It was amazing! Andre gives an amazing tour, very interesting facts that I would've never known. I would definitely recommend doing the tour with him! Thanks so much!
It was a balanced and informative tour. André went through the trouble of giving us a tour in Portuguese as we are learning the language, and was careful to cater to our level of understanding. He interspersed historical facts with present-day informatio

The best Airbnbs in Portugal
By Olivia Morelli and Abigail Malbon
Bustling city streets, sprawling vineyards, whitewashed villages, vast rivers, glistening coastlines – Portugal is a land of contrasts, a medley of landscapes and terrains. Finding the right place to explore it all from is the trick; somewhere that welcomes you home but inspires you to explore. These are the best Airbnbs from which to base yourself in Portugal, from a smart Lisbon apartment to a converted farmhouse in the Douro Valley. For more, see our pick of the best Airbnbs in Lisbon .
Villa for a large group, Douro Valley
Tried and tested
A trip to the Douro Valley is high on plenty of bucket lists, and it's not hard to see why; the wine and port is delicious, of course, but the landscape, which is listed as a World Heritage Site, is something truly special. Nestled right in the middle is this villa, which used to be a family home and is now rented out by two sisters who grew up here and still care for the property lovingly. The villa has seven rooms and sleeps 14, with a large kitchen, dining area, living room and outdoor space with a pool; we stayed in late-October, when it was still warm enough to swim. It's worth flying into Porto and catching the train to the valley to see the best of the views from the windows as you steam along the railway tracks. Pick up a few bottles of local wine on your way to the villa and spend the evening watching the sun go down on the property's terrace.
Sleeps: 14 Price: £575 a night (minimum two nights)
River view apartment, Gaia, Porto
Some more Portugal Airbnbs we like the look of
While we have not stayed in every Airbnb featured, we have carefully selected these as recommendations based on their location, design, previous guest reviews and the fact that they have achieved Airbnb's Superhost status at the time of our research. All listings on Condé Nast Traveller are independently selected by our editors. If you book something through our links, we may earn an affiliate commission.
Looking out over the river towards Porto from the banks of Gaia (across the Luis bridge from the main city centre) is a stunning way to see the city. This modern luxury apartment has the feel of a hotel, with its marbled bathroom and blackout curtains, but comes with the privacy and space you can only find in an Airbnb. Features include a large private balcony, a full-size kitchen for hosting and a dedicated dining room, and guests rate the place particularly highly for cleanliness and value.
Sleeps: 4 Price: £149 a night
A chic cabin, Comporta
In the heart of Comporta , two minutes away from the beach and surrounded by warm sand is this cabin, which makes a stunning getaway for up to four people. Highlights include the outdoor seating area, which is just shaded enough to allow you to enjoy the Portuguese sunshine without scorching, and the barbecue for afternoons that turn into evenings enjoying the sea breeze. The town centre is just half a mile away, if you plan to venture to some of Comporta's restaurants, and guests particularly enjoy the feeling of being in nature here.
Sleeps: 14 Price: £79 a night (minimum two nights)
Chic loft, Aveiro
Aveiro, a town between Lisbon and Porto famed for its canals and colourful fishermen houses, is often described as ‘the Venice of Portugal’. From this chic loft you'll be perfectly placed to explore the historic centre. The mezzanine bed looks out over the canal and towards the river, and the minimal style is in perfect contrast to the bright colours of the city. All the local amenities are in walking distance, and guests love the unique design of the apartment.
Sleeps: 4 Price: £63 a night (minimum two nights)
Relaxing mountain home, Coimbra
Explore Portugal's varied landscape in this stunning home in the Serra da Estrela mountains, mainland Portugal’s highest range. Wine lovers will be particularly keen to visit the many nearby vineyards, home to some of the country's best winemakers, but if it's a quiet stay away from it all this property, set a quarter of a mile down its own private track, will do the trick. It sleeps just two, but the owners can help you book the sister property, Casa Figo, if you're travelling as part of a larger group.
