Few credit cards can compete with the Chase Sapphire Reserve ® when you’re looking for a premium travel rewards credit card. There are also few, if any, travel rewards cards that offer a better selection of travel insurance benefits.

Travel insurance benefits and protections that come with your credit card can provide valuable assistance if your trip is disrupted, reimburse you for expenses if things go wrong during your journey, and much more.

It’s become increasingly more important to have a level of travel insurance for peace of mind and to make you whole after an unexpected event. While the travel insurance that comes on your credit card is not meant to take the place of a comprehensive travel insurance policy , it can provide sufficient coverage for most trips you make.

Today, we’ll dive deep into the assortment of travel insurance benefits that come with the Chase Sapphire Reserve card.

We’ll also look at how the coverages work, glance at the process for filing a claim if something does go wrong, and in the end, give you all the other reasons we like the card for frequent travelers.

Chase Sapphire Reserve Card — Travel Insurance Benefits and Protections

There are so many reasons we like the Chase Sapphire Reserve card overall and we’ll cover those later in our article. For now, we’re going to jump right into the focus of our review, the travel insurance benefits and protections offered on the card.

Some benefits or protections can save you money , others provide assistance during your travels, and yet others offer peace of mind .

Here is our breakdown of the travel insurance coverages that can be found on your Chase Sapphire Reserve card.

Hertz Car Rental

The auto rental insurance coverage on your Chase Sapphire Reserve card could save you hundreds of dollars on your car rental bill. Simply reserve and pay for your car rental with the card, decline the car rental agency’s collision damage waiver (CDW) or loss damage waiver (LDW) coverage, and receive primary car rental coverage for theft or damage to the rental car.

Primary coverage means that you do not have to file a claim with another insurance company first.

Additional coverage includes loss of use charges and reasonable and customary towing charges.

You and authorized drivers listed on the rental agreement are covered.

Coverage limitations and conditions apply, including:

  • $75,000 coverage limit
  • Rental period cannot exceed 31 days
  • Liability coverage and the loss of personal items are not covered
  • Expenses reimbursed by other insurance are not covered
  • Antique vehicles, vans that carry more than 9 people, motorcycle/bikes, limos, and recreational vehicles are not covered

Bottom Line: The Chase Sapphire Reserve card comes with primary car rental insurance. If a car rental agency charges $20 per day for this coverage, you could save $140 on a 7-day rental by declining the rental car agency’s collision damage waiver or loss damage waiver coverage.

When you pay for your trip partially or in full with your Chase Sapphire Reserve card, with Ultimate Rewards points earned on your card, or a combination of both, you could receive a benefit if your trip has to be canceled or is disrupted for a covered reason.

Examples of covered events could include:

  • Severe weather that prevents you from beginning a trip or keeps you from continuing your travels
  • Illness or death of an immediate family member or travel companion
  • Certain legal obligations

Examples of expenses reimbursed include:

  • Prepaid non-refundable expenses charged by a travel supplier, such as a tour operator, airline, or other common carriers
  • Non-refundable prepaid expenses charged by rental car or travel agencies
  • Under trip interruption, $250 for emergency ground transport

The trip cancellation/interruption coverage that comes with the Chase Sapphire Reserve card pays up to $10,000 per person, per trip , up to $20,000 per occurrence, and up to a maximum of $40,000 in a 12-month period.

Examples of losses that would not be covered could include:

  • Cancellation by the travel provider (unless due to severe weather)
  • You change your plans
  • Preexisting conditions
  • Financial insolvency of the travel provider
  • Losses that occur on trips exceeding 60 days

Hot Tip: The trip cancellation and trip interruption insurance that comes with a credit card, including the Chase Sapphire Reserve card, does not cover voluntary trip cancellations. If you think you might have to cancel a trip, you should purchase Cancel for Any Reason Insurance which provides coverage regardless of the reason for cancellation.

Traveler waiting at the airport departure area for his delayed flight

Trip delays of more than 6 hours or an overnight stay trigger the trip delay reimbursement coverage on your Chase Sapphire Reserve card. You and your eligible family members could receive up to $500 for each purchased ticket , per trip, for unreimbursed expenses for incidentals, lodging, and meals.

If your checked or carry-on luggage is lost, stolen, or damaged, you could receive up to $3,000 per person , per trip. There is a sub-limit of $500 included in the $3,000 maximum for valuable items such as jewelry watches, and specific electronics.

When your bags are delayed for more than 6 hours , you could receive up to $100 per day for 5 days for reimbursement of essentials such as clothing, toiletries, and a cell phone charger.

Make just a call if you have a roadside emergency and receive assistance with services such as flat tire replacement, emergency fuel, jump-start service, towing, lock-outs, and more.

The number of covered service calls each 12-month period is limited to 4 and the maximum coverage is $50 per service call. Any charges over that amount will be charged to the Chase Sapphire Reserve card.

Pay for at least a portion of your common carrier trip with your Chase Sapphire Reserve card. Then, if you or an immediate family member become injured or sick during your travels and need emergency evacuation, the card could provide up to $100,000 in coverage .

Trips must be at least 5 days in length , not more than 60 days, and the traveler must be more than 100 miles from home.

This is not reimbursement coverage — you must call the benefits administrator at the time of the incident to initiate emergency transport.

It’s rare to find any medical or dental coverage provided on a credit card, but the Chase Sapphire Reserve card offers this benefit for its cardholders and qualifying family members.

Here’s how the coverage works:

  • Provides up to $2,500 ($50 deducible) for emergency medical or dental services during a covered trip
  • Up to $75 per day for 5 days for a hotel if ordered by the attending physician
  • Emergency medical/dental services, hospital room, ambulance, medicines, and supplies are examples of covered items
  • The trip must be more than 100 miles from your residence

Travel Accident Insurance is a benefit seldom ever used but it can provide peace of mind knowing that if a covered death or dismemberment occurred during you or your family’s common carrier trip, there could be a benefit provided.

The card comes with up to $1,000,000 in coverage.

Whether you need assistance planning your trip or need help during your travels, you’ll have access to a dedicated phone line 24/7 . Receive assistance such as help securing emergency transportation, translation, medical, and legal referrals, help with lost passports, or emergency ticket replacement.

The cost of the actual services received is the responsibility of the cardholder.

Bottom Line: The Chase Sapphire Reserve card comes with one of the best collections of travel insurance benefits and protections available. To learn about additional credit cards also offering travel insurance, check out our list of the best credit cards for travel insurance .

How To File a Claim

Receipt in grass

The best time to think about filing a travel insurance claim is before an event happens . Before setting off on your trip, it’s wise to take a few minutes to learn how you or your travel companions could receive assistance, should your trip be disrupted.

Reviewing the process of how to contact the claims administrator en route, should it become necessary, could save you money and frustration after the fact for not following the correct procedure for coverage to be valid.

Reviewing the claims process in advance also makes it easier to gather needed information at the time of disruption, such as photos or a statement from the travel provider, versus trying to secure the needed documentation once you’ve arrived home from a disrupted trip.

Here’s what you’ll need to know about filing a claim for Chase credit card travel insurance benefits and/or protections.

