Horor s America Tours, Liberec, Individuální cesta (ubytování a letenky) Západ USA + Havaj

S touto firmou již nikdy nepojedu. Připravili mi několik bezesných nocí na dovolené a spoustu nervů. Objednali jsem si individuální cestu a leteckou dopravu. Můj první kontakt byl pan Krucký a byl jsem nadšen. Objednávky a kvalita byla bez problémů. Příjemný, pomohl, poradil, vše skvělé.

Pak nás předal k realizaci zájezdu nějaké Knotkové a od nepříjemného pocitu, že obtěžujeme, jsme se dopracovali k hororu. Neschopnost této dámy je monumentální. Již ve fázi před odletem byly její reakce na maily poněkud opožděné – 1-2 týdny. Pravé problémy nastaly až o dovolené. Cesovali jsme autem z Phoenixu do San Francisca, odkud jsme měli letět na Havaj. Letenky nám koupila přes American Airlines (AA), ale let byl operován Alaska Airlines. 4 dny před odletem přišel mail, že byl let bez náhrady zrušen ze strany AA, ale že zajistili náhradu. Měli jsme původně letět v 9ráno a doletět tam v poledne. Náhrada byla 11 hodin přes Phoenix s přestupem a přílet v noci. To by rozbilo plány s shuttlem z letiště, srazem s ubytovatelem, …

Překvapilo mě, že údajně zrušený let je stále v nabídce Alaska. Dcera umí naštěstí výborně anglicky. Zavolala na Alaska, kde řekli, že jsme stále vedeni na jejich letu. AA řekli, že to není problém, jen musí zavolat cestovka, která to platila, aby uvolnila letenky do Phoenixu a vrátila je zpět na přímý let.

Zavolal jsem do America Tours (ve 3 v noci v USA kvůli posunu času, ale stejně jsem nemohl kvůli tomu spát) a žádal je o vyřešení problému. Knotková nejdříve tvrdila, že je to chyba AA a nejde s tím nic dělat. Prý to není první problém s AA. Když jsme jí řekli o tom, co řekli v AA, že stačí, aby zavolali, začala uvažovat, že možní pošle mail, ale že nemá adresu. Když jsme ji žádali, aby zavolala, řekla, že nemá číslo. Pomohli jsme jí tím, že je na hlavní stránce AA. Pak něco blekotala o časovém posunu. Informace, že jsou tam 24 hodin denně nepomohla. Pak se zatvrdila a řekla, že to nejde a že se s námi nebude bavit, že máme letenky a můžeme být rádi, že letíme.

Zkoušel jsem to přes i přes pana Kruckého, který se ale letenkami nezabýval. Snažil se, ale tlumočil nám jen její nesmysly o zlých AA. K dovršení všeho majitel Am. Tour potvrdil, že ta Knotková jedná právně.

I pokud bych ten nesmysl přijal, pak se musím ptát, proč koupila letenky u nespolehlivého poskytovatele a nekoupila to rovnou od Alaska.

To byl náš poslední kontakt s touto CK. Ani se nezeptali, jak let dopadl, jestli jsme dalších 14 na Havaji byli spokojeni. Prostě nás hodili přes palubu.

A pokud by vás zajímalo, jak to dopadlo, tak i přes obstrukce a neschopnost Knotkové i majitele jsme letěli přímo s Alaska. Po asi 10 telefonátech s AA a Alaska pořád nechápali, proč CK situaci nenapraví. Pořád jsme byli na přímém letu a měli i sedadla. Problém byl, že oba odlety byly prakticky současně, ale na různých terminálech. Byly to nervy. Pokud by nevyšla Alaska, těžko bysme stihli let AA do Phoenixu. Šli jsme k Alaska a doufali, že to dobře dopadne. Byla tam obrovská fronta a byly nervy, jestli nás vezmou. První letenka vypadla ale druhá se zablokovala. Následovalo dlouhé vysvětlování a 45 min telefonát k AA. Nějaká vysoce postavená managerka u AA nakonec situaci vyřešila s tím, že poruší pravidla, bude ignorovat rezervaci CK a přendá letenky na původní trasu. Od Alaska i AA padaly poznámky o neprofesionalitě a stupiditě America Tours.