Sleeps: 2 Price: £49 a night (minimum two nights)
Beachside retreat, Comporta
Comporta, a beachside destination near to Lisbon, is loved by chic locals and those looking for a relaxing weekend by the sea. This minimalist home, with a private pool, is located behind a pine forest for ultimate seclusion. The beach is five minute's drive away, and local restaurants nearby, but you'll need to think ahead if you're interested; the property books up months in advance thanks to its simplistic design and ideal location.
Sleeps: 6 Price: £33 a night (minimum three nights)
Seaside retreat, Lisbon
Set inside a vast villa, this charming house has everything you need for a soothing retreat between towering mountains and sprawling sea. Interiors are laidback and minimal, using lots of neutral shades, lamp lighting and light wooden details. The bathrooms are sleek with grey marble walls, double sinks and tiling, while the kitchen has modern appliances and an open-plan dining-room layout. But the real selling point is the location – step outside to discover a pristine pool looking out to the ocean with plenty of sunbeds to go around plus a manicured garden, barbecue and views of the Sintra Mountains. The space is also available for exclusive rental – just get in touch with the host for information on rates.
Sleeps: 4 Price: from £86 a night (minimum two to five nights)
Terracotta urban studio, Porto
From the street, this stone house looks like most of the other buildings lining the streets of Porto . But behind the navy-blue door lie five studio apartments sharing a tranquil outdoor deck, with high terracotta-painted walls hiding a square-shaped pool from neighbours, with comfortable sunbeds and an olive tree. Each studio comes with a double bed, bathroom (with walk-in shower), dining and work area and fully equipped kitchen, and guests share a living-room space creaking with antiques, from well-worn leather sofas and vintage clocks to piles of books and vintage luggage used as tables.

Converted farmhouse, Douro Valley
This loft farmhouse sits in the heart of the Douro Valley , a country escape deep in the hills of the UNESCO world heritage site . On the ground floor, there's an open-plan living area with worn, rustic cabinets housing piles of well-thumbed books and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the valley. The olive-green-timber exterior distinctly divides the lower floor and loft from the outside, but inside there's a unified aesthetic of whitewashed walls hung with quirky artwork and brightly patterned rugs on wooden floors. Wake up for breakfast with a view before spending the day lazing by the pool . The hosts offer several extra services – ask to arrange a boat trip along the Douro River, book a massage with a local therapist, or order farm room service for homemade lunch or dinner delivered to the house.
Sleeps: 14 Price: £345 a night (minimum two nights) Website: airbnb.co.uk
Historic roundhouse, Setúbal
Sometimes a holiday villa just won’t do the trick. If you’re looking for something a bit more out of the ordinary, book into this renovated windmill in the outskirts of Setúbal. Explore the small towns of Casal das Figueiras, Grelhal and Troino or hike around Arrábida natural park, before returning to your remote windmill hideout. Enter through giant double gates to access the property, in which eclectic decor reveals a mishmash of architectural influences. Stone staircases wind around the different floors, with vintage lamps and wooden beams converging with floral-patterned armchairs, multicoloured rugs and curtains, and structural remnants of the original building – the bed is set underneath a giant wooden mill wheel, and shelves have been worked into ancient pillars to hold books, lamps and other antique paraphernalia. Dine on the top-floor terrace , with views across the sea.
Sleeps : 3 Price: £108 a night
Peaceful townhouse, Lagos
This property emanates tranquillity from all corners with a cream-toned interior that blends light wooden furnishings, linen fabrics, rattan fixtures and hanging plants. The rustic kitchen has a homely feel, with a traditional Portuguese-tiled splashback, blue-and-white painted china and fully stocked shelves hidden behind chequered curtains, while bedrooms carpeted with thick, soft rugs have coffee-coloured bedding and are adorned with dreamlike bird sculptures. But the best part of this peaceful escape is the patio. The door from the kitchen opens up to a hidden suntrap with striped sun loungers, tiled flagstone floors, wooden tables for alfresco dining, an outdoor rain shower and a private pool for cooling down after a day spent exploring the city.
