5 Lake Tahoe Cruises You Need To Book Right Now

zephyr cove dinner cruise

The best advice we could ever give you—book the boat tour. Seriously, we’ve done it all and we’re here to tell you that a summer day on one of these epic Lake Tahoe cruises is simply unmatched.

The beach days, the backcountry hikes, the kayak excursions; they’re epic. But there’s just something about a boat ride that can’t be touched. You’ll get it when you’re gliding into Emerald Bay, sipping a chilled IPA on a sunset cruise or anchored in crystal clear waters at your own private cove.

That’s when you’ll pour one out for the good folks at Epic Lake Tahoe that convinced you, “I need that Lake Tahoe boat tour.” Now you just have to choose which one.

Sip wine on a sunset sail to Emerald Bay.

zephyr cove dinner cruise

Wine and sunsets. There’s just something about the combo that works, and trust us, it only gets better when paired with a calm Emerald Bay. Although there’s no shortage of sunset cruises to choose from around Lake Tahoe, nothing elevates the moment quite like the quiet drift of a sailboat.

Save the sails billowing in the wind and cool water spraying against the bow, your journey from South Lake Tahoe to Emerald Bay with Sail Tahoe Blue will feel like magic. No motor, no wake—just an easy breeze powering you along.

Find a comfortable spot on the deck, then tip back a glass of cold, local beer or wine as you glide past Mt. Tallac and some of Tahoe’s favorite beaches. Once in Emerald Bay, you’ll get a close look at the Vikingsholm Castle and the lake’s only island before sailing back to Ski Run Marina.

Especially if you’ve never been sailing before, this is absolutely one of the best Tahoe boat cruise experiences. It really is an unmatched feeling to float through the Sierras off the water & wind alone.

zephyr cove dinner cruise

Lock in the most epic sunset of all time on a 2-hour sailing cruise around Lake Tahoe with Sail Tahoe Blue. Premium beer & wine included.

Discover hidden coves on a private boat tour with a captain.

zephyr cove dinner cruise

Okay, we know we just waxed poetic about a sunset, happy hour cruise but we’ve got another absolute gem of a Lake Tahoe boat tour in the lineup. If you want the ultimate summer day—and we’re talking the one you think back on for years to come—then a sun-drenched cruise with Boat Tahoe is the way to go.

Pack up the cooler and join your friendly captain on board for one of our favorite boat tours around South Lake Tahoe. Blue skies and the midday sun will transform the lake’s infamously cool waters into the perfect spot to cool off.

Ask your captain to you show around the iconic Emerald Bay sites, suit up for water sports, or simply let them show off the lake’s hidden gems. Tuck into a secluded cove near D.L. Bliss, where you can jump off boulders or anchor in Zephyr Cove for a picnic on the sun deck.

Best of all, your captain will curate the whole experience. Whether it’s breezy, busy or simply a little too boozy, your only job is to kick back and enjoy it.

zephyr cove dinner cruise

A private captain, a spacious boat, your crew of six—it’s the perfect recipe for the ultimate day on Lake Tahoe. Discover the best spots on the lake with a 4-hour private boat charter!

Pair a legendary drink with legendary views.

zephyr cove dinner cruise

Having one too many of the Camp Richardson Rum Runners is just one of those South Lake Tahoe must-do’s. And while you could always visit The Beacon, we’re partial to slurping down that tropical drink on one of everyone’s favorite Lake Tahoe cruises.

At just 1.5 hours round-trip, the Rum Runner boat tour out to Emerald Bay is half scenic cruise, half party boat. It’s the perfect quick trip—just the right amount of time to buy your friends a round of Rum Runners from the on-boat bar, soak in the views and get back to the marina to chill on the beach.

A great experience for bigger groups or families with kids, these daily tours are one of the easiest (and most fun!) options to get on the water.

