15 Best Things to Do in Jacksonville, Florida, According to Locals

From beautiful beaches to interesting museums, Jacksonville, Florida, has something for everyone.

Jessica Poitevien is an international storyteller and regular contributor to Travel + Leisure.

Valerie de Leon/Travel + Leisure

Planning a Florida getaway often conjures thoughts of sunbathing in Fort Lauderdale, dancing the night away in Miami, and seeking thrills at one of Orlando’s theme parks. And while all of these images are accurate — and great ideas for any vacation — there’s so much more to the Sunshine State.

If you’re looking to go beyond the usual tourist hot spots and still get a taste of the best that Florida has to offer, look no further than Jacksonville. Located in the northeastern part of the state, Jacksonville is home to 22 miles of beaches, world-class museums, and more — not to mention a country flair that locals are proud of.

To help plan your trip to this Florida gem, we spoke to locals who gave us the lowdown on the best things to do in Jacksonville. Read on for their tips on where to go, what to do, and what to see so you can make the most of your trip.

Spend the day at Jacksonville Beach.

Jackson Vance/Travel + Leisure

It wouldn’t be a Florida vacation without a visit to the beach , and Jacksonville has plenty of ways for visitors to enjoy the coastline, thanks to its year-round sunshine. Walk along the “sandy highway” during low tide, take a dip in the Atlantic, or try your hand at several other recreational activities like kayaking, surfing, paddleboarding, and fishing from the pier. You can also “walk down memory lane at Beaches Museum to remember how Jacksonville’s beaches got to where they are now,” says Curt DeWitt, owner and operator of Beach Life Rentals and Salt Air Inn & Suites .

Explore the Jacksonville-Baldwin Rail Trail.

Hike, bike, or ride along what was once part of a CSX railway line and now showcases a different, more forested side of Jacksonville’s natural beauty. The 14.5-mile trail has a multiuse asphalt path smooth enough for skating and cycling, along with a parallel unpaved path for off-road biking and horseback riding. “It's a great place to see the ‘country’ side of Jacksonville and Florida,” says DeWitt.

Hang with big cats at Catty Shack Ranch Wildlife Sanctuary.

Animal lovers shouldn’t miss a trip to this somewhat hidden gem in Jacksonville. Providing a safe haven for big cats who may have been mistreated or have nowhere else to go, Catty Shack Ranch is home to a large variety of animals, including bobcats, foxes, leopards, tigers, and lions. “It's a fun place to learn about how some ‘pets’ can be mistreated, and how a sanctuary can help provide a comfortable, safe space for the animals to live with each other,” says DeWitt. “They do not allow visitors all the time … so it does not overstimulate the animals and treat them like they are in a zoo.”

Find healing at Auntie Peaches.

“A mystical apothecary with a vibe both earthy and ethereal, Auntie Peaches is a hidden gem in historic Springfield,” says Ernest White II, who grew up in Jacksonville and is the executive producer and presenter of travel docuseries Fly Brother with Ernest White II . “Come here for traditional African herbal and natural medicines, scented candles and aromatic teas, and incredible stories about African American life from Jacksonville and around Florida.”

Come Along on T+L’s Top U.S. Adventures

Have a beach picnic at huguenot memorial park..

Valerie de Leon/Travel + Leisure

“I grew up going to this sandy strand north of the mouth of the St. Johns River. The long, wide beach in this public park is a great place to splash in the surf and watch the ships sail in and out of the river on the other side of the jetty,” says White II. Visitors are also allowed to drive down onto the beach to set up their barbecue or picnic for the day. While there, be sure to look for the historic marker that commemorates the landing of the French Huguenots on May 1, 1562.

Enjoy a family-friendly day at Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens.

You can easily spend the entire day at Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens , gawking at the 2,000-plus creatures and 1,000 varieties of plants. Feed the animals at the Giraffe Overlook, watch for adorable floating otters at the Wild Florida exhibit, and get a unique view of tigers roaming above your head at the Land of the Tiger exhibit. There’s something to keep both adults and children entertained.

Get a dose of art and culture at Florida Theatre.

Douglas Sacha/Getty Images

For nearly 100 years, the Florida Theatre has served as a beacon of entertainment. Originally opened as a movie theater, the venue, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, now hosts hundreds of events per year, from ballet and opera performances to a variety of musical concerts.

Admire the masterpieces at Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens.

As the largest fine arts museum in northeast Florida, the Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens has a collection of nearly 5,000 pieces spanning several centuries, cultures, and continents. The beauty continues in the museum’s historic and lush 2.5-acre garden. “I love the Cummer because you can stroll through the serene gardens, marvel at ancient artifacts, and admire European and American masterpieces all under one roof,” says Burton.

Go shopping at Riverside Arts Market.

Open every Saturday, rain or shine, the Riverside Arts Market “ is an embodiment of Jacksonville's artistic soul,” says Natasha Burton, head chef, founder, and owner of Mixed Fillings Pie Shop . With more than 100 vendors, you’ll find art, handmade jewelry, beauty products, local farmers' produce, food trucks, and more. “It's a weekend must-do for anyone craving a dose of local flavor, and the location can't be matched,” Burton adds.