Each specific travel insurance coverage has stated time limits to report a claim, submit the completed and signed claim form, and for supplying all of the required documentation. Failing to do so could jeopardize the processing of your claim.

The best rule of thumb is to contact the claims administrator as soon as an event occurs . This action can also help you receive proper instructions on how to proceed to make sure your expenses will be covered.

You will be asked to submit documentation for your claim to be processed properly. Keep in mind that Chase is not processing your claim as the card issuer utilizes a third-party claims administrator .

You could be asked to provide any of the following information:

  • A completed and signed claim form
  • Your credit card statement that includes the last 4 digits of the card and receipts showing you paid for the trip/car rental with the eligible card and/or associated points
  • A copy of your common carrier ticket and itinerary
  • Any related medical documents and/or death certificate
  • Documentation from the travel provider as to why the trip was interrupted, canceled, or delayed
  • Receipts for purchases and food expense receipts over $50
  • Copy of the travel provider’s cancellation or refund policy
  • Any additional documentation requested by the benefit administrator

Hot Tip: The claims process will be easier if you have saved receipts, kept travel provider cancellation/refund policy documentation, and have copies of your ticket information and itineraries.

Our list of Chase Sapphire Reserve card travel insurance benefits is an overview only. We have also abbreviated the coverage descriptions. You will need to access the official Guide to Benefits for the card for terms, conditions, current coverage limits, and claim procedures.

Also, note that most travel insurance benefits that come with credit cards are normally secondary to other insurance you might have that would otherwise cover the loss. If you are compensated by an airline for lost luggage, for example, you would only have coverage via your credit card for any excess loss you incurred above the airline’s payment (up to the limits of coverage).

The newest premium travel rewards card on the block is the Capital One Venture X card . We like that the card comes with an annual $300 credit for travel purchased via Capital One Travel .

The card’s annual fee is also lower than most premium travel rewards cards but you’ll still find travel insurance , worldwide lounge access , Global Entry or TSA PreCheck fee reimbursement, stellar earnings on travel, cell phone protection , and a respectable 2x earnings on all other purchases.

While the high annual fee may be off-putting, the Chase Sapphire Reserve card is packed with plenty of benefits to justify the expense — if you’ll utilize the majority of those benefits.

Our focus today was on travel insurance benefits that alone could save you money, provide compensation, and/or reimbursement if your trip is disrupted. But there is additional value in all the other benefits offered on the card .

A Priority Pass Select membership, for example, will set you back as much as $469 each year, plus $35 for each guest, per visit. The Priority Pass membership that comes with the Chase Sapphire Reserve card offers unlimited access for the cardholder and allows 2 additional guests at no charge.

The card also comes with a $300 travel credit , and up to $100 for Global Entry, NEXUS. or TSA PreCheck fees.

If you can utilize the benefits, the card can be worth it.

For Capital One products listed on this page, some of the above benefits are provided by Visa ® or Mastercard ® and may vary by product. See the respective Guide to Benefits for details, as terms and exclusions apply.

Enrollment required through Capital One website or mobile app. Upon enrollment, eligible cardholders will remain at upgraded status level through December 31, 2024.  Please note, enrolling through the normal Hertz Gold Plus Rewards enrollment process (e.g. at Hertz.com) will not automatically detect a cardholder as being eligible for the program and cardholders will not be automatically upgraded to the applicable status tier.  Additional terms apply.

If you will utilize the benefits offered on the Chase Sapphire Reserve card, the card is definitely worth it.

In fact, we’ve estimated that the card offers benefits that could be valued at nearly $3,500.

Does the Chase Sapphire Reserve card have primary car rental insurance?

The Chase Sapphire Reserve card does offer primary car rental insurance.

Primary car rental insurance does not require that you file a claim with your own car insurance company insurance first. If a covered event occurs, you will have coverage on your Chase Sapphire Reserve card.

You must pay for the entire rental with your Chase Sapphire Reserve card and decline the rental car agency’s collision damage waiver coverage for coverage to be valid.

Can I have more than 1 Chase Sapphire credit card?

While you can have more than 1 Chase credit card, you can only be the primary cardholder on 1 Chase Sapphire credit card, either the Chase Sapphire Reserve card or the Chase Sapphire Preferred card. You could, however, be an authorized user on another Sapphire card.

Which card is better, the Chase Sapphire Preferred card or the Chase Sapphire Reserve card?

Both the Chase Sapphire Preferred card and Chase Sapphire Reserve card offer benefits for the frequent traveler.

The better card for you will depend on your spending mix, your preferred redemption options, your tolerance for paying an annual fee, and the level of travel benefits/protections you will use on the card.

To assist you further, we’ve put together a detailed article comparing the 2 cards. Access our article on the Chase Sapphire Reserve card vs. the Chase Sapphire Preferred card .

Chase Sapphire travel insurance overview

Chase is one of the most generous issuers when it comes to offering travel insurance benefits, particularly for its travel-focused Sapphire cards. The $95-annual-fee Chase Sapphire Preferred Card and the $550-annual-fee Chase Sapphire Reserve offer high coverage limits and industry-leading reimbursement terms, surpassing most other travel credit cards.

What Chase Sapphire travel insurance covers

To qualify for any of these complimentary protections, you must use your Chase Sapphire card to pay for a portion or all of your travel expenses, like your flight, hotel or rental car. Depending on the coverage, your immediate family members may also qualify for reimbursement — even if you’re not traveling with them.

Thinking about adding an authorized user to your Chase Sapphire Preferred card? Here are the benefits of adding a family member or trusted friend to your Sapphire Preferred .

Trip cancellation and interruption insurance

If you need to cancel your trip or it’s interrupted due to an unforeseen circumstance, the Chase Sapphire cardholder and immediate family members can receive up to $10,000 per person and up to $20,000 total per eligible trip in reimbursement.

If your claim is approved, trip cancellation and interruption insurance will provide reimbursement for non-refundable travel expenses, including flights, accommodations, excursions, and cruises. If you paid your travel expenses with Chase Ultimate Rewards® points , Chase will reimburse you at a rate of 1 cent per point.

For this benefit, your immediate family members do not have to be traveling with you as the primary cardholder, although you will have needed to pay for at least some of their travel expenses to qualify. Here are some examples of situations where trip cancellation and interruption insurance may kick in:

  • Accidental injury, illness or death.
  • Severe weather.
  • Change in military orders for you or your spouse.
  • Jury duty.
  • Permanent residence or travel accommodations become uninhabitable.
  • Organized public transportation strike.

Trip delay reimbursement

Next time you’re stuck in a rolling delay by a common carrier, you and your family members can be covered for reasonable expenses like meals, lodging and toiletries with trip delay reimbursement.

The Chase Sapphire Preferred provides up to $500 in reimbursement for each ticket when you are delayed more than 12 hours or requires an overnight stay. The Chase Sapphire Reserve provides the same coverage limits, but offers reimbursement for delays of six hours or more (or requires an overnight stay).

Baggage delay insurance

If you don’t receive your baggage for more than six hours, you can receive up to $100 per day — for a maximum of five days total. Baggage delay insurance will reimburse you to help purchase essential items that you may need in your bag, like clothing, toiletries, chargers, and more. This coverage applies to you and immediate family members that are impacted by delayed or misdirected baggage.

