The story behind the south african rebel tours.

Winner drawn every Friday at 11am. Promotion ends April 12th, 2024.

South Africa was banned from playing international cricket for a long time due to their pursuance of a the Apartheid policy.

In 1980s, it prompted them to lure players from other cricketing nations in organising rebel tours to South Africa. It wasn’t that difficult those days – the cricketers were paid peanuts.

So frustrated were many West Indies players in 1981 of not finding a place in their team, that they took part in the first ever rebel tour organised by South Africa. It was ironically captained by Alvin Kallicharan, who refused to take part in the 1977 Packers Series.

It made sense, as by 1981 he was past his peak, on the verge of retirement. He could not resist the temptation of $120,000 after tax offered by South Africa, a gargantuan amount at that time, especially when a starving West Indies Cricket board presiding over a bunch of talented cricketers not paid anywhere close to $120K.

A point to be noted that on this tour was that Colin Croft and Sylvester Clarke spearheaded the rebel attack. They were fast enough to force the Proteas batsmen to wear helmets for the first time.

In 1982, Graham Gooch lead an English rebel tour to South Africa. There was a veil of secrecy regarding the tour. Even the British press – which can smell a ripe fart from miles away – didn’t have a clue until their team landed in Johannesburg. It pretty much constituted the English Test 11, except Ian Botham, who supposedly refused to go on board. His reason was that he couldn’t think of making an eye contact with his English county buddy Vivian Richards had Botham participated in that rebel tour to an officially racist South Africa.

I read Graham Gooch’s autobiography Gooch in 1996, which I grabbed from a tiny bookstore in Liverpool. The book was an awesome read. As the skipper of that infamous tour, Gooch debunked this myth about Botham giving the South Africa rebel tour a miss.

He suggested Botham’s inability to make to the Tour had more to do with the amount of money he demanded from the South Africans, than his concern for his friendship with Richards.

But unlike the West Indians who were banned for lifeime, Gooch’s 12 – called ‘The Dirty Dozen Dicks’ by the British – were only banned for three years. When Gooch was back with a bang in 1985, another rebel tour lurked in the horizons in Australia. It was captained by Kim Hughes, the Aussie who just resigned from the captaincy after a bad series against the Windies.

Similar to the English board, the Australian board banned them for no more than three years.

In 1989, Mohinder (Jimmy) Amarnath was approached to captain an rebel tour of Indian cricketers. Roger Binny and Madan Lal were part of the team.

Amarnath was unceremoniously dropped from Indian squad as he called the BCCI selectors a “bunch of jokers”.

Amarnath and his team, who hardly any career left ahead of them, chickened out. They had nothing to lose, for a couple of years later in 1991 South Africa was welcomed back. The animosity related to Apartheid and the rebel tours was dumped to the dustbins of history.

west indies rebel tour scorecard

Former West Indies captain Clive Lloyd says he would have got paid up to a million dollars in the late 1980s to join the rebel tour to South Africa. “I would have been a very rich guy. I just didn’t want to and I couldn’t and I am proud of who I am, my colour… I think everybody should be proud of who they are. Apartheid is a system that should not happen anywhere in the world… and all the money in the world could not get me there,” Lloyd says.

Not everyone had unwavering principles like the two-time World Cup-winning captain and some of the players who went on the rebel tour had a different take. They somehow believed that by going to South Africa in 1983, they would make a difference by showing that black people could compete with a White team in the heart of apartheid South Africa.

But the taint of what Viv Richards called ‘blood money’ stuck with them for the rest of their lives.

The South African Cricket Union had hosted the rebel tours of England and Sri Lanka but now wanted the stars of world cricket to play on their home soil. Joe Pamensky, the then president of the South African Cricket Union, clearly says the inducement was money. “We made an offer, candidly, that they could not refuse,” Pamensky says, lifting a line made famous by Marlon Brando in the Godfather.

