Why does Celebrity use an X as its Logo?
by Prof. Cruise · Published February 7, 2023 · Updated February 7, 2023
Introduction
As I prepare to embark on my first Celebrity cruise post-Covid, I’ve been refamiliarizing myself with everything I love about the line and researching what’s changed since my last Celebrity cruises in late 2019 (that none of my numerous post-Covid cruises have been on Celebrity was in no way intentional – I book cruises based on a combination of cost, timing, and itinerary, not ship or line). I love Celebrity and I’m eager to be back onboard!
Stay tuned for my upcoming Celebrity blog series where I’ll cover my experience onboard the Solstice, dining and bar options and associated menus, and what makes the line unique. In the meantime, I thought I’d tackle one of the most common questions of new cruisers to the line, or bystanders who catch a glimpse of a Celebrity ship docked at port or at sea: What the heck does the X stand for?
What Celebrity’s X doesn’t Stand for
First, what the X doesn’t stand for:
- Marking the spot
- Eliminating something from contention
So now that we have that cleared up, here’s what the X does stand for:
What does Celebrity’s X Stand for?
“X” is the symbol for the Greek letter “Chi.”
Okay, but why was it chosen as Celebrity’s logo?
Let’s hop in the Delorean and travel back in time to 1989. While I was begging my mom to crimp my hair for church only to mess it up by falling asleep on her giant shoulder pads Velcroed to the inside of a bold-print neon blouse, the Greece-based Chandris Group, named for the Chandris family, was launching a new cruise line. They selected the “X” as their logo because it’s the first letter in the Greek spelling of “Chandris.”
An Enduring Symbol
34 year later, my hair is straight, the shoulder pads are gone, and neon is only seen at theme parties and on strip club signs. But the X endures. And, for me, will always symbolize a slightly understated, but high quality vacation at sea. And with that…

