Travellers would be delighted to visit the imposing ancient shrines located in the city. Parthasarathy temple is one of the precious charms of Chennai dedicated to Lord Parathasarthy, a manifestation of Lord Vishnu.
This enchanting religious site is one of the 108 Divyadesams. Divyadesams are the sacred shrines dedicated to Lord Vishnu which has been mentioned in the Divya Prabandha, the rich literature works by Tamil saints or the Alvars. Divya Prabandha comprises of 4000 Tamil verses composed by the 12 Alvars and compiled by Vasihnava Acharya Nathamuni.
Owing to its religious significance Parthasarathy Temple receives several pilgrims and visitors every year. Parathasarthy in Tamil means the Charioteer of Arjuna. A glorious shrine of Lord Vishnu situated in Thiruvallikeni or Triplicane is one of the oldest and most important shrines of the city.
The presiding deity appears with a moustache and doesn’t hold any weapon. He is generally seen with his discuss in all his temples. Parathasarathy in Mahabharata did not carry any weapon and holds a conch used to declare the war.
History of Parthasarathy Temple Triplicane Chennai
An exceptional significance lies in the fact that the temple houses Lord Vishnu in the form of Parathasarthy. The word Partha in Sanskrit means Arjuna and the word Sarathy means Charioteer. Lord Krishna was the charioteer of Arjuna in Kurukshetra war of Mahabharata.
The structure dates back to the 8th century when it was built by the Pallavas and resurrected by the Vijayanagara Kings in the 11th century. Revered art lover King Narasimhavarman I, also known as Mahamalla of Pallava dynasty, is believed to have laid the foundation of the temple.
Temple is located in the region called Alikeni which means pond of lily as it is said that the region had several Lily ponds and was once a Tulsi forest. Legends state that the King named Sumati went to Tirupathi seeking the appearance of Lord Vishnu as Parathasarthy who then directed him to this sacred temple.
Maintained by the Hindu Religious and Endowment Board of Government of Tamil Nadu the temple pulls a huge crowd during Vaikunta Ekadashi when 4000 poems are recited praising the deity.

Visitors would be fascinated by the grandeur of the sacred shrine built in Dravidian style of architecture. Lord Ranganatha and Lord Sri Rama are in the front mandapam. Lord Ganjendravaradha and Yoga Narashima appear in the shrines in the prakara. Sri Ranganatha can be seen resting on the Adi Sesha.
Parthasarathy Temple is a splendid spectacle featuring striking shrines of Lord Narasimha, Sri Yog Narasimhar, Lord Gajendra Varadar, Lord Chakravarthy Thirumagan, Lord Ranganatha, Goddess Vedavalli and Goddess Andal. It also enshrines Hanuman, Swami Manavala Mamunigal and Vedanthachariar.
There is a sacred tank near the temple comprising of five holy wells and it is said that the water is more pious than the water of river Ganges. Presiding deity Lord Parathasarthy showcases several injuries on its face that was caused by the arrows of Bhishma in the battle of Mahabharata.
The incredible complex houses the four forms of Lord Vishnu as Narasimha, Rama, Gajendra Vardaraja, Ranganatha and Krishna. Vividly coloured Rajagopurams and intricately carved pillars attract the attention of the visitors.
Mandapams portrays mythological stories through intricate carvings including the avatars of Lord Vishnu. Impressive additions were made during the Vijayanagar Empire like the Tiruvaimozhi Mandapam.
Sacred tank of the temple is called Kairavani surrounded by five holy Theerthams namely the Indra, Soma, Agni, Meena and Vishnu. Krishna is present in the shrine along with his consort Rukmani, brother Balaram, son Pradyumna, grandsons Anirudhha and Satyaki.
A thousand year old complex has a 36 pillared mandapam and Thiruvoimozhi Prabandha mandapam and Maha Mandapam, reflecting the art of pre-pallava period.
How to Reach Parthasarathy Temple Triplicane Chennai
Flights to Chennai are operated regularly from different parts of the country and the world. International flights take off from the Kamaraj Terminal and domestic flights flies from the Anna Terminal.
Trains to prominent cities of India run daily from Chennai Central station and trains connecting Chennai with cities of the state can be boarded from Chennai Egmore station.
The city has impressive bus transport that helps travellers reach Chennai from other cities. Buses can be boarded from Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminal that has both private and government bus operators.
Local buses and electric trains are the most economic way to commute within the capital city. Travellers can take a cab, taxi, local bus, or auto rickshaw to reach Parathasarthy Temple from the railway station, bus station or airport. Parathasarthy temple is located in Triplicane and the nearest bus stands are Triplicane and Vivekanandar Illam.

