour is now promoted in every guide book on Bali/Indonesia (the Lonely Planet Guide Books on Bali, Indonesia and Best of Bali, The Rough Guide Book to Bali, The Natural Guide to Bali and numerous French, German and Dutch guide books) has been consistently voted the best tour in Bali and a must for every visitor.

For guests who are confident on bicycles and want more of an adventure, we offer two alternatives: the full day East Bali Adventure program and the half day Ubud Eco Cycling & massage (available for sunrise cycling, morning/after breakfast, and afternoon/after lunch). As the terrain is more challenging, for this tour we only accept bookings for guests aged 13 to 55. Inquire about joining this program via email at [email protected] or check out our booking calendar by following the links below to see what tours are already running.

Our daily Bali Eco Cycling program is very popular with families, we have even hosted four generations of one family on this tour. Your safety is our priority, with Australian-standard safety equipment for baby seats.

batur

A short drive after breakfast and we’re off on our mountain bikes through the heartland of Bali, travelling downhill on non tourist, secret back roads and minor village roads (with little traffic), experiencing typical Balinese daily life and enjoying the beautiful Balinese countryside to Ubud. We ride through lush forested areas, plantations full of Balinese staples and cash crops (cloves, coffee, cocoa, vanilla, tapioca, taro, local vegetables and exotic tropical fruits), through timeless small villages and lush rice paddy panoramas. And throngs of adorable Balinese children will be there calling out ‘hellos’ and wanting ‘high fives’ on the way down. If we chance upon a ceremony (and we often do) you will be invited to witness the events and our guides will offer explanations.

We show you a Bali other visitors never see and our experienced guides explain this amazing culture and the relationship the Balinese have with their beautiful island.

We have numerous stops on the way, including a visit to a Balinese home/compound, (where you get to see first hand how the Balinese live outside the tourist areas), a Balinese plantation (where you learn of the medicinal and culturally important uses of local plants, the process of making coffee and see many of the spices you have used in cooking and tropical fruits growing in their natural environment. We also get to sample many exotic tropical fruits, local herbal teas and coffees, including Coffee Luwak, the unusually produced and most expensive coffee in the world). We also stop off at a village temple, an enormous Banyan tree and stunning rice paddy panoramas. We go for a short walk in the rice paddies to see villagers planting and harvesting rice (you can join in) and see traditional craftsmen at work en route.

eco cycling tour

For athletic guests who want a cycling workout, we offer an optional 6 to 8km extra flat and uphill riding towards the end of the tour.

Lunch, served in our restaurant, set in the serene surrounds of rice paddies, is a delectable Balinese feast, including the smoked duck/chicken the guide books rave about (Many guests describe our lunch as the best meal they have had in Bali) . We also cater for vegetarians and can accommodate children with special meals.

A Balinese family concern with Western family ties, we are the only company that can proudly offer western standards of safety, hygiene and sanitation. And those standards are the norm. Our groups are kept at a size of 8 or 10 (unless requests for a larger group) and we have a senior leading guide and a secondary guide at the rear of the group (unlike other tours). Our car also follows us down the mountain in case anyone is not feeling well.

After lunch you have an optional visit to the Ubud Monkey Forest and temple complex.

We are rather flexible with our tour and if you want less information and more riding we can accommodate you as well.

This tour is a full day tour (though, we can cater for time requirements) and we like to describe it as not just an adventure, but a cultural, ecological, learning and culinary experience! We promise you won’t be disappointed! Tour Includes:

All-inclusive tour rates vary by season and availability, see our booking calendar for the most up-to-date rates.

WE LOVE CHILDREN. Infant car seats are also available for use. As our car seats are limited, infants occupying child car seats will be charged at the price of a child.

Our team are happy to arrange to drop you off somewhere else to save you the cost of a hotel transfer. Just ask us when booking, if it's on the route we wouldn't charge you extra. If it means a detour or require a separate vehicle to be timely, we may add a small charge. The best value in Bali by far!! Pick up time will be advised and we pick up from Ubud, Nusa Dua, Sanur, Kuta, Legian, Seminyak. We like to give you service, and hope you find that it means value for money and an experience you won't forget.