Celebrity Cruises Invites Travellers to ‘Journey WonderFULL’ with Them Across Europe
In its latest campaign, Celebrity is challenging holidaymakers to Find the ‘X’ to win the trip of a lifetime
Celebrating its biggest ever European season, featuring more 7-night sailings than ever before, award-winning cruise line, Celebrity Cruises ®, has announced the launch of its new Find the ‘X’ challenge.
The new interactive campaign, launching Thursday 26th January at celebritycruises.com/gb/ findthex gives prospective travellers the opportunity to search through spectacular ultra-high definition photographs, known as gigapixel images, of Europe’s most tempting coastal destinations and culture-rich cities to find hidden ‘X’ symbols.
To join in on the hunt for the hidden ‘X’s, eagle-eyed travellers will need to explore their way through the five stunning images of Dubrovnik, Florence, Santorini, Barcelona and Athens, found on Celebrity’s interactive site . Cleverly camouflaged in each of the images is Celebrity Cruises’ X-shaped logo containing a unique code, providing the ultimate way to discover destinations from Celebrity Cruises’ Europe 2023 itineraries.
Excitingly – anyone able to crack the puzzle and enter all five codes will be entered into a draw to win the trip of a lifetime onboard a Celebrity Cruises’ ship, with a choice of 7-night sailings to every corner of Europe.
Captured by London-based panoramic photographer, Will Pearson, and Aleksandr Reznikthese, images are composed of hundreds of photos stitched together in a single shoot to create a seamless, ultra-high resolution image containing 4 billion pixels. Each of these locations that have been captured can be visited this summer aboard Celebrity Cruises’ magnificent fleet, including all three ships in the industry-transforming Edge Series®. Providing excellent value for holidaymakers, many of Celebrity’s 7-night sailings allow you to tick off up to 6 ports on your bucket list as you explore Europe in comfort and luxury aboard award-winning ships.
Inspiring future travellers to explore stunning panoramic images, and giving a chance to win a free luxury cruise holiday, this new campaign comes on the back of a recent poll conducted among 2,000 Brits which revealed that location (48%) and value for money (46%) are the top priorities when selecting a holiday destination.
In an additional positive for the travel industry – 74% of participants said that taking a holiday this year is a priority, with almost half (48%) putting holidays as a high or top priority for the year.
Celebrity Cruises takes travellers to almost 100 unique destinations across their European itineraries, with an amazing range of on-board amenities including fine dining experiences curated by Michelin-starred chefs, a spa on par with the most luxury resorts on land, and cutting-edge entertainment to rival the West End. With Brits looking ahead to sunnier weather, there has never been a better time to book as guests can secure a cruise now, with WiFi, drinks and tips included for a deposit of just £150 per person.
Those taking part should keep an eye on Celebrity Cruises’ social media channels which will be revealing clues about the location of each ‘X’ throughout the two-week competition ( @celebritycruisesuk – Instagram , @CelebrityUK – Twitter , CelebrityCruises – Facebook ).
Avid travellers are invited to intricately explore five locations in stunning detail:
Find the ‘X’ Dubrovnik: Dubrovnik is a stunning coastal city in Croatia, known for its well-preserved old town and ancient walls. The city is a UNESCO World Heritage site and offers breathtaking views of the Adriatic Sea. Chosen as the backdrop to an array of cinema blockbusters, uncover this culture-rich city at night with late departures from the city, up to 11pm.
Find the ‘X’ Florence: Florence is a city rich in art, culture, and history, located in the heart of Tuscany, Italy. The city is home to some of the world’s most famous works of art, including Michelangelo’s David, and is a must-visit destination for any art lover. Guests can savour even more of Florence with an overnight stay in the city allowing plenty of time to relax and explore on the incredible Celebrity Edge.
Find the ‘X’ Santorini: The iconic white-washed houses of Santorini make it one of the most beautiful and photogenic destinations in the world. Located in the Aegean Sea, Santorini is known for its stunning sunsets, crystal clear waters, and rich history. Three ships will visit the black sands of Santorini whilst sailing the Eastern Mediterranean, including brand new Celebrity BeyondSM.
Find the ‘X’ Barcelona: Barcelona is a vibrant and lively city located on the Mediterranean coast of Spain. Known for its world-class architecture, including the works of Antoni Gaudí, and delicious food, Barcelona is a must-visit destination and a key departure port for cruise holidays onboard the award-winning Celebrity Edge this summer.
Find the ‘X’ Athens: Once one of the world’s most powerful empires, Athens pairs archeological sites and an abundance of historical riches, with restaurants offering superb Mediterranean cuisine and bustling central markets. Get more out of the cruise by combining it with a stay on land when finishing a cruise in Athens on the ground-breaking Celebrity Apex®.
“We are thrilled to announce the launch of this new interactive challenge, which brings to life some of the stunning destinations we sail to in Europe, as well as giving away an incredible luxury cruise holiday for two to a lucky winner,” said Jo Rzymowska, Managing Director, Celebrity Cruises, EMEA.
“We wanted something which allowed in-depth discovery of the places our ships visit during their sailings, and the images highlight the unique beauty and charm of these magnificent cities, and give a small glimpse into just what you can discover when you travel with us.
“With seven of our award-winning ships in Europe this summer, led by the industry-transforming Celebrity Edge offering iconic 7-night sailings, there are so many amazing opportunities to discover these locations in relaxed luxury. We invite you to join us on a journey to discover all that the world has to offer with Celebrity Cruises by ‘Finding the X’.”
“Working on this project for Celebrity Cruises was an absolute pleasure and I was blown away by the stunning beauty of each destination. From the blue-domed churches of Santorini to the ancient walls of Dubrovnik, each location had its own unique charm and offered endless opportunities for breathtaking photographs. I can’t wait for others to see these images, experience the magic of these destinations for themselves and maybe even win a cruise.” – Will Pearson, Gigapixel Photographer

Everything you need to know about Celebrity Cruises cabins and suites
In keeping with the ambiance on Celebrity Cruises ' vessels, the brand's accommodations offer an elevated experience without going full-on luxury. That means Celebrity's passengers can expect more sophisticated surroundings and an upscale vibe at relatively affordable prices.
Like the vessels themselves, the line's cabins are well-appointed and elegant, with modern touches that appeal to a slightly younger-than-average cruise demographic.
Learn what to expect from each room type before you book with our primer for those who are new to Celebrity.