Floral festival is held from mid February till mid March. Brahmotsavams, Sri Varadaraja Uthsavam, Sri Nammalvar Uthsavam, Vasanthosavam, Kodai Uthsavam, Krishna Jayanti, Navarathri, Diwali, Karthigai dipam, Rama Navmi and Udayavar Uthsavam are well celebrated.
Pilgrims throng in to celebrate Vaikunta Ekadesi held during the month of December to January. Presiding deity is taken for an amazing procession in his vahanams like Yali, Hamsa, and Garuda. Annadhanam is held every day. Moral classes are held for children every Sunday.

Parthasarathy Temple is open daily from 5:30 AM till 12:00 noon and 4:00 PM in the evening to 9:00 PM at night.
There is no entry fee to visit the temple.

To mark the celebration of Madras Day, Tamilnadu Tourism Development Corporation (TTDC) in association with Madras Inherited organized a Heritage Food walk in Tripiclicane, Chennai.
The food walk is enthusiastically curated by Madras Inherited team’s Shri Ashmitha Athreya, an Architect and heritage enthusiast. Each month, the Madras Inherited team organizes walks and events in various locations, under heritage and culture themes in and around Chennai.
We walked to some of Triplicane’s delicious and finest food outlets and sampled their mouthwatering varieties of Melting Halwas, Hot spicy Pakodas, Dive deep into Sambhar-soaked Idlis, Energizing Hot Masala Milk, and Strong Hot filter Coffee at the places where it all started many years ago, and listening to the stories, the culture behind this famous food outlets.
Tamilnadu Tourism Development Corporation (TTDC)’s managing director Shri Sandeep Nanduri, who has also joined the food walk, said through TTDC they may plan for such heritage walks once a month.
The Triplicane heritage food trail started from Amir Mahal, the official palace of Arcot Nawab, and explored some of the Triplicane’s legacy and lip-smacking food joints like Basha Halwa Wala, Ratna Cafe, Thanigaivelan Inippagam, Hema Milk Depot, and finally ended at Bharathi Mess.

Basha Halwawala – 100 Years Old Best Traditional Dum Ka Roat Halwa Sweet Shop in Triplicane, Chennai
Basha Halwa Wala, the 100 years old sweet shop in Jam Bazaar, Triplicane, Chennai, is most famous for its “Dum Ka Roat” – a halwa delicacy that is crusty on the outside and hot and soft on the inside. Basha Halwawala is one of the best places to have various varieties of tasty halwa sweets in the Chennai area.
The rates at Basha Halwa Wala are reasonable and the shop is always crowded with regular customers. This small outlet exists for decades with no other branches. This shop specialty still maintains its traditional taste and also it’s their traditional vintage way of packing them in cardboard boxes.
Basha Halwawala’s Authetic Dum Ka Roat
Basha Halwawala’s authentic Dum Ka Roat lured halwa lovers towards it and the shop is one of the landmarks of Triplicane in Chennai. Dum Ka Roat is basically a baked semolina pudding.
This hot, fresh, gooey, crispy pumpkin seed delight Halwa Dum Ka Roat was must try dessert and its texture is really super tasty and awesome.
They also mastered the art of making the carrot halwa and bottle gourd halwa. Carrot halwa was almost liquid, drenched in ghee, and purely yummy.
The 82-year-old traditional Basha Halwawala sweet shop is in the 4th generation and states that “there is no secret ingredient to the Dum Ka Roat and the trick lies entirely in the using coal dum baking of the dish, a process which takes 3-4 hours and the secret lies in the way it’s made”.
The shop is easily accessible, it is left to the popular mall “Express Avenue” and nearer to Jam Bazaar police station.