Learn about Jacksonville’s Black history.

The role of Black residents throughout Jacksonville’s fascinating history is often overlooked, but Explore Jax Core is trying to change that with its Black heritage tours. The company offers a general history tour, as well as other options focused on architecture or murals and mosaics. “I vouch for Explore Jax Core’s Black History tours because they’re not just tours,” says Burton. “They’re eye-opening experiences that delve into the soul of Jacksonville. They bring to life stories that often remain untold, celebrating the resilience, triumphs, and contributions of the Black community.”

Explore a darker side of history at Kingsley Plantation.

Like many destinations in the South, Jacksonville has a complicated history, and nowhere is this more apparent than at Kingsley Plantation . Head to this site to learn about the 1814 plantation house and the people who lived there — both enslaved Africans and plantation owners. You can take a self-guided audio tour, but for a deeper dive into its history, book a tour with a park ranger.

Enjoy the outdoors at Kathryn Abbey Hanna Park.

This oceanfront city park has a bit of everything for outdoor enthusiasts: 1.5 miles of beautiful beaches, more than 20 miles of hiking and biking trails, campgrounds and cabins, an expansive lake, picnic shelters, equipment rentals for kayaking, and more. This park is also a top spot for surfing. Beyond its recreational activities, Hanna Park is significant as it was once Manhattan Beach, the first African American beach resort in Florida.

Stroll along St. Johns River.

Be sure to enjoy the views of the mighty St. Johns River along the Northbank Riverwalk (two miles) or Southbank Riverwalk (1.25 miles). These concrete pathways are ideal for going on a walk or jog, relaxing on the benches, or launching a kayak from one of the designated areas. “Enjoy the art and murals along the way and hopefully catch a glimpse of the river dolphins, a hybrid salt and freshwater dolphin only found in the St. Johns River,” recommends Katie Mitura, chief marketing officer at Visit Jacksonville.

Catch a concert at the Ritz Theatre and Museum.

Located in the historic neighborhood of LaVilla, the Ritz Theatre and Museum showcases the Black history and culture of Jacksonville in an area that was a hot spot for Black entertainment, nightlife, and music from the 1920s to 1960s. Explore the museum’s many galleries and keep an eye on the event calendar to catch a concert in the beautiful 400-seat theater.

Marvel at the stars at the Museum of Science & History.

With the goal of fostering lifelong learning, Jacksonville’s Museum of Science & History has a wide range of interactive exhibits, teaching about health and the human body, coastal animals in northeast Florida, diverse energy sources, and the lives of Jacksonville’s first Native Americans. The crowning jewel of the museum is its planetarium. As one of the largest single-lens planetariums in the U.S., you can easily explore the wonders of the universe from the comfort of planet Earth.

Florida's Beach Haven: The Ultimate Travel Guide To Jacksonville & Things To Do

Jacksonville, Florida's beaches attract visitors most of the year thanks to the city's warm weather, but there's more to see and do.

Quick Links

Best time to visit jacksonville, best ways to get around jacksonville, where to eat in jacksonville, top things to do in jacksonville, florida, 5 best beaches in jacksonville, guide to popular neighborhoods in jacksonville, where to stay in jacksonville, tips to know, how to spend the perfect day in jacksonville.

Seated on the northeastern end of Florida, Jacksonville enjoys an idyllic location next to the Atlantic Ocean that grants the city a whopping 22 miles (35 km) of beach real estate . Jax, as the locals refer to it, is an eclectic city with an unmistakable southern charm and a touch of Floridian quirkiness.

Since this is a beach haven, the beachside allure is certainly the main reason why visitors love Jacksonville. However, there are numerous other things to do. This ultimate travel guide to Jacksonville has everything that a traveler would need to know about Florida’s most populous city, from the best time to visit, to the best beaches and everything in between.

A view of Jacksonville

There are two groups of crowds that troop to Jacksonville at different times: the spring breakers in March and the summer crowds from June to August.

These crowds fill up the beaches and hotel rooms, pushing prices up. It’s also difficult to fully enjoy the beauty of Jacksonville when the beaches are full.

So, the best times to visit Jacksonville are in April and May, right after the spring breakers have left and just before the summer vacationers arrive.

The autumn months from September to November are also good times to visit since the summer crowds have left, prices have dropped, and the weather is still pleasant.

Jacksonville JTA skyway train

Jacksonville is a large city, so the most convenient way to get around is by car. Here’s a look at the different options for traveling in Jacksonville, that tourists have.

This is the best way to get around Jacksonville because it gives travelers the freedom to visit most of the city. Sadly, because this is a populous city, there’s always going to be heavy traffic, especially on roads leading to the beach.

Still, getting a car is more convenient than using the public transport options, which don’t operate all day, every day.

Public Transport

This option is best for travelers who are on a tight budget. Thankfully, Jacksonville has several public transport options operated by the Jacksonville Transport Authority (JTA), with the lowest bus fare costing $1.75.