Takže za mě už nikdy. Pokud by s nimi někdo cestovat chtěl, tak si kupte letenky sami, ať nejste rukojmí diletantů ale můžete si případné problémky jednoduše vyřešit sami.

By analyzing currency strengths, local prices and essential tourist expenses in 40 popular vacation destinations around the globe, the Holiday Money Report 2024 highlights some of the cheapest places to travel. The report ranks the destinations based on a barometer that takes the local price of eight tourist essentials into consideration—including coffee, beer, cola, wine, water, sunscreen, insect repellent and a three-course meal. And while the report doesn’t include factors like hotels and airfare, it helps give a good sense of where your dollars will stretch the furthest.

This is the 18th year that the Post Office has done this report. And the good news: Prices have fallen since last year in 25 spots on the list. (A note that the original report included prices in pounds sterling, which have been converted into dollars here, using the exchange rate on the date of publication of 1.26.)

Leading the list as the cheapest place to travel right now is Hoi An, Vietnam. According to the Post Office report, a total estimated cost of just $64.51 a day for the travel essentials makes this charming gem the ultimate bang-for-your-buck destination that won’t break the bank. Located on the central coast of Vietnam, Hoi An entices visitors with its UNESCO -recognized Ancient Town, a picturesque spot where lantern-lit streets lead to quaint shops and street food stalls. It is also convenient to stunning white-sand beaches—some of the most beautiful in Asia .

Following closely behind in the second spot is Cape Town, South Africa, where an outlay of $68.48 a day for the essentials promises an unforgettable experience against the backdrop of Table Mountain and pristine coastlines. Mombasa, Kenya takes the third spot on the list. This beachfront destination on the east coast of Africa beckons with its white-sand shores, vibrant markets and rich Swahili heritage, offering an immersive experience for travelers seeking both relaxation and cultural exploration.

In a surprising twist, Tokyo, Japan—a bustling metropolis where tradition meets modernity—secures the fourth spot on the list. According to the Post Office, just $74.43 a day is needed for essential tourist purchases. Helping drive this ranking was the cost of a glass of wine (an average of only $4.56) and a bottle of water (averaging 77¢).

Rounding out the top five is the Algarve in Portugal, which combines culture, history and natural beauty at a fraction of the cost compared to previous years. With its sun-drenched beaches, charming villages and delectable seafood, the Algarve offers an idyllic escape for travelers seeking an affordable yet enriching getaway.

Karol G is making waves with her Mañana Será Bonito stadium tour. Following her successful stint in the U.S., she’s now captivating audiences across Latin America, accompanied by a slew of surprise guests and special invitees on many stops.

The tour began Feb. 8 at Mexico City’s renowned Estadio Azteca, where Karol shared the stage with 2024 breakout star Xavi, who performed his No. 1 Hot Latin Songs hit “La Diabla.” The Colombian hitmaker achieved a historic milestone as the first female artist to sell out the iconic Mexican stadium for three consecutive nights, drawing an impressive 80,000 attendees each evening.

She also performed in the Mexican cities of Monterrey, Guadalajara, as well as in Guatemala City and San José, Costa Rica. In the latter city, she shattered Coldplay’s record by selling 104,686 tickets across two sold-out nights (March 9-10), marking the highest ticket sales ever for a concert in the country.

In Santo Domingo, Dominican dembow artist Ángel Dior and Puerto Rican star Justin Quiles joined Karol onstage to perform “Ojos Ferrari” from her tour’s namesake album. And during her two-day stopover in Venezuela, the superstar surprised her fans with a reunion of Servando and Florentino, with whom she made an emotional trip down memory lane, to Salserín, a youth salsa orchestra. The Colombian singer and the Venezuelan brothers performed the 1996 salsa hit “De Sol a Sol” in front of 50,000 people.

Her tour will continue to make stops in Bogotá, Santiago and Buenos Aires and conclude in Asunción, Paraguay, at Estadio La Nueva Olla on May 2. However, the journey doesn’t end there. Karol will begin her European stint right after, launching on June 8 in Zurich, Switzerland.

As La Bichota’s Mañana tour continues, keep an eye out for the list of performers (surprise or not) from her Latin American leg below, including some opening acts, in alphabetical order.