Sleeps: four Price: £280 a night (minimum two nights)
Palatial villa, Vale Formoso, near Faro
There are plenty of holiday homes to rent in the area, but this mansion in the former civil parish town of Vale Formoso, on the outskirts of the Natural Park and mountain range of Serra da Estrela, is our favourite – a cream-coloured villa with a terracotta-tiled roof, rugged interiors and multiple outdoor areas. In the living room, a giant brick fireplace takes centre stage, surrounded by stone walls, roughly hewn wooden tables and vintage Portuguese ornaments. The kitchen is more modern, with marble flooring, pendant lights and a sleek dining area, while a marble staircase with a glass balcony leads to the bedrooms upstairs, all draped in cosy fabrics in soft hues, with traditional tiled bathrooms and views of the sea. Outside there are plenty of shady corners with tables and chairs for alfresco meals or evening drinks, plus a ginormous pool surrounded by thick greenery, gnarled olive trees and lots of sunbeds.
Sleeps: 10 Price: £959 a night (minimum seven nights)
Riverview windmill, Almada
The perfect spot for those looking for a countryside escape within easy reach of the city. Just across from Lisbon on the banks of the Tagus, this historic windmill has been converted into a unique getaway. The dome-roofed structure has a cosy, wrapped-up feel, with a snug living area on the top floor and a window looking out over the river and towards the capital. Downstairs, rustic wooden ceilings and stone skirting blend with minimal design and pared-back tones. If you can’t get enough of the view, head outside to discover a treehouse hidden amid branches and leaves, great for a sunset supper or lazy breakfast soaking up the surroundings. During the summer months, request a small swimming pool, explore the beaches, feast on pastéis de nata or go for a cycle through the city.
Sleeps: four Price: from £77 a night
Rooftop terrace apartment, Lisbon
This colourful apartment is the ultimate city-break base. The monochrome interiors, decorated in a range of greens from darker olive tones in the bedroom to mint in the living area, are offset by a large grey sofa, black-and-white rug and plenty of artwork on the walls. The surprising exception to the rule is the second bedroom – a burst of crimson inspired by the deep colours of Portuguese red wines. Loll in the open-plan living space or kick back on the terrace, taking in views across Lisbon’s rooftops and aqueduct. Plus, it’s close to Rato station and the Tram 24 stop, perfectly placed to explore the city.
Here are Portugal best beaches:
Sleeps: four Price: from £73 a night (minimum three nights)
Remote riad, Budens, near Faro
A Moroccan-style riad rising up between typical Portuguese houses, this grand Airbnb is an excellent option for an alternative stay outside Faro . Rough wooden beams and red-brick archways contrast with crisp white walls and delicately carved furniture in the living areas, while splashes of bright colours and carefully designed mosaic tiling in the bathroom and bedrooms show Portuguese influences. Spend days exploring the small beach town of Budens before returning to the villa for an afternoon relaxing by the jagged-edged polygon pool, reading and sipping on coffee on the outdoor wicker chairs or taking a snooze in the lemon-coloured bedroom.
Sleeps: four Price: £133 a night
Retro campervan, Leiria
Looking for the airiness of an apartment with a more remote and relaxed vibe? This retro campervan is the best of both worlds. Inside a renovated double-decker bus lie two floors with a fully equipped kitchen and dining area, bathroom, double bedroom and upstairs living room that can be made up into another bedroom. Opening out onto a deck, the bus comes with a private pool, barbecue and shaded seating, plus a hammock and sunbeds on which you can while away the hours. Get into the Portuguese hippie spirit in this secluded spot or head to the nearby beaches about a 40-minute drive away.

The best Airbnbs in Portugal for 2023
Here is my curated list of the very best Airbnbs in Portugal to rent this year, each chosen for its stylish design, excellent location, and positive reviews from past guests.

