David Strassman Brings THE CHOCOLATE DIET to Melbourne This Month
Performances are 15-20th November.
International comedy star, David Strassman , is returning to Melbourne with his show, The Chocolate Diet , performing at the Athenaeum Theatre from 15-20th November.
The Chocolate Diet is a hilarious look at our obsession with sweets and lollies, a send up of our failed diets, and Ted E. Bare's drama with his self-image and addiction to chocolate. The problem is getting worse, especially with the sneaky and evil Chuck Wood leaving tempting donuts around. Meanwhile, Chuck has his own amusing personal drama, a sneaking suspicion that he was carved out of the wrong piece of wood.
Strassman is a tour de force in the world of ventriloquism. From London to New York, Strassman's comic genius has shocked, surprised and made audiences laugh the world over. Just Google and YouTube his name and you will see his immense body of comedy shows and twisted videos.
Strassman said, "I love making audiences laugh and this new show, The Chocolate Diet, is probably my funniest to date. It's also quite delicious, and watch out, it's fattening too!"
David Strassman will also be partnering with the HeartKids to hold a fundraiser and live auction after his hilarious new show, The Chocolate Diet, on Tuesday 15 November, with 50% of all proceeds going to the organisation. David is a proud ambassador for HeartKids, the only national not-for-profit solely focused on supporting and advocating for all people impacted by childhood heart disease.

David Strassman’s The Chocolate Diet (Athenaeum Theatre) – theatre review
He calls Melbourne’s Athenaeum Theatre his second home and why wouldn’t he because audiences love him here every time he tours. Put simply, David Strassman is in a stratosphere all his own when it comes to ventriloquism. In his hands and with his vocalisation, his puppets come to life. They are naïve, antagonistic, impudent and oh so funny. Strassman is a consummate entertainer that interacts freely and easily with the crowds that flock to his shows. While Ted E. Bare is his most popular creation and the undoubted star of The Chocolate Diet, Strassman also tees off with other characters. I refer to Chuck Wood, Grandpa Fred, Sid Beaverman, Kevin, the Alien and Buttons, the Clown.
Strassman questions Ted E. about the wisdom of his all-chocolate diet – which the latter loves – and encourages balance. Then through four vignettes over the two acts that constitute the show we see how that plays out. The set is a testament to Ted E’s chocolate addiction, with the added “attraction” of a fried food backdrop (mind you, that changes from time to time). Strassman and Ted E. are a wonderful, warm and inviting combination. The jokes, which often result in unbridled laughter from the audience, come thick and fast. Seamlessly inserting references to Melbourne suburbs and Victorian regional towns into his overall performance endears Strassman to us even more.
While Ted E. tops and tails the production, it is the evil, sarcastic and selfish Chuck Wood that baits from the sidelines. And then he “enters”, wearing a blonde wig. Chuck is undergoing an identity crisis and the foul-mouthed puppet that seems to get his jollies by denouncing Strassman has the comedian perplexed. Grandpa Fred doesn’t mind dropping an epithet or two either. He is tripping from a combination of Panadol laced with acid, heroin and other drugs. He also enjoys a belly laugh and has a tendency to nod off mid-sentence. Sid Beaverman is stuck in a vortex of old jokes and puns, which come tumbling out at speed.
After interval, courtesy of an impressive lit up globe, Kevin, the Alien appears and tells us what is wrong with the world. And then Buttons, the Clown emerges from a toy box much worse for wear. He is shickered. Sex and politics are comfortable risqué terrain for Strassman, who also manages to work virtual assistants Siri and Alexa into his routine. And The Chocolate Diet also has song – including a duet – as part of the repertoire, as all his characters want to “open their lungs”, despite Strassman’s protestations.
With two 45-minute brackets, The Chocolate Diet is a fun-filled cavalcade of comedy that is bound to put a smile on your face. It is playing at the Athenaeum Theatre until 20 th November, 2022. American ventriloquist David Strassman expresses his love for Australia and the power of the human voice (with occasional interruptions from sidekicks Chuck Wood and Ted E Bare). David’s musical selections range from baroque composer Antonio Vivaldi to the last song ever performed in concert by Pink Floyd.