Ratna cafe is the most famous 74 years old restaurant in Triplicane was started in 1948. It is one of the best places for its authentic sambhar Idli with its official tagline as “The Magic of Sambar”. Each day around 2,000 liters of sambar are prepared and sent to their other branches in Adyar and T. Nagar.

Hema Milk Depot is a popular shop for its hot Masala Milk or Kadhai Doodh and Badam Milk. This shop is currently run by Sohanlal Solanki, a Rajasthan-based father, and sons duo for more than 50 years in Triplicane. For their shop, they use only cow’s milk.

History of Bharathi Mess
Bharathi Mess was started in 2012 – over 10 years ago jointly by Shri S. Kannan and Shri S. Saravanan and they were the ones who fell in love with and inspired by Bharathi since their early days and took a decision to name their mess/restaurant after Shri Mahakavi Subramania Bharathi.
When we entered Bharathi Mess, we are welcomed with Mundashu Bharatiyar at the door entrance.
The mess space is small but long enough to accommodate more people. It was impressive that the tables were set up in a proper columns, and there is also a fast-food style for standing and eating.

Shri Mahakavi Subramania Bharathi’s rare photographs along with small notes about his life history and poems are plastered all over the walls, and songs of poets are played continuously.
Bharathi Mess is known for its traditional rice varieties such as Mapillai samba, millets, and greens. Meals for lunch come with a serving of Mappillai samba rice and Kambu kali with a bunch of veggies. Whole wheat noodles are also offered to customers at dinner time. Their menu also consists of all healthy evening snacks at very reasonable prices. Some of them are Ragi, Kambu ladoo, vazhapoo vada, and Kozhakattai – the Jaggery and coconut-stuffed steamed rice cakes.

Bharathi Mess’s special menu is the mainstream of the restaurant. It is impossible to run a restaurant like this without a love for food. Breakfast is the popular meal of the day, Starting from Kambangali, Kelvarakukali to steamed dishes, and sprouted grains, their day starts with 35 items like idli, vada, Pongal, dosa, puri, Podi Dosa, Rava dosa, Onion puffs, and Ragi idiyappam is a popular morning tiffin as is Ulutham kanji (urad dhal kanji).

Bharathi Mess has an identity of its own, for tastes, food hygiene, and surroundings. They have a strict cooking policy of using no palm oil, no cooking soda, no white sugar, no maida, no preservatives or taste enhancer, and focus on serving millets and jaggery.

Triplicane Big Mosque (Wallajah Mosque) is a mosque located on Triplicane High Road in Chennai. It is one of the famous, largest, and oldest mosques in Chennai that attracts large number of devotees. This mosque houses the tomb of Saint Maulana Abdul Ali Bahrul Uloom, of the significant Princes of Arcot. This mosque consists of huge prayer room, a tank and a large front of the mosque. This mosque is a beautiful example of Islamic architecture known for its designs, carvings and arches. The exterior and interior of the mosque are decorated with calligraphy and ornate stone carvings, offering visitors a clear treat. Being an active place of worship, this mosque accommodates thousands of worshipers. This is the best place to visit during Bakrid and Ramzan as there are constant flow of devotees attending divine prayers seeking spiritual solace.

The mosque was built by Nawab Wallajah Muhammad Ali Khan, who ruled the Carnatic kingdom during the British colonial period in the 18th century. It has played an important role in the religion and culture of the local Muslim community for more than two centuries.

The Speciality of Triplicane Big Mosque lies in its architecture. The Mosque is the largest mosque in Chennai since its establishment. It is made of granite without the addition of metal or wood. Although there is no fixed architectural style, two minarets are characteristic of Mughal architecture.