There’s the Skyway train, which ferries people for free within the downtown area. Tourists exploring downtown Jacksonville can take advantage of the Skyway, which runs from 6 am to 9 pm, Mondays to Fridays.

JTA also operates buses from downtown to the greater Jacksonville area. Travelers can buy single-ride or multi-day tickets, and this is done via the MyJTA mobile app .

Travelers can also opt to buy the STAR card, which offers unlimited rides for a specific period once loaded. For instance, for 7 days of unlimited rides, travelers will pay $20.

Uber and Lyft cabs are common in Jacksonville and are reliable ways to get around Jacksonville. However, travelers who intend to move longer distances are likely to be put off by their higher prices. These are best for shorter trips.

Breakfast: Maple Street Biscuit Company

Waffles with blueberries, strawberries, and whipped cream.

Maple Street Biscuit Company opens every day at 7 am, just in time for the breakfast crowd. Patrons troop to this joint to enjoy their trademark delectable biscuit sandwiches that are made fresh every day.

They also serve yummy waffles and classic breakfast food like bacon and eggs. This is one of the best breakfast places in Jacksonville.

Eating a beautiful salmon meal with lemon and white wine

Julington Creek Fish Camp offers visitors a meal with a view thanks to its waterside location. Their claim to fame is their seafood, which they have given a southern twist.

For instance, there’s a teriyaki-glazed salmon burger that would make for a filling lunch meal. Julington also serves pan-seared cod, deviled crab, and scallops among other dishes.

Their dessert menu is also worth trying out.

Where To Eat And Drink In Jacksonville

  • Treat Yourself
  • Outdoor Activities

Joe Daniel Price/Getty Images

Comprising 840 square miles in northeast Florida, Jacksonville is the largest city in the continental U.S. (four other cities are larger, but they are all in Alaska). This spaciousness gives rise to the city’s distinct features across neighborhoods, from the collective beaches on the Atlantic Coast to the historic downtown area sliced by the St. Johns River. Jacksonville’s energy is captured in the pride that you’ll see while traveling around the city and hear at Jaguars football games when fans shout their catchphrase “Duuuval!”

If you’re heading to Jax, read on for our best tips for what to see, do, and eat while you’re in town.

Order up a Squawking Goat at Maple Street Biscuit

Start your day at a Jacksonville breakfast standby: Maple Street Biscuit, which started right here in 2012 and has since expanded into seven states. The Squawking Goat, a buttery biscuit sandwich made with a fried chicken patty, slab of goat cheese, and a generous drizzle of sweet-and-sour pepper jelly, remains popular after being featured on Food Network in 2016. maplestreetbiscuits.com , multiple locations

Celebrate Taco Tuesday at Oaxaca Club

This new Jacksonville Beach restaurant, which pays homage to Oaxacan cuisine with seasonal items like roasted oysters, fresh aguachile made from local fish, and wild mushroom pozole, is a great place to visit on a Tuesday, where you can sample the taco menu for a discounted price. We enjoyed the al pastor, prepared with marinated pork, fresh pineapple, and drizzle of chile piquin salsa. theoaxacaclub.com , 131 1st. Ave. N, Jacksonville Beach, FL 32250

Cozy in for Date Night at Orsay

Orsay, a cozy restaurant that embodies unfussy, rustic French cuisine in Jax’s Riverside/Avondale Historic District, serves a menu where steak frites are celebrated equally to classics like bouillabaisse and beef stroganoff.

Sample Instagrammable Asian Snacks on Beach Boulevard

Jacksonville’s rich cultural diversity is reflected in the myriad cuisine options throughout the city, and a fun way to experience this is on Beach Boulevard on a self-styled boba tea and ice cream crawl. OMG Cafe & Tea serves up adorable (and realistic) shar pei puppy-shaped ice creams, while just across the street Mumuyi Bakery ’s delicate crepe cakes in flavors like durian and matcha, plus their boba tea topped with sea salt cheese foam have earned something of a cult following.

Order Shrimp and Grits at Bellwether

Whether you’re dining out for breakfast, lunch, or dinner, shrimp and grits always hit the spot. At this downtown local hangout, the shrimp are perfectly seasoned atop a bed of creamy grits—true Southern comfort food at its finest.

Create Your Own Chocolate Bar at Sweet Pete’s

A visit to the 100-year-old mansion that houses Sweet Pete’s is a must on any trip to downtown Jacksonville. You can book a tour of the production facilities and also create your very own signature chocolate bar with your choice of toppings for $6. Have a Drink at a Legendary Bar

For a tipple with a side of history, head to Pete’s Bar at Beaches Town Center. The first bar to open in Duval County following Prohibition in 1933, the bar’s original owner sold bootleg hooch from a nearby store. Author John Grisham wrote his book, “The Brethren,” while stationed here, and the bar has hosted other famous patrons, as well, including Ernest Hemingway.

The Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens The Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens

The Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens makes an excellent addition to the historic Riverside neighborhood, sitting just southwest of downtown Jacksonville. Established in 1958, this beautiful art museum has made a mission out of art education and community enhancement. In addition to housing impressive exhibits, the museum offers seminars and lecture series while working with the Beaches Rotaract and other nonprofit groups on additional programs for kids.

But back to the art: This institution houses more than 5,000 works from various artists, including Mildred Thompson, Peter Paul Rubens and Norman Rockwell. You can also check out the current exhibitions and special collections. While here, make time for a stroll through the gardens, which feature fountains, reflecting pools and a canopy created by towering old oak trees. You can also enjoy lunch from the cafe either indoors, on the patio or in the gardens. And on warm Friday evenings, order a picnic tote from the cafe and bring a blanket to have dinner in the garden outside.

Little Talbot Island State Park Little Talbot Island State Park

If you've come to northeast Florida to take advantage of the warm weather and Atlantic coast, consider a visit to Little Talbot Island State Park. Catching the ocean waves about 25 miles northeast of downtown Jacksonville, Little Talbot Island boasts more than 5 miles of shoreline and lacks the crowds of other Florida beach destinations.

But don't just come here to lounge along the sand. As one of the few undeveloped barrier islands remaining along the state's northeast coast, Little Talbot Island encompasses a variety of habitats – from coastal salt marshes to sand dunes – that house a wide array of animal species. Wildlife-watchers may catch a glimpse of gopher tortoises, marsh rabbits, white-tailed deer and even bobcats, which you're more likely to see at dawn and dusk.

Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens

Sitting on the edge of the Trout River, about 7 miles north of downtown Jacksonville, the Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens is a must if you're visiting the city with kids. This 115-acre facility is the only walking safari in northeast Florida; you are invited to wander the grounds, where you'll find opportunities to get up close and personal (even eye-to-eye) with animals like giraffes in their habitat, the Giraffe Overlook. Then look for western lowland gorillas in the African Forest exhibit, Malayan and Sumatran tigers in the Land of the Tiger and African elephants in the Africa Loop. The sprawling grounds also house Stingray Bay (where you can pet and feed stingrays) and the ever-popular 2.5-acre Play Park and Splash Ground, where children can play, view more animals (like penguins and Nigerian Dwarf goats) and cool off after a day in the Florida heat. In all, more than 2,000 animals and 1,000 plants call the zoo home.

The zoo also offers unique behind-the-scenes experiences where you can get up close to the African elephants and meet the animal care specialists who train them. There are also opportunities to feed the penguins, brush a Warty pig or learn about the rehabilitation and conservation of Florida's gentle giants, the manatees. Reservations are required for these offerings and there is an additional charge.

Boneyard Beach at Big Talbot Island State Park Boneyard Beach at Big Talbot Island State Park

Situated within Big Talbot Island State Park and the federally protected Timucuan Ecological and Historical Preserve, Boneyard Beach is a favorite destination for visitors who come to see the giant pieces of sun- and salt-bleached driftwood and 30-foot-high dunes along Northeast Florida's coast. This 3-mile stretch of shoreline on Nassau Sound is important to the local ecosystem as the pieces of fallen and weathered trees prevent further erosion of the beach and protect the interior landscape from harsh winds and flooding, including the salt marshes and nearby cities and towns.

Past visitors say it's a quiet, primitive beach and that it's incredible to see the beauty of Mother Nature at work.

This bit of shoreline offers some of the best surfing conditions in northeast Florida; if you're a surfing novice, you can take advantage of the park's 60-acre lake, which is great for fishing, kayaks, pedal boats and canoes. But according to recent visitors, these aren't the only reasons to visit the park. Past travelers praised the variety of wildlife-watching opportunities, the 20-plus miles of biking and hiking trails and the excellent camping facilities. Some also say it's a beautiful park that's not crowded and a hidden gem for outdoor lovers.

Kathryn Abbey Hanna Park makes a great spot for a family outing. In addition to the beach and the hiking trails, you'll also find a water park (open during the summer months) and picnic areas. In the evening, you can head to nearby Beaches Town Center (about 5 miles south of the park), where you can grab dinner at one of the casual or upscale eateries or fish camps.

Museum of Science & History Museum of Science & History

Located along the Southbank of the St. Johns River, across from downtown Jacksonville, the Museum of Science & History (MOSH) is worth a visit if you've got kids in tow. Although some recent visitors noted that the museum itself is a bit small, many say that it was a hit with the kids. A few past visitors also said the museum's exhibits could benefit from updates, but most agreed this is a good stop for rainy days. Exhibits include information on everything from the ocean and the history of Jacksonville to the human body and outer space, and interactive activities help keep younger visitors engaged. If your little ones need to get rid of some pent-up energy, you can take them to the museum's KidSpace, a spacious playground designed with kids ages 5 and younger in mind.

The Bryan-Gooding Planetarium is an impressive addition to MOSH as it's one of the largest single-lens planetariums in the country. The immersive programs at the planetarium cover space exploration, our planet and the human experience with live presentations led by the planetarium's educators. Different shows run throughout the day and vary by the day of the week. You‘ll also find evening events throughout the year, including Cosmic Concerts, which feature laser lights and high-definition images set to popular music from bands like the Beatles and Metallica. Recent visitors say the planetarium offers a nice break between the other exhibits, but comment about the extra cost to see the shows.