Lost luggage reimbursement

On a similar note, if your luggage is lost by the common carrier altogether, this coverage can help to recoup some of those costs with your carry-on or checked bag.

With either Chase Sapphire card, you can receive up to $3,000 per covered person per trip. It’s worth noting that within this coverage, there’s a $500 limit for jewelry and watches, as well as another $500 limit for cameras and other electronic equipment.

Primary rental car insurance

When renting an eligible car for up to 31 days, Chase provides primary rental car insurance that covers theft and damage. The coverage limits are slightly different between the Chase Sapphire cards. While the more premium Chase Sapphire Reserve provides up to $75,000 in coverage, the Chase Sapphire Preferred provides reimbursement “up to the actual cash value of most rented cars”.

In either case, you’ll need to pay for the entire car rental with your Chase Sapphire card and decline the rental car company’s collision damage waiver as “accepting this coverage will cancel out your benefit”.

Roadside assistance

Chase offers a complimentary roadside assistance referral program for Sapphire Reserve cardholders that’s available 24/7 within the U.S. and Canada. Whether you’re driving your own car or a rental vehicle, cardholders can contact the Cross Country Motor Club at 1-866-7978 for towing, jump starts, fuel delivery and more. You can receive up to $50 in reimbursement for up to four service events per year.

On the other hand, Chase Sapphire Preferred cardholders can reach out to a pay-per-use roadside dispatch program, available 24/7 within the U.S by calling 1-800-847-2869. Cardholders are required to pay for all services rendered at a pre-negotiated fee.

Travel and emergency assistance services

The Chase Sapphire cards offer travel and emergency assistance services to the primary cardholder, as well as spouse and dependent children under the age of 22, even if they’re not traveling with you at the moment.

Travel and emergency assistance services can provide medical or legal referrals, or transportation coordination 24/7, but like roadside dispatch, the cardholder is financially responsible for any services rendered.

What Chase Sapphire travel insurance doesn’t cover

While each coverage comes with specific details outlined within each benefits guide, here’s an overview of some noteworthy exclusions:

  • Trip cancellation and interruption insurance does not cover a change in plans or financial circumstances; pre-existing conditions; travel during civil unrest or war; failure to obtain necessary travel documents; and more.
  • Trip delay reimbursement does not cover delays due to a covered hazard made public or prepaid expenses related to your covered trip.
  • Baggage delay insurance does not cover prosthetic devices; any loss resulting from war or civil unrest; money and securities; and more.
  • Lost luggage reimbursement does not cover items that have been removed from carry-on luggage by you or inadvertently left behind; money and securities; and more.
  • Primary rental car insurance does not cover rentals over 31 days; as well as high-value vehicles (Chase Sapphire Preferred); antique vehicles; cargo vans; motorcycles or mopeds; limousines; and more.

Additional coverage by the Chase Sapphire Reserve

While the Chase Sapphire Reserve® comes with a costly $550 annual fee, this premium travel card offers a leg up on the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card , providing a few additional benefits when traveling:

  • Emergency evacuation and transportation: This benefit can cover up to $100,000 in necessary emergency travel evacuation and transportation services for you, your spouse, and eligible dependent children as a result of injury or sickness.
  • Emergency medical and dental benefit: You can receive up to $2,500 for emergency treatment and medical expenses for accidental injury or illness, subject to a $50 deductible.
  • Travel accident insurance: You can receive reimbursement for accidental death, dismemberment, or a combination of loss of speech, sight or hearing, up to $1 million when traveling on a common carrier, or up to $100,000 during your trip. While the Sapphire Preferred also offers this benefit, the common carrier coverage amount is lower.

How Chase Sapphire travel insurance works

Each coverage has specific terms and criteria you’ll need to meet before filing a claim with supporting documentation. For example, you can qualify for trip cancellation and interruption insurance by paying a portion of your travels with a Chase Sapphire card, while primary auto collision damage waiver requires you to pay for your entire rental with the card.

Once you submit your claim and it’s approved by the benefits administrator, you can receive reimbursement up to the coverage limits stated. If you’re interested in learning more about each coverage, you’ll want to review the benefits guide for the Chase Sapphire Preferred and the Chase Sapphire Reserve to see a full list of limitations.

How to claim your Chase Sapphire travel insurance

Chase Sapphire Preferred vs. Sapphire Reserve: What’s the difference?

While the Chase Sapphire Reserve offers a bit more well-rounded travel coverages, we’ll also compare the rest of the Reserve card’s benefits to the Chase Sapphire Preferred’s travel benefits .

What is trip interruption insurance.

chase sapphire reserve travel interruption insurance

Booking a vacation often comes with a lot of “what ifs.” What if I get sick and test positive for COVID-19 before boarding my flight? What if a hurricane is forecast to make landfall in south Florida the day my cruise is departing Miami?

Trip cancellation and interruption insurance can be an effective way to mitigate those worries, knowing you would be covered if something extraordinary happens that either curtails or cancels your trip.

Read on to know more about the different types of trip coverage provided through credit card issuers and travel insurers.

How does trip interruption insurance work?

Trip interruption insurance can reimburse travelers for expenses associated with covered situations that can unexpectedly cut your trip short. It provides reimbursement for prepaid, unused and non-refundable travel expenses, such as plane tickets, hotel stays or cruise line reservations.

How do I get trip interruption insurance?

Many credit card issuers offer some form of trip interruption insurance as a benefit to their customers, as well as an incentive for cardmembers to book travel using their cards. If you are unsure if your credit card issuer offers this benefit, you can call the toll-free number on the back of your card or go online to find out.

Credit card travel insurance vs. insurance company policies

Travel policies for both trip cancellation and interruption are regulated insurance products sold online by travel insurance issuers. Credit card-based trip interruption coverage, which is often capped at a few thousand dollars of reimbursement, should not be viewed as a substitute for these insurance policies. Some credit card products also cap their trip interruption payouts at $1,500 per person and $6,000 or less for the whole family for each trip and/or limit their coverage to prepaid passenger fares, such as plane tickets or cruise line fares. For this reason, some travelers will purchase travel insurance policies for coverage in excess of the basic coverage their card issuer offers.

What’s covered by trip interruption insurance?

Here are several situations in which trip interruption insurance may be applicable:

  • A severe weather event such as a hurricane or flood striking your booked vacation destination or cancelling flights to it—as well as mandatory evacuations prior to a hurricane making landfall
  • Severe weather or wildfires destroying your primary residence while you are traveling
  • Accidental death or bodily injury for a passenger on an airline or cruise line, as well as any serious illness for you, your direct family member, or your traveling companion during your trip
  • Active duty or reservist members of the military receiving documented orders that cut short their vacation—where the spouse traveling with them is also covered
  • An organized airline employee strike that leads to the cancellation of your flight

Please note that in order for coverage to apply, you must first notify the common carrier such as the airline or cruise line that interrupted your trip and request whatever refund, miles or other compensation they are prepared to offer. You will need to do this before submitting a claim to your insurer or credit card Benefit Administrator.

What isn’t covered by trip interruption insurance?

There are many situations that can arise including common occurrences that usually aren’t covered by trip interruption insurance.