Celebrity Cruises cabin primer
Celebrity Cruises' fleet of ships includes more than a dozen vessels that fall into four main categories : Millennium Class, Solstice Class, Edge Class and Galapagos Class. Ships in the first three classes share similarities in terms of their cabin offerings. The Galapagos-class vessels are much smaller and include a narrower selection of cabin types and amenities. Because of this, the Galapagos Class will have its own section below; the other sections of this article do not apply to the Galapagos Class.
Although all of the ships' staterooms fall into the same general categories – insides, oceanviews, balconies and suites – the specific types of each vary across classes, particularly with regard to the most expensive options.
Even at the most basic level, nearly all accommodations include two twin beds that can be connected to form a king (most rooms) or queen; a desk and vanity area with a chair, drawers and a phone; nightstands with drawer space and reading lights; a sofa or plush chair; a coffee table; an in-cabin bathroom with shampoo, conditioner, body wash and towels; a closet with shelves, hanging space and bathrobes; a safe; a hair dryer; a television with a selection of movies and live TV, as well as shipboard channels and the ability to check the daily schedule and your onboard bill; a mini-fridge; a selection of outlets, including USB ports; and individual lighting and climate controls.

All cabins also come with the services of a room attendant, who will tidy your digs up to two times daily. All passengers also have access to 24-hour room service, which carries a fee of $9.95 per order, plus an 18% auto-gratuity.
Across the fleet, all ships offer connecting rooms, with some of the largest suites joining to sleep up to 10 people. The line also features special accommodations for solo cruisers on a small number of its vessels (specifics are noted below under applicable cabin categories).
Further, all ships offer several accessible accommodations across all main stateroom categories (except Celebrity Solstice and Celebrity Reflection, which do not offer accessible standard balcony cabins) for passengers needing extra space for wheelchairs, walkers and scooters. Those cabins feature wider (32-inch) doorways, a 5-foot turning radius, ramped bathroom thresholds, bathroom grab bars, lowered sinks and vanities, higher toilets, roll-in showers with fold-down benches, hand-held showerheads, lowered closet bars and accessible balconies (in select staterooms).
Unless otherwise noted, all cabins are designed for double occupancy. In most cases, solo travelers staying in accommodations meant for two people will be charged an additional cruise fare, known as a single supplement. Further, some staterooms are outfitted with trundle beds, pull-down bunks or sofa beds that can accommodate up to four people per room.
Inside cabins on Celebrity ships
Inside cabins on Celebrity ships run anywhere from 170 to 202 square feet, and they offer everything mentioned above. The one thing they don't have is a view.
As is implied by their name, they have no windows and no balconies for natural light or fresh air. These are stellar options for anyone on a budget or travelers who have trouble sleeping with any sort of light.
Celebrity Silhouette has four inside cabins available for solo travelers.
RELATED: 6 reasons to book an inside cabin
Oceanview cabins on Celebrity ships
Oceanview cabins on Celebrity ships come in at between 170 and 242 square feet, depending on the ship and type.
True to their name, these rooms offer views of the ocean from windows that don't open, so although there are no in-cabin ocean breezes, there is natural light.
They include all of the basic amenities listed above.
Balcony cabins on Celebrity ships
There are several veranda categories available throughout the Celebrity fleet, all of which offer traditional balcony setups. Types include basic balcony cabins (170 to 202 square feet, 38- to 53-square-foot balcony), Family Verandas (270 to 575 square feet, 106- to 242-square-foot balcony) that sleep a larger number of people and Sunset Verandas (194 to 228 square feet, 53- to 89-square-foot balcony) that offer aft views of the ship's wake.
The vessels also offer AquaClass and Concierge Class digs, which are essentially basic balcony accommodations with some extras. The former focuses on wellness and comes with free fitness classes, unlimited access to the onboard spa's thermal suite, dining at exclusive health-focused restaurant Blu, a healthier room service menu, daily bottled water, upgraded toiletries, discounts on spa packages and yoga mats for in-cabin use. The latter entitles cruisers to amenities like dedicated concierge services, as well as an exclusive luncheon, daily in-room canapes and sparkling wine on request.