Festive offer

Those who took the offer perhaps didn’t realise that they would be ostracised for the rest of their lives on return to the Caribbean.

The example of Jamaica’s star batsman Lawrence Rowe is a reminder of how much the rebel tour hurt the fans back home. In 2011, a stand at Sabina Park was named after Rowe. But such was the backlash that his name was removed and the decision reversed.

Rowe moved to the United States post the rebel tour.

Those who decided to travel to South Africa also had their moments of indecisiveness. Two players wanted to get off the plane just before it took off. But it was too late. Till the day they reached the airport to fly to Miami, before taking the connecting flight, the players denied they were travelling to South Africa.

There is footage of Collis King, the hero of the 1979 World Cup final against England – he had made 86 off 66 when the Windies were in trouble of 99 for 4 – being abused by fans as he hides his face behind a hat.

The negotiations between the players and the South African Cricket Union took months and with cricketers like Lloyd and some of the regulars unwilling to travel, a second set of players had to be convinced.

“I made the decision because I wasn’t getting treated right as far as West Indies cricket. I was still scoring runs, but I wasn’t in the team…” King justifies.

Wicketkeeper David Murray, who drifted to drug addiction, feels him going on the rebel tour got more attention than the others.

For the money they got (estimated to be approximately $100,000 to $ 150,000), the players were putting on the line not only their reputation but their future. Even getting a visa to enter a country was going to be tough for these rebels.

“We arranged with the department of internal affairs that their passports wouldn’t be stamped to indicate they have been to visit South Africa, because it was a problem for them internationally,” Pamensky says.

The 18 players who were guests in South Africa, also got special status. They were given the title of ‘honorary whites’ which gave them access to every place black people in South Africa were barred from – for example, beaches.

This, however, didn’t help fast bowler Colin Croft. He was taken off a train for venturing into a white-only compartment. The ‘honorary whites’ status only added to the resentment back home which was growing with each passing day the players spend in South Africa.

“We were disappointed in what they did because I don’t think they were going to make a difference. They were going for the money. But don’t tell me you are going to change the apartheid system,” Llyod says.

The rebels were slapped with a life ban, which even Llyod calls a bit harsh. The ban was lifted in 1989, but most of these players were past their prime.

The film contains interviews with all-rounder Franklyn Stephenson, Murray, King and with Graeme Pollock and Clive Rice giving the South African perspective.

Some of the rebel cricketers managed to put their life together post the tour. Franklyn Stephenson started an academy and is a golf instructor in Barbados. Stephenson never played for the West Indies, though he was one of the most skilful pacers. A framed picture of the rebel team takes the pride of place at the academy and Stephenson treasures the blazer. He also comes up with a peppy jingle about the tour and seems to be in a happy place. “I will tell you of a cricket match and the men who played in Johannesburg in 1983…”

Journalist Al Gilkes who covered the tour says he saw the men as ‘missionaries’ rather than ‘mercenaries,’ a minority opinion even after nearly 40 years of the tour.

J’can teenager in West Indies squad for Pakistan tour

ST JOHN’S, Antigua (CMC) — Teenage Jamaica Women’s pacer Kate Wilmott was the only newcomer named in a West Indies 15-member squad for an eight-match, white-ball series against hosts Pakistan to be contested between April 18 and May 3.

At the same time, evergreen compatriot Chedean Nation and burly St Lucia and Windward Islands Women’s left-arm spin bowling all-rounder Qiana Joseph earned recalls to the squad, which will play three One-day and five Twenty20 Internationals against the hosts.

Lead selector Ann Browne-John said Wilmott, as well as Nation and Joseph were rewarded for creditable performances in the West Indies Women’s Super50 Cup and Twenty20 Blaze that were contested over the past month in St Kitts.

“The return of experienced player Chedean Nation will strengthen the batting, and 19-year-old fast bowler Kate Wilmott will be making her [first appearance],” Browne-John said in a CWI news release.