  • Any trip interruption due to a change in plans by you and your traveling companion or failure to obtain passports or the necessary visas in time before departure
  • Trips interrupted due to a traveler or their traveling companion’s pre-existing medical conditions
  • Financial insolvency with default of an airline or cruise line on its obligations
  • Acts of war whether declared or undeclared or an armed rebellion in a destination country
  • Any trip lasting over 60 days

For the full list of what is and isn’t covered by trip interruption insurance provided through booking travel using your credit card, check your cardmember benefit guide. For any active purchased travel insurance policy, read the terms and conditions carefully.

What’s the difference between trip interruption insurance and trip cancellation coverage?

Trip interruption is often confused with trip cancellation insurance, but there are key differences between the two, notably the scope of coverage based on the timing of events. Trip interruption coverage starts on the day of your scheduled departure and ends on the day of your scheduled return home. Trip cancellation coverage begins once you’ve booked a trip using a credit card that offers this type of benefit, or from the day you purchase a travel insurance policy to protect your upcoming itinerary.

Examples of the differences between trip cancellation and interruption coverage

With trip interruption coverage, you can file a claim for reimbursement if a covered event happens after you leave for your trip. With trip cancellation coverage, you can file a claim for reimbursement if forced to cancel a trip for a covered reason prior to departure.

Interruption coverage to reimburse the cost of a ticket change fee to get home could apply if a passenger makes their initial flight, but the same pilots’ strike cancels their connecting flight.

Although it is not a substitute for travel cancellation insurance, trip interruption insurance can reimburse travelers for prepaid non-refundable land, air or cruise arrangements that are not used, as well as change fees and ground transportation. Terms and conditions apply to trip interruption provided as a credit card benefit, so read terms and conditions carefully.

Chase Sapphire Travel Insurance Offered On Cards

T he Chase Sapphire Reserve® and the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card are two of Chase's most coveted credit card products. With benefits ranging from travel and dining to lounge access and purchase protection, each card has its own set of perks. And one of these perks that's especially beneficial is the travel insurance offered on Chase Sapphire cards. Although you probably won't need to use it often, this particular perk can be a lifesaver if travel doesn't go quite as planned.

Don't wait for something unfortunate to happen on your trip to understand how the insurance works. Find out what's covered, how to claim it and other essential information that can help you best utilize this credit card benefit when things go wrong with this guide to Chase Sapphire travel insurance.

How Does Chase Sapphire Travel Insurance Work?

Chase's Sapphire travel insurance can cover your trip in case of cancellation or interruption, reimburse expenses due to trip delays or lost/delayed baggage and provide supplemental medical insurance or evacuation coverage in case of accident or emergency.

To use Chase Sapphire travel insurance, you must be a Chase Sapphire cardholder and have used that card to pay for some or all of your travel costs for whatever particular trip you'd like to claim the insurance on. Chase defines the cardholder as someone whose 'name is embossed on an eligible Card issued in the United States.' In many cases, spouses, children and immediate family members* may also be covered, even when the cardholder isn't traveling with them, but this varies by card and insurance benefit.

Finally, it's important to know that travel insurance benefits vary by Sapphire card. The travel insurance benefits the Chase Sapphire Reserve card offers can differ from the travel insurance benefits the Chase Sapphire Preferred card provides.

What Is Covered With Chase Sapphire Travel Insurance?

Here are the various travel insurance benefits available for Chase Sapphire cardholders:

Trip Cancellation/Interruption Insurance

This benefit offers reimbursement of up to $10,000 per covered person and $20,000 per trip for cancellation or interruption of travel for the cardholder and immediate family members, assuming a part of the trip has been charged to the cardholder's Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card or Chase Sapphire Reserve®. Maximum coverage in a 12-month period is limited to $40,000.

Eligible travel expenses are considered non-refundable, prepaid travel expenses, things like flights, cruises, hotels, car rentals and more. If you paid using Rewards points, you'll be reimbursed at their monetary value or at $.01 per point.

Chase Sapphire Travel Insurance covers situations like:

  • Injury, illness or hospitalization that prevents you from traveling
  • Severe weather events
  • Jury duty or military order
  • Quarantine imposed by a physician
  • The lodging at your destination becoming uninhabitable

Chase Sapphire Travel Insurance doesn't cover situations like:

  • A change in your financial circumstances
  • Failure to obtain required visas or passports
  • Not wanting to travel due to civil unrest

Trip Delay Reimbursement

This insurance benefit offers reimbursement for reasonable expenses incurred during a trip delay for up to $500 for each ticket purchase when you're delayed for more than six hours or require an overnight stay for Chase Sapphire Reserve cardholders and more than 12 hours or require an overnight stay for Chase Sapphire Preferred cardholders.

The benefit extends to both the cardholder and accompanying family members (spouses and children under 26). The insurance covers reasonable expenses such as meals, lodging, toiletries and medication.

Travel Accident Insurance

If you have a transportation incident during travel, travel accident insurance covers you, assuming you paid for the transport using a Chase Sapphire card. Travel accident insurance extends to the cardholder and immediate family members.

For Chase Sapphire Preferred cardholders, the covered loss of life benefit amount in the case of a common carrier travel accident (like a flight, cruise, or train incident) is $500,000 per insured person. The 24-hour travel accident insurance, meanwhile, is $100,000. Specific losses covered include things like loss of sight, hearing or limbs.

For Chase Sapphire Reserve cardholders, a maximum amount of up to $1 million is covered for common carrier travel accidents, while 24-hour travel accident insurance remains at $100,000.

Travel and Emergency Assistance Services

If you run into an emergency when traveling, you have access to complimentary assistance along with your spouse and any dependent children under 22 who are traveling with you. This includes things like emergency transportation assistance, medical referrals and legal referrals. However, the costs of these services aren't covered, just the help in sourcing them.

Lost Luggage Reimbursement

If your or your immediate family members' luggage is lost, your checked and carry-on baggage are each covered for up to $3,000 per person per trip. Jewelry and watches are capped at $500 per covered person as are cameras and other electronics.

These items aren't covered in the policy:

  • Items you may have left behind
  • Documents/papers
  • Travelers' Checks

Baggage Delay Insurance

If your or your immediate family members' baggage is delayed for more than six hours, this benefit offers reimbursement for emergency purchases of essentials like toiletries, chargers and clothing. You can get up to $100 daily (up to a maximum of five days).

There's a long list of items that aren't covered; here are some to note:

  • Jewelry and watches
  • Cameras and electronics
  • Hearing aids

Auto Rental Collision Damage Waiver

You can also benefit from the Auto Rental Collision Damage Waiver. The Sapphire version of coverage is Primary , meaning you don't have to file with your insurance company first. This offers reimbursement for damages caused by theft or collision up to $75,000 for rental periods up to 31 days when the Chase Sapphire Reserve card is used to pay for the entire car rental transaction.

Cardholders of the Chase Sapphire Preferred also have this benefit, but the reimbursement amount for damages caused by theft or collision is capped at the Actual Cash Value of most rented cars.

Additional Benefits Covered With Chase Sapphire Reserve Travel Insurance

These are two additional travel insurance benefits available only for Chase Sapphire Reserve cardholders. Here's what they cover.