He told stories about touring Europe with a choir, rediscovering the Beatles and performing in comedy clubs with Jerry Seinfeld. Strassman is in Australia performing a new show called The Chocolate Diet .

David Strassman in The Chocolate Diet – Comedy Review
I remember as a kid, staying up late on a Saturday night watching Hey Hey it’s Saturday with the family. One evening they had a guest appearance of a ventriloquist from America, David Strassman.
Although, at the time, it was just a guy and a puppet that talked, and I was maybe 10 years old, I was so captivated. As I grew up, I would always hear about David Strassman touring Australia, yet I somehow always missed his shows. Well, that changed last night when I finally got to see this legend perform on stage on Tuesday November 15th at Melbourne’s Athenaeum Theatre! But did he live up the expectations I set as a child?
David Strassman in the Chocolate Diet is a show centred around one of his many characters, Ted E. Bare and his struggles with the love of chocolate, all things sweet, and going on a diet. The moment the show began and Ted E. Bare was brought out, I found myself smiling from ear to ear, reminiscing of the times I saw him on TV as a kid, and I was loving every moment.
Ted E. Bare ’s persona is so sweet, lovable, and wholesome. Just trying to be the best version of himself. I found myself feeling empathetic towards his battle of trying to be healthy, yet loving all the good things.
The show took a slight dive when Chuck Wood came out on stage. Perhaps it was the mood of the room and the lack of reception that Chuck received for his jokes, but I just wasn’t feeling it. The topics of choice for Chuck ’s segment seemed to fall flat and I found myself waiting for the next part of the show to kick in. I could also tell that Strassman was feeling the same by the body language and the interactions he was having with Chuck . Even to the point of calling out the lack of laughter from the audience. But being the true professional he is, Strassman powered through and made the most of what he was getting back. I really admired that.
Aside from the Strassman staples of Ted E. Bare and Chuck Wood , we were also treated to an appearance from Grandpa Fred , Ted E. Bare ’s grandfather who had some questionable lifestyle choices. Buttons the Clown , an alcoholic clown that apparently even surprised Strassman with a brand-new emotional response that has never happened before. Kevin , the alien sharing that he has no desire to invade Earth because we have already screwed it up, not being afraid to be blunt to the audience about the future of the planet. Last but not least, the cute and comedic Sid Beaverman with a classic stand up set of ‘dad jokes’. Out of all the additional characters, Buttons the Clown and Sid Beaverman were the highlights. I do love a good dad joke and those that laughed along during his set are my kind of people. Of course, Ted E. Bare is still the fan favourite.
One thing that really surprised me when the show started was that it is clearly only one person up on that stage. Yet, with the puppet next to him, Strassman effortlessly creates the illusion that there are two individuals having a conversation.
Ventriloquism is not a simple artform, and even for the seasoned professional like Strassman , there are still words and phrases that are almost impossible to pull off. Strassman cleverly disguises these challenges within the character of the puppet he is performing with. It might be a deliberate mispronunciation of the word or saying it in another way, only to have Strassman correct the words of the character that is generally met with “Yes, that too” as a response. I was amazed by how fluid the conversations were and even more impressed by Strassman ’s uncanny ability to pull off sound effects such as a wheezing laugh, a hiccup, animal noises, and even stuttering. All expertly executed without the movement of his own mouth.
Technical ability aside, David Strassman is an incredibly clever and quick-witted comedian. About ten minutes into the Ted E. Bare part of the set, some patrons arrived late. Arriving late at a comedy show is a big no-no, especially if you are sitting down at the front. Mid conversation Ted just stopped talking and glared down into the audience. It wasn’t just Strassman heckling the latecomers, but Ted also got in on the action. Even when Strassman stumbled on lines or lost his place in the show due to an audience interaction, he was able to recover quickly and get back into a rhythm.
Having toured here for decades, Melbourne is like a second home to Strassman . It was refreshing to hear nods to local places and stereotypes as part of his show, and how much he genuinely understood and loved Australia. All of this is proof that Strassman’s crowd-work is flawless and a talent that any comedian would be envious of.