“The players have just completed the regional tournament where some of the experienced players had encouraging performances, and it is hoped this will continue into the Pakistan series.”

Wilmott ended with only five wickets at 20 runs apiece in the Super50 and took only one wicket at 71 in the T20 Blaze for double-crown champions Jamaica Women, but it is clear she was selected based on talent and the selectors are trying to continue to build the fast-bowling stocks of the team.

Nation, 37, made 192 runs — the second highest aggregate — in the Super50, averaging exactly 48, and hitting two half-centuries, and gathered 66 runs at 16.50 and bagged six wickets at 13.16 with her medium-fast bowling in the T20s for the Jamaicans.

Joseph, 23, bagged eight wickets at 16.25 in the Super50 Cup, and made 98 runs, including a top score of 56, and took three wickets at 22.33 in the T20s for the Windwards.

Several familiar faces fill in the rest of the squad, which will be led again by world-rated Barbadian all-rounder Hayley Matthews, although she missed both regional tournaments because of playing commitments elsewhere.

They include Guyana captain and wicketkeeper-batsman Shemaine Campbelle, who will be deputy to Matthews, successful Jamaica captain and former West Indies Women’s captain Stafanie Taylor, and Windwards captain and leg-spinner Afy Fletcher — all of whom were among the leading performers in the tournaments.

Both white-ball series will be crucial to the West Indies Women because the ODIs will be part of the ICC Women’s Championship, which results in direct qualification for the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup next year in India, and the T20Is will be preparation for ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in September-October in Bangladesh.

“The upcoming series against Pakistan is extremely important for the team as they return to international competition after almost six months,” Browne-John added. “The last series being against Australia.

“Apart from the three ODIs, the team will get some much-needed T20 matches as they prepare to participate in the T20 World Cup later this year.”

West Indies Women will assemble from 6 April in Dubai for a one-week training camp before travelling on April 14 to Pakistan for the matches.

Squad — Hayley Matthews (captain), Shemaine Campbelle (vice-captain), Aaliyah Alleyne, Shamilia Connell, Afy Fletcher, Cherry Ann Fraser, Jannillea Glasgow, Chinelle Henry, Zaida James, Qiana Joseph, Chedean Nation, Karishma Ramharack, Stafanie Taylor, Rashada Williams, Kate Wilmott.

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.

Meet your expert guide outside the Kremlin and head underground with your Moscow metro ticket to discover the citys underground treasures. See the most interesting stations with extravagant Soviet-era architecture and hear the history surrounding the metro stations from your expert guide. Widely praised as one of Stalins finest architectural achievements, Moscow 's subway was created to symbolize his rising regime and a recognized empire. Learn about his successors, who later toned down the ornateness of the subways architecture, and see how the different eras are reflected in the character of each station. If you're lucky, you may even find the secret entrance to the unconfirmed Metro-2, a parallel underground system used by the government -- a mystery which has neither been denied nor confirmed today. Visit Revolution Square Station ( Ploschad revolyutsii ) and admire the 72 magnificent bronze sculptures that depict the people of the former Soviet Union, set underneath marble arches designed by the legendary Russian architect Alexey Dushkin. Another Dushkin-created station is Novoslobodskaya , and youll head here next to admire its dazzling stained-glass panels. Discover Baroque dcor, vaulted ceilings and chandeliers at Komsomolskaya Station, and then marvel at the grandiose and pompous design of Kurskaya Station -- one of the first stations to be built. Its design reflects Stalins communist ideals and youll note its left-wing slogans on the walls, next to mosaics that symbolize the victory of his regime over poverty and starvation. Finally, pay a visit to Mayakovskaya , the station thats named after Russian poet Vladmir Mayakovsky, and see why its often considered the most beautiful and iconic Moscow Metro station. Gaze upward at some 30 fascinating mosaics that depict Stalins vision for a bright Soviet future, and then admire the features of typical pre-World War II architecture that the station embodies.