The area offers visitors accommodations such as an oceanfront upscale resort, One Ocean Resort & Spa ; Hotel Palms, a trendy vintage property that was originally a 1947 motor court inn, and vacation rentals through companies like Vrbo. You'll also find casual eateries, golf courses and, of course, a long stretch of soft sand.

Recent travelers say they appreciate the quiet, mostly residential beach, but that there's not much to do for visitors. They also mention that there's limited parking if you're spending the day at the beach. For more dining, shopping and nightlife options in the Atlantic Beach area, take a drive to Beaches Town Center, which sits between Atlantic Beach (to the north) and Neptune Beach to the south. This complex offers many restaurant options and other activities for visitors.

Top 5 airlines serving from Jacksonville to Anywhere

nothing Delta could do... the person sitting next to me was huge and overflowing into my seat

Crew was great! I need wheelchair assistance and they knew who I was and updated me that my chair was on its way and to just hang tight. There was some turbulence but the captain announced we would be going thru it and he handled the plane well. Landing was soft and his.

Aircraft very cramped. Check-in was great with an agent helping us. Food was almost non-existent. Pre-flight went well once I got the app reloaded on my phone since we don’t fly much anymore.

I like that it got us where we were going. Everything else needed work. It was 1/2 hour late and we took off an hour late. The plane had to be cleaned and the disabled loaded on board before we could take off which took forever and then we sat at the terminal FOREVER before we took off. The ride was so bumpy that they couldn’t serve drinks and snack but to about 1/2 the plane. Seriously we should have flown out of Fort Lauderdale. We probably would’ve gotten home several hours earlier.

Flight was on time, the staff was personable & professional, & the plane arrived on time.

Flight was great. DELTA did a fantastic job! FLL airport was chaotic!

You lost my luggage!!! How frustrating!!! Now they can’t find one of our bags!!!! I really don’t have time for this!!!

Fast boarding and exit. Different snacks other than almonds and sun chips.

The boarding agents appeared to do the minimum customer service. They did not appear to try to find solutions to problems.

Trump was still the flight attendants very professional funny you felt right at home

Need a 2nd round of water for a 4+ hour flight

I loved the wifi, much better than Delta. Seats were old. and bathrooms dingy.

no wifi and the aircraft was very old with tiny 4” screens.

I actually missed my first scheduled flight and caught it the next day. I think the check in procedure was mishandled by the baggage handler but the staff were very accommodating.

Has been always great except flight cancelation in the past at very last minute waiting till 2am and we when have to beg for overnight accommodation

Flawless trip. Pilot came out and introduced himself, welcomed everyone, made a light joke to put everyone at ease. Arrived quite early.

JetBlue's check-in was great, but there was an in-flight flight attendant who was very rude and unkind. I didn't realize that the bathrooms were already locked 30 mins prior to landing and needed to use the restroom. Instead of politely asking me to return, she rudely told me, 'No, bathrooms are locked! Go back to your seat!' The flight was more than an hour delay, which made me almost miss my connecting flight. I understand the reasoning, but the action they took to get a hold of maintenance was time consuming. It took them so long to get a hold of maintenance and for maintenance to get started. Most importantly, my 3 checked baggages are missing! I'm writing this review 3 days after my arrival to the Philippines, and my 3 checked baggages, where my wedding dress is, are all missing!

Safe takeoff and landing Better snacks and coffee. Headphones for the TV monitors.

JetBlue has too many delayed flights. I cant recall in the past two years flying with JetBlue without some form a delays. I expect better B6.

My experience with Eva sir was good except the long walk in LA Lex, that was inconvenient for my age,

Boarding was friendly and quick. While the plane model was older with no live tv, the entertainment was full of movies and tv shows. All food was available. Pilots were very communicative with status of the flight. Flight landed on time.

It was terrible because the flight was delayed for 3 hours.

Crowded flight, but upbeat and kind crew. Pilot greeted us at door, flight attendant thanked a number of “special” passengers for their business, another addressed an eight-year old boy as “young man.” United obviously trying to up their game, but though all of that is nice and notable, flying still feels like moving along a human assembly line, being herded into one small space after another (boarding areas with too few seats, planes with limited personal space, shuttles (IAD) packed too full.

Did not like the seat spacing. The seat was very narrow and tight.

United domestic flight was better than international flight. There was no switch to control Ac In international united flight. Food was also average, Air canada food was much better than united.

Seat didn't recline all the way back. Very uncomfortable flight for 8 hours. The turbulence eliminated snack and food stops

Nothing exceptional but all good. Business class seats are like the domestic Mint class on Jet Blue. Comfortable but not exceptional. Food is good but not superb. Flight attendants were better than US carriers but that is to be expected. However, not the caliber of Asian or Middle Eastern airlines. Very Lufthansa like but Lufthansa has slightly better seats, even though they are hardly best in class

The flight was clean and on time, the crew were all very nice and we got the seats we booked. Plenty of food and beverages. The seats are too close so it’s very difficult to try and sleep comfortably.