Day 1: Meet in Ubud, Northern ride Kintamani to Ubud

Gather and meet at the hotel lobby for an hour transfer   out into Ubud's countryside for the morning where a relaxing meandering loop beside idyllic rice paddies, a village specialist in Orange, and the lush resplendent greenery are awaiting us.   While going to your Ubud base observe the charms of rural Balinese life. We’ll stop mid-morning for some refreshing local coffee, and there’s a chance to sample some local coconuts too. While biking  along narrow backroads, the Balinese tend to greet you warmly. Most villages have a sacred temple, and you’ll usually catch a glimpse of a ceremony or two. Our friendly guide will help explain the significance of the daily offerings that villagers lay out.

Enjoy your first lunch with the Balinese cuisine - Nasi Campur. The   view of the rice fields gives an excellent opportunity to spot the native birds of the area. Continue riding toward your hotel for check-in. End the day with another tantalizing feast at a lo cal restaurant to celebrate the first day’s riding .

After lunch, we roll a few more km down to the beach where a cold drink is awaited before a short transfer to the hotel.

On arrival at the hotel, get set up in your room and enjoy the rest of the day at leisure.

Day 4: Manggis Trail Hike

Today is dedicated to Kaura community. Prepare your comfiest walking shoes and embark on a 4-hour (3 km) trekking trip to Jagasatru Waterfall. After a short transfer from the hotel to Kaura community for a walk through lush forests and weaving through clusters of homes where bantam chickens forage and children play. The waterfall is a stunning site and the pool formed at its base is a great spot to cool off after the walk. Sitting next to a giant statue of Brahama, the waterfall is a spiritual place for local Balinese. This is a great way to stretch the legs, get the heart pumping, and get well off the beaten path with experienced hiking guides from the Manggis community. Then, we will proceed to a water purification ceremony with the holy water of the waterfall site. These traditional rituals are performed to cleanse, purify, and bless the water, and usually include incense, flowers, and candles. The guide will help explain the symbolism.

After a rewarding lunch , the choice is yours to continue the afternoon with a 2-hour village community walk guided by the village ambassador. You will be able to engage with the community thanks to their local coconut oil production, the goats that have become an iconic asset, and to understand how a rural Balinese village is. Or to jump into the van for a quick transfer to your hotel for an afternoon at leisure by the swimming pool or the beach.

Day 5: Cycle Manggis to the Northeast Coast

The day begins with a transfer to negotiate the hilliest areas around Manggis before hopping on the e-bikes and heading for Tulamben coast.

Cycle along winding palm-fringed countryside roads and pass charming villages to get to the iconic Tirta Gangga water palace. Tirta Gangga is a former royal palace in eastern Bali, notable for its reflective bathing pools and wonderfully ornate stone carvings. Learn about the site’s rich heritage before pressing on to Tulamben on the coast.

Enjoy panoramic views while skirting the rugged eastern coastline, spotting the idyllic fishing villages scattered intermittently. Take time to admire another of Bali’s iconic natural features the otherworldly crystal clear , rocky beaches . Step off the bikes , sink your toes into the water  and kick back for a well- earned break. Visit a honey farm of a deaf & mute couple along the way while r iding to your hotel .

Day 6: Tulamben: Snorkel Reefs & WWII Wrecks

Take the opportunity to embrace the beautiful Balinese coastline at Tulamben and enjoy the luxury of your courtyard villa accommodation. Discover the multitude of colorful fish and coral on a snorkeling trip to explore the shoreline. There are two particular points of interest off the coast here; the coral garden, a particularly picturesque spot for snorkeling, and the USAT Liberty wreckage, the remains of an American cargo ship sunk during WWII.

You’ll drop anchor around lunchtime to enjoy another fantastic Balinese meal of nasi campur, nasi goreng, and other snacks, laid out picnic-style. After a fun day out on the water, we’ll drop you back on shore mid-afternoon to enjoy the delights of Tulamben at your own leisure before a farewell dinner with the rest of the group.

Day 7: Tulamben Exploratory Ride, Tour Concludes

We have time to enjoy one last ride! After breakfast at the hotel, we'll take a relatively short 28 km loop touring the beaches of Tulamben, a nice treat to cap off your e-bike tour of Bali. Enjoy the sea vistas before pedaling inland to enjoy stunning views of the iconic volcano, Mt Agung. Your guide will help shed insight on the shadow cast by the volcano on Balinese culture, just as it casts its shadow over the lush greenery of the landscape.