1. Stunning Loft Abode in Lisbon
- Location: Madragoa, Lisbon
- Sleeps: 4 guests
- Rating: 4.8/5 (Airbnb Plus; Superhost)
This bohemian apartment combines contemporary design with traditional Portuguese flourishes to give guests a quintessential Lisbon city experience . In a previous life, the space was a public tavern (oh, if those polished cement floors could talk!).
You can find plenty of clues to the building’s 19th century neo-Gothic glamour in the owner’s thoughtful design touches, particularly the reclaimed furniture.
Industrial-inspired finishes, generous bay windows and a loft sleeping space make this apartment unforgettable. A full kitchen and modern bathroom complete the floor plan.
→ See more of my favourite Lisbon Airbnbs .
2. Best Faro Airbnb: Villa With Garden Near Vilamoura Marina
- Location: Villamoura, Faro (The Algarve)
- Sleeps: 8 guests
- Rating: 5/5 (Airbnb Plus)
With four bedrooms and bathrooms, this typical villa in Faro is what Algarve dreams are made of. The sophistication of the house’s contemporary profile, finished in rust-coloured paint and framed by leafy gardens, is mirrored in the interior design, which features textural stone detailing and huge pane glass windows that open out to an enclosed patio.
A generous kitchen and fenced-off outdoor pool makes this place suitable for families with young children.
3. Best Airbnb Cascais: House With a Pool & Mountain View
- Location: Malveira da Serra, Cascais
- Rating: 4.9/5 (Airbnb Plus; Superhost)
This stunning family home in the green hills above Cascais is a dreamy retreat from Lisbon. The location catches a cool breeze year-round, and both the beach and hiking trails are located nearby. Free parking is also available on site.
Wake up every morning to the tune of blackbirds signing, and every evening, watch the sunset over the Serra de Sintra from the infinity pool.
Inside, two separate bedrooms and an open-plan kitchen/living/dining are finished in light colours, raw wood and natural fibres, adding a touch of coastal charm. The distinctive wall mural in the living room is a highlight.
4. Haus Am Meer in Budens
- Location: Salema (The Algarve)
This designer cottage by the sea in Salema on the Algarve is one of the most beautiful Portugal Airbnbs you’ll find. A former fisherman’s house, it features a distinctive inner courtyard and private garden.
Moorish-style architectural elements in the arches and sitting nooks are an utter delight, while a small decorative pool (not for swimming, but perfect for dipping your toes in!) inspires pure tranquility.
Inside, twin bedrooms and a compact living space mirror the same design, with arched brick doorways, exposed ceiling rafters, and ornate bathroom tiles. The location, footsteps from one of the Algarve’s best beaches, is made for summer holidays.
5. Villa in Dunas Douradas
- Location: Dunas Douradas (Central Algarve)
- Sleeps: 5 guests
- Rating: 5/5 (Airbnb Plus; Superhost)
This palatial villa is bathed in sunlight all day long. Generous windows let the light pour into two bedrooms and a family sized kitchen as well, while a fireplace transforms the living area into a cosy retreat on cool nights.
The private pool patio is the real highlight of this villa on the Central Algarve. Because the plot backs straight onto a pine tree forest, it feels completely private and tranquil.
The house is walking distance from the nearest beach and from Ria Formosa Nature Reserve, where you can find a flock of resident flamingos.
6. Best Airbnb Tavira: Casa Alecrim
- Location: Tavira (East Algarve)
- Sleeps: 6 guests
- Rating: 4.9/5 (Airbnb Plus)
You’ll feel instantly at home in this spacious three-bedroom house set back from the river in charming Tavira. Twin open-air terraces fringed by flowering trees are the perfect place to enjoy a drink or home-cooked meal.
The home is ideal for longer stays, featuring a generous kitchen, full laundry and three separate bedrooms.
7. Quiet & Stylish Place in Sintra
- Location: Sintra
- Sleeps: 3 guests
This stylish home in Sintra is just 20 minutes from Lisbon and right at the entrance to the Natural Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Mid-century furniture gives this elegant hideaway character and appeal. A single bedroom with ensuite and a compact kitchenette make the space perfect for couples. The open-air terrace at the rear of the property is a nice touch – but it’s the front entryway, with its traditional lamp post lights and tiled sign, that will have you swooning.