Any flight that gets from point A to B with no drama is excellent.

They cancelled our flight at the last minute due to mechanical issues. Rather, they “delayed” it till the next morning. A pain in the neck when traveling with two young children. Crew was really nice, which made up for it somewhat. This is the second flight from delta that was cancelled this year. Definitely going to fly another airline when possible

It was good. Flights were all on time to start and landed early. Connections were easy.

The agents at the gate were rude. The stwards were pleasant. The seats were comfortable. The tray table had crumbs on it. A passenger talked constantlt and very loudly for the entire flight annoying many passengers. The stewards did not ask her to speak in a lower voice but my travel partner did.

Nice clean modern plane no issues with the b flight

I had purchased a ticket that allowed one check bag yet I was still charged for my bag! the lady at the ticket counter was rude and condescending.

I grand parents didn’t receive any special treatment they are seniors even i ask for wheelchair

Literally the worst experience ever and I had my service dog with me. Flight was supposed to leave at 1:51 PM but the plane arrived late. They boarded us around 3 PM and kept us on the plane for an hour saying that due to weather conditions in Miami, we could not takeoff yet. After waiting for an hour, they deplaned. And then they will not give us our bags back that we could just leave and schedule for another flight. Every hour they kept updating saying we have to wait another hour without any explanation as to what was going on. Eventually, I went to customer service to change my ticket, but by the time I made it to the front of the line, they started boarding my flight again. And then when we got onto the flight, they said there were two flight attendants That were past their shift. They kept us on the plane for about another 40 minutes until they told us they had no other flight attendance and had to deplane again. Then I gave us hotel vouchers and told us we would be on a flight at 6 AM the next day. At this point it is about 9 PM. I get to the hotel with my dog, who hasn’t been able to go potty for about eight hours. When I arrived at the hotel, I got a text alert saying my flight has been canceled at 6 AM and they moved past to 5 AM, however the hotel shuttle doesn’t leave early enough to make it to the airport for 5 AM flight. So me and some other passengers got a cab after about three hours of sleep to get back to the airport. This was the worst experience ever.

Flight delayed 3 times due to maintenance (on exact same plane that had just brought us from Boston to Miami). Eventually changed to a different plane and gate.

Always getting updates by email very easy to check in on line. There was plenty of checking in staff to get you all through. It was nice that the flight attendants took time to talk to you and were interested in your holiday.

Delayed 4 hours from Charlotte to Nashville. Could have driven there faster. Information provided by AA was sparse.

We truly had not one problem. Nive enough to receive an upgrade. Flight attendants were extremely friendly and cheeful. Gladly will continue to fly American.

First time flying with Frontier . From buying tickets ,getting boarding pass and boarding plane was super easy. Definitely would fly again with Frontier .

Our flight was on time and unremarkable which I'm grateful for, as it is not the norm traveling these days. Frontier is a low-cost carrier and it really shows when compared to other "normal" carriers. They don't even give you water during the flight. The coach seats are decent, however it was not as clean as it should be. We had crumbs all over the floor by our seats.

They lost my baggage on my connection flight, it’s been 24 hours since I put my claim in and still no update on my bags.

they charge too much when you arrive in the air port

The flight was canceled, then delayed twice, we were moved gates twice. Short staff at the counter and check in. We waited for our flight 9 hours. Will never use Frontier ever again, or Spirit.

The flight was delayed 1 hour. The Seats are the worst most uncomfortable chairs I have ever sat in. I have folding chairs in my Garage that are more comfortable.

Good - Leg spar, cleanliness, and on time performance. Bad - No snacks and entertainment.

The plane was on time. Boarding went fast. Smooth flight and landing. I filled out info for a frontier credit card on the flight from Indy to Orlando and have have heard nothing back. I was supposed to get all these “instant” rewards and have received nothing g.

The ground crew in the Tampa airport were forcing people to pay for their personal items, although they met the measurement criteria. They receive $10 for each bag they charge passengers for so this is a complete fraud. An investigation needs to take place and the ground crew that does this need to pay the price, and the Airlines absolutely needs to make it right for these passengers.

The only thing that may be concerning to others is the multiple notifications of a delayed flight. Then, with less than an hour before boarding, the flight was on time. The gate changed several times, leading to confusion.

The Best Hotels In Jacksonville Florida

S ituated on the northeast coast of Florida, Jacksonville serves as a popular destination for tourists looking for fun nightlife, amazing natural sites, and relaxing white sand beaches. Jacksonville, also known as Jax, is the most populated city in Florida, so it is loaded with hotels, all of which have some of their own benefits.

We reviewed Jacksonville hotels and came out with 10 of the best. We discuss location in relation to beaches, dining, and fun activities nearby. We will also discuss the pros and cons of each hotel, and what they offer.

Ponte Vedra Inn & Club

Notable Amenities : golf course, pool, private balcony, babysitting, free WIFI, ocean view, on-site dining options.