Emergency Evacuation and Transportation

This benefit covers emergency evacuation and transportation up to $100,000 for you, your spouse and eligible children under the age of 19 (or 26 if they're enrolled as a full"time student at an accredited university). Note that this must be pre-approved by Chase in conjunction with a doctor who certifies that the evacuation is necessary due to severe injury or illness. This benefit also covers repatriation of remains up to $1,000.

Emergency Medical and Dental Benefits

Chase Sapphire Reserve travel insurance also offers emergency medical and dental benefits. Oddly, this benefit only applies to trips that were arranged by a travel agency.

The amount covered is up to $2,500 with a $50 deductible on covered trips. In addition to the cardholder, this benefit covers spouses/domestic partners and/or legally dependent children under 19 (or 26 if legally enrolled as a full-time student at an accredited university).

Do note that this benefit doesn't cover medical situations caused by adventure activities that travelers may do, like scuba diving, parachuting, rock climbing and beyond.

How Do I Claim My Chase Sapphire Travel Insurance?

To file a claim with Chase Sapphire Travel Insurance, you must call the Benefit Administrator. Each type of insurance has different requirements for what documentation you need to provide when submitting a claim.

Each type of claim also has a different time period allowed for submitting a claim. These are the following timelines to know:

  • For Trip Cancellation/Trip Interruption claims : Submit within 20 days of cancellation/interruption. Then, return the completed and signed forms/requested documentation within 90 days (or a maximum of one year after the 90-day deadline).
  • For Trip Delay Reimbursement claims : Submit within 60 days of delay. Then, return completed and signed forms/requested documentation within 100 days.
  • For Lost Luggage claims : Start by filling out the proper documentation for the airline that lost your luggage (save a copy). Contact the Benefits Administrator within 20 days of when your baggage was lost, damaged or stolen. You should receive a claim form within 15 days, which you should submit, alongside documentation, within 90 days.
  • For Baggage Delay claims : Start by completing the proper documentation for the airline on which your bag was delayed (save a copy). Contact the Benefits Administrator within 20 days of the delay, then return documentation and forms within 90 days (or a maximum of one year after the 90-day deadline).
  • For Auto Rental Collision Damage Waiver claims : Request the proper documentation from the car rental company (and police, if applicable), then contact the Benefits Administrator within 100 days of the incident. Submitting documentation varies by state but is usually required within 120-365 days of the incident.
  • Emergency Evacuation and Transportation claims : Call the Benefits Administrator immediately upon incident, then submit the claim and documentation within 180 days of the occurrence.
  • Emergency Medical and Dental Benefits claims : Call the Benefit Administrator within 90 days of receiving medical care on your trip, then submit the claim and documentation within 180 days of the occurrence.

Chase Sapphire Reserve cardholders can call 1-888-675-1461 while in the U.S. or call collect at 1-804-281-5772 while outside of the U.S. to file claims. Chase Sapphire Preferred cardholders can call 1-888-320-9961 while in the U.S. or call collect at 1-804-673-1691 while outside of the US to file claims.

An alternative is to visit www.eclaimsline.com to submit your claims.

Bottom Line

Hopefully, you won't need to use it, but it's nice to know Sapphire cardholders have access to Chase Sapphire travel insurance benefits that can help you out of a minor (or serious) pickle.

However, it's important to read the fine print for both the Chase Sapphire Preferred travel insurance benefits and the Chase Sapphire Reserve travel insurance benefits , as there are many exclusions and provisions that you should know before submitting a claim. And when it comes to submitting those claims, make sure to do so within the allocated time periods to ensure coverage.

*Unless otherwise specified within each type of insurance, Chase states that 'Immediate family members include: spouse, and parents thereof; sons and daughters, including adopted children and stepchildren; parents, including stepparents; brothers and sisters; grandparents and grandchildren; aunts or uncles; nieces or nephews; and Domestic Partner and parents thereof, including Domestic Partners and spouses of any individual of this definition. Immediate Family Members also include legal guardians or wards.'

This is your sign to check your credit card for travel insurance

Before buying a policy, know what your card covers and how to use it.

chase sapphire reserve travel interruption insurance

When a trip goes haywire, travel insurance suddenly comes into focus. A recent spat between a Boston restaurant owner and a customer highlighted the intricacies — and far-reaching impacts — of what happens when a trip is canceled.

According to posts on X , the now-viral incident began in January when New York resident Trevor Chauvin-DeCaro became sick and was hospitalized. Because of his condition, Chauvin-DeCaro says he was no longer able to travel to Boston as originally planned. However, he said he used credit card travel insurance to be reimbursed for expenses including hotel, train and restaurant reservations.

Here’s where the story gets a bit murky. Chauvin-DeCaro and his husband were set to dine at Table, an upscale restaurant owned by Jen Royle in Boston’s North End. In screenshots posted to X from a social media exchange with what appears to be Royle, Chauvin-DeCaro is scolded for disputing the $250 reservation cancellation charge.

Wild story incoming. Last month, we had to cancel our Boston trip after I was hospitallized. As a result I had to use travel insurance to get my money back on our hotel, train, and restaurant reservations. Today I got this message from @tableboston pic.twitter.com/d7jc84rllJ — chase travel insurance it girl (@trevorshowvan) February 22, 2024

“I just wanted to thank you personally for screwing over my restaurant and my staff when you disputed your cancellation fee,” the message reads. “I really hope in the future you have more respect for restaurants, especially small businesses such as mine. Pathetic.”

In a heated exchange, the restaurant insists the $250 charge was a credit card dispute while Chauvin-DeCaro stresses his use of credit card travel insurance, even noting that “the decision to use [it] to cover the lofty cancellation fee was not made lightly.”

Filing an insurance claim with your credit card company is different from a dispute. For many travelers, your credit card may come with built-in travel protections and you may not even know it. Here’s how to use it properly.

How credit card travel insurance works

Whether it’s a trip across the world — or in Chauvin-DeCaro’s case, up to Boston — having travel insurance can provide major relief if things go awry. Flight delays, lost baggage, illness, injuries and other unforeseen events can disrupt even the best-laid plans.

There are dozens of credit cards with embedded travel insurance coverage, which include policies like trip interruption and cancellation ; delayed and lost baggage; rental car coverage; emergency medical assistance and more. Your credit card agreement will detail this coverage.

Many popular credit cards, like the Platinum Card from American Express or Chase Sapphire Reserve Card, offer these benefits. “If you have a card that’s travel-focused, there’s a good chance you may have travel protection benefits and not even realize it,” says Stella Shon, a credit card expert for Upgraded Points . “Every cardholder has a benefits guide online from their issuer so a first step is to check there.”

To qualify for coverage, a traveler must use that specific card to make the travel purchases and provide proof, as with any insurance policy. When the time comes to file a claim, there’s usually an option to either call a specific number to call or do it online, Shon says.

Filing an insurance claim vs. disputing a charge

While it may seem like semantics, there is a major distinction between a disputed charge and a travel insurance claim, according to Gary Leff, a credit card expert and founder of the View From the Wing blog.