8. Remodelled Loft in Porto Airbnb
- Location: Porto Old Town (near Aliados Metro)
This gorgeous loft in the heart of Porto is conveniently located on the periphery of the historic Old Town, footsteps from some of the city’s biggest attractions and must-see landmarks. The front entry, which opens off a gorgeous cobblestone street, is 100% Portugal and will have you feeling like a local.
Inside, the space is clean and modern, with a soothing palette of white and natural wood, high ceilings, and sparse, thoughtful furnishings. The galley style, marble-lined kitchen leads to a private patio where you can catch some morning sun.
The space has two bedrooms, one nestled on a cosy mezzanine.
9. Design Loft in Fisherman’s House in Alcochete
- Location: Alochete village (30 minutes from Lisbon)
- Sleeps: 2 guests
This boutique loft space for two is located on the Tagus River just opposite downtown Lisbon. Close to all the main sights and yet a world away, you can drift off to sleep with the sound of waves crashing on the seawall just beyond the front door.
Set on a charming cobbled street, the white-and-yellow house – part of a row of traditional cottages – is steeped in history. Vintage accoutrements bring old-world character to the otherwise modern, whitewashed and bright open-plan living area.
The loft bedroom features a skylight to let yet more of that precious sunlight and fresh sea air in.
10. Retro Bus in Arrabal
- Location: Arrabal village (near Leiria)
This renovated double-decker camper van is no longer a rolling stone, but has found a permanent home in the picturesque mountain village of Arrabal. A completely unique Airbnb in Portugal, the bus has been lovingly transformed into a cosy space parked in the backyard of a family home.
The bus is small, but it doesn’t compromise on features or creature comforts. A full kitchen and modern bathroom sit on the bottom level, while upstairs you’ll find a separate bedroom and living area.
If you need to stretch your legs, there’s a private patio with a hammock – and guests also have access to the property’s outdoor pool.
11. Converted Windmill in Setubal
- Location: Setubal (40 minutes from Lisbon)
For a truly unique stay in Portugal, consider this historic windmill on the edge of a national park near Lisbon. The Moinho do Marco was built in 1855 and retains many of its original features, including the gorgeous wooden gears you see in the bedroom.
The rest of the interior, including a full bathroom and small kitchenette, is comfortably furnished. The unusual curved walls and stone detailing mean you never forget you’re inside a piece of living history.
Located close to the Serra da Arrábida and the Sado Estuary, this place is a retreat from the hubbub of the capital while still only being a short drive from downtown. You can even see the water from the outdoor terrace and shared swimming pool.
12. Glamping Tent in Aldeia do Rouquenho, one of the best nature-inspired Airbnbs in Portugal
- Location: Ferreira do Alentejo
- Rating: 4.9/5 (Superhost)
This glamping tent offers a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the landscapes of central Alentejo, one of the most beautiful parts of Portugal . Choupana ChicoZé, as the property is known, is located on a family estate in the countryside overlooking a valley lined with silver oak trees.
Glamping in Portugal might be a new concept, but the design of the tent and adjoining terrace spaces is actually inspired by traditional shepherd’s huts.
Made from eco-friendly wood and local cork, the 15m2 space is big enough for a double bed, kitchenette and sofa. One of the walls opens up completely to let sunlight and fresh air in.
Guests also have access to a swimming pool and covered cabana.
13. Sunny Penthouse in Praia da Luz
- Location: Praia da Luz (near Lagos)
This penthouse at Praia da Luz is just a four-minute walk from the beach. Sea views reveal themselves behind billowing sheer curtains, allowing you to gaze out at the rolling waves any time of day.
The space features an open and airy living area with hardwood floors, a family sized kitchen, and two spacious bedrooms. Each of the three Juliette balconies offers a slightly different aspect over Praia da Luz’s delightful red rooftops.