Basic amenities are included, but what really sets these accommodations apart is that they provide cruisers with private access to ocean air – no need to venture to a public deck.
Infinite Veranda
As with standard balcony cabins, Infinite Verandas – which are only found on ships in the line's Edge Class – come with the basic amenities listed above, but they also grant a bit more interior space (202 square feet) in lieu of the usual walk-out terrace.
They earn their own category here because, as those who book the accommodations will find, instead of a traditional balcony, they have a window that can be raised and lowered with the push of a button. A set of see-through folding doors allows the area near the window to be cordoned off in order to make it feel like a more traditional balcony.
RELATED: 6 reasons to stay in a balcony cabin
Celebrity's three newest vessels each have several Infinite Veranda solo cabins for cruisers traveling by themselves. Celebrity Edge has 16, and Celebrity Apex offers 24, while Celebrity Beyond boasts 32. They offer 131 to 184 square feet of space with 42- to 45-square-foot interior balcony areas.
Suites on Celebrity ships
There are 10 types of suites on Celebrity's ships, four of which – Sky Suites, Celebrity Suites, Royal Suites and Penthouse Suites – appear on every single ship in the fleet. Two more – Edge Villas and Iconic Suites – are found only on Edge-class vessels. Another two, Signature Suites and Reflection Suites, are exclusive to Celebrity Reflection, and the remaining Sunset Suites and AquaClass Suites are new to the fleet with the debut of Celebrity Beyond.
Passengers booked in any of the suites in this category have access to the exclusive suites-only lounge and pool deck, known as The Retreat, as well as dining in suite-access-only restaurant Luminae.
RELATED: 7 reasons to splurge on a cruise ship suite
Cruisers in these accommodations also receive a slew of perks, including higher-level Wi-Fi and drink packages (upgraded from the free ones that come with all fares); onboard credit; prepaid gratuities; free in-room bottles of alcohol; complimentary laundry, shoeshine, butler and concierge services; and priority embarkation and tendering, among other draws.
An explanation of each type of suite can be found below.
These are the smallest suites in the fleet, ranging from 251 to 362 square feet with balconies that range from 57 to 163 square feet. They're arranged in a studio configuration, similar to what you'd find in non-suite cruise-ship accommodations. They're the least expensive option for those who crave access to suite-level amenities.
Celebrity Suites
For cruisers wanting the step up their square footage or storage space, a Celebrity Suite will do the trick. Expect 394 to 498 square feet, plus a balcony between 51 and 105 square feet, complete with separate living and bedroom spaces, a sizeable bathroom (with a bathtub/shower combo) and tons of drawers and cabinets to help chronic overpackers stow their belongings.
Royal Suites
For an even bigger upgrade, Royal Suites come in at between 538 and 687 square feet with verandas measuring 72 to 195 square feet. Each has ample storage, separate lounging and sleeping quarters, and a generously sized bathroom with a shower and separate soaking tub that's perfect for relaxing after a day in port.
Penthouse Suites
Penthouse suites are the largest accommodations found fleetwide, ranging from 1,291 to 1,432 square feet with 197- to 1,098-square-foot verandas that are large enough for their own private hot tubs. The two-bed, two-bath setup with a separate sitting area and dining table that seats eight, makes these cabins great for entertaining or sharing with travel companions.
Edge Villas
These two-deck suites offer an upstairs-and-downstairs setup with one bedroom, two bathrooms, and a living room in 739 square feet of space. There's also a 211-square-foot balcony. These rooms are exclusive to the line's Edge Class of ships, and they boast access to a private plunge pool.
Iconic Suites
Iconic Suites -- which are in high demand, due to their limited numbers and plethora of extras -- are the largest on Edge-class vessels, offering 1,892 square feet, a nearly 689-square-foot balcony (larger than most staterooms onboard, complete with a private hot tub and daybed), a bathroom with dual sinks and a whirlpool tub, and an unparalleled forward-facing view from directly above the bridge.