As our wheels roll to a stop around midday, we bid adieu to our cycling escapade, marking the end of our exhilarating journey. While our adventure concludes during lunch time, the path to the airport is yours to navigate. Should you seek a smooth departure, our dedicated customer service team stands ready to assist. Simply reach out, and they'll ensure your onward journey is as seamless as your cycling adventure.

It has been well appointed as one of UNESCO World Heritages since the site has been able to maintain the local culture heritage in form of water irrigation system managed traditionally called by SUBAK .

It is one of recommended places to visit in Bali with the beautiful view as according to its name from Jati and luwih, where Jati mean really and Luwih meaning especial, good, and beautiful or the equivalent. The local paddies are planted in this place look typically of the high relative size plant compared with other pre-eminent paddy planted by most farmers in Bali. in line to this, Jatiluwih also famous with it's organic agriculture system due to the located in the plateau of Mount Watukaru which is suitable for the agriculture development.

Ride through in the middle of this spectacular site, past the concrete path and onto an asphalt road alongside the villages is an awesome combination and this is suitable for anyone who can ride a bike.

Cycling in Bali is a fantastic way to explore the island and discover hidden gems. Check out four self-guided cycling tours that get you into the heart of Bali’s diverse countryside in our guide below to find out more.

Page Contents:

Tips for Cycling in Bali

  • Put sunscreen on the back of your hands, arms and thighs – these are all very exposed when cycling.
  • Padded cycling shorts * are definitely worth bringing if you plan to cycle more than one short ride.
  • Cycling gloves * are also useful!
  • On long cycle rides, set off early in the day to avoid the traffic and enjoy the cooler temperatures.
  • On our bicycle tours traffic was never much of an issue apart from in Sidemen Valley and around the back of Mount Batur there were quite a few trucks.
  • The heat in Bali was much less of an issue than I expected – when you cycle you always get a breeze.
  • At bike rental places you should be given a helmet.
  • Since Bali is quite hilly, the cycle tours below all have some moderately steep uphill and downhill, so check that the gears and brakes on your bike work before you set off.
  • Bring a small backpack for water, snacks and phones etc.
  • On all the routes below except for Tour 1, a scooter or motorbike could be used instead, though there are some steep uphills which could challenge less powerful scooters.

Renting a Bicycle in Bali

Often people in Bali may get confused between bike (motorbike) and bicycle (for cycling). For this reason, if you ever email or talk to someone about ‘bike’ rental, make sure you explain clearly. In Bali a cycling bicycle is often called a push bike.

Mount Batur bike rid

Some hotels mention bike rental in their description on Booking.com, though it’s hard to know if they mean scooter or cycling bike. We emailed a few hotels in advance or asked them questions on Booking.com about the types of bikes they rented. Even if the hotel doesn’t mention this, it’s very possible that they could organise bicycles for you if you ask them in advance. Additionally, cycling tour operators are mainly happy to just lend you bikes for a day or two rather than going on a tour with them.

Where we rented bikes in Bali from

In Ubud we rented bikes from Rent Bicycle ( website for contact info, location ). The bikes we got were well used but decent mountain bikes. There is normally someone at the store between 9am and 5pm – we visited the day before we wanted to cycle to pick up the bikes so we had them early enough the following day.

In Mount Batur region there’s a great bike rental place called C.Bali Canoeing & Cycling , at the southern end of Lake Batur in Kedisan. They were very professional and had good mountain bikes.

In Candidasa we arranged bike rental through our hotel, Hotel Genggong *. If you want to do this, contact them in advance and make it clear you want good cycling bikes (push bikes). We ended up with really nice mountain bikes for a good price.

We didn’t use them, but Bali Cycling also offers bike rental, of super nice bikes. They’re based near Jimbaran, south of the airport, but can deliver bikes elsewhere for a fee.

Best Cycle Rides in Bali

1. mount batur cycling tour.

Cycling along a road through a wood in Bali

Bike Ride Details: 27 km, 315 m climb, easy.

The cycle around the crater of Mount Batur is a great ride, and not too difficult. There’s some uphill halfway through but it’s not too steep, and then everything is downhill the rest of the way. You get to cycle through a black lava field near the end, and all the way along the bike ride there are great views of Mount Batur. It’s probably the best cycle ride in Bali if you don’t want to cycle too far.

Tips : We did this cycle ride in the afternoon and the light on the lava fields and volcano was super beautiful. There aren’t many places for drinks or snacks on this route, so bring your own. Read more about this cycle . In the morning, why not hike up Mount Batur?