On March 15, Dominican dembow artist Ángel Dior graced the stage alongside Karol G to perform their song “Ojos Ferrari,” also starring Puerto Rican star Justin Quiles also joined in at the Estadio Olímpico in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

Venezuelan-American singer-songwriter Elena Rose opened Karol’s two concerts in Caracas, on March 23 and 24 at the Estadio Monumental Simón Bolívar.

Servando y Florentino

Servando and Florentino, former members of the youth salsa orchestra Salserín, were the surprise guests at Karol G’s show in Caracas on March 23. The Primera brothers took the stage with La Bichota to sing their classic “De Sol a Sol.”

“Thank you dear Karol G for inviting us to such a special night for you on your Mañana Será Bonito Tour. Caracas confirmes that this is also your home and how great you are. The first woman to make history at the Estadio Monumental Simon Bolivar. Not only you stand out for your great show but also for the wonderful person you are. Singing ‘Sol a Sol’ with you and in front of more than 50 thousand people has been an incredible experience from start to finish,” said the duo on their socials.

On February 10, the Phoenix-born artist performed in his ancestral homeland for the first time as a surprise guest at Karol G’s sold-out Estadio Azteca show. “He told me that he has never sung in his country, in Mexico,”  La Bichota said  when introducing the new hitmaker in February. “I told him that I was sure that the moment he started singing here, the stadium was going to turn up, and he was going to be proud of who he is.”

American Airlines changes pet policy, allows passengers to bring carry-on with pet carrier

Good news for pet owners! American Airlines is relaxing its pet policy and allowing those who travel with their animal companions to bring a full-size carry-on too, along with the pet carrier.

"On flights with American you can bring one pet carrier as a carry-on if: You pay the carry-on pet fee; Your pet stays in the pet carrier and under the seat in front of you the entire flight," says American Airline's on their website , adding that passengers can also bring "one additional item on board with your pet," which can be a personal item like a purse or small handbag or a carry-on bag that fits in the overhead bin and meets the airline's requirements .

"Remember, you can only bring one with your pet carrier, not both," says American.

Earlier, travelers with pets were only allowed to bring a small personal item, that could fit under the seat if they were bringing their pet onboard. Anything bigger than that, like a carry-on, was required to be checked for $35. Alternatively, pet owners could put their pet in the cargo hold if they wanted to bring a bigger item with them on the flight.

However, there has been no change in fees required to bring a pet onboard. That remains fixed at $150, as per the American Airline's website. Meanwhile, pet strollers are still required to be checked in and all checked bag fees apply.

American Airlines did not immediately respond to USA TODAY's request for comment and what prompted the relaxation in policy.

Traveling with pets

Even with the relaxation in policy, experts advise thoughtful planning and research before traveling with pets and considering factors such as choosing a pet-friendly airline, insurance and preparing your pet for the journey ahead of time.

Every airline has its own guidelines for traveling with pets and the websites for domestic carriers like Southwest , JetBlue , American , Alaska , United and Delta each spell out what pets can travel where and the requirements for a carrier that can fit under the seat.

There are limitations on the number of pets a passenger can travel with on different aircrafts and travelers are advised to go through the airline policies before making their travel plans and booking tickets.

Similarly, country-based restrictions also apply, and travelers are advised to understand pet-entry requirements for their destination county when traveling abroad.

I’m a Doctor. Dengue Fever Took Even Me by Surprise on Vacation.

I hate mosquitoes so much that I take my own bug repellent to parties. But in early March, on a trip with my partner to the idyllic island of Curaçao off the coast of Venezuela, I was caught off guard by insect bites after our bed-and-breakfast hosts said that mosquitoes didn’t usually appear until late summer.

Near the end of the vacation, my legs began to ache. After I couldn’t keep up with my partner on a snorkeling adventure, he pulled me from the water. My ribs felt broken, as if I’d been smashed against large boulders in the sea. Later that day came intense fever, alternating with shaking chills.

Back in Michigan — weak, nauseated and dehydrated from explosive diarrhea — I ended up in the emergency department. Tests showed concerning white blood cell levels and abnormal liver numbers. The physician assistant who saw me was perplexed; she gave me IV fluids and medication for nausea and sent me home.

A few days later I developed itching so severe that I couldn’t sleep. A bright red rash spread over both thighs and up my lower back. My brain was foggy, and my balance was so impaired that I would have failed a sobriety test. My primary care doctor had no answers. But as my head began to clear, it occurred to me to request a dengue fever test.