14. Airbnb Funchal With a Terrace
- Location: Funchal, Madeira
There’s really only two ways to bask in the beauty of Portugal’s Madeira archipelago – the first is by hiking the islands , and the second is by perching yourself on a sun-soaked rooftop terrace overlooking the mountains and sea.
This breezy penthouse in Funchal is every bit as gorgeous inside too, with all-white twin bedrooms and a mint-green kitchen. The location two minutes from the bustling Old Town is ideal for eating out and sightseeing.

Unique things to do in Lisbon
Book unforgettable activities hosted by locals on Airbnb.
Travel like a local
Spanning seven hills, Lisbon has been compared to cities like San Francisco with its eclectic art scene, innovative dining options, and buzzing nightlife. However the minute you hear fado being sung quietly on the side streets of Alfama, you realize Lisbon is its own distinct place. Take discovery into your own hands on a pasteis de nata (pastry-making) class, bike tours to Belem Tower, sailing activities, and more things to do in Lisbon on Airbnb Experiences.

What do locals do in lisbon.
Lisbon has a long maritime history, dating back to 1497 when Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama successfully sailed to India and back in one year. Today, locals love taking their sailboats out on the Tagus River, and many of them offer boat tours and sailing excursions.
Relax over fado music
Fado is a musical tradition that is still very alive on a walk along city streets. Revelers dip into small clubs and bars, or sometimes stop on the street, to enjoy this emotive music that is best characterized by powerful vocals often accompanied by a string quartet. Join local hosts (sometimes fado singers themselves) who can show you the very best of the genre on pub crawls and in venues such as Coliseu Lisbon.
Enjoy wine tastings
Portugal is known for its viticulture, especially Douro Valley, some 240 miles from Lisbon. Closer to home, locals enjoy a day of wine tastings in the Arrábida region, where beaches, a national park, and villages offer a relaxing escape from city life. Skip the hassle of driving and book a private or small-group tour to enjoy this region with a local expert.
What do locals eat and drink in Lisbon?
Portuguese gastronomy is as delicious as its history is rich. When in Lisbon, the diverse menu goes beyond Portuguese with Italian, Japanese, and other global fare, but no visit is complete until you’ve encountered what this country invented (and/or perfected) over the centuries.
Tinned Fish
Ask any Michelin-rated chef, or food connoisseur, and you know that tinned fish is having a moment in the culinary world. But that’s nothing the Portuguese haven’t known for centuries. What was once fast food is now an art form — decorative tins packed with everything from anchovies to caviar are in high demand in places such as the Time Out Market Lisboa.
Portuguese cod is a treasured dish, one that even has its own saying: “There are more than 365 ways to cook bacalhau, one for every day of the year.” Experience the customs and history of this dish, among others, on food tours that focus on the local community and sustainable practices.
Pasteis de nata
Picture this: a group of 17th-century monks making egg custards. The result? The quintessential Portuguese pastry known as pasteis de nata, invented in Lisbon’s Belém District. Try your hand at making this delectable treat in baking classes with local chefs.
Ginjinha (Ginja)
Portugal is best known as the birthplace of port wine, but Lisbon has celebrated this as its own special drink for centuries. Stop at one of many small ginjinha bars around the city to taste this cherry liqueur.
This is the Portuguese answer to tapas, where plates overflow with cheeses, meats, olives, and fruits from local markets. Wash it all down with a crisp glass of vinho verde.
What are the best day trips from Lisbon?
Just a 30-minute drive from Lisbon, nestled in the foothills of the Sintra Mountains, lies a town that looks like it came straight from a storybook. Leafy streets shade cafe tables and quaint shops on your way to the colorful Palácio da Pena (Pena Palace). Here you can explore on your own, or with guided tours, to see where Portuguese kings and queens called home for hundreds of years.
Situated in the Algarve region, and about 2.5 hours south of Lisbon by car, Lagos is an ultimate beach getaway where you can kayak, go paragliding, and take relaxing boat cruises where you might even see dolphins. In the old town, enjoy historic architecture, wine tastings, and small bites.