Signature Suites
While Signature Suite accommodations are on the smaller side, at 441 square feet, the 118-square-foot balcony still manages to include an outdoor tub with a rain shower so you can soak while taking in the views as you sail. They also include high ceilings, a shower/tub combo, and separate living and sleeping areas.
Reflection Suites
At nearly four times the size of Signature Suites, Reflection Suites come equipped with two bedrooms, two bathrooms and a cantilevered glass shower that hangs out over the ocean for simply amazing views. All of this fits neatly into 1,636 square feet of space, plus a 194-square-foot balcony. Dual sinks, a separate soaking tub with a rain shower, high ceilings, a walk-in closet, and a prime corner location round out the opulent offerings. These suites are only slightly smaller than Iconic Suites, but their verandas are far tinier.
Sunset Suites
Similar to the wake-view concept behind the line's Sunset Veranda staterooms, Sunset Suites provide an elevated experience with the same stunning vistas at each ship's aft. Some of these suites are on the smaller side, comprising 296 to 575 square feet, plus a 53- to 242-square-foot balcony, but they do incorporate separate living and sleeping areas, making them feel more like true suites.
AquaClass Sky Suites
These rooms combine the space and enhanced extras of a Sky Suite (including access to The Retreat and Luminae) with the perks of an AquaClass cabin – fitness classes, thermal suite access, dining at Blu, daily bottled water, discounts on spa packages and yoga mats for in-cabin use – to bring passengers a more health-centric suite experience in 319 square feet with a 79-square-foot veranda.
Cabins on Celebrity's Galapagos-class ships
Because Celebrity's expedition vessels are much smaller, they warrant their own section. What follows is a breakdown of the cabin types – most of which are suites – offered on each ship.
Note that Celebrity Flora, Celebrity Xpedition and Celebrity Xploration have neither The Retreat nor Luminae, so suite passengers do not have access to those venues. Amenities also may vary from those offered on the fleet's non-expedition ships.
Celebrity Flora
The largest of Celebrity's expedition vessels, Celebrity Flora houses 50 cabins with a double-occupancy capacity for 100 passengers. All staterooms are classified as suites, with a mix of several types of Sky Suites, including some with Infinite Verandas (330 to 365 square feet, 65- to 86-square-foot balcony); Royal Suites (559 square feet, 129-square-foot balcony); and Penthouse Suites (1,288 square feet, 321-square-foot balcony).
Celebrity Xpedition
Significantly smaller is Celebrity Xpedition, which can carry 48 passengers across 24 cabins at capacity. Availability includes 160-square-foot oceanview accommodations; 175-square-foot Junior Suites with 45-square-foot verandas; and a combination of suites – Xpedition Suites, Royal Suites and Penthouse Suites – that run the gamut from 205 to 460 square feet with balconies ranging from 50 to 235 square feet. Given that Penthouse Suites on the line's other ships span 1,291 to 1,432 square feet with 197- to 1,098-square-foot verandas, it's easy to see that suite sizes decrease as ship sizes decrease.
Celebrity Xploration
The tiniest and most no-frills option on Celebrity's roster is Celebrity Xploration, which carries just 16 people in eight cabins at its maximum. Oddly, all staterooms are labeled as Junior Suites, but while half of them have balconies (180 square feet with 245-square-foot verandas), the other half (190 square feet) don't. It's also interesting to note that, in the ones that do have them, the balconies boast significantly more space than the interior living area does.
Bottom line
Celebrity's selection of basic cabins is fairly standard. However, when it comes to suites, passengers have a decent number of choices, and even the smallest and least expensive options offer coveted amenities and access to dedicated spaces.
Although there are suite types that span the entire fleet, the line likes to create experiences that are exclusive to some of its newest classes and ships.
Celebrity is one of the best big-ship cruise brands when it comes to everything from service and extras to in-cabin storage space, decor and even furniture layout. Overall, the line offers an upscale ambiance with a lot of value for your money, starting with inside cabins and running right up through accommodations at the suite level.