Slice into a ribeye dinner cruise beneath the stars.

zephyr cove dinner cruise

A year-round classic, sailing from the Zephyr Cove Resort, daytime cruises, dinner cruises and private charters aboard the M.S. Dixie II are always at the top of our list.

But the dinner cruise in particular, with its golden hour departure, full bar and elevated menu transform a scenic boat ride into a can’t-miss Lake Tahoe experience.

The M.S. Dixie II is one of the few Lake Tahoe boat tours that runs no matter what the season. The 500-passenger paddle-wheeler can make a smooth ride out of stormy seas, with a heated salon and dining room with live music. In the summer months, steal out to the sun deck to watch the alpenglow light up the mountain skyline.

Family-friendly and excellent for large groups, this iconic ride around Lake Tahoe is well-loved among locals, tourists and everyone in between.

Enjoy the happiest hour during a North Lake Tahoe cruise.

zephyr cove dinner cruise

Everything you’ve seen up until this point has departed from South Lake Tahoe. The Tahoe Gal fixes that. Hands down the best boat cruise from the north side of the lake, this historic paddle-wheeler operates daily tours along the stunning west & north shores of Lake Tahoe.

Tours run daily, with on-board food & beverage available for purchase. Family-friendly options like their morning brunch cruise are always an amazing time, but we’re partial to the 1.5 hour happy hour cruise for obvious reasons.

You’re going for the views, of course, but the long list of martini cocktails and curated selection of local wines doesn’t hurt. Make it a special event by bringing a large group along, or keep it intimate as a date night excursion.

Either way, a happy hour on a boat always trumps a regular ol’ restaurant happy hour in our book.

This list has the potential to be really long because, well, we’re firm believers that these Lake Tahoe cruises are some of the best ways to spend your time and money.

But—let’s be honest. Can you imagine anything better than a sunny day spent on a beautiful boat? A cold water plunge? A chilled Rum Runner paired with mountain views? God speed on that booking, folks.

(Rather rent your own boat? We’ve know a few good pontoon and party boat rentals around the lake too.)

Dinner Cruise

HORRIBLE, Horrible, HORRIBLE. Not handicapped friendly, in fact they do not help handicapped. We were told my wife could stay on bottom deck if unable to walk up stairs to music. But, then was refused beverages because 2nd dinner schedule was comming in so we had to move from our table to make room for them. When we complained, the Caption was rude and scarey, we felt fear from him surrounded by his crew. They said to get off the boat for complaining. Food was not very good either. Never go there if you are disabled, you will be sorry.

The cruise was overbooked and my family was moved to a different booking without being notified. We were traveling with little kids who were extremely disappointed. The change in booking forced us to cancel other plans and ruined our day. The management took no accountability for their action. Very poor customer service. In addition, the cruise arrival was delayed by over half hour.

We went on the MS DIxie II for one of their dinner cruises. It was cool to get on a paddlewheeler and a relaxing way to get out on the beautiful Lake Tahoe. The dinner cruises have two seatings for dinner, the first seating sits you right as you board while the folks in the second seating can go to the top deck to enjoy lake views or the live music being played on the middle deck. We finished our first seating dinner in just a bit under an hour (to help you figure out which part of the night you'll be eating instead of up on deck). The eating area had large windows, so if you're lucky enough to be seated near them, you'll still get a decent view, but they also have tables in the middle of the room. The food was decent, definitely better than I expected, but I wasn't expecting too much. They had cocktails, wine, beer and soft drinks available for purchase but the included meal came with three courses (app, entree and dessert). The entree had 3 options but we both chose the steak. The steak was fine, but overcooked (regardless of doneness that you order). The sides were surprisingly good, I was really impressed with the broccolini, I really thought it would be overcooked, but it was perfect. The service was extremely friendly (they often asked if you wanted drinks), but was a little rushed. This is to be expected as they're trying to get two seatings in, and, to be fair, you want to eat quickly so you can go up on deck to enjoy the lake views! The cruise heads into Emerald Bay, so the sunset timing isn't that important, considering you're not really catching the sunset when you're in the bay anyway. The live music was also very enjoyable, which is great because by the time you're heading back from Emerald Bay, it's dark and there's not as much to see. Overall it was a fun time, but at almost $100/per person, it's a bit pricey for what you're getting. If it were cheaper - say - $50-$75/per person it'd probably be 4 stars. Please note that these prices do not include gratuity for either the drinks or dinner service.