If the wholesome moments of the performance were not already enough, last nights show was also a charity performance with proceeds going to Heart Kids . A charity that raises funds for children fighting heart disease. At the end of the performance, Strassman introduced the charity organisation and stated that with ticket sales alone, we had already raised $10,000 for Heart Kids .
To add to it, Strassman held an auction where he sold several plush versions of Ted E. Bare , each with a red heart drawn on his chest and a signed tag. Each purchase also included a meet and greet with a photo at the end of the auction. I had a few bids myself but was quickly out-bid. Strassman was blown away by the generosity of the audience and I left the venue with my heart so full. It’s so wonderful seeing people amazing in their craft, but to use their talents for good is something else. I even purchased my own giant Ted E. Bare on my way out.
Overall, the positives were overwhelming and made for a fun and enjoyable evening. The jokes that fell flat were quickly forgotten about, the wholesome and hilarious moments live on. I was so glad that I finally got to see this legendary comedic icon up on stage in The Chocolate Diet , and I would happily catch him on his next Australian tour.
David Strassman in the Chocolate Diet is now playing at Melbourne’s Athenaeum Theatre until this Sunday the 20 th of November and continues in Adelaide from the 29 th of November until the 4 th of December. Just a Few of the Biggest Concert Tours of 2024, from Olivia Rodrigo to Bad Bunny
Posted: April 13, 2024 | Last updated: April 13, 2024
Listening to your favorite musician at home is fun, but there's nothing quite like the experience of singing along with them, and tons of more fans, live. And as luck would have it, 2024 is shaping up to be a massive year for some of the world's top musical acts, so chances are your favorite performer might be stopping at a city near you soon.
Ahead, we rounded up some of the biggest concert tours of 2024, ranging from Taylor Swift's mega-popular Eras Tour to Drake and J. Cole's exciting It's All A Blur Tour - Big as the What?—set to kick off this winter. You can also expect tour dates from classic icons like Stevie Nicks, Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen, and more.
1) Taylor Swift
Undoubtedly one of the biggest concert tours ever, Taylor Swift's Eras Tour will continue right through 2024. The international leg of the tour kicked off in Japan, where she played four shows in Tokyo. She'll also stop in Melbourne, Singapore, Paris, Madrid, London, Milan, and more before returning to the States to play in the fall.
There's nothing like seeing T. Swift IRL, but don't fret if you're unable to nab tickets—the Eras Tour movie is now available to stream from the comfort of your home.
2) Olivia Rodrigo
This is not a drill—"Drivers License" singer Olivia Rodrigo will be hitting the road on tour starting at the end of February. The Guts World Tour runs from February through mid-August and has dates in Nashville, Toronto, Chicago, and New York City, among others. Even cooler? Rodrigo will have a stacked list of special guests—like PinkPantheress, Remi Wolf, The Breeders, and Chappell Roan—with her.
3) Red Hot Chili Peppers
Did you hear the good news? The Red Hot Chili Peppers have extended their global tour through summer 2024. The buzzy stadium tour, which kicked off in June 2022, will now run until July 2024 and bring the California-based band to places like Los Angeles, Tampa, Toronto, and Salt Lake City.
4) Bad Bunny
It's fitting that "Monaco" rapper Bad Bunny titled his tour Most Wanted —it's slated to be one of the year's hottest tours. Planned to help promote his latest studio album, Nadie Sabe Lo Que Va a Pasar Mañana , Most Wanted will kick off in Salt Lake City on February 21 and run through May 26.
5) Billy Joel
If you haven't yet seen Billy Joel perform live, there's still time! The Piano Man has added more tour dates to his schedule, stopping in cities like Tampa, New York, Denver, and St. Louis this year. Even more exciting? He'll share the stage with fellow iconic performers Sting and Stevie Nicks for some of these dates.
Mitski recently announced that she's expanding her North American tour dates , and we couldn't be more excited. The months-long tour, which supports her 2023 studio album The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We, has a long list of stops, including Miami Beach, Philadelphia, Brooklyn, and Paris.
There's nothing quite like a Madonna concert, that's for sure. The singer's Celebration Tour , which started last October, continues straight through the spring with dates in Seattle, San Francisco, Mexico City, and more. Besides her eye-catching sets, chart-topping songs, and impressive choreography, concertgoers also get a glimpse of the performer's fantastic costumes, which include looks from Versace and Jean Paul Gaultier.