X Club - an older kid's hangout?
By TW0589 , March 6, 2022 in Celebrity Cruises

I'm about to book a cruise for myself and my 12 year old son. We saw on the deck plan of the Equinox the "X Club." We're hoping that's a hangout area for older kids with X boxes and what-not. Can anyone confirm or shed light on whether that's the case? And what the minimum age is to use it? He's concerned it may be for "teens" only.

The teen club has a great hang out place for teens, they have a blast with both organized and self run activities. My oldest son has attended 4 times now, always has a fun time. The first time we sailed Celebrity he was allowed in at age 12, best check and see it its still the case. Enjoy the cruise
So the X Club is the teens club? I can't find anything about it on the website and couldn't get anyone to answer the phone when I called, but I'll try again.

The teen program is for ages 13-17. I believe the space onboard for teens is called X Club. There are X-Boxs etc.

I think the age was once 12 but has been raised to 13.

We're hoping that's a hangout area for older kids with X boxes and what-not. Can anyone confirm or shed light on whether that's the case? And what the minimum age is to use it? He's concerned it may be for "teens" only. Thanks.
If you check some of the walk throughs on YouTube I think there Xboxes in the club for younger groups as well.

The photos seem to show PlayStations not X boxes for both the younger age groups and teens but not knowing when the photos were taken I would not go by the photos. I would guess someone actually on board now or recently can confirm.

Just went over a YouTube walk through for Summit dated Jan 30 2022 and the branding on the wall says Xbox and the model looks like the older generation Xbox one S model. So maybe it differs ship to ship and based upon refurb schedule.

My son sailed has sailed on Celebrity at age 12 as well as 14 and 16. I think they are pretty flexible and make age groupings according to who shows up on any given sailing. We took my son to register when he was 12, but he went there on his own at 14 and 16. He was in more structured activities at age 12 and had a blast. His previous cruises had been on Disney and he had outgrown their kid’s clubs. They were allowed gaming time on the X-boxes, had tournaments, did scavenger hunts, watched movies, etc. It was over Springbreak, so there were a fair number of kids on board. I don’t remember if they had any older teens. They were well supervised. The X club was just a meeting point when he was 14/16 so he and the other kids his age that he met could roam the ship where they wanted: the pool deck, fitness club, basketball court, buffet and some of the lounges (on a limited basis, mostly Al Bacio). They spent little to no time gaming on the Xboxes and they did not have many (if any)activities led by the staff beyond the first few days. I’d like to think they were well-behaved; I didn’t hear about any staff or adult passenger complaints. This year he is 18 and “aged out”. I think he’ll still look to see who shows up at the teen club at the start of the cruise to find “his peeps” to hang with. I know there were a few older (18 and over) kids in his group on our last cruise. Hope that’s helpful.

They must have X-Boxes or they replaced any Play Stations with X Boxes. I don't think they would have X box branding up if they did not have them. Usually having branding up is an agreement made with the vendor.

Thank you so much for your thoughtful and informed response. You have had much better luck with your son and the clubs than I have. I have never been able to get my son interested in the kid's clubs on cruises--on any cruise line. Although he is a very social club, he doesn't like the clubs and won't stay in them. I'm hoping if he can come and go as he pleases, he might make some friends, enjoy some kid time. If not, he will once again be my constant companion. Which is fine, but surely not as fun for him.
Just an FYI, save those sign and sail cards, your kids will get credit for the cruises sailed when they turn 18. Although Celebrity keeps good records, computer systems change and records are lost. My kids lost a couple of cruise but were still elite when 18.

Celebrity cruise ship rescues 7 people from small vessel 'adrift' between Cuba and Mexico
A Celebrity Cruises ship rescued a group of people from another vessel between Cuba and Mexico this week.
Celebrity Apex “encountered a small vessel adrift and in need of assistance” on Monday, according to a spokesperson for the cruise line.
“The ship’s crew immediately launched a rescue operation, safely bringing (seven) people onboard,” the spokesperson told USA TODAY an emailed statement. “The crew provided them with medical attention, and is working closely with the U.S. Coast Guard.”
The ship departed from Fort Lauderdale for a week-long cruise with stops in Key West, Belize, Cozumel, Mexico and Grand Cayman on Saturday, according to CruiseMapper . The Celebrity spokesperson did not specify who the people in the vessel were.
The ship notified the Coast Guard of the rescue “but there was no U.S. Coast Guard involvement in the case” because of its location, Petty Officer Eric Rodriguez said.
“In accordance with the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS), the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), and maritime tradition, it is common and somewhat expected that mariners will render assistance to other seafarers in distress if they have the capability to do so,” he said in an email.
Hotels at sea: Land-based hospitality brands bring guests with them to cruises
The news comes after another cruise ship, Carnival Jubilee, rescued two men stranded in a kayak off the coast of Mexico’s Isla Mujeres in January.