2. Ubud Rice Fields and Temples Cycle

Cycling in Bali with cyclist and palm trees

Bike Ride Details: 38.5 km, 600 m climb, moderately difficult.

On this cycle ride you can cycle through rice fields near Ubud, visit the famous and very photogenic Tegallalang Rice Terraces, and explore three lovely temples in Tampaksiring. All this before whizzing down along a little paved track through beautiful palm trees and rice fields back to Ubud.

Tirta Empul Temple

The first half of this cycle is uphill. It’s mainly a gradual incline, though there are some short ups and downs throughout the cycle. I pushed my bike up the steepest sections. All of this tour except the short loop around the rice fields near the beginning could be done on a scooter.

Tips : Remember to stay hydrated on this hike – have many breaks for juice and drink lots of water. Take a sarong for the temples, and swimming stuff if you want to bathe in the water place in Tampaksiring. Set off early to do most of the uphill in the cooler morning. Read more .

3. Sidemen Valley Cycling Loop from Candidasa

On a cycle ride in Bali

Bike Ride Details: 70 km, 1110 m climb, difficult.

This is a diverse cycle ride with many stops and includes snorkelling at the Blue Lagoon, visiting Bat Cave Temple and the Royal Palace in Klungkung. After this, cycle through the luscious countryside of Sidemen Valley before the steep downhill back to the coast.

Blue Lagoon

The uphill is quite long and moderately steep at times, so you need at least a basic level of fitness to complete this cycling tour. Alternatively, this tour could be done on a scooter.

Tips : Set off early, it’s a long day including all the stops. Remember to reapply sunscreen (especially on the back of your hands). Make sure your brakes work well before setting off – the downhill is steep. Read more about this cycle .

4. Batur Crater Rim Cycle

Cycling in Bali near Mount Batur

Bike Ride Details: 39 km, 1000 m climb, difficult.

The cycle ride around Batur Crater Rim has some long, steep uphills, making it difficult for cycling beginners. However, it does mean there’s a fun downhill as you cycle from the highest point down through Kintamani and back to the crater floor. There are great views and a stop at a temple in Kintamani on this cycle tour. A scooter could be used for this tour, but there are some very steep uphills so make sure you have enough power.

Tips : On the steep sections don’t be afraid to walk. Or, on the zigzags attempt to cycle and have a break on the flat between each curve. Bring a sarong AND sash if you have one to avoid the sarong/sash mafia ladies outside the temple. There are many cafes in Kintamani for a break from cycling with great views. Read more .

Gear needed for Cycling in Bali

The only special cycling gear we brought with us was padded cycling shorts ( men’s *, women’s *). These were very useful and saved a very sore bum. Helmets were always provided when we rented the bikes so you don’t need to bring these. We didn’t bring any, but cycling gloves * would be top of the list of other cycling gear I wanted. Gripping onto the bike handles all day made my hands a bit red and sore. I’d also recommend decent shoes , such as sneakers. Apart from that, we only used items you probably already have in Bali such as sunglasses, shorts and a T-shirt.

Organised Cycle Tours in Bali

If you prefer to go on a guided cycle tour rather than a self-guided one, below is a list of the main cycling tour companies in Bali.

Bali Cycling : Based in Jimbaran, this company offers many cycling tours, from easy to very difficult. Serious bike people who also offer bike rental (very nice bikes).

One of the best days of my life..

Honestly! Our day with Bali Hai Adventure Tours was one of the best days of my life.

Just my daughter and me - riding through fascinating village life, impossibly picturesque lush Bali countryside, the air soft and warm, the bike riding easy; practicing Bahasa Indonesia with every person we met- all so friendly and happy; waving and shouting out hello to children and adults as we passed - it was almost magical. We were treated like royalty all day! ... more »

Awesome Bali Adventure

This was one of the best days we have had. We organised a private tour with Bali Hai so we could go at our own pace as we had young children.

They were very accommodating and helpful. Riding around the villages and rice paddies was extremely enjoyable and we loved stopping and talking with local villagers. My children, ages 11 and 8 thoroughly enjoyed the day, even though they were hesitant at first. Riding through the Bamboo forest was amazing... more »

I seriously cannot express how memorable and incredibly life-changing and eye opening this bike tour was. They have the tour down to a science: and truly put the customers first. The tour was supposed to end at 3pm, but my friends and I wanted to see everything. They never rushed us, and took us around to many places that I will never forget ... more »