8) Bleachers
The New Jersey-founded rock band, which is fronted by Jack Antonoff—known for producing albums for top acts like Taylor Swift, Lorde, and Lana Del Rey—not only has announced a new album but a new tour , too. The tour will start in the UK in March, ending fittingly in the band's home state of New Jersey in mid-June. Check out their newly released music video for "Tiny Moves" if you need a Bleachers fix in the meantime.
9) Nicki Minaj
Nicki fans rejoice: the rapper and singer might be coming to a city near you soon as part of her Pink Friday 2 World Tour. The massive tour will include performances in Brooklyn, Oakland, and Baltimore, with stops at Dreamville Festival and Rolling Loud California along the way.
10) Blink 182
Live out all of your nineties and early aughts pop-punk dreams with one of Blink 182's One More Time Tour dates. The tour, which supports the band's ninth studio album, One More Time..., will bring the trio to cities all over the globe, including Sydney, Santiago, Portland, and Boston. The tour's supporting act is Pierce the Veil, which is also worth checking out.
11) Stevie Nicks
The oh-so-magical Stevie Nicks continues her touring streak with a bunch of 2024 concert dates . Set to begin in Atlantic City, NJ on February 10, Nicks will visit a dozen cities throughout the U.S. this year, such as New Orleans, Omaha, and Chicago. "Let's keep this party going in 2024," the singer-songwriter posted on her Instagram in September to announce the newly added tour dates.
12) The 1975
The 1975 is showing no signs of slowing down. The British band, famous for hits like "Somebody Else" and "Robbers," has extended their 2023 tour through 2024. Titled Still...At Their Very Best , the 22-date tour will open in Glasgow on February 8 and conclude in Amsterdam on March 24.
13) Drake and J. Cole
Rap greats Drake and J. Cole come together for the It's All a Blur Tour – Big As the What? which is guaranteed to be a good time. Drake, fresh off his 2023 It's All a Blur tour with 21 Savage, is set to hit dozens of cities starting in February, many of which J. Cole will also be in tow for. Scoop up tickets ASAP, as Drake's shows are known to sell out.
14) Janet Jackson
Superstar Janet Jackson is also extending her 2023 tour, Together Again , into 2024 with dates in Anaheim, Austin, New Orleans, and Hartford. Even cooler? Jackson's supporting act is the 2000s southern rap legend Nelly.
15) Rolling Stones
If you've ever dreamed of seeing the Rolling Stones perform live in person, now's your chance. The iconic rockers, who released their studio album Hackney Diamonds this past fall, are returning on the road for a 16-date tour with shows throughout the United States and Canada. Concertgoers can expect a mix of new tunes and Stones classics.
16) Bruce Springsteen
Famous for countless listenable hits like "Born to Run" and "Glory Days," Bruce Springsteen is set to embark on a massive world tour this year with his band, The E Street Band. The much-anticipated tour will take the Boss and his crew to cities such as Phoenix, San Diego, Dublin, and Madrid, from March through November.
17) John Mayer
Be sure to catch John Mayer's solo tour this year, which will bring the guitarist and crooner to cities throughout Europe. This leg, an extension of his popular 2023 solo tour, will kick off in Stockholm on March 13 and finish in Dublin on March 29.
18) Shania Twain
Okay, this one is technically a residency , but we're excited nonetheless. Shania Twain, most known for her incredible outfits (her hooded leopard print look, anyone?) and hits like "Man! I Feel Like a Woman!" is setting up shop in Vegas starting May 10. Twain's residency will take place at the Bakkt Theater at Planet Hollywood on and off throughout December 2024.
All good things must come to an end. The Eagles, known for "Hotel California" and other amazing rock songs, began their final concert tour this winter. It launched in Phoenix on January 20, with March 16 as its last date in the United States. Eagles fans won't want to miss this one.
20) Alanis Morisette: The Triple Moon Tour
Alanis Morisette joins forces with Joan Jett and the Blackhearts for their 2024 Triple Moon Tour , which has dates in North America and Canada. This tour is a great one to catch this summer, as it's slated to run from June through August.