Obama, Clinton and big-name entertainers help Biden raise a record $26 million for his reelection

NEW YORK (AP) — Barack Obama, Bill Clinton and some big names from the entertainment world teamed up Thursday night to deliver a rousing New York embrace of President Joe Biden that hauled in a record-setting $26 million-plus for his reelection campaign.
The mood at Radio City Music Hall was electric as Obama praised Biden’s willingness to look for common ground and said, “That’s the kind of president I want.” Clinton said simply of the choices facing voters in 2024: “Stay with what works.”
Biden himself went straight at Donald Trump, saying his expected GOP rival’s ideas were “a little old and out of shape.”
Moderator Stephen Colbert, in an armchair conversation with the trio, called them “champion talkers” and joked that the three presidents had come to town “and not one of them is here to appear in court,” a dig at Trump’s many legal troubles.
The eye-popping fundraising haul was a major show of Democratic support for Biden at a time of persistently low poll numbers. The president will test the power of his campaign cash as he faces off with Trump, who proved with his 2016 win over Democrat Hillary Clinton that he didn’t need to raise the most money to seize the presidency.
During the nearly hourlong conversation, Obama and Clinton explained just how hard Biden’s job is. They spoke of loneliness and frustration over policies that work but aren’t immediately felt by the public. They gave an insider’s view of the office as they sought to explain why Biden was best for the job.
“It is a lonely seat,” said Obama, who had hitched a ride to New York on Air Force One with Biden.
The talk was by turns humorous and serious, ending with all three donning sunglasses in the mostly dark music hall, a nod to the trademark Ray-Ban sunglasses that Biden often wears.
The sold-out Radio City Music Hall event was a gilded exclamation mark on a recent burst of campaign travel by Biden, who has visited several political battlegrounds in the three weeks since his State of the Union address served as a rallying cry for his reelection bid . Thursday’s event also brought together more than three decades of Democratic leadership .
The music hall’s marquee advertised the big-dollar night as “An Evening with Joe Biden Barack Obama Bill Clinton.” NYPD officers lined surrounding streets as part of a heavy security presence.
Protesters angry at Biden’s handling of the war in Gaza and strong support of Israel briefly disrupted the show, drawing a pledge from Biden to keep working to stop civilian deaths, particularly of children. But he added, “Israel’s existence is at stake.” Hundreds more protested outside in the drizzling rain, many demanding a cease-fire and waving Palestinian flags.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., was up first to warm up the crowd of about 5,000 supporters. Entertainers, too, lined up to make the case for Biden. Lizzo belted out her hit “About Damn Time” and emcee Mindy Kaling joked that it was nice to be in a room with “so many rich people,” adding that she loved that they were supporting a president who openly promises to “raise your taxes.”
Obama laid out the choice for the audience, saying that “at the end of the day, you do have to make a choice about who sees you and cares about you. I’m pretty confident the other guy doesn’t.”
At one point, Colbert said he suspected some Americans had forgotten some of the more concerning aspects of Trump’s presidency, including Jan. 6, 2021, when a mob of Trump supporters violently stormed the U.S. Capitol in a failed effort to overturn the 2020 presidential election results.
Biden said concerns over the riot reverberated outside the U.S., with foreign leaders questioning the stability of the U.S. democracy. That democracy is still fragile, he said.
The fundraiser had different tiers of access depending on a donor’s generosity. Other participating celebrities included Queen Latifah, Ben Platt, Cynthia Erivo and Lea Michele. Tickets sold for as low as $225.
More money got donors more intimate time with the presidents. A photo with all three was $100,000. A donation of $250,000 earned donors access to one reception, and $500,000 got them into an even more exclusive gathering. First lady Jill Biden and DJ D-Nice hosted an afterparty at the music hall with 500 guests, the campaign said.
Obama and Clinton were helping Biden expand his already significant cash advantage over Trump. Biden had $155 million in cash on hand through the end of February, compared with $37 million for Trump and his Save America political action committee.
AP AUDIO: Biden fundraiser with Obama and Clinton nets a record high $25 million, the campaign says.
AP Washington correspondent Sagar Meghani reports a glitzy Biden campaign fundraiser tonight in New York is set to smash a record.
The more than $26 million tally for the New York City event includes money from supporters who handed over cash in the weeks before the fundraiser for a chance to attend. It raised $6 million more than Trump raised during February.
“This historic raise is a show of strong enthusiasm for President Biden and Vice President Harris and a testament to the unprecedented fundraising machine we’ve built,” said campaign co-chair Jeffrey Katzenberg. “Unlike our opponent, every dollar we’re raising is going to reach the voters who will decide this election — communicating the president’s historic record, his vision for the future and laying plain the stakes of this election.”
Trump’s campaign is expecting to bring in $33 million at a big fundraiser next week in Palm Beach, Florida, according to a person familiar with the details who spoke on condition of anonymity to confirm a number first reported by the Financial Times.
Trump has kept a low profile in recent weeks, partially because of courtroom appearances for various legal cases , the bills for which he’s paying with funds from donors. His next political rallies are scheduled for Tuesday in Michigan and Wisconsin. Some Republican leaders have become concerned that his campaign doesn’t have the infrastructure ready for a general election battle with Biden.
Trump was in the New York area on Thursday, attending the Long Island wake of a New York City police officer who was shot and killed during a traffic stop in Queens.
Republican Party Chairman Michael Whatley tried to framed the two candidates’ whereabouts on Thursday as a demonstration of a “contrast in leadership.”
“On the same day President Trump attended the wake of slain New York Police Department officer Jonathan Diller, Joe Biden wines and dines with celebrities at a fundraiser with Barack Obama and Bill Clinton,” he said in a statement.
The facts, said White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre, show that violent crime rose during Trump’s tenure while Biden’s administration has “done the polar opposite, taking decisive action from the very beginning to fund the police and achieving a historic reduction in crime.”
The setting was an unusual opportunity for the two past presidents to talk frankly about how they did the job, helping explain Biden and his presidency.
As the three men closed out the night by donning Biden’s trademark sunglasses, the president quipped, “Dark Brandon is real,” a nod to a meme featuring Biden with lasers for eyes.
Megerian reported from Washington. Associated Press writers Jill Colvin in New York and Darlene Superville in Kissimmee, Fla., contributed to this report.