“Disputing a credit card charge is for when you didn’t actually make a purchase that was billed to you, when the product or service provided isn’t what had been described, or when you don’t receive what you bought,” Leff says. In other words, a dispute addresses risks when the transaction itself goes awry. A dispute can be requested on any credit card under the Fair Credit Billing Act.

Conversely, embedded credit card travel insurance, underwritten by a third-party company and labeled as “trip interruption” or “trip cancellation,” for instance, operates differently. Typically, it’s higher-end credit cards like American Express’s Platinum Card or the Chase Sapphire Reserve Card that offer this benefit.

Card travel insurance offers reimbursement for nonrefundable payments and other trip-related expenses when incidents arise before or during a trip. While monetary compensation is a primary benefit, there is another valuable perk of travel insurance: peace of mind.

“You may have agreed to make a purchase, but circumstances outside of yours and the merchant’s control mean you’re unable to take advantage of that purchase,” Leff says. In other words, travel insurance addresses risks outside of a transaction. In either instance, travelers must provide documentation to go along with the claim.

Then, on the merchant side, there are key differences between a customer disputing a charge versus filing a travel insurance claim. Axel Hellman, co-founder of transportation company OurBus , says that “a travel insurance claim has no impact on the business.” Hellman notes that he typically wouldn’t even know if a customer uses an insurance benefit.

Neither Chauvin-DeCaro nor Royle responded to a request for an interview by The Washington Post. Spokespeople for both American Express and Chase say there wouldn’t ever be a situation in which credit card travel insurance would submit a dispute for the cardholder.

However, a disputed charge filed by a customer can have “significantly negative” consequences. “Businesses like ours are not only fined when there’s a dispute, but eventually we could lose processing privileges,” Hellman says. “That’s regardless if the dispute is valid or not.”

Meanwhile, the social media exchange between Chauvin-DeCaro and Royle continued to escalate and ended with Table’s owner threatening legal action.

A combination of an insurance claim and a dispute may have been at play here. Leff suspects that Chauvin-DeCaro may have contacted his credit card company to make an insurance claim and the agent initiated a dispute on his behalf. That further highlights the importance of travelers distinguishing between the two.

The Chase Sapphire Reserve Review

Nomadic Matt holding his Chase Sapphire Reserve credit card on a backdrop of a marbled kitchen counter

Nomadic Matt has partnered with CardRatings for our coverage of credit card products. Nomadic Matt and CardRatings may receive a commission from card issuers.

The upgraded version of the Chase Sapphire Preferred, the card_name is my one of my favorite premium cards. It offers a lot of fantastic perks for avid travelers.

While The Platinum Card® from American Express gets all the fanfare in terms of luxury rewards cards , I personally prefer the Chase Sapphire Reserve. It comes with better points-earning bonus categories; more practical, everyday perks (which I’ll get into below); and more comprehensive travel insurance.

Today, I want to share a bit more about this card so you can determine whether it’s the right card for you.

Table of Contents

What is the Chase Sapphire Reserve?

Chase sapphire reserve travel insurance, using your chase ultimate rewards® points, taking advantage of chase’s transfer partners, chase sapphire reserve vs chase sapphire preferred, pros of the chase sapphire reserve, cons of the chase sapphire reserve, who is the chase sapphire reserve for.

The card_name (often referred to as CSR) is a travel rewards card issued by Chase. The card comes with a $550 USD annual fee and a host of benefits like lounge access, travel insurance, and an array of statement credits. When used right, these benefits can be worth much more than the annual fee.

One of those benefits is a $300 USD annual travel credit that is very easy to get, effectively reducing the annual fee to a more reasonable $250 USD. You don’t need to do anything extreme to receive this benefit either; the first $300 USD per year that you spend on travel is simply erased from your statement.

Chase also has a very broad definition of what it classifies as travel, making it easy to take advantage of this credit (even parking garages count towards it). According to Chase, they classify travel purchases as including:

“airlines, hotels, motels, timeshares, car rental agencies, cruise lines, travel agencies, discount travel sites, campgrounds and operators of passenger trains, buses, taxis, limousines, ferries, toll bridges and highways, and parking lots and garages.”

So, the first $300 USD of purchases you make in any of these categories will be removed from your statement, and after that, you’ll earn 3x points on these purchases.

And that’s just one benefit of the card. When you sign up for this card, you’ll get:

  • 60,000 points (after spending $4,000 in the first 3 months)
  • $300 annual travel credit
  • 3x points on travel (earned after earning your $300 annual travel credit)
  • 3x points on dining, including eligible delivery services and takeout
  • 5x points on flights when booked through Chase
  • 10x points on hotels and rental cars when booked through Chase
  • 10x points on Lyft + 2-year Lyft Pink membership
  • Priority Pass Membership and access to Sapphire Lounges by The Club
  • $100 credit toward Global Entry or TSA Pre-Check every 4 years
  • 1 year of complimentary Instacart+ membership (includes up to $15 in statement credits each month through July 2024)
  • Complimentary DashPass membership (includes $5 in DoorDash credits each month)
  • Travel insurance including emergency medical and dental coverage, emergency evacuation insurance, trip delay coverage, primary car rental insurance, lost luggage reimbursement, and trip cancellation insurance
  • No foreign transaction fees

The card_name also offers the most comprehensive travel insurance out of any credit card and is one of the only ones to include any kind of medical insurance. It’s my top pick as the best credit card for travel insurance .

As a Visa Infinite® card, the Chase Sapphire Reserve’s travel insurance includes the following:

  • Primary car rental insurance up to $75,000 USD
  • Travel accident insurance up to $1,000,000 USD
  • Trip cancelation/interruption coverage up to $10,000 USD per person and $20,000 USD per trip
  • Trip delay coverage of $500 USD after delays of six hours or more
  • Lost luggage coverage up to $3,000 USD
  • $100 per day for up to five days if your baggage is delayed
  • Emergency medical and dental coverage up to $2,500 USD for treatment (minus a $50 USD deductible)
  • Emergency evacuation insurance up to $100,000 USD

While I always recommend purchasing a separate travel insurance policy , having coverage through your credit card is an added benefit that you get at no additional cost.

With this card, you’ll earn Chase Ultimate Rewards® points. You can use those points like you would any other rewards program: to get cash back, book travel directly, or transfer them to travel partners. You can also redeem them for Amazon or Apple purchases, but these are bad redemption values and I would not recommend using points this way.

The easiest option is to redeem your points for travel in the Chase Travel portal, which works like booking through Expedia or any other online travel agency. When you do this, you’re basically using your points as cash, at a value of 1.5 cents per point. So, for example, if you have 50,000 points, they’ll be worth 75,000 points when redeemed through the portal. This is a better value than if you simply redeem your points directly as cash, as you’ll only get a value of 1 cent per point that way.

Using your points in the Chase Travel portal is very straightforward, making it an attractive option for points and miles newbies . If this is the only way that you’ll use your points, then using them is better than letting them sit around!

Just know that there are pros and cons to using the travel portal. Namely, you can usually get more for your points when you transfer them to Chase’s 14 transfer partners (which is what you should be doing with your points).