I saw a lot of negative or impartial reviews about the experience received on the MS Dixie II but my grandmother is in town and I wanted to find a boat to get out on the lake. I'd like to put those to rest by saying it was well worth the time and money. The upper deck is spacious and had a wonderful view. Middle deck has a gift shop bar and a live band. The band was tasteful and set a good atmosphere. Lower deck is the dining room and that was the best steak dinner I've ever had!

zephyr cove dinner cruise

Beautiful view of one side of the lake and Emerald Bay. Some Historical information provided over the speaker system but it was hard to hear over very loud people near us. Bar was very busy. Return trip is the same view as the trip to the other side. Boat travelled in close to a straight line , except for circling the bay. I estimate the boat was traveling less then 10 MPH. Social distancing was not practiced. We had already seen most of the sites on this cruise by car and hiking.

I took the sunset cruise. I originally booked on travelocity for this adventure. I drove all the way there to find out my ticket was canceled. The trip was sold as a 5pm with a max of 15 people. It was at 6, there was no way there was less than 150. There is actually 2 meal seating times. First round you eat then you can watch the sun set. If you eat with the second group, if you’re on the 2nd floor you can watch the live band. I enjoyed the view. The food was not my favorite; I ordered the chicken and it had zero taste. I made new friends with another solo traveler and a newlywed couple. We sang sweet Caroline from the top deck. The experience of people is what made it 4 star. Otherwise it was really 3.

Lake Tahoe's trifecta: 3 Days of adventure at Zephyr Cove

Join us on an exciting three-day journey as we uncover the beauty and excitement of Zephyr Cove Resort, a hidden gem for adventure seekers and nature lovers in the Sierra Nevada Mountains.

By: Ranz Navarro + Save to a List

Presented by Nation's Vacation .

Day 1: Sunset serenity and starlit splendor

Our journey began with a scenic 50-minute drive from Reno airport, taking us through the mountain pass and into South East Lake Tahoe, where Zephyr Cove Resort is located. We checked in and settled into the cabin that would be our home for the next few days.

Eager to explore, we ventured out to discover the resort's sprawling grounds, sandy beaches, and towering trees. We wandered the shoreline, feeling the soft sand between our toes, and admired the serene beauty—a perfect prelude to the adventures ahead. The highlight of our evening awaited.

A from-above image looking down at a cove with boats floating on the water.

As sunset approached, we boarded the M.S. Dixie II, a grand paddle-wheeler, for a sunset dinner cruise to Emerald Bay. We were seated next to a lovely couple celebrating their wedding anniversary.

One partner, Tim, gave me a brief history of the M.S. Dixie II and how they have been coming to enjoy the cruise every year on the M.S. Dixie II. Tim’s wife said the dinner cruise is their favorite part of the trip.

I savored a mouthwatering Cowboy Ribeye Steak while Mary delighted in the Copper River Salmon. We have a habit of switching plates midway through our dinners, and I enjoyed the salmon more than my steak.

A large paddle wheel boat is cruising on a large body of water.

We capped off dinner with a divine New York cheesecake drizzled with strawberry sauce, which I enjoyed because it satisfied my sweet tooth. We went up to the top deck just in time to witness the sun setting over Emerald Bay. Nature painted the sky with hues of orange and pink, casting an ethereal glow.

An island rests in the middle of a large body of water surrounded by trees.

As darkness blanketed the lake, the boat’s galley transformed into a dance floor with a two-person band. We danced and sang along to the music. Dancing and sipping cocktails beneath the starlit sky was the perfect way to end our first day.