Jeff Bezos Continues Miami Real Estate Spree With $90 Million Purchase—His Third “Billionaire Bunker” Island Property
By Katie Schultz
As it turns out, Jeff Bezos wasn’t quite done buying properties on Miami’s Indian Creek Island , a.k.a. “Billionaire Bunker.” The Amazon founder just quietly spent a reported $90 million to add a third property on the ultra-exclusive, man-made isle to his extensive real estate portfolio , according to Bloomberg .
In August 2023, Bezos dropped $68 million on his first Indian Creek parcel , a nearly three-acre property with a 9,259-square-foot concrete house. Just two months later, he bought the neighboring $79 million Mediterranean-style mansion. With his most recent acquisition, which was done off-market, the Blue Origin founder owns an estimated total of $177 million in property on the Biscayne Bay island.
Per listing records, the current structure was built in 2002. According to the New York Post , Bezos plans to stay in his newest home while razing the two neighboring dwellings. The 300-acre island only hosts 41 residential properties (one of which is owned by Tom Brady , another by Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner ), so it’s a rather bold move on the billionaire’s part to snatch up the trio of properties and demolish two of them. “Property on the island is already scarce, so there is no doubt that Bezos making off-market deals will rile up a few who have been eyeing homes there,” an anonymous source told the outlet.
In November, Bezos announced that he was relocating from Seattle to Miami. “My parents have always been my biggest supporters. They recently moved back to Miami, the place we lived when I was younger,” he wrote on Instagram . “I want to be close to my parents, and [fiancée] Lauren [Sanchez] and I love Miami. Also, Blue Origin’s operations are increasingly shifting to Cape Canaveral.”
Bezos’s latest pad is a six-bedroom, nine-bathroom home spanning over 12,000 square feet. The 1.8-acre property last publicly changed hands in 1998 for $2.5 million. Aerial photos from Google Earth reveal a sprawling lawn encased by hedges, a swimming pool with an adjacent ADU, and the colossal main residence, which sports red roof tiles and spacious backyard-facing balconies.

Monday’s iHeartRadio Music Awards Were Pure Celebrity Chaos
By Emma Specter
If you pegged the annual Grammy Awards as your only chance to see Beyoncé , Cher, SZA, and other musical phenoms in the same room, you’d be wrong. At the 2024 iHeartRadio awards on Monday, those legends could all be found at Los Angeles’s Dolby Theatre, gamely posing for pictures with a host of other stars. (Meryl Streep also graced the proceedings with her presence to present Cher with the Icon Award—and take a photo with Ludacris, for some reason.)
The vibe of the night appeared to be “glorious celebrity chaos,” with everyone from Streep to Katy Perry to Avril Lavigne to Stevie Wonder hanging out and taking selfies. Take a peek at the very best photos from the iHeartRadio awards, below.