The ability to transfer to its partners is what makes Chase Ultimate Rewards® points so valuable. You can usually find airline and hotel redemptions where you can get much more than 1.5 cents per point. While the actual value you can get varies greatly based on flight or hotel, a good benchmark is The Points Guy’s monthly valuation chart , which values Chase Ultimate Rewards® points at over 2 cents per point when used as transferable points.

To give a real-life example, the 50,000 points from the example above could be an off-peak, round-trip economy fare from New York to Paris when redeemed through the portal. But if you transfer points to one of Chase’s partner airlines, you can take advantage of flash deals and saver space, potentially finding the same fare for up to 50% less points. Unless it’s a super cheap flight or hotel room (less than $150 USD), I always transfer points to their travel partners, especially when booking business class flights or fancy hotel rooms. You just get more bang for your buck.

Transferring to airline and hotel partners is a bit more work than using the portal, but there are more tools than ever to help you maximize your points. For example, you can use point.me for finding flights with points and Awayz for finding award hotel stays.

Chase’s current transfer partners are:

Airline Transfer Partners:

  • Aer Lingus, AerClub
  • Air Canada Aeroplan
  • British Airways Executive Club
  • Emirates Skywards®
  • Flying Blue AIR FRANCE KLM
  • Iberia Plus
  • JetBlue TrueBlue
  • Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer
  • Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards®
  • United MileagePlus®
  • Virgin Atlantic Flying Club

Hotel Travel Partners:

  • IHG® Rewards Club
  • Marriott Bonvoy®
  • World of Hyatt®

By this point, you might be wondering what makes this card different from its sibling, the Chase Sapphire Preferred . Both cards currently have the same welcome offer: 60,000 points after you spend $4,000 in the first 3 months of account opening. Both also earn 3x points on dining. You also get travel insurance with both cards, though the insurance offered with the Reserve is much more comprehensive.

Given all that, is the Reserve really worth the higher annual fee?

Ultimately, that’s up to you to decide based on your spending, travel habits, and whether you value the Reserve’s extra perks and benefits. But keep in mind that the real difference in cost between these two cards is only $155 USD per year. Sure, that’s considering the $300 USD annual travel credit on the Reserve, but I’m guessing that anyone thinking of getting a travel rewards card spends at least $300 USD on travel per year. And if you do, you’re likely to come out ahead with the Chase Sapphire Reserve due to the ability to earn points faster, use statement credits, and take advantage of luxury perks like airport lounge access.

Here’s a quick cheat sheet of the main differences:

  • Great rewards-earning rates
  • Large welcome offer
  • $300 USD travel credit
  • 14 fantastic transfer partners
  • Excellent travel insurance
  • Statement credits for Global Entry/TSA Precheck (every 4 years)
  • Airport lounge access through Priority Pass membership and access to Sapphire lounges
  • Complimentary memberships (including Lyft Pink, DashPass, InstaCart)
  • Large annual fee ($550 USD per year)
  • $75 USD authorized user fee

This card is best for frequent travelers. If you get this card, you’ll want to be able take advantage of the card’s accelerated earning rates on travel and dining, travel statement credits, and other travel-specific benefits. You’ll get even more out of this card if you value perks like airport lounge access and expediting your airport experience through Global Entry/TSA Precheck, and will transfer your points to one of Chase’s transfer partners.

If you’re only a semi-regular traveler, you might be better served by the Chase Sapphire Preferred. This comprehensive review has everything you need to know about that card .

The card_name is one of the best travel rewards cards out there. It comes with a high welcome offer, lots of perks, and robust points-earning capabilities so that you can quickly stack up valuable Chase Ultimate Rewards points. You get a ton of value with this card. I think it’s worth a spot in the wallet of any frequent traveler.

Are authorized users covered by Chase's credit card travel insurance?

Ethan Steinberg

Update: Some offers mentioned below are no longer available. View the current offers here .

I generally divide my credit card perks into two categories: those such as annual statement credits or lounge access that I actively try and use to enhance my travel experience and those, such as travel insurance and purchase protection, that I hope to never need, but appreciate being able to count on when I do.

But if you have a credit card as an authorized user, are you covered by an issuer's travel insurance policy?

For more TPG news delivered each morning to your inbox, sign up for our daily newsletter.

There are plenty of good reasons to add someone as an authorized user to your card, including sharing benefits with them, earning points on their spending, and even helping your family members build credit , though remember that you'll ultimately be responsible for any purchases they make on the card.

Many cards will let you add authorized users for free, but premium cards often charge a fee. In the case of the Chase Sapphire Reserve, it's $75 per year to add an authorized user.

chase sapphire reserve travel interruption insurance

It's important to understand the terms of your insurance coverage before you need to use it, so you don't make any hasty and expensive mistakes based on incomplete information. As a reminder, the Chase Sapphire Reserve offers the following travel insurance benefits:

  • Trip cancellation/trip interruption insurance
  • Trip delay reimbursement
  • Baggage delay insurance
  • Lost luggage reimbursement

Related: The best credit cards with travel insurance

The exact coverage requirements differ slightly for each policy, but taking the trip cancellation and interruption insurance as an example, here are the covered parties according to Chase's website:

Now there's no differentiation here between primary cardholders and authorized users, so I called Chase and spoke to a benefits administrator to confirm. The good news is that not only are authorized users covered, but in this case, their immediate family members would be as well. "Cardholder" doesn't just mean the primary account holder -- it means any user who's name is embossed on the Chase Sapphire Reserve credit card.

Here are the covered parties for the trip delay reimbursement:

If you add an authorized user outside of your own family, they would receive coverage for their spouse or domestic partner and dependent children under the age of 22, giving them access to some of the most valuable benefits on the Sapphire Reserve at a fraction of the cost.

Related: Credit cards with the greatest value for authorized users

Bottom line

Some people balk at paying the $75 a year fee to add authorized users on the Sapphire Reserve, but when you think about the fact that they earn full travel insurance coverage as if they were the primary cardholders, this becomes a much better value proposition. This benefit has saved me hundreds of dollars over the years, and Chase is known to offer some of the most comprehensive and generous coverage in the industry on its Chase Sapphire Preferred Card and Reserve cards.

I went to Chase's new airport lounge and couldn't believe I could get in for free without the travel credit card

  • I visited the Chase Sapphire Lounge at LaGuardia Airport, which offers meals, drinks, and a spa.
  • The lounge is free for $550-per-year Chase Sapphire Reserve cardholders.
  • But travelers without the card can enter for free once a year with a Priority Pass membership.

Insider Today

I recently went to LaGuardia Airport's Terminal B and stepped into a 21,850-square-foot space that felt like a luxury hotel lobby.

I found cozy seating areas, complimentary meals and drinks, a coworking space, an arcade that felt like a nightclub, a spa offering free facials, and an upstairs mezzanine full of plants.

It was the new Chase Sapphire Lounge , which opened in NYC's LGA and John F. Kennedy International Airports in January. The airport lounge can also be found in Boston and Hong Kong.

The lounge at LGA is open from 4:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. daily and is free for $550-per-year Chase Sapphire Reserve credit cardholders to visit whenever they have a flight departing within three hours.

All they have to do is activate their complimentary Priority Pass airport lounge membership that comes with the credit card.

However, during my tour from general manager Ioannis Tzielekis, I was surprised to learn that travelers can get in for free without the Chase card and access all the same complimentary amenities.