Two days later, the test was positive.

Despite my training in medicine, I was blindsided. Dengue, a mosquito-borne illness, is surging through Latin America and the Caribbean, including in Puerto Rico, where a public health emergency was declared last week. This year is likely to be the worst on record, in part because of El Niño-driven temperature spikes and extreme weather linked to climate change. As temperatures rise and precipitation patterns grow more erratic, the problem will get only worse.

But neither the traveling public nor our frontline health workers are prepared. Without urgent reforms to how we educate travelers, doctors, nurses and others — as well as reforms to public health surveillance and early warning systems — we will be doomed to miss textbook cases like mine. That means those infected with dengue will miss out on timely treatment, possibly even spreading the virus to areas where it was never found before.

Dengue virus, which is transmitted by the Aedes species of mosquitoes, infects up to 400 million people every year in nearly every region of the world, but it is most prevalent in Latin America, South and Southeast Asia and East Africa. Most cases are asymptomatic or, like mine, are considered mild, although the aptly nicknamed breakbone fever often doesn’t feel that way. Some 5 percent of cases progress to a severe, life-threatening disease including hemorrhagic fever.

One malicious feature of this virus is that when someone is infected a second time with a different type, the risk of severe dengue is higher. A vaccine exists, but the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends it only for children ages 9 to 16 who had dengue before and live in places where the virus is common. That’s because, paradoxically, if you’ve never had dengue, the vaccine puts you at greater risk of severe illness your first time.

Dengue outbreaks, which, in the Americas, tend to occur every three to five years , now appear to be expanding their geographic reach as temperatures climb . The Aedes mosquito has typically had difficulty surviving and reproducing during the winter in temperate climates. But in parts of Brazil, which currently faces a dengue emergency , the thermometer no longer dips as low in the winter as it once did, allowing the bugs to reproduce year-round. Overall, Latin America and the Caribbean have had three times the number of cases this year as reported for the same period in 2023, which was a record year. Higher temperatures are also helping the virus develop faster inside the mosquito, leading to a higher viral load and a higher probability of transmission. And mosquitoes are benefiting from standing water from rains and floods that are growing more extreme in a warming world.

As the virus spreads globally, travelers are bringing infections back to the continental United States. Based on 2024 numbers to date, this year should show a clear increase of cases here at home compared with 2023, given that the typical dengue season hasn’t even started yet. There could also be local outbreaks in places like Florida, Texas and California, which experienced small ones in the past. As Dr. Gabriela Paz-Bailey, the chief of the C.D.C.’s dengue branch, told me by email, “Increased travel to places with dengue risk could lead to more local transmission, but the risk of widespread transmission in the continental United States is low.”

But since testing is done only on a small fraction of cases, many are going uncounted. I was the one who requested that I be tested. Had I not been given a diagnosis, I would not be aware of my increased risk of severe illness if I am reinfected. Getting a diagnosis is crucial to inform those infected in areas where the Aedes mosquito lives so that the virus doesn’t spread further.

The growing risk means travelers to regions with dengue must be savvier: They can check local news and U.S. State Department advisories, bring an effective insect repellent and protective clothing and book lodging with air-conditioning or screens on the windows and doors. Though the Aedes mosquitoes now live year-round in many locations and are pushing northward into new regions , thanks to climate change and other factors, there are still seasons when the risk is greater, and travelers might consider avoiding trips during those periods. Travel insurance with medical coverage may also be a useful precaution.

For medical professionals, this should be a warning. We need to start thinking about dengue as a possible diagnosis, not just a piece of textbook trivia. We should ask about recent travel when treating patients presenting with symptoms, especially symptoms not easily explained by other diagnoses.

Medical schools are gradually integrating climate change effects into curriculums . This is essential, since malaria, Lyme, West Nile and other insect-borne diseases are on the rise, as are other climate-change-exacerbated conditions like heat illness, asthma and allergies. This work must accelerate, and training must include those of us who are already practicing. State medical boards should consider mandating continuing education on tropical emerging illnesses, as they do on many other pertinent topics.

After receiving my positive test result, I called the emergency department to leave a message for my previous provider about my diagnosis, assuming she had never before seen dengue. If we continue on this trajectory, I’m certain this won’t be her last case.