Right on Ponte Vedra Beach this hotel has a sister site, The Lodge & Club Ponte Vedra Beach, which is also accessible for guests of the Vedra Inn & Club. This resort offers some of the best hospitality, and with a AAA Five-Diamond rating, it’s sure to be a luxurious stay. It serves as a great hotel for a family vacation as well as offering plenty of space for events such as weddings and corporate gatherings.

The rooms in this resort all look out at the Atlantic Ocean, and the beach is walk-out accessible, which is great for the family that wants to be able to take a swim in the ocean whenever they please.

The Lodge & Club Ponte Vedra has twelve on-site restaurants and bars. From the more elegant and refined atmosphere of the Seahorse Grill to the more relaxed and casual atmosphere of the Surf Deck Grill you can find a restaurant that suits your tastes. We love the vast options and diversity of the dining available. There are plenty of opportunities to get beachside cocktails as well as exclusive drinking and snacking at The Tavern.

You will find the staff at this hotel very attentive, delivering room service to your specific needs and desires. They will help you plan and execute events such as weddings and anniversaries down to the smallest detail, all while being surrounded by the lush flora on the grounds, which are beautifully maintained.

The lush grounds are expansive so places tend to be spread out, but everything is still accessible by walking or by car. The hotel also offers a complimentary shuttle service to the beach.

The views and the opportunity to stay on the grounds for everything you need is what makes this particular hotel stand out. At a high price point Ponte Vedra Inn & Club delivers a luxurious atmosphere and high end customer service. Many people refer to it as a magical place that serves as a hideaway paradise.

The Ponte Vedra Inn & Club is located on Ponte Vedra Beach just southeast of Downtown Jacksonville and south of Jacksonville Beach. It is close to many golf courses, other resorts, and attractions such as the Marsh Landing Country Club and Bird Island Park, a waterfront park with native birds and beautiful trails.

Since it is directly on the beach, this hotel is a further drive from Downtown Jacksonville, about 23 miles and a 30 minute drive. This makes it the perfect hideaway for couples or families that don’t want to be too close to the city atmosphere.

The Ponte Vedra Inn & Club is about a 40 minute drive from the Jacksonville International Airport (JAX), and about a 40 minute drive from the St. Augustine Airport (Northeast Florida Regional Airport).

Beaches Nearby

Ponte Vedra Inn & Club is located right on Ponte Vedra Beach, but is also located 3.5 miles south of Jacksonville Beach, which is only a 10 minute drive. It is also about 6 miles north of Mickler Beach, which is a 15 minute drive away.

Activities Nearby

The Ponte Vedra Inn & Club is in the perfect location for folks who like to golf, play tennis, and shop, and the resort has its own activities to offer. For the golf lover in your family you will be right near the Lagoon Course and Ocean Course, which are located on the resort premises.

Plenty of shops are located within the resort like The Surf Shop and The Ponte Vedra Shop. One downside to being a resort that is on the beach is that you will need a car if you want to take park in what Jacksonville has to offer. .

  • Beaches Museum - 14 minute drive (6 miles)
  • Mind Bender Escape Rooms - 18 minute drive (7 miles)
  • Bird Island Park - 6 minute drive or 34 minute walk (1.7 miles)

Pros and Cons

  • With restaurants and shops you never have to leave the resort.

The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island

Notable Amenities : pool, fitness center, valet Parking, bicycle Rental, family Rooms, children’s Activities, breakfast Available

Located on Amelia Island, an island filled with pristine beaches just northeast of Downtown Jacksonville, The Ritz-Carlton is a high end luxury hotel on thirteen miles of beach

This hotel is ideal for those looking for a cozy and luxurious getaway since the rooms are furnished and designed with a modern taste with private balconies, an optional fireplace, and a roomy formal dining space. When the resort is full, it can feel crowded, so common holidays will be packed and you may experience a limit in services or a wait on certain amenities like beach chairs.

The Ritz-Carlton is designed for families in mind with various activities and treats throughout the premises to entertain and excite children, such as their Pirate Island and their Ritz Kids’ Night. There are also activities for adults like their Hook, Line, and Supper, their “fish-to-dish” interactive dining experience.

This location offers fine dining options on the grounds, which is helpful since there aren’t many restaurants on Amelia Island, or they require a substantial drive. Salt, one of the on-site restaurants, is a AAA 5-Diamond rated establishment serving local seafood. There are others including Coast and Tidewater Grill that are located on the premises.

This hotel is the most expensive in the Jacksonville area and the price may be excessive for what it has to offer. You’re definitely paying for its location right on the beach, which is understandable, but it essentially has the same amenities and services offered by hotels at half their price.

The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island is located on Amelia Island, northeast of Downtown Jacksonville. Downtown is 36.6 miles from this hotel and is a 50 minute drive away. The nearest airport, Fernandina Beach Municipal Airport (2.5 miles away) is a 6 minute drive, while Jacksonville International Airport (27.3 miles away) is a 40 minute drive away, and Northeast Florida Regional Airport (61.8 miles away) is over an hour long drive.