How to get into the airport lounge for free

There are two ways to access the lounge for free without the card, both of which require a boarding pass for a flight up to three hours away.

The easiest way is to travel with a Chase Sapphire Reserve cardholder who is allowed two free guests per visit. Any additional guests cost $27 per person.

For the second option, travelers don't even have to know a Chase cardholder at all.

A Chase Sapphire representative told Business Insider that those who hold a Priority Pass membership without the card can enter for free once a year. Each additional visit costs $75.

The pass is complimentary with various travel credit cards from other banks, or it has a starting rate of $99 for those without any of the partnered card programs, according to the Priority Pass website.

While I was only visiting the lounge for a tour, knowing I could have a pleasant experience before boarding a long flight made me excited for my next trip to the airport— and keen to get a Priority Pass membership.

Why the Chase Sapphire Preferred is Best for All-Purpose Travel in 2024

Many or all of the products featured here are from our partners who compensate us. This influences which products we write about and where and how the product appears on a page. However, this does not influence our evaluations. Our opinions are our own. Here is a list of our partners and here's how we make money .

I’m a Texan, but I live in Colorado. Besides any planned vacations I take, I travel to the Lone Star State a few times a year to visit family and friends, which adds up to a lot of flying. I use multiple credit cards to help me cover the cost of these trips, but the stalwart Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card is easily the most important card in my wallet.

Compared with other cards in its class, this $95 -annual-fee card might not seem that flashy. It won’t help you skip the line at airport security or sip a cocktail in a lounge before your flight. But even though it won’t do much to make you feel fancy at the airport, its suite of perks can help you save significant money on trips and help you cover any mishaps you might encounter along the way.

Here’s why I cast my vote for the card as NerdWallet’s 2024 best credit card for all-purpose travel .

Travel protections can be extremely valuable

First things first: if you’re a traveler, the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card could be worth getting just for the travel protections alone. You’ll get:

Chase Sapphire Preferred Credit Card

Primary rental car insurance.

Trip cancellation/interruption insurance.

Trip delay coverage.

Baggage delay coverage.

The card’s cancellation and delay coverage can come in handy if your flight is significantly delayed or the airline loses your luggage.

But the real star for me is primary rental car insurance. After a single wreck in a rental car caused my car insurance to spike for several years, I’m a big believer in having separate rental car coverage apart from my personal car insurance. But the cost of the protections rental car companies offer can add up quickly.

Meanwhile, the insurance you’ll get with the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card is free and automatically covers your rental car, assuming you use the card to pay for the full amount and decline the rental company’s insurance. Say you rent a car with an insurance fee of $35 a day. It would take just three days to completely cover the cost of the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card ’s annual fee.

Solid rewards rates help me rack up points

Because I live a plane ride away from family, I like to keep a healthy stash of credit card rewards on hand. And the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card gives me multiple ways to top up my reward balance. It earns:

5 points per $1 spent on travel purchased through Chase Ultimate Rewards®.

3 points per $1 spent on dining, select streaming services and online grocery purchases.

2 points per $1 spent on all other travel.

1 point per $1 spent on other purchases.

Shop Through Chase

Besides these regular rewards, cardholders also have access to Shop Through Chase, a shopping portal that offers elevated rewards on certain online merchants. These points are stacked with rewards you’d already earn. For example, as of January 2024, Safeway.com earns 2 points per dollar through Shop Through Chase. Since online grocery purchases already earn 3 points per dollar, you’d earn a total of 5 points per dollar.

» MORE: Chase Ultimate Rewards®: How the program works

Cardholders also receive a 10% point bonus each cardholder anniversary. So if you spent $10,000 per year, you’d earn an additional 1,000 points.

Combine rewards with other Chase cards

If you prefer to keep only one card in your wallet, the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card is a great one-and-done option. But you can also combine your rewards with those from other cards that earn Chase Ultimate Rewards®.

Chase Freedom Flex

I pair my Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card with the Chase Freedom Flex℠ , which earns 5% back on rotating categories (on up to $1,500 each quarter). I usually earn more rewards on my Flex than my Preferred, so this option allows me to maximize my earnings while still taking advantage of the Preferred’s superior redemption options.

How redeeming points helped me celebrate the World Series

Growing up, I spent my summers watching Texas Rangers games with my family. When we weren’t at the game, we watched it on TV or listened on the radio. Now that I'm living out of state, I usually listen to the radio broadcast alone in my Colorado apartment. But when the Rangers clinched a 2023 playoff spot, I knew if they made it to the World Series I needed to at least watch with my family if I couldn't make it to the games.

I already had a planned trip to Texas for a wedding the week after the World Series. But, call it baseball superstition or maybe heartbreak from loving a team that hadn’t ever won a championship, I couldn’t bring myself to move my flight up until I knew my team was headed to the Fall Classic.

But last-minute ticket prices are not so great for my wallet. Thankfully, I was able to redeem Chase Ultimate Rewards® points, not only to be in Texas during the World Series, but also to take a trip to Florida with my sister a few weeks earlier to watch our team play in the Wild Card round.

Transferring my points helped me get outsize value

My favorite way to redeem rewards is to transfer them to one of Chase’s travel partners , which includes multiple airline and hotel loyalty programs. Rewards transfer at a 1:1 ratio, and smart redemptions can often give you more value for your points.

You can transfer Chase Ultimate Rewards® to a number of U.S.-based airlines, including United, JetBlue and Southwest, plus a number of U.S.-based hotels. But I normally get the most value out of the issuers’ international airlines — even for domestic travel. My usual go-to's are British Airways and Air Canada , because you can often use rewards to book flights for fewer miles on alliance partners American Airlines and United Airlines, respectively.

Aer Lingus (1:1 ratio).

Air Canada (1:1 ratio).

Air France-KLM (1:1 ratio).

British Airways (1:1 ratio).

Emirates (1:1 ratio).

Iberia (1:1 ratio).

JetBlue (1:1 ratio).

Singapore (1:1 ratio).

Southwest (1:1 ratio).

United (1:1 ratio).

Virgin Atlantic (1:1 ratio).

Hyatt (1:1 ratio).

InterContinental Hotels Group (1:1 ratio).

Marriott (1:1 ratio).

It’s these transfers that helped my sister and me book multiple last-minute flights to watch the Rangers play. Between our trip to Florida and my additional flight to Texas, we took a total of five last-minute flights within a month. We were able to snag great redemption rates by transferring Chase points on three of them:

My sister’s flight from Tampa to Dallas: 9,000 British Airways Avios rewards.

My flight from Tampa to Denver: 12,500 Air Canada Aeroplan miles.

My flight from Denver to Dallas: 10,000 Air Canada Aeroplan miles.

For reference: Booking last-minute flights with miles on United would generally cost me around 15,000 miles one-way. (Note that each airline's program charges varying taxes and fees in addition to the required miles.)

Scoring great deals by transferring points isn't always a guarantee. My Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card couldn't, for instance, conjure up an affordable flight to Phoenix that would have let me watch my team win the World Series in person. But it did help me make it home in time to catch the Rangers' victory from the couch with my family and pizza, without blowing my budget.