A cabin is lit up among tall pine trees and the milky way shines in the navy night sky.

Back at our cabin, we stepped onto the porch, and I seized the opportunity to capture the Milky Way with my camera—a celestial spectacle that left us in awe.

Day 2: A day of lakeside exploration

Our second day began with a hearty breakfast at Zephyr Cove Restaurant , where I ordered the signature Zephyr Special. Mary opted for French toast—a delightful start to our day of adventures.

A log cabin restaurant has a neon sign that reads

Energized and ready to explore, we embarked on a lakeside stroll, dipping our feet into the crystal-clear waters of Lake Tahoe.

A line of colorful kayaks sit on a beach with pine-lined shore behind them.

We rented a 23-foot powerboat and cruised across the pristine lake to Emerald Bay, Meek's Bay, Sand Harbor Beach, Secret Beach, and Cave Rock.

Our first stop was the iconic Emerald Bay, where we admired Fannette Island and its charming tea house. Meek's Bay offered a serene spot for a picnic lunch with sandwiches, fruits, and the lake as our companions.

A person is standing on the front of a boat on a body of water with an island in front of it.

Continuing our aquatic odyssey, we visited Sand Harbor Beach, renowned for its sculpted rocks and azure waters. Nearby, we stumbled upon the secluded Secret Beach, a tranquil haven away from the crowds.

A white power boat with a green awning is floating on a large body of water with tree-line shores.

Our adventure culminated at Cave Rock, a monumental volcanic formation rising majestically from the water.

Pro tip: Hike to the top of Cave Rock for sunset. You won't be disappointed.

A long-haired person sits on a boat looking out at a body of water surrounded by trees.

I highly recommend renting a powerboat to explore. Seeing Lake Tahoe from the water opened up an entirely new experience. We avoided traffic going around the lake, and took a lot of shortcuts getting to point B from point A.

When we got back to Zephyr Cove, we couldn't resist renting a kayak and paddling around the cove. The peaceful serenity perfectly contrasted the adrenaline-filled moments of our boat adventure.

A person wearing a life jacket paddles a kayak on a body of water surrounded by trees.

The day concluded with a mesmerizing sunset from the dock.

A pier leads out into a large body of water at sunset or sunrise.

As the twilight deepened, we went back to our cabin to refresh and prepare for dinner. The day of exploration left us invigorated and ready for the next adventure.

Day 3: High-octane fun in Carson Valley

Our final day began with a sense of bittersweet anticipation. We woke up early to watch the sunrise one last time and went for a walk around the beach. After a light breakfast and coffee, we packed and loaded the car, ready for one last adventure.

A person is standing in a sunbeam on a beach.

A scenic 45-minute drive led us to Minden, Nevada, where we met Lee from Lake Tahoe Adventures . Paul and Keegan, a father-son duo visiting from Colorado Springs, CO, joined us. They were in town to watch the legendary Reno Air Races before it shuts down forever over the weekend.

After a quick lesson on how to drive the off-road vehicle and going over safety guidelines, Lee guided us on an exhilarating two-hour off-road razor tour through the rugged terrain of the Pine Nut Mountains. The experience was a thrilling mix of high-octane adventure and an intimate connection with the delicate high desert ecosystem.

A person in a helmet and goggles is driving an off-road vehicle in sand.

Mary seized the opportunity to take the wheel, declaring it "the gnarliest experience" she'd ever had. Lee led us through winding washes, up challenging hills, and down rugged canyons, offering grand vistas of this remote landscape.

As our adventure concluded, we exchanged contact information with our newfound friends, Paul and Keegan. It was a reminder that adventures bring us closer to nature but to one another.

With hearts full of gratitude and memories to cherish, we embarked on the road to Reno, where our flight home awaited. Our whirlwind three-day getaway provided a much-needed respite from our busy lives—a testament to the beauty, joy, and enduring friendships that Zephyr Cove Resort and Lake Tahoe can offer.