100+ mph winds, stuck vehicles: Dangerous blizzards hit mountains in West

Life-threatening blizzard conditions along the mountain range between California and Nevada this weekend have stranded vehicles on dangerous roads as the storm dumps up to 10 feet of snow in some areas.

The winter weather has closed Yosemite and prompted a National Weather Service office to warn against visiting ski resorts. Snow levels at Lake Tahoe are expected to reach 6 feet, though higher elevation areas could see more. Driving conditions are considered "extremely dangerous to impossible" with low visibility and whiteout conditions, forecasters warned.

North of Lake Tahoe, on I-80, many vehicles were stuck overnight on Donner Summit, California Highway Patrol said . It took several hours for emergency personnel and tow trucks to reach motorists due to blizzard conditions, police say.

As of Saturday, transportation officials were working to recover vehicles left on the freeway, CHP said. There is no estimated time of reopening the highway.

The eastern Sierra Nevada had high danger for avalanches through Sunday evening, the NWS Reno office said.

Lake Tahoe ski resorts see sustained 150 mph wind gusts

Several ski resorts along the crest of the Sierra Nevada near the Lake Tahoe Basin saw wind gusts between 125 and 150 mph for several hours, Scott McGuire, a meteorologist at the NWS Reno office, told USA TODAY.

In a blog post Saturday morning , Palisades Tahoe, which recorded extreme wind gusts, said it closed all chairlifts Saturday due to the wind, visibility and snowfall. Many other resorts closed over the weekend due to the blizzard.

"It’s going to take several days to start getting things back open," McGuire said, "and we’re not done yet."

High winds affect multiple states

Las Vegas, located hundreds of miles south of Reno, saw strong winds Saturday afternoon that prompted delays at Harry Reid International Airport, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

On Saturday, the NWS issued high wind warnings across desert regions in California, Nevada and Arizona through Sunday morning.

NWS' warning described southwest winds between 35 and 45 mph, and gusts up to 70 mph, stretching from Death Valley National Park, in California, through the Las Vegas region, and near the Grand Canyon, in Arizona.

Forecasters expected winds to blow down trees and power lines, causing power outages and difficult travel. In a social media post , NWS Las Vegas said strong winds were beginning to kick up dust south of the city, causing decreased visibility.

Blizzard restricts travel in California mountains

California authorities on Friday shut down 100 mile of I-80, the main route between Reno and Sacramento due to the weather. There was no estimate when the freeway would reopen.

Californians have been advised not to travel up to ski resorts in the Sierras through the weekend, the NWS Bay Area office said.

Meanwhile, Yosemite National Park is closed at least through Sunday afternoon, the National Park Service announced. A portion of Generals Highway leading inside Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks , east of Fresno, is also closed due to the winter storm.

Snow showers are expected to continue in the Sierras through Wednesday, NWS Reno said, when drier conditions may appear later in the week.

US weather watches and warnings

Storm damage reports, us winter weather forecast, national weather radar, stormy weather elsewhere in the us.

A storm will bring more widespread rain to the East Coast on Saturday as thunderstorms impact portions of the Southeast, and rain heads for Southern California.

A storm system from the central Gulf Coast, which impacted the southern Appalachians and the Ohio Valley on Friday, has reached the East Coast, according to the NWS.

"Some locally heavy downpours are possible, especially north of the boundary in the interior South and along the Carolina coast," the weather service said.

Forecasters encourage caution for those traveling across the Pocono Mountains and northern New Jersey where ice and snow are possible.

The system is set to exit the New England coast by Sunday morning.

Down south, heavy precipitation and storms are possible in parts of the coastal Southeast going into north Florida and the Florida Panhandle until Sunday, the service reported.

Across the country, Southern California will also see rain this weekend, and snow will fall at high elevations. Strong southwest winds are also forecast, with advisories and high wind warnings in effect for interior sections through Saturday.

Why isn’t your phone working? It could be the new 10-digit calling requirements

travel to jacksonville fl

On Monday, the 904 area code stopped being synonymous with Jacksonville. In May 2022, The Florida Public Service Commission announced the addition of the 324 area code to Northeast Florida after the number of remaining 904 phone numbers began to dwindle. Now that these numbers are online and operational, a few things might be different for you, including having to punch the 904 area code into your phone when you may not have needed to use it for local calls in the past. Here are some facts of the change:

More on 904 Jacksonville is running out of 904 area code numbers. What does this mean?

The new area code 904 meet 324: Here's what you need to know.

What is the new area code?

Customers in the 904 area who request new phone service or an additional line, or who switch providers in some cases, may be assigned a number with the new 324 area code. Mandatory 10-digit dialing for local calls is now in effect.

When does mandatory 10-digit dialing for local calls take effect?

Today, Feb. 26.

What does 10-digit dialing mean?

You must dial the area code and the seven-digit phone number for the person you are trying to reach, even for local calls within Duval County.

Will the 911 phone number change?

What are some important numbers in Jacksonville?
